Your Visit Riverbank Arts Centre: Focus On Illustration Never judge a book by it’s cover, or so the phrase goes. We like to think differently! Every single season Riverbank Arts Centre commissions a new illustration to adorn the cover. We started the process with the fantastic illustrator, Brian Coldrick, who created 24 unique covers over an 8 year period. Our last brochure was the first in our new series, for which we are commissioning a different artist each season. You can see all our unique illustrations and read more information about the illustrators on riverbank.ie/cover

6 The Creative Well in association with Riverbank Arts Centre presents:
This Must Be the Place Riverbank Arts Centre is delighted to work with The Creative Well arts and well-being project on a new residency throughout 2017. The Creative Well visual arts programme of work aims to build and support well-being and rich life experiences by encouraging adults to engage with their creativity through visual art. In a friendly social space, we welcome people with all levels of abilities and life experiences, providing opportunities for everyone from complete beginners, to practicing artists and all in between! The McKenna Gallery at the Riverbank Arts Centre will be utilised not only as a place to see wonderful artworks but also a place where people can engage with their own creativity directly through a series of visual art workshops and artists talks open to all. We will also offer a series of opportunities for practicing artists to develop their work by using the gallery as a studio space for short periods in 2017. Building on our successful curatorial project last year we will also work with a number of local organisations to select contemporary artworks for showing in the McKenna Gallery.

opening launch: sat 14th jan 1pm
an exhibition by Jole Bortoli sat 7th january - sun 25th february children’s gallery Written and illustrated by Jole Bortoli, IRIA is a story for all ages. It is a tale about the journey of a creature that inhabits ‘in-between’ worlds: water and earth, west and east, the written and the oral tradition, the real and the imaginary. It retains the magic of a fairy tale and the beauty of well-crafted art books. The exhibition IRIA is a mixture of paintings and drawings in mixed media. The book IRIA is the printed version of the story and will serve as a guide for the exhibition.

Boston in the late ‘70s; Cameron (Mark Ruffalo) is struggling with bipolar disorder; the future appears uncertain for his wife Maggie (Zoe Saldana) and their two daughters when a particularly difficult period sees him both fired from his job and hospitalised. When she is awarded a business scholarship to attend Columbia University, Maggie convinces her reluctant husband – convalescing at home on lithium treatment - to look after the girls for the eighteen months she’ll be in New York, a less than ideal arrangement given his frequent manic behaviour and booze-soaked depressions. For her debut feature writer/director Maya Forbes draws on personal experience of being raised by a bipolar father; by turns poignant and humorous, Infinitely Polar Bear is a refreshingly positive depiction of living with mental illness. When it comes to moulding traditional sounds into contemporary songs, few match the inventiveness and heart-rending emotion of Orkney-born singer Kris Drever. Drever has been described by Q magazine as ‘the standard bearer’ of the folk music revival. Drever’s no-holds barred approach is shared by Julie Fowlis, a silver-toned singer whose voice – ‘pure and elemental as a Hebridean seashore’ – has seen her become Gaelic music’s most celebrated global ambassador. In 2016 Crooked House received Young Ensemble Scheme support from the Arts Council to develop a project with its youth theatre (Kildare Youth Theatre). The project explored the impact of migration in young people in Kildare. Using the metaphor of Shakespearian Venice, this new work tells stories of those left behind in the mass migration of the last decade, and throws some light on why the runaway Jessica says she is ‘never merry when I hear sweet music.’ Venetians is a collaboration between 13 young performers, theatre-maker Peter Hussey, musician Gary O’ Reilly, and mentors Bush Makourzel and Annie Ryan. Jack L celbrates the launch of his new album, Magic Days, with a welcome return to Newbridge. Jack promises to deliver a spectacular event with some great new characters to introduce you to, including The King Of Soho and many more intriguing creations from his vivid imagination!
Anthropoid is based on the extraordinary true story of Operation Anthropoid - the WWII mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect behind the Final Solution and the Reich’s third in command after Hitler and Himmler.
2016 was a busy year for Jack, having shared the stage in London at The Royal Albert Hall for The Jools Holland Show. He also picked up 2 awards at The Hollywood Fringe Festival, in California “The Judges Pick Best Act” award and the Press award for Best Performance of the Festival.
This taut and claustrophobic thriller from the director and co-writer Sean Ellis stars the excellent Cillian as the fiercely committed Josef Gabčík. Jamie Dornan does very well in the slightly more reticent role of his co-conspirator Jan Kubiš. An intelligent, tough and gripping movie.

Struggling to think, live and love beyond the stifling expectations of duty, class and convention, governess Jane Eyre and Master Edward Rochester take a dark journey towards sensual and intellectual liberation. Told through Jane’s eyes, English literature’s most celebrated autobiographical novel shocked the Victorians, and Charlotte Brontë’s gothic subversion of fairytale romance is now distilled for the stage – under its full title – by writer/director Elton Townend Jones. Performer Rebecca Vaughan embodies everywoman Jane – and several other characters – in this intimate study of love’s realities. ★★★★★ ‘Hands down the best adaptation of Jane Eyre, in any medium.’ -Broadway Baby

An exhibition of works by members of Illustrators Ireland
monday 6th march time: 8pm | tickets: €6
sat 4th march - sat 22nd april mckenna gallery & children’s gallery Without the Words is an exhibition inspired by a line from Emily Dickinson’s well loved poem Hope is the Thing with Feathers as well as Laureate na nÓg PJ Lynch’s “The Big Picture”. While Dickinson reminds her readers to always have hope, Lynch promotes visual storytelling and the power of imagination. Imagination and hope make a powerful combination. In most circumstances an illustrator will respond to a brief which is communicated either through written or spoken word. As supporters of visual literacy Illustrators Ireland propose to tell our visual stories, putting the pictures first- without the words. Here we tell our stories; visually stimulating the imagination to respond by creating an individual narrative, not a prescribed story. With over 50 members’ work on exhibition, we invite you to find your own narratives within the original works, create your own stories from the pieces. It is your turn to respond to our brief; we invite everyone to sing the tune without the words.
