For more than six decades, the Ripon College Baseball program has been driven by a pursuit of excellence. Excellence on the field of play, and excellence in the world both during an athlete’s time on campus and their life long after they leave Ripon College to follow their dreams.
On the field, no program in Midwest Conference history has excelled more than the Red Hawks. The program currently sits as the winningest program in history with 21 Midwest Conference championships. Those titles have been supplemented by 12 NCAA Division-III Regional Tournament appearances, 15 MWC Player of the Year selections, 11 MWC Pitcher of the Year honorees, 10 MWC Coach of the Year winners, and hundreds of individual honors for players at the Conference, Regional, and National level.
Off the field and in life, Ripon College Baseball players have succeeded at levels that rival even the program’s championship accomplishments. We believe that the time a player spends within our program is a key developmental stage of their life–a time where what they learn can set them up for true success in all walks of life long after their graduation from Ripon College. Focusing on that development is daily part of how our program operates.
Former Red Hawks have gone on successful careers in a variety of industries, followed their dreams around the world and built lives filled with loving relationships with both family and friends. And most importantly, they’ve remained bonded together with their Red Hawks teammates as our program boasts some of the highest alumni involvement in Ripon’s athletic department.
Red Hawks Baseball is not about teaching young men to play a game. It’s about helping them succeed in life. And no program does it better.
All members of the Red Hawks Baseball program are expected to hold themselves to the highest of standards. We expect each member to consistently be a great:
STUDENT
Place value on and excel in the classroom just like on the field.
FAMILY MEMBER
Appreciate those who care about you. Care for them in return.
FRIEND
Value relationships with those around you. Earn their trust and respect.
CITIZEN
Apply what you learn here to excel in all areas for the rest of your life.
TEAMMATE
Understand the importance and value of this team as a single group rather than individuals. Do the work, set a high standard and encourage others to do the same.
On May 21, 2012, the Ripon College athletic department announced Eric Cruise as its 14th head baseball coach in school history. He spent the previous 11 years as an assistant coach for the Red Hawks, with seven as the team’s associate head coach. During the course of his head coaching career, he has compiled a career record of 156-187, which marks the third-highest win total in Ripon College baseball history, behind two Ripon Athletics Hall of Famers - Gordie and Bob Gillespie.
Cruise couldn’t have had a much better start as a head coach, as he was named Midwest Conference North Division Coach of the Year in each of his first two seasons. Cruise led the Red Hawks to at least 24 wins in each of his first three seasons, finishing first in the MWC North Division each year. The Red Hawks have gone 92-69 in conference games during Cruise’s tenure as head coach, while posting a home record of 56-46.
The 2019 season saw Cruise lead the Red Hawks to their first MWC Tournament appearance in four years, advancing to the MWC Championship Game. They finished that year with a 24-18 record, while setting a school record for saves (10), and ranking in the top 10 in school history in striketouts (267), hits (441), runs (272), doubles (73), and stolen bases (51). That season also featured the team winning 14 of 16 games mid-way through the season, which included an eight-game winning streak, their longest in four seasons.
In 2015, Ripon won their 21st MWC Championship in program history, advancing to the NCAA Midwest Regional in La Crosse, Wis. In their first game of that Regional, the Red Hawks defeated defending national champion and third-ranked UW-Whitewater. In that season, Cruise coached Michael Polcyn and Marshall Zahn to their second consecutive MWC North Player and Pitcher of the Year awards, respectively. Polcyn was also named AllAmerican Honorable Mention and went on to sign an undrafted free agent deal with a St. Louis Cardinals minor league affiliate.
In 2014, Cruise coached the Red Hawks to a 14-2 conference record and a first place finish in the MWC North Division. He also oversaw MWC North Player of the Year (Michael Polcyn) and MWC North Pitcher of the Year (Marshall Zahn). Polcyn also earned Central Region Player of the Year and AllAmerican First Team honors.
The 2013 season, Cruise’s first as a collegiate head coach, was a rousing success. He led the program to its 20th MWC Championship and 11th appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament, as the Red Hawks finished 14-2 in the MWC and in first place in the MWC North Division.
Prior to his time at Ripon College, Cruise spent two years managing the Oshkosh Giants in a semi-pro league. He also spent one year as an assistant varsity coach at Oshkosh West High School. In 2001, Cruise served as a media relations intern with the Chicago Cubs.
Cruise earned his bachelors degree in Mathematics Statistics from UW-Oshkosh in 2002 and received his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from UWOshkosh in 2008.
A native of Oregon, Wis., Cruise graduated from Oregon High School in 1995. While in high school, Cruise earned two letters each in football and baseball. As a middle infielder, Cruise received the Jack Statz award as a senior, which is given to the senior that shows the most commitment to the program with hard work and dedication.
Cruise currently resides in Neenah.
Phil Pupillo is in his sixth season as an assistant coach for the Ripon College baseball team.
Pupillo comes to Ripon from Judson University, where he served as a Graduate Assistant Baseball Coach for two years, helping the team win a pair of regular season conference championships. At Judson, Pupillo was the head catching coach, creating and implementing daily practice plans for the catchers, while also instituting an individualized throwing and arm care program for all pitchers, in addition to scouting and recruiting duties.
Pupillo has also worked for Player’s Choice Academy in Algonquin, Ill., Pro Player Consultants in McHenry, Ill., Elite Baseball Academy in Holmen, Wis., Future Swings in Marion, Ill., serving as a catching and hitting instructor at each location. He also served as an assistant coach for the Joliet Admirals of the Midwest Collegiate League in Joliet, Ill.
An Academic All-American in 2012, Pupillo earned his Associate of Arts degree from John A. Logan College in 2012. He went on to receive a B.S. in Mathematics from Viterbo University in 2015, before obtaining his MBA from Judson in 2017.
As a player, Pupillo was a part of one conference championship and two conference tournament championships at John A. Logan College. He was also a part of Viterbo’s 2014 conference championship and conference tournament championship.
Derek Loomans is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Ripon College baseball team.
A native of Brandon, Wis., Loomans attended Waupun High School. He went on to pitch at Lakeland College, where he graduated in 2014 with a degree in Marketing.
While at Lakeland, Loomans compiled an 11-13 record with a cumulative Earned Run Average of 4.76. He also produced 10 complete games and four shutouts, while striking out 93 batters in 170 innings. After his collegiate career was finished, Loomans coached high school baseball at both Madison East and Sheboygan South. He also became the manager for the Sheboygan A’s, an amateur summer baseball team, from 2015-19. While at the helm of the A’s, Loomans led the team to a 161-1082 record in his five seasons, which is the fourth-most wins by a manager in team history. He helped the A’s go 88-57 in the Wisconsin State League with three second-place finishes, while going 56-34 in the Northeastern Wisconsin League with three second place finishes and twice finishing in third place. With Loomans as manager, the A’s won the 2018 Wisconsin Amateur Baseball Classic tournament.

Upon returning to Wisconsin, Lopez was named the head coach at Nekoosa High School for three years leading the school to a record of 15-17.
Lopez currently resides in Nekoosa, Wis. with his wife, Hannah, and their two children.

After his collegiate career was finished, Sottile became the field manager for the Green Bay Blue Ribbons, an amateur summer baseball team in the Wisconsin State League, where he has served for the last two years. During his first season as head coach, Sottile led the Ribbons to a 23-27 record.
Brice Swick is in his second season as an Assistant Baseball Coach at Ripon College, after a tremendous career for the Red Hawks where he served as the ace of the pitching staff.
An All-Region second Team and First Team All-Conference selection as a senior, Swick holds the school record for single game strikeouts, accomplishing that feat against Lawrence University during the 2019 season. He also has the third-highest single season strikeout total in program history, punching out 73 batters in that same season.
During his career at Ripon, Swick compiled a cumulative record of 11-12, to go along with an Earned Run Average of 4.52. He recorded 138 strikeouts in 167.1 innings of work, while also recording four complete games and one save. Swick appeared in 36 games for the Red Hawks, making 28 starts. He also played in the field on occasion, finishing his career with a .229 batting average, including four doubles, seven RBI, 10 runs scored, and one stolen base.
Jeffrey Halter is in his 23rd season of coaching and his first season as an assistant coach for the Ripon College baseball team.
Halter comes to Ripon from Judson University, where he served as an Assistant Baseball Coach for the 2021-2022 season, helping the team win a CCAC tournament championship appearance and birth into NAIA National Tournament. Prior to coming to Ripon, Zemke served as the head athletic performance coach at fellow Midwest Conference school Lawrence University. Prior to that, he was the assistant athletic performance coach at University of Vermont. Zemke’s hire by Ripon Medical Center, a member of Agnesian HealthCare, demonstrates a strong commitment to providing resources to enhance athletic performances through quality preparation, planning and educational guidance.
Injury prevention, efficient movement education, and proper lifting techniques are the core concentrations of each training session and throughout our pre-season, in-season, post-season and off-season planning.
Zemke plans to relocate to Ripon in the near future. He enjoys spending time with family and friends, hunting, fishing and being outdoors.
Named for longtime friend and benefactor of Ripon College, Patricia Parker Francis, Francis Field is home to the Red Hawks baseball team, which has won 21 conference championships, including an amazing championship run in which they won the conference title in eight out of 10 years from 1998-2007 and another run that saw them win four conference championships in six years from 2010-15.
The field was newly renovated in October of 2006, which included a new concession stand, new pressbox, brand new fencing, and additional seating. The capacity at Francis Field is now approximately 350, with extra space to sit around the fence.
Francis Field is located to the South of Willmore Center. Parking is available in the parking lots in front and to the west of Willmore. The field can be accessed by walking around or through the building.

The 2022 season saw the Red Hawks get back into familiar territory... the post-season. The Red Hawks returned to the MWC Tournament for the first time since 2019. The team finished with a 20-23 overall record and a 13-11 mark in the Midwest Conference, earning them 3rd place in the standings. The season saw its ups and downs but the team battled day in and day out. Conference highlights include series sweeps against Monmouth and Knox, and series victories against Illinois College and Cornell. The non-conference slate brought a winning record on our annual spring trip, a big end-of-season doubleheader sweep of Marian and also included exciting, late-inning losses to nationally ranked NorthCentral and UW Stout.
The season came to a conclusion in Appleton at the Midwest Conference Tournament. The Red Hawks opening game saw an offensive explosion against the University of Chicago. Both teams brought their “A” at the plate but in the end, Chicago won on a walkoff homerun to send the Red Hawks to the loser’s bracket. In their elimination game against Illinois College, pitching won the day as the Hawks moved on to day 2 of the tournament with a 10-2 victory. Day 2 of the tournament brought a rematch with Chicago and saw the Hawks season come to an end with a 9-4 loss to the Maroons.
Hopes of a 22nd Midwest Conference Championship for the program are on the horizon. The Hawks bring a solid mix of returning experience along with incoming talent that should see them competing again for the MWC post-season. Should that run for number 22 happen, it would be Ripon’s 13th MWC championship in the last 27 years.
With the second largest roster in program history, the Ripon College Baseball team consists of 45 players for the 2023 season. That will give the team plenty of options and firepower to compete with the best teams in the Midwest Conference. The Red Hawks return 28 players from last year’s squad.
The Red Hawks have several big names returning in 2023. Cormac Madigan, Cam Stampfl, and Nick Tenny highlight the top offensive returners. Madigan and Stampfl are both coming off a 2022 season that saw them garner All-MWC honors and Nick Tenny was an everyday starter for the team last year.
On the pitching side, returners such as Brock Warren, Mitchell Lukasik, Brock Turkington, and Hunter Thompson will help lead the staff. Lukasik was named to the All-MWC team in 2022. He led the team in innings (64.2) and wins (6) a year ago. Warren was third on the team in innings in 2022 (58.2) and let the team in strikeouts (51). Turkington shared the team lead in appearances with 14 and Thompson returns from an injury after having much success in his 2021 campaign.
