Riverbank Arts Centre: Focus On Illustration

Since 2009, we’ve worked with numerous illustrators to bring each season to life with a unique cover. From 2009 to 2016, we worked with the wonderful Brian Coldrick, who created an exciting and different cover each season without fail - 24 illustrations in fact! In 2016 we decided to open up the illustration to other artists, as a means to showcase the talents of Irish or Irish based artists. Since then we’ve worked with Peter Donnelly, Sadie Kramer, Shona Shirley MacDonald, Fintan Taite, Holly Pereira and Dermot Flynn. This season we commissioned multimedia artist Anne Marie Morrin, whose exhibition Keywords, a reflection on childhood recollections of school days in 1980s, takes place in our Children’s Gallery from Nov 7. See page 31.

Creative well The Creative Well Shared Open Studio is an inclusive space for adults interested in visual art. At the weekly sessions, an experienced facilitator is on hand to support participants to follow their own creative journey and work in whatever experimental ways they wish. We cater for complete beginners, practising artists or those in the middle. Perhaps you are just interested in visual arts and need a place to be, to create and to meet other artists in the county. We invite you to book a session in the studio. This is an open and ongoing visual arts project that allows participants to attend when their schedule allows. First autumn session is on the 10th September. There is no cost to attend these sessions. Contact Emma Finucane for more details: thecreativewellkildare@gmail.com or 087 1211069

our other work Welcome to our Autumn programme - the leaves are falling, school bags are packed, and we have over 80 performances, screenings, exhibitions, gigs, workshops and literary events for the season ahead. Riverbank Arts Centre is evolving into a central hub for arts and creativity for county Kildare; a place where arts and culture become a real and tangible thing, accessible to everyone in our community. We are also busy behind the scenes, expanding and developing our programme, partnerships, and support structure for artists, audiences, and community alike. The following is a glimpse of some of these projects and collaborations:

Things We’ve been Doing: We are active members of three touring/producing networks - Nomad, Strollers and Shortworks - which enable us to bring the best of Irish and international work to Riverbank Arts Centre. In November, we are thrilled to present the internationally acclaimed Australian company Slingsby, with their captivating performance for young audiences, The Young King. This dazzling production is part of Dublin Theatre Festival 2018 and travels to Riverbank Arts Centre with the support of the Shortworks network. We’re currently co-producing The Lonely Beast, a brand new show for young audiences based on Chris Judge’s much-loved book, in collaboration with author Sarah Webb and a team of leading theatre artists. Watch this space! We are also developing numerous community outreach and education programmes including Home Is Where The Art Is II, a collaborative youth-led project, matching professional artists with schools and youth groups across Kildare to encourage and foster creativity. This culminated in an exhibition in our Children’s Gallery as part of JuneFest.

our other work Things we’re Supporting: We’re supporting the development of Sing me to the Sea by Anna Newell, a hydropool adventure for children with PMLD, in partnership with Wicklow Arts Office, Enable Bray, and Enable Naas/West Wicklow. Riverbank Arts Centre is happy to welcome the innovative Collapsing Horse theatre collective for a residency.in 20181019. Supported by The Arts Council and Kildare County Library and Arts Service, the residency will comprise a series of intergenerational storytelling and folklore workshops in libraries and the research and creation of a new work, A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings, based on a short story by Gabriel García Márquez. We are delighted to continue to provide support Kildare Youth Theatre, Griese Youth Theatre, NT Connections for Youth Theatres and The Past Times Community Choir among others.

Partnerships Throughout 2018 we continue to work with Institute of Technology Tallaght, Words Ireland, Access Cinema, Fighting Words, Children’s Books Ireland, Irish Film Institute, National Gallery of Ireland, and many other cultural organisations with a common goal - bringing the best of arts and creativity to our community.

THE BIG PICTURE We’re progressing our plans for the exciting and major new development of Riverbank Arts Centre. Having secured a capital grant from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and matched funding from Kildare County Council we are now progressing with our plans to redevelop Riverbank Arts Centre.

Phases: Project Manager Appointment Design Team Appointment Tender for Construction Redevelopment Commencement Completion HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE PROJECT: Every donation made to Riverbank Arts Centre, big or small, will help us get closer to achieving our goal. We’re asking businesses and patrons, where possible, to consider making a voluntary donation at the time of purchase. For self-employed individuals or businesses looking to donate more, Riverbank Arts Centre CLG is a registered charity meaning tax relief may be given by Revenue Commissioners. Full details of ways to help Riverbank Arts Centre available on riverbank.ie/support-us Want to get up to date information on the project? Join our E-Zine here: https://www.riverbank.ie/e-zine/

The Great Work of Preserving a practical continuation Exhibition by Brenda Kearney

Saturday 1st September - Saturday 13th October 2018 McKenna Gallery

visual arts

‘I spend my time at the great work of preserving. Memory, as well as fruit, is being saved from the corruption of the clocks’ The Great Work of Preserving takes its title from a thesis of the same name, written last year to explore ideas of skill, knowledge and creativity in traditional food practices. It also asks how we consider and value this work - and how its value changes in the world at large. This exhibition, a practical development of the thesis, takes a cosmos of ideas as starting points - the jumbled ethnographic museum, old obsessions with curiosity cabinets and collections, folk objects and folk crafts, and the ever-enduring appeal of edible stuff. Through a variety of work (some edible), the show considers which processes, objects and ideas we seek to preserve, and why. The exhibition is supported by 2017 Kildare Arts Service and Riverbank Arts Centre Emerging Visual Artist Award Join us for the exhibition opening and some light snacks - preserved and fermented ingredients included - on Sep 1st at 4pm

C’est La Vie!

Monday 10th September, 8pm €6 (Early Bird) / €9 Max is a veteran wedding planner who is thinking about selling on his business. For now, however, there’s something more pressing to worry about: organising a lavish wedding in a 17th century chateau. Can Max and his team sort everything out without the guests noticing? The latest film from Untouchable directors Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano is a gloriously manic French comedy. It hits the ground running and barely takes a breath as wedding disaster after disaster unfolds. With larger-than-life characters and laughout-loud set pieces, C’est La Vie! is a delight. What Good is Looking Well When You’re Rotten On The Inside? Friday 14th September, 8pm €15/€12

One month before his death, retired civil servant and man of few words Paddy O’Grady had a sudden urge to talk. Using a portable cassette tape recorder, he recorded 15 hours of stories about leprechauns, aliens and lonely pharmacists; absurdist political satire; musings on life, love and death.

Paddy’s granddaughter, Emma O’Grady, later discovered he had written plays, poems and stories but until now his work has been without an audience. This one-woman show – created with multiple directors examines the fragile personas we present to the world, who we might be behind them and what we could be instead. This show is about emotional inheritance and grief for wasted creativity that serves as both a tribute and a warning.

Message of Peace

Saturday 15th September, 8pm €14/€12 This is a deeply moving, engaging and remarkable story of a lesser-known, Irish hero John Boyle O’Reilly (1844-1890); in both spoken word and song, mapping his life and work. Pickled with Sean Tyrrell’s own observations on our own times and condition, leaving no doubt as to the passion, respect and high esteem in which he holds his all time hero. A man whose poems are as relevant now as they were when first written the title poem and song being a perfect example. Tracing his journey from early childhood, set against a backdrop of famine, revolution, and penal servitude for life in Australia.

This witty and moving monologue is performed by Joe Brown and directed by Peter Hussey.

workshop When six year old Frida’s mother dies from AIDS related pneumonia, she moves from her life in Barcelona to her Uncles Catalonian farm. This new family and her landscape are alien to Frida; she’s afraid of the chickens, she doesn’t know the difference between a lettuce and a cabbage and she has a new, adoring, annoying little sister. While her family’s warmth and love are abundant, their attempts to protect her only increase Frida’s bewilderment and isolation. This autobiographical first feature explores Frida’s conflicting emotions as she struggles to process her losses and adjust to her new life. The performances of the two children are disarmingly vulnerable and natural in this gorgeous, yet unsentimental film about a child navigating grief.
