The Big Picture

Be part of an exciting and major new development of Riverbank Arts Centre

Artist’s Impression

This year, Riverbank Arts Centre was delighted to be awarded a substantial grant from the Department of Arts to make major improvements to the facilities here at the centre. We were extremely proud to be selected as one of the Department’s flagship projects- one of two centres in the country to receive the top award of €1m- and grateful of the matching support we have received from Kildare County Council. For the past number of years, the team at Riverbank Arts Centre has been working hard to present a high quality programme that reaches and serves the broad and diverse community in Kildare and surrounding areas. We’ve been particularly focused on delivering an excellent arts experience for young audiences from babies and toddlers through to secondary school students and families. The grant we’ve been awarded will help to significantly improve the facilities in the venue in terms of seating comfort, accessibility and capacity as well improvements to the stage size, allowing us to attract larger scale productions. It’s a fantastic opportunity to greatly enhance the experience that you as an audience member will have.

3 However, we’d like to go a leap further and dramatically transform the ways in which people can access arts experiences and how you interact with the centre. We have a masterplan or future vision which would bring the centre’s entrance down to ground level for ease of access and greater connection with the community. It would provide a dedicated children’s gallery, a large workshop space for outreach and education programmes, large visual arts space while greatly enhancing the streetscape of Newbridge. This development would also include a universal adult changing facility, making the centre fully user-friendly for performers and patrons of all physical abilities. It would allow Riverbank Arts Centre to become visible as a flagship cultural hub in Kildare. This season we’re inviting you to support us in our goal to achieve this major transformation and join us on this exciting and ambitious journey

How you can support the project: Every donation made to Riverbank Arts Centre, big or small, will help us get closer to achieving our goal. We’re asking patrons, where possible, to consider making a voluntary donation at the time of purchase. For self-employed individuals or businesses looking to donate more, Riverbank Arts Centre CLG is a registered charity meaning tax relief may be given by Revenue. Full details of ways to help Riverbank Arts Centre available on riverbank.ie/support-us

What we’d like to achieve: A universally accessible arts centre – ease of access, comfort and participation for performers and patrons of all physical abilities A dedicated workshop space to carry out a greater number and type of workshops for young people and adults. Allowing us the opportunity to dramatically increase our education and outreach programme, particularly for primary and secondary schools. A larger purpose-designed Children’s gallery space Greater capacity for seminar and conference facilities Transformation of the streetscape in Newbridge, allowing for greater visibility and increased connection with the town and county.

Second Harvest An exhibition of Irish Artists, curated by Newbridge Local History Group

friday 28th august – friday 15th september mckenna gallery An exhibition of Kildare artists inspired by the Peat land Landscape. Featuring the work of Monica de Bath, Pamela de Bri, Fiona Marron, Annette McCormack, Eileen Keane, Eamonn Keenan, Brian O’Loughlin, and Conor Lane. Peat lands are a significant and unique component of the environment of Ireland, and they have played a major role in the development of our art, our culture and our customs. Peat lands are places of solitude, reflection and retreat; places of sanctuary for endangered ecosystems; and places of employment. This exhibition attempts to offer the community a “Second Harvest” from peat lands. An Artistic Harvest. The “Harvest” is presented in a variety of forms and media, as each artist has uniquely interpreted different aspects of peat lands, seeing them as a raw material, as a workplace, as a landscape, and as an inspiration. Part of the Creative Well’s ‘This must be the place’ residency at Riverbank Arts Centre.

The Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda is well known for his sublime love poems. But this film brings to the foreground Neruda’s political poetry. It begins in 1948, immediately before Neruda (played by Luis Gnecco) has to go into hiding: he has publicly condemned the Chilean president Gabriel González Videla. As a communist and senator, Neruda is driven from both the Senate and his home and must flee with his wife. Police detective Oscar Peluchonneau is trying to apprehend them. Be-Longing by Marta Golubowska

friday 22nd september - wednesday 25th october mckenna gallery The project ‘Be-Longing’ is a result of feelings of alienation and isolation that I have experienced as a result of moving away from the country of my birth. It is an exploration of the everyday experience of building a new identity and putting down roots in a country, language and culture that is unfamiliar and foreign to me. I am particularly interested in the links between identity and people’s homes, their community and their language and how the boundaries of identity are altered when your affiliation with these fundamental elements is fractured. My artwork is primarily collaborative and involves shared experiences with the people around me. This is not an accident; rather it is fundamental to my work as the act of creating my art is simultaneously an attempt to create a space for myself within my new social and cultural context.

cinema

monday 25 september time: 8pm | tickets: €6 (Advanced) /€9 th

Finland’s master of deadpan comedy, Aki Kaurismäki (Lights in the Dusk, Le Havre), returns with the story of an unlikely friendship between a Syrian asylum seeker and an elderly Finnish restaurant owner. Winner of the Berlin Silver Bear for Best Director, it’s a beautiful, timely film from one of the world’s leading auteurs. Khaled (Sherwan Haji) arrives at the port of Helsinki concealed in a coal container, fleeing war-torn Syria to seek asylum in Finland. With hilarious sight gags, poker-faced one liners and a toe-tapping rockabilly soundtrack, Kaurismäki’s latest balances his unparalleled wit with a pressing critique of the unforgiving bureaucracy that greets vulnerable asylum seekers in modern-day Europe. Humane and sincere, it’s proof of cinema’s power to tell stories that matter, with beauty and heart. The Beguiled

cinema

monday 2 october time: 8pm | tickets: €6 (Advanced) /€9 nd

Sophia Coppola won the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival for this film in which she crafts an atmosphere of dreaminess and softness, where repressed desires surface in this Southern Gothic tale of female sexual jealousy. Set in 1864 during the American Civil War in the sun-dappled state of Virginia, a wounded Union soldier (Colin Farrell) is given shelter within an allfemale boarding school. His allure soon awakens sexual feelings in Marta (Nicole Kidman), Edwina (Kirsten Dunst) and Alicia (Elle Fanning). Placing the seven women of the boarding house and their potent desires at it centre, The Beguiled builds to a deadly conclusion. With vivid and invested performances, Coppola has crafted a sumptuously provoking film. Follow CBeebies Patrick Lynch as he uses a pioneering mix of live cinema and theatre to take you on a thrilling ride across the magical world of ancient Greece. With miniature sets he directs the lights, camera and action in front of your eyes to show the famous battles, floating islands, one-eyed giants and angry Gods that make up Ulysees’ 20 year struggle to get back home. The use of multiple cameras magnifies in wide screen our table-top puppetry down to the smallest detail, turning a storm-in-a-teacup into an Aegean tempest, laying out the fundamental fable hidden in this classic of world-literature and proving that no matter how far you roam, there’s no place like Homer.

It is a misogynist oppression as all-pervasive as the smog that settles everywhere on the city. Toxic air puts an elderly woman in hospital with doctor’s orders to leave the city for cleaner climes. Someone must move north with her, and her family soon decide that her unmarried, childless daughter Niloofar (Sahar Dolatshahi) will be the one to go. Niloofar, a smart, attractive hardworking woman who has made a success of her tailoring business, is never consulted. monday 4th december time: 8pm | tickets: €6 (Advanced) /€9 Frantz finds writer-director François Ozon thoughtfully probing the aftermath of World War I through the memories and relationships of loved ones left behind. Set in Germany and France in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, Frantz recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war’s “lost generation”: Anna, a bereft young German woman whose fiancé, Frantz, was killed during trench warfare, and Adrien, a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man. What follows is a surprising exploration of how Ozon’s characters’ wrestle with their conflicting feelings. Set against the backdrop of a defeated Germany, a powerful anti war messages reverberates throughout the film.
