WATER SECURITY underpins sustainable farming, but it is not the only issue that needs to be addressed. In fact the Riverland’s more efficient irrigation practices, which are heavily reliant on electricity, meant its irrigators were being hit harder than their interstate counterparts by its skyrocketing price, according to Member for Chaffey Tim Whetstone. Mr Whetstone addressed the viability of farm businesses which were being hit with higher costs for fuel, fertiliser, chemicals and electricity, but receiving less benefits from research and development, in his submission to the Select Committee on Sustainable Farming Practices, when it met in Renmark on Tuesday. He said the Riverland’s 3000 farming businesses needed less government red tape to keep the cost of running their businesses down. Mr Whetstone was scathing of the way that research and development had been

That was largely because it had been able to adapt to new varieties more quickly - and been guided to meet where markets were headed. Mr Whetstone said Riverland farmers were far more reliant on irrigation than other areas of the State, because of less reliable rainfall and governments needed to look at ways to “assist us as a region”. “Workcover is twice the national average,” Mr Whetstone said. “Power is going to be one of the big issues negating what we have gained over 40 years with water efficiency. “South Australia’s electricty is the dearest in the world. “Obviously we need more competition in the market place.”

Local links when Eberts play EBERT IS a name synonomous with Port Adelaide football and one with plenty of Riverland connections. When Port Adelaide take on Melbourne in Sunday’s NAB cup game at Renmark on Sunday both Brad and Brett Ebert will be there. This week the Riverland Weekly spoke to Brad Ebert, who has recently found himself elevated to vice captain at Port Adelaide, after returning to South Australia from the West Coast Eagles for the 2012 AFL season. He is expecting to see quite a few family members watching the game, given that his Grandpa Albert Elbert lives in Loxton, as does his Uncle Bill Ebert. Of course the other Ebert name commonly recognised is that of football

Not only is Brad looking forward to this pre-season game because of his family connections, but also because his only “out of Adelaide” pre-season game in 2012 was only to Victor Harbor. “It is not a country trip really,” Brad said. “Hopefully we can travel as a team.” He is enjoying playing the the same team as his cousin Brett Ebert and said the two cousins “definitely are” close.

About to turn 23 within a few weeks, Brad is enjoying his role as Power vice captain. “It is a great honour to be part of the leadership group,” Brad said. “I guess with the team going forward this year I am pretty hopeful and pretty confident. “The way the boys have been training and the way we have been playing. “I am confident that we will have a big improvement.” That said, “St Kilda had a pretty young side” when Port Adelaide defeated it in round one of the NAB Cup - as did the Power. “We showed some signs“ of improvement he said but play still needed to be tightened up.

Health and safety legislation changes affect volunteers too Representatives from SafeWork SA will deliver an information session about the new work health and safety legislation and the important role of health and safety during a visit to Berri next week. Australia to hear first-hand about workplace safety reform,” SafeWork SA executive director Bryan Russell said. “Nearly 1000 people registered for the 12 sessions held in Adelaide in December and January, and we want to offer access to the same information to the Berri community. “These sessions are for people working in any sector who want to find out how the work health and safety laws will affect them,” Mr Russell said. “We will be able to answer

your questions about work health and safety in agriculture, small business or volunteering.” SafeWork SA officials will visit a total of four regional centres in March to share information about the new laws. The sessions will also support health and safety representatives by providing advice and information about their duties and entitlements under the legislation. “These representatives play vital roles in workplaces across the state, helping to ensure that

everyone has a safe place to work,” Mr Russell said. The Work Health and Safety Act took effect on January 1, bringing South Australia in line with most other jurisdictions who have adopted the nationally harmonised workplace safety legislation. “The new laws aim to provide workers across Australia with consistent laws and the same standard of protection regardless of where they work or the type of work they do,” Mr Russell said.

Almonds push to lead world stage IMPROVING TRADE relationships and increasing exports is the aim of an Australian almond industry delegation that will be in attendance at Gulfoods, the world’s biggest annual food and hospitality show in Dubai. The show started on Monday and will have approximately 65,000 trade visitors from 152 countries go to the four-day show. Led by the Almond Board of Australia’s chief executive officer Ross Skinner and deputy chairman Brendan Sidhu, the delegation includes representatives from Australia’s four largest almond exporters: Almondco Australia, Nut Producers Australia, OLAM Australia and Select Harvests Ltd. Mr Skinner said the locals would host a trade forum designed to strengthen ties with existing customers and brief representatives of the nut trade on the premium

quality of this season’s Australian almond crop “that is expected to be a record 70,000 tonnes”. “The willingness of the marketers to work together on the industry initiatives to develop overseas markets is a major positive for the Australian almond industry as we focus on increasing export sales by 50 percent to clear the 2013 crop,” Mr Skinner said. “With Australian production levels increasing from year to year, increasing export sales is crucial and building the relationship with the trade in India and Middle East is vitally important to achieving this and hence our presence at Gulfoods as part of a global program of trade fairs covering Asia, Western and Eastern Europe during the past year”. “The Middle Eastern region and India are our biggest export markets and we ex-

pect this to continue “Consumers in these regions are aware of the health and wellbeing benefits that almonds give them, as well as being used as traditional gifts during various festivals. “The quality of product is important and we are very pleased with the early reports of the excellent product that has been harvested so far this season..” The expected Australian crop of 70,000 tonnes produced from the 30,000 hectares of orchards in the Murray Valley will move Australia past Spain to be the world’s second largest producer of almonds but still well behind the US where almonds are the major horticultural crop grown in California. With the recent lift in the global price for almonds it is estimated that the revenue from Australian almond exports will be more than $400million in 2013.

Loxton Mardi Gras hailed a success

Full steam ahead for 2013 PLANNING IS already underway for the 2014 Loxton Mardi Gras with the theme of “Allstars” set for next year’s event. Mardi Gras chairman Peter Magarey said the committee hoped ambassadors entrants would take up the challenge to fundraise for their community now. “We have been planning next year’s for about a month and a half,” Mr Magarey said. “We are looking to involve the previous ambassadors and previous ambassador entrants. “We would like to bring them back on display and to have them mentor new entrants throughout 2013 and work together on a program of their choice.” He said “next week” wasn’t too soon to get started and he believed there was at least one possible entrant interested. “We are quite literally looking at seriously starting very early this year,” he said. Ingenious floats a highlight INGENIOUS floats and strong community participation were the highlights of the 56th Loxton Mardi Gras on the weekend. Mardi Gras chairman Peter Magarey said between 2000 and 3000 had attended this year’s Mardi Gras, “a little bit up on the last couple of years”. “I think the participation of the community and their enthusiasm, were the highlights for him. “So many people did so much to have some ingenious floats,” Mr Magarey said. “I was also pleased with the ambassador program. “We had difficulty getting enough in the first instance but they responded very well and did a terrific job in the time available.” Between them the junior ambassador, ambassador and senior ambassador entrants raised $23,000. He believed the number of people watching the parade may have been down slightly but only because more people

took part in the parade itself. “I thought the Mardi Gras went very well ... with good contributions from the local community. He said there were “52 floats and 26 vehicles this time - they were a little bit up on last year”. The “Recycled” theme was well received. “People latched on to last year;s theme (Year of the Farmer) and they have done it again this year,” Mr Magarey said. “I think most of you will certainly agree with me that the parade was up to expectations.” Most outstanding float was won by Loxton Lutheran School, with its robots made by the students themselves. Best themed float was that of St Albert’s School. Loxton Ladies’ Probus Club members “recycled themselves to babies” enjoying themselves and taking out the most humorous float award. Hotel upgrade boosts tourism and jobs The Loxton Hotel $1.7 million redevelopment has already generated increased employment, tourism and conference opportunities for the Riverland. That’s according to Regional Development Minister Gail Gago who officially opened the project on Tuesday. he Hotel received a $865,484 grant from the Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund towards its renovations. Ms Gago said the fund is working well to stimulate economic activity and assist in creating jobs in the region. “This renovation has already generated increased employment, tourism and conference opportunities for the Riverland and is a prime example of how these grants have worked to stimulate growth in the region,” Ms Gago said. “It is very satisfying to be officially opening such a successful, community-focused project, and I congratulate everyone involved. She said the project had an “important impact on the community”. Room occupancy and length of stays had both risen already as a result of the renovations. “I think you will all agree with me that it is a great investment in the future,” Ms Gago said. “This is an important day for Loxton.” Hotel board chairman Wendy Mudge spoke of the board’s pride in what it had achieved and its plans to continue improving the hotel. “We are immensely proud of this facility and the amount of work that goes into it,” Mrs Mudge said.

Riverland Tourism Committee split over calls to disband THE RIVERLAND Tourism Association Committee has called a special general meeting on March 20 to put a motion to dissolve itself. Two members have put the motion calling for the dissolution of the associaiton, with funds and assets to be passed on to a similarly structured tourism based organisation. The meeting will be held at Bella Lavender Farm, Winkie. However the committee will be recommending a vote against this motion, as it strongly feels the need for the continuation of a mem-

bership based organisation reporting to its members, and where committee members are elected by the membership on a two-year term basis. Additionally expenditure of all revenues is reported annually to membership with a comprehensive profit and loss statement. The committee wishes to apologise to members that a number of our initiatives to bring more visitors into the Riverland, have had to be put on hold, whilst addressing concerns over legal liabilities of the election of current committee members.

Riverland projects in line for funding RENMARK’S town centre revitalisation, development of the Waikerie Sports Precinct and wetland walking trails and recreation space are all in the running to receive Regional Development Australia funding. Regional Development Australia Murraylands & Riverland has welcomed the announcement of the projects proceeding to full application stage for rounds three and four of the Regional Development Australia Fund. The above projects are in the running to receive grants between $50,000 and $500,000 per project. Mindarie Connect, a project submitted by District Council of Karoonda East Murray, under consideration for a round four grant as a for priority regional

infrastructure projects. Projects are encouraged to leverage funding from state and local governments and the private sector to maximise the value of the grant to regional communities. The projects selected to proceed to the final stage of the application process will deliver real benefits to local communities. Regional Development chairman Neil Martinson said it had to make some hard decisions and selected projects that met clearly identified regional priorities. “We received a number of high quality project proposals and it was difficult to choose those that will proceed to the final stage of the application process,” Mr Martinson said.

“The projects chosen took into the account the priorities of our Regional Plan and other identified community priorities, and address the needs of the region. “The projects are backed by a strong level of community support and are ready to proceed. They will each have a positive long-term impact on our region and neighbouring regions.” Other Riverland and Murraylands projects selected to proceed to full application included the Swan Reach Town Hall Redevelopment, Tailem Bend Motorsport Park facilities upgrade, a function centre for Murray Bridge Racing Club Function Centre and a revitalisation project in Murray Bridge for the town centre bridge and Sixth Street.

Senator Ruston said she was very concerned about the future of small horticultural exporters operating in South Australia. “Where these small exporters previously incurred costs of only a few hundred dollars per year in order to access overseas ‘protocol’ markets, they are now being hit with an annual charge of $8530,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a big business or a small one, the charge is the same. “Small packers who only send a few pallets of fruit overseas over a short period every year are being charged the same as big businesses who export thousands of tonnes all year. “This is one of devastating impacts of Labor’s move to full cost recovery, and in particular its removal of the 40 percent rebate for services analysis reading of 0.215%, after he was detected driving on Peake Terrace, Waikerie, at about 2pm that afternoon. His vehicle was impounded and he will appear in a court at a later date.

Also of interest was the letter the following week from David and Shirley Moritz relating to this article titled “Looking into rates”. Congratulations must go to the local council for actively encouraging the RV traveller, of which there are many hundreds of thousands, to spend some time in your community. The facility mentioned at Martin’s Bend in Berri is excellent as are the areas provided at both Loxton and

Renmark and I am sure that the one proposed for Barmera will be met with much enthusiasm when it is up and running. As to the issue that ratepayers are funding these projects, most probably they are to some extent but it should be seen as an investment in the ongoing prosperity of your community. The RV traveller does not just park up and sit in their vehicle. Concerned about Bamera Hospital I WOULD like a question answered by our new Health Minister in reply to a statement made by the previous Minister Mr John Hill. His statement was that he has not cut money to the Bamera hospital when figures I have received show otherwise. These costs do not take into account the cost of increase on inflation. So a decrease at a time when the cost of living has gone up for things such as water, power, food and other needs for the daily running of a complex. If this is how Mr Hill does his sums, and the rest of the Labor party, it is no wonder that our State is broke. It appears Mr Hill thinks that it does not take any more work to look after 10 patients than it does to look after two. Perhaps Mr Hill cannot look past Gepps Cross. I have been a patient in the Bamera Hospital with eight and nine patients and the nurses have to run most of the time. They even stay back so that the next shift can catch up. Nurses have come to the room and stated that they are sorry but they have been too busy to give me my medication at the appointed time. I ask our new Berri Health Advisory Council, “are you concerned about Bamera or is the new building at Berri more important than Bamera?”. I think it is about time that we went back to the old board system where Bamera was not controlled by Berri. It seems to me that our local Health Advisory Council wants Bamera to close as a hospital and become just a nursing home. The Council does not appear to consider that a large number of people who go to the Bamera Hosptial do not have partners or cannot drive. At the cost of $50 each way, who can afford a taxi? There is no bus service as in Adelaide. Here is hoping our new Health Minister can do his sums better than the previous Minister did. Max Scholz Bamera

A financially viable, sustainable prawn farm hatchery, grow out and processing facility wolud be a boost for the Waikerie district. However, given operating costs, eg electricity, labour, water, management measures etc together with produce return prices in a competitive, internationally sourced environment, perhaps viability may be questionable. The public only has until 5pm on Friday, March 8 to respond to the development application which in part states; “At an appropriate time in the development of the project the applicant will be inviting the residents of Waikerie to a meeting to introduce them to the project and to explain the benefits to the community and

how the applicant will address environmental issues”. Surely, the time for such information/consultation should be before the development application is considered by the District Council of Loxton Waikerie. How will issues such as mosquito, midge, flies etc be monitored and controlled, so as to not detrimentally effect the health and/or lifestyle enjoyment of residents to the north through to the west of the project? How much money will it cost ratepayers to build a bitumised access roadway for approximately 1.7km, from Maggea Road to the southern edge of the property site? Given that the Council formerly owned the land, which has been sold to the applicant, who in the Council approved the sale, when and for waht price? The Council may have complied with legal requirements re public consultation, but, given the small print size of the advertised development application, the sale of land process, the short period of consultative time etc, were the Council’s actions acceptable, adequate or appropriate? Congratulations to political contender FINALLY A a candidate with passion for the rural scene. I would like to congratulate James De Barro for putting his cap in the ring as the National Party candidate for Barker. I am a person who contacts their local Member of Parliament regarding issues that can help or hinder our businesses progress and I always felt my queries were not taken seriously and not with passion. James, as I see it, has three lives: Firstly, with his family, which includes travelling and camping around Australia which exposes him to other regions/environments and standards. Secondly, his voluntary life in Keith, which includes many years as a volunteer ambulance officer, the Pony Club and most recently as chairman of the Keith Hospital Board. Thirdly, his working life as an agronomist both in the Tatiara and beyond, including the Kununurra area in WA. I joined James on a work trip to the Kununurra recently and was amazed by his passion and concern for issues to do with agriculture, even though some didn’t have a direct financial return to his business. James will not have all the answers, but as an information gatherer we can be assured that he will get up to speed on all the issues he is presented with during the campaign and as a Member of Parliament. The presence of James in this campaign will make the candidates show their cards and true colours as they will have to justify their position on issues that have a significant effect on the people and businesses of the electorate of Barker and Australia. So I wish James all the very best and look forward to this campaign as James De Barro, puts Barker back on the agenda for all parties. SOUTH Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s peak retail automotive industry group, the Motor Trade Association, as called for a series of changes to the Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s financial system in order to encourage business growth. In its submission to State Parliamentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Economic and Finance Committeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Inquiry into state taxation, the MTA has highlighted that there is no revenue crisis in the current system, but an expenditure crisis which must be addressed by the Inquiry. MTA chief executive officer John Chapman, said that the Government should be able to offset proposed tax relief to South Australian businesses by implementing and then meeting budget saving targets. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All too often we have seen saving targets not met which immediately puts pressure on the Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s budget,â&#x20AC;? Mr Chapman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are the highest taxing state on business, rather than being a state which is ttracting more businesses to add more revenue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And the best way to attract more businesses to South Australia, is by making our tax system more competitive with the other states. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is good for the economy and will be good for the state budget with an overall in-

he Glossop High School Continental next Thursday evening will be â&#x20AC;&#x153;bigger and betterâ&#x20AC;? than previous years. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s according to Continental coordinator Tony Milgate. He is encouraging those that havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t got children at the school to attend whether they have been in the past or not. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are going to have a stage with live entertainment from 6pm until 9.30pm,â&#x20AC;? Mr Milgate said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There will be all of the usual food and multicultural dishes.â&#x20AC;? That is somewhat of an understatement the list of food including the following: lamb on a spit; pizza; shaslicks, satays; hot potatoes; hot chips; Greek sweets; yiros; hamburgers; fairy floss and donuts. He was quick to add that the variety of beverages

on offer would include a â&#x20AC;&#x153;coffee shop with real coffeeâ&#x20AC;?. There will also be a wine tasting room, beer stall and soft drinks. Mr Milgate thanked those that have donated goods to the school for its major fundraiser - which is expected to be attended by about 5000 people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is big,â&#x20AC;? he said. Entertainment on stage will include singers, a band and karaoke. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are really encouraging people to attend this year, such as ex-parents whose students are no longer at the school, to come along,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are certainly hoping that with the entertainment people can come and enjoy it.â&#x20AC;?

A guest auctioneer will be keeping the bids flowing and there will be two raffles on sale - giving ticket buyers the chance to win $1000 in either of them - for the investment of a $1 ticket. Staff, students and parents have been hard at work preparing for the continental. The schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s four houses, Deakin, Hughes, Parkes and McIntosh, have planned events on the night to raise money. Hughes is responsible for a fashion parade; Deakin for wine tasting; Parkes for the coffee shop; and McIntosh for the donuts and beer stall. It is an event the whole community looks forward to and helps bring the school community closer. However, it is the students that do much of the organising of events.

Restaurant to tempt Asian tastebuds OVERWHELMING feedback from their customers prompted Eric Fan and Kelly Cao to open the Riverland Hokkien Restaurant in Berri. The pair, which has owned Berri Noodle going on four years, has continued to receive positive feedback about their food from customers and decided to expand on their takeaway business. Inspired by traditional Chinese food, Riverland Hokkien Restaurant aims to provide a unique experience where the customer will experience the flavours of several different countries. From Chinese to Japanese, Korean and Malaysian, the extensive menu is sure to have a dish to suit just about everyone’s tastes. According to Eric and Kelly, there is nothing like the Wilson Street restaurant in the Riverland.

“The food we are serving will be very popular with the likes of roast duck and barbecue pork,” Eric said. “Customers really like Chinese foods, they are not too heavy and often have a lot of vegetables.” After expanding on his noodle range to include Chinese takeaway at Berri Noodle, Eric said it has been a hit with customers. “There is no Chinese restaurant in Berri and we’ve had so many customers telling us that we should open a restaurant,” Eric said. The new restaurant, which officially opened last night, will trade for dinner seven days a week, opening at 5pm. While the restaurant is still in the process of receiving a liquor license, there are many other unique options to quench your thirst such as the bubble pearl tea or

popular smoothies. Until Sunday, those dining at Riverland Hokkien Restaurant can receive a 10 per cent discount on their total dinner. Vegetarians are also catered for with some excellent choices. The meal would not be complete without trying deep fried icecream for dessert. New venture named in honour of home city Eric Fan and Kelly Caoâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s new venture is named in honour of their home city in China. The couple moved to the Riverland in 2006 when their daughter was a toddler. They had moved from China three years previously, living in Adelaide, when they decided to move to Berri with plans to open their own takeaway shop. It has been a busy time with the birth of their daughter Lily but the opening of the restaurant is a celebration of their hard work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is so much more space than where we came from,â&#x20AC;? Eric said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We named the restaurant after our home city in Hokkien. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For my family, freedom has been a big thing about living in the Riverland.â&#x20AC;? Their new venture, the Riverland Hokkien Restaurant, takes into account that many people want to dine as a family, with a kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playroom a real added bonus to the dining experience. ENJOY outstanding views of the River Murray as you sip your coffee at Waikerie United Viewpoint Cafe. The business has made major renovations recently removing a former residence to make way for a spacious cafe, complete with outdoor deck overlooking the river. The new area is largely the brainchild of Greg Maskell, who has returned to the family business after spending many years overseas in the hospitality industry. He saw it as imperative to take advantage of the fantastic views offered at the back of the service station cafe area. Prior to the upgrade, Greg said the cafe â&#x20AC;&#x153;just had a standard Vittoria coffee rangeâ&#x20AC;?. Now it uses the speciality bar Vittoria Coffee to make its range of coffees. People can enjoy freshly made food from Waikerie United such as rolls and Vietnemese rolls among the favourites. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our sandwiches are made fresh here,â&#x20AC;? Greg said They also stock pies and pasties and other goods from Loxton Country Bakehouse. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mum and another local lady made home-made vanilla slices and home-made cakes,â&#x20AC;? he said. Each Friday the cafe offers nine flavours of sushi made by Gregâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife Mamiko, who he met while working in Japan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just went for a three-month holiday and stayed for 10 years,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I managed bars and restaurants in Japan - mainly in Tokyo.â&#x20AC;? Berri to contest all four bowls grand finals By Graham Charlton

THE TOP two teams at the end of the minor round in all four divisions of men`s pennant bowls have gone on to grab berths in this Saturday`s grand finals but in some cases only after a dramatic start to the major round last weekend. 2012-13 will surely go down as ‘the season of last bowl decisions’? And none more spectacular as when Berri came from the clouds to score a one shot victory against Renmark in the first division qualifying second semi-final at Berri on Saturday. It even came down to a person from Waikerie telephoning the Berri clubrooms for an update on the position of the match to be told something like ‘they are on the last end and Renmark are three shots up and will win’. News of the ‘upset’ result quickly spread around the Waikerie greens but nobody was accounting for a big dose of ‘last bowl Mark Kubank magic’. Berri finally won two rinks all, 7675, with Kubank’s rink beating Neil Lemmey 23-18 and Dennis Treloar winning 17-14 from Sean Leesue. The final end between the Kubank and Lemmey rinks is worth reflecting on. Renmark had come with a late surge to grab a significant number of shots from the Craig Treloar and Andrew Hill rinks and led by four shots as the end commenced. Then after the leaders had finished Berri held one shot in the end, after the number two`s it was two then after the threes,three, meaning

Renmark were still one up overall. Lemmey`s first bowl unluckily just tickled the jack whereas if he had taken it out clearly the match would have been Renmark`s. Kubank evened the match with his first bowl and after Lemmey had left his second short won the game with his final bowl. Meanwhile at Renmark RSL there was definitely a thought that this season`s first division newcomer Loxton RSL could at least put regular finalist Loxton under some pressure but nobody could have predicted the rookie would win four rinks to nil, 101-56. Lew Westbrook, Steve Roberts and Ken Weeks all led their rinks to comfortable wins while Steve Rose won 21-20 over Terry Thurston. Sunday`s preliminary final was probably where finals experience came to the fore. Loxton RSL would have been cock’a’hoop on Saturday night after crushing its neighbour while Renmark had every reason to be shattered by its heart breaking last gasp loss to Berri. But next day it was Renmark that had the ‘business as usual’ sign back in place and the more experienced lineup won 88-67 to get another crack at Berri this week. Mind you three of the rinks on Sunday were closely contested but it was ironically Bill Dopson`s four that was the match winner for Renmark with a 31-11 win over Roberts. I say ironically because before Dopson recovered from a dozen or so shots down at half time to win

22-20 against Berri`s Andrew Hill the day before his rink had lost four on end at the concluding stages of the minor round. Now to the pennant decider. Berri will enter the game as favourite but going on the preliminary final blockbuster Renmark has not got a lot of ground to make up. Berri in fact will have a team in all finals on Saturday.

Division two IN SECOND division it went down 6352 on the back of Peter O`Donnell`s rink defeating Des Button 26-8 in Saturday`s qualifying Final against Renmark Gold but gained a rematch next day when it ended Moorook`s season 73-51. Moorook had won the elimination final 65-49 from Monash.

Division three IN THE third division grand final Waikerie plays Berri. On Saturday Waikerie defeated Berri, 81-46 and Barmera accounted for Loxton RSL 64-46 then on Sunday Berri came again with a 60-55 win over Barmera.

Division four IT IS the same story in fourth division. Waikerie after defeating Berri in the qualifying final narrowly 54-52 will meet it again for the premiership after Berri fought back with a 58-51 win against Barmera. In the elimination final Barmera had defeated Monash 62-48.

Loxton moves into grand final LOXTON GAINED a direct passage into the 2012-13 A grade softball grand final with an 11-6 victory over Berri in last Saturday`s qualifying match. Berri will now meet Cobdogla in the Preliminary Final at 4pm this Saturday at Glassey Park. In the qualifying final Loxton led throughout but in a high quality contest had to withstand some pressure that came through the big hitting of Berri`s Kenny Karpany and Kris Taylor. The reigning premier was best served by Tyler Flood, Cara Venning and Chelsea Hopper while Berri`s best were Taylor, Karpany and Chris Eleftheriadis. Talking to Loxton star Cara Venning she said “this has been a top season, one of the best competitions we have had for three or four years”. “All teams have beaten each other and Saturday`s game was terrific.” In B grade Loxton also advanced to the grand final when Jessica Voigt and Lauren Lidgerwood starred in a 20-13 win in the Qualifying game against Cobdogla (Gloria Dyer, Lyn Wutke). With Waikerie unfortunately forfeiting to Lyrup in the elimination final Cobdogla plays Lyrup to find a challenger for Loxton for the title. In C grade there was another forfeit by Waikerie to Loxton Blue which will now meet Berri in this weekend`s preliminary final after the latter went down to Renmark 12-7 in Saturday`s qualifier. Amy Selfe and Leanne Le were best for Renmark and Austin Karpany and Monica Dorshurst for Berri. There is no major round in Primary Grade but in matches played in conjunction with the senior finals on Saturday Renmark (Gemma Letton, Caitlan Kruger, Hamish McDonald) defeated Waikerie (Lucas Hocking, Aden Hocking, Makaylah Kuchel) in a close contest 11-10 and Berri (Tiarna Healy, Sammy Hauptman, Kasey Ferguson) beat Loxton (Deegan Rothe, Cody Hammerstein, Mikaela Flood).

RIVERLAND BASEBALL president Peter Brown has been talking about the encouraging development of some of the lower sides in the competition as the season has progressed and last Friday night it was Renmark White that broke through for its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory against Loxton. Loxton got away to an early lead 2-0 when Jarrad Cramer hit a home run in the second innings but in its third time at bat White hit the lead when three batters got home on Dean Beer`s two-bagger to centre field. Beer`s strong hitting brought a further three runs in the last innings. In other matches it took five runs in the dying stages of the contest for one of the pennant contenders Renmark Blue to shake off Lyrup 5-4 while Berri Red disposed of Berri Blue 17-1.

At a recent executive meeting of the ICC a proposal was put forward that instead of the two participating countries having to agree on the use of DRS it be a decision for the home country. But while nine of the ten countries represented at the meeting favour using the system non of the leaders involved were prepared to support the proposal once the Indian chief had again objected. It is a vicious circle. DRS is expensive and many believe the tab should be picked up by the ICC to introduce some uniformity. But the ICC says it cannot act unless India is part of it. Which really means ‘Money speaks all languages’.

CURRENT RIVERLAND Cycling Club champion Steve Jaensch and Angus Boase are training in preparation for Australia`s most challenging one day ride, the Three Peaks Challenge in Falls Creek, Victoria, on Sunday, March 10. The 13-hour ride over a 235km course passes through some of the world`s most picturesque yet challenging terrain with three major climbs, Tawonga Gap, Mount Hotham and the beast that is the back side of Falls Creek. This is the third year the pair have been at Falls Creek for the epic ride but this time they are without Nathan Gregurke who was also there in 2011 and 2012. Jaensch and Boase were also in France last year for the Tour De France and rode parts of the course. Talking to Jaensch he says “it is doubtful if the ride from Harrietville to the top of Mount Hotham will be part of the event this year because the road is only open to emergency vehicles dealing with serious bush fires in the area”. “If that section is out they will redirect us up and down Mount Buller instead”. No matter it will still remain challenging for our cycling journey men.

Shooters tackle tough conditions FIFTEEN COMPETITORS including some rejoining members from yesteryear and visitors from Loxton and Adelaide took part in a shoot at the Renmark Berri Field and Game range last Sunday in hot and tough conditions. In a Drawn Partners Handicap event Jo Brown and Rod Harper finished first with 166/150 followed by Mat Redway and Colin Nunn, 154/150, Warren Beer and Mark Rover, 145/150 and Mark Pahl and Marlene Tucker 145/150. Off Gun both Haydn Brown and Nunn shot 55`s, Steve and Kailan Markham and Redway 54`s and Ray Pash a 53. The club will hold the first State team qualification shoot on March 24.

Renmark White records first win

Not a born optimist I HAVE raised this point previously. I concede that when it comes to sport I am not a born optimist but I refute a claim by a football committee colleague of many years ago that I am an out and out pessimist. I see nothing wrong with making every effort to be a realist. Which brings me to say that as far as a lot of sports both in Australia and around the world are concerned today`s situation can only be described as ‘turmoil’. To single out a couple that impact the most on our own region firstly take the AFL. Am I reading this right or has a club been found not guilty of a charge of a misdemeanor but heavily fined anyhow and anybody within a drop punt of the offence that was not committed suspended? And cricket? I have mentioned this too on previous occasions. How over a decade ago I reacted with ridicule and scoffed at a suggestion from a young lass that worked with me that some close matches of the time had been “rigged”. THE THIRD Points Carnival last Friday night and Riverland Distance Championships on Sunday meant a full weekend of swimming. The points meeting was held at Loxton and the distance championships at Berri`s Hayden Stoeckel Pool. The Points Carnival lived up to the reputation of the third one of the season being the most exciting with Renmark finishing on 241 points, Berri 229, Loxton 148 and Waikerie 97. The program consists of 200 metres individual medley, 200m freestyle and, in the second half, relay events. The final two events are the 8 X 50m freestyle and 4 X 100m. medley championship relays with each team requiring twelve swimmers of sufficient standard for those events as each swimmer can only compete in one of the races. Renmark won the first relay from Berri but Berri fought back to win the 4 X100 event. The distance championships on Sunday had events over 200, 400 and 800 metres and it was pleasing to see younger swimmers like nine year old Shiara Langler competing in 800m freestyle, 200m backstroke, 200m breaststroke and 400m freestyle events Final team scores were Berri 303 points, Renmark 161, Loxton 96 and Waikerie 11. Amongst the swimmers to win gold medals were Emily Millar (Berri) 4, Timothy Trewren, Emily Kassebaum (Berri), Lauren Reichelt, Brooke Reichelt, 3, Brock Verrall, Michael Kassebaum, Nikki Harwood (Berri), Rhys Jennings, Codey Lambert, Lauren Anderson (Renmark), Ashlee Reichelt (Loxton) 2, Matthew Nourse (Berri), Shay Hawkins, Courtney Donaldson, Chelsea Webb (Renmark) 1. This Sunday at Berri the Riverland Sprint Championships will be held. With a number of triathlons heading to our region in 2013 local competitors like Jacob Otto and Ruth Strout are going to be well prepared for the events. Early this month the pair competed in an Olympic distance race at Kingston South East and on Sunday, February 17 they were at

Coomealla`s Euston Grand Prix triathlon. Ruth also took part in the club`s Fishers IGA 2.5km swim the previous day. At Kingston Ruth had a cycling ‘shocker’ but a good swim and even better run and Jacob in the Open Elite class finished fifth in a strong group of 10. Then in the non wet suit Coomealla swim where entrants were bused from Euston (NSW) to Robinvale (Victoria) for a swim back to Euston Ruth was amongst a field that included a group of triathletes from the Victorian Institute of Sport and was the sixth female out of the water and the first female age grouper to finish. On Sunday in the triathlon which consisted of a 700m swim, 8km cycle ride and 2km run she was the ninth female across the line and first in her age group. Again in that event Jacob competed in the Open Elite category and in a tough field that includes some AIS athletes finished in a commendable fifth place. Talking to Jacob about both events he acknowledged that he still has some work to do on his swimming as those legs had let him down somewhat when his running and cycling was strong. Jacob maintains a heavy work load in the sport travelling to Adelaide regularly as a member of the Triathlon Development Squad. This has included a ‘Coach`s Course’ where he said “we were guinea pigs for the coaches, had sessions in the velodrome and also went through everything involved in triathlons right down to diet and health”. Last week at West Lakes he contested the State School Sports trials for the National championships and won the event so he will be amongst the top five finishers to go to Penrith in April for the titles. Then last weekend he competed in the Oceania World Championships for Junior High Performance athletes in Devonport and this weekend he will enter the Renmark triathlon.

Mid Murray cricket grand final to be a rematch MINOR PREMIER Waikerie Gold will meet defending champion Blanchetown Swan Reach in a rematch of the 2011-12 grand finalists to decide the 2012-13 premiership in the Mid Murray Cricket competition at Waikerie this Saturday. Placed third at the end of the minor round BSR found the premiership form that has deserted it for much of this season to eas-

ily beat Perponda in last Saturday`s semi final at Perponda and will now chase its third title on end. Opening batsman Scott McKenzie batted through the BSR innings to remain undefeated on 101 while number three Max Martinson scored 59 in a total of 5 for 219. Berry flies to podium finishes By BEV STORY FORMER Berri man Nickolas Berry snuck under the radar of pre-Nippy’s Loxton Gift Carnival predictions to record podium finishes in both the 70m and 300m events on Saturday. Berry, 23, won his heat in the MGA

Insurance Brokers 70m novice - despite starting off a 7.5m handicap. He finished second in the final, on a photo finish, running 7.739 seconds, to Graham Harris. It required a photo finish to separate the top three place-getters in the Big River Riverland Supermarkets 300m Open

- Berry’s other event - where he finished third in 33.21 seconds, again after winning his heat. The former Loxton High School student is the son of Jon and Joanna Berry, who still live in Berri, and has worked in Adelaide for the past three years.

He trains two hours a night - five nights a week and competes in athletics meetings in Adelaide every two weeks. One of his noteable successes in the South Australian Athletic League program this year came when he made the semifinal of the 70m novice event at the Bay Gift carnival.
