CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY SELECTED WORK ANA RITA FERNANDES
2019
This compilation of contemporary photography is aiming to share my artistic work, divided into the different series or narratives in which the selected material is immersed in. The series explore different faces and places, in different countries, contexts and cultures. I consider that photography works as a language and helps us expand our visual vocabulary, which can be read all over the world, despite mother tongue and culture differences in the different countries. I believe that we, as human beings and artists, have the power to change societies and their vision of the world, by developing new practices, methodologies, and innovative media work, as aimed with this photography work. Project work “(RE) connecting with nature” On an attempt to (re)connect with nature, Sónia Matos, circus artist, aims to find a natural setting that inspires her and her body to work on contemporary art and movement.
walking toes
From the narrative “(re) connecting with nature” Fujifilm xt20 September 2018
Her toes are the first and most important part of the body to feel the ground that she steps on, in seek of a trustworthy upside down balance.
Perceptions
From the narrative “(re) connecting with nature Fujifilm xt20 September 2018
By palpating the ground and experimenting balance in different positions, she is ready to try and feel her weight pushing from a different direction.
FINDING BALANCE
From the narrative “(re) connecting with nature Fujifilm xt20 September 2018
In the pursue of what sets her soul on fire, she is fearless and finally is able to connect to nature, through the strength and balance that her mind and body are able to offer. She is upside down and feeling like she can hold the whole planet at the back of her hands.
Connecting with nature
From the narrative “(re) connecting with nature Fujifilm xt20 September 2018
Once stability takes charge, Sónia can work on art and movement and extend her body and mind limits while connected to nature. Everything aligns with her wishes.

Project work for documentary photography (ICP) The manifestation was a protest against the verdict of Nasrin Sotoudeh, who has been arrested in 2010 in Iran, demanding that she should be released immediately. Nasrin Sotoudeh is an iranian human rights lawer in Iran and have represented the imprisioned opposition activits and politicians. Her clients included journalists, the head of the opposite group and also a women who was arrested for appearing in public without a hijab, which is considered to be a punishable offence in Iran.

Project work “Circus life - Behind the scenes” The narrative on Jakobe aims to tell about the life of a circus artist. How does she develop her acts? How does she get creative? How does she make experiments? What happens when it is late in the day and she still have to keep trying?
Jakobe is a 24 year old lady from Belgium. After finishing her degree as a circus artist in Stockholm she has been performing at a burlesque bar and also developing her own show. It is not easy to get a steady position as a circus artist, one must work hard and be creative all the time.

At late nights in DOCH (Dans och cirkushögskolan), there are always students and artists left, who work further on their acts. This way they can have a more quiet environment and take the chance to help each other when being creative together.

By spreading all different costumes in front of her and looking at them, Jakobe gets inspired to try out new tricks and movements. “Wearing” different characters all the time is what she likes to do, and aims to be more entertaining rather than perfectionist.
