RÉSUMÉ

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

HI I'm Rio

Rio Chen is a young, creative and also funny small dot on earth. He tends to become an artist in the Master degree program in the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago, but by times he learned that the word “Communicator” is more accurate to describe himself as a position and expectations. In the past few years, he has been worked with Su, who is a really talented wood craftsman in Taiwan. Later on, their works such as wood bag and bamboo-cement objects are the best present for an output. From material exploration to homeware design, every step he took was a little dangerous but cautious. He believes in small, crazy ideas in design and assumed that creativity is right here somewhere between us. He used not only common materials that processed with ultimate techniques, but also some rare material that perfectly presented the creativity of an object. His design practices are based on the perspective of a young man who combines his hometown culture with state-of-the-art tech and crazy ideas that advocate a rule-breaking policy. Yes, this is Rio. He is conservative and somehow insanely unsatisfied with the current situation at the same time. Diversified mindsets define a unique vision for creating an object.

Part I.

What if we reverse the normal logical thinking of a bag? To challenge people's imagination and creativity, the first concept of the Would Bag was born. Instead of fabric and leather that are common in the market, I started to think of a shell-shaped bag.

Sketch At first, the goal is to innovate the most unimagined bag. Our ideas are initiated from the style, function, etc. Then we target on the material. We have never seen people using a bag like this, which is a wooden bag covered with plastic shells. We want the privacy to be shown to the public. In our childhood, toys and candies were usually put inside a box with a plastic cover on it. Things inside the box look even more attractive, and that is the miracle we want to create. We not only want to rejuvenate customers, but also to show off their personal belongings.

Part I.

the Process For this project, I am honored to collaborate with Taiwan's top wood craftsman Su. At first, Su and I tried several ways to achieve it, we used thin wood board and bent it with steam. When it was almost being done, the tiny crack occurred, and that couldn't satisfy us. In the end, we chose the original way, the logs. Cutting logs into the shape we designed was not hard, but leaving too much unnecessary margin was adding too much weight to the bag. We used the milling machine to help us reduce up to eighty-five percent of the wood of our bag. In order to create a spacious bag, this step was indispensable. Finally, the process of rounding off corners and grounding down the surface of the bag were the most time-consuming process. However, they are worthy of recalling, since they are marvelous works.

Part I.

the Handbag It is a fashionable way for you to handle your daily life, including mobile phone, purse, wallet, and easy card. Whatever you need while you are taking a short walk is included. A strap of leather softens the wood material. It also provides a good texture. The shape of the wood shell is designed to make it handy, and that makes it even more convenient when you carry it.

the Briefcase A humorous way to light up your working Monday blue. It packs up not only important files and laptop, but your mobile phone, headset, and powerbank. Plus, in the front part of the briefcase, it is covered with a rounded-square shell. The design of the briefcase is separated into two segments, which are wood and leather. The bottom of the wood provides anti-collision function for items inside the case, whereas the leather part provides a smoother texture and tenderness to lift the briefcase up.

the Backbag A brand new way to pack up your daily life, carrying your mobile phone, headset, and powerbank. What's more, in the front part of the backpack, equipped with a clever fluid shell. The main container is on the side of where the straps are, providing a private place for you to put valuable belongings such as laptops and wallets.

The memorability is the vital step we aim to achieve, what will remain the same when we leave?

the Rebranding The Lego company may be on the way to redefine themselves, but the commercial market in Asia is not positive. The strategy of Future Lab and Robotic field has its pros and cons, but we are aware of the living space, more specifically, our home. To seize the oppor tunity of c h a n g i n g t h e re l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n c o m pa n y a n d customers, the trend of ''maker'' is expected to increase. With the help from the social media network and ourselves base community, the dream of a co-creation concept is possible to be fulfilled. The LIVING LABORATORY is set up for the creative research, a flatform included open-resource and innovation process from public to private. 21

“ We never buy products that are not finished yet.

LIVING LABORATORY LIVING LABORATORY is a co-creation project between the Lego enterprise and customers, and it's a product research design in the living-house area. We expect not only for the material exploration, but the evaluation of the creative ideas. Nowadays, living products have shown their possibilities. We help users to think about the single element in their life. The scenery in our house will not remain the same, therefore, we provide a concept for them to change the atmosphere of the living room, and an experiment to participate.

Lego advocates customers to build up models out of their creativity. In this project, we move on the ambition to the living room. When customer purchase the product from retail stores, they will get semi-manufactured product such as a pack of cement or a standardized bamboo part. Continuing innovate process to the next level and targeting on consumer behavior. 22

as well. The bamboos' compressive strength is better than woods' and bricks' or even concrete's. We choose to mix bamboo with cement, which are natural elements with warm solid materials. The meaning of the exploration is to reflect the mental conflict inside our thoughts, and the process of this project is far more meaningful and educational than we expect.

the Process We use the Taiwan native bamboo ''Phyllostachys edulis''(or tortoise-shell bamboo). After being light polished, bamboos a re re a d y f o r t h e c e m e n t f i l l i n g . The most crazy and innovative part of the project is the balloon. People take advantage of creative balloon to shape form out of their ideas. Therefore, we use balloon to fill the cement, with the diversity of its possibilties, we are looking for ward to achieve the unexpected form. We put bamboo and cement together, which is the same as the LEGO's combination work. With the help of drilling machine, we cut off the edge from the bamboo. And we cur ve it into round-smooth shape afterwards. Form follows function. Plus, we aim to make the product useful and handy. From candlestick to newspaper rack the variety of the living-space products we create are just to, name a few.

Thoughts I am eager for the interesting m a te r i a l d i s c o ve r y. I t to o k u s nearly two months to achieve this job. From the moment we s t a r te d to f i n d t h e Ta i w a n e s e bamboo until we make sure that cement did work well with the bamboo. In 2017, Su and I finished the WouldBag series. We accomplished this impossible task in just two months. Moreover, we also made it different from others. This time, our goal is to explore the living space quality. With the new idea and aesthetic, the Living Laboratory is the answer. â–Ş this page, the natural bamboo texture.

29

Part I.

Engage and joy Based on the customer purchase journey and participation in the LIVING LABORATORY, the whole new idea is planned for the public to join the process of happiness that we create for everyone. After the project, the spirit still live on. In August 2018, I went to an educational tour in rural area of Taiwan with PLG team. It was the first time that the design subject has been delivered to the kids. I chose to let the secondary school kids do the cement product, combined with the daily necessities like cups, bowls, gloves and balloons. For me, the LIVING LABORATORY's experiment will never end.

Introductory In twentieth century, people start to use resin, a huge amount of plastics are made for our daily life. Improvements in chemicals decrease the production cost but proliferate the durability as well. Flash back to nearly one century, may we start again : This is an experimental record of Rosin, a reboot from the beginning of material. Nowadays, resources are aggressively consumed, we regard material as a foundation of an object. It plays a pivotal role in not only gently slowing down the vicious present tense but also opening a new era. Trace back to the root, we tend to dig out more possibilities in the use of source material. Natural resin is one of the most popular raw material we use for decades, the potential is attractive enough for us to take a closer look of it. This is our starting line, the birth of numerous imaginations and ideas. From a perspective of earth resident, we strike a balance between appearance and function base on existing resources. Rosin resin displays a versatile forms and contour during the working procedure, it proves a distinguishing feature as an external fact of an object. Rosin resin acquired advantages through advanced experiment, it brings higher performance in functionality to life as an internal fact of an object. Rosin has marvelous color and luster like an amber but more ubiquitous in our life. We present different phases of rosin in terms of daily product application through trials over and over again. Raw material transform into multiple shapes and forms via unique process with delicate arrangement. Converting the primitive feature of material and establish a new stage for it. Demonstrate the potential of rosin resin with experiment record and share the accessibility with the public.

Part I.

Rosin from the Pine tree Rosin, which is extracted from the pine tree, is widely used as source material with the features of electric insulationË´ antislip Ë´ high transparency and fragile at the same time. Maybe some of you acknowledge Rosin as a violin partner, with its high friction feature, Rosin are used as maintainence to make the string of violin bow maintain its sound quality. At the same time, the friction that we mentioned also caused a sticky gluelike texture in Rosin. Despite the fact that liquified Rosin is hard to be molded into shapes, it still has the potential in versatile phases and beautiful luster. We planned to strengthen the material structure by blending ingredients together.

36

material

the Experiment Within three months, the best spirit for experiment is never give up. We have tried over forty different liquid and solid to optimize Rosin, from wax to flour. The priciple of our ingredient is base on a low-tech environment. If we can find a way to strengthen the Rosin, then everyone can do so. Therefore, from choosing mixture ingredients to experiment facilities are all designated to fit in our simple live. The biggest benefit of natural resin is that we do not need to add or produce any more resourses into our planet. The other important value is to maintain the beautiful color and luster of rosin due to the appearance of Rosin is pretty much alike from amber.

Part I.

“More possibilities of shaping resin in the unknown do we explore

Over forty kinds of natural and artificial ingredients working through the trial to explore the accessibility and possibility of composition via physical transformation. Finally, in order to increase the density and toughness, we added amber wax and soap base separately. Throughout the dropping test, we can tell the difference between each ingredients durability. From the testing trial we have made, there are three of them which are more stable than others. Which are Gelatin, Amber wax, Soap base. 1. Pectin A vegetarian version of Gelatin, or maybe jelly is what you are thinking of. Instead of bones, Pectin is made out of seaweed. The one we can buy at the grocery store is combined with sugar, which can stabilize the Pectin from the humid problem. We add Pectin into heated Rosin liquid, the hot temperature helps Pectin melt but also create scorched black ashes. Some flaws would not affect the appearance significantly, but durability is still not enough for basic usage. 2. Amber wax Amber wax and Amber are not related materials, Amber wax is a little bit yellowish-translucent which mostly used in translucent candle. When you add too much wax into Rosin, the mixture will become more sticky and glue form. It results in an unsteady situation, the Rosin mixture goes out of shape easily. We found out that the wax mixture is more suitable for a stick or paste an object, just like glue. 3. Soap base Soap base is the basic material of making a soap, which is consist of alcohol and glycerine. The mixture of soap base and Rosin shows the tenacity and toughness. Despite the fact that we cannot break through it with an one-meter high drop test, the color turns turbid which is a big deal for Rosin that has a beautiful color. In order to test further possibility, we mix amber wax and soap base together. With the advantage of durability and tenacity, different proportion mixtures are set up to experiment. Finally, we have the result of 1 : 2 : 50, which is soap base / amber wax / Rosin. 40

material

Phase One : Solid Form After Rosin being optimized, the further structure testing with larger mass can be started. We use wood mold base to finish the process. One of the benefit is convienient, we can easily built up a wood mold with our handcraft skill and material. The other benefit is that by slowing down the dropping rate of temperature, we can strengthen the liquid Rosin at the same time. This side table perfectly presents the rosin's outstanding performance of adhesion. The brass stool stuck into the Rosin without component parts, you can even sit on it like a chair without a doubt.

Part I.

Phase Two : Application [Further Rosin description through extended application.] We chose to filling module unit first and shaped into specific form later due to the difficulty of molded problem with liquified Rosin. The transparency and color of finished object are controlled by the thickness and the time duration of the heated process. We arranged several action and procedure for ever y object in this section, such as heatgun shaping ˴ hot-tube pressing ˴ ice-cold crackling ˴ unitshape dropping and low-temperature molding. Rosin brings the possibility into full play via temperature controlled with processing facility.

▪ SETH, applied with Hot-tube Pressing. ▪ SKINNY & CHUBBY CHLOE, applied with Ice-cold Crackling. ▪ SOPHIE, applied with Liquified Merging. ▪ EFFY, applied with Heat-gun Shaping. 44

material

Summary People asking why we chose Rosin and how we decided to applied various kind of process of it. The way we deliver our strengthen rosin is not green enough to be called as an environmental-friendly product, when we pour wax and soap base into Rosin instead of other options we had, the decision is made. The fact that we believe in a so-called "low-tech" situation is the first step we head into faliure of a material experiment. There are tons of materials that are more suitable for making Rosin strong and tough, when we finished the last step of our experiment, we face the truth is that our solid rosin mixture will soften in times and hot temperature as well. The issue is even more serious than we thought. As scientist found out the way to develop Rosin as a more practical material to use in industry, a lot of people believe we made it to the end. But in this case, I am sure that the faith of making public awareness of natural resources importance will still go on.

Core value The most impor tant value of this project is to create a warm technological product. I found out that the public over rely on the technology, a cold hard tech. However, the question is, can we live without it? I think the answer is obvious. In this case, its vital to change the imagination of the appearance of technological product design. The world needs more warm design instead of cold and hear tless electronic devices.

Nowadays, the technological products are seamlessly integrating into our lives. We choose to welcome the innovative products and not to face the problems left behind. Facing tons of electronic devices is making our lives deadly dull. Wires which are from computers, monitors, speakers, and even charging gadgets tangled up together. Thoughts This finished display product is the best example of the high-tech 3D printer (SLS printed); the free form surface, the thinnest part of nine millimeter, the access of detachable parts. Although the SLS printed may not be the best answer of the industrial design's mass production requirement, but we can root for the possible difficulties in the printing process. This is not a traditional way, but a new option for exploring new methods. As for the birth of the City Forest, the free form surface is built by the T-Spline with Rhinoceros Scale and specifications are all set up that . precise enough for the production.

the Space Age period The design background started at the space age period. During the 1940s, two of the biggest countries in the world, which were the United States and the Soviet Union started a serious competition on space technologies and exploration. It was a boom of culture and the public imagination. It was not until mid-1960s that dramatic design culture, such as space age, atomic age, and googie architectural style popped up. It caught people's eyes with streamed-line, specific colors like metallic and bright colors, curved or rounded form. Later on, the era of space age outshined the normal houseware products and even walked on the fashion catwalk. This is the space age, a time when people dare to dream about their future and unknowned universe.

Part II. I'm the phantom, in the dark. so vague, fade away. I'm the teller, in your heart. you need it, can't get away. TELLER, there's something you can't tell, so now you know.

the Idea I think the sketch is the best present of some part in our life; exhausted, fraustrated, fainted, bored, dozy... Maybe we can call this pressure in general, one of our nightmare. When the sun goes down, do you ever think of your fear? The main idea of the Teller is from the ghost behind your back, it is not intend to scare anyone but help us.

the Ratio The body proportion has precisely measured from the golden ratio, to ensure the shape itself present a perfect appearance. We believe that not only the form that pursues the ultimate perfection, it should also seamlessly present the accurate function of necessity. the Epilogue Those seven projects included material exploration and designed objects is the best present of my current academic practices. In the past three years, the design is the most challenging vocabulary. To create a memorability product and encourage people to take part in the core value of the idea, I tried several ways to progress on my design ability. Most of my projects have collaborated with another artist or designer (or my classmate); to plan a wonderful experiment with these excellent people is an indispensable step. For me, the biggest harvest is that everyone has a different perspective of this world. What we can do is take a guess or define the problem from the methods of design, but looking through other people’s eyes is a completely contrary way. I learned a lot from my teammates, the joint project shows the vital element of design: communication and comprehension. Material exploration is one of my favorite territories, when we talk about a product, there must be something special enough to be outstanding. In the future, it will be the most exciting pursuit that I figure out the designing method of my product in the material science territory. Would Bag aims to achieve the imagination and creativity of an idea, which we seldom think of a bag would make out of wood. Living Laboratory challenges the original business model of the Lego company, rebrand it with a delighting and engaging experiment in our living room with customers is also important. Discover Unknown: Rosin is the last design practice in an undergraduate program. To ensure design objects combined aesthetic form with thesisbased experiment, the testing background data is solid. With three material explorations, I tried hard to keep every project more advanced and meaningful than the last one. For me, designed objects in case of product design is not only meeting the mass production standard but also expressing an aesthetic opinion from one's point of view. City Forest is the most aesthetic and functional balanced product; people need warm living design instead of cold heartless electronic devices. Precision by Pal is targeted on businessmen and women; a customized product for them to deal with the daily busy routine. Space Tripper I is a future envisioning virtual reality headset that strongly evoked public awareness of the brave and fearless curiosity, with the reflection of the unique Space age. The Teller is a 3D computer aid software figure, combining tech and function into one form. June 2019, Rio Chen.
