Moonfish Theatre Residency Theatre as you’ve never experienced it before!
Moonfish Theatre have been toiling away in their theatre making workshop these past few months and we are delighted that the time has finally come for their very first production with us as our theatre company in residence! And what a treat they have in store. Take one mobile library, fill with stories, performance, imagination, all kinds of theatrical tricks and surprises, mix in some local 1916 history and you’ve got Moonfish’s brand new show for families and schools, especially commissioned by Riverbank Arts Centre and Kildare Library Services. We can’t wait to see what magic awaits inside the big blue bus - don’t miss your chance to find out too! See page 12 for details. Moonfish will also be offering curious theatre fans the chance to find out how the magic happens, with a very special backstage workshop, where participants will learn some of the secrets of theatre making. In addition to this Moonfish will be learning more about immersive theatre this year at Riverbank Arts Centre. Stay tuned to find out what they discover... Moonfish Theatre are Theatre Artists in Residence at Riverbank Arts Centre with support from the Arts Council and Kildare County Council Library & Arts Service.
Comhlacht teatair conaithe: Moonfish Theatre will also continue to support the staff at Riverbank in improving our Irish through the Ionad ag Foghlaim scheme. We’re learning Irish through Duolingo. If you’d like to join us, Duolingo is a free languagelearning app which only takes a second to download. You can also keep an eye on our website and social media pages for videos and updates on how we are getting on. Visit us here in the box office and pick up one of our leaflets for information on local resources for learning and improving your Irish. We will also have simple expressions for you to access if you want to use your cúpla focal when ordering tickets. Or why not attend Moonfish’s new bilingual production in April or their friends from Galway, Branar Theatre’s new bilingual production for families: Maloney’s Dream. Both productions are completely accessible to non-Irish speakers and a great way to see how much Irish you already know! Beidh Moonfish ag leanacht ar aghaidh ag tabhairt tacaíocht do fhoireann an Riverbank lena cuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú leis an scéim Ionad ag Foghlaim. Táimíd ag foghlaim na Gaeilge tríd úsáid a bhaint as Duolingo, ‘app’ a mhuineann duit conas teangacha a labhairt. Má tá suim agat do chuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú is féidir Duolingo a íoslódáil saor in aisce, agus ní thógann sé ach cúpla soicind. Is féidir súil a choimead chomh maith ar ár suíomh idirlín agus leathanacha mheáin shóisialta, le feiceáil conas atá ag éirigh linn. Buail isteach againn anseo ag an oifig ticéad agus pioc suas ceann dár mbileoga eolais faoi achmhainní áitiúla chun Gaeilge a fhoghlaim agus a fheabhsú. Tá ráiteasaí simplí ar fáil freisin le cabhrú leat do chúpla focal a úsáid nuair atá ticéid á cheannach agat. Nó is féidir leat freastal ar an seó nua dhá-theangach le Moonfish a bheidh anseo i Mí Aibreáin, nó ar an seó nua dhá-theangach le Branar Téatar: Brionglóid Maloney. Tá an dá léiriú go hiomlán áisiúil do dhaoine nach bhfuil Gaeilge acu agus mar sin is bealach maith é fiosrú cé mhéid Gaeilge atá agat cheana féin!

Pangur Ban Presents: Tom McIntyre’s
the gallant john joe PERFORMED BY TOM HICKEY
time: 8pm tickets: €18/€12
fri 1st apr
After a hugely successful revival at the Peacock Theatre last year, one of the theatrical events of the year is coming to a town near you for a very special performance. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the internationally treasured, Tom Hickey perform his celebrated role in Tom MacIntyre’s The Gallant John Joe. It is the soliloquy of a Cavan widower grappling with increasing physical and mental infirmity. What keeps him on his feet is his capacity to tell stories, to make a story out of anything that moves, using language as a crutch, ointment, talisman, intoxicant. Tom Hickey’s work is extensive- creating leading roles in new Irish drama written by the foremost Irish playwrights including Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Marina Carr, Frank McGuinness.

Handel in Ireland, is Caitríona O’Leary and Dúlra’s celebration of Handel’s sojourn in Ireland in 1742 and presents Irish music of the time, songs and dances the composer may have heard, and Handel’s compositions re-imagined by some of the world’s leading traditional and world music stars. Near the end of his stay he travelled to Cork. He stayed in the great houses and would have been entertained by local musicians. Fred (Michael Caine), a retired composer and conductor, and Mick (Harvey Keitel), a film director, are old friends and also in-laws through the marriage of their respective daughter and son. The two are spending their summer at a luxury Swiss Alps spa, but while Fred is dodging requests from England for him to come out of retirement and perform his greatest work, Mick is struggling to complete his “comeback” film, which is to star his favourite actress Brenda (Jane Fonda). Once again Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty) skilfully uses his actors to present a stylish, funny film of great emotional depth, exploring themes of life experiences and aging, with Caine in particular in sparkling form. An Alpine study of ageing and creativity that’s as fresh and bracing as the mountain air, although occasionally just as chilly.- Empire Magazine Director: Paolo Sorrentino | 118 minutes | Italy | 2015 | 15A

Much like when making a storybook, you must first plan out what is going to happen in your story and have an idea of what this will look like. In this illustration and design workshop Illustrator, Sarah Whelan, will give participants an introduction to designing characters as well as a brief introduction to storyboards. Participants will design a character and tell a story considering the composition, image sequence and visual language. Once the workshop is complete you take your storyboard home and who knows maybe one day you’ll see your idea on the big screen!

thu 21st apr
“Did that play of mine send out certain men the English shot?” - W.B. Yeats Dublin, 24 April 1916. Ireland’s leading actors abandon a matinee of Cathleen Ni Houlihan. Stepping out of their costumes and taking their revolvers from beneath the Abbey stage, they march to Dublin Castle. Firing the first shots of the insurrection they destroyed the status quo and changed forever the course of Irish history. Helena Molony and Sean Connolly rehearsed for rebellion, carried out rebellion and suffered the fatal and living conquesences of their participation. Derived from real-life testimonies, Rebel Rebel chronicles the finite moments when the play (which more than any other symbolised the link between the cultural revival and the Irish revolution) spilled revolution from the stage onto the streets, leading to his fatal shooting and dying in her arms on the roof of City Hall. Directed by Louise Lowe | Performed by Robbie O’Connor and Aisling O’Mara

It presents the compelling story of Michael Collins, but also the story of his biographer, the literary genius Frank O’Connor. As The Big Fellow is conjured to unruly and mischievous life by his writer, the epic tale of the birth of a nation is re-lived by both men: the one who survived it and came to understand the disappointment that inevitably follows the dream, and the tragic hero who perished in his effort to broker a waking compromise.

Four Decades. Two Brothers. One Really Big Grudge. Gummi (Sigurdur Sigurjónsson) and Kiddi (Theodór Júlíusson) are brothers. They have both dedicated their lives to tending sheep and their farms are next door to each other. But they have not spoken in over 40 years, a feud that has reduced any necessary communication between them to be carried out via written messages delivered by Kiddi’s dog. However when one of their sheep contracts a contagious disease, the livelihood of the brothers and the entire rural community they are a part of comes under threat. Can the brothers set aside their differences under the circumstances? Writer-director Hakonarson beautifully captures the tragicomic plight of the brothers against the stark beauty of the Icelandic valleys to deliver a charming and moving drama. László Nemes’ stunning debut feature takes its title from central character Saul, a Hungarian-Jewish prisoner at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp who, in his job as a Sonderkommando, is forced to assist in the grisly day-to-day management of mass exterminations. When Saul witnesses a young boy briefly surviving the gas chamber, he becomes determined to give the child a proper Jewish burial. First-time actor Géza Röhrig provides the focal point for the film as Saul - the camera rarely strays from his character while he negotiates the intricate workings of the camp in an attempt to carry out this dangerous quest. It’s from here that Richard Lynch cuts deep into the heart of the Association, the Club, with his new play. It’s one that digs deep into G.A.A. passions, written in his own unique style. A split within a G.A.A. Club in the 1950’s leads to the formation of a second Club in the parish. A bitter father and son conflict relating to the infamous ‘Ban’ on foreign games ensues. As the Club prepare to celebrate the opening of their new State of the Art Clubhouse, Sonny Halpin, now in his sixties, lays bare much of the Club’s history in an effort to bury the ghosts of the past that continually haunt him.
Contemporary Circus Double Bill:
‘the whistle’ Squarehead Productions ‘tale of the ancient lights’ Riuchi time: 8pm tickets: €15/€12 | family: €40
fri 24th jun
‘Tales of the unseen’ is an irresistibly charming double bill that brings together the works of award winning circus companies ‘Riuchi’ and ‘Squarehead Productions’: Two very different pieces on the same evening, one immersing the audience in an old asian tale, the other creating quirky abstract narratives in a minimal setting. What both shows have in common is the play with live special effects: while Riuchi uses varying components from classic magic techniques, to body effects and new technology, Squarehead Productions creates the illusion of time travel, glitches, déjà vu and stop motion effects by making the audience open and close their eyes. These skillfully performed pieces take the audience on a journey through imaginary realms and create poetic science fiction on stage.

sat 25th jun
Create your own folk art style painting, inspired by animals, nature and patterns, in a workshop with artist Orla Barry. Enjoy a relaxed lesson in drawing and painting with acrylics. We will play with mixing colours as we pick a favourite animal and put it in an imaginary scene. Following this we will also be gluing on patterned papers as part of the picture to make a mixed media work of art. Make your own masterpiece ready to frame. Folk art is a fun, highly decorative style with bold bright colours and flattened perspectives.
the brand new testament time: 8pm tickets: €6
mon 27th jun
God (Benoît Poelvoorde) is a bad-tempered man who lives in a run-down Brussels flat with his wife and young 10-year-old daughter Ea. He takes delight in inflicting misery on humanity on a daily basis with a system of vindictive rules. When Ea decides she has had enough of her father’s pettiness, she escapes and sets out to recruit six apostles, who will help her write a new bible based on their “gospels”. The latest film from Belgian director Jaco Van Dormael (Toto the Hero, Mr. Nobody) is a highly original but irreverent black comedy, that manages to encompass religious satire, laugh-out-loud humour and an optimistic vision of humankind.

declan o’rourke time: 8pm tickets: €20
sat 2nd jul
Declan O’Rourke has achieved critical acclaim for his songwriting, singing and performance. Jon Pareles of The New York Times said there was virtuosity in his guitar playing, with ‘intricately contrapuntal picking and meticulous dynamics,’ and that his calling was as a balladeer. Paul Weller said of O’Rourke’s song ‘Galileo’ that it’s possibly the greatest song written in the last thirty years. Declan plays to sold-out crowds in his native Ireland and, more recently, further afield.
music
A consummate and versatile performer, his songs mesmerize regardless of whether performed solo, with a band, string quartet, full orchestra, or as a trio. Declan is a prolific songwriter and has over one hundred songs worthy of potential release. Songs range from pop to big band, traditional ballads, country, and everything in between.

OFFICIAL LAUNCH FRIDAY 8TH JULY 7PM
borderland An exhibition of paintings by Eoin O’Malley fri 8th - sat 30th july The essence of Eoin O’Malley’s work as a painter is the energy he transmits in all of his images. Eoin’s source material is often found in the mountainous landscape around his home in Baltinglass Co. Wicklow but also in looking at astronomical phenomena and images of the world as seen from
above. The title work of this exhibition ‘Borderland’ reflects the place he has arrived in his journey as a painter and also alludes to his ambition for the future, that territory beyond the border moving on from the foundation he has built working steadily over the past eight years. Alongside the colourful, energetic and vibrant canvasses in this exhibition Eoin will also be showing some of his smaller work, no less exuberant but with the delicate touch and concentration brought by the use of brush and ink.
