Riverbank Arts Centre: Focus On Illustration Never judge a book by it’s cover, or so the phrase goes. We like to think differently! Every single season Riverbank Arts Centre commissions a new illustration to adorn the cover. We started the process with the fantastic illustrator, Brian Coldrick, who created 24 unique covers over an 8 year period. For our new series, we are commissioning a different artist each season. Already we’ve worked with Peter Donnelly and Sadie Cramer. You can see all our unique illustrations and read more information about the illustrators on riverbank.ie/cover

This Must Be the Place The Creative Well arts and well-being project continues its residency in Riverbank Arts Centre throughout 2017. The Creative Well visual arts programme of work aims to build and support wellbeing and rich life experiences by encouraging adults to engage with their creativity through visual art. As part of this residency The Creative Well and Riverbank Arts Centre has opened McKenna Gallery to explore the permeable nature of the gallery as a space and place for making, discussion, encountering and exhibition. McKenna Gallery will be utilised not only as a place to see wonderful artworks but also a place where people can engage with their own creativity directly through a series of visual art workshops and artists talks open to all. We will also offer a series of opportunities for practicing artists to develop their work by using the gallery as a studio space for short periods. The Creative Well open studio will continue throughout 2017 providing space on an ongoing basis for individuals to develop their own arts practice and a specific project. Open studio participants have been working with the Creative Well for a number of years however spaces are available for further participants in 2017. Printmaking workshop

Without the words An exhibition of works by members of Illustrators Ireland
sat 4th march - sat 22nd april mckenna gallery and children’s gallery Without the Words is an exhibition inspired by a line from Emily Dickinson’s well loved poem Hope is the Thing with Feathers as well as Laureate na nÓg PJ Lynch’s “The Big Picture”. While Dickinson reminds her readers to always have hope, Lynch promotes visual storytelling and the power of imagination. Imagination and hope make a powerful combination. In most circumstances an illustrator will respond to a brief which is communicated either through written or spoken word. As supporters of visual literacy Illustrators Ireland propose to tell our visual stories, putting the pictures first- without the words. Here we tell our stories; visually stimulating the imagination to respond by creating an individual narrative, not a prescribed story. With over 50 members’ work on exhibition, we invite you to find your own narratives within the original works, create your own stories from the pieces. It is your turn to respond to our brief; we invite everyone to sing the tune without the words.

Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye by Jim Nolan
saturday 1st april time: 8pm | tickets: €16/€14
theatre
Set in a provincial newspaper office in the Irish Midlands in the run up to Easter 2016, the privately owned Inishshannon Chronicle has just been acquired by a media conglomerate and the new brush is about to sweep clean. As the newspaper’s staff adjust to radical changes in its structure and ethos, the town it serves prepares to celebrate a tenuous connection to the Easter Rising. The revelation that this connection is not quite what it seems puts the Chronicle’s editor on a collision course with both his new bosses and the local business and political community.
‘Jim Nolan has an unapologetic affection for smalltown life. But it never blinds him to its dangers and its faults.’ Sunday Independent

on page 16
Set in October 1978 - Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat Farnon as he walks to town and back again. It is a beautifully observed piece, utterly simple and Murfi’s “astonishing acting” has been widely praised. The Man In The Woman’s Shoes is funny, tender and at times downright daft. You might just fall in love with life again. The show was originally created with Sligo County Council Arts Service and The Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo as part of the Bealtaine Festival 2012. In 2015 it toured to Manhattan and Philadelphia as well as a sell out, three week run at the Abbey Theatre on the Peacock stage in Dublin. In 2016 it returned to NYC and ran for three weeks at the Tricycle Theatre in London to standing ovations.

This complex tragedy of a powerful, but ignorant, king who is transformed by the loss of everything into becoming a simple man with nothing except his knowledge of himself and his empathy for his downtrodden people is often cited as Shakespeare’s finest play. It is the great play about homelessness, very relevant today as Ireland grapples with its housing crisis. It also has much to say about wisdom and power, especially in the light of recent political regime change across the western world. Directed by Peter Hussey, it features young actors from Kildare schools who are studying this text for their Leaving Cert in 2018.

hothouse flowers (acoustic) saturday 22nd july time: 8pm tickets: €30
music
Something amazing happens when Hothouse Flowers step onto the stage – something that has been shaped by over thirty years of singing and playing all over the world, yet no two shows have ever been the same! There is a sense of musical adventure - an impulse to reach new heights and depths in music where the unspoken aim is that the band and the audience become one and the world becomes a different place for a while. Hothouse Flowers were recently invited to be featured in the opening scene of Amazon Prime’s hugely successful The Grand Tour to perform their version of ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ for an invited audience in the Mojave Desert. I Can See Clearly Now then went to Number 1 in the UK iTunes Rock Charts… a mere 26 years after its first release!

This workshop combines the craft of classic “hand drawn” animating with modern technology. Participants work individually on concept art, plot structure and animating to create their very own unique short films which will then be collated and shared via Vimeo or YouTube. The course is primarily a practical one, with a very brief introduction to some animation theory in order to provide background and context. Students work on designated apps to create and edit their animations and we supply iPads for their use. Alternatively they can draw with paper, pens and pencils and their work can be photographed or scanned during the workshop The ability to draw is not a pre requisite and all levels are welcome.

friday 5 may | time: 2pm | tickets: €6 This complex tragedy of a powerful, but ignorant, king who is transformed by the loss of everything into becoming a simple man with nothing except his knowledge of himself and his empathy for his down-trodden people is often cited as Shakespeare’s finest play.
