January to March 2015 at Riverbank Arts Centre A Big Welcome to all
It’s that time of year again when we’re counting down the dark days and eagerly awaiting the first hints of spring. What better way to shake off the winter blues than to immerse yourself in some cultural treats. With friends, family or small ones, weekend treats, or mid-week breaks, we trust you’ll find something to suit this season. To ease us into January, Riverbank Arts Centre has teamed up with the First Fortnight Festival to present a double bill of events with a focus on mental health on Jan 14th/15th. Kicking off with a screening of Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank, starring Michael Fassbender & Domhnal Gleeson, the festival then turns to the world of dance with The Shadow that Leans as four dancers explore the human psyche. January also holds a treat for music lovers with the six critically acclaimed trad musicians taking to the stage the Sea Road Sessions on Jan 16th while on Friday 23rd, Grammy nominated vocalist Maura O’Connell is joined by the acclaimed Karen Casey of Solas, Lunasa’s Ed Boyd & Altan’s Martin Tourish for what promises to be a thrilling evening of music. Later in the season we welcome Isla Grant, a classical treat with Vladimir & Anton Jablokov aka Two Brothers, Kildare’s own Inni-K launches her album, and we’re thrilled to present Join Me in the Pines, new music from BellX1’s David Geraghty on Feb 14th. In the world of theatre, we present Donal O’Kelly’s Catalpa, The Man in the Woman’s Shoes, a return of this beautiful show by the acclaimed Mikel Mufi. Run, Don’t Run is a thrilling new show from writer Gary Duggan and in March, Bassam tells the powerful personal story of Bassam Aramin whose daughter was killed by an Israeli soldier and Michael Harding brings us his new performance from Hanging with the Elephant. Tickle your tear ducts with some comedy nights out starting with Eleanor Tieran’s National Therapy Project in January - a good ol’ session on the quirks of being Irish, while Neil Delamere and the Nualas both return with brand new shows. For schools and families we have plenty in store with shows from Barnstorm Theatre, The Speks and Theatre Lovett among others not too mention some great workshops too. We are also thrilled to announce that the fabulous Theatre Lovett are settling back into Riverbank for another exciting year as our Artists in Residence (more info on the next page) Definitely do not miss your chance to see The Girl Who Forgot to Sing Badly in March – you have been warned! All this, and more, coming your way this season. We look forward to welcoming you to Riverbank Arts Centre. From Linda, Eric, Alex, Damien, Bridget, and all the team.

Michael Fassbender and Domhnal Gleeson star in this hilarious, offbeat comedy about a wannabe musician, Jon (Gleeson), who escapes his boring normal life and joins an avant-garde pop band led by Frank (Fassbender), a mysterious musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head, and his terrifying bandmate Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Critically acclaimed upon its release last May, Frank poses a series of hard questions about mental illness. Layered within its exploration of artistic expression, Lenny Abrahamson’s film examines our presumptions and prejudices about mental health issues, particularly within a creative context, to leave us with a work that engages as much as it entertains.

Fallout by johnny savage
january
dates: sat 17th jan - sat 21st mar opening night: sat 24th jan The Riverbank presents ‘Fallout’ a new exhibition of work by photographer, Johnny Savage. Savage spent almost two years photographing and developing this series of photographs, shooting in various towns and cities across Ireland, including in his native North Kildare. The resulting eerie and surreal landscapes present a view of a modern Ireland that is still haunted by its past. These photographs visit the all too familiar empty buildings on the edge of town, modern day ruins that have become part of our everyday landscape. Working in the twilight of dusk and dawn, Savage uses reflections to create complex and layered images. These photographs explore the illusion of wealth and certainty created by the property boom, while giving quiet consideration to what remains in the wake of the Celtic Tiger.

Hailed a few years back as “the most exciting and imaginative piano trio since EST,” Phronesis have more than lived up to the hype, evolving into one of the most exhilarating jazz trios in Europe and attracting rave reviews and a slew of awards along the way. Their explosive live performances packed with killer riffs and pulsing grooves, have captured the hearts and minds of audiences from Sydney to Monterey.
music
Phronesis is defined by the extraordinary empathy and interplay between the three musicians. At the heart of the band sits the big-toned bass of Dane Jasper Høiby, framed by the delicate lyricism of British pianist Ivo Neame and the serpentine polyrhythms of Swedish drummer Anton Eger. It’s a unique, uncompromising sound, using Høiby’s original compositions as a launch pad for collective conjuring where genre-bending and risk-taking is the norm.

Picture You, Picture Me is a collaborative and explorative portrait project between artist Emer Gillespie and her daughter Laoisha. Born in Galway Ireland in 2002, Laoisha has Downs Syndrome. As a consistent subject in Emer’s work, this series has naturally evolved from her curiosity and urge to stand on the other side of the camera, taking more control over the artist as the subject, and of the images taken. By ceding a certain amount of authorial control, the resulting work creates an environment in which to explore the themes of collaborative creativity, child autonomy, trust and the relationship between subject and photographer. Is technical ability a prerequisite for creative control? Does the photographer’s participation as a subject influence the narrative? Can a reciprocal experience empower one to become a more trusting and genuine subject? These are just a few of the possible considerations this series instigates. Photography, by its nature as a visual medium, only shows the surface of what are complex relationships and subjective realities. There is a desire to examine and document subtle relationships in contemporary, re-envisioned family life. As a participant-observer, these images are the artist’s own examination of appearance and existence, perception and thought through the visual exploration of her modern family.
Join the artist for a photography workshop on 20th Feb. See page 18

Dir: Volker Schlöndorff | France, Germany | Cert: Club | Language: French, German | Starring: Andre Dussollier, Niels Arestrup Towards the end of World War II, General Dietrick von Choltitz, the governor of Nazi-occupied Paris, receives an order to destroy the city if the Nazis lose it to Allied forces.
In this riveting adaptation of the stage play, the great Volker Schlöndorff has created a psychologically elaborate game of political manners between two highly contrasting characters played by two of France’s greatest stage and screen actors André Dussollier and Niels Arestrup. While Choltitz entrenches himself behind his duty to unquestioningly obey all military orders, Nordling tries everything he can to appeal to reason and humanity and prevent the senseless destruction of the beloved ‘City of Light.’ “Diplomacy” is deeply connected with its moment in history, yet resounds with timeliness in its study of ideologies and the necessary search for common ground.

His overwhelming image remains after watching this film about a man conflicted by living on the edge of two worlds. The film tells a story of Charlie, an Aboriginal man who paints tree barks and fishes barramundi fish, all the while feeling out of place in an Australia which is no longer his. They might be prostitutes. Daniel, a discreet man in his early fifties, invites a young man to his place, with wholly unpredictable consequences. Daniel will have to learn to fight to defend himself and the youth from the violent reaction of the group, led by a brutal man who is determined not to loosen his grip.

Written By Gary Duggan New York City, 1999 – A young man fleeing Dublin crash lands on the couch of his Irish American cousin, just as this older cousin’s relationship with his girlfriend is imploding. Over the summer, the three cling to the last vestiges of the dying club scene and flirt with small-time criminality as storm clouds gather. Part love triangle, crime thriller and immigrant story, RUN / DON’T RUN is a provocative and accessible new play from acclaimed writer Gary Duggan (RTE’s AMBER and FAIR CITY), previous plays produced by Fishamble and the Abbey Theatre.
“Duggan writes very well… a deft storyteller with a gift for pacy, punchy narratives and for quick clean characterisations.” Fintan O’Toole, IRISH TIMES

The parents of 14-yearold Maria belong to a fundamentalist Catholic community and have raised her according to the tenets of their strict faith. At school, Maria must face the jeers of her secular classmates for trying to remain true to her religion, while at home she lives under the constant disapproval of her mother who demands ever-more painful self-abnegations from her. Filmed in 14 long takes corresponding to the 14 stations of the cross, this emotionally wrenching film is also a formal triumph.

Sometimes it takes a girl-sized human to solve an adult-sized problem. Peggy O’Hegarty and her parents are packers. They squeeze fruit into tins, foxes into boxes, even bikes into brown paper bags. And all the while Peggy sings with the voice of an angel – a grossly unfortunate angel, who can’t sing at all. But one day work stops working, and the jobs stop coming, and Peggy steps outside to find that winter has arrived… and everyone in her city gone! Ingenious performer Louis Lovett leads the audience on an untamed adventure that crosses snowy lands and wild seas. As Peggy desperately tries to save the day, we learn about love, loss, the reassurance of goats, and the courage to sing gloriously on or off-key. Suitable for ages 7+ and adults of all ages.
