ber 20we oc mRiverbank 10 have eceAt tobeatrthe -D Well, the Summer is over and it’s now time to start making plans for some cosy Autumn evenings theatre. plenty on offer this season, all guaranteed to stop the darker evenings from closing in on you and keep everyone in top form. On the theatre front we have lots of little gems- including the Little Gem, an outstanding production from Guna Nua/Civic Theatre. We are also delighted to have David McWilliams’ Outsiders, fresh from its run at the Abbey Theatre, and following a sell-out stint at Rathfarnham Castle, Kildare-based Performance Corporation bring us the highly amusing Slattery’s Sago Saga. Adapted by Arthur Riordan from the unfinished novel by Flann O’Brien, and directed by Jo Mangan, this is definitely one to earmark. Parents and teachers alike may have trouble selecting their favourites from the fantastic array of childrens’ shows this Autumn. The Ark in association with Theatre Lovett present The Girl Who Forgot to Sing Badly, there’s a reading event with authors Sarah Webb, Judi Curtin and Roisin Meaney and a ‘Meet the Author’ session with John Boyne, we have Halloween workshops with Artzone, Mini Music workshops for toddlers, expandance workshop for teens, and for Christmas get into the festive spirit with The Fourth Wise Man. All this and more, not to mention music with Bell X1 and Damien Dempsey amongst others, comedy with Des Bishop, Jarlath Regan and Pat Shortt. There’s a season of great films at Riverbank CINEMA, a new film appreciation club, visual art exhibitons…we could go on and on…so make yourself a cup of tea, relax and have a go at selecting your favourite events. We recommend booking early though, you don’t want to be disappointed! Best wishes from Hugh, Linda, Alex, Damien and all the Riverbank staff

A warm & intimate fully seated gig with Damien Dempsey- Unmissable! Born in Donaghmede on Dublin’s Northside in 1975, Damien Dempsey is the voice of that underclass and the quintessential Irish singer songwriter. Described as ‘the Bob Marley of Ireland’ (The Times), Dempsey was influenced by Christy Moore, Luke Kelly, Shane MacGowan, Bob Marley and Elvis Presley. Having won six Meteor Awards to date, Damien Dempsey’s live performances are something special indeed. He has become the most vibrant and vital Irish live performer working today. He has played with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, U2 and The Pogues. Dempsey’s stage craft and voice is so powerful that it prompted Bono to say “when he opens his mouth - it’s like the end of the world.” “A phenomenal voice...” - Sunday Times “...one of the greatest songwriters of his generation” - Irish Abroad (USA) “...whip-smart lyrical tours de force...his songwriter’s eye for detail astounds..” HOT PRESS

Best known in Ireland for their association with the Riverdance phenomenon, Anúna’s unique performance style and ethereal, haunting music have garnered critical acclaim and an enormous international following over the last decade. Now this outstanding ensemble intends to support choral education in Ireland through an exciting new training initiative, spearheaded by Anúna’s founder, Michael McGlynn and managed by Artery (Arts Management). Members of Anúna will deliver a pilot series of singers’ workshops taking place throughout the country, from July to November. These events follow on from the success of recent workshops including the Cork International Choral Festival, a sold out workshop series in Japan, work with the vocal ensembles at the University of Miami and Florida Atlantic University in the USA and Michael McGlynn’s mentoring of X-Factor competitors in Finland earlier this year. The workshops are aimed at a very broad range of participants, including individual singers and established local amateur choirs. Observers are also very welcome to attend. In general, the workshops will focus on individual singers’ posture, voice production and other “physical” aspects of singing. Through supportive exercises, demonstrations and break-out training sessions led by Anúna’s core education team, participants can expect to learn a number of simple yet excellent techniques to assist in the development of their own singing skills and general musicianship. 6

By Dario Fo, translated by Joseph Farrell. Directed by Lisa May. “I think I’ll go in for this type of shopping every day. Not just because I didn’t pay for it, but because, all of a sudden, we were all in it together, men and women, and it felt right. We stood up to them!” An uproarious brand new 2010 version, by Dario Fo himself, of his frenetic 1974 farce, “Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay.” Bruiser is delighted to be presenting the Northern Ireland, Republic Of Ireland and Scotland Premiere of this new version. Housewives, Antonia and Margherita, fed up with high prices in the supermarket, take matters into their own hands and start shoplifting. Keen to keep their light-fingered antics from their husbands, Giovanni and Luigi - not to mention the police - the women are forced to resort to more and more inventive hiding places and more and more elaborate cover stories, in this new version of the legendary comedy. “Farce at its finest...simply glorious” The Stage

Brace yourself for a few bombshells as Greg Felton’s trio go head to head with the incomparable vocalist Isa Wiss. Tipped as a major star of the future, Wiss is one of those musicians who defies description; her remarkable technique and three-octave range make her a truly free improviser who can switch from stuttering gasps and cries to honeyed tones in a single phrase. Greg Felton is the perfect foil for Wiss’ vocal acrobatics. Hailed in the Irish Times as “the most gifted young pianist on the scene,” Felton is another fearless improviser whose distinctive compositions and two-fisted technique draw on everything from jazz and folk traditions to South Indian classical music. “An extraordinary range… meticulous control… gorgeous floating tones.” Chicago Reader on Isa Wiss “Dazzling post-Cecil Taylor banging...” Downbeat Magazine on Greg Felton “Possibly the best drummer ever produced here.” Irish Times on Seán Carpio

The Lambert Puppet Theatre is now widely recognised as the premier puppet theatre Company in Ireland and also internationally renowned for its many fine productions in theatres throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe. From its earliest beginning, the Lambert family has been involved with RTE TV, working on the hugely popular series Wanderly Wagon featuring the late Eugene Lambert and Judge. Paula Lambert was the voice of ‘Bosco’ on TV for seventeen years and indeed Bosco is still a firm favourite with the younger children and will make a nostalgic appearance in the opening part of the show. This is a beautifully produced show with large puppets, colourful sets and exquisite lighting. A magical tale, a superb puppet company.

FROM MULTI AWARD WINNING THEATRE COMPANY GUNA NUA AND AWARD WINNING DIRECTOR LIAM HALLIGAN COMES AN INNOVATIVE AND INTERACTIVE EVENT FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS. Liam Halligan, a team of actors, and a box of costume pieces and props will replicate, for students, a rehearsal room for Shakespeare’s plays. Students will be introduced to the language structure, to character interpretation and scene work; to the given circumstances; character motivation; the possible social and political context and the challenges of the text for present day actors. Students will then be encouraged and facilitated to ask questions and to make suggestions, to effectively direct the scene. The actors will take these questions and suggestions on board and replay the scene accordingly, to sometimes powerful and sometimes comic effect. The principal concern for Shakespeare for Schools is engagement with students and this is achieved through performance, reminding ourselves at all times that William Shakespeare was primarily a working professional actor and writer.

Fresh from its success at the Dublin International Gay Theatre Festival (nominated Best New Writing) and initial Irish tour, Language UnBecoming A Lady comes to Riverbank Arts Centre… In a dressing room an ageing drag queen reveals his life and loves, victories and defeats. Exploring the themes of identity, love found and love lost, and using the music of Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Billie Holiday and more, Language UnBecoming a Lady reveals the story of one gay man’s life. From his childhood through adolescence and onto adulthood, the one constant in his life is the music of the divas who provide comfort, strength and inspiration. A funny and touching portrait of gay life in Ireland over the last 40 years. NB: This show contains some adult content and some strong language. “fabulously written, wonderfully acted, tells an extremely important story, and it is an undoubted success” “a touching historical journey through the Ireland of the last 30 years” Irish Theatre Magazine “Robert’s story is touching, funny and achingly sad. Peggy O’Hegarty and her parents are packers. They squeeze fruit into tins, foxes into boxes, even bikes into brown paper bags. And all the while Peggy sings with the voice of an angel - a grossly unfortunate angel, who can’t sing at all. But one day work stops working, and the jobs stop coming, and Peggy steps outside to find that winter has arrived... and everyone in her city gone! Ingenious performer Louis Lovett leads the audience on an untamed adventure that crosses snowy lands and wild seas. As Peggy desperately tries to save the day, we learn about love, loss, the reassurance of goats, and the courage to sing gloriously on or off-key. ‘an absolute gem of a production…Why can’t all theatre be like this?’ - THE VIEW, RTÉ ‘it spills surprises with every manoeuvre...Indeed, the entire show hums with nimble, exploratory intelligence’ - THE IRISH TIMES ‘Kruckemeyer is a significant force in theatre for young people...one of the best plays for children’ —IRISH THEATRE MAGAZINE

Leading economist and commentator David McWilliams takes to the stage in Outsiders - a vivid, humorous and uncompromising account of Ireland’s boom and bust… and our way out. Ireland’s political and social divide is not so much about rich and poor, young and old, urban and rural, but about insiders and outsiders. The insiders believe that today’s status quo must be preserved at all costs. The outsiders are those of us who realise that the status quo is part of the problem. In Ireland every time there is a crisis, the insiders get stronger. Far from losing power and paying for the chaos they caused, they tighten their grip on the country. This is what happened in the 1950s and the 1980s and it is happening again now. But there is an alternative. Outsiders is about that alternative. The Abbey Theatre is delighted to present this production which first premiered on the Peacock stage earlier this year and performed to sold out houses. Written and Performed by David McWilliams Director: Conall Morrison Set and Lighting design: John Comiskey Sound Design: Derek Conaghy ‘witty and entertaining’ Irish Independent ‘a very entertaining night’ The Irish Times ‘a bravura performance’ Pat Kenny Show, RTÉ

Balthasar, Melchior, Caspar and ...Jack?... Who’s Jack? THE FOURTH WISE MAN, by Johnny Hanrahan and John Browne is based on the old Eastern legend that one of the Magi never made it to Bethlehem because he was down the pub, washing the camel, engaging in casbah therapy or just generally too busy. It is a funny, moving tale of how one man finds his highway to heaven by setting off determinedly in the wrong direction. A big child in the body of a mighty man, King Jack is led through a series of adventures with peddlers, lost girls, soldiers and nearly slaughtered innocents which bring him to a new understanding of love, the divine in everyday life and what being a king really means. Dir: George Seaton/ USA/ 1947/ 96mins /Cert: G Starring: Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Edmund Gwenn. “Miracle on 34th Street” is an apt title for such a magical Oscarwinning film. For this, the original 1947 version, Edmund Gwenn received the Best Supporting Actor award for his portrayal of Santa. He really does seem to embody everything that Father Christmas should be. And this comes in handy when the Macy’s department store need a Santa in a hurry for their annual parade He’s hired by Maureen O’Hara, who has raised her young daughter Susan (Natalie Wood) not to believe in such nonsense as Father Christmas. He takes this attitude in his stride and is only too happy to convince her otherwise. But before he can prove himself to Susan, he’s standing in a court of law, on charges of insanity for claiming to be who he is. The question posed not only to the characters of the movie, but also to the audience is, ‘do you believe in Santa Claus?’ An all-time Christmas classic.

Dir: Michael Hoffman/Germany/Russia/UK/2009/112 mins/Cert: 15A Starring: Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, Paul Giamatti, James McAvoy, Kerry Condon and Anne-Marie Duff. Language: English A stellar cast and genuinely fascinating subject matter make this fictionalised account of the final days of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy an engrossing watch. Since the year is 1910, it’s almost surprising to see the great man (a suitably imposing Christopher Plummer) treated as a multi-media celebrity, yet reporters and newsreel cameramen dog his steps, covering the ongoing dispute between Sofya (Helen Mirren), his wife of some 46 years, and the Tolstoyan political movement that’s contesting the valuable publishing rights for War and Peace. Each side seeks to use Tolstoy’s new secretary (James McAvoy) to discover what the old man’s really thinking, yet the elderly author is just as interested in this earnest young man’s romantic misadventures.
