A $100,000 management plan for Lake Bonney consigned to history

A $100,000 State Government funded report recommending the long term future management options for Lake Bonney has been “consigned to the bottom of a draw in a desk somewhere”. Former Lake Bonney Management Committee chairman and Berri Barmera Councillor Mike Fuller said it is disappointing no action has been taken to implement the key research addressed in the long term management report.

He urged the State Government to act on the report, which outlines three recommendations for the long term future of the lake. “None of the three recommendations for the long term management of the lake are being presently considered,” Mr Fuller said. “The lake is currently just being left to the devices of nature and the good will of nature to keep it in a healthy state. “It concerns me that $100,000

sure the lake’s future and urged the State Government to make use of the report. “The report can be resurrected and the information used but really it’s all up to the State Government,” he said. “It’s not a local government issue at all and probably never should have been in the local government arena. “Without having a plan to follow and just allowing nature to take

its course, we’re not really going to make sure this lake will survive into the future. “The outcomes we want is for the lake to be managed properly and we really do need a management plan. ‘Whether it is from the work that has been done in the past or whether the government wishes to spend another $100,000…as long as the outcome is for the lake to be cared for into the future.”

By BRAD PERRY THE future of the Chaffey Community Centre will be reviewed after it has been revealed the facility’s chief funding program will no longer continue past December. The centre has been operating the Riverland Volunteering Pathways program for the past 18 months, which is funded by Regional Development Australia via SA Works. Renmark Paringa Council had obtained $25,000 of funding from the program to continue at the centre until December and had previously planned to receive another $25,000 from the program to run until the end of the financial year. The program represents a significant portion of the

Finally the speculation about possible cuts from irrigator water entitlements will be on paper for everyone to see. It is only a draft however and is likely to be ripped to shreds during the 20 week consultation. Can every community in Australia living along the basin system agree to a balanced plan? Is that even possible? Riverland irrigators are not going to accept a plan that lacks acknowledgement of past efficiency. I wonder whether we will still be drafting basin plans years down the track and angry communities will still be burning them in protest.

Staff at the centre will be responsible for submitting grant applications to operate programs and activities over the next six months, with successful grants reducing council’s

financial input. Renmark Paringa Council chief executive officer Tony Siviour said a steering committee has been formed to look at the future of the centre. “We’re wanting to have discussions with SA Works as to why the funding has been removed and what alternative funding may be available to run the Chaffey Community Centre,” he said. “We set up a steering committee and we want to talk to SA Works and the RDA as well about the regional pathways program that has been removed and what may be available to us as an alternative. “We’d like to look at what is the future of the facility prior to setting our budget next year.”

New water attraction set to boost local economy By CALLUM TRIFONOFF A LOCAL tourism park is hoping a new attraction will entice tourists to choose to stay in the region as the weather warms up. The Lake Bonney Holiday Park’s addition of a 14-foot iceberg water slide in mid-December is expected to be a major buoy for the Riverland. With another floating trampoline set to be added near the current one, along with the iceberg, manager Ian Willcourt said he believes the town of Barmera will only benefit from extra interest from tourists.

“On one side it’s got a rock climbing wall, on the other side it’s got slippery dips,” Mr Willcourt said. “Plus it’s got sort of perches at the top where you can sit like a seagull on the iceberg.” The addition of a second water trampoline is important as it can attract more youngsters, according to Mr Willcourt. “The one we’ve got coming will have the catapults attached,” he said. “We’re talking a major tourism attraction. “We’re trying to make the park a place that’s an attraction in its own right.”

BUSINESSES in the Mid Murray district are predicting an increase in job growth over the next three years as part of jobs growth and investment report released last week. The survey, which is distributed by Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland to five councils in the Murraylands every three years, predicts a total of 350 new positions to be created in the Mid Murray District Council area by 2014. With previously surveyed businesses in 2008 predicting 311 new jobs, the Mid Murray district is the only part of the region to predict more job growth due to a number of new projects in the area. The loss of irrigated dairy projects in the Karoonda East Murray and Southern Mallee District Council areas dented jobs forecasts in the Mallee. However, the investment and staffing predictions in the region can potentially change significantly with the Mindarie Mine likely to re-open next year. The 2012 to 2014 survey is based on 261 responses from businesses and councils across the Murraylands, predicting job and investment growth outlook. However the report also states that “if three successive bad years occur, the Cooroong and Karoonda LGAs are likely to loose a small number of staffing positions”. Business investment in the Mid Murray area is expected to be in the vicinity of $53 million by 2014, while the Karoonda East Murray district expects investment of $10,480,000 and Southern Mallee Council, $40,228,000 in three years. Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland chief executive Brenton Lewis said since 1998 the reports have traditionally predicted accurate forecasts. “The business environment at the time this was done would probably be the poorest one since the drought period and the global financial crisis, so I’m quite buoyed by the results,” he said. A similar survey is currently being conducted for the first time in the Riverland with a reported expected to be drafted by the end of the month.

Cooltong grower calls for locals to stand up and be heard

Citrus industry review By BRAD PERRY FED UP Riverland citrus growers are considering squeezing their own oranges and creating a niche Riverland juice as many struggle to survive on the low fruit prices. As Citrus Growers of South Australia recommend a senate inquiry into the Australian juice industry, Cooltong citrus grower Jack Papageorgiou said he cannot survive on current valencia prices. “We as citrus growers are seriously thinking about pulling a couple of growers together, or individually, and starting to process and squeeze our own oranges and start marketing our own juice because it’s the only way we are going to survive if we control our fruit from the farm gate to the consumer,” he said. “If I squeeze my own orange juice and I call it Cool Citrus Freshly Squeezed and then I knock on every door in the Riverland (to sell it), I reckon I would have 99.9 per cent support.” After more than four decades growing citrus, Mr Papageorgiou said the current situation is unacceptable. “There is no way we are going to continue passing on our fruit to our packers and processors and expect them to do their

best,” he said. “Their best is no good anymore, they are not giving us the returns we need to remain viable.” Mr Papageorgiou said many growers are weighing up their futures in the industry and a citrus summit, involving local growers, packers and processors needs to be held in the Riverland. “Packers and processors need to tell us, as citrus growers, our viability in the industry,” he said. “We’ve got to put them on notice that we’re not going to keep on growing citrus on half the cost of production. “If you want us to grow high quality fruit, we’ve got to get paid for it and we’ve got to get paid our cost of production. “The packers and processors,

An inquiry by the Citrus Growers of South Australia into the Australian juice industry, states South Australia now only produces as low as 40,000 tonnes of juice fruit, where the state once grew 180,000 tonnes. In the current season there have been reports of growers receiving between zero and five cents per kilogram for good quality juicing fruit. The inquiry calls on an independent umpire to oversee negotiations between growers and producers for a fair price to be achieved and wants answers as to why so much juice is being imported.

THE State Government has labelled a leaked water allocation cut figure as part of the Murray Darling Basin draft plan as the “landing spot of the Authority”. With the draft plan to be released to the public on Monday, an initial leaked figure of 2800 gigalitres to be cut from water allocations basin wide has left local irrigators concerned. State River Murray and Water Minister Paul Caica said the once in a generation opportunity to restore balance to the Murray Darling Basin must not be taken lightly. He vowed to include the Riverland in a unified state wide response to the plan following the release of the draft next week. “We’ve always said that the objects of the water act need to be fulfilled,” he said. “Those objects are of course to restore and provide enough water through flows to restore the health of the river and not just restore it but to maintain the health of the river. “We’ve said that at 2800 gigalitres, in our view, might not be enough to do that. “We’d be very surprised

■ Water Minister Paul Caica. because the work that we’ve done on 3500 and 4000 (gigalitres) still had some difficulties in regard to certain sections of the river. “We’ll being doing an analysis about whether or not the plan delivers and in turn deliver long term security for consumptive users, not the least of which is irrigators.” South Australian River Communities will study the plan upon its release on Monday and discuss the recommendations during a meeting on Tuesday morning. SARC spokesperson Ben Haslett said concerns in the region have been listened to

but he is unsure whether they will be acted upon. “We want a plan that recognises our past responsible water behaviour and we want a plan that is going to enable the communities, the food producers and the river to have a healthy future,” he said. “It (impacts of a 2800 gigalitre cut) would depend on how they are aiming to get the water back and it would also depend on how our State Government responds to the required water amount. “As soon as the official plan is released, we will be carefully dissecting that and we will obviously be talking to our State Government and we’ll also be making known our feelings on the plan.”

THE Renmark Paringa Council is further investigating taking ownership of the iconic Yamba tyre. At a meeting on Tuesday night, council decided to seek more information about the structure, despite discussion with the Department for Transport and a number of marketing companies. Renmark Paringa Council chief executive officer Tony Siviour said the overall integrity of the 24-year-old tyre is “fairly reasonable”. “What council resolved is it will look at taking over ownership of the structure but subject to some further investigations,” he said. “They want to look further into the costs of maintaining the structure and also the advertising potential of the structure. “It’s in a fairly reasonable condition, it’s got some minor defects on it. “They want to have all the facts and figures in front of them before they make that decision.”

Help stop the violence THE Riverland community will come together on White Ribbon Day tomorrow in a show of support to help stop violence against women. Riverland men are being encouraged to swear the White Ribbon Oath, which is an active demonstration of commitment never to excuse or remain silent about domestic violence. The oath will be available to sign at the White Ribbon Day event in Berri from 11.30am to 2pm at the Vaughan Terrace lawns. Violence against women takes a huge toll on the individual, the community and legal, health and welfare resources. Family violence is the major cause of homelessness amongst women and children and is a major contributor to mental illness and substance abuse. Everyone is welcome to attend the Berri event with a free barbeque to follow.

EVERY time Dianne Bosisto visited Renmark’s century old Glendower Homestead she felt privileged and became engulfed by its history. So much so that Ms Bosisto has purchased the iconic property and is hoping to restore it and use the home’s history in the region to promote tourism. “It was built at the turn of the century and it was owned by the Price family,� she said. “It’s a house I visited for years and I just love the ambience of it.�

Ms Bosisto would like to know more about the homestead, which has beautiful high ceilings, lead-light windows and a majestic ballroom. She is calling on the public to not only help her restore the historic homestead but to provide as much information about the residence as possible. Next month Ms Bosisto will give the public a rare insight into Glendower Homestead by holding an open day. “I’m on a mission to find out a lot more about it,� she said. “I’m hoping people will come with old photographs and stories

to tell me.� There is much potential for the Renmark building to become a tourism magnet in the form of a bed and breakfast or to host weddings, according to Ms Bosisto. “There’s quite a bit of water damage and there is cracks inside and out, which I don’t have the expertise to fix, so there is a whole range of resources I need to tap into as a new comer to the area,� she said. “I am in need of lots of good advice and practical help. “There is much to do, including plumbing, re-roofing, restoring woodwork and salt damp in-

The entourage, consisting of around 100 participants including former Port Adelaide legend Russell Ebert, former Adelaide Oval curator Les Burdett and radio personalities Jason ‘Snowy’ Carter and John Riddell, began in Waikerie on Monday and cruised through Morgan and Blanchetown on the way to Mannum. Incorporating 40 boats over five days, the event attracted a big crowd at its

Motion on Loveday camp passed A MOTION has been passed in State Parliament acknowledging the sufferings of former Loveday Internment Camp migrants. The South Australian House of Assembly this month backed a motion put forward by Member for Light Tony Piccolo to raise awareness on the hardships and grief of internees during World War II, including at Loveday. Mr Piccolo, who had an uncle who was imprisoned in the Loveday camp during the war, said those who were held at the site speak little of what occurred. “I’ve heard of some

who wouldn’t even talk to their families about it, so even families weren’t aware of it (what happened in the camp),� he said. “Now because of the time, the pain has sort of healed and also as a nation, we feel comfortable learning about it. “We need to say it happened, we acknowledge it happened, so we know what the impact was.� With the Loveday Internment Camp reaching 70 years since its inception, Mr Piccolo said he was motivated by its milestone to put forward the motion.

Fund distributes millions THE State Government this week handed out almost a quarter of the $20 million Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund with projects in Moorook, Waikerie and Loxton. On Monday, Regional Development Minister Gail Gago announced that Riverland juice company Nippy’s has received $2.61 million from the fund to increase capacity and expand milk processing operations. Nippy’s managing director Jeff Knispel said accessing the fund is part of a four stage strategy totalling $9.9 million to increase processing and manufacturing capacity at Moorook, Waikerie and Regency Park. “There’s an opportunity that’s presented itself to do some contract packing of powdered milk type products and we are gearing ourselves up to do that,” he said. “The interest or the inquiries are coming quicker and faster than we can cope with so the funding will mean we can get that (Moorook) plant up to a bigger capacity at a

BRAD PERRY much faster rate. “We’ve only got one filling line there at the moment, we want to put in a second line and then we need to build a new warehouse to warehouse the finished product.” Nippy’s Moorook plant’s processing capacity will be increased as part of the project, while the company’s Waikerie site will benefit from improved quality assurance and packing capacity. The Waikerie upgrade is due for completion in June 2012, while work at Moorook is due to be completed in December 2013. Mr Knispel said he hopes the expansion at Moorook will benefit the small town. “In addition to creating up to 25 new jobs in the Riverland, we expect that our increased production will help further promote Riverland

First Peoples’ Native Title ■ TITLE: A crowd gathered at Lake Bonney last week for the signing of the Native Title determination.

AFTER negotiations lasting more than a decade, the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee were recognised as Native Title holders of around 260 square kilometres of land and water in the Riverland on Friday. A small crowd gathered on the foreshore of Lake Bonney to witness the consent determination to finalise the Native Title application lodged in 1998. The First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee now have non-exclusive rights to access, hunt, fish, camp and undertake cultural activities, ceremonies and meetings at 380 Crown land allotments around Renmark, Berri, Barmera, Waikerie and Morgan. Two of the most significant areas of land include the Overland Corner Wetland Reserve, which will be managed by River Murray and Mallee Aboriginal Corporation and The Lake Bonney Recreational and Aboriginal Heritage Purposes Reserve, to be jointly managed by the Berri Barmera Council and RMMAC.

The State Government will also negotiate future co-management opportunities for a number of parks within the claim area. Aboriginal Affairs Minister Paul Caica said the signing of the Native Title was a historic moment for all parties involved. “Depending on where you sit...it can sometimes be a frustrating process but to talk to the people here today, it’s a day of celebration for them,” he said. “Not only a celebration of the work they’ve done but the recognition they’ve got and a celebration, with respect to, how this will be a significant change in the lives of the First Peoples in this region.” During the process, Justice John Mansfield said the resolution of the claim is a complete one. “There are no loose ends,” he said. “Today is the realisation of a long held dream for the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee.”

Loxton Community Hotel board of directors’ Wendy Mudge said the funding will help the venue target another demographic, with four star accommodation. “Early in the piece we had discussions with South Australian tourism and they were really helpful because they gave us direction as to where they felt they could see Riverland tourism headed into the

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Good samaritans I WOULD like to acknowledge the kindness shown by two people on two separate occasions. My wife dropped an expensive phone on the ground by the river in Berri and a Telstra worker found it and handed it into the local caravan park, where they rang a number on the phone to return it. On another occasion, while we were staying in Adelaide our precious puppy got out of our yard and it was gone overnight. The next day, we received a call from someone who had found our number from the Berri Barmera Council via the dog registration tag. She had found the dog, bought food for it and housed it for the night. To both of these good samaritans, we say a big thank you. You remind us that integrity is still alive and strong.

Empty shops, declining real estate prices, dead blocks; hardly a magnet for tourists or retirees? We have closed factories where food processors once flourished and we have closed expensive irrigation pipelines passing once productive land. Mr Whetstone wants to diversify away from irrigation farming without ‘taking the shine off the achievements’ of irrigators. Then what to grow? Australia’s and the world’s food security is currently at risk (Professor Timothy Reeves speaking at a local LAP meeting recently estimated world food supplies are at less than two months), yet growers here have fruit falling on the ground. What are governments doing to protect farmers from multi-nationals or predatory bankers or foreign buyers? They bailed out the banks without conditions, but bankers weren’t required to write off their gambling debts to receive taxpayer-funded bailouts. Those bankers demanded farmers sell all of their off-farm income earning assets before granting overdrafts for seeding to begin. Some bankers are presently waiting for growers to complete their next harvest in the expectation of them reducing their debt enough for the

bank to foreclose. It seems like irrigators and farmers who voted for Mr Whetstone were mistaken in their belief that they were voting for someone who would promote their interests and protect their livelihoods. Jeanette Staehr, Barmera

NE of the Riverland’s most anticipated events will take place next Friday when the Renmark Club Christmas Pageant fills the town with festive cheer. With up to 45 floats participating in this year’s pageant, organisers are predicting healthy crowds. Renmark Club Christmas Pageant chairman Nathan Haynes said a number of attractions from last year are back with sideshows and Santa’s Cave the highlights. While the street parade will show the creative side of the Riverland through float entries, Mr Haynes said the pageant will save the best until last with some special touches to this year’s fireworks display. More than 5000 people are expected to attend the event with many of the shops in Renmark remaining open for Christmas shopping. “It’s obviously a bit sad that the Renmark Show had to fold but it’s good that we can keep something like the pageant going, these things that have been going for many decades,” he said. “Having other activities like the sideshows and Santa’s Cave, it keeps people in the town along the riverfront until the fireworks are on.” The pageant will begin at 7pm from the Renmark Institute on the corner of Ral Ral and James Avenue, heading along Ral Ral Avenue, Renmark Avenue, across the median strip at 15th Street, back down Renmark Avenue and along Murray Avenue. Following the pageant at around 7.40pm, Santa’s Cave will be open and the fireworks will finish off the night at 9.15pm. Mr Haynes encouraged everyone to come along and have a good night out at the Renmark Club Christmas Pageant, a long standing local tradition. “It’s just a good night for everyone to get together and lift the spirits if they are down,” he said.

“It is always a good reason to get out and have a good time.”

School hosts multicultural day THIS Wednesday, Waikerie High School will show its multicultural side. Year six to eight students of Riverland west schools will be learning about and celebrating languages and cultures of Spain, Korea, Japan and Indonesia as part of a multicultural day. The day will be split up into two sections (morning and afternoon) and the public are invited to attend between 12 and 2.30pm. The morning activities will include workshops on the countries’ sports, music, pastimes and dance. The afternoon’s cultural presentations will include flamenco, karate, Indonesian drumming, Korean folk dancing and sumo wrestling.

Community helps tawny

A COMBINED Lyrup community effort has helped a baby tawny frogmouth find its home. Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Tim Fraser stumbled upon the baby bird on the ground in Lyrup and wanted to act immediately. “Most bird species are (intimidated) but because frogmouths make themselves look like a stick as their only means of protecting themselves, if any species allowed it to happen, it would be the frogmouths,” Mr Fraser said. A local helped out by offering a cherry pick (above) to reunite the bird with its mother. “The mother put her wing around the baby and took it in again,” Mr Faser said. “To have them breed in the schoolyard of Lyrup is a great thing.”

Brice’s efforts awarded By CALLUM TRIFONOFF RIVERLAND Special School student Brice Bromley has been rewarded for outstanding leadership by receiving a 2011 Riverland Just 2 Deadly Award. Since moving to the school at the beginning of the year, Brice has been a

model student. He thanked the school for helping him develop into an award winning performer and said he was proud to win. “It feels good to know I'm helping other students at school,” he said. Teacher Rosie Sandow was proud of how far Brice has

come since arriving at the school. “At the start of the year, he was a shy student and throughout the year, he has really opened up,” Mrs Sandow said. “He's grown in confidence and that is evident in being recognised for this award.”

Damage from the recent storm has failed to dampen the spirits of the Waikerie community with organisers still hopeful of widespread support for the pageant, which begins at 6pm. “We always get big crowds,� pageant secretary Jan Heppner said. “It really heralds that the Christmas season is coming. “People go out of their way to light up their gardens and their houses.� Adelaide’s Wild Matildas Bush Band will be the main entertainment on the night with the pageant expected

to be the big drawcard. “After the parade they’re going to the top end of McCoy Street and they’re going to teach us bush dancing,� Mrs Heppner said. “We’re hoping everybody gets in the spirit of things.� Santa will also make an appearance on the night and will be available after the pageant. The Waikerie community makes the pageant the success that it is, according to Mrs Heppner. “They go to so much work with their floats, it’s unbelievable,� she said. “It’s one night of the year where everybody turns up to not only see the pageant but to meet all your friends and relatives.�

Hume will be one of seven debutantes to play at the Australian Country Cricket Championships in Geelong from January 1 to 12. So close but so far for Berri A FEW weeks ago North Broken Hill were successful in the Murray Districts/Barrier zone, winning an exciting encounter against Berri off the second last ball, in a match which was played on Berri’s own home turf. One must say, Berri has been pretty unlucky at the higher level this season.

Time to rid of one day title IT is time to scrap the one day trophy and finals. While Renmark and Berri will more than likely play in the one day final, Loxton will now not play cricket until almost mid December. For a competition with only four teams, is it worth having seperate one day and two day finals? In previous competitions I have played in, all match points go towards finals at the end of the season for an overall title. Not only does it give more of a build-up to that final title, there will be more cricket played throughout the season. Seperating the Twenty20 competition was the right call but the RTCA now need to get rid of the one day title for the overall future of the game.

Since our last report, Lameroo, with half centuries to Josh Barrett, 70, Craig Altus, 52, and bags of wickets from Martin Sumner, 3 for 30, Josh Ridgway, 3 for 35 and Roger Pahl, 4 for 15, have defeated Pinnaroo, 217 to 135 and Parrakie 7/122 to 9/71, while its game last Saturday against Murrayville was washed out and points shared. Apart from a bad day in a Twenty20 clash against Lameroo, Parrakie has won two matches, 6 for 192 to Parilla’s 5 for 175, and 1 for 199 to 9 for 144 against Pinnaroo. And no, Parrakie’s success has not been on the back of any Hayden Thorpe show but has featured evergreen veteran Greg Stephenson, a former long term Murray Districts allrounder and SA Country representative. In the team’s two victories, ‘Stevo’ scored 84 and 112 not out and captured a 4 for 25. Other prominent displays have included Parilla’s Nick Dabinett, 69 and 57 and Tom Bascomb 4 for 24, Pinnaroo’s Brad Rosenzweig with 70, and Thomas Hawthorne with 3 for 27, Parrakie’s Jamie Simon with 3 for 25 and Murrayville’s Darcy Crane 4 for 18. International flavour for Aussies IT IS the Aussie way to give a bloke a go, so we will in the case of the appointment of South African John Michael ‘Mickey‘ Arthur as coach of our national cricket team. But that does not stop anyone from being a bit surprised by the move. Other countries have obviously considered former Australian players as prime coaching material. Names like Whatmore, Rixon, Lawson, Bayliss, Siddons, Greg Chappell, Moody and Geoff Marsh come readily to mind as some that have been overseas to coach. But the ACB has turned to Arthur who played from 1986 to 2001 in his home country, including with South Africa A, amassing 6557 runs at 33.45. He took over as South Africa’s coach in 2005 and did not have a lot of joy early, including a number of beltings from Australia. But he turned that around with nine test wins in a row, his country’s best ever period at that level and some good one day results with success against Pakistan, India, West Indies, New Zealand and England. In 2008 he became the first South African coach to guide his team to a test win in Australia. During a 2005/06 tour of Australia, he questioned the standard of umpiring, feeling there was bias due to over appealing by the Aussies. In early 2010 he resigned, apparently because of a fall out with Cricket South Africa. Obviously a very strong character, from there he was snapped up by Western Australia and now has beaten people like Rixon and Moody for our top job with suddenly, it appears, an abundance of emerging and exciting young talent to work with. We will give him a go.

Kruger’s top honour By BRAD PERRY AS guest speaker Essendon forward Matthew Lloyd was about to announce the winner of the 2010/11 Riverland Sportsperson of the Year at the Berri Resort Hotel on Friday night, he paused. The reason for the brief moment of hesitation was because the winner was footballer Leigh Kruger. It was fitting the 270 game AFL star presented former Loxton captain Kruger with the award, making him the fifth footballer to win the title in the Riverland Sportsperson of the Year’s 50 year history. During 2010, Kruger had an outstanding season in the Riverland Football League, captained the Eastern Zone in the State Country Championships before leading the state team in the Australian Country Championships, where he was the first ever South Australian to be named captain of the All-Australian Country Team. “To be named captain of the All-Australian team was something I will treasure for the rest of my life,” Kruger said. “From a young kid, I’ve tried to do everything to the best of my ability and play at the highest level and I still want to continue to do that for the next couple of years and still play representative

footy if I’m capable of doing that.” Kruger said being named sportsperson of the year is a big honour and he felt humbled to be chosen amongst a talented list of past winners. After playing football with Victor Harbor last season, Kruger will front for Loxton next year and he is hoping to continue enjoying the game. “The first thing is just to play footy for Loxton and have some fun with the boys and hopefully get a few kicks and win a few games,” he said.

Swimmers to show talent By BRAD PERRY BOLSTERED by a growing number of members and talent, the Berri Swimming Club will be looking to back up last year’s outstanding performance when the Riverland Swimming Association season begins tomorrow. After claiming the points, pennants and the overall swimming championship titles last season, the Berri Swimming Club will be hoping to begin strongly at the first meet in Renmark. The overall association is looking strong this season with Berri, Renmark, Waikerie and Loxton all expected to showcase the region’s talents

in the pool. Riverland Swimming Association president Jenni Trewren said many swimmers will be aiming to compete at the Country Championships in Port Pirie and State Championships held in Adelaide in January. “We would hope that those who performed well last season will certainly be up there again this season and there will be some aiming to swim at the state championships, as well as the country championships,” she said. In what is a full calendar for the coming season, Trewren said one of the highlights will involve swimmers observing.

Triathlon hailed major success

“Even though none of our swimmers are involved, I think the excitement around the Olympic trials happening in March down in Adelaide is a real positive for swimming this year,” she said. “I certainly know (Berri) members are keen to get down and watch some of the top swimmers from across the country because I don’t think as South Australians, we’ve ever had that opportunity before...because our facilities were not up to speed.” The season will be made up of three pennant and points meets, opens at each club and sprint and distance championships.

AROUND 150 competitors took part in the Riverland’s first Murray Man triathlon at the weekend. Held at Lake Bonney, the event was run by the Adelaide Triathlon Club (ATC) and was previously held at Murray Bridge. “The vibe was very positive,” ATC president Andrew Bartlett said. “I think Barmera residents were honoured this was happening in their town.” Victorian triathlete Xavier Coppock won the Murray Man male award finishing with a time of 4:08:20, ahead of Adelaide’s Kevin Ferguson who was clocked at 4:08:49. In the women’s event, Adelaide’s Felicity Lloyd won with a time of 4:26:56, beating Zoe Duffy (4:42:28). Mr Bartlett said the winners were impressed with the setting and the facilities at Barmera. “The winner, Xavier, from Victoria, got up and when he was presented with his trophy said ‘that was fantastic, I’m coming back next year to defend my title and I’m bringing my mates with me’,” he said. “So if someone like that can make a comment, it’s very reassuring to the organisers that you’ve done something right.”

“We provided a boat, we bring up the coaches, we bring up the paddles, we bring up the lifejackets and all we ask from the Riverland is if we can get 10 or 12 people to turn up,” he said. While the Adelaide based club has withdrawn support at this stage, Mr Perry said if there is some people willing to commit, he can organise for sessions to be held with the hoping of training a coach. If a club was to be formed, Mr Perry said there would be a number of benefits for the local area. “The potential in the Riverland is to have dragon boat carnivals and races interstate,” he said. “If there was a dragon boat club in the Riverland operating up there, then we could run races for our Adelaide clubs. “They could come up and that brings people into the Riverland and all the feed-offs go to local businesses.” The Adelaide Phoenix Dragon Boat club formed just over two years ago with 12 paddlers and has since grown to a membership of over 50. Bowl’s wash-out laws under fire ■THERE has been some confusion over local men’s bowls pennant matches that were effected by wet weather on the weekend. A letter issued to all clubs from the RMBA Board on Monday supported a decision by the Match, Program and Disputes Sub-Committee to cancel all of the games scheduled for the day, quoting sections 17.4 and 17.5 of the constitution. Part 17.4 states that a result can be declared in any match where two thirds of the ends have been completed but if this has not been achieved in any event that has been commenced, the match shall be be postponed and shall be continued at a later date from the score at the last end completed. Looking at first division, I see Barmera, at home,

trailed Renmark 22-27, Berri were down by some 15 shots to visitors Waikerie after four ends and at Loxton, the clash with Renmark had not started when the rain arrived. It could be argued that the round should be restarted on those grounds. However, section 17.5 states that if all pennant matches are cancelled, no catch-up matches shall be played and this is the section that is apparently being applied in the weekend’s case. On contacting clubs on Saturday afternoon, members of the Match, Programs and Disputes Sub-Committee ruled that in the circumstances the matches would all be cancelled. That was supported by results sheets issued by several clubs being not-

Amongst the committee members’ concerns were how to fit any catch-ups into an already hectic program. Interestingly, I notice elsewhere in the constitution that cancellation of matches rests with the umpire of the day, so this rule could have

come into play here. Don’t you just love confusing constitutions? It appears to me that above anything else, any disputes in all of our sports seem to involve the rule book itself, the constitution, or at least the way it is interpreted. Should we then have one common constitution, a brief

document containing clauses such as: A board of management shall be elected at an annual general meeting at which all clubs have delegates present. That board will be responsible for the management and general running of the association and its decisions will be binding

and final. Or perhaps even better still, an independent general manager shall be appointed to make such decisions. Meanwhile, section winners in last Sunday’s eastern zone bowls state pairs tournament at Waikerie were Berri father and son combination Dennis and Craig Treloar, Peter Kimber and Terry Thurston (Loxton), John Van der Wyst and Ken Smith (Renmark RSL), Gary Pursche and Andrew Fulwood and Ken Dubrich and Bill Haby (Waikerie). At the same venue this Sunday, Van der Wyst and Smith play Haby and Dubrich, with the winners to meet Kimber and Thurston for a place in the final. The other finalists will come from a match between the Treloars and Pursche and Fulwood.

Demons claim inaugural cup in controversial fashion â– FROM the best kept secrets file comes news that Tea Tree Gully travelled to the region and played a Twenty20 cricket match against Glenelg at Berri Oval on Sunday. Tea Tree Gully were untroubled in victory, with Redbacks squad member Jake Haberfield the chief destroyer, as Glenelg were dismissed after only 13 overs for 60, a score Tea Tree Gully reeled in

its 13th over. What followed was not such a secret, with the inaugural Real Reds versus Demons Twenty20 cup clash well supported by some of Berri’s leading A grade players, some past stars and an enthusiastic group of the club’s under 14 team and their Dads. Haberfield and several other Tea Tree Gully and Gle-

nelg members hung around to meet the youngsters and players and to enjoy some Berri hospitality. The Real Reds batted first and reached 80, thanks mainly to 28 from A grade dasher Danyal Reynolds and 20 and 15 respectively from Simon Frankel and his son Wes, who combined in an eighth wicket rescue mission of 32.

Another father and son duo Mark and Jack Kovacic opened the batting for the Demons and totalled 27 but that did not stop the game proceeding to a titanic and controversial finish. Berri stalwart and the chief organiser for the day Peter Safralidis, batting at number 11, joined Josh Kleinig with one run required to tie the scores and they managed

to scamper through for a tight single. But 2009-10 history was to repeat itself with the exuberant ‘Saf’ charging down the wicket to celebrate the occasion only to be run out by an alert ‘Doc’ Clifford in an act described by the victim as “low�. There were thoughts that 300 gamer Clifford was still dirty after be-

ing mankaded in the Real Reds innings. In the confusion however, the Demons grabbed the cup as someone had ranked them the highest on the premiership ladder, even though this was the first game between the two teams this season. Demons’ Owen Germeroth with three wickets and a sensational 24 runs took out the man of the match award.

■WITH a score of 80/75, Gundy Schmaal, of Loxton, won the A grade competition at last Sunday’s Loxton Field and Game 75 Target Sporting Clays Championship Handicap. Some good and tricky target placements, plus warm and windy conditions, tested the 18 shooters involved, with locals being joined by visitors from Adelaide and Renmark. Renmark’s Steve Markham, 77/75, finished runner-up to Schmaal, while another Loxton member, Kevin Nickolai, also shot extremely well but despite two 22s from 25 targets in the

first two rounds, his handicap of just four made it tough for him and he ended up in third place. Renmark’s Jason Hefford finished one target ahead of Loxton’s Paul Pippos, 82/75 to 81/75, in the B grade competition and Jeremy Pippos (Loxton) with 86/75 won the C grade event from Darryl Starr (Adelaide) 78/75. Meanwhile, Dean Kilsby, with a score of 305, won the Loxton Pistol Club’s 2011, 50 metre Black Powder Championship. Kilsby took the title ahead of Andrew Biele with 275 and Alan Reichstein with 193.

In other news from the club, South Australian Police have passed the new Centre Metallic Silhouette Shoot and a chronograph day will now be held this Saturday afternoon for anyone interested. The club President has also given permission for a come and try of the Silhouette Shoot on Saturday, December 3, between 3.30 and 4pm. Looking back at...

Tennis’ glory days Cricket schedule reviewed ■ A RIVERLAND Turf Cricket Association meeting was held last night to sort out some issues regarding player qualifications in a situation that should perhaps never have been allowed to surface. The issue delves back to round one of the A grade program when Berri, scheduled for a bye, could not muster a team when called on to play after the eleventh hour withdrawal of Monash from the competition. Reasonably the club asked for a week’s delay because it was unable to gather

enough players together at the last moment. Surely the best decision would have then been to hold the 2011-12 opening over for a further week. In the end, Renmark and Loxton were poised to play and that game went ahead, with Berri and Waikerie-Ramco then scheduled to have a catch up game. That clash is now scheduled for this Saturday with, in an awkward situation, Renmark and Loxton now having a weekend off. Berri has already, as I un-

derstand it, scratched Doc Clifford, Colby Harris and Matt Hughes from this week’s line-up because they played in the B grade on that opening day and the club’s thinking is that in theory you cannot be in two places at once. The RTCA management however obviously wanted further clarification on the situation and were looking to have all clubs represented last night. With so much work done pre-season on the constitution, surely there is an answer set in concrete?

Experienced golfer rates courses ■ EARLIER this year I touched on the amazing career of Berri golfer Brian Martin, who for some 51 years, has been a consistent performer at firstly the Murray Bridge course and then here in the Riverland. Brian has not just had an impact on the sport on the course but for all but 10 of those years, has been involved in club administration of some form or other. As an extension of that, for the past 18 months, he has been engaged by Golf SA as it looks at the rating of all 160 courses across the state. Golf SA was looking for 40 suitable people to be in-

volved in the project but only found 20, so Brian has worked at 11 of the venues in the metropolitan area, Barossa and, with his home course Berri an exception, in the Riverland. “Rather than simply looking at a course we have been considering the obstacles it contained, trees, slopes and the like and assessing how difficult they are,” he said. “It has been more of an objective rather than subjective approach. “It is a method that has been used in the USA for grading courses for a long time.” As well as his work with

Golf SA, Brian has also been included on a sub-committee for Golf Australia that is reviewing the handicapping system for players in this country. “They are changing to a system considered more equitable,” Brian said. “So far this has involved three trips to Perth for meetings.” Brian has not only been great for the game of golf as a competitor but has always been willing to work for the benefit of the game, which earned him the Steve McFarlane Contribution to Sport Award back in 2006/07.

■ TALKING to Riverland tennis all-round stalwart Mike Horsman recently, he commented on the large number of juniors currently playing right across the region, mainly in Saturday morning competitions. At the same time he acknowledges ongoing problems with the number of players available to local senior tennis. Our representation at the individual and team events at the annual country carnival in Adelaide has fallen right away. In recent times we have not held Riverland championship tournaments. However from the large base of junior talent presently on show, can things turn around? Can we get back to some of the former glory years when the Riverland was one of the strongest country tennis regions in the state? Take 1998 for instance, which is not that long ago really. That was a time when the Riverland had a full time development officer/ coach in Jason Todd and during that season we had taken eight teams to the

country carnival for a very successful result. A few other stalwarts were around back then working with the juniors, including names like Mike Schultz and John Pick.

The Riverland is not the only zone that has faded not only in the tennis scene but in other sports.

In Adelaide, the Riverland won the A grade mens and the A grade boys country titles and finished runners-up in both the girls A grade and junior boys C grade. In the Mens final, the Riverland defeated a tough opponent Jamestown, five sets to three over 42 games. The win was made all the more meritorious because key players Schultz and Pick, being school teachers, had left the team during the sectional matches to return home for work. Amongst their replace-

ments was 16-year-old Dean Carter, who had been playing top position for the boys team and it was the youngster who won the deciding fifth set playing in the number three position. Todd was in the team along with Horsman and he in fact, won all of his singles and doubles sets during the tournament and he then went on to take out both the singles and doubles titles in the individual events. It was perhaps no surprise then that on his return to the Riverland he predicted that the region would dominate the South Australian country scene in future years and would in fact get stronger, particularly in the junior area. And yes, we have produced a few good juniors haven’t we? Shannon Nettle, Luke Saville and Brooke Rischbieth to name a few. Of course the Riverland is not the only zone that has faded not only in the tennis scene but in other sports as well. But wouldn’t it be great to find a way to take the current strong junior base on a journey back to a year like 1998?

complain for nearly a month about their own new health issue, an itchy top lip, it does not seem to matter where you look, in the press, on the television, in sports crowds or on the street, there are moustaches

everywhere. In 2010, 130,000 Australians sported growths and raised some $25 million. It is a very worthy cause and there is still time to donate before Todd and Doc and their Mo’ brothers use their razors.

Dragon boat club to withdraw REPORT BY

BRAD PERRY AFTER two years of promoting the sport in the Riverland, the Adelaide Phoenix Dragon Boat Club has withdrawn its support in the region due to a lack of interest. The club, which has been holding dragon boat come and try days and demonstrations on Lake Bonney, is frustrated with a lack of committed paddlers attending the past four sessions. Two sessions were held in Barmera at the weekend with Adelaide Phoenix and Mildura Dragon Boat Club members attending but only three members of the public turned out. Adelaide Phoenix Dragon Boat Club Riverland promotions member Bob Perry said the lack of attendance has been frustrating. “Mildura have a dragon boat club paddling and were looking forward to the Riverland forming a club so they had someone close by to compete against,” he said. “Mildura Dragon Boat club sent some of their members, including the committee, to paddle and meet the Riverland paddlers on the weekend, however there were only three people from Berri who attended all weekend.” Mr Perry said there was initial interest in dragon boating in the region two years ago with around 25 potential paddlers but that interest has since waned.
