Rinor Pireva COMPONENT 2
Introduction • I want to start this project completely fresh and new. I will firstly need to look and seek of different types of designs, methods of working and themes to go along with it. I will do this process before the brief and specification because I feel learning these new methods will be much more beneficial in the first place because one I find out what I want to create I am able o get straight to the point, knowing new methods that I have created and also themes. In addition to this, allowing myself no base of what I want to create allows me to be free and without restrictions, almost like I have total freedom with no limitations to what I come up with first, making it completely unique.
Starting a new project I also wanted to explore new ways of creating ideas before I settled down on themes and ideas along with specifications and briefs that a client would like. Therefore I decided to use this method where I use random cut-offs off other projects and use nails and screws to attach. Doing so allowed me to take some green string and wrap it round, almost like I was changing this model up to be a building or a structure of some sort. Doing this process allowed me to create such a shape as they where random cut offs with endless possibilities. In addition, the string allowed this type of contrast to stand out almost like it is in sections. I like this rustic effect however and the wood work as I feel we are able to use it in many different ways and will probably try the same process again.
Carrying on with the same process I decided to less the string out and use much more wood, allowing for the strung to become more of a structural purpose. Doing so I was able to create something with no limits and it has either formed the start of a building/ pavilion or a structure. This method really shows what possibilities I am able to do with it and I am able to manipulate how I structure each piece and the photos to give it a certain purpose. Finally the use of this wood can be actually very natural themed but still bring out this really rustic effect from where some of the layers of plywood have been ripped off and left this really jagged edge to it, which is something like this theme I will want to look into, epically with this way of modelling.
Previously using this method I created something really blocky to show the methods of thinking and the different outcomes with just manipulating the shape and the camera angle. This time I wanted to create something with the actual wooden base as support and use the strings as the function and the main focal point, such as of one from a suspension bridge. The triangle base is extremely strong and this abstract construction was done in way that there are multiple ways of entering, in a way it is almost like a pavilion type were shopping centres can strive. To add to effect I added some metal spirals to the corners in a way that they look like pillars. I really liked this method as I feel like it is really blocky and raw, which from this I can take it from its bare materials and build it up, which I feel will be my next step. So far I have come up with themes of structural, natural and also rustic with functions such as a pavilion, however I will have to see where the further ideas will take me with this method.
Taking it one step further I have decided to take the same method of creating the models, however I spaced the parts and also add more on to give it more themes to look at. Also it gives us a different way of thinking and how we actually look at the final outcome. So far I have taken other random plywood cut outs and applied them in difficult m ways to make it look like a maze, or a illusion and no possible way of creating it like a building with a function. This gives the building a new sense of direction by giving it this mysterious feel to it.
As seen from the pervious models I created the next step was to look at how the building had changed once I put in the sting wrapping round. The string really helps the building as it first looks like a really rough and rustic bit of plywood with the jagged sheets ripped off however it becomes much more elegant and flow like once the sting is in place. Often overlapping gives this sense of levels almost. So far then we have the themes of rough and rustic, however we have merged together the two with flow and elegance.
To get to feel with a real life scale and proper finish, I decided to take the design and apply it to CAD. The reason for this is because now I am able to look at the measurements and as a result also look at the model from multiple angles which is much more useful. In addition it gives it a more realistic view to it, even without rendering the images. I really like this design as it is very structural however to follow with themes of freedom and limitations the shapes are still cut-outs, and as a result I had to play in the shapes, only the rearrangements, giving it that theme. Even though it is really structural it still has a lot of natural and organic themes such as the building being made out of wood and also a number of trees. However to give it that really striking contrast I have places it in a busy London background, and as a result it really lightens the mood and gives it that sense of warmth, instead of London's very structural and simple designs.
This might be one of the more important steps to finally take this model and adapt in in such a way that it will look completely different. Allow thing the rustic wood and the flow of the strings to be the structural bases for the plaster to where is droops down and flows like a river, still being able to see the jagged edges of the ply woof and the strings like they have been covered in snow. I really like this effect as it fills in the gaps much better and you will actually be able to make a design from this. In addition I have tried to capture the same camera angles as before to show the transformation, as well as adding in trees and other organic and natural objects to really give it that sense of a building to be able to give it a function. I feel that if we hollowed out the interior it would be a really good house, or even some sort of community space. Making it really modern with normal themes such as rustic, structure, flow and elegance gives it the contrast itself and maybe experiment with it further.
I decided to almost take a step backwards in a way to maybe relive some of the processes or even create new ones by actually first pouring way of the model. This was a critical step as held down together the plaster when I was breaking it. The aim of this was because I really wanted to explore more of the rustic and rough effect as I feel I gives off this really cool look that most buildings do not have anymore. I like to think of this broken piece theme really interesting as it is like curves on a building as it is different every time you look at it and thus really interesting. In addition you have some of the plaster actually hanging off with the string attended and in a way you are exposed to the structural inside the building, and I really like this idea and theme of being really open and letting people explore more about the building, such as the inside of the material, blending well with them theme of rustic and rough with the plywood.
Expanding my knowledge I decided it will also be a good idea to take the contrast of rough as rustic and use the plaster itself as a completely different form to create something smooth and curvy. I took a nylon sheet and then give it some corners, filling it with minimal amount of plaster later so that it creates almost a shell type of effect and as a result I have created a smooth like structure that can be given a function with this hollow interior. I really like this concept as it is really easy to make and you get a positive of what you have created onto the nylon sheet, however you will not know how it will turn out until the very end, giving this surprise feel to it. In addition using this method I was able to still use corners and edges, to almost make it look like the already existing building, The O2. it looks like to think of it a very strong structural inside with a very strong and durance smooth sheet covering it, as a result mixing the flow and structural elegance together. I really like this new concept and I feel like I will try it out a few more times.
Like I said I decided to carry on with the plaster forming itself. I decided instead of creating a new plaster mould itself I used the previous model itself and broke it in many different pieces. Form this I took the pieces and formed in a way such that it could of given a function. Doing so allowed to create angles that where not purposely made and where completely random and the flow, smooth like plaster finishes and you are able to see the rough and bubbly like structure of the plaster when broken. I really like this idea as it is random and not predicted at all to where the plaster decided itself with its own force. Something I will defiantly want to carry on looking at with this unpredictably and also themes of rustic rough and elegance.
City surrounding the main area. Can be a community area of some sort
As you can see we used to plaster to create the positive of what we actually created. This time I decided to include another material so that we can actually create the negative of a model. The reason for this is that you can never really understand the concept of something being the negative since that is not the way we think, however we can imagine how it could come out as. For this model I too about 2 inches of drain pipe and filled it with standard soft clay. Doing so I was able to press a number of different shapes and textures so that once we are finished we are able to pour in out normal plaster and let it set. Once we do that we are able to take out the clay ad we are left with the negative and much harder to predict. I really like this method as the textures come out really well and so do all the cracks and crevasses and it something I will probably look into more. In addition since we get a flat surface on the bottom it almost looks like something you would find in a snow globe, to make some type of alien city. From this however before I planted the plaster I was able to use some artificial grass and to stick down to the plaster like it was some type of moss like effect. I really like this method and also themes as it has its sense of flow but it is really structural and clever way of creating. Lastly I took the models and I broke them down to little pieces. This way it created almost a new texture, a very structural one, however it still had some of the rustic and also elegant effect to it. It was I was also able to see much more of the texture within the plaster.
To start things off to get some knowledge about the theme of freedom and limitations I wanted to use sub themes to help me out. For this first sub theme I wanted to see what it would be like to have some type of rustic and old look. I found some images and they varied however I feel like the scenes tend to be a bit dark and its something I don’t really want to have in my design. However I have leant some type of flow and structural theme from this.
This second theme I looked at was a type of natural/ organic but also extremely flow like. I think it is a really good idea as you have this really relaxing vibe to it and its also the experience to be unique to the customers. I will defiantly look into this and use this multicolour or monogram effect to create a contrast. The idea of having this type of design as it is really relaxing and something new. This is also linking well with natural and organic elements that I like.
Structure I feel is one of the most important themes to have, not only for making the building possible but also it has some really interesting angles to it, almost like it is a illusion and patterns. It is so diverse that you are even able to take structural lines like geometry and turn it to something that flows. In addition to this the images directly to the left shows a rock which has been eroded, a clear sign that structure effects organic objects. Loads of these shapes correlate with brutalist architecture however I want to change that idea and transform it to something much more elegant.
After talking about my themes I wanted to explore buildings which correlated well with the themes such as structure and flow. These are some building, externally and internally. This has really gave me some inspiration to what it is I want to design and also what I want people to feel when they see it and enter inside it. Firstly I look at the flow like design, it really makes me feel calm and somewhere where I want to be, and at the same time I wonder how the angles where made. This is the exact same feeling ii get with structural buildings, however they look much different. The aim of this project that I will se myself is to use both structure and flow designs together as one building and get a positive outcome, if both give the same feeling and thoughts then they should be able to work together to achieve the main theme of freedom and limitations.
After looking at the designs of structure and flow and how they will work together I finally needed at function. After trying to gather inspiration through secondary images I kept on realising I needed a large enough function to be able to implement my ideas. For this reason I came up with making a airport as I feel I am able to create a new experience which is relaxing into a stressful environment. However these examples I feel do the same purpose with making a building out of structure and flow and I know it is possible however I do not like how it is separate between external and internal. With my building I wish to make both outside and out filled with both themes to finally achieve the main theme of freedom and limitations.
Specification – Small Local Airport •
Large enough for a small airport comfortable and relaxing - This airport will be something new, it will be purely for local and small flights and people who want an enjoyable experience. This results in a small, however comfortable airport at their use for travel. This is a place where it is almost like a second home and as a result a better and easier flight for our customers.
•
Must have small security team – Since this is an airport for a handful of people there will be need of a security team, patrolling in and out of the area. This is due to some customer’s safety even though it is a small airport.
•
1 terminal – since this is a relatively small airport with not that many flights happening, there will be only 1 terminal needed, and even this can just be a modern waiting area till the planes are ready for take-off. This will be short waiting time too since there isn’t a lot of flights interfering with take-off.
•
Hanger – These are just some of the essentials that an airport of any type will need. I will like to have either 1 larger hanger where it will be able to store at least 2 airplanes or 2 separate ones, both accessible by the maintenance team to look upon the planes. These plans, however, are not massive like a normal passenger aircraft is, and as a result, the hangers will not take a massive amount of space.
•
Fire department (health and safety) – This is due to normal health and safety hazards since this will be placed will still be able for emergency landings, and also any other problems that can actually occur in the airport itself, since planes themselves are a hazard with all the fuel.
•
Parking - Parking is also important, however, this parking can also mean for the people using the airport and also in terms of plane parking since there could be times where there will be more than 1 plane and they will still need to park the plane somewhere safely for the customer to get off the aircraft.
•
Maintenance team – This airport will be one where they are really hands on and all about the customer. As a result, there will be a small team where they are for refuelling, and fixing any problems with the aircraft, in addition to giving it a good once over check before flying. Since there is a small airport, their work can be done really quickly and there will be no hold up at all for the customer who will be waiting in the modern waiting area. This team will also be divided into two, where the other half will have the job of maintaining the airport itself. This includes cooks and cleaners. Keeping the place in top condition will be one of the first priorities to keep the customers satisfied.
•
Fuel deport – Since this is an airport there are some essentials that are needed such as a fuel depot, where I will need to have a good reservation, needed for the clients that I will need to deal with and also any other connecting flights, as we know the planes will not be massive and as a result will need to stop for fuel.
•
Radio tower – One of the most important things needed. Even though this is an airport where there will be a minimal amount of people, there will still be planes above, landing or taking off, and as a result, a radio tower is needed to communicate with the pilot. Especially if there is an emergency landing.
•
Runway – This will be something that is really important and is something that all airports have, however since this airport is really limited for a certain amount of people, there will only be the need for 1 runway. Since this whole airport is at a minimal amount of criteria needed, there isn’t a lot of space it can take up, and this result in me being able to find a nice and spaced area for this airport.
•
Theme – To make this airport it is really important that I have something to base it off. I would like to base it off some of the pavilions imagines that I had gathered. They all had themes of natural and flow, and as a result, I felt it looked really futuristic and also very interesting yet relaxing. I would like my airport to be really open just like a pavilion is like. This includes the walls being made of glass and wooden big structures filling in gaps. I would also like to experiment with other themes such as structural or even could try something new and research brutalist architecture.
•
Modern seating arrangements - This will be something that the customers will be judging the airport on as this is the place where they will spend most of the time in the airport and remember the airport by the modern waiting area. This will be something that will really show the difference between a normal airport and my new modern local one. There will be a number of different services given, however, these services will be given to them, with a couple of top of the range stores for the client's to shop at. The area will most importantly be heavily influenced by the themes used for the interior, in this case, it will be organic and flow.
Brief – Small Local Airport
• In this day and age there are more and more exclusive, entrepreneurs that are looking and seeking new investments, or something to spend their well-earned money. They are constantly looking for different way to do their normal life and to give them the utmost comfort in their busy lives. This also includes some of the most respected and famous people who are looking for a new way to still gain their own privacy, however still travel in class. As we all know these high-end people are constantly traveling, whether it is for business trips or to do live shows, they want to travel in class. In addition to this, even though they will be traveling in first class, the airport itself is often out-dated and crew, and don’t get me started on the delays, something that can really hinder and affect everyone's plans.
• This way of out of the box thinking allows for new functions that haven’t been thought of, and also allow people to have a sense of privacy for once and also have something they can spend their money and know they will get the highest quality of service possible. Allowing people use this airport with ease and comfort, allows a new experience of travel. The way I will achieve this beauty will to be actually looking and monuments and pavilion-like structures, as I feel these often are designed so that they are really out of the box as architects do not create these to be used as functional structures, and as a result they are able to be as wild as their imagination takes them. I think that using these type of designs and inspiration, but scaling down the ideas behind them a little bit so that they are able to be practical with being an amazing idea since not many architects will want to take such a monumental task. This allows me to now create something that will never of been seen with the themes that I have taken to use such as flow and organic, however still try to use the themes of a structure. This is then opening doors to something that has never of been thought of but still have a really good function that can be used, and as result be remembered and become some sort of landmark for architecture, especially with all the high status of the clients. • The way I will achieve this project and the specifications I will want the area to be really open so that u can see the whole airport and nothing is hidden away. Since this is a really small airport, allowing it to be really open gives it the illusion that it is at a much larger size. In addition, you’re able to see every aspect of the beauty of the building. Since I will base it on a pavilion type of building I will use glass as a big key factor such as the walls. Doing allows the building to be really open like and will not feel that you are trapped in like most airports are like. This is the main aim of the build, to give it a new experience and make it feel that you are just in your normal hotel and having a good time. This is why I overtook this task as I feel it is something that I feel needs to happen, and also the reason why I chose these themes as I feel I am able to create this task best with these guidelines.
I wanted to look at some architects that I feel has a link with my own work such as making a airport, but also other buildings with the themes I want. Charles Besjak was one of them when he was in a team to build an airport however when I searched him I found out there where any other designs behind his name. the first tower in the top left hand corner is a building to what I feel has extreme elegance and even though it looks like a simple shape I feel with the designs on it and the sheer size of it, it really makes a beautiful skyscraper. The next structural building bellow is one of my favourite, with triangles and many other abstract shapes connecting together to form one. I feel a amazing job was done with this as the shapes themselves are also filled with patterns and I feel like it really grabs the attention. With Charles also making train stations and other building to cater a large number of people I just had to look into the airport he helped create.
This was the airport that Charles helped to design. The building is called the Chatrapati Shivaji airport Mumbai. It is a extremely elegant design that achieves everything. Firstly, even though the building has a simple shape on the top it really makes the building much more interesting, in such a way that the building is hiding what it really is like inside. This is another example how structural objects can turn something into a really flow like manor. In this case the building looks like it is being made of a number of different slots however the pillars that hold the building u and also the outside is really smooth and flow like, something I wish to achieve. In addition I really like how the building is just one, the sheltered carpark and the main hub itself is one and I feel Charles and his team did a good job of making the themes of flow and structure work together. Finally even through it looks like a simple shape on the outside it is really captivating at every angle you look at It and I feel like this is due to the squares underneath. Other than that I would really like to see some more on the op of the building as it does almost just look like a big rock, still achieving freedom and limitations however.
I wanted to look into more about architects that have created jaw dropping designs. One of which is Moshe Safdie, creator and director of many amazing designs. We have a number of different designs ranging from airports, hotels and study centres. From researching Moshe I found out that the exterior is normally slow like as you can see from the top two images however interior it changes with a mass of light to structure, defiantly what I want.
One design that I really liked was a airport that Moshe Safdie created was the Changi Airport in Singapore. I love the attention to detail and how he incorporated the design to the surrounding area. The building is like thing huge bubble however with immense curves that look different every time you look at it. I love this deign because it is extremely relaxing and jaw dropping when entering. I think what could really make this building flawless was add these trees on the bottom right corner, these where incorporated into the boat design hotel. Moshe Safdie again stuck to his designs where it is extremely curvy on the exterior however the interior is very structural, making a clear contrast. You can see how much space is given inside however I feel like I want to make more of a smaller and local airport. In addition I want to flip the results almost with adding structure outside and flow inside. Or even show both externally and internally. I think if I am able to do this I will break the barrier to achieve freedom and limitations.
For the final architect that I wanted to look at for designs was Curtis W. Fentress. I really liked his designs as I felt it gave something extra to the table on the way he made the buildings flow however added structure to it, on a number of forms such as suspension and pillars. Even though his designs are not my favourite it is the closest to the idea behind what I wanted to achieve. In addition I really like how different sections flowed together however leaving a obvious gap to see though.
An example of a airport that Curtis created was the Incheon International Airport. I really like how the building flows into different sections like they are waves however this is only seen when t a closer view. When looking from a far on top it just looks like a banana shaped airport with a few terminals. However the way Curtis has woven the sections together makes it one building in a extremely flow manor. The same can be said with the interior with it being extremely spacious and flow like. One thing I must point out however is that if you look closer the building is actually made from a number of rectangles and triangles as shown from the image at the bottom. Like I said before the designs I feel are not that exciting however the way it has been made using this idea of lines and geometry really brings together the themes of flow and structure to achieve the idea of freedom and limitations.
To start off using inspiration off for my airport I decided to use something more of a sculpture effect to gather some ideas up before I start turning them into buildings. I come across this type of method where the shapes and sizes of the slabs grow and giving it a very cool visual effect to it. I have tried to do it so that it grows into a dome type and then it also goes underground. I really like the use of se through materials because it gives you nothing to hid and if this was to be turned into some building it would allow a lot of light through. We know this because of the slabs which are spaced enough to allow this light. Something we really want in a airport and customer comfort has to be number 1 priority. In addition this use of open spaces allows everyone t be open to their surroundings, supporting my freedom and limitations theme.
To develop this ide further I decided to use the same method of the shapes progressively growing. However this time I had the shapes laser cut and slotted into a exact base, and that is what the background of this slide is. I really like this method of making and growing ideas because individually the shapes are really structural and jagged, however when the shapes are put together they flow in a manor that now highlights the theme of freedom and limitations.
To follow up with this design what I have done was to take a series of randomly generated lines so that I get these little sections. With these little sections I am then able to use a outline pen to create a building almost. However these little facades also allow me to create some designs in each section, examples include lines, colours and arrows in an almost geometrical method. These patterns of these different lines are a good way to show how different methods are able to give a different outcome. In addition to the freedom and limitation theme this is a really structural and geometrical design. This fits in well because even though it is a really structural building it is almost like the building is free to do what it wants. I can also say the same about the large window plains to allow light in. as a result I feel like this building or idea can be a very good idea for a airport.
I decided to take this random line effect to another level. I made many more lines which covered up the whole page and it cluttered the place unlike the last one. However this time I took the lines and made a series of designs which filled the page. With this I will like to take the design and carry it on since the lines area really random and also the shapes that I took. With these shapes that I created I will either take these shapes to make a building like I have previously done, or I can use them to make a plan view of a base and then start making my way up. In addition I could also use these as roofs of buildings so I drew a series of lines to create depth. These design are also extremely structural design. I will also take these shapes and where the grey lines to score the shapes and then I am able to bend the shapes in a flow matter. Now we have both structural and flow ideas into out freedom and limitations theme, next step would be to now apply the same idea to 3D.
For this next step what I decided to do was to take the line and geometrical shapes that I took and apply the same method to 3D models. I took a foam base representing the paper and I stuck through a number of metal thin wires acting like the pen on the paper. I really like this method as it acts like a really structural method however like the themes of freedom it is able to twist and turn in any other way to create these shapes. In addition I could fill in the spaces and make this like a skeleton of a building.
To carry it on I decided to take different camera angles and use a red outline to come out with these shapes, and through the camera angle it came out very different every time, I will want to use these shapes to show development.
Like I said I was going to use the shapes that I created and what I did was cut them out in thick card and use them to create a actual building. I really like this idea because it is really random and will defiantly like to use this method in later final designs however I am taking the idea of geometrical lines. I like this building because the shapes individually the shapes are very structural however when I put them together in this method then it is a really flow like hint to it. This is what I feel really makes it stick to the freedom theme because we have many different themes working together to create a building. This is a really small building so I will not be able to use this as a airport however if I use a number of more shapes or scale it up then it will be a good idea. In addition applied this massive glass wall as I feel it’s a good touch to allow natural light. In addition I used more trees and a natural background to show natural and organic themes which allows s flow and structural buildings be easier on the eye.
To take this design a step further I decided to apply this model to CAD. This is because it makes it look much more realistic and professional and I am also able to apply it to a proper scene. It is much more structural however it works well with the flow glass and natural surroundings. I feel like this can be applied to the airport however only like a entrance.
I really like this design in this places as I feel it works well being very structural and futuristic in such a more older generation of architecture and it makes it stand out and a big contract however it is also nice to have some change and a difference to such a place.
To change up a little bit however still use some of the same ideas I decided to create a shell or skeleton again however this time with a number of notches. Doing so allows me to wrap string around and a s result I get his almost tower line design. I really like use string as I feel that it gives a very good use and can take something like this building and turn it into something really interesting and very flow like even though using such structural items. In addition I feel like this can be implemented into my airport and sue this almost like a control tower and use this idea of wrapping things around it will be really clever. However on more smaller scales I can ever use this in a lamp shape or even a shelter/ sculpture.
The way I achieved this building was to first laser cut all the pieces which where all the same and use a base. I really like the us of this green string as it almost looks like it is a vine tree wrapped around in addition the string is very messy and in a way it covers more which I like. This is something that I have sued in the past to connect certain areas and it has really developed in some actually using the string as a the building itself and using suspension to hold it.
Again I wanted to apple this model to CAD as I feel it really simplifies the building down to a good scale and then actually makes it look like a possible building. I really like the height o f the build and I feel like I would really serve its purpose however what I like most is how glow like it is, since I did take the designs off a French curve and the way it goes outwards and then locks up at the top.
In addition the inside of the building is really cool and I feel that this can also be used like privacy pods. I applied this building to a normal street to see how well it would fair however it is just too big. I will defiantly use the idea of wrapping around objects as one of the control towers that I aim to do.
Looking at more simpler forms, I decided to take some string which I have been using a lot and this shows progression, and I froze them in ice cubes which I see as natural objects. When together I find them really flow like and cooling and feel like it would be something really cool if it was turned into a building of some sort. The use of this natural source helps my idea of freedom and limitations with organic.
The thing that I really like abut using this method is because the shapes freeze in a shape cast of my choosing, temperately changing a flow object into a solid one. Further more I really like the idea of it being seen as a clear object however still casting shadows. Finally I like the idea I am also do not have to hang the object but also sit it down ,and almost tie it down. I will also want to use this for a actual building CAD.
This is one of my most favourite CAD designs. This s because it implements the use of suspension and it was very simple to make. All the boxes are just copied and pasted in such a way to make it look like a pavilion type. In addition it was taken from the ice cubes so I have developed this method. The use of this method means I am able to take any design however simple and use the x-ray effect to make it like see through in a way. I like using this suspension and line geometry method to make the design in such a way it flows.
These are some of the natural and organic forms and shapes I came across when visiting the Natural History Museum. I thought as well as implementing natural surrounds around the building, why not use natural and organic shapes to create the walls etc.. I really like using these shapes because they come in a number of different shapes and sizes along with textures, which vary in flow like ( plaster casting effect) and also very structural forms, and overall I am able to use these in the freedom and limitations theme I have. Forms like these however I will have to demonstrate in real life if I want to capture the way it is and I feel like these will be the building blocks of my design.
Like I said I took all of the primary images that I took and decided to create shapes using them. With these shapes I am able to make a number of things whether I make theme into walls or plan views like the ideas of the line drawings. I really like these shapes because I feel like I could have arranged them in any way, just like the line drawings in 2D and 3D line models. In addition there is a very big mix between the structural and flow side on each shape, giving it character and many different means of how I am able to play with in. however what I like most is that these are even able to become models themselves as they serve the purpose of being structural and flow however use organic material to gain that path to freedom and limitations
I really liked the idea of the shapes being so structurally sound, colourful and still being able to fit the purpose of what I am doing that I wanted to put them in a backdrop to see how I feel to where I should place such a airport. The reason for this is because these shapes are really out of the ordinary and for that fact I want them to fit around with its surroundings in a way that it odes not look out of place. Yes it will still be a massive contrast however I still feel there is a fine line between a simple contrast to something where I would have to alter to fit the whole area. This first example to my left proves my point since this scene is taken straight of out a normal street. We can see that the colours and how busy the area looks really makes this place unsuitable for such a area. I will need to find a site which is perfect for both people to get too and also not be weirded out by this matter. Individually however I really like the design but I would have to take away the colours to assess the parts I like most. After talking about the site and the building on top, with the picture to the right I decided to take a different approach. This time I too a more isolated area and carefully chose to which building I was going to place where. For this example I took this more structural design at the bottom however the higher we go the more flow it becomes, almost like it is becoming one with the clouds. Like I said there is not much going on around this area which is why it is easy to place such a extreme building here. In addition the colours of the building are also green, white and earth like, which in a way blends in the contrast between such a quiet place to then having a structure in it. This is so far a much better form and site because the use of natural and organic fossil materials making the walls and then putting it in a very natural and organic scene really helps sooth the use of flow and structure in the airport itself. Finally I like this place since it does not seam busy and there is ease of access.
For this next design I felt like I need to incorporate the scene to the building further. In addition this would be a much more practical since this is such a flat scene for airplanes to take off. Furthermore I really like the idea of having the water right next to the building, almost magnifying the use of natural resources. In addition I feel this is a really relaxing scene to have when you try to enter a stressful environment, which is thus also good for the client. This water is very flow to which I also think this building is to a degree. The central part is almost like corral which goes well with the thought of the ocean. In addition we have some really deep blue colours in here linking everything together. One section I really lie is the rocky right side of the building which almost can resemble to rocky sides of the waters edge. Overall I really like this cool and relaxing scene since the building and the site link extremely well with also ease of access. For this design to my left is one that I feel could be one of my favourite designs due to it being very connected to the building. My first point is what the building is actually made of, for example the main towers and the main hub of the building is very crystal like and I feel in a way it suits this ice land like ice structure again linking it to my previous work. Next is that it is really structural, something that I felt would be a nice contrast to the soft pillow like snow. However like before this contrast works because of the colours that come into play. They are really grey scale and cold colours, which is really god link to the gold colours of this place with white ground and sky's. I really like this site as I feel that I cover a vast number of places and gives a wide idea what works where. However my only problem is that I would choose to bring this building a bit more further down so it is on a more flatter surface and also easier to access, since it is already hard to access in such a place.
For this design to my left I wanted to step back a little bit to a more local area, one to where it is more realistic to build in this point of time. I chose this building to sit here since it is a flat plain and it is almost like rocks are crashing out of the ground and growing steadily. I really like this building as I feel like it is really symmetrical and goes well with the buildings design since it is really structural and therefore it is also very geometrical. This site I feel works well too since it is really easy to get too which is good for a airport and is on a flat plain , good for building and runways, however what I also notified is that the wires running through, which again linking to my work I would really like to implement, which is because it already has a good geometry to it but using the idea of line geometry that I have been sing I feel like it would really make the building stand out.
For this final design I felt like taking it to are a really open area however it is still closed off by trees and pathways. The roads are everywhere meaning there is more than 1 way to access this airport. In addition this whole scene to my right is lit up and bright warm colours compared to the last few. It is a really pure white colour with sun hitting the yellow tower illuminating it. I really like this place as I fee like is a really cool and relaxing place almost like I am going to a spa. This relaxing vibe really gives off a good look and feel to this flow like building. You will not notice if however there are some really structural parts to it however like the ice effect I put on previous examples you forget the individual shapes but look at the building as a whole.
To create something new I decided to take the natural and organic themes objects and crystals and make a line drawing out of them. However also adding a lot of detail. This is because then I am able to identity the structure of the objects, if it is very structural, flow like or just random. Once I did that I then took some of the older methods that I developed such as the suspension idea with ropes, string wrapping around pointed edges and also plaster flowing. Taking this and seeing how I am able to apply those developmental ideas and how to incorporate it to this airport design. This is extremely important since I am sticking to the local airport design specification. I have to make sure what the building gives off as feelings to clients. For example this building is both structural and flow, with the structural highlighting the stressful side of airports, however the flow entrance gives off a cool and relaxed feel which is something you will want when entering such an environment.
This was one of my favourite designs because it included both the experience of the user, and also design it around the way a airport is used. Firstly we have the control towers. These are really important since we are having the airport as compact as possible and for that reason the towers will need to within the building. However if you look closely, the towers are in a very structural manner through the shapes and organic materials I used to create them, suiting well with the stressful side to an airport. On the other hand the lower section where the entrance and where the clients stay for their plane is very flow like and this is good as it gives off that relaxed feel to the customers. In addition you can see on the towers that I have used the suspension idea and this really suits my main theme and specifications as it is partible and it allows for that unique experience.
Following through with my design I took something with a similar build to the last due to me really liking the designs with the towers. However this time one tower is structural and the other is flow like, allowing that theme of freedom and limitation. However much more detail has been added but using the fossils and plaster effect on the sides of the main building. This is important as we need to have that calm and relaxed experience but still connect with the organic and natural theme. One thing however that I changed was by adding a strip of glass down the middle of the main building. To make a contrast I have used it in a was that there are a number of colours stripped rods inside the glass, as a result giving that structural benefit but also allowing loads of light but the rods are allowing some shade to come through. This is both practical, sticks to the theme and allows in loads of natural light which is good to have in a relaxed environment that I wish to create.
Trying to stick to the themes and the ideas of the airport, the image to the right I feel does a very good way to make a new layout. The giant crystal structural can be used as the tower which means that this is at usefulness. In addition in the middle there is a giant opening with very big structural inside however it is suspended in the middle, allowing good light in and showing off a lot of space. If not that can also be a glass wall with the rods inside and to the left of the building can be the entrance with the flow like shelter. All of these allow the for the theme of freedom and limitations since there is a big mix going on and giving a good experience to the user.
The building above has really good assets too. With a fan like fossil use a one big tower, showing both structural through the material however flow with the patterns and the shape. In addition we have a very flow like plaster base however in the middle there is a spike ball which really sticks out. This is really good since the spikes come out and act like a entrance and guards. Apart from it being really structural I will use the thread like previously. I really like that since it still acts like it is in suspension. I do not really like how this is laid out however I really like some of the features of the building such as the fan or the spike ball, this is because it allows to bring the themes of structure to freedom and limitations.
To analyse the images for my final design I decided to take highlights and key features of each drawing to what I will like to include. For example I really like this design because there are 2 towers which are important to my airport but also are in contrast with each other with both having in flow and structural look. I like the idea that they both link to freedom and limitations in the middle. The way the main building is structured is one of the most important methods. The way the building starts structurally and then merges with the flow sections, showing how it is possible to have both to give the freedom and limitations theme. In addition it gives a good feel to the airport as it looks different from each way you look at it and making the building unique.
For this section it war structurally sound however the flow fibres interlink together to make the structure. this is different because it is normally structurally objects flow when together. This can also act like a shelter like I stated earlier. I feel like with its flow look at the beginning and is like a warm opening. One of the towers will have to be structural and I feel like this is going to be one of them. I really like this structural crystal as the tower. It can be made of glass which is a good effect and almost a look of nothing to hide.
Like before I really want to include this wired glass in, allowing natural light and has a structural density inside to flow in a water like manor, something I really want to add to the building to show off the themes.
To carry on with the line geometry effect that I am improving I am taking the ball of spikes and I want to add in the string line the models I made at the start, I feel it gives a larger illusion of the building.
I took the shapes that I had randomly generated from the organic shapes that I took. With them I drew the designs on them to represent the designs and the flow or structural aspect. With them I created this first design. I do not really like this design as I feel like it does not have the right features and does not excite me as I feel there are no key features. The towers however what I do was make a cone out of see through plastic sheets and added glue inside to give off a flow like design. I also added in other materials such as foam board and metal mesh to experiment however I still do not approve of this design. One aspect that I like however is how the greenery almost canopies over and almost taking it over.
This design is something I really like since I have added this mesh room I feel like I has given me this really futuristic look to it. In addition I feel like it has a really good shape to one which I feel I can use in a airport such as the entrance. In addition the use of metal rods and wire facades play a important to almost shield it. Again the roof is mesh with is like the rods of glass I spoke about.
Feel like this really connects with the them of freedom and limitations using metal which is structural in a flow manor such as trees, and organic.
Because I really liked the previous model that I created and for that reason I used it to make a more realistic CAD version. I really like this as I changed up some of the scales but also substituted the mesh roof for wired one. This is because it links well with my suspension idea. In addition I took the same organic wall design however this time I have also made them out of wood which helps to show off that organic feel. So far we have structural and organic however the way the building is put together it is in a flow manor which is very evident from the inside views. The glass faรงade that I included I changed to glass and this could be somewhere where I include the glass with rods inside. Finally I have changed it so that instead of the metal trees I put normal ones in, for this reason I feel this building breaks into that idea of freedom and limitations.
Using this really flow and illusion like background I feel works well with the structure of the building and also the metal mesh guard wall as I feel it gives a good effect as it flows like water.
For the final model that I will create using the random shapes, I have created a more elevated building as I though I will need to contrast between the other 2 buildings. I really like this building as I feel it is much more compacts with having the tower as the building itself. In addition I really like the fact that the top roof is elevated up as the middle part almost acts like some ventilation. I really like this design as everything used to create it is very structural however it almost melts at the bottom, linking well the use of freedom and limitations theme.
This is the final outcome of the model before once I have generated it in CAD. I really like this model since I have kept its height which I felt was something that give it that key feature. In addition I have also been able to generate the floating roof however to make it even more interesting and allowing in more light. However one change that I did take was that I elongated the building so that it was a more practical to use parts off for my airport. From the photos however we can see right away that the walls are very low like and this really highlights the idea of freedom and limitations. However one of my favourite buildings due to its wall shapes and design.
For my final CAD model I had combined all the key aspects that I felt where necessary to the themes that sub themes that I have chosen, along with architects and airport have all be compressed to this final CAD building to which I will then clean up in my final physical model. As you can see I have included the entrance from other designs and also floating roof of a clock tower. In addition there is a massive contrast I feel between flow and structure on this building to which I hope to clean up and smooth out in the physical model. I have included a number of elevation views and I feel I have given it a reasonable size for a local airport and enough thought to it. I really like how both towers have their own personality to it too and the use of trees sees how easy it is to make it more earth like and natural. A mass amount of glass was added too to let natural sunlight. Overall once I have smoothed out everything I feel like this has achieved my theme of freedom and limitations just like the architects I researched.
To give my building a bit more character I wanted to place it in a scene to which I felt was suited to my building. I wanted it to be down to earth and not in a had to get to environment. Obviously the scene will be more build up instead of wooden fences however I wanted to see how it would feel in such a easy access/ local, however distant to any other houses. In short I wanted a green area so that the pollution does not effect people near by. In addition I really like how it is connected with nature itself and will design something before creating my final design as a scene.

This image is the back of the building, showing both towers and the terminal exit a the bottom.
This images shows the flow tallest tower in the design and is taken from the front.
Finally coming to the end of the project I have created my final outcome. I really think that this model has answered my questions to how flow ad structure is able to come together, united as one with the use of natural and organic organisms to achieve a theme of freedom and limitation. I really like this building as I feel it accomplished a lot with it being extremely complex however it is really enjoyable to look at. With everything that I have build up is in this building from the architects to the lie geometry that I have used has all come into one to form this airport. This is a truly unique design and to this point it introduces suspension. The more I look at it the more I feel like I'm exploring something new.
I will firstly talk about the base. I have done it so that it is tinted acrylics so that you are able to see a shade of what is underneath and this airport does have a underground carpark as I will demonstrate later on. Using foam board to build my way up and the made a basic wall I was able to take both structural and flow objects and stick them on top to create the airport. For structural I used white and clear acrylic triangles and for the flow I used a translucent colour in the natural and organic shapes I put together from the primary images of the natural history museum. Doing so not only shows flow and structure however the way I have incorporated natural and organic into the walls. Like I spoke about before I separated the two because I wanted people to see the clear contrast, not like other architects. However I still did apply some structure to the flow side. If you look close enough I have put in a hatched design in it, showing the wired glass wall and how it allows in a limited amount of light, showing structure as well as flow. If you see closer in the middle where the entrance is I took the idea of using that long entrance, in a way it lets people wait for what is inside and that idea of suspense is really interesting. I made the entrance very structural around the sides however I used a glass flow patterned roof on top to merge the two together. Overall I feel that with the themes I have done a really god job however I still need to look in closer of how this looks as a building to see if I have achieved the idea of freedom and limitations.
This is the image of the main building facing the front showing both towers and the archway and entrance, showing both flow and structure on the sides.
This image is take from above of the actual building itself, showing both themes and ideas, like suspension and the wired glass effect. Especially they way flow and structure ease together.
This is a overhead image of the back, showing the terminal waiting area at the bottom and the entrance, however with the glass showing off how the towers work and the detail in them.
Now that I have spoken about the themes I feel that I need to make sure that this building has achieve the specification and brief that I wanted it to complete. We have a main hub, radio towers, runway and all the other add on that are essential to a airport to function. I feel that I have done a really good job. Not only this however I feel that I have used the idea of the shapes together really well, with the first entrance being really straight lined, however the terminal gate to enter the plane waiting space is really flow like. But not only this it is surrounded by the building itself and also natural and organic feels all around. I really like how the flow and structurally merge upwards up until the towers but then with the laser cutter I have etched patterned resembling the themes. Using this interlocking method to create the building has allowed me to make it much more compact and very complex on the outside from first glance however the closer you look the more detail and they way it is structured it becomes. I have applied this method throughout the whole site, with the sculptures on the sides, to the archway that I have added showing a flow and natural theme however the ground is paved with hexagonal slabs. This links in with the main body of the building. In addition to this I have again added the idea of suspension throughout the building as if it where a tent. The reason for this is that I have used it on the flow side because I look at them as clouds and in a way I am holding them down and in place. These are one of the main reasons to why I feel I have achieved the use of freedom and limitations.
Full size show of the model, you can mainly see the structural facades and the flow in the background however shows the road and the runway.
This slide is showing how the hinges work to show the carpark, you can see all of the components in this image, and a better view of the building as a whole along with the runway. You can also see how the road underground works and also the plan view of the car park itself.
I wanted to add something really special that was interesting to the building that people are able to discover. What I have done is create a platform for the building to sit on, however this platform also has a hinge so now with the leather strap on the bottom left hand corner I am able to open up the top half to see the car park underneath. This is something in my specification and does not play a important role in my specification however I liked the way the cars go to the underpass however that can come out the other way and under the road to get back on it like normally, allowing this natural flow. I though even though I was not able to make this in a flow or structural manor I felt like it was important as I wanted something practical that would work. This obviously had to be done to scale. Which brings me on to talk about scale as a whole which I was able to apply all they way through, with the large archway, entrance, building size and natural life such as the trees. This giving it a real like feel to it allowing people to see the freedom and limitation theme.
This image now shows the main building however the flow side, showing how each overlaps the other and creates a darker shade. This image shows the building in a plan view with the runway and everything and details, along with the natural life around it.
I feel that overall the attention to detail with the building was does really well. With the grass and trees to look at the scale, but also the road and underground carpark with flowing method. This also goes to the runway with me allowing to put in all the road markings of a plane. All of these I feel where extremely important if I wanted to make something completely abstract, however then still being able to tell what it is, such as looking at the clock tower. In addition to this the more I look at the main building the more I realises what it is like. With the mix of the triangular acrylic pieces and the flow translucent fragments, it is like the structural parts are like the wings of the planes, and the flow sections are like the clouds of the sky. I feel this adds a really good touch as everything is not coming together, even with this crazy design you are still able to backtrack to where I got each section. I am also really happy about the clear materials I used as I wanted to relate that to the airport in Singapore. In addition I really like these type of links, such as the suspension idea I had at the very start, but also all this line geometry that I have been able to include which was something I really liked and showed throughout my project.
Evaluation
• To finally evaluate my project as a whole leading up to the final design I feel the work that I have produced has been really good and up tot standard, following through the work that I have had since the start right up to the very end. I have not wasted any work it has either gone into my finally design or it was a experiment to explore new ideas. • The first was when I first started using the suspension idea. I have carried it out through my design and then used it on my final model. In addition I gave a explanation to how and where I have used it. I used the wire to almost hold down the clouds on the flow section to which I have created with detail. This then links into the idea of the structural and flow part being as the aeroplane wings clouds. To elaborate on the idea of the flow sections they where made using the primary images that I used together and formed as one from the natural history museum. They where all organic shapes and when I put them together they formed a really flow like shape, almost like clouds and something really interesting to use as a façade. In addition to this I further developed the idea by using the glass like effect on it by adding etches on it to look like the wired glass design that I previously spoke about. This just shows how ever though it came up with 2 different developments I was also then able to merge them together. In addition to his through the ideas that I developed, throughout my work I used a range of line drawings and geometry methods to come up with new shapes that I am able to use. This came from first drawing lines on paper, to then 3D metal wire and so on. The skills I developed from this helped me with the final idea too. I used the ice cube design and took the idea hope everything fitted together in a abstract way however because of the way I designed it still flowed even with structural properties. I used this line geometry design through out and can be clearly seen by the etching of the clear acrylic. In addition this also ties in with the ice cubes because it gave me the idea of using range of clear, translucent and solid colours. These are some of many progressively different methods that I have come up with and developed through the work I have produced and they have been refined in such a way that they can also because small details to my complex airport so that it is almost like a little stimulus but I is also the groundworks of design. If it wasn’t for the small details this building would not have been meaningful.
• So it is not only the themes that I have been able to correlate and do well but it is also the way everything is laid out, with the exterior that follows the specification and brief perfect . It is a new local small airport however with a twist. It is a new experience for many to see such a diffident building, and the exterior speaks for itself, something I tried to achieve when I aw the airports or the architects that I researched . I like the idea that people will stop and think about the building, how it was design and made because I feel that is one of the things that draw people . In addition I like the way I have laid out everything, which is how it fits with the road and the archway along the carpark and runway. It is a small and enclosed space however it has everything that I asked for. This is all included in my specification too, by having the large enough for a small airport comfortable and relaxing, small security team, 1 terminal, hanger, fire department, parking, maintenance team, fuel deport, radio tower, runway. This also makes it really interesting because they way I have incorporated everything was in w ay included with the building . The reason for this is because it is more of a local area and I wanted to use the minimal amount of space. This is also the reason to why some of the structural and flow facades were sticking out as they where places were to put, the hangers, fire deport, maintenance team etc.. In addition I think I have done well with the place I decided to leave the airport. It is really easy access and it is something that gives a local small area like this a boost but not with too much of the hassle. In addition I feel like I fits in with the theme of natural and organic. • To conclude I feel that I have achieved the them and idea of freedom and limitations in many different ways and I think this is due to all my development work that I started to play with the very start.
