MANGA SPOTLIGHT “HOT GIMMICK” In company-owned rabbit-hutch apartments live tenants who can't afford to live anywhere else. And in the complex where sixteenyear-old Hatsumi Narita lives, the rumormongering, self-righteous landlady, Mrs. Tachibana, rules everyone’s lives. Get on Tachibana's bad side, and life becomes hell. When Hatsumi has to buy a pregnancy test because her popular sister Akane thinks she's pregnant, Mrs. Tachibana's son, Ryoki, who used to bully Hatsumi as a kid, catches her and promises not to tell the world about Hatsumi's secret as long as she becomes his slave. Suddenly Azusa, Hatsumi's protector in their youth, reappears to save her again! He's moving back into the neighborhood! Despite the budding romance between Hatsumi and Azusa, Ryoki has control over her through the secret that could ruin the lives of everyone in Hatsumi's family, and he hasn't forgotten who his slave is! And he'll make sure Hatsumi doesn't forget either! ■

“Pet Shop of Horrors” is an intriguing and enjoyable read. I would personally recommend it to any fans of the old “Tales from the Crypt” show. Each volume has no less than four short stories where a visitor to the shop breaks the rules and pays the price, and in manga, poetic justice is as sweet as it is scary. But I suppose I’d better tell you a bit more about the shop and characters – the establishment is a small (or is it small?) pet shop, run by Count D, a beautifully effeminate Chinese man who has his secrets. He sells exotic pets to ordinary people that come with three strings attached, but he’s also in the self-proclaimed business of love and dreams. Inevitably, the buyer will break one of the three rules in Count D’s contract, and meet a sticky end. This is where our other recurring character comes in – Detective Leon Orcot, determined to bring Count D to justice. He keeps getting cases – dead customers of Count D’s shop, and suspects the mysterious man of being of being involved in their deaths. Count D, however, gets away scot-free every time. After all, the contracts are all properly done up! Some of the stories in volumes one and two will be familiar to those who’ve seen the OAV, but the manga offers much more --- ‘Dragon’ in volume two was my personal favorite, and has a howling funny ending. So far, the library carries only the first two volumes, but sources say we’ll get to see more of this series! Pet Shop of Horrors gets five paw prints. Fans of this episodic style of storytelling, and darkly fantastic horror, should definitely check it out!

A smoke-filled alley in Chinatown harbors Count D's Pet Shop. The pets sold here aren's your everyday variety and the Count prides himself on selling Love and Dreams in the form of magical creatures that come with an exclusive contract. But buyers beware. If the contract is broken the Count cannot be held accountable for whatever may happen. A fascinating and macabre look into the very soul of human nature.■

Otaku Nuku REview Written by: Anneko

Hi! Today we have a super-cool treat for you—a review! What?!! That’s not super-cool? Well, you’ll read it anyway, won’t you? You will? Huzzah! I’ll be reviewing a video game for you in this issue—‘Animal Crossing’! ‘Animal Crossing’ is one of the stranger games to come to the states from Japan. You play as a little person in a town full of animals. The object of the game is to go about daily life in this town full of animals, doing odd jobs to make money, going fishing, picking fruit, or digging up treasure. You can also collect shells, catch bugs, and find fossils. All of these things can get you money, which you use to expand and furnish your house (once you pay it off, that is!). The game moves in real time, even when you’re not playing it, so you have to talk to your animal pals as often as possible, or they’ll forget about you or move away. You can also write letters to them, but be careful—if you don’t talk to them often enough, they think your letters are creepy, because you don’t know them well enough! The characters are adorable, and ‘animalese’, one of the languages you can make them speak, is fun to listen to. It’s easy enough to play for kids to get into it, but it’s absorbing and addictive, fun for adults, too! The graphics may not be spectacular, but they’re not bad by any definition, and it is very cute.

Kenshin Himura (Rurouni Kenshin)

I give ‘Animal Crossing’ four and a half paw prints out of five—sure, there are a few places where you might want more, but once you start playing, you can find yourself running around your town for hours!

ANIME SPOTLIGHT “FULL METAL PANIC”

Gift: Angelic Layer Vol. 1 + Artbox plus $5.00 gift certificate (View requirements beneath bulletin board)

On the surface, Kaname Chidori appears to be a normal, popular high school student. The problem is, she doesn't realize just how popular she is. Unbeknownst to her, a group of terrorists believe she possesses the special powers of "the Whispered," and they're out to kidnap her. Enter Sousuke Sagara, a young, hotshot agent from the stealthy anti-terrorist organization Mithril. Will he be able to protect Kaname without her finding out what's really going on? Or will he just drive her crazy as he tries to fit in as her awkward, gung-ho, war-crazed classmate? ■

REVIEW Written By: Rin This series is as funny as they come. I agree that His and Her Circumstances is very funny. But this takes the cake. How can you not enjoy a military, upstart, handsome man being beat up by a girl? The humor in this series is fantastic, but so is the action. You really want to know what happens next. It’s an addiction, so don’t watch it unless you can get at least 2-3 dvds at once, you’ll come back for more… I give this series five paws out of five.
