SOLVING SHORTAGE

Former school could become backpacker accommodation

THE vacant Lyrup Primary School may be the answer to the Riverland’s shortage of backpacker accommodation. Following the closure of the school in December last year, the Lyrup Community Club put forward the idea of converting the facility into backpacker accommodation or a caravan park.

REPORT BY

BRAD PERRY With Renmark Paringa Council continually being approached over the past 12 months about the possibility of developing

backpacker style accommodation to address a need, chief executive officer Tony Siviour said the idea has merit. During Tuesday’s monthly meeting, council agreed in principle to support the concept without committing to any funding to potentially purchase the former school property.

“Given the situation at Lyrup with a lot of large holdings out that side of the river, it could be a really good spot (for backpacker accommodation),” he said. “We don’t think strategically it’s worth us purchasing the property. “We don’t think that’s in the community’s best interest but we think there is a a facilitation process

we can provide there. “We’ve had people come to us and talk about backpacker accommodation, so I think if that opportunity arises again then we can facilitate that process.” ■ Continued Page 2

THE Renmark Club has officially expressed interest in the site of the Westpac building located on Murray Avenue to build accommodation. Currently the building is being leased by the Westpac Banking Corporation until June, 2014. Following that period, if Westpac renews the lease it can do so for a further five years. In a letter to the Renmark Paringa Council, Renmark Club president Sam Albanese said acquiring the site would be beneficial to the region. “If the building becomes available, the Renmark Club would be interested in acquiring the site to build apartments accommodation,” he wrote. “We believe this will enhance the Renmark town centre and compliment the current Renmark town centre revitalisation plan (RTCRP). “The Renmark Club has agreed to support the RTCRP financially to bring life back to the town centre.” Renmark Paringa Council chief executive officer Tony Siv-

iour said the current Westpac site is “a valuable piece of land”. “The Club is not the only person who have showed interest in it,” he said. “A previous council had a resolution that it be returned to open space, so we’d have to consider all, whether it is leased, returned to open space or sold. “Through the whole process of the Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund and some work SATC have done, they’ve identified the Riverland lacks in four and five star accommodation, so obviously we would support four and five star accommodation in the Riverland.”

Backpacker idea ■ From Page 1 It is anticipated that Lyrup Primary School will be “declared surplus to the requirements” of the State Government, the property will then be offered to all other government agencies and then to the local council. If no party purchases the property, a real estate agent will be appointed and it will be placed on the market. “It will be offered to council and obviously we’ll ask the question but I don’t think there is any real benefit to us actually purchasing it, if anything I think it is a risk,” Mr Siviour said.

“It’s really just seeing an opportunity, if someone comes to us and says to us ‘we want to set up backpacker accommodation in your district’ which we’ve had several, we can say ‘here’s some opportunities’.” Meanwhile, council will seek expressions of interest for the old Renmark High School building with Mr Siviour not ruling out that it could also potentially be used as backpacker accommodation. “We’ve had someone come and say we are interested in the old high school,” he said. “We want to put it out to the whole community and say ‘who has got the best proposal for us to consider?’”

Two year wait for dentist appointment rings alarm bells 21 months. I am sure we all have stories about waiting to have a tooth looked at, unsure if it is serious enough to request an emergency appointment. Looking after your teeth is important and you have to wonder how everyone kept them healthy with a five year wait in 2002. I’m lead to believe that dentists are receiving a 20 per cent

pay rise on top of the 30 per cent extra they receive for working in regional areas. Surely this is enough incentive to move to the Riverland and help reduce our waiting lists. However, I agree with Australian Dental Association state president Jack Gaffey who believes more needs to be done to set up a permanent system to ensure the Riverland will con-

tinue to have dentists. Offering dental graduates a subsidy off of their study fees with an agreement to work in regional areas for the first two or three years is a plausable concept. We often wait lengthy times to see doctors, so we should all be used to the delay in being able to book in to see a dentist. We are used to it but it does not mean we agree with it.

Two year wait to see public dentist RIVERLAND residents are being placed on waiting lists of up to two years to see a dentist, the fourth worst in country South Australia. SA Dental Service figures have revealed that Riverlanders are waiting 20.9 months on public waiting lists to visit a dentist. While the average waiting time has reduced from 62 months in 2002, Australian Dental Association state president Dr Jack Gaffey said the Riverland is “a poor second best when it comes to treatment. “That has improved, it doesn’t mean it was good back then or it’s good now, it just means that it has gone from very bad to bad, he said.

“It’s a very long wait that results in people having a higher chance of losing their teeth because decay can happen over that sort of period of time resulting in a small hole becoming a big hole, becoming a tooth ache and then someone losing their tooth.

moment it seems like the Riverland is a poor second best when it comes to treatment. “You go to places like Murray Bridge, which is not super rural but they’ve got a waiting list of nine months or Whyalla with six months and then you look at the Riverland which is 21 months,

It’s a very long wait that results in people having a higher chance of losing their teeth. “Two years just to be seen is unacceptable. “The State Government has built facilities in some areas and not others and they are working their way through things but at the

close to two years. Expansions of dental clinics are currently occurring in Berri and pay increases of 20 per cent for public dentists may help attract dentists to the Riverland.

“It’s a big question about what the State Government’s going to do to help fix areas like the Riverland because there are different waiting list times throughout rural areas, Dr Gaffey said. “The state and the federal governments needs to be focused on making sure they provide sufficient funds to keep reducing these waiting lists. “What’s happened in the past is the State Government has received money for dentistry from the federal government and then it gets wooshed out the back door to health. “Our concern is the new federal government money, which is expected in the next three to six months, may be diverted to

other areas. Putting in place programs to attract dentists to rural areas is crucial in reducing the waiting list, according to Dr Gaffey. “If the government pays for you to go through your course and then you pay them back (by working in the country), it’s a successful program that works in the military and that’s why a number of dentists join the navy and airforce, he said. “It’s a way of getting people in without actually paying an arm and a leg for it. “We need to get the private sector involved in treating public patients and the only way to do that is to get more dentists into the country.

Work begins on the Riverland’s newest luxury accommodation WORK has begun on the historic luxury accommodation overlooking the River Murray at Paringa which is expected to fill a niche market in the Australian tourism industry. Despite starting later than anticipated, award winning luxury accommodation owners Cathy and Rick Edmonds are hoping to have the three “retreats finished by the end of the year. Earth works have begun at the site known as The Natury, with the concrete likely to be poured in the coming weeks, all with the use of local traders. Mr Edmonds likened the project to Kangaroo Island’s five star Southern Ocean Lodge and the impact it has had on tourism in the area. “Hopefully we will be able to become the same sort of thing,

something that everyone recognises and is positive for the area, he said. “A very high class six star accommodation, while there is some around Australia, there is not a lot of it. “It’s certainly going to be different for the Riverland but also for the state and Australia. “We seriously believe there is a niche in the market we will be able to fill. The timeframes for The Natury includes the steel infrastructure for the three retreats to be in place by March. So far the project has created a lot of interest, according to Mr Edmonds. “We’ve got a lot of support from SA Tourism and media and

we’ve already had some national magazines contact us about it, he said. “We’ve actually got a logo that is going to be part of our media releases and on our cars, that we are changing the way people see the Riverland. To connect all of the properties owned and operated by the Edmonds, the pair have developed ‘The Cooltong Experience’ brand, which they hope will become a hallmark of excellence, luxury and privacy and can be seen on the businesses’ new vehicles. ■LUXURY: The Natury owners Rick and Cathy Edmonds with plans for the luxury accommodation at the Paringa cliffs location.

Business Riverland supports concept but questions...

RV park management BUSINESS Riverland has raised questions over the 24-hour management of a recreation vehicle (RV) park proposed for Barmera. During its most recent meeting, Business Riverland members agreed to support the town as RV friendly stating the concept would be beneficial for businesses in the town. However, Business Riverland president Barry Phillips said the 24-hour management of the RV Park needs to be addressed before one is established in Barmera. “When it comes to whose going to manage it, what if an RV van arrives at 10pm at night, who is going to take the fee?” he said. “We would like to see a very strong management plan in place to see people looked after. “At the end of the day it will be council making the decision and coming up with how the operation would work.” Mr Phillips said there are still many questions to be answered including whether Bruce Oval is the best location for the park but

■ HOLIDAY: There has been much debate about a proposed RV park for Barmera. agreed that people will be able to have their say during the public consultation phase. He said tourists have a choice on where to stay in the region. “It’s an individual situation and I believe that people can’t be controlled where they stay,” Mr Phillips said. “If it (RV friendly) can work in

Loxton then it should be able to work in Barmera.” It is understood the Berri Barmera Council will meet with the Barmera Lions Club early next month to further discuss the RV park issue. A number of tourist operators have spoken out against the proposed RV park site at Bruce Oval in Barmera.

Public bins overflow in Blanchetown

■ WASTE: A reader’s photo of the overflowing public rubbish bins at Blanchetown over the New Year holidays and (inset) a photo sent to the Riverland Weekly at the same time last year. PUBLIC rubbish bins in prime holiday spots of Blanchetown have been overflowing as residents call for extra facilities to help tidy the area. Over the Christmas and New Year period, residents were seen piling rubbish onto already overflowing bins in Blanchetown. A shack owner, who visits the popular town ev-

is not just enough there for the sheer amount of people that come down for the weekend and for weeks on end.” The shack owner said she watched people throwing rubbish on top of bins in early January, which were already over flowing. “As you drive in that’s what you are seeing, a pile of disgusting rubbish,” she said.

“As a ratepayer I find it really quite frustrating.” Following concerns from the public, in early January last year the Mid Murray Council denied claims that overflowing public rubbish bins were not being emptied for up to a week and said it had received no complaints about rubbish in Blanchetown.

Walking areas unsafe? Nightclub incident causes broken tooth, intense pain BARMERA residents are calling on upgrades of paths and walking areas across the town due to what they call “unsafe” spots. A local resident named Beverley, who has lived in the area for the past 21 years, said her husband no longer walks around the town due to wearing areas of pathway. “To me it’s very dangerous because a lot of elderly people walk around here,” she said. One of the main problem areas in recent months pointed out by locals is between the Barmera Visitor Information Centre and the Bonney Theatre. It is understood the hole in the middle of the road is part of the theatre’s works. “You cross here and there is this big hole,” Beverley said.

“I just feel this part has been like this for too long.” Following enquiries by the Riverland Weekly, the Berri Barmera Council addressed the problem area last week by refilling the hole, which had deteriorated due to recent rains. A Berri Barmera Council spokesman said the road and pathway networks around Barmera are constantly reviewed. “People are welcome to put in requests if they think there is something that our attention needs to be drawn to,” the spokesman said. “They are welcome to ring up council and put in a works request and we’ll have a look at it and decide whether it is a safety issue or a maintenance item, or something that should be taken a little bit further.”

Woman bottled A WOMAN has been forced to go through ongoing dental treatment and severe pain after her front tooth was broken when a bottle was thrown in a local nightclub on the weekend. Between 10.45pm and 11.15pm on Saturday, the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, was struck in the mouth by a bottle while on the dance floor at the Devine Nightclub in Loxton. Local police are currently seeking assistance in identifying or locating the person responsible. “I was having a great night out with friends when I was hit in the face with an empty glass bottle someone had thrown into the crowded dance floor,” she said. “I fell to the ground hoping I still had all my teeth. “When the bottle hit my face, it cracked my right front tooth in half.” The woman said she is extremely disappointed

Mid Murray, Karoonda East Murray part of broadband plans THE Mid Murray and Karoonda East Murray Councils will be amongst the first areas of regional South Australia to receive high speed National Broadband Network (NBN) fixed wireless. The company building Australia’s National Broadband Network, NBN Co, last week unveiled the local government areas where planning proposals will be lodged to deliver high-speed fixed wireless broadband. Over the coming months, NBN Co and its design and construction partners will work with local governments to identify appropriate locations for fixed wireless network infrastructure in parts of the Murraylands, South East, Far South East and Kangaroo Island. “NBN Co’s plan (is) to deliver highspeed broadband to every Australian home and business using one of three technologies – fibre, fixed wireless and satellite,” NBN Co’s community account manager Chris Gregory said. “Subject to final planning and other approvals, the fixed wireless network plans to cover parts of 10 council areas in South Australia and it is expected facilities will start to be switched on in stages from mid 2014. “This announcement is tremendous news for these regions, many of which have little or no access to high-speed broadband, or those confined to a limited service, such as dial-up or broadband over the mobile network. “Fixed wireless aims to deliver speeds and services that city people take for granted.”

Walking for Legacy MORE than 100 people are expected to take part in the Riverland’s RAR Stomp for Support on Australia Day, helping raise money for Legacy. The inaugural event in the region will coincide with RAR Stomp for Support events held across Australia on Australia Day. Riverland RAR Stomp for Support organiser Jason O’Malley said the event is aimed at raising funds for fallen troops from the Afghanistan conflict and many others. He said the support has been overwhelming with almost $18,000 raised towards the goal of $20,000 to go to Legacy. “There has been a lot of support,” Mr O’Malley said. “We have now been getting enquiries from people over the border in Mildura and down towards the Barossa and Gawler. “The more we can raise the better and the whole lot goes to Legacy.” The Stomp will begin from Berri with registrations to be held at the Post World War II Memorial on Riverview Drive from 6am on Saturday. Those participants coming from Loxton can take a courtesy bus from the Cross of Sacrifice at 5.30am and there is other bus services around Riverland towns.

With over 100 people involved, including a number of exservicemen and the SA regiment based in Berri, the walk will have several different starting points. From Berri, those involved in the full length of the walk will march up Bookpurnong Road before more join in from the 10 kilometre starting point at the Mildura turn off, the five kilometre starting point at the corner of Alamein Avenue and Bookpurnong Road and the final one kilometre start closer to Loxton. “Back in October when I first started looking at organising it, I didn’t expect it would be this big,” Mr O’Malley said. “It’s just been great that we can organise it in a small country precinct and still get the support and we are probably getting more support than a lot of other areas.” Plans are already underway to make the event bigger next year. ■ SUPPORT: Riverland RAR Stomp for Support organiser Jason O’Malley and (right) during a cheque presentation of $15,000 to Cops for Kids in Adelaide this week was (from left) Legacy’s Geoff Banks, Jason O’Malley, Cops for Kids’ Marty Burke, Legacy SA CEO Rainer Jozeps, Cops for Kids’ Alison Winterfield and Legacy’s Mark Taylor.

if more cargo capacity is needed, the rear seat flips down to become a cargo rack. “The rear seat flexibility in the Gator XUV 550 S4 is truly innovative,” Gigandet said. “The S4 can transport up to four people but for the times when you need to carry more gear, the back seat can become more useful in seconds and increase your cargo space by 32 per cent.” There are many attachments and accessories to customise all Gator XUV models, such as, cabs, brush guards, and custom alloy wheels. In addition to the XUV 550 and 550 S4, John Deere also offers the 625i, 825i and the 855D to round out its full line of crossover utility vehicles. The new Gator XUV 550 models are available for order right now from your local John Deere dealer, Riverland Farm Machinery in Renmark. Visit your local John Deere dealer or www.JohnDeere.com. au/xuv to learn more about our full XUV model line up.

Popular yabby race becomes Australia Day tradition

■ NIPPING UP THE RIVER: Racing club cadet steward Chris Dahms runs his eyes over a couple of the runners in this year’s Blanchetown Yabby Races. Photo: JON ORTLIEB

Blanchetown’s flying the flag By JON ORTLIEB AUSTRALIA Day, yabbies and carp – they’ve become synonymous with the holiday weekend in Blanchetown. From a simple idea by Blanchetown Hotel manager Trevor Hailstone more than two years ago, the Blanchetown Crustacean Racing Club was born and the Australia Day Yabby Races have become one of the biggest events in the town and the most significant fundraiser for the Blanchetown Combined Sporting Bodies. With $2000 raised in the first running of the yabby races, last year more than $3500 was rasied for the local sporting body that helps promote healthy activity and sporting activities for the town’s kids. This year there will again be 36 finelytuned yabbies being auctioned off for the races and the return of Clarry ‘Colossus’ Carp will again be a feature. Racing club officials continue to try and source the biggest carp possible for the annual ‘guess the weight’ competition and they have assured the public that this year’s is a truly a monster. Such is the growing popularity of this annual day, the Blanchetown Hotel has

been forced to extend the viewing facilities for the races that are conducted down a synthetic two-metre track. An extra viewing area will be added to the hotel’s outside deck to create a great atmosphere as everyone gathers around the edge of the deck to get a bird’s eye view of the races. “It’s all about providing for the punters and constantly improving the comfort and viewing facilities for the public,” Trevor said. This year’s races are being held on Sunday, January 27. After the auction of the 36 thoroughbred nippers, six heats will be run with the winners, second and third place-getters going into the Blanchetown Cup, Moorundie Mug and Paisley Plate respectively. Last year the Blanchetown Crew syndicate scooped $850 for their win with ‘She’s Zapples’ in the Cup, while the owner of ‘No Show’ claimed $650 for the win in the Mug and ‘Yabby Caviar’ saluted in the Plate for a return of $500 for its owner. Gates open for the races at the Blanchetown Hotel at 11am with an Australia Day barbecue lunch on offer and the auction for the yabbies kicking off at 12.30pm.

Mid Murray visit for California conservationists MEMBERS of the Californian Conservation Corps will be working in the Mid Murray region in the coming months. Conservation Volunteers regional program manager Tricia Curtis said the team who are aged betweem 18 and 25, will be a great boost to the conservation efforts at Brookfield Conservation Park which is managed by Conservation Volunteers on behalf of the State Government. “They are incredibly motivated and enthusiastic and have made a great impression on the communities they visit,” she said. 35 years. The teams will be assisting PhD student Jess Strauss with vegetation surveys in the park, which will help guide the region in the management of both plants and wildlife, including the state fauna emblem and the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat. Tricia said the Californian’s are looking forward to meeting the locals and hearing a ‘few yarns’. “It’s great when the locals come out and meet the CCC’s. It’s a great cultural exchange for young and old and a chance for them to see the good work the volunteers are doing in their community,” she said.

Sport store to close in Renmark RIVERLAND Premier Sports is planning to close its Renmark store after 18 years in the town’s business centre. The owners/directors Todd Charlton and Matthew Clifford have reluctantly reached the decision after all attempts to turn an unprofitable situation around have failed. “We do this with a heavy heart,“ Todd Charlton said. “But we cannot continue to sustain a loss at the store that is effecting our overall operations. “We have tried everything, providing a complete range of quality sporting goods and trying to keep prices competitive. “Over the years we have employed well known Renmark people but despite their valued endeavours it simply has not worked”. Matthew Clifford said “since I joined the business in Renmark it has always been a concern whereas the Berri store has continued to be a consistent performer”. “People are saying it is all about the position since the loss of stores from the Chaffey Colonnades site but they should remember that formerly we were on Ral Ral Avenue opposite banks, the post office and next door to a supermarket and we moved from there looking to increase a disappointing trade then. “Todd and I are extremely disappointed that we have had to take this action as we have had some tremendous support from the staff involved and also from a loyal band of regular

the town . “A number had tried in specialised stores previously but history tells us that it was hard work for many of those too and no one remained for the long haul. “Actually along the way we have purchased two businesses in the town on a ‘stock only’ basis so that tells a story.

Closing Renmark is really sad but it is finally an agreement with our financial people. “And of course we will go out of our way to make our Renmark customers welcome at all times.” Graham Charlton, who was involved in the founding of Premier Sports and now acts as a consultant for the business, said “it is a mystery why Renmark has never really got up and running and today, of course, there have been some notable changes to retail that have made things even more difficult”. “When we opened the store just before Christmas 1994 it was said that we were the first to provide the complete sports store range in

“We had thought of looking for someone interested in taking Renmark over at the same arrangement but frankly we could not have provided financials to support such a sale. “Closing Renmark is really sad but it is finally an agreement with our financial people who have repeatedly suggested we look at taking this action over the years because the outlet never ever reached a time where trading was consistently strong and the store profitable.” The business will commence a closing down sale shortly.

Infrastructure funding for Complex ■ SUCCESS: (From left) RDA business development manager Mark Bell and The Riverland Complex’s Peter Hoffmann following the funding announcement.

By NICOLE JACHMANN, RDA IT IS very pleasing that Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland, through the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund has been able to assist in securing a dollar for dollar $210,000 State Government grant for the Riverland. With a total project cost of $420,000, this will certainly be of great benefit to the economic and business development for the township of Berri and also the greater Riverland region. The potential for economic development in the area east of the Caltex roundabout through to Jellett Road/Shiel Road intersection in Berri, to the Riverland Complex Hoskins Road/Sturt Hwy intersection, will now be greatly increased. This is as a result of a successful Regional Devel-

opment Infrastructure Fund Grant being awarded to The Riverland Complex, to install infrastructure to supply filtered water and STEDS to this part of Berri. The supply of water and STEDS to this site, now paves the way for future potential investment of approx $12 millon in our region. Development in the area is currently restricted by the lack of such infrastructure, with no filtered water east of Caltex on the Sturt Highway. Water to business premises along this part of the Sturt Highway is currently pumped directly from the river via two private pipelines, with any new developers either totally reliant on rain water or required to install their own line or having to negotiate water use from existing private pipeline owners. After being unsuccessful in the Expression of Inter-

est round of the Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund for a project relating to the Riverland Complex, Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland worked with The Riverland Complex manager, Peter Hoffmann, to explore other funding alternatives. Peter and his team worked with RDA business development manager Mark Bell to apply to the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund, a South Australian government fund designed to assist with establishing infrastructure such as power and water where there is wider community benefit. The new infrastructure will now pave the way for future development of not only this site but also this area of Berri, allowing the likes of bulky goods retailers and other businesses to be attracted to the region (subject to council and other applicable approvals).

Barmera fast food outlet to shut within four days

Takeaway closure WITHOUT a buyer by Monday, January 28, popular Barmera takeaway Magik Lake Cafe will shut its doors and close the business down. While owner Gloria Whitehill believes there are still a number of loyal customers around the region, due to ill health, she said the Barwell Avenue business can no longer run with her involved. ing arrest. He was bailed to appear in the Berri Magistrates Court at a later date.

POLICE NEWS Urinating offence A 19-year-old Berri man was reported by police on Tuesday for urinating in a public place after he was allegedly observed by police at about 1.10pm in Worman Street at Berri urinating against a tree in full view of the public. He will receive a summons to appear in the Berri Magistrates Court at a later date.

Reversing without due care A 21-year-old woman from Glossop was reported at about 5.56pm on Tuesday for allegedly reversing a

Disturbance arrest AFTER allegedly causing a disturbance at a residence in Loxton and refusing to leave, a 55 -year-old man from Loxton was arrested in Pine Avenue at Loxton at about 10.30pm on Tuesday. He was charged with disturbing the peace and resist-

“I’d like to let people know that I just haven’t thrown in the towel,” she said. “Due to ill health I just can’t keep doing it. “I’ve just operated the business to get it by until the end of January to service the local town people and tourists during summer.” Mrs Whitehill said it will be sad to close the business, which opened in 2010. “This town needs this cafe and it’s not going to be here,” she said.

BETWEEN 9pm on Tuesday and 4.50am on 23 Wednesday an unknown person has entered a hostel in Barmera and stolen a bag containing personal papers and a blue coloured Acer Aspire laptop computer.

Bad behaviour A 43-year-old man from Renmark was arrested for allegedly behaving in a disorderly manner in Bookmark Avenue in Renmark at about 9.40pm Saturday. It is alleged that the man had been yelling, swearing and abusing people whilst standing in the middle of the road. He was bailed to appear in the Magistrates court.

Back to school planning tips for parents By Danny Kearney, Certified Financial Planner* AS CHILDREN head back to school after the summer holidays, many parents across Australia can breathe a sigh of relief. However it’s not always as simple as shuffling them out the front door and waving goodbye. Parents might feel like they are just recovering from the cost of Christmas, so the expenses involved with the return to school can seem overwhelming. However, some simple planning can help to reduce the cost pressures of sending the kids back to school.

School fees AFTER a mortgage, education costs can be one of the family’s biggest expenses, so it pays to plan carefully. Some families choose to use a dedicated education savings plan, managed fund or a high-interest savings account to prepare for the costs of school and/or tertiary education. By making regular deposits into the savings tool of your choice, it can help spread the cost of education and also earn some interest.

When it comes to private education, there are often discounts for paying school fees in full rather than in instalments. If manageable, this could save parents a considerable amount. Alternatively, many schools have a direct debit system where fees are paid regularly and can easily be managed as part of the family budget. Take advantage of any family and childcare benefits available to you, such as the Education Tax Refund (www. educationtaxrefund.gov.au) if eligible. This benefit offers up to 50 per cent back on a range of children’s education expenses, now including uniforms.

Education expenses WHEN budgeting for education costs for the year, it can help to make a list of all the expected expenses. While fees, uniforms, shoes and stationery are the obvious ones, don’t forget school camps and excursions, music lessons, fees for sporting activities and different sport uniforms, internet access and computers. Keep a list of all major events and expenses during

the year so you can set aside money and won’t be hit with unexpected last-minute bills. The cost of text books and stationery can be reduced if you shop around. Many text books are available new or secondhand at reduced prices from online sellers. Some schools also have sales at the end of each year for students to buy and sell used books. Children can re-use any of last year’s items from the stationery list if they are still in good condition, such as scissors, pencil cases, flash drives and calculators. For items you need to buy, try discount stores. Most chain stores have school stationery sales in January where you can also pick up cheap school bags, lunch boxes and other necessities. Remember to name all the children’s items to reduce the risk of them being lost and having to be replaced.

Lunches THERE are many small daily cost reductions to consider that add up to significant savings over the year. An obvious money saver is sending a packed lunch to

school instead of giving the kids lunch money. While it can be easy for busy parents to give their children money for the canteen, setting aside a small amount of time to prepare a healthy and filling lunch will end up costing far less over the year.

factor pocket money in when managing your household budget, the financial lessons children can learn ensure it can be a valuable exercise for everyone involved. By following these tips you can ensure you don’t break the bank when the kids go back to school. You could even go to the head of the class in

Pocket money THE start of a new school year is often the time when families review pocket money. How much a parent gives can depend on the age of the child, what they are expected to do to earn it, and how much disposable income you want them to have access to. Many teenagers are “paid” for doing household chores such as mowing lawns or washing the car. This money can be paid directly into a low-fee savings account so the children are encouraged to save. Where did you meet: We first met at my (Jasmine) second birthday but we then became close friends in year 10 at high school. We started dating when we were 16-years-old. Where and how did you get engaged: It was Valentine’s Day 2011 at home that we finally became engaged. Ant buys me a rose every Valentine’s Day but that year he bought these little red love heart chocolates as well with a super big card. I wasn’t eating chocolate because of a tooth ache but he kept 7021 hinting to me to eat them but I couldn’t so I became annoyed and said I was going to bed. He handed me the chocolates but I didn’t notice the

engagement ring in there, I still didn’t get the hint and stood up to go to bed. Then Ant started to eat the hearts just so I could see the ring sitting there, I can’t actually remember if he said “will you marry me? I was too excited! Challenges: Jasmine - The most challenging part of our wedding for me was trying to get the whole wedding party together as I had three bridesmaids from Adelaide. I think the wedding day was the only time everyone was at the same place. Anthony - My challenge was to stop Bridezilla from appearing! Favourite moments: Jazz - My Favourite moment from the whole day would probably be seeing Ant all suited up waiting for me. Eight acres of paradise! T

HIS picturesque masterpiece is an impressive home in every way, set on approximately eight acres with natural scrub surrounds and easy to maintain landscaped gardens. Inside the home you’ll ďŹ nd ďŹ ve bedrooms plus an ofďŹ ce, allowing extra space for the family or guests when they come to stay. All bedrooms have built-in robes, the master bedroom has a massive walk-in robe and an ensuite ďŹ t for a queen with a corner spa bath and extra-large shower alcove. The kitchen boasts ample bench space for the fussiest of chefs with oor and overhead Tasmanian timber cabinetry, stainless steel cooking appliances and a dishwasher. The sunken lounge will make the ultimate space for the family to get together and watch movies with the ďŹ re crackling in the background. Ducted cooling system throughout the home and a reverse cycle split system will make sure the temperature is perfect all year-round. The six bay shed will be the home to cars, a caravan, a boat and corner workshop if it is needed with three automatic roller doors and three sliding doors, making it simple for everyday use.

â– WARM conditions last week ensured excellent conditions for two swimming carnivals held in the Riverland on Friday night. Renmark travelled to Berri and Loxton travelled to Waikerie to contest the second pennant carnivals. The pennant carnivals consist of 96 events, with swimmers entered in events depending on their grade (speed) rather than age group. Each stroke is contested over both 50m and 100m distances, with the program commencing with 200m individual medley events. The highlight of the pennant carnivals is always the relay events at the end of the evening. The relay events attract double points and the way a team performs in the relay events can determine the outcome of the carnival, which occurred on Friday night.

â– FAST: Bree Lambert competes in the 50 metre freestyle event on the weekend.

The carnival between Renmark and Berri was a very competitive and closely contested event, with both teams tied on equal points after event 20. Renmark then gained the upper hand and by the start of the relay events had a 15 point lead over Berri. A strong performance by Berri, winning all of the relay events, enabled it to turn a 15 point deficit into a 12 point advantage and win the carnival, 295 points to 283 points. Waikerie put forward a very strong team against Loxton – they had a team of 40 swimmers, which would

be the largest team they have taken to a carnival in many years. Although Loxton had a smaller team (26 swimmers) they were able to win the event, but only by a margin of 30 points. The final scores were Loxton 248 points defeating Waikerie 218 points. Riverland swimming takes a break this coming week because the South Australian Age Championships will be held in Adelaide. The next Riverland carnival is the Loxton Open Carnival on Saturday, February 2 at the Loxton Swimming Pool.

Close finish at swimming carnival

â– IT has been a busy week at the Barmera Golf Club with several rounds of matches producing some impressive results. On Wednesday Kevin Magain edged out Sacha Pietrolaj, both on 38 points, in a stableford with birdies

to Ashley Kassulke (ninth hole), Pietrolaj (11th), Neville McPherson (11th), Glen Millard (11th) and Mark Evans (17th). Jim McKendrick won a nine hole twilight stableford on Friday, finishing ahead of Jordan Wright

on 19 points. In Saturday’s par competition, Steve Brown finished four over to win, while Mark Evans scored birdies on three holes to win Sunday’s stableford with 40 points, ahead of Carole McKendrick on 38.

CHARLIE’S SPORTS GOSS WITH GRAHAM CHARLTON

Winds produce good sailing ■ GOOD winds enabled the Lake Bonney Yacht Club to set a longer course with plenty of challenges in both divisions when the fourth heat of the A Handicap Series was sailed on Saturday. A good day’s sailing was enjoyed by all despite a few minor breakages causing major changes in the yachts’ positions at times. In division one, Miscellaneous Cats, Peter Dunk and Kirsten Thomas sailing ‘Splashes of Brilliance’ finished first ahead of Steve Thomas with ‘Just Do It’ and Robin Bawden with ‘Merlin’. In division two, Miscellaneous Monohulls, Tim and Josh Ridley took the win in ‘Sea Chook’ from Kim Tonkin and Linda Drewitt with ‘The Jam’ and Ellyn and Belinda Cale with Pager 3’. A Handicap B race is this Saturday’s event. Sailing training sessions resume on Saturday, February 9 at 10am.

Squash players wanted ■ ANYONE wanting to try squash are being offered the opportunity through Wednesday night training sessions. Held at the Loxton Squash Club from 6.30pm, these sessions are a perfect opportunity for anyone wanting to try the sport in a social and non competitive environment and also for prospective pennant competition players to meet other club members and to get a feel for the great atmosphere for which the club is renowned. The Loxton Squash Club caters for all standards from the beginner to the experienced and its membership boasts the number three ranked female in the state. Played indoors, the sport is great for fitness for all ages. Also being held on Wednesday afternoons are junior coaching clinics and by arrangement, individual sessions with club coach Tanya Marlor. Enquiries to club president Steve Emery can be made on 0417 859 232 or to Tanya Marlor on 0422 933 550.

Australian selection ■ IMPRESSIVE performances for the state under 14 boys team in last week’s annual junior Country Cup competition in Albury-Wodonga resulted in Barmera’s Mitch Wellington and Loxton’s Zane Lueth being selected for the Australian Country team for their age group to play in a tournament in New Zealand at Easter. All age divisions at the Country Cup were made up of 12 teams and amongst one of South Australia’s best overall efforts for some time, the under 14 boys finished fourth. In the under 14 girls division coached by Barmera’s Lisa Millard and involving Ella Schultz (Loxton), the team ended up in third position. Looking at the under 18 age

group, an injury hit boys side that included Charlie Rogers (Loxton) ended up 11th, while Che Lange and Angus Size (Loxton) and Kaiden Coats (Barmera) were members of a team that finished eighth. All of the players involved now have the opportunity to nominate to tryout for the national championship teams. Meanwhile, this weekend local teams will compete in major events with 12 junior teams participating at the Starplex Carnival at Gawler and the A grade men and women’s teams at the state country championships at Wayville in Adelaide. The men’s team to be coached by Glen Millard is Kenny Wright, Dillon Millard, Danny Millard (Barmera), Tyson Hoffmann,

Andrew Tullett (Loxton), Darren Marner, Scott Stanton, Mark Howie (Berri) and Josh Warnock (Renmark). Sonja Modlinski will coach the women’s team that includes Reeni Leuders, Kelly Nelson, Anita Modlinski (Renmark), Ellee Eleftheriadis, Michelle Wenman (Berri), Mackella Armfield, Jules Morgan and Kirsty Birt (Barmera).

Gold continues winning ways ■ IN Mid Murray cricket last Saturday, Waikerie Gold continued on its winning way comfortably scoring 7 for 162 chasing Perponda’s 128. Josh Rudiger with 55 top scored for Perponda, while for Gold Jonno Walding captured 5 for 30, Luke Exton 2 for 31 and Daryl Hilton snared 2 for 4. In reply, Waikerie Gold’s scoring was led by Walding who completed a good double with 40 retired, Ricky Carter hit 32 and Andrew Bevan finished with 25. For Perponda Chris Rudiger, Zac Schubert and Andrew Dolphin all captured two wickets.

Renmark North Blue’s T20 win ■ RENMARK North Blue became the Renmark District competition’s Twenty20 premiers after a convincing win over Kings XI Punjab on Friday night. Batting first, Renmark North Blue amounted 8/146 and the Kings XI managed just 9/94 in reply. In the Riverland Turf Cricket Association A grade, Loxton convincingly beat Berri in the last one day match before the final. Todd van Dyk and George Halls top scored with 18 in a total of 99 with Jake Albrecht ripping through the middle order to take 5/14. In reply, Loxton passed the total two wickets down with Josh Deren making 37. Waikerie-Ramco’s score of 3/218 (Phil Valentine 87, Kym Taylor 68*) was too much for Renmark (144), who were destroyed by the bowling of Tyson Sutton with 6/17 from 4.4 overs.

Locals on their bikes for challenge Loxton bounces back ■ RIVERLAND riders will take part in the Bupa Challenge held as part of the Tour Down Under cycling event in Adelaide this weekend. In 2012 the Challenge involved over 7000 cyclists, including 2,200 enthusiasts from interstate and from overseas countries like Great Britain and the United States of America. In its 10th year, Tour race director Mike Turtur said “the Bupa Challenge is a great chance to test yourself, have a fun day with friends and then

take the opportunity to see professionals tackle the same route just hours later”. The 2013 Bupa Challenge will be held tomorrow over a 127 kilometres course starting at Modbury, moving into the Adelaide Hills and onto the Barossa Valley for a finish at Tanunda. Amongst the riders taking part will be a group associated with the Riverland Cycling Club, including current club champion Steve Jaensch. “We have 41 riders including 10 kids,” he said.

“All riders will participate in the four different options being offered. “The Modbury to Tanunda ride is stage four.” Other options of starting points are at Kersbrook, Mount Pleasant and Nuriootpa in a ride that is ideal for social, corporate or sporting teams looking for a ride with a difference. It is not a race but a challenge, some of it formidable like trying to conquer the King Of The Mountain Climb at Humbug scrub.

Greenfields dominate golf ■ AT THE Waikerie Golf Club last week, leading scores in a Wednesday stableford came from Derek Greenfield, 41, and Hans Vandermeyden, 40. Then last Saturday Anne Greenfield, 82/65, won the division one stroke event while division two went to Trevor Kranz with 94/71. Amongst other leading scores were Phil Isaacson, 78/67, vandermeyden, 83/71, and James Thomas, 79/72. Wes Bald produced an eagle at the fourth hole.

■ STARS: Renmark’s Josh Warnock and Berri’s Darren Marner (left) will play in the A grade men’s state country championships in Adelaide this weekend.

Thrilling state singles bowls final ■ BERRI’S Andrew Hill defeated Renmark’s Eddie Schulz 25-19 in the Region Four State Men’s Bowls Singles final at Barmera on Sunday in a contest described by event coordinator Ian Kubank as “probably the best final played for many years”. The game was touch and go at 17 shots each at the 21st end. “Andrew then got away to lead 24-19 at the 26th but on the very next end, Eddie was holding three shots all within a foot of the jack,” Kubank said. “Andrew, with his last bowl, drove the jack into the ditch to win the game. “The bowl did not disturb any of Eddie’s bowls. “A truly amazing shot. “In fact the whole day produced superb bowling with both Hill and Schulz, in particular, outstanding as they were amongst those who played

four games.” Looking through the results, Hill started the day by defeating Phil Ashton (Barmera), 25-8, and then followed up by beating club mate Dennis Treloar 25-14.

Treloar won 25-20 from Lyndoch’s Chris Rule. Hill, who remains a member of the men’s state squad, will now be at the Payneham club this weekend contesting the SA finals of the championship which in-

The whole day producd superb bowling with both Hill and Schulz outstanding. He then entered the epic final by eliminating John van der Wyst (Renmark RSL), 25-14. Schulz’s passage involved winning 25-18 against his fellow Renmark club member John Thompson 25-18, beating Graeme King (Berri) 25-14 and knocking over Dave Mills (Barmera) 25-10. In other knock out clashes, Mills had defeated Gary Pursche (Waikerie) 25-9, van der Wyst accounted for Sean Leesue (Renmark) 25-20 and

volves representatives of 16 zones, eight country and eight city. His form in major state events and South Australian teams in the past 12 months has kept him up amongst the leading bowlers in SA. In March 2012, Hill reached the semi-finals of the men’s triples championship with his Berri club mates Graeme King and Andy Gapco and in December he made the same stage in the pairs partnered by Barossa’s Chris Kearns.

■ READY TO HIT: Loxton’s Mikayla Hammerstein in bat against Cobdogla in A grade softball. ■ LOXTON reacted strongly to the thumping it received from Berri in the previous game when it comfortably defeated Cobdogla 13-5 in Saturday’s A grade softball. High amongst Loxton’s best performers were Haylee Symens, Kelly Westley and Cara Venning, while Tracy Liddell, Bronwyn Smith and Bec Thomas stood out for Cobdogla. Earlier in a Wednesday night fixture, Berri had continued its impressive run of form to account for Cobdogla 14-9 with Chris Eleftheriadis, Kris Taylor and Kenny Karpany again the driving forces. Eleftheriadis and Karpany both produced home runs. Jodie Sullivan, Jo Gregory and Bronwyn Smith were best for Cobdogla. Meanwhile, in last Friday night’s round of baseball, the Lyrup Oval hosted its first matches for the season with the Renmark oval unavailable as preparations take place for this year’s AFL match. Playing at home must have inspired the Lyrup team as it really applied pressure to the top side, Berri Red. Lyrup took it right up to the reigning champion until Berri’s Nick Kuhn broke the game open with three safe hits on end to lead his side to a hard fought victory, 8-4. In the other games, Loxton again impressed as a finals threat with a 16-0 win over Renmark White and Renmark Blue also had a hollow 16-3 victory over Berri Blue after it had trailed early in the contest.

Changes made in country squad ■ THE chairman of the Region Four men’s bowls selection panel Mark Kubank has confirmed that for this year’s team to play in the Country Round Robin competition in Adelaide from February 12 to 15, nine changes have been necessary from the team that won the event in 2012. Players unavailable for the defence of the title are Waikerie pair Roger Davies and Barry Harden, Renmark’s Sean Leesue, Broken Hill’s Peter Gageler and from the Barossa, Robert Grope, Paul

Uranjek, Brian Bowden, George Fergusson and Geoff Langley. Amongst the replacements are five that have played in the team previously in Robert Thompson, Brian Burnett (Waikerie), Trevor Schulz (Loxton), Ron Turnbull (Nuriootpa) and John Standish (Angaston). Making their debut for the zone will be former SA men’s singles champion Craig Treloar and Graham Butt (Berri), Justin Morris and Anthony O’Brien (Freeling). Morris, who will skip-

per a rink, was due to take part in 2012 but was a last minute withdrawal, while O’Brien has previously represented Lower North at the tournament.

SPORT

Young rower claims gold medal as Riverland’s brightest hockey player...

Forced to watch from the sidelines ■ “WE didn’t really expect it, especially with Great Britain having claimed gold and silver medals in the single sculls”. “It definitely went better than the few attempts it took to light the cauldron so that was sweet.” Those were the words of Loxton rower Alexander Hill after he had firstly been chosen to light the cauldron at the opening of last week’s Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney and had then been a member of the South Australian crew that won gold medals in the Men’s Quadruple Scull event. For the rowing competitions at the festival, Australia was broken up into states and took on Great Britain, New Zealand and Vanuatu. In the final medal count, South Australia competed well ending with New South Wales on six medals behind Great Britain (GBR) on 10 and New Zealand (NZ) with nine. The Quadruple Scull final saw only a half a boat length separate

first and third place with Australia finishing ahead of GBR and NZ.

Talented hockey player sidelined ALSO in Sydney for the event which involved 1700 competitors from 30 countries and ran into disruptive record temperatures was new Hockeyroo Karri McMahon. But the heat was not the former Berri junior’s main concern as she ended the festival in a moon boot after suffering stress fractures to a foot. Representing the Australian under 20 Jillaroos, Karri said “I managed three matches in a Test series against Great Britain before the Youth Olympics started and we won all of them but then I only played the opening match of the festival against GBR before discovering I had injured my foot”. “I had been really happy with my form up until then and I did get a gold medal because I

■ WINNER: Berri hockey star Karri McMahon (second from left) still claimed a gold medal at the Youth Olympics in Sydney but was only able to play one match after seriously injurying her foot. participated,” she said. Karri is now back home in Berri for a fortnight or so with her moon boot, which she will wear for three weeks of a seven week recovery time. “I will now miss the Junior World Cup qualifiers on the Gold Coast but I hope to be okay for the under 21 nationals in Darwin in March and possibly a Hockeyroos home series and a Jillaroos tour after that,” she said.

Australia won double gold in heart stopping finals in both the women’s and men’s competitions. The Jillaroos met China in the final after the two teams drew 1-1 in an earlier clash and after China took an early 1-0 lead, Australia equalised 13 minutes into the second half. In a thrilling contest, Kathryn Slattery scored the winning goal with only three minutes remaining.

The Burras, the men’s team, played Great Britain for the title and it went to a golden goal. Australia led easily early on 3-0 but let the opponent in for 3-3 at the 57 minute mark and then gave away a one goal lead. However budding star Jack Elliot sent the match to a golden goal and then Will Gilmour beat several defenders in a brilliant individual effort to win the game for the Burras.

Teams fight for finals positions in remaining rounds ■ PRIOR to this season, and since 1986, I had been a lodgement point for the results for men’s Saturday pennant bowls and in that time I do not believe that since finals were introduced there has been many years where right down through the divisions there has been so much competition for a place in the top four and also for the double chance. Oddly, after last Saturday’s results, it is only first division where the teams to contest the finals do look decided and the main interest surrounds the fight between Renmark and Loxton for second position. Barmera, losing to bottom side Renmark RSL, appears to have cost the lakeside club any chance of a rare opportunity to participate in the major round and those to chase the 2012-13 premiership will most likely be at Berri, Renmark, Loxton and this season’s new team

Loxton RSL. Berri defeating Renmark 8070 in Saturday’s top of the table clash opened the door for Loxton to quickly regain second position but Waikerie slammed it shut again with a last end upset victory over Loxton 68-66. The win by Waikerie emphasises a frustrating season for the 201112 grand finalist with its sixth place ranking at this stage perhaps not as bad as it would appear. Up to seven of its matches have been lost by less than 10 shots and if the club’s players have not had their nerves tested before now they were certainly under the pump last weekend. Apart from its two shot win in the top grade, Waikerie drew with both Lyrup in second division and with Loxton Yellow in division three and won 57-56 in fourth division. Returning to first division,

Loxton RSL sits seven points ahead of Barmera with only three Saturdays remaining in the minor round. Often criticised, these end of season matches, after an even number of complete rounds are finished, see Barmera having a bye, both teams meeting heavy weight opponents Berri and Loxton and Loxton RSL playing Renmark RSL. Second division is a superb competition. After 15 rounds, Berri Red has 125 points, Renmark Gold 122, Moorook 111, Monash 110, Loxton Black 110 and Loxton Green 100 with others close behind. Looking at the remaining matches, Moorook is far from safe but may take some shifting as it plays Renmark RSL, 10th, Loxton RSL, eighth and Waikerie, seventh. Monash faces top side Berri Red, Barmera (14th) and Renmark

Green (13th) and Loxton Black is up against Waikerie, while Berri Blue (ninth) and Loxton RSL both perhaps face more anxious moments. In third division, positions one to three are occupied firmly by Waikerie, Barmera and Berri but fourth spot has candidates lining up. Loxton Yellow has 79 points, Loxton RSL, 76 and Monash, 75. As it turns out in the three outings remaining all of those teams meet each other so their destiny perhaps rests in their own hands. Fourth division also has ‘finals fever’ arriving early but with Barmera, in fifth spot behind Waikerie, Berri, Loxton White and Monash still to face both Waikerie and Berri it is doubtful whether its late surge towards the top four can continue.

Australia Day blockbuster for one day final

Karri’s injury blow

WHILE Loxton will go into Saturday’s Riverland Turf Cricket Association A grade one day final as favourite, Waikerie-Ramco has hit peak form at the right time. The Australia Day showdown will be played at Loxton Oval at the earlier time of 10am. In what is expected to be a highly entertaining affair, Waikerie-Ramco will be hungry for some one day silverware given that Loxton won the competition in 2011. Loxton captain and wicket keeper Rhett Colls said the team will go into the match “quietly confident but aware of WaikerieRamco’s form. “We actually reckon Waikerie’s in better form than us, he said. “We are quietly confident but we know we are in for a good game. For Loxton, opening batsman Brad Walter will be an important player, whilee Josh een Deren and Michael Gutsche have been in good touch. avWith the ball, Jake Albrecht is having a superb season and Ben Walter‘ss spinners could prove pivotal. For Waikerie-Ramco, Kym Tay-m lor has been consistent, while Tim n Bevan is a dangerous player when on song. ■Continued Page 21
