AUTOBIOGRAPHY
HI I'm Rio
My name is Chen, Jiun-Yu, or you can call me Rio. I am born and raised in Taichung City, Taiwan. I major in Industrial Design and minor in Architecture. In my childhood, I believed in myself that I could become a designer one day. I was first fascinated by the consumer electronic devices at the age of fifteen. At that time, I started to make a smartphone model from paper and cardboards. Later on, those models were really close to the authentic phones that my parents could not differentiate them from the real ones. It was not until the fact that I entered National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (my current college) did I realize that my dream came true. I am lucky enough to become one of the students in my campus. My classmates are talented and inspirational enough to keep me motivated in order to challenge myself. To collaborate design work with others is the best way to learn more from their perspectives. Design is a field full of diverse cultures and backgrounds. I spend some time on architectural design since the innovative art of buildings is always an appealing topic. There are many tasks in the field of design, and some of them are yet to be explored.

What if we reverse the normal logical thinking of a bag? To challenge people's imagination and creativity, the first concept of the Would Bag was born. Instead of fabric and leather that are common in the market, I started to think of a shell-shaped bag.
Sketch At first, the goal is to innovate the most unimagined bag. Our ideas are initiated from the style, function, etc. Then we target on the material. We have never seen people using a bag like this, which is a wooden bag covered with plastic shells. We want the privacy to be shown to the public. In our childhood, toys and candies were usually put inside a box with a plastic cover on it . Things inside the box look even more attractive, and that is the miracle we want to create. We not only want to rejuvenate customers, but also to show off their personal belongings.

the Process For this project, I am honored to collaborate with Taiwan's top wood craftsman Su. At first, Su and I tried several ways to achieve it, we used thin wood board and bent it with steam. When it was almost being done, the tiny crack occurred, and that couldn't satisfy us. In the end, we chose the original way, the logs. Cutting logs into the shape we designed was not hard, but leaving too much unnecessary margin was adding too much weight to the bag. We used the milling machine to help us reduce up to eighty-five percent of the wood of our bag. In order to create a spacious bag, this step was indispensable. Finally, the process of rounding off corners and grounding down the surface of the bag were the most time-consuming process. However, they are worthy of recalling, since they are marvelous works.

the Handbag It is a fashionable way for you to handle your daily life, including mobile phone, purse, wallet, and easy card. Whatever you need while you are taking a short walk is included. A strap of leather softens the wood material. It also provides a good texture. The shape of the wood shell is designed to make it handy, and that makes it even more convenient when you carry it.
the Briefcase A humorous way to light up your working Monday blue. It packs up not only important files and laptop, but your mobile phone, headset, and powerbank. Plus, in the front part of the briefcase, it is covered with a rounded-square shell. The design of the briefcase is separated into two segments, which are wood and leather. The bottom of the wood provides anti-collision function for items inside the case, whereas the leather part provides a smoother texture and tenderness to lift the briefcase up.

the Backbag A brand new way to pack up your daily life, carrying your mobile phone, headset, and powerbank. What's more, in the front part of the backpack, equipped with a clever fluid shell. The main container is on the side of where the straps are, providing a private place for you to put valuable belongings such as laptops and wallets.
The memorability is the vital step we aim to achieve, what will remain the same when we leave?

the Rebranding The Lego company may be on the way to redefine themselves, but the commercial market in Asia is not positive. The strategy of Future Lab and Robotic field has its pros and cons, but we are aware of the living space, more specifically, our home. To seize the oppor tunity of changing the relationship between company and customers, the trend of ''maker'' is expected to increase. With the help from the social media network and ourselves base community, the dream of a co-creation concept is possible to be fulfilled. The LIVING LABORATORY is set up for the creative research, a flatform included open-resource and innovation process from public to private. 21

“ We never buy products that are not finished yet.
LIVING LABORATORY LIVING LABORATORY is a co-creation project between the Lego enterprise and customers, and it's a product research design in the living-house area. We expect not only for the material exploration, but the evaluation of the creative ideas. Nowadays, living products have shown their possibilities. We help users to think about the single element in their life. The scener y in our house will not remain the same, therefore, we provide a concept for them to change the atmosphere of the living room, and an experiment to participate. Lego advocates customers to build up models out of their creativity. In this project, we move on the ambition to the living room. When customer purchase the product from retail stores, they will get semi-manufactured product such as a pack of cement or a standardized bamboo part. Continuing innovate process to the next level and targeting on consumer behavior. 22

Bamboo & Cement

The bamboo material is common in Asian countries. In ancient society, people used bamboo to build up houses and household products as well. The bamboos' compressive strength is better than woods' and bricks' or even concrete's. We choose to mix bamboo with cement, w h i c h a re n a t u r a l e l e m e n t s with warm solid materials. The meaning of the exploration is to reflect the mental conflict inside our thoughts, and the process of this project is far more meaningful and educational than we expect.

the Process We use the Taiwan native bamboo ''Phyllostachys edulis''(or tortoise-shell bamboo). After being light polished, bamboos are ready for the cement filling. The most crazy and innovative part of the project is the balloon. People take advantage of creative balloon to shape form out of their ideas. Therefore, we use balloon to fill the cement, with the diversity of its possibilties, we are looking forward to achieve the unexpected form. We put bamboo and cement together, which is the same as the LEGO's combination work. With the help of drilling machine, we cut off the edge from the bamboo. And we curve it into round-smooth shape afterwards. Form follows function. Plus, we aim to make the product useful and handy. From candlestick to newspaper rack, the variety of the living-space products we create are just to name a few.

Thoughts I am eager for the interesting material discovery. It took us nearly two months to achieve this job. From the moment we started to find the Taiwanese bamboo until we make sure that cement did work well with the bamboo. In 2017, Su and I finished the WouldBag series. We accomplished this i m po ssi bl e t ask i n j u st t wo m o nt hs. M o re o ve r, we al so made it different from others. This time, our goal is to explore the living space quality. With the new idea and aesthetic, the Living Laboratory is the answer. â–Ş this page, the natural bamboo texture.

Engage and joy Based on the customer purchase journey and participation in the LIVING LABORATORY, the whole new idea is planned for the public to join the process of happiness that we create for everyone. After the project, the spirit still live on. In August 2018, I went to an educational tour in rural area of Taiwan with PLG team. It was the first time that the design subject has been delivered to the kids. I chose to let the secondar y school kids do the cement product, combined with the daily necessities like cups, bowls, gloves and balloons. For me, the LIVING LABORATORY's experiment will never end.

Core value The most important value of this project is to create a warm technological product. I found out that the public over rely on the technology, a cold hard tech. However, the question is, can we live without it? I think the answer is obvious. In this case, its vital to change the imagination of the appearance of technological product design. The world needs more warm design instead of cold and heartless electronic devices.

the Working Field The main target for City Forest is the working area. People spend around one-third of their time in office, and t h a t 's a b i g d e a l . N o w a d a y s , t h e technological products are seamlessly integrating into our lives. We choose to welcome the innovative products and not to face the problems left behind. Facing tons of electronic devices is making our lives deadly dull. Wires which are from computers, monitors, speakers, and even charging gadgets tangled up together. To take a sigh of relief from the stressful working atmosphere, we need a solution.

Thoughts This finished display product is the best example of the high-tech 3D printer (SLS printed); the free form surface, the thinnest part of nine millimeter, the access of detachable parts. Although the SLS printed may not be the best answer of the industrial design's mass production requirement, but we can root for the possible difficulties in the printing process. This is not a traditional way, but a new option for exploring new methods. As for the birth of the City Forest, the free form surface is built by the T-Spline with Rhinoceros . Scale and specifications are all set up that precise enough for the production.

Gesture & user cognitive Research for the users' need and analyse the data is to fulfill the customer demand and the public awareness. The gesture is overly important when we have a smartwatch on hand. Our survey of smartwatch gesture and cognition conducted six questions, there are around sixty people participate in this activity. The result and detail information of the six questions are showed on the right page.
Interview with users After the first stage of the design key point definition, we intend to learn the user cognition and gesture habits by inter view with seven people in person. There are four original watches users and three smar t watches users participated in this interview.

the Watch _ PRECISION Instead of creating a traditional timepiece, we chose to take part in the field of smart wearables. Not only provides health care and fitness function, but the briefcase mode is perfectly suits for the businessmen (women). Customers ask for one thing more than just on-time, precision is our most indispencible goal. Eternal legacy on trend, precision processing on hand. The chronograph-like watch face is the most symbolic appearence of precision. the Space Age period The design background started at the space age period. During the 1940s, two of the biggest countries in the world, which were the United States and the Soviet Union started a serious competition on space technologies and exploration. It was a boom of culture and the public imagination. It was not until mid-1960s that dramatic design culture, such as space age, atomic age, and googie architectural style popped up. It caught people's eyes with streamed-line, specific colors like metallic and bright colors, curved or rounded form. Later on, the era of space age outshined the normal houseware products and even walked on the fashion catwalk. This is the space age, a time when people dare to dream about their future and unknowned universe.

Explore more #Keep Asking What is Next Back to the 60s, people boldly thought of what our life would be like in the millennium; How far could we acheive and progress in the technology? Approximately after four decades, We mankind are under a completely different era, but our curiosity and imagination cannot maintain as we did forty years ago. Our plant is covered with a gigantic net consisted of industr y, technology, political power, and desire. We ponder on our future when we are sober. We keep asking ourselves about the pathway to our destination, our goals, and what do we really care about, but most importantly, the genre of design that we pursue.

the Epilogue The six projects included material exploration and product design is the best present of my current academic practices. In the past three years, design is the most challenging vocabulary. To create a memorability product and encourage people take part in the core value of the idea, I tried several ways to progress on my design ability. Most of my projects are collaborated with another artist or designer (or my classmate); to plan a wonderful experiment with these excellent people is an indispensable step. For me, the biggest harvest is that everyone has different perspective of this world. What we can do is take a guess or define the problem from the methods of design, but looking through other people’s eyes is a completely contrary way. I learned a lot from my teammates, the joint project shows the vital element of design: communication and comprehension. Material exploration is one of my favorite territory, when we talk about a product, there must be something that is special enough to be outstanding. In the future, it will be the most exciting pursuit that I figure out the designing method of my product in the material science territory. Would Bag aims to achieve the imagination and creativity of an idea, which we seldom think of a bag would make out of wood. Living Laboratory challenges the original business model of the Lego company, rebrand it with a delighting and engaging experiment in our living room with customers is also important. For me, product design is not only meeting the mass production standard, but also expressing an aesthetic opinion from ones point of view. City Forest is the most aesthetic and functional balanced product; people need warm living design instead of cold heartless electronic devices. Precision by Pal is targeted on businessmen and women; a customized product for them to deal with the daily busy routine. Space Tripper I is a future envisioning virtual reality headset that strongly evoked public awareness of the brave and fearless curiosity, with the reflection of the unique Space age. The Teller is a 3D computer aid software figure, combining tech and function into one form. October 2018, Rio Chen.
