Riverbank Spring Season April to June 2011 Hello there, and welcome to a fresh and sprightly Spring season for April to June 2011. Last season saw some exciting developments at Riverbank with our upgrade to Digital Cinema and the development of a brand new children’s arts space at the centre. The benefits of these improvements are reflected this season with a host of exciting shows, workshops and exhibitions for families and children, and an Oscar worthy cinema line-up. In other areas, we are delighted to welcome Paul Brady for what will be two very special nights of music at Riverbank. The Unthanks and Declan O’Rourke plus a special Bob Dylan evening also add to a great music line-up. We have three fabulous nights planned at the Keadeen Hotel with the return of Faulty Towers- the Dining Experience. The Parting Glass, Here We Are Again Still and The Quare Land are amongst our theatre highlights, while Neil Delamere and David McSavage will satisfy the comedy fans. Also, we have two exciting festival events taking place at Riverbank in May. A host of literary stars will be in attendance for the weekend of the Kildare Readers Festival, while the Bealtaine Festival brings a range of workshops, music with Ger Wolfe and theatre with Mary McEvoy to celebrate creativity in older age. These events and much more are here for you to enjoy. We look forward to seeing you soon, Hugh, Damien, Linda, Alex & all the team at Riverbank Arts Centre

‘It’s a cultural thing or is it? - A Traveller in progress’ is based on the life experiences of Michael Collins, a Traveller, who remembers his childhood through innocent eyes. The performance sees Michael going from living in the fields of Kilbeggan in a barrel top wagon to living in a tent at the top of Prosperous Hill. He describes his family’s journey to Dublin to join the other Travellers who started the exodus to Dublin as a result of changes in the social welfare system and the end of the traditional way of life… This is a fast paced sequence of stories that are a microcosm of the history of the Traveller community over the past 40 years. Starring Michael Collins as himself, with Patricia McCarthy as the narrator. Directed by Mick Rafferty. ‘Entertaining, enriching and provocative’ Irish Times 16

Originally formed by five graduates of the St. Thomas Boys‘ Choir, Leipzig, the group added the glittering soprano voice of Anja Lipfert in 2001 in order to expand their repertoire, which now encompasses everything from Gregorian chants, Irish airs, jazz and folk songs to the music of Palestrina, Bach and Debussy. Acclaimed for its flawless intonation and extraordinary harmonic amalgam, this award-winning ensemble has toured extensively worldwide. “Technically stunning singers, but equally important, their interpretive talents and musicality are matchless… they bring passion to their interpretations and whatever they sing to glorious life.” Desert Morning News (Salt Lake City)

Time 8pm price €16/€14 The Mercury Music Prize nominated Tyneside sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank have become most legendary for their live performances and Riverbank Arts Centre is delighted to be able to bring you a night with this superb act. Empathetic stories of love, loss, birth, death, brawls and booze make for a rollercoaster ride through the human condition, as Rachel and Becky’s folk-club unaccompanied singing upbringing is set against otherworldly musical pictures, arranged by a band with influences from Steve Reich to Miles Davies, Martin Hayes to Robert Wyatt, Portishead to Sufjan Stevens. It’s hard to conceive how music could sound so traditional and adventurous at once. It is a spell that has earned them fans as disperate as members of Radiohead and Portishead, Nick Hornby, Elvis Costello, Robert Wyatt, Ewan McGregor, Ryan Adams, Paul Morley, Ben Folds, Rosanne Cash and Dawn French! Described by Britain’s leading music journalist Paul Morley as both “supernaturally ancient and defiantly modern, as coldly desolate as achingly intimate”, The Unthanks occupy unique ground. The Unthanks will play music from their new album, as well as from their previous records, including The Bairns, which featured in both the The Guardian and Uncut’s Best Albums of the Decade, all genres, worldwide - the only British folk album to do so. “once in a blue moon type of every now and again, you hear music that is so complete, so wonderful, unique and yet familiar that it stops you in your tracks. They have that blue moon magic about them, and they have it in spades” BBC Music

The Circus Stachamoose from Your Man’s Puppets introduces us to the theatrical delights from the intrepid Stachamoose brothers, who hail from the mist-shrouded Orient.
Vlado, the magician, is the sombre, enigmatic master of arts of varying degrees of darkness, while Elmer is, in Bob Dylan’s memorable phrase, really just a song-and-dance man. These suspiciously similar-looking brothers display an energetic mix of physical comedy and manual dexterity using a nicely balanced blend of mischievous humour and accomplished puppeteer skills. The brothers are joined by Jub-Jub, variously described as that dexterous dog, performing pooch and clowning canine. While no one of a romantic disposition will be able to resist the Hansters – part hand, part hamster – and their tale of true love. A special guest performance is provided in a death-defying tightrope act by a mysteriously shrunken Little Brother. As nice a slice of surreal humour as you’re likely to witness this year.

Starring Des Keogh and Frank O’Sullivan, The Quare Land is set in a house in Cavan where Hugh Pugh is about to take his first bath in four years. His bathing is disturbed by Rob McNulty, a developer on the verge of NAMA wanting to buy a field. Hugh conducts negotiations from his bathtub and is reluctant to sell while McNulty pulls out all the stops to complete the sale, but it is unlikely that either will be happy with the eventual outcome. The quick-fire banter between the two characters escalates into an epic finale as both try to reason each other into submission. A parable of the Celtic Tiger, The Quare Land examines motivation, greed and money in a humorous, caustic and incisive way. Hidden in the constant argument is a discourse on a society obsessed with development but blind to the implications of progress on ordinary people’s lives. With wit and humour, this play reveals some home truths about ambition guaranteed to generate roars of laughter. ‘This play is likely to be hugely popular wherever it travels to’-Irish Theatre Magazine

Dir: Tetsuya Nakashima / Japan / 2010 / 106 mins / Cert: Club / Language: Japanese . Starring: Takako Matsu, Yoshino Kimura, Masaki Okada, Yukito Nishii, Kaoru Fujiwara and Ai Hashimoto Impassive before a class where lack of interest and disorder reign, a teacher begins a long monologue that culminates in an overwhelming revelation: the accident that took her daughter´s life wasn´t an accident, but a murder perpetrated by two of her students. This is the disconcerting beginning of Tetsuya Nakashima’s new film, a pure gem where confessions revolving around a crime whose culprits we already know come one after another and even so, it hypnotizes the spectator while lubricating its vindictive machinery behind the scenes. A fragmented, icy thriller and a terrifying sociological study. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Oscar 2011 €3 Coffee & Cake Deal

A compelling documentary film four years in the making, The Pipe tells the story of the small Rossport community which has taken on the might of Shell Oil and the Irish State. The discovery of gas off this remote coastal village has led to the most dramatic clash of cultures in modern Ireland. The rights of farmers over their fields, and of fishermen to their fishing grounds, has come in direct conflict with one of the world’s most powerful oil companies. When the citizens look to their State to protect their rights, they find that the government has put Shell’s right to lay a pipeline over their own. Following the personal experience of three main characters at the height of local tension, The Pipe is a story of a community tragically divided, and the prospect of a pipeline that can bring economic prosperity or destroy of a way of life shared for generations. The Pipe – Winner of The George Morrison Feature Documentary Award at the IFTAs 2011.

‘Big Bad Beautiful World’ and the much loved song ‘Galileo’ are just two of the earworms that have contributed to Declan O’Rourke’s success. Formerly one of Ireland’s best kept secrets, rave reviews for his debut album ‘Since Kyabram’, a growing international fanbase and an enviable collection of eminent devotees, including Paul Weller, Snow Patrol and Kate Rusby, have changed that. The simplicity of great songs, a unique voice, understated charm, and quick-wittedness make him highly endearing to see live, and he is equally at home playing to one person as he is to thousands. Following the release of his new album on April 9th, this Riverbank session will be a two-piece show with Declan O’Rourke and percussion. A memorable night is in store for all. “It’s a rare gift that his music can bear comparison with so many classic-era troubadours while still sounding utterly original” - Uncut Magazine

With Les Choristes, first-time director Christophe Barratier has crafted a warm and melodious tribute to the power of music. Most of the pupils at the austere Fond de l’Étang boarding school are bullies and pranksters whose parents have given up on them; others are orphans who have recently lost their families to World War II. Hired as a mere assistant, Clément Mathieu discovers and nurtures their talents and eventually wins their trust through the music they create together. Remarkably, the worst of the bullies even emerges as the choir’s angel-voiced soloist. This is 2010 ‘Teens in the Wild’ territory as eight disadvantaged young people and their two teachers head off in a minibus for a weekend of bonding and self discovery in the countryside. As best laid plans fall apart and ‘trust games’ fail to work, the adventure looks like proving a failure before an unexpected turnabout brings about a surprise resolution. This play is part of the NAYD New Stage programme 2011. The programme showcases plays that have been generated by either member youth theatres or by the young people themselves and aims to ‘ create work for young people that is true and authentic to them and their voice’ Griese Youth Theatre acknowledges permission from NAYD to perform this play. Griese Youth Theatre began in July 1999 and provide a year round programme of Drama and Dance. They are located in the Meeting House in Ballitore. See www. grieseplayers.com and Facebook

At the heart of Jackie’s recent work is her love of the vast emptiness of the Icelandic landscape and the relationship to one’s self that is made possible in it. This work concentrates on the simplicity of the line and space of the landscape as documented on a road trip along the south of the country. In 2008, Astrid received the Arts Council Travel and Training Award and the Laois Patronage Award from Laois County Council which gave her the opportunity to travel to Canada to work with a dancer, Shelly Nafshi and create a body of work around this experience. The resulting exhibition Beloved, all is well was held in County Laois in 2009. Since then Astrid has continued to develop and work on the footage and research collected from her time collaborating with Shelly. This latest body of work is a continuation of the Beloved series but will see Astrid return to her practice of layering projection and drawings. Astrid deliberately likes the tension created between these two media and how this approach lends itself to her concepts considering themes of presence, reality, memory, loss and relationships. Astrid Walsh was born in Germany in 1976 but grew up in Ireland. She holds a BA (Hons) in Sociology from Trinity College, Dublin (1998) and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dublin (2005). Her work is held in private and public collections including Kildare County Council.

A Riddle is a photographic exhibition by Dragana Jurisic that captures hidden stories in children’s lives. What do you think is happening in these images? By calling the exhibition A Riddle the artist is inviting you to come up with your own stories and solutions much like a puzzle or a game. Are they connected? Are they telling the same story or are there many different stories? How do they make you feel? A riddle is a mystery that requires imagination and inventiveness to solve and as with any good riddle there could be more than one answer. One could even say that childhood is a riddle. Dragana Jurisic is a Croatian photographer based in Ireland for the past 12 years with a background in educational psychology. She graduated from the University of Wales, Newport, with distinction for her MFA degree in 2008 and is currently working towards her PhD. at the European Centre for Photographic Research, UK. Dragana has exhibited and received awards both in Ireland and internationally. For further information see www.draganajurisic.com
