Quarantine measures to increase Tourists could be hooked on catfish THE State Government plans to increase the number of random fruit fly quarantine roadblocks across the Riverland in the summer season despite believing the message is getting across to travellers. At Blanchetown’s

random roadblock over the long weekend, almost 50 per cent of vehicles detected carrying fruit had receipts as proof of purchase. Biosecurity SA manager of compliance Mark Langman said visitors having a receipt for fruit continues to increase. “The message for us is

we are very heartened with the numbers of people who bring fruit in with a receipt, that’s increased dramatically over the past couple of years,” he said. “There is always room for improvement but I do think that the message is getting through.” ■ Continued Page 2

THE Murray Mallee Local Government Association is continuing to put pressure on the State Government to provide funding for a catfish season, which, if successful, would provide a boost for local tourism and recreatoinal fishing. Murray Mallee Local Government Association president Dave Burgess said currently there is a ban on

fishing for catfish but reports from anglers suggest there is a large number in the River Murray. “Up the top end of the river the catfish are out and about and active and far beyond what they used to be,” he said. “If the numbers are there it would really be good for tourism if they (fishermen) were able to come up and

O’Brien, Arnold receive prestigious Australia Day awards HEAVY involvement in the Berri community over the past four decades has played a pivotal role in Tim O’Brien receiving a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) honour. Mr O’Brien was named on the Australia Day 2013 Honours List which was announced on Saturday by Governor General Quentin Bryce. While Mr O’Brien felt privileged to be nominated for the award, he said there is “always a surprise element about it”. “Once that’s sunk in you reflect on it a bit more,” he said. “I think there is benefit in the whole awards process in that it seems people can see the other people that have done very good work in the community and hopefully it might inspire the broader community to be involved in it.” An involvement with the Berri Hotel Group for the past 40 years has been very rewarding, according to Mr O’Brien. “That has been more than a chairman’s role, it has been an executive chairman role for probably half that time,” he said. “The good thing about the hotel involvement is we have been able to get on and do things where you can actually see results.” Kapunda born, Mr O’Brien moved to the Riverland in 1969 to com-

mence work in his own legal practice and has now been here for 44 years and in the same practice for 40 years. In that time he has been involved with many sporting and community organisations including the Berri Football Club, local tennis and cricket clubs, Our Lady of the River School, local tourism bodies and the Berri National Trust to name a few. In fact, Mr O’Brien was involved in building the Berri football clubrooms, was captain and president of the Berri Cricket Club, was on the sub committee that helped construct the Berri tennis courts and set up the Riverland Veteran Tennis Tournament. “That is one of the things that gives me a great deal of pleasure,” he said. “The very first one we had 10 teams, we now have basically 100 teams and we use every venue in the Riverland, each town benefits because of that.” Meanwhile, Waikerie’s Meredith Arnold was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) over the Australia Day weekend. The community minded volunteer has served on the Waikerie and District Historical Society for more than 30 years, been a recipient of the local citizen of the year awards and volunteered at the local hospital and school amongst many other things.

The random roadblock was open for 14 hours on Friday and almost six hours on Saturday, inspecting 1384 vehicles with 448 registering fruit on board. Of the 448 carrying fruit, 217 had a receipt, while 231 brought fruit into the region illegally and as a result, an estimated 370 kilograms was seized. “The 231 that brought fruit into the Riverland without a receipt have been reported and there is a number of them where it is going to be looked over a bit more closely in relation to issuing a $375 fine,” Mr Langman said. The State Government is pleased to see more people are heeding warnings about fruit fly and carrying fruit and vegetables into the region. “The total non-compliance rate was 16.7 per cent

■ From Page 1 A survey costing about $25,000 would be required to have solid evidence about the numbers of catfish in the Riverland. “PIRSA said we’ve got to put in a lot of money to do the next stage of the survey and it’s just not a feasible exercise to do that,” Mr Burgess said. “It’s really their responsibility, they are the fish managers. “We’d like to see a 12 month trial period where they let people catch the fish, keep two fish of a certain size and certain weight and record the information. “I think it’s time to get away from the ‘it’s all too hard, don’t want to know about it’”. Mr Burgess is now calling on the public for support to help lobby the State Government to implement the survey. “They could write to their local council, they could write to the Murray Mallee LGA or write to the minister and say we would like a bit more action taken on the project,” Mr Burgess said.

and that figure is much better than the figure we got for our first roadblock last year,” Mr Langman said. “Our first roadblock last year was around 28 per cent of people had brought in fruit illegally, so getting it down to 16.7 is good. “Speaking to a lot of the people who had the receipt, they are saying ‘we heard the

message on the radio’ and what was really good was so many people saying ‘we understand the reason why and how important it is to keep fruit fly out of the Riverland’. “We are planning on doing more roadblocks for this summer season and they won’t necessarily be at Blanchetown either, we are pretty keen to move it about.”

Bringing our young workers home next generation of experienced workers in the region. Over my years at the Riverland Weekly, I have seen many goal driven and smart students move to Adelaide and leave their families behind. You cannot blame them as they seek a career path and options that we unfortunately do not provide in the Riverland. However, it is very concerning that most of the stu-

dents who go away to study never return. There is no doubt that some do and are lured back by the lifestyle on the river and the benefits of country living. But overall there are not enough jobs in the Riverland for our young workers to return from metropolitan centres. What are we doing to create new jobs in the region?

You have to acknowledge the job searching agencies for giving it their all to find work for the unemployed. Yet, as businesses shut their doors, so do job opportunities. I would love to see some more funding injected into the region to create much needed jobs and entice our talented young workers back to where they belong to help the region prosper into the future.

mentor in the University of Adelaide Indigenous head-start program for rural students; youth ambassador for the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence and attended the United National Forum on Indigenous Issues and was named Young Australian of the Year for South Australia in 2012. After completing her Masters in Material Anthropology and

Museum Ethnography at Oxford, Ms Richards hopes to help Aboriginal communities link up with and access objects from the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, the Australian Times reported. Riverland hospitals left off tour itinerary

DESPITE a written invitation to new South Australian Health Minister Jack Snelling, the Riverland Regional Hospital has been left off his inaugural tour itinerary of the state’s medical facilities. While it is understood Mr Snelling plans to visit the Riverland in future months, the majority of the 10 hospitals he visited this week are based in the South East and in Adelaide. During his tour,

Mr Snelling said he is hoping to gain a better understanding of the challenges facing the state’s health system. “South Australia has the best health system in the country and I plan to keep it that way,” he said. “I know in my time as Treasurer the budget challenges faced by the Health Department but to face these challenges we need to consult widely with the people it impacts

the most. “I plan to visit both metropolitan and regional hospitals this week to start this process and expect to visit many other hospitals in the weeks and months ahead.” The Berri Barmera Health Advisory Council had previously written to the new health minister inviting him to tour the region’s largest hospital in Berri and see the $41 million upgrades currently taking place.

Public meeting to be held over on-street parking in Berri and Barmera THE BERRI Barmera Council will call a public meeting, at a date yet to be determined, to discuss the ongoing issue of on-street parking in all narrow streets within the Berri and Barmera townships. At council’s November meeting it requested that a report be prepared on the impact of allowing vehicles to park with two wheels on the footpath. This was due to expiations issued to people after having parked on the footpath and their concerns with the road widths and the safety of parking their vehicles along both sides of the streets, in particular, Derrick Street in Berri. At council’s December meeting, a motion was passed not consenting to the parking of

two wheels on the footpath area and investigating further parking opportunities on the approximate 45 kilometres of roads in the district described as narrow in width.

safety prior”. “Council may consider an alternative for marking yellow line ‘No Parking Areas’ where the residents provide support for such a proposal.”

A year or so ago, we told people they weren’t allowed to do it and we started policing it. It was recommended that council does not undertake any measures to address car parking on narrow streets, although the concerns of residents have been noted. Council’s January agenda reads “the area of particular concern, Derrick Street, has been in place for over 20 years and no issues have been raised over

“This may be through Council receiving correspondence from a number of residents and then undertaking consultation with all local residents affected by the proposal to gauge if there is support. “If there was unanimous support then this could be implemented.” Berri Barmera Council chief

executive officer David Beaton told the Riverland Weekly council “can’t afford to change all of the streets to try and make them wider”. “They are acceptable to the Australian standard,” he said. “What council is going to do is is have a public meeting. “We will invite the people, especially from Derrick Street, to come along if they’ve got some issues or anybody that is concerned about parking on narrow streets. “A year or so ago, we told people what they weren’t allowed to do and we started policing it. “It’s about education and understanding the issues the people have as well and the issues the council inspectors have in trying to implement the rules and regulations that exist.”

SOLAR NEWS Cut Price Solar Comes up Short. Consumer Watchdog organisations are reporting a large increase in calls from disgruntled homeowners who are reporting problems with Inverters, Installation and other components of their Solar Power Systems. They are reportedly citing poor quality equipment that was commonly sold as part of bottom end of the market systems represented the majority of the calls. The old adage, you get what you pay for, is still alive and well today. People need to be very careful when making an investment in solar. Not only could they compromise the performance of their system but poor quality product installed incorrectly can be a real safety concern also. People can get confused by the amount of options and the large variance in price from company to company. In the end some people just throw their hands in the air and buy the cheapest system and just cross their fingers. Don’t fall into this trap. Seek out reputable companies in the industry and be well informed on all fronts. Some companies are also promoting outrageous feed-in tariff rates that they will give to the customer. Consumers should be aware that the current government-funded feed in tariff is a fraction of what some solar companies are promising in marketing material. Always read the fine print. You will often find that these offers involve moving power companies and locking into contracts as well as paying a higher price for the system itself. Householders need to remember that someone is paying for that higher feed in tariff and more than likely it ends up being the unsuspecting consumer. If the deal looks too good to be true it often is.

Mid Murray Council demands a stop to bin abuse

Plans to prevent illegal rubbish dumping THE Mid Murray Council is calling on those involved in illegally dumping rubbish in Blanchetown and surrounding areas to stop the “abuse” as it plans to combat the problem. Council recently surveyed all shack areas that have a bin bank service to gain views on whether there was a preference for the introduction of an individual bin collection service or whether to retain the existing bin bank services. The local council said some of the bin bank areas have had volumes of rubbish dumped there, particularly during school holidays. Chief Executive Officer Russell Peate said “it is a significant cost and occupational health and safety issue for our staff almost every day to collect and remove rubbish dumped around some of the bin banks,” he said. “We also have no control over what is dumped at these bin banks.” Whilst Mr Peate said council recognises the benefit of bin bank services, the abuse of these bin banks by others cannot continue. “We cannot let this abuse continue,” he said.

Interstate rains unlikely to have impact on South Australian River Murray flows

No impact from floodwater A LOCAL water expert is predicting that River Murray flows into the Riverland will not rise significantly due to flooding in Queensland and parts of New South Wales as first thought. Flow On Business principal Tony Sharley said the torrential rainfall is not likely to impact flows into the state. “At this stage I think that will generate some flow in those northern tributaries,” he said. “I don’t think it’s going to be significant enough to make a difference 2000 kilometres downstream in the Murray. “With the Darling River now be-

IT was a night in 1998 that Berri’s Danny John will never forget but he was almost forced to. After being out with friends, Danny was coming back from Yamba in the passenger seat of a car. With alcohol involved and Danny already intoxicated in the passenger seat, the vehicle left the road and flipped six times. During the accident Danny believes he threw himself over a girl to save her life but much of the detail remains hazy to this day. As a result of the accident, Danny actually died before being brought back to life by doctors and his horrific injuries resulted in permanent disabilities. “Basically my injuries were similar to me having

a stroke on the right hand side,” he said. “The left hand side of my brain was damaged.” During the accident it was discovered that Danny has a rare problem with his trachea impacting one in 10 million Australians and as a result he died “momentarily”. “I really shouldn’t be here,” he said. While the accident was horrific, the extensive recovery changed Danny’s outlook on life forever. “They said I’d never walk again,” he said. “I am a very stubborn person and when they tell me I can’t do something, I’ll prove them wrong.” The 37-year-old will never fully recover from the accident but life has taken a positive step following the

opportunity to work with people with a disability in the Riverland. Currently Danny is in his second year of a traineeship in disability services with the Riverland Respite and Recreation Service and has been nominated as a finalist for next Friday’s Riverland and Mallee Vocational Awards. “Until something like this (the accident) happened to me, I didn’t really appreciate the effort towards clients,” he said. “I realised I can give so much back and I’m a lot better off than some people that are less fortunate. “The term rewarding is probably overused but it really is rewarding. “It doesn’t seem like you give much but you get a lot back.”

FEATURE ARTICLE

Life in Glossop...England The Riverland Weekly and Glossop Advertiser, in England, are participating in a unique story exchange to provide insight into a town with the same name on the other side of the world. Here is an opportunity to read about some of the town’s characters and history as the English readers find out about ours. BY KATE WEIR NESTLED in the hills in North West England just 25 kilometres from Manchester sits Glossop, Derbyshire; gateway to the Peak District national park. With steep narrow streets lined with stone-built terraced homes and a bustling high street packed with independent shops, Glossop really looks and feels like a traditional English town. Glossop’s history significantly pre-dates the Domesday book of 1086 but it was in the last 200 years with the dawn of the industrial revolution that Glossop really grew. By the mid 1800s more than a third of the town’s workforce was employed in the cotton industry and huge chimneys dominated the skyline. Following the decline in Britain’s cotton industry over the last century, many of Glossop’s 32,000 residents now commute to Manchester or other nearby towns each day to work in offices, while most of the mills have either been demolished or turned into apartments, businesses

or shops. But there’s a lot more to Glossop than just its history. These days the town and villages which make up Glossopdale are popular TV and film locations. Hadfield was transformed into Royston Vasey for cult BBC comedy The League of Gentleman, while location agents continue to be attracted to the area for its dramatic hills and old-fashioned streets. And there are plenty of famous faces who call Glossop home.

Acclaimed fashion designer Vivienne Westwood grew-up in Tintwistle and double Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel is from Hadfield. The late billionaire pornography baron Paul Raymond - who’ll be portrayed by comedian Steve Coogan in a film called The Look of Love due out in 2013, spent his childhood in the town. Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bez, the one-time crazy dancer and maraca player with Man-

chester band The Happy Mondays, both lived locally at one point. People continue to move to the town for many reasons including its close proximity to both Manchester and the beautiful Peak District national park. It has two state (public) high schools and more than a dozen primary schools, though the nearest hospital and major leisure facilities, like a cinema, are in Ashton-underLyne, 15km away. The town centre is also popular for its independent shops, pubs, restaurants and live music venues. The strong sense of community is reflected in the dozens of thriving voluntary groups and sports clubs for soccer, rugby, cricket, sailing, swimming, and cycling to name just a few. And traditions remain important too, including the annual Peak District practice of well dressing. Each spring or summer several wells and springs around Glossop, as well as across the county, are decorated with intricate petal designs as a way to give thanks for the purity of the water. Perhaps the biggest down side to the Glossop area is congestion.

Glossop home to master apprentice By KATE WEIR GLOSSOP rose to fame this year as the home of reality TV star Adam Corbally. Adam, 33, appeared in the eighth series of the British version of the The Apprentice shown on BBC One. Adam is Glossop born and bred and after leaving school at 16 with few qualifications, he went into business aged just 19 with a greengrocer’s stall on the town’s market. Before appearing on the show, dad of two Adam had grown his business into a successful retail and wholesale fruit and veg outfit and had also taken the chance to develop a property portfolio of eight houses which he leases out.

■ STAR: Reality TV star Adam Corbally at his fruit and veg stall at the Glossop market. Photo: MEN MEDIA Adam, a former student at Glossopdale Community College, made it through to the final five of the BBC show, which in the UK stars Amstrad computer tycoon Lord Alan Sugar, who himself started out selling beetroot from a market stall as a boy. By making it through

the final five Adam beat competition from others with high-flying city careers, university degrees and jobs with national and international firms. Adam became a favourite to win with his laidback, down to earth and confident manner, impressive selling skills and ac-

cidental catchphrases like ‘start the car!’ and ‘tastes like Christmas’. Since being fired in the penultimate episode, Adam has returned home to Glossop to run his businesses and even helped to decorate the town centre with trees and lights in the run-up to Christmas something he’s been helping with for more than a decade. He’s also signed up to run the London Marathon in aid of charity in April 2013. From his fame on the TV, he’s branched out into motivational speaking, become the face of a national markets campaign, been nominated for a reality TV award and is currently exploring a number of business ventures across the UK and beyond.

With no motorway link between Manchester and Sheffield, tens of thousands of cars and lorries attempt to travel each day through or past Glossop on just a single lane in each direction. And the weather can be hard too. There are several reservoirs in the area, used to harness the high rainfall in both winter and summer, and these supply Manchester with drinking water. And at about 300m above sea level in parts, Glossop is prone to snow too. But Glossop remains a town packed with character - and characters - which help make it special. People from Manchester and some of its younger residents may see it as sleepy and sometimes strange but Glossop is a beautiful, interesting, and largely a safe place to live with plenty of character.

Local celebrity - The Sundance Kid IT may be a far cry from America’s Wild West but Glossop has its very own self-styled cowboy. The Sundance Kid, real name Geoffrey Burrows, is a well-known face around Glossop where his cries of ‘yeehaw’ echo around the streets. For decades Sundance, who’s become a local celebrity, has dressed in a cowboy hat and sometimes a Zorro-style eye mask. He wishes people well with shouts of ‘ride on cowboy’ or ‘ride on cowgirl’. Each Christmas, Sundance, 68, hands out homemade laminated calendars in memory of his dad, who he called Jesse James, to anyone who wants one, often ending up making hundreds to satisfy demand. So associated is Sundance with Christmas that he even launched a campaign, supported by hundreds of people on Facebook, to switch on

the town’s Christmas lights this year. He ultimately missed out on the honour to the mayor. Sundance has also starred in a film, made by local film maker George Wharmby while still a student, called Catching Sundance. It was shown at the prestigious Cambridge Film Festival and can be viewed on YouTube.

Stomp expected to grow THE Riverland RAR Stomp for Support has been hailed a major success after almost 100 people participated in the walk of up to 20.5 kilometres on Saturday. The event, in its inaugural year in the region, is expected to grow even bigger next year with over $21,500 raised to go to Legacy. “We are still receiving donations,” Organiser Ja-

son O’Malley said. “We never expected to raise that much. “When we first looked at doing it, we thought we might get 10 of us together to walk.” In the end people travelled from far and wide to join in with participants from Victoria, Adelaide, Mount Barker teaming up with locals to walk from

Berri to Loxton. Many walkers joined in at the 10 kilometre, five kilometre and one kilometre marks with World War II veteran and senior Loxton Mardi Gras ambassador Les Voigt also taking part in the final stretch. Despite some challenging areas, Mr O’Malley said the walk “wasn’t overly difficult”.

Following the ‘Stomp’, a barbecue was held in Loxton on the Australia Day Saturday. Mr O’Malley thanked everyone for their support in organising the event and said donating money to Legacy is an important cause. “I think groups like them need the money for support,” he said.

THEY were off and scuttling again on Sunday as the Blanchetown Australia Day yabby races pulled in another big crowd and raised another big sum of money for the local sporting bodies. Into its third year, the Blanchetown Crustacean Racing Club’s annual meeting continues to grow with more than $4000 raised for the Blanchetown Combined Sporting Bodies, up from $3500 last year. After six heats of racing and the running of the consolation finals, the mood was set for the 2013 Blanchetown Cup when local singing identity Leanne Schubert belted out a popular pre-race version of the national anthem. In the end it was the Paisley Syndicate’s Great Claw Hunter who scooted down the twometre track to take out the Cup and win $900 for its owners. In the consolations, Struth Ruth took out the $500 Moorundie Mug for the Jon and Ali Partnership, while Muck ‘n Fuddle clawed its way to victory in the $300 Paisley Plate for its River Palms owners. President of the BCRC Trevor Hailstone was rapt with the ever-increasing interest in the meeting which this year saw a separate “coliseum-style” track created next to the regular deck at the hotel. “I think we saw some of the best racing we’ve seen in the time this meeting has been run,” Trevor said. “The crowd around the edge of the deck looking down on the Coliseum of Crustaceans

was so big, we’re looking into having video cameras next year to beam the action on to a big screen on the deck so no one misses a minute of the action.” A fun, family day with a colouring-in competition for kids and the guess-the-weight of Clarry the Carp competition, sporting bodies vice president Peter Zadow echoed Trevor’s thoughts on the fundraising meeting. “This is by-far the largest money spinner for the Blanchetown Combined Sporting Bodies and it has also become an iconic event for the town,” he said. “To raise this sort of money for our town facilities, which help encourage kids to take up sport, is invaluable and a credit to everyone who turned up, many from Blanchetown and plenty from far and wide.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dumping of hard waste I HAVE the need to respond to the article (Public bins overflow in Blanchetown, January 24) quoting an anonymous shack owner about the overflowing rubbish bins at Blanchetown. I know that the rubbish trucks are seen here in Blanchetown three times a week, they also attend those bins twice. Maybe the one thing that the ‘shacky’ left out was that the weekenders have a tendency to throw all of their hard rubbish out there as well, such as televisions, chairs and even last week, a television cabinet was there with two bikes. Contractors which come into town have been known to fill all the bins with their waste from jobs rather that taking it with them. Maybe the simple answer to this

would be to open the refuse depot for longer on the designated days. There has been a push for a roadside collection for the shacks but if the shackies had to pay for this service would they? The residents already pay $40 a year incorporated in their rates to have theirs collected and I suspect it would be far greater than that for the shackies when considering the truck would have to drive around all the shack areas looking for possibly 18 bins during the quite season, and the rest of the year for extra bins here and there. Unfortunately at busy times of the year bins will and have always been choked up with rubbish but as far as I am concerned, the council does a far better job at getting rid of it quickly than it did twenty odd years ago. Gavin Abraham, Blanchetown.

Have your say about the issues that affect you.

Spare a thought NATURAL disasters are a tough time for Australians; many families have faced disadvantage as a result of damage to their properties, we have lost families and friends at the hands of Mother Nature and it can take years to recover from the dent that these experiences leave on both individuals and on the community. Earlier this year we have again witnessed or been part of terrible stories about bushfires ravaging Australia, leaving homes in ruins, removing physical traces of lifetimes of memories and leaving an emptiness in all of our hearts. These are times that test the spirit and strength of a nation. After witnessing our country facing the floods in Queensland in 2012 and then the bushfires recently, we have seen our nation pull together to make a difference and

help those that have been affected by these disasters. We have seen people in Australia putting the wellbeing of other Australians before their own, we have seen victims helping other victims, and we have seen people with very little giving to assist others who have lost loved ones and their homes. Our firefighters are working overtime, often without payment, putting their lives on the line to stop the blazes that are destroying communities across Australia. One of these courageous individuals has given his life to protect families from the devastation that these fires have caused. Our firefighters, particularly this individual, will forever be remembered by us as heroes. I would like to acknowledge the work of volunteers, without whom many of the crucial activities to assist with the fires would not have taken place.

A SPIRITED team effort from Loxton was the catalyst behind a seven wicket win over Waikerie-Ramco in the Riverland A grade one day final on Saturday. Batting first, WaikerieRamco got off to the worst possible start when Phil Valentine was caught by Brad Walter off the bowling of Craig Fisher without scoring. Consistent fast bowler Josh Norman continued his dominance over Tim Bevan, removing the playmaker with a catch to Michael Guts-

che at slip for 12. When Fisher trapped Nathan Paschke infront, the Warriors were reeling at 3/15. Jake Albrecht struck with two wickets to reduce the score to 5/34. Liam Schiller and Adam Borgas both managed 12, while Kym Taylor proved solid at the other end, unbeaten on 51 as his team could only manage 8/113. In reply, the home team added 48 for the first wicket before Ben Walter was caught and bowled for 20. Brad Walter guided

his team with 44 and Josh Deren was 22 not out in a memorable victory with seven wickets in hand and 16 overs to spare. Loxton coach Michael Gutsche said it was an allround team effort. “It probably was our best performance in a grand final, he said. “We work harder than any other club in the Riverland, so we deserve it. “This year we are just all about grand finals. Loxton will now turn its attention to reaching the two day final.

WITH GRAHAM CHARLTON

Loxton’s new recruits ■ LOXTON Football Club’s senior coach Mick Zerna has announced that the Tigers have signed leading Pinnaroo big man Ryan Nickolls for season 2013 to go with a group of four players mentioned previously as being recruited from Gaza in the Adelaide Amateurs. Nickolls has joined the staff at the Loxton High School this year. “Ryan will be handy as either a ruckman or key position player and with Ash Montgomery back this year and training strongly, our big man stocks have received a welcome boost,” Zerna said. He also confirmed that former Tiger junior Jackson Fielke, who was named in the Amateur A1 Team of the Year in 2012, will travel to Loxton with a group of his Gaza teammates, Tom Butler, with experience at South Adelaide, Bryce Williams (West Adelaide) and Benett Copping, who at one stage was on the Fremantle training list, to play. Zerna said that satisfactory arrangements had been made for the Adelaide players to train in the city while good numbers were already on the track locally for pre season training.

State women’s bowls at one venue ■ THE State Women’s Country annual round robin bowls competition this year from February 12 to 15 will be played at the one venue for the first time. All zones will gather at the Lockleys Bowling Club with the Region Four team’s rinks to be skippered by Kerry Treloar (Berri), Sue Lloyd, Noreen Burns (Lyrup), and Denise Baker (Barossa). Other members of the team are Jocie Cooper (Renmark), Barb Taylor (Waikerie), Gloria Burns, Carol Shugg (Barmera), Jan Grosser, Jenny Kubank (Berri), Raelene Reichstein (Loxton), Cheryl Davies (Cadell) and Karen Swanson, mother and daughter Judy and Eileen Argent and Mavis Elsworthy, a former Renmark and Waikerie bowler (Barossa). Di Brown has been a withdrawal from the team and was replaced by her Berri club mate Jenny Kubank.

Loxton in the finals hunt in Riverland baseball ■ LOXTON continued to keep itself in the frame for the 2012-13 baseball premiership when it defeated one of the top teams, Renmark Blue, 5-1 on Friday night. Loxton’s performance was sound with the allround impact of Josh Voigt on the mound and with the bat and strong hitting by Roger Taylor, Danny Fielke and Warrick Singh crucial in the end result. For Renmark Blue, on the other hand it was very much a matter of wasted opportunities as players like Stefan Best with the bat and young Jesse Stemberger, after he was moved to pitcher early in the game, working overtime to get their team into the contest. Loxton also looked like finals material as it remained cool under pressure. In other matches, Berri Red defeated Berri Blue 11-0 and Lyrup bounced back to form with a 17-5 win over Renmark White.

Navigating America ■ WHEN the media is dealing with off-road racing, the name Leanne Walker often surfaces as being the navigator for some of South Australia’s leading drivers such as the Waikerie Riverland Club’s Wally Francombe and Scott Schiller. Well it now turns out those fellows are not just skilled operators behind the wheel but excellent judges on who they want alongside them at the time. Leanne, of Waikerie, is acknowledged as one of Australia’s most experienced navigators and currently says that she is on the “opportunity of a lifetime” as she prepares to occupy a navigator’s seat at the Blue Water Parker 425 in Arizona, USA, early in next month. “To race in America is something that I have always wanted to do but never imagined I would get the opportunity,” she said. Leanne will be navigating for Gerardo Iribe, a head technician in the motor industry, who

also has a long history with offroad racing and has collected five class championships over the years and has won events the calibre of the Baja 100 and 500, Baja San Felipe 250, Primm 300, Laughlin Desert Challenge and Parker 400. Leanne has spent the past 22 years honing her off-road navigating and driving skills after first stepping into a navigating seat aged 12 at a Fun Day at Gawler Top Track and going on to operate in her first actual race in Morgan at the age of 14. She has a string of titles to her name and has appeared in the Finke River event on an amazing 14 occasions. Leanne will be in the navigator’s seat for Iribe for the qualifying session and the first 100 miles of the 425 mile race. “I am counting down the days until I fly out,” she said. “Excited is an under statement and I cannot thank everyone enough that has been involved to make this possible.”

Albrecht to lead Murray Districts Barrier ■ THE Manager of the Murray Districts Barrier team bound for the annual SACA Country Cricket Carnival in Adelaide next week, Jon Matthews, rates the line-up better than the competitive unit of 2012 despite the unavailability of SA Country Outback batsman Josh Deren. “We struggled at times last year for bowlers,” he said. “But this time we have plenty who can take a turn with the ball. “We will also bat right down the list which is a real advantage in these 50 overs a side matches.” Only two Riverland players,

surely the lowest number ever, were named in the 12 member squad, team captain and allrounder Jake Albrecht (pictured) and his Loxton teammate, opening batsman Brad Walter.

■ RIVERLAND teams ran into some strong resistance over the long weekend when they set out to defend their B and D grade titles at the annual State Softball Championships in Adelaide. With softball going the same way as many other sports that see reduced numbers of sides nominating for this type of event, the Riverland B team played in a combined A and B

grade four team round robin competition and then gained automatic entry into the B grade final where it lost to a strong Hills side 12-0 on Monday. The D grade team had four opponents in its division and had four games on both Saturday and Sunday for victories against Adelaide (twice), Sunraysia and Hills to sit second at the end of the minor round.

Matthew Hanberg is an opening batsman and leg spin bowler, Brenton Malthouse another opening bowler and middle order bat and Jarred Paull bowls right arm pace and bats left handed. “This is a very young side again,” Matthews said. “So we should continue to be improved in the field compared to a few years ago. “Fielding has been important in our better results in the last couple of carnivals. “This is a well balanced side with plenty of batting and bowling.”

The number of Riverland Dinghy Derby titles won by powerboat driver Linton Price.

Gordon’s Derby revenge ■ LEADING Renmark dinghy and powerboat driver Linton Price has won six Riverland Dinghy Derbys and took out the inaugural Riverland Dinghy Championship in 2010. But this year his appearance in the hotly contested series of races will be limited to round one, tomorrow night’s Dash for Cash. He will be the defending champion in the spectacular event that starts in front of the Renmark Club on the riverfront at 6.30pm. Not taking part in the 33rd annual Dinghy Derby, Linton seemed an ideal person to ask about the main chances in the race which also starts at the Renmark riverfront at 10am on Sunday. The Derby is South Australia’s unique boat race that attracts competitors and spectators from across Australia. Linton said “although I believe last year’s championship winner Matt Thur is anxious to go back-to-back and has been working hard both in the shed on his boat and in practice out

■ CONCENTRATION: Jason Gordon is a favourite for the 2013 Riverland Dinghy Derby title but will be without long term swinger Ben Pobke. on the water, I would not be surprised if the 2011 champion Jason Gordon fights back after some bad luck last year to grab both the Derby on Sunday and then go on to win his second title”. “Matt Thur won’t make it easy though and we had better not overlook the threat from Western Australian Jay Branson with reportedly a new boat and motor. “He keeps coming back

for the complete championship series and cannot be discounted. “Unfortunately it appears Kyle Gregurke will not compete this time because of work commitments but throw in blokes like Brent Martin and an impressive band in the Sports Rookies and other classes, you have another terrific race on Sunday and overall championship series.” Meanwhile, reports that

Jason Gordon will miss this weekend’s two rounds of the 2013 championship are half correct. With his long term swinger Ben Pobke retiring, the man who has stepped into the position, Hayden Schepel, is unavailable for Friday night, so Gordon will miss that event and concentrate on Sunday’s Derby. There is also a certain amount of intrigue about this year’s championships. After winning the Rookies class in 2012, Matt Lang is due to be elevated to the top grade but may be seen in a more family oriented class, Shane Palat and Barry Glover are reportedly moving up from Super Standards but it is not certain where they will nominate, while a close watch will be kept on Adam Price and Gary O’Ciepa in Sports Rookies. Completing a full weekend for dinghy enthusiasts, the ‘Tinnies in a Line’ challenge will again be held in front of the Renmark Club on Saturday.

Young Loxton bowler rewrites record books ■ KEEN observers at the Loxton Bowling Club believe the most obvious difference they see in their promising sixteen-year-old Tamzin Jenke since she returned from representing the South Australian under 18 girls team for the first time in Test matches against Victoria in Bendigo is a boost of confidence. Last week, with an aggressive display of bowling that belied her tender years, Tamzin took out the Loxton women’s singles championship, initially defeating ten times champion Lorraine Lee 21/18, then Region Four player Raelene Reichstein 21/13 and in the final Yvonne Speziali 25/20 after trailing 15/20. She is believed to be the first junior ever to win a Riverland club singles title.

Tamzin was pleased with her performances in Bendigo and is quietly confident of gaining selection in the state team that will play in the under 18 National Championships in Darwin in September. p

In the singles, she overcame early nerves to recover from 3-17 down before losing 16/25, she was involved in a heavy loss in the pairs but in the triples skippered the side to a two shot win 19/17.

Tamzin is believed to be the first junior ever to win a Riverland club singles title. The team against Victoria was extremely inexperienced compared with its opponent but Tamzin did enough to convince her that she could compete against some of the best young players in the sport, including Australian representative Tayla Morrison.

Then in the fours, SA lost the first game 18/25 before winning the next match 19/17. Tamzin, who has made appearances with the Loxton first division women’s pennant team when available and plays men’s third division on Saturdays, will now go onto the Riverland

Champion of Champions singles competition. Last Tuesday, Tamzin was also at the semi final stage of the Loxton mixed Pairs championship, partnered by men’s division one skipper Terry Thurston. Tamzin has followed the earlier path of her sister Candice into the SA under 18 girls team and now has younger brother Gerrin in the boy’s squad for the age group. Last Sunday he was involved in a ‘friendly’ at Barmera between players from the SA team and a number of local juniors. Impressive displays by another Loxton youngster Jacob Taylor, 12, resulted in him being invited to also join the SA under 18s.

Big crowd in attendance at Sunline Speedway ■ A BIG crowd attended the opening of Waikerie’s Sunline Speedway season last Sunday night with many no doubt anxious to witness the return of 360 Sprintcars and Late Models after both classes had not competed at the track for some time. Car numbers were down but the racing action was not with Chris Evans taking the honours in the 360 Sprintcars and Andrew Leach in Late Models. Chris Evans was over shadowed early by his son Daniel trailing in heat wins 2-1 and he also appeared to be in trouble in the 10 lap feature as he followed an Evans junior who looked to be doing it easy.

But Daniel was to lose control and spin out on the final turn on the last lap giving his Dad the chance to grab the win in a new 10 lap record time. Daniel recovered quickly to beat Clinton Oliver home in the minor placings. In Late Models, Steve Vaughan won the first heat but after that it was all Leach as he lowered the 10 lap record twice in taking out the remaining two heats and the feature. Vaughan pushed him hard, however, in the final race to finish second with Darryle Launer third. Six cars took part in Super Sedans with David Hartman winning the class ahead

of Steve Schwarz and Kym Hammerstein, while in Wingless Sprints only a superb drive by Lucy Evans in winning heat three narrowly prevented a clean sweep of the heats and feature by Jason Gantz in his return to the competition. Anthony McMillan drove well for third. Tony Prideaux, Albert Fell and Matt Starkey shared the heats in some intense Street Stock action but after it turned to controversy when Prideaux and Starkey were disqualified for contact down the back straight in the feature. Jason Gibbs took advantage of his prime position at the time to win the event from Mathew Rapisarda and Fell. Junior Sedans were as usual

well represented but with the event becoming something of a battle of attrition one of the drivers who had dominated the early heats with three wins, Andy Maxwell, ran out the overall victor from Heath Thorne and Dani Stumann. A flat tyre ended Kooper Greig’s race after he had also won three heats. The next Sunline meeting is on Sunday, March 10 and it will feature the Super Sedan Country series with other classes Modified Sedans, Street Stocks, Junior Sedans, Classics, V8 Modified demonstrations and a Figure 8 race. For further information on Sunline contact Rob Stevens on 0412 474 289.

Lake Bonney Yacht Club members compete at state titles interstate ■ OVER the long weekend, Lake Bonney Yacht Club members Kirsten Thomas and John Eshman headed for the Port River Sailing Club for the heats of the State Paper Tiger Championship and Peter Dunk travelled to Geelong as crew for the SA Yacht competing in the Australian Melges Titles. The program for the Paper

Tigers at Port River was hectic with two races in heavy weather on Saturday and three in lighter conditions on Sunday but Kirsten Thomas finished third overall and John Eshman finished midfield. Kirsten, in a good weekend, was also first in C Division, first women’s skipper and was named most improved. The absence of these boats

for local events left the number of yachts at home for sailing of the Handicap B4 race a bit light on. Strong southerly winds provided excellent conditions for Mosquito Yachts but unfortunately were too strong for Paper Tigers. Mosquito results were ‘Just Do It’, Steve Thomas, in first place from Mark Pfennig’s

‘The Matrix’. This weekend ‘Just Do It’ and Peter Dunk’s ‘Splashes of Brilliance’ will be off to the Mosquito state heats in Wallaroo, while at Lake Bonney on Saturday the race will be Handicap B3. Also a reminder that sail training for both children and adults will resume at 10am Saturday, February 9.

Serious injuries mar success at basketball carnival ■ THE Riverland had 12 junior teams make the annual trip to Gawler last weekend for the 10th Starplex Australia Day Basketball Carnival and came home with two titles. The under 18 girls team took out division two with a 37-26 win against Norwood in the grand final, while the under 12 boys, after narrowly missing a place in the division one finals, took out division two when it defeated West Adelaide 30-7. Other teams to reach the grand finals were the under 18 boys who went down in a high standard division one clash against North Adelaide 39-47, the under 14 girls division one who lost 18-29 to West Adelaide and the under 12 division one girls with a 18-31 result against Forestville. A downside to the weekend was the badly injured leg suffered by Loxton under 16 player Tyler Wagner after only about three minutes of court time in the opening match of the competition. Unfortunately injury also took its toll on the Riverland men’s A grade team in the city at Wayville at the State Country Championships when Berri’s Mark Howie was forced out of the tournament in the early stages with a severe leg injury. Already without stars like Craig Seekamp and Matt Lycett, it finished third and it was only a six point loss to Eastern Hills that cost the team a berth in the grand finalo. Earlier the A grade team had won three games including two in overtime and lost three including one in which it led by 15 points at the start of the last quarter only to go down by four. Dillon Millard (Barmera) and Tyson Hoffmann (Loxton) were amongst the stars of the carnival in an even team performance. Mount Gambier defeated Eastern Hills by eight points in the grand final to finish the weekend undefeated. In the women’s A grade competition, Riverland ran into strong opposition with coach Sonja Modlinski commenting that her team had probably lost some form and fitness during the long break in the local competition at this time of the year.

Long Course Championship confirmed for Murray Man ■ THE President of the Adelaide Triathlon Club Andrew Bartlett has confirmed that the 2013 Murray Man at Barmera will again be the Triathlon Australia Age Group Long Course Championship. Of course, this is probably not a surprise after the 2012 event received high praise for its organisation and Lake Bonney venue from Triathlon Australia officials and competitors from far and wide, despite it being conducted in extremely hot conditions. This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday, November 10.

Golf at Barmera, Waikerie ■ THERE has been a lot of golf played at local courses over the past week and at Barmera Bob Cornwall won the first of three stablefords with 43 points ahead of Brian Finn, 41. Phil Selfe had 21 points in a twilight event to beat Terry Fisher, with an eagle at the first, on 20 and finally on Saturday Mick Cenko, 42 points, finished clear of John Kniter, 40, and Fred Sutton 38. On Sunday, Steve Savrou won a stroke competition with net 67 followed by Joffa Rosbergen, 72, Eddie van Hensbergen, 72, and Carole McKendrick, 73. Then on Monday the Australia Day Ambrose had a distinct Barmera Monash Football Club flavour to it with a combination of Swanbury, Buchecker, Kassulke and Johns taking the win. Meanwhile at Waikerie, Derek and Anne Greenfield continued their good form winning separate stableford events, Derek firstly on Wednesday with 42 points and Anne on Saturday with 39.

Karoonda Golf Club in recess

■ FAST PACE: Competitors will take part in this weekend’s Riverland Dinghy Derby and Dash 4 Cash in Renmark in what is expected to be an action packed spectacle.

Full story on Page 27.

By GRAHAM CHARLTON GOLF SA believes the future of South Australia’s regional golf clubs is expected to come under scrutiny as membership numbers continue to fall. Karoonda Golf Club in the Mallee has gone into recess with concern from Golf SA that the lack of volunteer numbers at smaller clubs is also of concern. The Riverland has magnificent sporting facilities in all of its major towns, Barmera, Berri, Loxton, Renmark and Waikerie, including a number of golf courses. The well being of golf clubs in the region has been one area that has been widely considered. Golf SA chief executive officer Chris LuzRaymond said the Karoonda Golf Club has unfortunately gone into recess as it struggles to make ends meet. He also acknowledges the importance to communities of keeping their various sporting ovals and facilities, including golf clubs, which he said need to come up with some new ways to attract members. “The thing we have to do is to make golf as popular as any other sport and to make it accessible and I think some clubs have to look at other membership categories,” Luz-Raymond told ABC Radio. “Golf also has to look at what it is doing, so we need to look at nine hole golf and a couple of other innovative ideas.”

In the quarter final, he ran 5.488 secs on a dial in of 5.488, while his opponent, Dave Thornton of Mildura, ran 6.07 on a dial in of 6.10. This put Voigt through to the semi finals where he was to run against Mildura’s Rob Wilson in his hot rod. Fortunately for Voigt, Wilson’s car broke down at the starting

line, so he then had a bye run into the final. Alex Van Leuven of Coonawarra was Voigt’s rival and again luck was on his side as Van Leuven left before the green light came on and gave Voigt the win. The third and final round will be held at Coonawarra in March. Voigt was successful in winning

the Tri-series in the 2010/11 season. Last season he did not race as his dad Roger was building a new engine for the car. Mildura’s next meeting will be held on Easter Saturday, March 30 and will feature the Nitro Car Challenge. Voigt was one of a number of local drivers competing in the Mildura event.
