Riverland operators are experiencing the biggest visitor influx for years
TOURISM BOUNCES BACK A NUMBER of Riverland tourism operators are experiencing their biggest influx of visitors in four years after bouncing back from last year’s high river. The Christmas and New Year period are generally peak times for accommodation outlets and tourism operators but the prospect of warm weather and the healthy River Murray has seen an overwhelmingly positive response. Loxton Riverfront Caravan Park
proprietor Ross Priestley said tourist numbers throughout December and so far in January have been extremely positive. “We’ve done a lot better this year than what we have for the past three or four years, he said. “Which to some degree surprised us because we would have thought we would have lost some of our regular people from last year but they’ve come back to us and we’ve picked up more as

really well, Mr Priestley said. “In fact we think that we’ve actually got the park better than what we had it pre the flood, given that we’ve really had to go around and do a lot of repainting and cleaning and so forth, which has freshened things up. “Only three months ago there wasn’t a blade of grass in the lower section of the park and now we’ve got it pretty well covered with grass and people have
commented on that. “We’ve had quite a bit of expense we’ve incurred during the course of the year with the high river and this (tourist influx) helps us to offset that a little bit. Renmark based Liba Liba Houseboats owner Greg Austin said in January last year tourism should have been booming and it was not but this year is a different story. ■Continued Page 4

3000 people welcome the New Year at Time Machine

Tourist in my own backyard AS I sat back in my comfortable chair overlooking the River Murray, watching the sun go down on New Year’s eve, I began to wonder whether I take such moments for granted. My friends and family love heading up the river for a visit, probably not to say hello to me but to head straight for the cool and inviting river. Our surroundings are magnificent. I am often privileged enough to see the sun set, watch a flock of birds cruise across the skyline or have a dip in my very own swimming pool, the River Murray. The good news is that many more tourists are starting to see what I see. Just a few hours from the hustle and bustle of the city we are situated. To visit is not expensive but the experience is certainly enriching. Through the festive and New Year period, local tourism operators are reporting some of the largest numbers for some years. Around this time last year, tourists stayed away due to the misperception the region was flooded. With the national ski titles to begin next week in Barmera, this is the start of a what we hope is a great year for tourist operators. Most importantly, I will continue to be a tourist in my own backyard.

By CALLUM TRIFONOFF OVER 3000 people welcomed the arrival of 2012 at the Riverland’s biggest ever New Year’s party in Renmark on the weekend. Time Machine consisted of entertainment and attractions between the Renmark Hotel and Renmark Club. Renmark Club manager Brenton Franks said the event was a fantastic night for everyone and a boost for the local economy. “It’s fantastic for the Riverland that so many people support something we’ve tried to put on,” Mr Franks said. “We sold a lot of tickets in Mannum, Murray Bridge and Mount Gambier. “We had a lot of people from the city as well. “It was a good response from everywhere.” Mr Franks said Time Machine will continue to be an annual event in the future. “We’ll probably start planning in four months time and see what we can get done,” he said. Meanwhile, around 100 people attended the Monash Club for the countdown to 2012, while many attended other venues across the region. Monash Club manager Peter Scotford said many people in attendance struggled to make it to midnight. “The people we had tended to leave before New Years,” he said. “They had enough by 10 o’clock but there was still plenty of people left.”

Car and bike run for Mal “It’s been quite frustrating just now because they’ve still got the royal enquiry going on, so they’re still in the blame game,” he said. “What they have said is they are going to need a lot of money to get them out and that even if the government come in and get them out it will be up to the families to basically get the bodies home. “For them (the family) they are getting their boy home and he will get buried in the local graveyard next to his gran and grandad.” With local businesses donating prizes and many locals participating, Mr Wallace said the event will also be a great tribute to Malcolm, who lived in the Riverland for 10 months. “Just about every business we’ve asked has said ‘not a problem, we’ll donate a prize or we’ll come up with some money to sponsor you’,” Mr Wallace said.
By BRAD PERRY AROUND 200 vehicles are expected to take part in the Riverland Car and Bike Poker Run titled “Mal’s Ride” this Saturday, raising money for the New Zealand Pike River Mine Recovery. The event has been organised by Barmera residents Jim and Tania Wallace as they prepare to help bring the body of their nephew Malcolm Campbell home. Over a year since the New Zealand mining disaster, rescuers have been unable to retrieve the bodies of 29 miners. The run, which will begin at Barmera and travel across the Riverland, will see Malcolm’s parents and sister take part. Mr Wallace said support for the event has been overwhelming and he said funds will go to a much needed cause.
Registration for the event will take place on Saturday between 10.30am to 11.45am at the BarmeraMonash Football Club. From noon, the run will visit Barmera, Loxton, Moorook, Berri, Lyrup, Paringa, Overland Corner and finish at North Lake Caravan Park in Barmera. There will be lucky card and best hand prizes at each stop, with entertainment and food provided at the final stop in Barmera at 5pm, as well as a charity auction. For more information contact Jim on 0417 886 994 or Tania on 8588 1114. ■ RIDE: Jim Wallace has organised a Riverland Car and Bike Poker Run this Saturday to raise money for the recovery of his nephew’s body from the New Zealand Pike River Mine. Lack of bin pick-ups rubbished
No funding for dog pound upgrade THE upgrade of a dog pound for the Renmark Paringa area will push forward despite a lack of funding from outside sources. With $30,000 already budgeted towards building works at the facility, the Renmark Paringa Council approached the Dog and Cat Management Board hoping for assistance to cover half the costs. However, Renmark Paringa Council chief executive officer Tony Siviour said there is no funding available for dog pound construction and council will fund the project itself. “We sought some funding through the Dog and Cat Management Board, however we have been advised there is none, it’s only for the education of the community,” he said.

By BRAD PERRY THE Mid Murray Council has denied claims that overflowing public rubbish bins in Blanchetown have not been emptied for up to a week. A regular Blanchetown visitor has raised concerns that more than 20 public bins full of “repulsive” rubbish have been left for almost a week without being cleared, giving tourists a bad impression of the town. The visitor, who wished to remain anonymous, has been a regular there over the past 25 years. The person said the situation with rubbish is the worst it has
ever been. “The smell is bad because you’ve got five to six days of rotting food and possible seafood sitting there, so it certainly doesn’t look good for the town,” said. they said
“There is just rubbish everywhere and rubbish is being blown around the town. “Usually they (council) are pretty good at picking up the bins and emptying them out.” Mid Murray Council infra-

structure services director Jon Fry denied claims the bins had not been emptied for up to a week, stating rubbish is cleared every two to three days at the most. He said it was the busy festive
and new year period that could possibly have seen the extra build up of rubbish. “People tend to have a look and the bins overflowing and they come the next day and have a look and it’s overflowing (again) and they think it hasn’t been emptied, well it has been,” he said. “The public bins were being done approximately every second day but some days they might of gone for three. “There is no way in the world the bins would have gone six days without being picked up.” Mr Fry said he had received no complaints in regards to the rubbish in Blanchetown.

Ramp ready to go for ski titles By BRAD PERRY THE brand new boat ramp at Lake Bonney will be completed this weekend in time for the Australian Speed and Marathon Ski Racing Championships in Barmera beginning on Monday. After a hiccup during the construction phase where the ramp was removed because it did not meet South Australian Boating Facility regulations, Berri Barmera Council chief executive officer David Beaton said problems have been rectified. “The ramp is ready, they’ve just got to take away the coffer dam around it and we’ll fill the carpark around that this week,” he said. “The concrete there looks really good now. “We would expect it would be pretty right by the weekend.” The new ramp is key to attracting the national ski titles and other events to the region, according to Mr Beaton. “I think it (the new boat ramp) will give greater access and it will be better for speedboats to get in and out of there,” he said. “There will be a greater parking area for boats and trailers as well, which should make a difference and make it easier to use Lake Bonney.” With more than 200 entrants taking part in the ski titles from Monday until Saturday, the local economy is expected to be given a vital boost. “I think it’s a great thing to get that sort of exposure and get that sort of influx of people and machines into the area,” Mr Beaton said. “It will be a good boost for tourism and it will help to keep putting the Riverland on the map as an area that is going ahead and somewhere that is a good area to come if you are a tourist.” Meanwhile, the official unveiling of the commemorative wall in honour of local water skiing legend Sue Fieldhouse will take place at Lake Bonney on Saturday at 1pm. The development of the wall was undertaken by community members who wanted to recognise the achievements reached by Sue. Plaques will also be unveiled acknowledging Barmera Water Ski Club members who have achieved national or world records.
River red gums sprouting again
■ ALIVE: Young river red gums and black box saplings have began to sprout across the region. FOLLOWING the recession of high river flows in the region, there has been a large increase in the emergence of young river red gums. The South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management (SA MDB NRM) Board conducted field surveys, as part of the wetland monitoring program, at managed wetlands in the Riverland throughout September and December last year. The data collected provides information on the changes within the wetlands. This monitoring has been particularly important in helping to understand the ecological responses that have occurred as a result of the highest river flows into SA in 18 years. SA MDB NRM wetland field staff have observed river red gum saplings at all managed wetlands. Black box saplings have also been observed on the floodplain in the Loveday area and are likely to be found along other parts of the river. A small cluster of juvenile prickly bottlebrush has also been observed in the Morgan area. Prickly bottlebrush is listed as rare in South Australia and Victoria and is found along the River Murray between Waikerie and the Lower Lakes. Both river red gums and black box require further flooding in the next three to seven years to maintain good health of the saplings.

Tourists visit in high numbers ■ From Page 1 “Last year was very disappointing with the tourists that stayed away because of the river,” he said. “We were in flood but it was only high river and everyone thought the whole region was flooded.” Twelve months on and the houseboat business is seeing many bookings and plenty of interest in holidaying in the region. “It’s fantastic just to see people back in the region whether they are houseboating or just down the street spending some money,” Mr Austin said. “(People are saying) just how good everything is looking in the river system, especially the fishing.” With full capacity during the Christmas and new year period, Berri Riverside Caravan Park manager Kay Kubank said more families came to the region to take part in Loxton Lights Up and Time Machine. “We’ve got another wave of people now and that carries through until the end of
January,” she said. “It’s the time the Riverland can maximise the visitor’s spending dollar in the area, not only within caravan parks but they are out and about looking at things and participating in things.” It has been a very busy time for Waikerie Caravan Park manager Lynn Gabb and she expects visitor numbers to continue to be solid throughout January. “I think everyone depends on it being busy to make up for when it is quiet,” she said. “The more people we get to come into the town and stay here in holiday time the better it is for everyone. “We’ve had quite a few people staying from interstate during Christmas.” Being away from the crowds is one of the reasons Adelaide’s Harry Lambert decided to visit the region. “There’s less flies and luckily less mosquitoes,” he said. Another Adelaide visitor Brooke Fee said she came to the Riverland before New Years and will definitely return. “We’ve enjoyed visiting fam-

Riverland cricket umpire has had a long and distinguished career with home always on his mind
Best of both worlds for Ian WHEN Ian Berry gained the opportunity to umpire cricket in Adelaide he was not prepared to give up his Riverland lifestyle. The former international umpire travelled weekly from his Renmark home to Adelaide and back, clocking up almost 60,000 kilometres in the process. Born in Pinnaroo, Ian grew up in the small community before accepting a job as a projectionist at the Renmark drive-in. It was not until he ventured to a game of cricket at Renmark in the 1970s that he stumbled across the enjoyment of umpiring. “I happened to see a chap with a little golf seat sitting out there umpiring cricket,” Ian said. “It looked quite strange and I said to the guys, ‘what's that out there?’ and they said 'that's the umpire'. “I made the big mistake of saying, 'I reckon I can do that' and then the boys said 'can you do it better?' and I said 'I think so, just by standing there' and they said 'right, your on'.” It was an unusual start to a career which is believed to have spanned towards 500 games of umpiring cricket. Work was busy for Ian as the drive-in at Renmark saw large numbers through the gates during the 1970s. However there was always time for umpiring and Ian offciated in the Riverland cricket competition for three seasons before an opportunity arose to umpire at a country carnival in Adelaide. “I had some favourable opinions from ex-players like Les Flavell,” he said. “They suggested I could probably umpire in Adelaide, so that's how it really took off and how it started.” So Ian began to make frequent trips to Adelaide on Friday, returning to the Riverland on Monday to work. There was no thought of living in the city.
REPORT BY
BRAD PERRY “It was just the country lifestyle and I kept on coming back,” Ian said. “I enjoy the Riverland, it is not quite the rat race that it is in the city.” One of the main reasons he travelled back to the Riverland on a weekly basis was Ian's love for the community being a member of the Renmark Masonic Lodge and head trainer at the Renmark Football Club for over two decades. Following a match between England and a South Australian Country team, Ian impressed with his umpiring so much that he was given the opportunity to be an official in Adelaide's district cricket competition. His grade umpiring career would consist of 332 games, including 189 at A grade level.
However, it was the next part of Ian's career which saw him really shine, when he was rewarded for his efforts with his international umpiring debut. Overall he would officiate 11 one day internationals, 17 state games and a number of youth tests,

RECENT scorching temperatures pushing above 40 degrees have kept local swimming pools busy as many from around the region try to beat the heat. Renmark Swimming Centre manager Ken Wilkinson said recent high temperature days such as Sunday and Monday, which reached 40 degrees plus, have helped make up for a slow start to summer by the pool. “We’ve had a very good response,” Mr Wilkinson said. “We watch them during the day and you’ll see 10 people go and 10 more people come. “They come and go all day.” There was no relief over the Christmas period with temperatures reaching in the high 30 degrees and it was a very warm start to the new year as well. Mr Wilkinson said many tourists are defying the heat and heading to the region. “For those in the industry, the January holiday period is the

Today Ian officiates in the Riverland Turf Cricket Association and continues to enjoy the game. “It's being able to be a part of the game without being in the game and that's one of the most important things and to be quite impartial to what is actually happening,” he said. “You get to know a lot of the guys and what I am pleased about is there is a lot of young guys playing the game.
Caica could not predict an opening allocation figure, he said overall storages in the Murray Darling Basin system are strong. “The system has water in it and on the analysis that we’ve been provided with, that augers well for... allocations at this point in

“We’ll just have to wait and see but let’s put it this way, we’re in a very good position at this point in time. “It augers well for next year compared to what we were looking at in 20062007.”

Trees pose bushfire threat to homes By BRAD PERRY RESIDENTS on a Renmark street are “dead scared” about the potential bushfire danger from an allotment of dead citrus trees adjacent to homes. Those living on Korinthos Street and the surrounding area in Renmark are being put at risk by the fire threat from acres of dead fruit trees, with more scorching temperatures expected over summer. Resident Geoff Searle said an area of trees close to the fences of homes has been slashed but he said the danger still remains. “This whole area are these dead trees, so a little fire that starts on a bad north wind day... or with any wind, it’s got a huge potential,” he said. “You get a mid January, mid February stinking hot 45 degree day with north wind and all of these houses will just (burn). “I’d like to get this block cleared and the stuff carted away because it is too late to burn, failing that they should be pushed into a couple of heaps up by the creek somewhere. “If they (the trees) are in three or four big heaps, if something happened you’ve got some chance of containing the heap but you’ve got no chance of containing this.” Mr Searle said at least 10 houses were at risk if a fire was to start amongst the trees.
Previously when trees were burnt on a nearby block, Mr Searle said ash embers were blown onto his property and burnt holes in his shade cloth and ash covered cars and lawns. He said it was a stark reminder of what could happen if the former fruit patch became alight. “When this block was burnt here, the ash from that landed on the other side of our street,” he said. “Our cars and lawns were just white, they looked like snow.” Upon complaints about the block to the local council, Mr Searle said the area had been satisfactorily slashed and trees were pushed over. However, he said solid rains throughout winter has created undergrowth creating freightening fire potential. Mr Searle wants the block cleared, the trees carted away or at the very least pushed well away from houses, so residents no longer have to fear what will happen if the dead citrus trees catch fire. “(The trees are) all dry, dead for at least five years and there is enough undergrowth there to carry it (a fire) forward,” Mr Searle said.

With the weather reaching sweltering conditions in recent days, the Renmark Hotel offers a range of cold drinks, all under the Amanti brand. Manager Michael Schuetze said the hotel’s range has proven to be a popular summer treat. “The frappes, iced chocolate and iced coffees have a good

reputation,” Mr Schuetze said. “A lot of people enjoy them.” Mr Schuetze said despite typical summer weather the taste and flavour of hot coffees and drinks remains popular. The regular drinks expertly made by the hotel’s experienced staff include cappuccinos, flat white, long black coffees and chai tea. One of Mr Schuetze’s recommended selections when heading to the hotel for coffee is the affogato, where you can add liqueur or whisky for extra flavour. Why not complement the top class coffee with a wide selection of sweets. “We have gluten free biscuits and cakes that are all locally made,” Mr Schuetze said. The reason the hotel’s coffees have been so popular for so long has been due to the consistency of the blends, according to Mr Schuetze. “Our staff have been trained to provide similar styles,” Mr Schuetze said. “We focus on providing good consistent coffees for our customers so they come back for more.”

Thursday January 5, 2012 – Riverland Weekly • 19 Keeping a short and sharp eye on what’s happening around the Riverland and Mallee

AND ANOTHER THING...
New hobby at Monash Festive market to remember â– FAST LEARNERS: (Back from left) Pam Galloway, Joy Sweet, Nicole Hansford, Lara Copson, Hannah McCreanor, Demi Vithoulkas, Lara Corman, Rachele Pfeiffer, Pat Pfeiffer, Yvette Webber, (front from left) Hayden Dawson, Ethan Obst, Hayley Koina, Jasmine Russell, Gurvir Singh and Liam Holder taking part in knitting a blanket for the less fortunate at Monash Primary School.
AROUND 15 keen Monash Primary School students learnt how to knit recently. The dedicated boys and girls met once a week at the school during lunchtime along with Christian pastoral support worker Jess Main and four wonderful helpers. Together this group knit-
ted individual squares and learnt to sew them together to form a beautiful knitted blanket that is going to be sent overseas. “The students were very keen to share the product of their hard work with those less fortunate than themselves, Jess said. “They are very proud of
their efforts and want it to be sent to people who can’t afford enough blankets in the cold of winter. The group also has plans of continuing next year, perhaps branching out into other skills such as crocheting and knitting scarves which could also be sent overseas.

Lameroo’s musical talent TWO Lameroo students featured solo performances during a concert by the Goolwa and Strathalbyn Concert Band recently. The performance at the Lameroo Hall saw Kurt Miegel (trombone) and Lauren Willcox (flute), provide impressive efforts individually and with the band. Big Amazing Mallee show impresses conference goers
â– CAPE: The B.A.M (Big Amazing Mallee) presentation came from Lameroo Regional Community School students (back from left) Mercedes Sumner, Brooke Hand, Amber Secomb, Sophie Pahl, Matilda Hancock, Sheree Lock, Stacey Brown, (front from left) Nathan Sracek, Kurt Miegel, Bella Jettner and Lauren Willcox.
ELEVEN students from Lameroo Regional Community School attended the three day International River Health Conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre recently. The students presented their workshop entitled BAM – Big Amazing Mallee
twice during the conference to over 50 students and staff. School officials said the students are to be commended on the confident way in which they represented the Mallee and the way in which the small towns care for the unique
environment. Other highlights for the school during the conference included gala dinners, the comedy panel, elective activities in the Botanical Gardens and attending presentations by other students on their own local environmental themes.

By CALLUM TRIFONOFF KLEEMAN is a family name synonymous with Waikerie and Darren has a strong passion for the town. Having lived in Waikerie his whole life and seeing the town grow, it is no wonder Darren always has a jolly smile on his face. For three generations, the Kleemann family have been involved in the building and carpentry trade and Darren has continued on
the tradition. Dedicated to the town’s sporting teams and various other community projects, if you name an event that has happened in Waikerie recently, chances are Darren has been involved. Some of the projects and groups Darren has been involved with include a sportsman’s committee, captaining the local golf club and being involved with the popular Music on the Murray. Darren said he cannot see
himself living anywhere else but Waikerie. “I just love Waikerie, he said. “I’d never move. “My brother and sister live in Adelaide and they’re still envious of me living in Waikerie. “They still miss the country life, the Waikerie life and the Waikerie people. “I love the fact that I can just wake up and go to the golf course and you don’t have to book in.

is the next step in Ekisa’s dream of a career in the English Premier League. “I’ll be looking to play soccer in Adelaide and to get billeted, he said. “I’d like to play anywhere but Croydon will be best. Originally it was Croydon’s rival North Eastern MetroStars which showed interested in the quick footed and skilful junior. However, the Kings stepped up negotiations
after the Barmera Dev Estate Top Four Cup winner was recommended by former Berri River Ranger Lewis Vallelonga. While Ekisa’s hopes are pinned on taking the big leap in his soccer career by playing in Adelaide, he will always remember the competitive and fun nature of Riverland soccer. “I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and all of the clubs have been good to me, he said.

CONSISTENCY is paying dividends for competitive Loxton speedway driver Keke Falland. After five of the eight rounds of the All Star 360 series, Keke is leading the points table even though he has not won a feature race to this point. He has grabbed heat victories but the nearest he has been to a feature win was in Mount Gambier when he finished sec-
ond “by some two feet. Coming home in the top five at most features in Murray Bridge, Mount Gambier and in Victoria at Rosedale, Nyora and last weekend at Mildura, has led to Falland leading in the series which is primarily a SA-Victoria affair but has drivers involved from ACT and Queensland. Also there has been strong performances in other events and this weekend, Keke will start his eye catching 360 at ■FAST: Loxton speedway driver Keke Falland’s wheels. Speedway City in Adelaide.

THE local ‘Hit It’ team had a good work out for next week’s Australian Speed and Marathon Ski Racing Championships at Barmera’s Lake Bonney when they took part in a 14 boat get together at Mildura last weekend ‘Hit It’, the SA champions in 60mph class in 2009 and 2010 and in the eight litre class, winners at the Berri 90 and second at Murray Bridge, are in good form too. In one Mildura friendly, the ski team headed home one of the ‘Mojo’ boats raced by the Kelly brothers, Todd and Rick, who are well known for V8 Super Car fame. ‘Hit It’ observer Chris Philp confirmed that the popular Kelly boys will
■Local ski team Hit It. bring their boats ‘Mojo’ and ‘More Mojo’ to Barmera for the nationals. Damien Philp will drive ‘Hit It’ next week with the boat to tow local skier Saxton Brown in both 70mph expert and social classes, Mitchell Williams in eight litre, Mypolonga’s Clark Stegmeyer in social mens and Bacchus Marsh’ Georgia Savona in under 16 girls. Chris explained that although next Monday is set aside for scrutineering, many of the boats will have travelled from all parts of
Australia and will be anxious to get out on the water for an unofficial practice. Then on Tuesday, events start with under 10 boys and girls and progress right through the week to inboard and outboard unlimited and super classes where speeds up to 200kph can be expected. The start and finish lines will be in front of the Sunset Boulevard building with the action starting from the boat ramp opposite the Barmera Monash Football Club. Admission is free with the event fully catered and entertainment for children provided, including carnival rides. The final Saturday is a lay day to allow any outstanding events to be completed if there are interruptions to the scheduled program.
Concern continues to be shown over bowls washout regulations â– From Page 24 I hope they are persuaded otherwise, as a look at the saturated program then the bylaws suggest that they were always going to be in danger of ending up between a rock and a hard place in any decision made, even if it was in the interests of the game and its players. â– The clubs that took the matter to Bowls SA for adjudication: I think it is extremely unfair to blame them as like me and many others just looking in from an outside perspective, the decision appeared confusing
in the circumstances. â– The constitution/bylaws: A real contributor and in need of a rethink. Why on earth would you have a clause like 17.4 in the document, when it was obviously going to be a problem fitting any restarts into the season if rain caused such interruptions to matches? â– The program: Now here is surely villain number one. It must be nearly 30 years ago that RMBA stalwart Peter Budden on my 5RM Saturday Sports Show repeatedly made mention of problems created by a program that was absolutely crammed
with events. And nothing has changed. I note that the women’s program has days set aside for catch up matches Also, it is interesting to hear that in the action taken by clubs to accommodate the outstanding rounds seven and eleven before the end of January, we are going to have such things as early morning starts, double headers or even a division two game being played under lights. Some new ground there and it will be interesting to get any feedback to those innovations.
Street Stocks Spectacular set to draw big crowd at speedway AFTER staging a highly successful round of the inaugural Sidecar Grand Slam to open its 2011-12 season, Riverland Speedway will be back in action on Saturday with the feature event 28 cars in a MJS Street Stocks Spectacular.
Local drivers will be joined by visitors from Murray Bridge and Mildura. Courtesy of Higgs Contractors the program will also include a Victoria versus South Australia Modified Challenge, while the popular Demolition Derby
is certain to leave the usual carnage after plenty of thrills and spills with gates open from 5pm. Riverland Speedway has worked hard to improve its facilities and track and excellent viewing areas are provided.

Riverland sporting year in review A
RANDOM browse through the files of Sports Goss and other items of news from the year 2011 simply confirms how important sport is to our region and how fortunate we are to have so many activities available to us. And of course there are numerous examples of how well some of our past and present local sportspeople have done in their chosen sport.
January ■AT THE annual Greyhound Racing SA presentation dinner in Adelaide, two members of the Riverland club, president Leo O’Leary and outstanding breeder, owner, trainer Bruce Lellmann received major awards. O’Leary, a tireless worker not only for his own club but for the sport generally over many years, was named Volunteer of the Year and Lellmann, who just keeps on producing high class greyhounds received the Breeder of the Year trophy. A couple of sweet pills from GRSA that were neutralized by some very bitter ones as 2011 unfolded. ■THE Riverland Boxing and Fitness Club at Loxton
■BARMERA’S division one women’s bowlers broke a premiership drought that dated back to 2001/02 and at the same time, it could be said that they ‘got the monkey off their back’. On several occasions in previous years Barmera had shown early season form only to fail to cope with the
business end of proceedings. â– COBDOGLA junior Luke Saville finished runner-up at the Junior Australian Open. â–
JASON
Gordon
and
Ben Pobke won the 2011 Riverland Dinghy Derby.
■MURRAY Districts– Barrier produced one of its best performances for some time at the now shortened annual SA Cricket Association Country Carnival in Adelaide and were perhaps unfortunate to finish fifth. A poor first game cost the team dearly. Pinnaroo and Border’s Haydon Thorpe, and Berri pair Andrew Hume and Chris Hughes were selected in the Team of the Carnival.

â– COBDOGLA won its third division one tennis premiership in four years.
■BERRI’S Kieran Stone played in a Dreamtime football match.
■BERRI was the dominant swimming club in 2010-11 and cleaned up on trophy night. Riverland teams, including one at top level, returned to the SA Country Netball championships in Adelaide and again proved to be competitive amongst the leading zones. Sonja Modlinski was named in the competition’s top ten best players. The Riverland under 13’s won the title. ■WE celebrated the win by the SA Southern Suns in the Australian Women’s Hockey League with former Berri juniors Karri McMahon and Brooklyn Buchecker important members of the triumphant side. It was SA’s first title since 1995.
■LOXTON North’s Alexander Hill was chosen in the Australian Junior Rowing Squad.
May ■CHAMPION women’s lawn bowler Audrey Hefford was an inaugural inductee into the Bowls SA Hall of Fame. Perhaps as part of her mother’s celebrations, state squad member Kerry Treloar took out the SA women’s Champion of Champions singles title. ■THE winner of the 37th Cycling Tour of the Riverland was Mildura’s Michael Smith. Riverland club champion Lee Stevens was the fastest local rider in the event with Nathan Gregurke first to finish.
■LOXTON’S Krystal Petherick brought home gold medals from the Special Olympic Games in Greece. ■IT WAS a matter of 2010 history repeating itself when Riverland went down to the powerful Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara combination in Interleague football. The Riverland was right in the contest for most of the journey but towards the end, the size and body strength of KNT proved too much for the second season on end.

■ WITNESSING the Barmera United Soccer Club working enthusiastically to develop its new home at the former Riverland Greyhound Club’s modern clubrooms and surrounds is a good news story. However, a saga that has gone on for some time and reached a climax in 2012 resulted in arguably the biggest bad news story for the year as far as Riverland sport is concerned. The Riverland Greyhound Club is no more after it was unable to satisfy the demands of the sport’s Strategic Plan. And the man who handed over the keys to the complex to the Berri Barmera District Council and to the new tenants? Greyhound SA’s Volunteer of the Year in 2010 Leo O’Leary.

ISSUES surrounding the men’s round seven pennant bowls washouts continue to emerge and now appear to have resulted in significant resignations from the Riverland Men’s Bowling Association Board. Several articles were written on the situation in this column prior to Christmas and without going into great detail again, I did take issue with the board’s decision to treat the round seven rain interrupted games as cancellations when section 17.4 of the bylaws said in part that ‘if less than an aggregate two thirds of the ends are played, the match shall be postponed and continued at a date decided by the board, with play continuing from the score of the last end completed’. However I also put out there a thought that it may be preferable to legislate to leave the management and general running of the association entirely to an elected board or even an appointed manager where decisions such as this would become final. Obviously the view that the round seven matches should be resumed was shared by some clubs and on being referred to the Bowls SA Disputes Committee it was ruled that the total round should be completed. So who is to blame? ■ The rain: It was a real culprit and it came back in round eleven to create more problems. ■ The RMBA Program and Disputes Sub Committee: As it has explained, the board considered its decision to cancel the fixtures necessary because of the difficulty in fitting additional matches into an already full program. Disillusioned by developments two members of this group, John Thompson, who is a relatively new member on the board, and the longest serving member Pieter Raams, have signified their intention to resign. ■ Continued Page 21
