Hello and welcome to the Spring – Summer season at Riverbank Arts Centre! We hope our April – August brochure finds you well and ready for all the fun and entertainment we are bringing this season. Here are some of the highlights of the upcoming months: Family: As always at Riverbank Arts Centre, we look forward to welcoming in our youngest audience members and we have a so much for families and schools this season. From hair raising aerial performances brought to us by The Ark and Fidget Feet to the return of Branar’s beautiful version of Oliver Jeffers’ The Way Back Home in June, we’ve got plenty to excite and delight. In addition to our regular programme of workshops and family screenings, we are also very excited to announce our first ever children’s animation and book weekend– Animagination, which takes place in April. We’ll be joined by heroes of the Irish animation world Cartoon Saloon and Brown Bag Films for what promises to be a must for any book, illustration or film fan! Cinema: A great season for the movies, with Oscar Winning Birdman, The Theory of Everything and Still Alice, as well as some new movies from Japan, France and Argentina. This August we are very proud to bring you the IFI Family Film Festival – a real treat for little and big ones alike! Theatre: This season is jam packed with outstanding theatre productions including Frank Pig Say Hello, Tom Crean - The Antarctic Explorer, Edinburgh Fringe First winning Chef and Jockey by Willfred Theatre. We will also be hosting the Abbey on Tour with their new production Maeve’s House. And don’t miss our Bealtaine Festival theatre programme! Music: Our music highlights this season include the outstanding Jack Lukeman and Junefest’s best Luka Bloom. Comedy: Need a laugh? Look no further than Foil, Arms and Hog: Beggorah for the very best in Irish sketch comedy. PJ Gallagher returns with a brand new show Separated at Birth, which is guaranteed not to disappoint fans of his indomitable style. Residency: Our friends Theatre Lovett are back with us again this season for training, workshops and more. We’ll also be sending them out on the road, so catch them at library near you! Visual Arts: Our children’s gallery will once again be a hive of activity as we welcome in Nicole Tilley’s: And the Latern Eyed Girl Stepped Out. Nicole will also offer a Crazy Creature Making workshop that promises to be a lot of fun. In the McKenna Gallery, the month of May will be an exciting one as we host the Creative Well for visuals, discussions, workshops and artworks. Later in the summer Vincent Brady brings us A Walk Up Mainstreet, a photography exhibition that will take the viewer on a nostalgic trip through Newbridge. We Look forward to welcoming you to Riverbank Arts Centre. From Alex, Damien, Eric, Bridget and all the team!

The Creative Well presents

Open Studio at Riverbank Arts Centre Do you want to be creative? Are you looking for a space in the community to experiment and create? Whether you are a complete beginner or practicing artist...or somewhere in the middle, The Open Studio is a place for experimentation, connection, research and play. This is a space where creativity is taken seriously. Kildare County Council Arts Service has commissioned artists Emma Finucane and Dominic Thorpe to develop a year long research residency partnering the arts service and Riverbank Arts Centre with primary health care and community services in Kildare. Studio open each Monday 10am-12pm and 1-3pm. All welcome, though places are limited and booking is essential. Our friends Theatre Lovett drop anchor at Riverbank Arts Centre again this summer and they won’t have too long to get comfortable before we send them off with their packed lunches on a whistle stop tour of libraries all around the county in June. Not only will they be bringing their very special brand of theatrical trickery far and wide, but they will also be offering unique opportunities in professional training for both actors and teachers in April. There are also BIG plans afoot for a World Premier in September, which Riverbank and Theatre Lovett are working on together, but…we might just keep you in suspense about that a little longer. Trust us, it’s worth waiting for!

Dubbed by the critics as a ‘powerhouse of sketch comedy’, Foil Arms and Hog have recently completed a World tour, have over 4 million hits on Youtube, are starring on Jason Byrne’s upcoming TV3 show ‘Snaptastic’ and have sold out six years running at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In addition the lads recently won a comedy award at the Adelaide Fringe festival and are working on a sitcom for BBC3. In this show you’ll find out what happens at an Irish Intervention for a boy who ‘doesn’t drink’, you’ll see the self indulgent ‘La Bullshat’ theatre group, and you’ll meet Christian Rockers ‘God Vibrations’. Fantastically bizarre and deliriously funny, it’s sketch comedy at its best.

Kevin likes the idea of this, of being a prince on a horse, a beautiful brown horse with a white splotch down his nose and galloping across the kingdom. His kingdom. From his bedroom behind the eighth door, on the eighth floor of a tall building (one of eight in a row), Kevin can go. And he wants to go. Far away from here. So his towering imagination takes him on some high-flying adventures. But there’s a storm coming and he needs to decide what’s real and what’s not real as his fast paced fantasies land with a spectacular bump right there on his bed. Far Away from Me is a new theatre show written and directed by Amy Conroy, inspired by The Princess and the Pea and infused with the wild energy of aerial performance, dance music and great storytelling.

The multi-award winning Cartoon Saloon, producers of Oscar nominated films, The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, make a return visit to Riverbank Arts Centre this season to host a very special illustration and design workshop. Fabian Erlinghäuser: Animation Supervisor at Cartoon Saloon will give participants an introduction to designing characters as well as a brief introduction to storyboards, composition and animation techniques featuring an exciting mix of visual language basics and cartoon character design. The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea were nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Film category, so participants of this workshop will have an opportunity to learn from the very best in the world of animation. *Cartoon Saloon’s previous session at Riverbank sold out very fast so early booking is advised to avoid disappointment.

Made by the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, this has an enchanting, at times ghoulish, appeal. An adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story, Selick’s film most beautifully captures the book’s free-floating, fantastic sense of adventure and wonder. Forced into a life of drudgery by his evil aunts Sponge and Spiker (Margolyes and Lumley), orphan James dreams of escape to New York. An old man (Postlethwaite) appears and gives the boy a jigging handful of fluorescent, magical crocodile tongues. A dead peach tree bears a gigantic fruit, and diving Alice-like into its core, James enters a world of strange invertebrates. As his wishes take flight, so does the peach, putting to sea and soaring up in the air, hauled majestically by a flock of tethered sea-gulls. The songs and music have the inimitable signature of Randy Newman.

A four day practical workshop for professional actors led by Louis Lovett. This course introduces actors to theatre making for the young and old. Theatre Lovett’s artist training course introduces artists to theatre as applied specifically to theatre for children and family audiences.

Louis Lovett’s own unique style of physical theatre embraces the spirit of play – an essential component for any practitioner in providing quality theatre experiences for audiences of any age. Muireann Ahern Lovett focuses on age-pitch, international work in this field and child protection policy.

Eva, a resilient and alluring young jockey, infiltrates the stables of Pope Healy, a wealthy racing magnate. Determined to get revenge on behalf of her late father, her plan is thrown into chaos when she falls for Pope’s wayward son. Is Eva ruthless enough to kill Pope and bring down his empire or will she give up revenge for love? ‘All About Eva’ was commissioned by Kildare County Council and featured local actors and crew and written by Pauric Brennan, Joe Campbell, Mary Duffin, Richard Kearney and Zoe Palmer. Shot on location in Athy, May 2014, it was directed by Ferdia Mac Anna, produced by Lucina Russell and stars Sue Walsh, Liam Quinlivan and Jill Bradbury.

The kind that we carry with us in memory through to our adult lives - the creature under the bed, the fairy, the toys that come alive at night, the dragons and the unicorns. They are also the beloved toys that we carried around as children until they eventually fell apart or were discarded, lost, kept or passed on to our own children. Kildare providing a fun and relaxed space for people to engage their creativity through experimentation, exploration and play. Open to all, from beginner to practicing artist and everyone in between The Creative Well: OPEN STUDIO in partnership with Riverbank Arts Centre presents “All that work and all this finding out” The Creative Well is an ongoing collaboration between visual artists’ Emma Finucane and Dominic Thorpe, Kildare’s Arts and Wellbeing coordinator Carolann Courtney and Catherine O’Grady, a HSE project coordinator (Former HSE clinical nurse specialist). For the month of May we will fill the gallery with visuals, a series of discussions, workshops, and artworks. A walk up mainstreet an exhibition by vincent brady sat 7th june - sat 27th june the mckenna gallery Official Launch June 10th This is a photographic exhibition featuring the shop fronts of Main Street Newbridge photographed on a Sunday morning. As they were taken in 1981 it will be interesting for viewers to see how much the town has changed in the intervening years. Many shops well known at the time have since disappeared to be replaced by new ones. The appearance of other shops have undergone great change as the years have moved on. The exhibition aims to rekindle the memories of the viewers as to how we looked just over 30 years ago.

This time all participants will get to write their very own story, and illustrate it. They will then construct and bind their own book to bring home and keep forever and ever! Welcome to Maestro Cafaggi’s fragile and fanciful world of soap bubbles where you will meet….the conductor without an orchestra the musician without an instrument and the breathless singer. An eccentric conductor takes you into the slippery world of soap bubbles to perform for you a concert where the unexpected is always waiting in ambush; from odd instruments giant bubbles appear, bouncing bubbles, portable bubbles, bunches of bubbles, and where the some people might be invited to enter into a giant bubble…. a theatrical show without words, a visual comedy. A show of clownery, mime and music, for audiences of all ages. Ages 2+

Following on from their successful February workshop series, the Createschool team returns for 5 days of solid stop motion. Join us and learn about set design, lighting, soundscapes, stop motion techniques and much more. Cast your favourite Lego character in your movie which will be set in landscapes and settings that you will design and create with a variety of materials (all supplied). Participants will work in small groups to collaborate and create the set, storyboard and plan their stop motion movies, then on to film and produce it. The workshop is focused on a combination of simple demonstration with plenty of hands on learning. All participants will receive a certificate of participation and a copy of their movie! All materials are supplied though we would encourage participants to bring along their own favourite Lego characters.

Artzone is back for an end of summer camp. The Artzone teachers have developed two new portfolios with a wide range of colourful and fun-filled art pieces. This week with Artzone is divided into two age groups 5-7yrs and 8-12yrs. Each portfolio includes a full range of themed art, crafts, stories and related games. As always, early booking is advised.

This summer, the IFI and access>CINEMA will bring selected highlights of the IFI Family Festival on the road, and we are delighted that Riverbank Arts Centre will join this three-venue tour. The Festival takes place each July and features some of the best children’s films from around the world in a unique programme that comprises screenings, workshops and special guests. The films are chosen to suit young audiences from ages three to 12 and include stories of family, animals, friendship and magic, in animations, live actions, features and shorts. This special touring programme will give Riverbank family audiences some summertime international adventures on film.
