Riverbank Arts Centre: Focus On Illustration
Since 2009, we’ve worked with numerous illustrators to bring each season to live with a different and unique cover. From 2009 to 2016 we worked with the wonderful Brian Coldrick, who managed to create an exciting and different cover each season without fail. 24 illustrations in fact! In 2016 we decided to open up the illustration to other artists, as a means to showcase the talents of Irish or Irish based artists. Since then we’ve worked with Peter Donnelly, Sadie Kramer, Shona Shirley MacDonald, Fintan Taite, and Holly Pereira. Each creating a cover in their own unique style. The project continues this season with Dermot Flynn, full details below.

Keep up to date with everything we do across
our other work We’ve been busy behind the scenes, developing our offering to become a central hub for arts and creativity for county Kildare; a place where arts and culture become a real and tangible thing, accessible to everyone in our community. We are growing and developing our programme, reach, and support structure for artists, audiences, and community alike. While you may see all the events we have in our programme, you may not know the work we do behind the scenes and with other organisations across the county. Below is a small snapshot of what we do.
Things We’ve been Doing: For this coming season we’ve co-produced Woolly’s Quest, a show for young audiences, with Branar Téater do Pháistí which will premiere this season. We’ve also worked with Fidget Feet Aerial Dance Theatre on Hatch, a new aerial dance show for children. We are currently co-producing The Lonely Beast, a show for young audiences based on Chris Judge’s book, in collaboration with author Sarah Webb. Watch this space! We are also developing numerous community outreach and education programmes such as Home Is Where The Art Is.
our other work Things we’re Supporting: Other shows we’re supporting include the development of Sing me to the Sea by Anna Newell, a hydropool show for children with PMLD, in partnership with Wicklow Arts Office, Enable Bray, and Enable Naas/West Wicklow. For over two years we have hosted This Must be the Place, an arts and health programme in partnership with The Creative Well and Kildare County Council Arts Service. We are delighted to continue to provide support The Past Times Community Choir, NT Connections for Youth Theatres, along with Kildare-based Speckintime Theatre, and Lomantics.
Partnerships Throughout 2018 we continue to work with Institute of Technology Tallaght, Words Ireland, Access Cinema, Fighting Words, Children’s Books Ireland, Irish Film Institute, National Gallery of Ireland, and many other cultural organisations with a common goal - bringing the best of arts and creativity to our community.

visual arts
Saturday 14th April - Saturday 2nd June McKenna Gallery and Children’s Gallery The Moon Belongs to Everyone is an exhibition about home and belonging, with reference to child refugees. The main part of the show is a journey through a paper landscape. It can seem full of adventure, has items with history to examine and ends in a paper hut containing a story within. It gently looks at themes that touch child refugees while encouraging conversation and thought. For this showing of the work Riverbank Arts Centre has also commissioned work created by the artist with Syrian refugee children and young adults from Hazel Emergency Reception Orientation Centre in Monasterevin. The Children’s Gallery shows their drawings of home, a story about Aleppo and drawings of participants’ home towns before devastation by the war.

THE CRUCIBLE
Tuesday 22nd - Saturday 26th May, 8pm €15/€12 Newbridge Drama Group are back, this time taking on Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible. It is a story of tender love and murderous jealousy; of lives destroyed by false accusations; of passion and adultery and sin and of a storm of terror let loose through the effects of real and pretended mass hysteria on the part of a number of young girls. Finally, it contains a portrait of the most tender love between two people which has rarely been bettered on the stage. Today, we are all too aware of the terrible damage which innocent people suffer when they are made the victims of false accusations. In that sense, The Crucible is all too tragically a play for these times.

An exhibition by Eoin O’Malley, Paul Bokslag, and Orla Callaghan Tuesday 7th- Saturday 25th August Children’s Gallery Artists Eoin O’Malley and Orla Callaghan, have worked together for years at the KARE Lalor Centre in Baltinglass . They first met Paul Bokslag at Eoin’s 2016 solo exhibition in the Riverbank Arts Centre through the Arts and Disability Ireland Connect Mentoring scheme. Over a period of a year they met a number of times to support the development of Eoin’s professional practice. During these sessions the three developed a strong interest in each other’s work and after the mentorship was completed the wish grew to continue the connection and work towards a small three-person exhibition. This is the first time that they will show their work together. For this exhibition all three have worked using paper as a medium, but through very different approaches. For Eoin O’ Malley, paper is the surface on which he develops his gestural layered drawings using brush and inks. Paul Bokslag works with a scalpel to create papercuts that explore positive and negative space. Orla Callaghan has reworked old photographic prints from the darkroom, to build collages that place older elements in new constellations.
