Brisbane Airport International Terminal Northern Concourse Expansion

CLIENT

Brisbane Airport Corporation Pty Ltd MEDIA

Watercolour and Mixed Media printed on vinyl. DE TAIL S

An artwork installation within public areas of the airport terminal on level 3 of the new departures concourse close to two new departure gates. The wall space measures 90 metres long and 4.6 metres high The work is intended to be in close proximity to the travelling public and it must be resilient, maintainable and replaceable. The space is described as predominantly light in colour with off white floor tiling and white walls with accents of spotted gum timber panelling to highlight departure gate locations and to reflect the Queensland theme that has been employed closer to the terminal central retail and processing area.

THE PROPOSAL

FRO M THE V ERY S TA RT, I LOV ED WH AT I SAW.

From the moment I viewed the brief and saw the space at a visit to the construction site at the airport, I fell in love with the concept of the project. My concept developed based on my travel experience at the Brisbane International Airport. My husband and I were returning from an overseas trip, we were tired from 2 days of travel including an 8 hour layover at Singapore Changi Airport and overnight flight back. We followed procedure through customs in an automaton state and then, as we followed our driver to the car, we stepped outside. The smell of the Australian gum trees overwhelmed me and I will never forget that moment of smelling the outside air.

IMAGE 1

My proposal is based on that personal experience and I want visitors leaving from Brisbane Airport to their overseas destinations to take with them a part of the uniqueness of our Brisbane and South East Queensland landscape.

IMAGE 2

I will show how the ideas fit into the space provided for the project with mockups of the space and sketches of my proposal and a statement of how they fit with the proposed space. CONCEPT

I am a graphic designer and watercolour artist. My work captures organic forms from the Australian landscape. My design is based on my experience of coming back to Australia from an overseas trip and experiencing the strong scent of the eucalyptus infused air when first stepping outside.

Concept

7

THE OFFERINGS

My concept for the airport mural is to give a lasting impression of our landscape to the departing visitors. The mural artwork is a contemporary application of watercolour techniques reflecting the varied landscapes from gum nuts and gum leaves to the gum trees that surround us. By immersing myself into this Australian landscape I am able to access the naturally occurring pigments and forms and to bring them to reality as paintings.

IMAGE 1

I will create a series of paintings that will be photographed and enlarged at a high resolution and printed on vinyl. The modularity of a series of paintings will allow the work to be flexible. The vinyl will be attached directly onto the wall in sections. This strategy will make the work maintainable and replaceable to take care of any damage at a later date.

IMAGE 2

The focal point of the paintings will be directly opposite the waiting lounges of the departure gates, the distance from which provides an ideal and proportionate viewing platform for the artwork. The outer areas are inspired from the muted greys and blues of the bark of the Australian ghost gum tree. Further, the colour scheme is in keeping with the naturally diffused light of the skylight and the additional light reflected from the cream floor. It also takes into account that the major traffic times will be in the early morning which in my opinion require a more diffused theme. In addition, the artwork is designed to allow flexibility for the placement of vending machines, doorways and other fixtures and the proposed travelator without undue interference to the work. The work is intended to allow functionality in the operations of the airport.
