Welcome to Jan-Mar at Riverbank

Hello there and welcome to a brand new year, a brand new season and lots of brand new additions JanatuRiverbank arch 2011 MCentre. ary -Arts First things first, let us tell you about some very exciting new developments here…We are delighted to announce that digital cinema has arrived at Riverbank. What does this mean for you? Well, basically, we will now provide a true cinema experience with top sound and picture quality to rival any commercial cinema. We will also be able to bring you the best of film picks from a range of new and recent cinema titles. It is a great development for film lovers in Kildare, and best of all, tickets are priced from 13 so you can’t beat that in terms of value! Secondly, at Riverbank, we are dedicated to providing a great arts experience for all ages and with this in mind, we are currently developing a special children’s arts space just off the main entrance in the foyer. In this area we will have children’s art exhibitions, video projections, small performances and more. It’s a work in progress but watch this space… Now, back to the programme for January to March and as always, we have a great line-up of events. Jack L, Eddi Reader, Frankie Gavin & De Dannan and The National Chamber Choir, to name but a few, will fill us with music this season while Jason Byrne, Maeve Higgins and comic theatre with The Blanch will keep us laughing through the next few months. Speaking of laughter, the much loved Newbridge comedy boys Schnitzel are back in town and will be bringing us a brilliant night of comedy with Diet of Worms and Gearoid Farrelly in February. For theatre lovers we have Beckett, Hamlet, Philadelphia Here I Come, Silent, a new play from Fishamble and Pat Kinnevane, Dear Frankie and much more. We’re running out of space here but needless to say there are family shows, workshops for children and adults, great film and exhibitions all happening here at Riverbank over the next three months. So, as always, make yourself comfortable, peruse the events at your leisure, and if you like what you see, we urge you not to delay & book your tickets as soon as you can- you don’t want to be disappointed! Best wishes from Hugh, Alex, Damien, Linda and all the Riverbank team.

FRANKIe GAVIN & de dANNAN Time price

Frankie Gavin is one of the genuine legends of Irish music. Having worked with such luminaries as Earl Scruggs, Stephane Grapelli, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, and the ‘Rolling Stones’, ‘the prince of Irish fiddlers’ is one of the outstanding performers of the past thirty years. Frankie is also the original founding member of internationally acclaimed traditional super group ‘De Dannan’. Responsible for bringing singers Dolores Keane, Mary Black, Maura O Connell and Tommy Fleming, amongst many others, to international prominence, the group disbanded in 2003. In 2009, Frankie Gavin unleashed “De Dannan of the 21st century”, led by Frankie Gavin on fiddle, flutes & whistles with Damien Mullane on accordion, Eric Cunningham on percussion, flutes & whistles, Mike Galvin on bouzouki & guitars and Michelle Lally on vocals. ‘Electrifying’ is an adjective that’s too often used to describe certain performances but this is one instance where it’s absolutely unavoidable. If you’ve never been lucky enough to see ‘Frankie Gavin & De Dannan’ perform live, prepare to be... shocked. “Frankie Gavin and De Dannan are the jewel in the crown, and as the musicians hit top gear some of the fast reels in particular are mesmerizing” – Carl Dixon, The Irish Examiner, August 2009

“Rightly heralded as the greatest Irish fiddler player, Frankie Gavin has nothing left to prove...Gavin is a true fiddleplaying genius, one who continues to inspire and dumbfound in equal measure” - The Scotsman

Storytelling, traditional glove puppetry and life sized puppets, Dog and String Theatre’s Tales from the Forest is inspired by two stories from the book Tales of Wisdom and Wonder by Hugh Lupton and Niamh Sharkey. Azal the artist introduces the audience to the landscape of the forest and, together with the help of our imaginations, we are taken on journey into a wooded environment. Greed is the central theme that unites these stories. Fish in the Forest addresses the issue with humour and cunning, whereas the story of the blind man and the hunter touches on some more profound lessons that children can learn. This show is suitable for children aged 4 –8 and their parents.

Nic and Jules (three-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening and four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore) are married and share a cozy suburban Southern California home with their teenage children, Joni and Laser. Nic and Jules gave birth to and raised their children. Now, as Joni prepares to leave for college, 15-year-old Laser asks her to help him find their biological father. Fresh from a 14th sell out year at the Edinburgh festival Jason Byrne takes his fringe show to all his favourite Irish venues and Riverbank Arts Centre is one such place. Jason Byrne is probably the most exciting live stand up performer in the world today and is now also the biggest selling comedian at the Edinburgh Fringe festival ... ever! Now that just sounds like a lie ... but it isn’t! Such is Jason’s popularity in Australia that this year he may have to spend at least 3 months there…so…this tour may be your only chance to see him in Ireland for quite some time! Apart from the rest of the world wanting him for all their very own, in the last few months alone he has completed the fifth series of ‘Anonymous’ (RTE2), The Wildside (BBC1), a third series of ‘The Jason Byrne Show’ (BBC Radio 2) and a new radio sitcom ‘Father Figure’ (BBC Radio 2).

‘A quick silver mind and a touch of madness make him one of the all time greats’ – Time Out. ‘An hour of stand up so joyous the clinically depressed should get it on prescription’ – Metro. ‘Jason Byrne is so good it hurts’ - Metro - *****

Frank & Catherine is an original play by the director of Crossfire Theatre, Eoin Gannon. Frank, played by local Kildare actor Allan Clarke, is having a very frustrating day and is thinking things that he probably shouldn’t be thinking – but that’s okay – it’s only thinking. Catherine, brought wonderfully to life by the intrepid actor Aine Lane, is a typical college student – full of the joys and insecurities of this stage of her life! Then, they meet? With humour, darkness, suspense, and a slight touch of insanity, Frank and Catherine has it all. Frank & Catherine is kindly supported by the Kildare County Council Arts Service. Zoe Rahman: piano/ Idris Rahman: clarinet / Oli Hayhurst: bass / Gene Calderazzo: drums After winning the ‘Perrier Young Jazz Musician of the Year’ Award in 1999, Zoe Rahman has quickly established herself as one of the brightest stars on the contemporary jazz scene. Her second album, Melting Pot, was nominated in 2006 for the Mercury Music Prize. More recently, she achieved an achingly beautiful fusion of jazz, classical and Bengali music in her highly-acclaimed album Where Rivers Meet, which featured arrangements of Nobel prizewinner Rabindranath Tagore’s music. Rahman’s willingness to push musical boundaries is matched by her technical brilliance. Noted for her inventiveness, explosive two-fisted technique, and the tumbling cascades of notes she often trades with her brother, the honey-toned clarinetist Idris Rahman, this mesmerising pianist is aided and abetted by a top-notch rhythm section featuring American drummer Gene Calderazzo and British bass player Oli Hayhurst. In the words of jazz reviewer Chris Parker, brace yourself for “all the punch, pith and sheer verve of the Rahman live act”. “Anyone who’s seen her live will be aware of an exceptional talent.” Mojo “Staggering….uplifting and majestic.” Snowboy, Blues and Soul Magazine

“A man loves his girlfriend the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest.” Old Irish Proverb. HIS & HERS IS A CINEMATIC MOSAIC THAT TELLS A 90-YEAR-OLD LOVE STORY THROUGH THE COLLECTIVE VOICE OF 70 LADIES AT DIFFERENT STAGES IN THEIR LIVES. The hallways, living rooms, and kitchens of the Irish midlands become the canvas for the film’s rich tapestry of female characters. The story unfolds sequentially from young to old, and the characters are charmingly unabashed; while the younger contributors are animated in discussing their relationships with their other halves, the older women describe their love, and often their bereft love, with grace and candor. His & Hers celebrates the ordinary moments that add up to the extraordinary. Individually each piece works on its own, but together they create an emotional portrait that explores the way we share life’s journey with others. “...touching and exquisitely made and never short of charm” The Irish Times “The essential Irish movie of 2010, bar none” Sunday Tribune “Elegantly formed, poetically shot and unexpectedly overwhelming. Impossibly charming, sweetly profound.” 4 stars Hot Press 15 2

Eddi Reader was brought into the limelight with Fairground Attraction and their single ‘Perfect’ and parent album First of a Million Kisses which both topped the British charts. However, it has been her subsequent solo albums which signalled her increasing ability to assimilate different musical styles and make them all very much her own. From the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi brings to joyous life all forms of song and what sets Reader apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance; her ability not only to move the listener but to connect her experience to that of her audience. Her rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism combine with an astute and pragmatic nature to make her a unique and powerful figure in contemporary British music. She has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. ‘This energetic singer gives perfect show’ The Scotsman Heidi Talbot Born in the village of Kill, Co. Having cut her teeth as lead singer with Irish American all-female outfit Cherish The Ladies, Heidi Talbot is right at home in the twin worlds of Irish traditional and roots music. Hailed a one of the finest dramas of our time, speaking to us of an entire era of life and death as no other play within memory, this play promises to enthrall. In its sweep and imagination, it defines the collapse of a moral universe during the Reagan years in an unforgettable way, transcending its specific time in the richness of its portrait of an America Lost, perhaps to be regained. Mr. Kushner’s epic sense of loss and betrayal and longed-for saving grace amounts to a fantastic journey of the heart and mind crying out against the disintegration of tolerance and cities and certain, eternal dreams. For Silken Thomas, the 2010 All Ireland Champions, it ranks as nothing less than one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century. Silken Thomas are a group at the cutting edge of Amateur Theatre. ChRONICles OF lONG Kesh

Time 8pm price €18/€16 A new play by Northern Ireland’s celebrated playwright Martin Lynch For three decades, Northern Ireland’s infamous prison – Long Kesh – was home to both Republicans and Loyalists, in an era of riots, hunger strikes and “The Troubles”. Martin Lynch’s dramatic portrayal of life on the inside tells a painful, shocking and poignant story of the day-to-day reality of history in the making. Time is marked with Motown classics, prison breaks are conducted under the cover of Smokey Robinson, and the stories are angry, devastating and, at times, hilarious. A huge crowd-pleaser, Chronicles of Long Kesh is told through the eyes of prison officers, Republicans and Loyalists, a rich assortment of patriots, chancers, leaders, wives, escapers and hypochondriacs! Full of 1960’s Motown songs and wild, irreverent humour, this is the inside story of The Troubles. PLEASE NOTE: this production contains strong language and themes of an adult nature and as such is deemed unsuitable for those under the age of 16. “… ripping theatre” “A Must--See!” Sunday Times “… superb performances work an unshowy magic…” The Guardian “….directed with tremendous pace, gusto and conviction...” whatsonstage.com

Dir: Marc Webb / USA /2009 / 95 mins / Cert: 15A Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Geoffrey Arend, Matthew Gray Gubler, Chloe Moretz Tom is an architect by training, a romantic by nature and a “perfectly adequate” greeting-card writer by trade. He meets Summer—the sexy, quirky dream girl who doesn’t believe in love—when she takes a job in his office. This is Day 1 of their 500 days together, and if the set up sounds predictable, veteran music-video director Marc Webb does much to turn this tale on its head. With a soundtrack that includes the Smiths, Belle and Sebastian and current punks Black Lips, there’s a lot to love here, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel sizzle onscreen. 500 Days of Summer is a slickly made anti-romantic comedy that happens to have plenty of romance and lots of comedy. Dir: Sebastián Silva / Chile / 2009 / 96 mins / Cert: Club Starring: Catalina Saavedra, Claudia Celedón, Mariana Loyola, Andrea García-Huidobro, Alejandro Goic, Agustín Silva Language: Spanish Raquel has been working for the wealthy Valdés family since she was 18. During that time she has become a nanny to five children and a tireless maid from morning till night. Aside from debilitating migraines and the illusion that she is perceived as part of the family, life has given her nothing. Her poorly concealed bitterness and increasing conflicts with the eldest Valdés daughter lead the lady of the house to the conviction that her current “jill-of-all-trades” is overworked. But surprisingly, her decision to hire extra help rubs Raquel the wrong way... Does the exhausted domestic truly not need any help or is she just trying, by hook or by crook, to maintain the exclusivity of her dubious standing within the bosom of the family? In the intersection between social and human pressures, the director gently depicts the modern form of serfdom which yet lingers in aristocratic Latin American families. TuesdAy FeBRuARy 22Nd

Dir: Brendan Muldowney / Ireland / 2009 / 83 mins / Cert: 18 Starring: Darren Healy, Nora-Jane Noone, Ryan Andrews, Karl Argue, Marisa Armstrong, Cathy Belton Language: English A stark representation of Ireland’s violent underbelly, Savage follows the story of Paul, who after becoming the victim of a humiliating and brutal street attack descends into a disturbed cycle of paranoia and violence, building to a bloody, shocking and vengeful conclusion. A fresh take on the revenge thriller, Savage explores the dark subject of the psychological damage of violence. Menacing and socially poignant, Savage is as disturbing as it is thought provoking, and its brutal climax is definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Dir: Mike Leigh / UK / 2010 / 129 mins / Cert: 12A Starring: Jim Broadbent, Lesley Manville, Ruth Sheen, Peter Wight, Oliver Maltman, David Bradley, Karina Fernandez, Martin Savage Language: English Mike Leigh’s gentle yet powerful new film about family, friendship and ageing is a compassionate and considered work, balancing humour alongside its more melancholic notes. Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri (Ruth Sheen) are a goodhearted couple sliding towards old age. As they potter around their allotment or cook curries for their friends, the only remarkable thing about them is how contented they are. But two of their friends don’t share their good fortune: Mary (Lesley Manville), a work colleague of Gerri’s who bemoans her disastrous love life and drinks too much to try and keep up a cheerful front, and Tom’s old mate Ken (Peter Wight), equally lonely and unhappy, and trying desperately to stay afloat. The film unfolds over four seasons, an accumulation of encounters and mostly small events that highlight Leigh’s skill in taking the fabric of everyday life and turning it into something resonant and meaningful. Dir: Samuel Moaz / Israel / 2009 / 93 mins / Cert: 15A Starring: Yoav Donat, Itay Tiran, Oshri Cohen, Michael Moshonov, Zohar Strauss, Dudu Tassa, Ashraf Barhom and Reymonde Amsellem Language: Hebrew The First Lebanon War, June, 1982. A lone tank and a platoon of paratroopers are dispatched to search a hostile town that has been bombarded by the Israeli Air Force. The mission gets out of control and turns into a death trap. Night falls and the wounded troops remain trapped in the center of a town in ruins, unable to communicate with the central command and surrounded by Syrian commandos closing in on all sides. The film’s heroes are the tank crew: Shmulik the gunner, Assi the commander, Herzl the loader and Yigal the driver, four 20 year old boys, operating a killing machine. They are not courageous war heroes, eager for battle or self-sacrifice. All they have is a terrible fear of death

Dir: Daniel Alfredson / Sweden / 2009 / 148 mins / Cert: 16 Starring: Noomi Rapace, Michael Nyqvist, Annika Hallin, Per Oscarsson, Lena Endre, Peter Andersson Language: Swedish Now this run of adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s novels is concluded it feels like a self-contained film (Millennium: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) followed by one long movie split in two. This picks up from a nearcliffhanger, the heroine traumatised after being shot in the head and buried alive. Unusually for a trilogy, this set offers three different styles: Dragon Tattoo is a leisurely mystery, Played With Fire is an action thriller, and Hornets’ Nest is a paranoid conspiracy tale with courtroom drama thrown in.

Sosuke’s father, Koichi is the captain of a freighter and spends most of his life at sea; his mother Lisa works at a day care centre for the elderly, and Sosuke attends its school.
