Welcome to Autumn at Riverbank Arts Centre 2014 Hello there,
This season, we’re delighted to present you with a great range of events for Riverbank Arts Centre’s Autumn programme 2014. Firstly, what a season it’s going to be for family audiences – from young babies right up to teens, there’s a wealth of options to choose from and all at very reasonable prices too. With Branar Theatre’s exciting adaptation of Oliver Jeffers’ The Way Back Home, Paul Curley’s immersive new play called Bake!, Re:play Theatre’s TiNY, a show for babies, and Music Network with The Ark bringing us a brand new family music performance A Most Peculiar Wintry Thing, we hope you’ll be earmarking the calendar dates without delay. That’s before we mention anything about fabulous theatre from across the globe. Riverbank is a member of ShortWorks—a network of four venues committed to presenting the highest quality arts experiences for children. This season, we are proud to present you with Slingsby Theatre’s The Tragical Life of Cheeseboy. Travelling all the way from Australia, don’t miss this outstanding international show during the mid-term break. Music fans have plenty to keep the feet tapping with Jimmy McCarthy, Johnny McEvoy, Johnny Duhan and The Legend of Luke Kelly amongst others taking to the stage. Seamus Begley, Catriona McKay and Chris Stout join forces in September while the incredible fiddle player, and member of The Gloaming, Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh brings up a new show. Those of you who enjoyed Mikel Murfi’s The Man in The Woman’s Shoes will be pleased to hear that Mikel returns this season as director of Nomad Network’s The Far Off Hills – a revival of the classic Lennox Robinson comedy. Tuesdays with Morrie returns to the stage while the ever popular Seamus O’Rouke presents a funny new play Padraig Potts’ Guide to Walking . These and more are on offer for theatre fans. For something a little different, we highly recommend Deep by Ray Scannell. Fresh from a successful run at the Galway International Arts Festival, don’t miss this outstanding performance which plunges us deep into the 80s to an era where acid house and the underground scene emerges before us and you’re left with beats of a generation pulsing through your veins. There’s so much more to mention – a new show from Pat Shortt, our own Kitchen Hero Donal Skehan is back, Dr Mark Rowe teaches us all how to be happy, while a range of exhibitions offers the chance to drop in and enjoy visual arts. Alongside our regular cinema programme, we are delighted to present two new exciting film events – see next page for more details. It’s all go here this season and we hope you’ll join us at Riverbank Arts Centre for many memorable experiences. From the Riverbank Arts Centre Team

We are delighted to have the opportunity to be part of the Films From the Southern Mediterranean programme this season. Now in its third year and funded by the Arts Council, this series selects three films from this area to tour to five arts venues in Ireland: The Bag of Flour, Gett, The Trial of Viviane Amsalem and Ladder to Damascus.

As it traces the story of pop culture, and portrays the political transition of a country from the divisive Bush Jnr. years beyond the “Yes We Can!” promise of Obama’s election victory, Boyhood presents itself as a film of genuine substance and significance, an immediate American classic. Told in expansive and unhurried narrative strokes, the film describes life’s desires and anxieties, as well as the needs and fears of an adolescent – all of which provides a panoramic and diverting picture of American youth today. €3 Coffee & CAke DeAl

The Kildare Artist Notebook project was established by Kildare County Council Arts Service in 2011. Artists in all genres and at all stages of their career were invited to take an A5 moleskine notebook, to use it as they wished and to return it, to become part of a permanent touring collection. To date, over 200 artists from around the world have donated notebooks – sometimes reluctantly as notebooks are often very personal and private. However, seeing the notebooks displayed collectively allows participants to experience how an individual thing becomes greater in the shared experience.http://www.kildarenotebookproject.com/

Where are his parents? How did he become marooned on earth? Gypsies have given him a home, of sorts, but Cheeseboy is tugged this way and that by tides of strange longings and stranger powers. With ingeniously simple lights and mirrors complemented by hightech marvels and set to lush original music by Quincy Grant, The Tragical Life of Cheeseboy will transport you to a fantastic world. Playing a guy called Joe mightn't sound like edge-of-your-seat stuff - indeed, the name implies distinct averageness - but it's the way Cage contains all that fiery energy that makes him a riveting presence in this slow-burning drama. Ex-con Joe (Cage) works as foreman of a group of forestry workers and lives a quiet life alone with his dog. When he meets troubled young boy Gary he reflectively extends the hand of guidance and friendship; however, the price of his well-intentioned intervention proves to be high.

On the 30th of January 1984, it is said that the whole of Dublin grieved the early death of Dubliner legend Luke Kelly who left an indelible mark as the greatest folk artist of the 20th Century. Dublin singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Kavanagh was born and raised on Irish music and has been singing Irish folk songs since he was three years old. He learned to play the piano by ear when he was five and his love and passion for Luke Kelly's music led him to learn to play the 5 string long neck banjo in 2001. When Chris sings, his talents capture the depth and passion of the great man that he was so heavily influenced by.

This exhibition presents an installation of images and sculptural work that explores the contemporary world through the sensuous materiality of natural resources. Informed by stone as the primary raw material for the show, a series of correlations are invited between our urban and rural outer landscapes, and our inner biological landscapes, as we map ourselves into the exhibition environment. In relating concrete to the sea and computers to mountains 'that mineral matter' aims to engage us with a sense of physical familiarity in the midst of an increasingly disconnected material world. Mary-Jo Gilligan is the 2014 Kildare County Council Emerging Visual Artist Exhibition Bursary Award recipient which has enabled her to create this exhibition. In collaboration with the IBHT, the gallery environment will host hot stone massage sessions as embedded events during the exhibition. For further information, please contact Box Office.

Set in the fictional American small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, it tells the story of an average town’s citizens in the early 20th century, through their every-day lives. While the setting is small town America the context is universal. Like most human beings, the characters seem oblivious to the advance of time and their powerlessness to stop it. This is a play that attests to the importance of community and companionship. The major themes of life (birth, love and marriage, and death) are all celebrated in this Pulitzer Prize winning play.

Dir: Richard Donner / 1988 / USA / 101 mins / Cert: PG / Language: English Starring: Bill Murray, Karen Allen, John Forsythe, John Glover, Bob Goldthwait, David Johansen, Carol Kane, Robert Mitchum Frank Cross runs a US TV station which is planning a live adaptation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Frank's childhood wasn't a particularly pleasant one, and so he doesn't really appreciate the Christmas spirit. With the help of the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, Frank realises he must change. Young and old will love this hilarious and touching film, with a sharp quotable script, packed full of great performances by old school actors and newer faces alike. Dickens' super-happy ending works wonderfully here and balances the film. A great Christmas treat for all the family.
