Historic Renmark property needs urgent maintenance to survive
preserving history A LACK of State Government funding has stalled plans to revive one of the Riverland’s most historic properties. Renmark based Bangalore, which was one of the original fruit blocks during the Renmark irrigation settlement in 1891, has been left relatively untouched since the State Government purchased the property six years ago.
The heritage listed property with acres of grapevines and fruit trees was home to the famous Morant family and it is believed convicted war criminal Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant stayed at the Bangalore homestead. School and Beyond partnership broker Caroly Du Rieu investigated the idea to use the historic property to give students a hands-on experience in heritage and culture.

Interest rate cuts offer relief MELBOURNE Cup day dealt me a much needed double win. Not only did Dunaden win the cup by a nose hair (literally!) but the Reserve Bank decided to cut interest rates. It has been a long time coming and a welcome relief for home owners. While the economic climate in the Riverland has become more positive in recent months, there is no doubt home owners are still doing it tough. News that citrus growers are receiving below average prices for their fruit is disappointing at best and they will be happy with some slight relief via the interest rate cut.

By CALLUM TRIFONOFF RIVERLAND pubs and hotels benefited from increased trade on Tuesday as many people donned their fashionable dresses and suits and took a punt on the Melbourne Cup. While locals packed venues across the region, a number of Riverlanders were lucky enough to make the trek to Flemington and watch the races live. Renmark Hotel manager Michael Schuetze said attending social functions at different venues for the race that stops a nation has become a well embedded tradition in the region. “There was a group of around 25 that had lunch and got dressed up and got right into the atmosphere,” Mr Schuetze said. “Melbourne Cup is becoming bigger every year. “It’s the unofficial public

Last Tuesday, the Berri Magistrates Court ruled that a 57-year-old Barmera man will have his car forfeited after a string of driving convictions. Renmark targeted to take advantage of Olympic Dam mine expansion
Fly in, fly out application By BRAD PERRY THE Riverland could ride the mining boom with the region submitting an application to host fly in, fly out workers from the Olympic Dam mine expansion. Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland has provided a submission to the House of Representatives standing committee for Renmark to host fly in, fly out (FIFO) or drive in, drive out (DIDO) workers. Current estimates show that once Olympic Dam is fully operational, hundreds of thousands of jobs will be created, with up to 30 per cent of the workforce flying or driving in and
out of the mine. Renmark Paringa Council Mayor Neil Martinson said the Riverland has all the attributes to service a FIFO workforce with skilled labour, affordable housing, potential development

it may be another opportunity to push forward our development in the Riverland so we can be more sustainable.” Mr Martinson said the Renmark airstrip has a long sealed runway and could accommodate
the workforce. “We believe the facility that we've got here at Renmark with a 1.7 kilometre runway and a reasonably new terminal building with toilets, waiting rooms and a communication centre, would suit planes for the purpose of taking Riverland people to the mines and back,” he said. “Depending on the number of days working and the number of days off, it would give any skilled workers who may own a fruit property to enhance those skills in the mines and then come back home on their time off and operate their blocks and maintain the family network within the Riverland area.”
Katfish Reach Steering Group honoured at NRM award ceremony THE Katfish Reach Steering Group won the integrated project category at the 2011 Premier’s Natural Resources Mangement Awards last week. The ceremony, held in Adelaide last Wednesday, recognised the contribution made by volunteers to the sustainable management of the state’s natural resources. Katfish Reach Steering Committee chairman Kevin Smith said winning the award for the Katfish Reach project was an unexpected surprise but the recognition for efforts and contributions was gratefully received. “This award is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of our executive officer Mike Harper and the way in which he has engaged our group in achieving a great win for the local environment,” Mr Smith said.

Phone 8583 5322 26 Randell Tce Monash By BRAD PERRY THERE was nothing Winkie resident John Menzel could do as he watched his beloved dahlia shade house destroyed in a freak incident on Friday. It took just a matter of seconds for the structure to be dismantled by what is being described as a mini tornado. “I was actually sitting in the car over in the carpark and I could see it coming and it was just one big pipe of red dust and it was not much more than about 30 metres wide,” Mr Menzel said. “All it did was, it picked it up by about three or four feet and dropped it on the ground. “It sounded like a freight train coming and going, it made a hell of a roar.” The shade house, which is well known for growing a range of dahlia varieties used in the Riverland Floral Spectacular, was left almost unsalvageable, causing thousands of dollars
in damage. In fact, the strength of the winds was demonstrated by the stretching of springs used in the shade house structure. “When you’ve got trampoline springs that stretch out to four feet, 1.2 metres, that just says it all,” Mr Menzel said. Despite Mr Menzel finding pieces of the structure 300 metres from where it had originallly sat, he said there was no choice but to begin to rebuild. “We went straight away into recovery mode, what can we salvage, what we can’t,” he said. “It was a case of we have just got to grin and bear it but there is one good side, when we rebuild it we will make it a little bit bigger so we can grow some more.” The Riverland Floral Spectacular will still go ahead as planned with the structure set to be back up and plantings to occur within weeks. Mr Menzel has received support from all over the world

Basin plan on LGA’s agenda By BRAD PERRY NEWLY appointed South Australian Local Government Association president Kym McHugh has no doubt the Riverland’s efficient irrigation history should be taken into account in the Murray Darling Basin Plan. Mr McHugh and LGA chief executive officer Wendy Campana visited the Riverland on Tuesday meeting with local councils to discuss pressing issues. With the Basin Plan draft expected to be released this month, Mr McHugh said the plan needs to be balanced. “We’ve got the situation that we saw from 10 years of drought, that the environment along the river suffered in a lot of areas, so we want to see a plan that is really well balanced, that doesn’t have an adverse impact on irrigated agriculture but also enhances the environment,” he said. “I think with better management with the water that is in the system, with the water that has already been brought back by the Federal Government and with improvements in irrigation practices in the Eastern states in particular, we will see some savings in water. “If that water is better managed, we should be able to maintain a sustainable Murray
■ MEETING: (From left) Berri Barmera Council chief executive officer David Beaton, LGA president Kym McHugh, LGA chief executive officer Wendy Campana and Berri Barmera Council Mayor Peter Hunt talk about local issues during the LGA pair’s visit to the Riverland and Mallee this week. Photo: BRAD PERRY Darling Basin.” Mr McHugh acknowledged Riverland growers are worldwide leaders in irrigation techniques. “The Riverland has got a very long and good history in irrigation,” he said. “They lead Australia in their irrigation practices, their efficiency, the way they irrigate. “It definitely needs to be a model for other states and it should be taken into account that our irrigators are very, very efficient with what they do and shouldn’t be adversely affected through the plan.” The LGA will make a submission to the Federal Government and Basin Authority once the plan is released. During the visit, the issue of
flood levee banks was a topic of discussion. “It’s about being forewarned,” Mr McHugh said. “It’s about knowing some of the predicted levels and about being sure of the integrity of the levee banks along the river. “It is not a real simple thing because some of the levee banks are on private property and whose responsibility is it? “We’ve talked to (Water) Minsiter (Paul) Caica about him being aware of what is going on, being a partner in any investigations and also helping the councils up here seek financial contribution from the Federal Government.” Ms Campana said the LGA is sitting on a State Government
taskforce which is looking at floods. “In terms of our preparation, do we have the data we need to anticipate the impact of a flood?” she said. “I know that’s an issue up here in the Riverland. “Certainly lots of different organisations have data but we don’t have a centralised process to bring that all together. “We are certainly making sure the Riverland experiences are being brought up and discussed.” The pair met with Berri Barmera, Renmark Paringa, Loxton Waikerie and Southern Mallee councils on Tuesday and Karoonda East Murray and Mid Murray on Wednesday.

While Beryl was living at the house a manager was appointed by the State Heritage Branch to maintain the fruit block but after her passing, maintenance was relied on by lessees. The building at the Bangalore property is made of pine, similar to Olivewood, and the surrounding property has original drying racks, irrigation and many other historic elements. “There's original earth channels for flood irrigation, so as far as a working piece of
history, that could be a potential for the future,” Mrs Du Rieu. “There is a lot of work that needs to be done on the property and obviously that equates to a lot of money. “I'd like to see it developed so it does become an alternative learning site for young people in the Riverland who might like to learn about horticulture, and or, culture and history. “I think that if we keep the local community interested and keep persevering with the department, that eventually we will be able to get a good management plan.”

It is understood the State Government Heritage Branch decided to purchase Bangalore because there were fears for its survival if it was passed into private hands and the body wanted to operate it as a museum. It was also understood the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is responsible for the management and protection of the property but a lack of available funding limits on ground works at the site. Mrs Du Rieu said applying for the $20 million Sustainable Futures Fund is also not an option at this stage because she is unaware as to what can be done to the property. Renmark Paringa Council Mayor Neil Martinson said not having a formal management plan makes it hard for council to provide any funds. “We would need to get hold of a management plan of some sort to see what is exactly being proposed there,” he said. “We haven't got any money budgeted at all, it's a State Government property. “It's a facility that could enhance tourism opportunities for our area and the Riverland as well.”

THE Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision to slash interest rates on Tuesday has been welcomed by Riverland home and business owners and will boost the local economy. Riverland Lending Services finance manager Steven O’Brien said the quarter of a percent cut is the first for some Australian banks for over two years. “It’ll mean home owners will have more money in their pockets (and) a bit more money to spend,” Mr O’Brien said. “That’ll be good for farmers and growers and all small businesses in the area.” Mr O’Brien said already there is talk of a quarter per cent drop for February next year and he believes rates will not rise for an extended period. Currently, only the Westpac and the Commonwealth banks have passed on the interest rate cuts but more banks are expected to follow suit in the coming days.

MATURE age Riverlanders are leaving promising jobs to pursue a career in the food industry. This year’s commercial cookery program at TAFE SA, Berri, has seen a rise in mature age student numbers with many looking to experience food techniques, while others are planning future career changes. Traditionally the local TAFE program has been full of apprentice chefs and school students but this year, a heightened interest in cooking has seen the older generation take part. For Renmark’s Anne Bott, getting involved in cooking will become a future income while travelling. “I’ve decided to become a nomad later down the track and I went on the internet to find out what sort of opportunities there

BRAD PERRY are for employment and a lot of opportunities for cooks came up, especially in small places, she said. “You are never too old to learn a new skill. Jean Thorpe, also of Renmark, always wanted to pursue a career working with food but life dealt her many challenges along the way. “I was 15 and pregnant with my first child and I always wanted to be a chef, so I waited for a few years until my kids were a bit older and I thought I would get into doing this course and it has been really fun, she said.
“Since I’ve been here I’ve learned so much with cookery that instead of making spaghetti bolognese, roast chicken and lasagne, I’ve learnt lots more for my kids to eat. “From being a young teenage mum to coming here, I’ve learnt people skills and confidence in myself and don’t give up because you can be whatever you want to be. Top quality cooking for family and friends is what motivated Barmera’s Brett Rogers to enrol in the course. “I just had an opportunity to take some time out and I’ve always wanted to learn to cook and my motivation was to cook for friends and family, he said. “The group is a mixture of young and mature age students and they mesh in and mix well.
TAFE SA Berri commercial cookery co-ordinator Alistair Ferguson said a lady who participated in the course decided to quit her successful job and pursue a passion with food. “A couple of years ago when MasterChef struck, that was the thing where a lot of people turned around and said ‘I can do that’ or ‘it is something I have always wanted to do’, he said. “We’re getting quite a few mature age people who are seeing cookery on the TV and there is more knowledge about food in the past five years than ever before. “What we are finding is instead of people coming along because they have to be here, they’re coming along because they want to be here and that changes it for us.
THE history of the Loveday Internment Camp may become part of the local education curriculum if plans come to fruition. A concept to establish a Loveday Internment Camp museum took a step forward after a meeting was held on Monday night with two facilitators present. Loveday Internment Camp steering committee chairman Rosemary Gower said educating local students about the camp's history is vital. “We were looking at drawing up a development plan and looking at the different stages we’ll be going through to get it up and running, she said. “We are in negotiation with the regional education department regarding next year’s curriculum for some of the primary schools. “We are looking at the history component and looking at teaching local history next year. Applications for funding have been made for an interpretative sign at the museum and smaller signs near the buildings and foundations, with retractable banners to be used for educational purposes. Mrs Gower said plans for the museum are pushing ahead with a visit to other major internment camp museums at Tatura, Hay and Cowra planned.

Just two growers front for citrus meeting By BRAD PERRY JUST two growers attended the South Australian Citrus Industry Development Board (SACIDB) annual meeting in Renmark on Monday. The board was looking for feedback from growers about its industry management plan and lined up an impressive list of knowledgeable industry guest speakers. However, just two growers bothered to attend the meeting with other industry and board members also present. SACIDB chairman Peter
Walker said the attendance was very poor. “Unfortunately we only had a few there and the speakers just talked and there was no questions, he said. “It was a shame that with the quality of speakers we had, more growers didn’t turn up. During the meeting speakers talked about the Tri-State Fruit Fly Community Awareness Program, citrus postharvest outcomes and the USA export season. Mr Walker said growers have received bad returns for navels and how the valencia season will turn out is also unknown at
this stage. “Growers would be very, very disappointed, to say the least, on what is predicted for valencias and what they have just come out of with navels, he said. “The returns are reflective of what the juice price is and if the juice price is depressed, that’s what growers will get unfortunately. “There are a lot of growers who have had enough. “At the moment some growers have contracts and some haven’t. Meanwhile, Mr Walker supports Citrus Australia’s move to
launch a new logo that guarantees consumers that any juice carrying the logo is made from 100 per cent Australian grown oranges.

BEING one of the most culturally diverse regions in Australia, it is fitting this Saturday’s Riverland Multicultural Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Riverland Multicultural Festival co-ordinator Danyon De Buell said the festival, which is part of the Berri Centenary celebrations, is expected to attract a large crowd. “We’ve had a few multicultural festivals in the past and this is good because we’re celebrating cultural diversities,” Ms De Buell said. The main event, the festival parade, will take place along the riverfront at 3pm. Organisers are encouraging everyone to take part in the festival by dressing up in traditional dress. “We want it to be noisy and

There will also be guest performances from Patrick Harvey and Glen Van Oosterom, a Berri Primary School Bollywood showcase, Renmark Primary School’s Greek Dance Group will perform and Harmon Singh is expected to be popular on the tabla. “We have an activity tent and the Riverland Youth Theatre is working on that,” Ms De Buell said. “If someone hasn’t got a costume, they can make a costume.” Ms De Buell is excited about the artists who are taking part in the festival. “At 7pm, we will be having an all-star jam where we will be inviting anyone to bring their musical instrument with them and jam with some of our professional musicians to truly end the day with a wow factor,” she said.

The session is open to everyone in the community and will explain the current proposal, including the rehabilitation of previous mining areas in the Mindarie region, and the plans going forward. This is an opportunity for you to meet the Murray Zircon project team, hear about what is being proposed, have questions answered and provide your feedback. Light refreshments will be available. Please contact Steve McEwen on 08 8410 8884 or email mmccc@murrayzircon.com.au if you would like further information. Murray Zircon looks forward to your attendance.
THE prevention of suicide and self-harm in the Riverland is the aim of a new program mooted for the region. A steering committee has set its sights on raising $35,000 to role out the Community Response to Eliminating Suicide (CORES) program. Since the idea arose in February, the program has so far seen involvement from local councils, the Riverland Division of General Practice, St Vincent de Paul, service clubs, agriculture industry bodies and local churches.
CORES is a community-based program to educate local people about how to intervene when they encounter someone they believe may be suicidal. Although the target may seem large, committee chair Val Fewster says it represents about $1 for each man, woman and child living in the region. Local people will be trained as team leaders and trainers, who will then deliver a one-day course to about 250 Riverland residents. Already four people have expressed interest in
becoming trainers. Mrs Fewster said economic pressures facing the region recently and the associated emotional response have made the establishment of the CORES program even more urgent. “CORES educates people about how to be proactive, to prevent somebody taking their life harming themselves,” Mrs Fewster explained. ‘If we are successful, we are confident Riverland lives will be saved and much needless suffering will be avoided. “However, we need sports

and community groups to own the program. “If they don’t own it, it’s not going to be successful.” Letters have been sent to businesses throughout the region to seek sponsorship for the program. Individuals can also make donations at the Berri-Barmera Council office. “We hope we will have enough money to start training sometime in the new year,” Mrs Fewster explained. For more information contact Val on 8582 1882.
AND ANOTHER THING...
NASHO tours the region Murray Zircon, a mining and resources company, is talking with the community and PIRSA about reopening the Mindarie mining operations in 2012. We are also investing to rehabilitate the previous mineral sands mine in the District Council of Karoonda East Murray. Feasibility study As a part of this process, we are conducting a mining Feasibility Study. This study is currently underway and will determine if the mine is economic to reopen, as well as the best mining methodology to minimise the impact on the environment and improve rehabilitation outcomes. The feasibility study is expected to be finalised by late 2011.
Program for Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation (PEPR) Following the feasibility study, a Program for Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation (PEPR) will be developed for the site. This is a Primary Industries and Resources of South Australia (PIRSA) requirement, and the mining operations cannot commence until this document has been approved. Through this document, PIRSA will outline their conditions for rehabilitation management and monitoring, to allow us to commence mining operations. The PEPR will outline our mining methodology and plan for returning the land to the landowners. It will also address issues including: • • • • •
transportation worker accommodation visual amenity noise dust and air quality
• site clearance and soil management • rehabilitation • operations, including mining & processing methodology • opportunities for wider community benefit.
We are also working with PIRSA and landowners on the rehabilitation of the previous mining area, called Mindarie A2. We are hosting a community meeting on Tuesday 15 November 2011, 6pm-7:30pm, at the East Murray Community Centre in Karoonda. All members of the public are welcome to come and discuss the project, and provide feedback to the Murray Zircon team. Please contact Steve McEwen on 08 8410 8884 or email mmccc@murrayzircon.com.au if you would like further information.

RECYCLING WEEK
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Embracing recycling week From November 7 to 13, Australia celebrates the 16th National Recycling Week, which aims to improve the environmental benefits of all forms of recycling including kerbside, industrial and community programs.
National Recycling Week quiz
Interesting facts about recycling
1. What happens after your recycling gets collected? a) Most of it ends up in landfill b) It all gets sent overseas for processing c) It goes to a recycling facility where the different materials are sorted by both people and machines
â– The very first municipal dump was formed in ancient Athens in 400 B.C. â– In France, most grocery stores sell drinks in glass bottles which may be returned to the store for refilling. â– Every single year the world population disposes around 24 million tonnes of leaves and grass clippings, which could be converted to compost to conserve landfill space.
2. What is the most common recycling mistake? a) Putting plastic bags in the kerbside recycling bin b) Forgetting to rinse out empty cans and jars c) Leaving the recycling bin lid open
â– A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as a new can in as little as 60 days.
3. How many batteries do Australians throw away every year? a) 270 million (about 12 per person) b) 220 million (about 10 per person) c) 176 million (about 8 per person)
Cleaning your recyclables
4. What is the main material used to make milk and juice cartons? a) Plastic b) Cardboard c) Aluminium film
ONE of the most common questions about recycling is how clean do jars, cans and pizza boxes need to be before they can go in the recycling bin. Small amounts of food left in the box do not interfere with the glass and steel recycling process. Scrape all the solid food scraps out of jars and cans and then take them to the recycling. If you are concerned about having left over food in the bin, you can
5) How many times can an aluminium can be recycled? a) Once b) Ten times c) Infinitely
lightly rinse out your jars and cans. Using leftover washing up or rinsing water is best option as there is no point wasting good water just to wash recycling. Before taking pizza boxes to be recycled, check whether your council accepts them or visit RecyclingNearYou. com.au to find out. If your council does accept the boxes, just scrape out all the solid food scraps.
If the pizza box has a removable cardboard mat, take that out and put it in the garbage. There should be no solid food left in the box. If your council does not accept pizza boxes they can go into compost bins or make good covers for worm farms. Sourced from www.recyclingweek. planetark.org

Positive kerbside recycling trial in Loxton BARMERA Recycling
LOXTON residents have provided overwhelmingly positive feedback about a domestic kerbside recycling trial in the town. The trial began in August with 112 Loxton residents on Luther Road, Hall Crescent, Crocker Crescent, Pfitzner Court and Colin Street receiving two extra bins on top of the existing 240 litre bin. A 360 litre yellow lidded bin for recycling and an 80 litre red lidded bin for residual waste are part of the trial, which is expected to finish in around a month. The trial is aimed at measuring how well the collection works, the quantity of recyclables and green waste that is captured and the feedback of the people who are participating. Loxton Waikerie Council development and community services manager Stephen Bate-
man said he has been contacted by local community members who had hoped to be involved in the trial. “The people that are in the trial are really pleased with what’s going on, he said. “We did the trial area but we are having a lot of other people say they would be willing to be in the trial as well. Mr Bateman said the coming weeks will be crucial for the trial as the weather begins to change. “With the warmer weather coming on, recycling increases as well because people start drinking more, he said. “Over the spring period (we believe) people (may) get rid of more green waste. If a kerbside recycling service was to be implemented in the Loxton district, Mr Bateman said local recycling businesses
would benefit. “One of the good parts about the trial is the fact we have worked very, very closely with the local recycling company, he said. With the Berri Barmera and Renmark Paringa councils also looking into the possibility of kerbside recycling in the near future, Mr Bateman said much waste will be diverted from landfill. “I think it is absolutely fantastic, he said. “That would be the ultimate if you had all the Riverland councils involved in recycling and the possibility of then working together.

SINCE it began four years ago, Riverland Trade Schools for the Future has helped shape the future of over 300 high school students. The State Government initiative began in the Riverland in 2008 and is about to take another step in its development with a separate Trade Schools for the Future office to officially be opened on November 17. Apprenticeship brokers Kerry Woolston and Chris Marks are excited about Trade Schools for the Future pushing forward and are keen to continue helping students gain school-based apprenticeships and traineeships. In the past, the service was offered from a small office at Glossop High School’s senior campus. The move to a bigger location is a great opportunity to better enhance skills required for students entering the workforce, according to Mrs Woolston. “It is fantastic, she said. “It’s something that all the schools we serve in the Riverland will benefit from. The Riverland branch of Trade
Schools for the Future currently works with four major Riverland high schools, while also working at the Riverland Special School, Lameroo Regional Community School and Swan Reach and East Murray area schools.
The average age of a tradie here in the Riverland is around 45.
Mrs Woolston said trade schools plays a major part in high school students’ futures. “An apprenticeship or traineeship provides a nationally recognised qualification, she said. “They have training, experience on the job, they get credits towards their SACE and it’s an opportunity to become a valued employee of their
choice that they’ll be working in. The number of students Trade Schools for the Future has reached in the Riverland is phenomenal. “We’ve done about 320 over our four years and that’s amazing, Mrs Woolston said. “The best thing about being involved is helping a student get their future mapped out for them. “Students can start as early as year 10 and then when they get full-time employment, that’s really rewarding for me to actually see the kids achieve their goals. Mrs Woolston believes young workers involved in the trade schools program are the future of Riverland businesses. “The average age of a tradie here in the Riverland is around 45, she said. “So I think people of the Riverland have really taken it on on board and supported us because there’s a future in our young kids. For more information on the Riverland Trade Schools for the Future, phone Kerry or Chris on 8595 2677.

Finding a suited career path
â– HARD WORKERS: Rosenthal Automotive apprentices (from left) Omar Rasheed and Cobey Brown followed their chosen careers with help from Trade Schools for the Future. Photo: CALLUM TRIFONOFF
THE Trade Schools for the Future program has assisted many young Riverlanders in finding career paths. Glossop High School student Cobey Brown has been on a schoolbased apprenticeship as a mechanic at Rosenthal Automotive and will become a full-time apprentice when school is finished. Cobey decided against following his father’s footsteps and becoming a panel beater, instead
deciding to pursue a career he has a passion for. “I had an interest in cars so becoming a mechanic was the next thing that popped into my head, he said. Through Trade Schools for the Future, Cobey was lucky enough to receive an apprenticeship with renowned car business Rosenthal Automotive. Hands on experience has been valuable for Cobey.
“I am a rookie so some jobs get quite difficult but you do learn, he said. “That’s the whole point of an apprenticeship, to build your status. Fellow Glossop High School student Omar Rasheed is also very thankful for the opportunity to be involved with the trade schools program. The apprentice mechanic has been working at Rosenthal
Automotive for over a month. Omar said pursuing a career in his chosen field was very important for him and he is committed to his chosen career. “I like to learn everything as much as I can, he said. Like Cobey, Omar had the chance to work alongside his father as a panel beater but decided to pursue his career aspirations. “I was thinking about it but I

Cars in the news
Car club’s big milestone THE Riverland Vintage and Classic Car Club recently celebrated a significant milestone, reaching 40 years in the region. What began as the Loxton Vintage and Classic Car Club on May 25, 1970 has grown today to incorporate many members. In fact, in 1971 a number of members joined the club from across the river, so a decision at an annual general meeting was made to rename the club to its current title. Today the Riverland Vintage and Classic Car Club has members spreading far and wide across the Riverland and Mallee. Last month 95 members and associates attended the 40th anniversary of the club at the Barmera-Monash Football Club. Prior to the dinner, 23 classic cars took part in a show and shine. Of those in attendance, three 1948 Holdens from Pinnaroo had made the trip towing small caravans and following the Riverland celebrations, attended the Murray Mallee Auto Club’s 10th anniversary. Riverland Vintage and Classic Car Club patron Lawrie Kalisch said reaching four decades as a club in an often compromising economic climate is a great achievement. “I think it’s quite exciting,” he told the Riverland Weekly. Mr Kalisch has been involved with the club for over 35 years and said the group has certainly expanded since the early days. “In those days there was only
a handful of members and they were a bit younger,” he said. “I just love cars and it’s just nice going for a run with the club.” There were a number of former and present members in attendance at the 40 year celebrations, including Neville and Helen Wilson, Ralph and Kay Ohlmeyer, Malcolm and Ruth Perry, Gloria Pluckhahn, Val Cooper and Pat Saunders. During the celebrations, various car stories were told and members related back to past experiences with the club. It was also fitting, Val Cooper and Gloria Pluckhahn, whose husbands were both active members of the club for many years, cut the birthday cake. In a remarkable effort, Ray Jones and John Manuel received recognition for 40 years of service with both being life members. The club has gone from strength to strength since 1977, when it had 44 restored vehicles under its membership. Club president Joy Mules said there has been overwhelming support over the years. “There have been many members who have supported the car club with pride and dedication and I thank each one of you who have come along to help celebrate this milestone in the club’s history,” she said. “I wish to mention two names which appeared in the first two years, namely Mick Gladigau and Rudy Nitschke, whose sons have carried on the tradition.”
POLICE NEWS Operation motorcycles SOUTH Australian Police have begun the month long Operation Safe Motorcycles. The operation will run until November 30, targeting speed and dangerous riding on leisure rides, protective clothing, car versus riders at intersections and driver attitudes and behaviours towards motorcyclists. In 2010, there were 10 motorcycle fatalities, compared to 13 in 2009. There have already been 18 motocycle fatalities this year.
Mistaken identity
n birthday: Ready to cut the Riverland Vintage and Classic Car Club’s 40th anniversary cake recently were (from left) Val Cooper, Gloria Pluckhahn and Joy Mules.
LAST week a man got into what he thought was his own vehicle parked outside the Commercial Hotel in Morgan. He began to drive towards Adelaide before realising he was driving the wrong car. The man apologetically returned the Holden vehicle. It turned out the man owned a similar vehicle, with both owners leaving their keys in their unlocked vehicles at the same location, at the same time.
Number plate thefts
n worthy: Barb and Ray Jones were recognised for their outstanding efforts to the car club during the milestone celebrations.
A RISE in number plate thefts has seen local police issue a call for help. Vehicle number plates are often stolen by people who use them later on other vehicles while committing offences. In the latest incident, a number plate was stolen from a car parked in a driveway on Powell Street in Berri between 10am on October 27 and 6pm the following day.

SENIORS in Waikerie and the surrounding district will be treated to an entertaining spectacle at the 15th annual Down Memory Lane. Organised by the Waikerie Lions Club, this year’s show has the theme ‘who’s being served?’ and hits of the 1950s. Held at the Waikerie Club, the event gives seniors the opportunity to mingle with friends and be entertained through skits and sing-a-longs. Down Memory Lane is free to attend, with the Waikerie Lions Club offering a pick-up service and the ‘wheelchair brigade’ to help those who are not so mobile. The melodrama is a take-off of English series Are You Being Served? Organiser Jan Heppner said a large crowd is expected to attend the popular event. “The seniors look forward to it every year, she said.

Berri names new coach NEW Berri coach ‘Alby’ Brand has declared he will do everything in his power to develop the young Demons into a premiership team. The former West Adelaide zone and academy coach was this week appointed after premiership coach Rod Hankin resigned several weeks ago. Brand, who played 253 games for the Demons, had previously coached the A grade team in 1995 and 1996. “I am genuinely excited about coaching a special playing and leadership group that has involved within the BFC,” he said. “The club atmosphere is terrific. “They are keen for success and I want to help them achieve it.” Brand also aims to be involved with all grades at the club next year. “To be involved and assist all grades in developing new game and playing styles will be rewarding,” he said. Berri president Brenton Woolston welcomed the appointment of the club stalwart. “Alby’s commitment to football is widely respected,” Mr Woolston said. “The BFC club and playing group are very excited to have Alby at the Demon helm. “We have a young and talented group which can further develop under Alby.” Meanwhile, the Demons have also confirmed the appointment of two-time premiership player Jayme Peltz as B grade coach. 2011 under 18 premiership coach Paul Dack has been reappointed to lead the thirds next year.

Reilly pursues dreams n From Page 28 The ultimate dream for Reilly would be playing for Australia in the under 19 world cup next year. “It would be a huge achievement,” he said. “It is something you only dream of” A stand out season in the Riverland Turf Cricket Association
in 2010-11 helped Reilly push forward with his cricket at a higher level. “It’s definitely boosted my confidence, knowing I can get wickets against some of the better Riverland cricketers,” he said. Reilly will return to Loxton to play in two coming matches against Waikerie and Berri.
Stout dominates Berri ski classic
n big day: (From left) Brad Hill, Naomi Kalms, Jade Farrelly and Ryan Hoffman at the annual golf event in Barmera.
THE weekend’s Berri 90 Ski Race Classic was one of the most successful in recent times with an estimated crowd of 6000 turning out for the three-day event. The winner of the super class was the internationallyacclaimed Chris Stout skiing behind Blazen. The Sydney skier was a major drawcard to the event and organiser Loretta Scott said it was a privilege for the race to attract such world class talent. “It’s always good for the guys to come,” Ms Scott said. “They really liked the event because the river here is nice and wide and there’s plenty of room for good racing.” Despite this year’s event outshining the last, Ms Scott did not rule out the possibility of changing the format. “We’re always looking to improve,” she said. “There might be a few tweaks here and there. “The way that it went, we had no major incidents, no
major accidents, it all ran really smoothly.” The event’s mayhem race added a sense of thrill to the weekend, according to Ms Scott. “The mayhem for me was the highlight,” she said. “All the close racing we had was exciting...it would get down to one boat winning by one-hundredth of a second.” Meanwhile, for the third time in four attempts, locals Chris and Damien Philp have come away with success at the Berri 90 Ski Race Classic. The father-son duo along with Victorian skiers Mason Vaughan and Mitch Williams took out the eight litre class at the event on the weekend. “Halfway through our race, we got overtaken,” Damien said. “On the second lap, we ended up overtaking them again and we got back into the lead. “Our skiers were a lot stronger and they held on in the rough water. “We managed to get a lead by about 500 metres before the finish line.”
Renmark loses key player in Bennett By CALLUM TRIFONOFF RENMARK Football Club will lose key player Ryan Bennett for season 2012. The former West Adelaide league player rejoined the Rovers last season and was welcomed back with open arms. However, Bennett (pictured) has departed again, this time for Roxby Downs. The star forward said
he has thoroughly enjoyed his stint with the club. “It’s footy, you enjoy playing footy, you enjoy having a good time,” he said. “It’s always good coming home and playing with your mates.” There are not many regrets from Bennett’s time with the club but he admits the Rovers’ start to last season could have been significantly better.
“We played good footy in patches but we couldn’t put it together until the latter part of the season,” he said. “It would’ve been good to get firing earlier and get a few more runs on the board instead of leaving it until the last seven games.” Bennett is unsure if and where he will play in 2012 but he has confirmed it will not be Renmark.

Growing a ‘mo’ for a great cause T
hey have been cricket teammates and business partners for many years but Todd and Doc at Riverland Premier Sports Centre are going to be in serious conflict during November. Recently registered as ‘Mo Brothers’, the pair will engage in a challenge to cultivate the best moustache and at the same time support Movember and mens’ health. The pair will be making a contribution to this worthy cause, as well as having a lo-
cal JP arrange and scrutinise vote buckets in both Berri and Renmark stores so that people can also make a donation towards the charity and at the same time register their opinion on the progress of any respective Moustache growth. Magnifying glasses will also be available for closer inspection. The involvement of a JP will also perhaps deter any foul play, as already staff are puzzled that in a store where to find a black pen or texta is usually nigh impossible,
Todd’s drawers are suddenly full of them. Doc also insists the small bag of Dynamic Lifter he has in the storeroom is to be taken home for use on his garden and denies having made a weekly appointment with his sister, a hairdresser, with skills in dyeing in limited spaces. Indeed all this may sound like madness but it is only the tip of the iceberg, or moustache, if you like. November is also Movember Madness month at Premier Sports.
A traditional week long Sensational Shoe Sale starts today with big bargains right across all of the big brands. Then in turn there will be prices slashed each week on much, much more. This will be a great chance to grab a real bargain, pick up those early Christmas presents and to keep an eye on any progress our Mo challengers may be able to make. No matter who you cast your vote for, Merv Hughes and David Boon are safe.

Thursday November 3, 2011 – Riverland Weekly • 27 It’s incredible, it’s a great moment for me ~ Dunaden’s jockey Christoph Lemaire after winning the Melbourne Cup.

The number of nominees for the 2010-11 Riverland Sportsperson of the Year.
Looking back at...
A day at the races
■ OVER: Healthy crowds once attended the Melbourne Cup event at the Riverland Greyhound Racing Club. ■ I AM slowly working my way through many old records I have accumulated from around 1980. After about six months into my record searching, I am up to 1993. Yes it is slow going, mainly because I admit I find myself getting involved in reading old broadcast notes and other records. However being in the early 1990’s, it is a great opportunity to revisit our Melbourne Cup Days during that era. Around 800 people attended a meeting at the Riverland Racing Club at Berri and any locals that backed Riverland trained Lady Habit in the first event
would have been off to a good start, as it won easily. Another highlight for locals was the success by jockey Mark Brazier, on Royal Shore, in a 1600 metre race when he rode brilliantly to win after trailing the favourite Warwick Way by fifteen lengths at the halfway mark. The 1800 metre feature race, the Berri Hotel-Motel Cup, went to Black Charmer, owned and trained at Cheltenham by Brian Searle. Talking of charmers, it was said the toughest task put in front of judges on the day was to choose the fashion parade winners. A dress made out of blue
garbage bags gave Barmera`s Jill Huckel-Hicks a win in a photo finish. And Riverland Melbourne Cup time in 1993? That was not all. Another 800 people went along to an eleven event meeting at the Barmera Greyhounds on the previous Saturday. The cup final was won by Mindrina, owned by Moorook’s Lin and Donna Wachtel, and trained by Karen Wittholz at Gawler. They were great Riverland times and somehow this year’s Melbourne Cup Day perched in front of the box was nowhere near the same.
SPORT
Dinghy champ ■ I TELEPHONED Jason Gordon late last Saturday afternoon to see whether he had been able to hang on to his slender one point lead in the second annual Paul Hutchins Loan Centre Dinghy Championship when the final stage, the 2011 Hunchee Run had been run earlier in the day. But like an experienced politician, although quietly confident, he was not prepared to claim victory until officials released the final points figures at the presentation dinner that night. He explained that there was always the threat of being penalised if you erred in your timing on the passage through a safety controlled section at the halfway mark of the Hunchee Run at Calperum Bridge. But Jason had got it right and on Monday night with a voice that could have still been effected by celebrations, he told me that, with his swinger Hayden Schepel, he had won both legs of Saturday’s event. In the final 30HP Sports class placings, he had finished on 63 points ahead of defending champions Linton Price and Colin Gordon, 55, Scott Jenke and Simon Johnson, 47, Brent Martin and Aiden Kenyon, 46, Chris Lang and Kym Trout 42 and Kyle Gregurke and Tom Azzopardi 41.
■ WINNER: Renmark’s Jason Gordon has been crowned winner of the 2011 Dinghy Championship. In the Hunchee Run, Gordon’s time was one minute and 13 seconds better than Price, with Gregurke another one minute and 39 seconds further back in third place. In the last two legs of the championship, Hayden Schepel had filled in for Jason’s regular wingman Ben Pobke, who has been out injured. Linton Price on the other hand, did everything he could to retain his title but his score was still effected by his costly spill earlier in the competition and as a result, was the last boat to start in Saturday’s time trial event, meaning he had a lot of other craft to contend with along the course as he raced against the clock. Jason Gordon also made special mention of the lightning fast run made by Matt Thur and Reece Glazbrook
that only came to an end when the boat’s motor developed problems. In other classes, Jenke edged ahead of Lang in 30HP Open Rookies and Shane Palat jumped over Benn Pearce in 30HP Super Standard in a couple of exciting finishes to the series. The 30HP Standard title went to Tyson Roe/Sam Kenyon, 300cc Modified was won by Steven Petschel/ Sam Mellington by one point from dinghy legend John Chigros and Jody Cole, 25HP Standard was awarded to Matt Schwartzkopff and Chad Moxham, 15HP Standard to Aaron and Cameron Richards, 10HP to Jody Goodbody/Aldo Wergentina and 10HP Standard to John Bousfield and Brian Clever. So after two annual Riverland Dinghy championships, it is rival and brotherin-laws Gordon and Price at one win each but with a number of others closing the gap in the standard the title winners have set. In fact, if you listen to the ripples on the water the opposition in 2012 could contain some really big names. Or was Western Australia visitor Jay Branson just here on holidays for the weekend? He has won the Avon Descent four times, which is the toughest whitewater event in the world, and would be a tough competitor.
Marlor enters record books ■ KINGSTON-on-Murray’s Don Juers, the president of the SA Drug Free Powerlifting Association, reported a successful final competition for the year following last Saturday’s championships at Berri. Twelve lifters took part in
the year’s final event, including two novices, with 19 state records being established. Of the local lifters, Loxton’s Fran Marlor set four state records, while Rose Gow (Barmera) and Andrew Norris (Berri) each set one.
Adelaide visitors Aaron McFarlane and Chris Powell each broke four records and Clay Wescome managed to claim three. Fifty five people attended a presentation dinner at the Cobdogla Club after the event.

Local field and game clubs put on top shooting performance ■ RENMARK and Berri Field and Game members recently took part in a competitive national event. Rob Shawyer, Kailan Markham and Deanna Vander Zalm were members of the South Australian team that, with 1228 points, finished runner up to Victoria (1347) in the recent National Sporting Clays Championships in Tasmania. The individual cham-
pionship was won by Anthony Panetta (Victoria) with 205/225, followed by his teammate John Younger, 203 and Jeremy Kent (SA) and James Saliba, another Victorian, on 200 points. Shawyer, shooting in the veteran’s class, finished 33rd amongst the overall number of 278 competitors with 181 points, while young Kailan Markham was 68th scoring 171. Of the other Renmark

and Berri shooters involved, Pros Vander Zalm and Tony Trevorrow finished on 163/225, Steve Markham (runner-up in B grade) scored 158 and Deanna Vander Zalm 148. After winning the sub junior title in 2010, Kailan Markham finished third in a close finish. Prior to travelling to the National event Kailan had won the State sub junior title.

Will there be a return of the Bolting Horse Ballet? Kroemer, both who wore the club’s guernsey for over twenty years. I got a place in the ballet cast along with our leading lady ‘Winnie’ Ziersch, so it was hardly a twinkle toes lot. However, someone got serious. They appointed qualified dance teachers and boy they were strict. They frocked us up so well that we were all candidates for any belle of the ball awards that may have been up for grabs. They wanted the show to be a laugh so they figured that would more than likely be the outcome if we tried to be serious. Of course we did need a bit of padding here and there
to complete the image but this is where the serious approach literally came undone. My memory is not perfect, as getting dressed was thirsty work, but in our opening either ‘Joe’ or ‘Frosty’ had to do a bit of a solo introduction. Unfortunately with the audience hanging on every move as they swirled and curled, one of their ‘oranges’ came adrift and took off right down the centre of the dance floor. I do not recall whether he retrieved it and put it back into its holster or continued on a bit lopsided but the serious approach had gone, the mood was broken. On second thoughts, leave the Bolting Horse Ballet in receivership.

■ I READ the world famous Bolshoi Ballet Theatre is about to re-open its doors in Moscow after a six year, controversial, restoration project. The news got me wondering whether we will ever see a return to such breath taking performances as those that belonged to the not so famous Bolting Horse Ballet of the 1960s. The group featured at the Loxton Football Club’s cabarets of that era that used to attract capacity crowds to the local RSL club rooms. In the Bolting Horse cast were a number of Tiger players and officials of the time, including, I recall, two legends of the club, ‘Big Joe’ Westbrook and ‘Frosty’

LOXTON leg spinner Shaun Reilly has joined the likes of former Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait to be awarded a Les Favell Foundation scholarship. The prestigious award helps support young cricketers in South Australia achieve their dreams of playing at the highest level. Reilly, who is playing grade cricket with Tea Tree Gully this season, will use the scholarship to help cover travel costs and further his cricket career. The 18-year-old is currently in the South Australian under 19 state squad and is hoping to
make the final team to compete in the nationals next year. Reilly said being awarded the scholarship will help him pursue his cricket goals. “It’s an honour and I really wasn’t expecting it,” he told the Riverland Weekly. “You work on your strengths and try and master what you do best.” Currently Reilly is training up to six times a week with Tea Tree Gully and the under 19 state squad and he said his bowling continues to improve.
