Back by popular demand to Riverbank Arts Centre, Silken Thomas Players are also storming their way back onto the Peacock stage this July with one of the greatest plays of our time. Silken Thomas Players are storming their way back onto the Peacock stage this July with one of the greatest plays of our time. On St. George’s Day, the morning of the local fair, Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron is a wanted man. The council officials want to serve him an eviction notice, his son wants to be taken to the fair, an evil father wants to give him a serious kicking and a motley crew of mates want his ample supply of drugs and alcohol. A comic, contemporary vision of rural life in England’s green and pleasant land, Jez Butterworth’s epic new play, Jerusalem is wildly original. In part a lament about the erosion of country life and in part a rebuff to the antiseptic modern world, it features a landmark ensemble cast, so charismatic, so mercurial, so complete, that it doesn’t look like acting. . sATuRdAy July 7Th

This intimate collection of home recordings received rave reviews and won a legion of admirers including David Bowie, Graham Linehan and the great Bob Harris (old Grey Whistle Test). For this one-off tour, Kitt will be accompanied by his brother Robbie who memorably featured on the album aged just 10 at the time, but who is now an accomplished musician in his own right. In addition to performing Small Moments in its entirety, they will perform a second set of material spanning Kitt’s ten-year career and some brand new songs. “There’s an otherness at work here, an ability to subvert prettiness and a knack for bending a melody that announces a special talent…” Mojo

MARCh AwAy My BROThERs wRITTEN ANd pERFORMEd By BRENdAN MACQuAIlE Time Tbc price T15/ T12 ‘March Away My Brothers’ is a one man show taken from the book of the same name by Brendan MacQuaile; it follows the journey of a young Irish lad, Lawrence Kelly from Bridgefoot Street in Dublin’s Liberties to the Christmas Truce in 1914, somewhere near the Messines ridge in Flanders where many Irish fought and died during the course of this terrible conflagration. But Larry’s story is not one of hell and damnation; let’s face it, he is already dead, blown to bits at the now infamous Passchendaele and remembered only as an inscription on the Menin Gate. Larry looks back with the excitement of the early call to arms still palpable, the Guinness Pals brigade forming after Kitcheners call to arms and the sheer chaos and melee of new troops arriving in France, gung ho, ready to serve the crown, and do their bit before it was ‘Over by Christmas’. ‘What a great show, we enjoyed ourselves immensely’ Joe Duffy, RTE.

Now in his eighties, the legendary New York Times fashion photographer does not stop for a moment. Bill Cunningham’s column has served as a central reference for the fashion world of the Big Apple. The diligent photographer is everywhere: he picks up trends from street fashion in real time like a war photographer; at charity events of New York’s elite – his subjects are the ones to chase him. As Vogue editor Anna Winter attests: “We all dress for Bill”. Chronicling his successful career, Richard Press’s film also reveals that the man behind the camera lives an extremely modest life: he wears drab colors, rides a simple bicycle through the streets of Manhattan and lives in a small studio dedicated to files of his work.

Back by Popular Demand, Wonderland invites 7-12 year olds into its colourful world of drama and dance, directing and playwriting, stage design and lighting, music and sound art, comedy and clowning, for a week-long camp culminating in a fabulous showcase for friends and family. Wonderland’s workshops uniquely combine a stage school with the work of a professional theatre company and each camp takes place on the stage of the theatre. Every workshop leader is a member of Wonderland’s cast or production team. Every Wonderland Workshop’s aim is to make friends, to perform, to learn lots too, but most importantly to encourage each young performer to grow and develop through the performing arts - and just as importantly for us all to have the best of fun together. This summer’s special day is dedicated to creating music and sound art, in line with Wonderland’s two audio ‘headphones’ shows “Dubliners” and “Sylvia’s Quest” of 2012.

Sam’s folksong albums have received wide acclaim and have pulled many a soul back from the brink... his itinerant wanderings have taken him to far-off lands... and his solo performances have taken on a life and tenor of their own. Sam’s drawn comics and enigmatic home-made videos (the “self-inflicted field recordings” resulting from these internal and external journeys) have resulted in exhibitions at the Tony Shafrazi and Audio Visual Arts galleries in New York City, and the Gallery Kuhturm in Leipzig. His audio-visual show/comics lecture “Home Alone Inside My Head” was premiered at NYC’s The Kitchen in November 2010. Sam, currently London-based, is finishing work on a new album and performing a series of AV shows throughout Europe this fall. After reading a bunch of Henry James, Sam is now hard at work writing his own “pretend novel,” called King Speechy, to be released by Penguin Classics in 2051 - u feel me? Dir: Morten Tyldum / Norway / 2011 / 101 mins / Cert: 16 Starring: Aksel Hennie, Synnøve Macody Lund, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Language: Norwegian What’s the worst thing that can happen to a movie character? Shot, stabbed, beaten, tortured? How about exiled, chased, impaled, savaged by a pitbull, involved in a tractor crash, chucked off a cliff and forced to hide in 6 feet of human excrement? Luckily, it couldnít happen to a more deserving guy. Tyldum’s deliriously entertaining thriller, stems from a simple but hugely satisfying idea: serve up an eminently hissable central character, in this case part-time art thief and full-time corporate douchebag Roger, then sit back and smile as he tangles with the wrong folks and is subjected to the most humiliating indignities the smart, streamlined script can invent. The plot moves like a rocket, the despicable characters are marvellously sketched and it’s always deliriously entertaining. Anyone tired of the surly, leather-jacketed seriousness of the ‘Millennium’ trilogy and looking for more spark and spice in their Scandinavian crime sagas need seek no further. Pure joy!

Dir: Phillippe Falardeau / Canada / 2011 / 94 mins / Cert: 12A/ Language: French Starring: Mohamed Fellag, Sophie Nélisse, Émilien Néron, Brigitte Poupart, Danielle Proulx There are some sights a child was never meant to see. When a group of Montreal students find their beloved teacher hanging from the ceiling of their elementary school classroom, the shock of the incident is traumatizing. Her replacement, Algerian refugee Bachir Lazhar, now has the doubly difficult task of reaching his distraught students while securing his own asylum from past tragedies in his homeland. Writer-director Phillipe Falardeau tackles these topics with a delicate touch, bringing wit and warmth to the classroom scenes and granting the heavier material an appropriate gravity. It’s not often that you see elementary school and global politics sharing a screen, but Monsieur Lazhar makes the fit an entirely natural one, as Bachir and his students come to terms with loss, guilt, and other issues that life has prematurely thrown at them. It’s an inspiring character study that earns every one of its heart-warming moments the hard way – through insight, empathy and eloquence. Nominated - Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award 2012

To celebrate the closing weekend of Newbridge 200, Anúna will perform at St Conleth’s Church, Newbridge. The concert is a true “show”, a combination of movement, elegant costume, candles and ethereal and haunting music sung in a unique way. Dispelling any pre-conceived ideas about Irish music and choral music performance, Anùna has earned a justified reputation for the quality of the singers’ natural voices. With relaxed introductions by the director and other singers, Anúna’s style of presentation allows anyone of any musical persuasion to appreciate their performance despite the esoteric nature of their material. Closely associated with the Riverdance phenomenon from 1994 until 1996, giving the first performance of the piece at the Eurovision Song Contest 1994. Anúna sang the opening choral section entitled “Cloudsong”. They won an Irish National Entertainment Award for Classical music in 1994, and were nominated for a Classical Brit Award in 2000. The group have recorded ten albums and been signed to many major record labels. Riverbank Arts Centre & Newbridge 200 presents Anùna for one very special night of music and song at the impressive location of St Conleth’s Church, Newbridge. Time 8pm price 16 Dir: Terry McMahon / 2010 / Ireland / 91 mins / Cert: 16 / Language: English Starring: Emmet Scanlan, Johnny Elliott, Leigh Arnold, Valeria Bandino When Charlie knocks down a working class girl in a hit-and-run, he uses a deck of playing cards to determine his fate. Erudite, ruling-class egotist, Charlie Barnum’s smoke-and-mirror articulations conceal a prejudiced, over-educated sociopath who refuses to be bound by the restrictions of morality, law or even reality. Meet Charlie Casanova. You don’t know him… but he already hates you. It’s gritty, it’s grimy, it’s grey, and at times it leaves you feeling like you are sitting in an anonymous room with an annoying fluorescent strip-light flickering overhead. So be warned: don’t expect a light-hearted popcorn romp. Instead, be prepared to grimace, question and put your Ben & Jerry’s down in disgust.

What would you choose to do? Paint or draw? Take photographs or collect memorabilia? Would it be humorous, thought-provoking, boring or just plain weird? Would you enjoy working alongside your parents, children or siblings? This summer, several families will have the opportunity to do just that, as part of a unique creative project facilitated by artist Sadie Cramer. The one thing all these families have in common is that they each have first hand experience with Down Syndrome. Does that automatically mean there are similarities between them or are the family groups and situations so distinct that they remain entirely separate from each other? The exhibition is entitled ‘Invisible Thread’; it suspends, travels, unravels but does it link? You are invited to visit the Children’s Gallery during September and see whether it does. In association with Kildare’s branch of Down Syndrome Ireland, a number of families were chosen to work with Sadie Cramer this exhibition is a result of a series of workshops that have taken place over a 6 weeks period. Pieces on display have been produced as part of this series of workshops, while other pieces were produced by Sadie herself in response to the families that participated in the workshops.
