January Summer Season at Riverbank Arts Centre May to August 2014 Hello there, This year seems to be flying by, and as we bound through 2014, the Summer season brings an opportunity to slow things down, take a breath and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. This Summer at Riverbank, we have plenty of events to brighten & lighten the coming months, hail, rain or shine. The theatre programme kicks off with Seamus O’Rourke’s inimitable reflection of the quirks and traits of rural Irish life in Dig, Pat McGrath brings us into the world of escapism, model-making & more with the touching play Small Plastic Wars. Pop on your dancing shoes and enjoy the romance of Swing with Janet Moran and Steve Blount, presented by Fishamble. Some legends appear on stage this season with DYAD Production’s The Unremarkable Death of Marilyn Monroe while Lambo humourously examines the ‘scandal’ of Gerry Ryan’s purported killing of a Lamb for the Gay Byrne show in 1987. The music programme sees the Chieftain’s Kevin Coneff join forces with whistle player Mary Bergin and guitar player extraordinaire Tim Edey (under the name BEC) for a very special night in May. Mick Flannery, The Unusual History of Ether, The Old Dance School and the superb Jack L keep the tunes pumping throughout Summer, while David McSavage will put a smile on your face. For families and school audiences, we have some very special treats in store—not least of which is the presentation of Dutch theatre company Het Filiaal’s inspiring show The Secret of Q. Riverbank is part of ShortWorks – a network of 4 venues dedicated to presenting the highest quality arts experiences for children- and is proud to have an opportunity to present this international work. The show will be presented three times for schools with one evening show for a family audience- don’t miss it. We are also delighted to welcome Branar Theatre back to the venue with a beautiful new show Bláth- The Flower. Designed by the artist Maeve Clancy, a Riverbank favourite, with music by Colm Mac Con Iomaire of The Frames, Bláth invites children to an enchanting world made entirely of paper. To add to the Summer vibe, we are delighted to present Knee Deep—an enthralling show filled with acrobatic, traditional and contemporary circus techniques from Australian company Casus – an awe inspiring experience. And to cap it all off, wind down with A Wine Goose Chase – a show about wine, with a glass of wine in hand, it’s the perfect way to pass a Summer evening. Enjoy & hope to see you soon..

Seamus O’Rourke has become well known in the theatre world for tackling serious contemporary social issues through humour and some very quirky, but recognisable rural Irish characters. ‘dig’ is no different… In some parts of rural Ireland graves are still dug by friends and neighbours of the deceased and not by professional gravediggers. This play is about that ritual…and about things that never get said between men…men who played sport together, men who would die for one another, men who would do anything for the ‘cause’ and yet keep their real thoughts a secret to the grave. From its beautifully realised setting and lighting to its accurately drawn characters. This is a story so powerful and captivating from its opening words, yet so full of wit and humour throughout. O’Rourke himself revisits one of his finest roles as Big Tom O’Donnell and audiences throughout the country are in for a real treat. Directed & Written by Seamus O’Rourke.

The Unusual History of Ether is the song writing partnership of Irish singer, keyboardist and songwriter Rebecca Collins and Danish jazz guitarist and composer Mikkel Ploug. They played together for the first time at the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2007 and immediately forged a musical connection. However, their own projects kept them busy in the years that followed. When the two finally found time to collaborate in 2011, things happened fast. After a few months of swapping musical ideas online, The Unusual History of Ether was formed, with the addition of bass player Jeppe Skovbakke and drummer Jeppe Gram, and Rebecca relocated to Copenhagen. “an absorbing album that engages the brain, but light enough to keep toes tapping and shoulders shaking.” – Lauren Murphy, The Irish Times.

In October 1942, Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the President, takes a dangerous trip to wartime London, to visit US troops, and see how the British, most importantly the women, are coping. In her last days, as the Cuban Missile Crisis pushes the world to the brink of final catastrophe, Eleanor relives her journey, from bombdamaged Buckingham Palace to midnight factories. She also recalls her life, from unhappy child, to unconventional wife, to becoming, in President Truman's words 'First Lady of the World'. Granted special permission to use Eleanor's writings, Alison Skilbeck's new one-woman show explores the public, and hidden life of one of the most extraordinary women of the 20th century, a woman beset by deep personal insecurities and tragedy, but one who never lost her passionate belief in the strength of the human spirit.

Haas returns the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music. It’s a dream collaboration for Fraser, long regarded as one of Scotland’s premier fiddlers and a proud ambassador for Gaelic culture and traditions. For this tour, they are performing for the first time with the inestimable Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. In a stunning early sequence of metamorphosis, the naked femme fatale dons the attire of her predecessor and goes out on the prowl in a non-descript van, effortlessly procuring not-so gullible lads from the backstreets of Glasgow and local highways and luring them into an unimaginable void. WITh sUPPORT FROM CAsEy BLACK Time price

Mick Flannery was brought up on a farm outside Blarney, Co. Cork. His first real connection to music was watching an unplugged Nirvana covering Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World.” After a sting in a music college in Cork, he travelled to the U.S. where he “wandered around for a time.” While there, he entered the U.S. Songwriting Competition in Nashville, Tennessee and, to his surprise, won two top awards for his compositions. If asked, Mick adamantly refuses to talk about himself. The best you’ll get from him on any given day is, maybe, an admission that he’s a bit “grumpy” and he enjoys a good game of poker. So, if you want to learn a little bit more about Mick Flannery, just kick back and listen to his music because that’s where he actually talks about himself. Mick writes all of his songs (words and music) and plays both piano and guitar. Casey Black A literary lyricist with a gravel growl voice, Casey Black covers the darker part of the Americana psyche. Like Springsteen in delivery, Patty Griffin in mood, Steinbeck in story, Casey intertwines commentary on life-times within an expansive musical landscape.

“Mick Flannery is a singing and songwriting force to be reckoned with.” – Siobhán Long, The Irish Times

The Old Dance School's expansive landscapes of ear-bending contemporary folk music place them as true innovators of the genre. Duelling fiddles, soaring brass crescendos, and irresistible grooves, their live show charts their remarkable journey from ballet school basement jam sessions and cowshed rehearsals, to remote lighthouses, to headline appearances at international festivals. The Old Dance School takes its name from the old Betty Fox School of Ballet in Birmingham, then legendary jam session venue, where the band first formed in 2006. Championed by BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris, the septet's provocative songs and cinematic sound has received plaudits throughout the country, from press and audiences alike, including Songlines Top Of The World 2010, and The Scotsman's Album of the Year.

Four performers explore the boundaries of strength and tenderness. Bodies are pushed and pulled, weighed and tested, probing the limits of both physicality and feeling. As unlikely bonds are forged and space is transcended by thrilling physical feats, we are invited to re-imagine notions of our limitations. Casus features two members of Circa—a huge hit of Brighton Festival 2011. Knee Deep is their first production, a bold, quirky and captivating performance that has blown audiences away throughout Australia and at Edinburgh in 2012. Using traditional and contemporary circus techniques, the intimate show journeys through moments of raw discovery and fleeting relationships as the four artists demonstrate that delicacy need not equate to fragility. Knee Deep is a breath-taking display of humanity and incredible physical skill performed with raw emotion and honesty.
