September Welcome to Riverbank, September - December 2013
Hello and welcome. September always feels like a new start to the year with the back to school buzz and everyone glowing from the Summer break. We hope you’re well rested and ready to take part in this season’s packed programme which takes us all the way to Christmas. We’ve had a brilliant year so far, especially with Theatre Lovett around to share their wonderful talents with so many schools, local groups and children of all ages. A big, big thank you to all as the Theatre Lovett Residency draws to a close, but don’t worry, it won’t be the last you’ll see of them so keep an eye on the programme. In other children’s news, we have a seriously fun-filled season ahead with workshops, exhibitions, movies, crazy clowns, flying elves (yes, really!) and much more to enjoy. Don’t miss the mid-term Family Frenzy – a week of events to keep everyone happy. In the world of theatre, there’s so much to choose from…following the success of Tom Crean, outstanding performer Aidan Dooley returns with a new show in September, Red Kettle Theatre’s Beyond the Brooklyn Sky, Billy Roche’s The Cavalcaders, Fishamble and Colin Murphy’s return with the banking crisis drama Guaranteed and many more quality productions lie in store. There’s music from The Lost Brothers, This is How We Fly, The Fureys, Jack L; comedy with Pat Shortt and Faulty Towers; a great film line-up, visual arts….the list goes on. Look forward to seeing you here, from all the team at Riverbank Arts Centre In Person Box Office,Riverbank Arts Centre Main St., Newbridge Co. Our raft is right and ready and nestling among the river Liffey reeds. Theatre Lovett have packed away their things and soon will navigate their way home. The Riverbank Arts Centre has been a home for us this past year and we will miss the Newbridge smiles and twinkling eyes. Thank you to Linda, Hazel, Damian and the whole team here for your welcome and the way you folk work! It’s good! We have rehearsed two brand new shows here, workshopped with young and old on How Actors Play, visited Kildare Down Syndrome Association of Ireland in College Park, hopped on board Kildare Library’s mobile library and toured schools with stories, music and mystery. We have eaten deliciously and supped tea yummily in the cafe. We have chatted with staff and audiences alike. We salute you, we thank you and we will drop anchor again soon by the Newbridge riverbank.

dEclAN O’ROuRKE Time 8pm price €20 Declan O’Rourke was a latecomer to the Dublin singer-songwriter scene. In his mid-twenties, he discovered Dublin’s bustling songwriter open-mic circuit, he found himself in the mix with Paddy Casey, Gemma Hayes, Damien Rice and many other Irish singersongwriters. In 2004, Declan released his debut album, Since Kyabram. ‘Galileo (Someone Like You),’ his debut single, has been covered by numerous artists including Josh Groban, and performed by Paul Weller and Chris Rea. O’Rourke released his last album Mag Pai Zai on his own Rimecoat label in April ‘11. It held Ireland’s Top 10 Album Chart for four consecutive weeks. ‘A Little Something,’ the album’s debut single climbed to the no. 2 spot in the Today FM Top 40. Declan’s deep-honey voice and astute song writing abilities are not to be missed. “He writes the sort of classic songs that people don’t write anymore, songs that sound like they’ve been around forever… Galileo.. possibly the greatest song written in the last 30 years.” - Paul Weller, Mojo Magazine

Using the resources of the Kildare Local History Archive, artist Maeve Clancy creates a cut paper installation recounting the lives of people from the Newbridge area who were involved in world history. Beginning in the upstairs of the Riverbank and leading to the downstairs gallery, visitors can see, read and explore cut paper image and text artworks. Drawing on Newbridge’s strong military history, from the setting up of the modern town around the barracks to its citizens’ involvement in many famous conflicts around the world, this exhibition aims to engage a wider audience in the excellent research and local stories collected by the Kildare eHistory Journal. The individual personal stories give an insight to well known international events, making them less detached and more human.

Bearing similarities with The Sessions, it’s the loosely true story of three disabled men who embark on a trip to Spain in order to lose their virginity at a “specialist” brothel. The subject matter is ripe for crass gags or patronising sentimentality but succumbs to neither. Described as a “quartet with a difference” by the Irish Times, the Dublin Guitar Quartet is a one-of-a-kind classical guitar ensemble that occupies a unique space in the wider chamber music world. This October the Dublin Guitar Quartet will release a recording of Philip Glass’ string quartets on the composer’s own record label, Orange Mountain Music. This is a significant milestone for the quartet and is a culmination of many years work in developing and refining arrangements of Glass’ string quartets. Glass’ String Quartet No. 3, Mishima, was their first such transcription and they have added and refined the remaining quartets over recent years. “This is a very special arrangement. Arranging for guitars is a very tricky business and you really have to know what you are doing, so I have never done it, but Dave Flynn and Brian Bolger have made these arrangements and they’re really quite beautiful.” Philip Glass

Adapted & performed by Rebecca Vaughan, Directed by Guy Masterson From the company that brought you The Diaries of Adam and Eve… 1568: At a vital crossroads in history a young queen steps from the shadows to unburden herself of her many troubles and reveal her innermost thoughts on marriage, succession, religion, war, and the challenges to her throne. But time is against her... Elizabeth I: Queen at 25, political phoenix and famously unmarried, she was the most educated woman of her Age – but who was the woman beneath the crown? Using only Elizabeth’s words, solo performer Rebecca Vaughan (The Diaries of Adam and Eve, Female Gothic, Austen’s Women), explores the queen’s struggle to reconcile the desires of womanhood with the duties of sovereignty, in this sell-out Edinburgh hit. ***** ‘A truly breathtaking experience. An absolute masterclass. I can’t recommend this highly enough.’ (Fringe Review) There are a limited number of free seats for I, Elizabeth to celebrate Culture Night, call box office on 045 448327 to book now.

We have heard the name, now let this show bring him to life! The last Chieftain left standing after Kinsale against Queen Elizabeth! Using Celtic myths, an original score and brilliant storytelling, Aidan tells the true tale of how this heroic leader, of the Beara people, tried valiantly to save his clan against the vicious onslaught of the angry Tudor Queen intent on ensuring Ireland would never aid the Spanish again. In doing so, she destroyed the last celtic embers of Gaelic Ireland. Audiences won’t be disappointed! Dir: Jeff Nichols / 2012 / USA / 130 mins / Cert: 12A Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Sam Shepard Language: English Ellis and Neckbone are best friends approaching the twilight of their youth. While exploring, they stumble upon the hiding place of charismatic outlaw Mud, (played with controlled charm by a well-cast Matthew McConaughey), who takes a quick liking to the boys and recruits them to his cause: the search for true love and a clean getaway. Illustrating a vibrant imagination, sumptuous attention to detail, and a remarkable gift for extracting magnetic performances from a talented ensemble, Nichols hurtles us into the middle of a lush adventure, ensnaring the excitement every youngster feels when trouble lurks everywhere and anything is possible. Steeped in the vanishing myth of the Deep South, a place that Nichols dearly loves, Mud’s handcrafted vision shines through in each richly textured frame and proves a tall tale for the ages. - Sundance Film Festival 2012

This Is How We Fly is a contemporary folk band consisting of Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh on fiddle & hardanger fiddle, Seán Mac Erlaine on clarinets & live electronics, Nic Gareiss on percussive dance, and Petter Berndalen on drums and percussion. Individually, each member has carved out a reputation for not just mastering their chosen fields, but rising above, redefining and renewing the musical world they come from. The blend of these four individual musicians draws on Irish, Swedish and American music and dance traditions. This Is How We Fly approach their material flexibly as improvisers creating exhilarating live performances ranging from near silent renditions of Scandinavian fiddle tunes, to freely improvised tone poems with electronics to foot-stomping new compositions. “ Likely to tease your salivary ducts every bit as much as your pelvic girdle.” - The Irish Times

Joe Daly’s ‘Fantasmagorical’ is a children’s magic show like you have never seen before! It’s a roller coaster ride of hilarious magic and jaw dropping illusion that both kids and adults will love. Forget everything you think you know about children’s entertainment. This show re-invents it. With 3 appearances on ‘The Late Late Show’ with Pat Kenny dubbing him “magic” and “extremely skilled” and starring in his own adult illusion show ‘Magick Macabre’ in Dublin’s Olympia theatre for an entire month. Joe is the real deal when it comes to magic! Apart from all the brilliant magic tricks, the show is infused with animatronics, special effects and illusion. It’s laugh out loud funny one minute to jaw dropping amazement the next. His previous shows have all sold out in venues around the country so don’t miss out! Advance booking is highly recommended. But it is the immense sadness of his experience that stays with Gulli; he fundamentally rejects the notion that he is somehow remarkable: “All I did was save my own life,” he says; “Wouldn’t anyone have tried that?” Based on real events, director Baltasar Kormákur’s account of the tragedy captures in Gulli an Everyman in an extraordinary situation. Through recounting the fisherman’s simple actions, ‘The Deep’ becomes a moving chronicle of the human spirit – thus turning a near-mythical tale to better ends than a statistician’s study of survival. - Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2012

Featuring the voices of: gillian Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, ron Howard (English dubbed version) / Teruyuki Kagawa, Nao Ohmori, Jun Fubuki, Takashi Naito, Masami Nagasawa (Japanese version)
The highest-grossing Japanese film released in Japan in 2011, the new film from Studio Ghibli — co-written by the legendary director and Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, and directed by his son Goro — is a story of young love and cultural renewal set in 1960s Tokyo. Every morning, the teenage Umi raises flags as a blessing to passing sailors, and her goodwill catches the attention of schoolmate Shun, who writes the anonymous flag-raiser a poem in the school newspaper. Joining Shun’s campaign to save the school clubhouse from being destroyed as Tokyo prepares for the 1964 Olympics, Umi soon falls for the charming and passionate young activist. Featuring gorgeous animation, a surprisingly eclectic score (surf music in a Ghibli film!), and evoking such gently humanistic Ghibli classics as Only Yesterday, the lovely, understated From Up on Poppy Hill screens in both a subtitled version and a dubbed English-language edition featuring the voices of Gillian Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ron Howard and Aubrey Plaza. Wine and theatre combine to tell the fascinating story of Ireland’s winemakers. Susan Boyle loves wine. What’s more she knows what she’s drinking and talking about. She’s got 2,000 years of Irish wine history to back her up! So, sit back, let her fill your glass while she takes you on a trip with the tenacious Irish people who transformed the wine world and didn’t let coming from a grape-free land stop them. This hour-long one woman theatrical performance fuses interactive wine tasting with storytelling in a warm, inviting setting. Audience members will have the opportunity to put their senses to use and hopefully leave with a new insight to a drink that has been part of Ireland’s history for much longer than we might think. Since forming in Liverpool in 2007, The Lost Brothers have brewed up a steady catalogue of well crafted, melodic songs that hark back to a time when life was simpler. The duo both grew up surrounded by music and continues to take their life-long knowledge of song-craft, and their native Irish roots, and infuse a spirit of whatever music they happen are absorbing at the time. The result is nothing less than a sound totally their own. Although The Lost Brothers, Oisín Leech and Mark McCausland, are a duo, they consider each record they make to be a collaboration. These are songs of desperation, songs of hope, of losing hope, songs to dance to and songs to die to. The band Equinox is a collective of five like-minded musicians who share the desire to celebrate a common sense of balance; that between tension and resolution, between dissonance and consonance, between the present and the past. Based in the Netherlands, Equinox is co-lead by Guitarist Dan Nicholas and bassist Johnny Daly. Nicholas comes from New York City and Daly is a native of Dublin, Ireland. Both musicians have made the Netherlands their home, inspired by the rich jazz climate they found there. Joining Nicholas and Daly in Equinox are three of the country’s top jazz musicians; the soulful and powerful tenor saxophonist Sjoerd Dijkhuizen, the elegant and adventurous pianist Bob Wijnen and master drummer Marcel Serierse. The band plays a mix of vivid original pieces, personal arrangements of standards and classic jazz repertoire by the likes of Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn, Charles Mingus and Horace Silver. Equinox is deeply rooted in a wide spectrum of jazz tradition, which constantly informs the band’s musical explorations. A stripped back production of a new play by Colin Murphy, directed by Conall Morrison. A dramatisation based on documentary sources about the bank guarantee. On the night of September 29, 2008, the Taoiseach and Minister for Finance decided to guarantee Ireland’s banks – to the tune of €440 billion. Guaranteed! tells the story of that night, and how they got there.
WRITTEN By cOlIN MuRphy
Written by journalist and documentary-maker Colin Murphy, and based on official documents and off-the-record interviews, Guaranteed! reconstructs Ireland’s banking boom and bust – as it was seen from inside the corridors of power. An ensemble of actors plays a myriad of ministers, bankers and bureaucrats as they wrestle with the unfolding crisis. You will come away informed, enraged and perhaps a little heart-broken. We have stripped back our assets for a recessionfriendly, bare-bones presentation where we will hold on to our scripts, while you can hold on to your wallets.. ‘Tired of waiting for a parliamentary inquiry, the Irish public this week flocked to see Guaranteed! in search of answers’ Financial Times ‘Excellent cast…remarkable…an outstanding debut’ Sunday Times

Imagine a season of Girls without the think-piece sociology or narcissism, and you’d have Noah Baumbach’s tale of a New Yorker (Greta Gerwig) negotiating clingy friendships, identity crises and a stuck-in-idle life. The emphasis on outerborough angst and the presence of the mumblecore movement’s poster girl initially suggests a SXSW movie blessed with a more-than-four-figures budget, but the Squid and the Whale auteur has a few aces up his sleeve. His facility for poignant cringe comedy is in full effect, as is Gerwig’s screwball timing (she’s quickly becoming the closest thing we have to a contemporary Jean Arthur), while Sam Levy’s gorgeous b&w cinematography does for Brooklyn what Manhattan once did for Manhattan. We’ve seen way too many tales of twentysomething malaise in the past ten years; Baumbach & Co. make it seem as fresh as a spring morning on Smith Street. - David Fear / Time Out New York

JAcK l & ThE 27 cluB Time 8pm price 122 Few musicians set out to become legends, even fewer succeed. Yet by any standard musicians like Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Kurt Cobain are legendary. Each left behind a lasting musical legacy, with songs that freeze forever a moment in time, speak for a generation, or simply give voice to the grief and grace of the human heart. In so many ways these performers are nothing like each other. One is fabled for her throaty, gutsy singing style; another for his electrifying guitar riffs; a third for his rebellious, sensual stage presence. Some of these musicians sang the blues, some loved jazz, still others graced the pop, R&B, or alt charts. Yet, as diverse as their lives and musical gifts were, every one of these performers shared the same final act: Each died when they were only 27 years old.

For some, the torments and triumphs of a short life were played out over Tumblr and Twitter, others died in obscurity, their star rising only after death. What few will argue is that no matter when they lived, how they died, or how diverse they were from each other, every one of these artists now share a common heritage: Each of them is, without a doubt, legendary.

The Cavalcaders explores the lives and loves of a community of characters in small-town Ireland. Set in an old-fashioned cobbler’s shop, this is the story of a group of men who spend their days mending shoes and their nights as a barbershop quartet and singers of local legend. Their musical harmonies, however, are not reflected in their private lives. The Cavalcaders is a wonderful memory play that explores the complexity of human relationships. With live music and a beautiful musical score, the play is both moving and entertaining as Billy Roche examines how men relate to men and to women. “ …an exquisite gem of a play.” Irish Times “A deeply touching and intelligent play.” Sunday Times Join us from 7pm on Tuesday evening for a wine reception ahead of the opening night of Calvalcaders - Wine with thanks to O’Brien’s of Newbridge.

Aristocratic ladies, social climbers, politicians, high-flying criminals, journalists, actors, decadent nobles, prelates, artists and intellectuals - whether authentic or presumed - form the tissue of these flaky relationships, all engulfed in a desperate Babylon which plays out in the antique palaces, immense villas and most beautiful terraces in the city. They are all there, and they are not seen in a good light. Jep Gambardella, 65, indolent and disenchanted, his eyes permanently imbued with gin and tonic, watches this parade of hollow, doomed, powerful yet depressed humanity. Dir: robert Stevenson / USA / 1964 / 139 mins Cert: U (UK) / Language: English Starring: Julie Andrews, David Tomlinson, Dick van Dyke, glynis Johns As the winner of five Oscars and the film that gave Julie Andrews her on-screen debut, Mary Poppins shouldn’t really need much of a fanfare, but one too many jokes about Dick Van Dyke’s dire Cawk-nee accent can drag a movie down. The exploits of novelist P. L. Travers’ nanny sparkle thanks to the Sherman brothers’ songs (from the haunting Feed The Birds to the rousing supercalifragilisticexpialidocious) and multi-talented leads. Poppins’ arrival from the clouds to shape up the lives of the Banks family is still magical, and the animated sequence so hated by Travers remains a real winner with ankle-biters. But the film’s also overlong and drags both at the beginning (it’s more than 20 minutes before Andrews shows up) and the end.
