The Theatre Lovett residency at Riverbank Arts Centre continues this spring with some exciting opportunities for their fine theatre practices to reach outside the building. This March, Theatre Lovett joins groups from Kildare Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland to share with them some of the tricks of the theatre trade. lUMIERE My DEAREsT DEAR Time 8pm price €15/€12 Lumiere’s debut album brought together two distinct voices cut from the same geographic cloth. One is Éilís Kennedy, whose sound has ready access to the soul without need for scaffolding or spotlights. The other half of the musical whole is Pauline Scanlon, an award-winning singer from the same Kerry town of Dingle. Since their debut launch, the duo have toured their distinctive sound from the cosy snugs of their native Dingle to international concert halls, and a worldwide audience has connected with their offering of real music by real singers communicating real emotions. As a duo, Lumiere takes something that is sacred and age old and re-imagines it simply and beautifully, reclaiming beauty, truth and trust, for the modern age. ‘familiar folk with a new twist’ Irish Music Magazine

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Deepa Mehta and based on Salman Rushdie’s Booker Prize-winning novel, Midnight’s Children is a generation-spanning fable that combines historical fiction with dark fantasy. Mehta’s most ambitious project yet, the film captures the epic scope of Rushdie’s work, serving as both a tribute to and a critique of Mehta’s native India. The story centres on Saleem Sinai, born at the stroke of midnight on the eve of India’s independence from Britain. As a child, Saleem discovers he has the power to communicate with the hundreds of children around the nation born that night, and that each of them possesses a magical power. This look at the history of India and Pakistan as illustrated through the journey of Saleem Sinai is an unquestionably engrossing tale and a visual treat.

With the rich imagination of children at play, they invent their world from the junk around them. Henry and Bucket are best pals, although sometimes you wouldn’t think so! Like all good friends they have their ups and downs, their battles and reconciliations, their shared adventures and at times their need for their own space. But as long as these two friends are together, transforming their rusty, dusty, battered and bockety world into a place of wonder, their adventures can take them anywhere! ‘The play is poetic, humorous and rich in narrative; an intriguing, thought-provoking exploration of friendship for young children’

The tree was a common site in many of our suburban gardens until the hard winters of 2010-11 when many of them died or were damaged, with their remains left standing, adding a monumental and memorial atmosphere in the garden. The work takes the tree as an open metaphor for issues concerning ecology, economics, globalisation and the colonialism. It also reflects on the relationship between nature and the earliest photographic experiments in the early 19th century.

One of the year’s best films has arrived quietly, unnoticed by the awards-season cheerleaders, but with its delicacy and complexity, it puts the Oscar-bait to shame and it has been more than worth the wait. ‘I wish’ is a deeply considered Japanese family drama – moving, sometimes heartbreakingly sad, often mysterious. The film is about the powerful imperative of family unity, but also about the inevitability, and even desirability, of families finally disintegrating and allowing everyone involved a painful kind of freedom.

Cate Shortland (Somersault) offers a unique perspective on the nature of collusion with this story of a young German girl who, at the end of WWII, leads her siblings through a devastated and defeated nation. Shortland’s attention to detail and the beauty of the imagery she creates in her account of a national psyche brainwashed to believe in their own supremacy, only to confront the horror that resulted, is filled with brilliance and surprise in equal measure. The Australian director Cate Shortland has made quite a stunning film about the collapse of Nazi Germany, seen not from a Berlin bunker but through the eyes of a 14-year-old girl whose SS father and mother, complicit in war atrocities, have disappeared to face the music. Saskia Rosendahl plays the lead, an unsympathetic character yet fiercely and fallibly human to her fingertips. This is an outstanding piece of work. The highly anticipated new drama from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine), powerfully explores the consequences of motorcycle rider Luke’s (Ryan Gosling) fateful decision to commit a crime to support his child. The incident renders him targeted by policeman Avery (Bradley Cooper), and the two men become locked on a tense collision course which will have a devastating impact on both of their families in the years following. This drama about morality, guilt and the long-range reverberations of the sins of the fathers, packs moments of searing power. While Gosling is essentially playing the two-wheel version of his Drive speed demon, the actor effectively conveys the pent-up hurt and lurking danger of a damaged man reaching clumsily for something good and pure.

Belfast, mid-seventies, and though the last thing you would advise someone to do is open a record shop on Great Victoria Street, that’s what former reggae lover Terri Hooley (Dormer) does when he discovers punk. Terri goes about flogging punk records to the kids and, when approached by local bands, starts the record label Good Vibrations, signing the likes of Rudi, The Outcasts and The Undertones. Terri Hooley is a radical, rebel and music-lover in 1970s Belfast when the bloody conflict known as the Troubles shuts down his city. Galvanising the young musicians into action, he becomes the unlikely leader of a motley band of kids and punks who join him in his mission to create a new community, an Alternative Ulster, to bring his city back to life.
