Snakes invade local homes By BRAD PERRY SNAKE numbers in and around Riverland homes are on the rise following last year's high mice numbers and river levels. Many people have spotted snakes on their properties in the past month, with reports of the reptile found in between the walls of a home and another in the roof. Loxton resident Justin Lane came across a baby brown snake on his lounge
room floor last week. The potentially deadly snake was making its way across Mr Lane’s tiled floor. “I just went from the study into the lounge room and I saw a little snake crawling its way across the tiles,” he said. “My initial reaction, because it was a little one, was that it was an oversized worm but then I saw the shape it was in.” n Continued Page 3
Nursing home accused of neglect By BRAD PERRY STAFF at the Renmark Paringa Nursing Home have been accused of neglect, including incidents of leaving residents unattended for hours and switching off request buzzers. It is understood more than five families have written to the Renmark Paringa Health Advisory Council and Member for Chaffey Tim Whetstone expressing concern over staffing levels and treat-
ment at the aged care facility. Shadow Minister for Health Martin Hamilton-Smith is in the Riverland today meeting with the families who have written the letters and the Renmark Paringa Health Advisory Council to discuss the accusations. “The residents and the families feel there is not enough staff,” Renmark Paringa HAC presiding member Karen Brown said. n Continued Page 4

Declaring snake season CAN we officially declare a new snake season? The Riverland is being invaded, possibly like never before, by the slithering coldblooded reptiles. It does seem a natural progression. First there was a mouse plague and as a result snakes are being enticed closer to homes for food. During last year’s high river, myself and several of my family members decided to head down to the Loxton riverfront for a closer look at the flooded areas. With adventure and exploring on our minds, we dragged ourselves through the waist deep waters, taking in the unusual experience. All was fine until I noticed something skimming across the water quite quickly. And as I yelled SNAAAKEEEE, there was a moment of sheer terror. We lunged for higher ground with some of us clinging to barbecue shelters, while others stood on, mostly under water, tables. We were obviously too close and unsure whether we should have stayed still in the water. We survived but only after the snake had vented its anger at us. Since then I have given myself an education lesson on how to react to snakes in all situations. With so many snakes around the region, keep a close eye out and now like me know how to respond.

Cutting response times By BRAD PERRY FOUR Riverland paramedics will now be able to safely rescue patients stuck on cliffs, down ravines or unstable ground following the completion of specialised vertical access skills training. Previously this type of rescue was being performed by a team in Adelaide but now patients in the Murraylands area will be treated by locals, significantly cutting response time. Renmark based Kieran Johnson and Megan Byrne, Loxton’s Stuart Young and Berri’s Wayne McCann recently took part in a three day training course to gain the relevant skills. Mr Johnson, who is an intensive care paramedic for the SA Ambulance Service based in Renmark, hopes this pilot program, called SAAS REMOTE (SA Ambulance Service Rural remote, Environ-
By BRAD PERRY THERE are concerns State Government funding cuts to law enforcement could potentially see Riverland crime figures rise in the coming years. Chaffey Tim Whetstone said local police deserve a “pat on the back” for their efforts to help curb crime in the region, he is calling on the State Government to provide more funds to the force to keep those numbers in check. “The lack of funding and lack of recruitment could see that trend upscaled,” he said. “Their resources are being cut back, numbers, police stations and I think that they are doing
a really good job with the declining support behind them. “Funding seems to be on the decline, particularly in country regions and country South Australia seems to be the scapegoat for putting more resources in the city and less resources in the country.” Mr Whetstone said centralising senior Riverland police to Murray Bridge is also of major concern.

to 1181 in 2009. The Mid Murray region also saw a drop in crime of 1258 to 881 over the four year period. Against the trend, the Southern Mallee local government area experienced a rise in offences from 144 in 2005 to 243 in 2009. The statistics include assualt offences, sexual offences, robbery and extortion, offences against property, good order, drugs and driving.
“We don't have the workforce in the region that we did have,” he said. In the Berri Barmera local government area the number of offences recorded by police dropped from 2056 in 2005 to 1698 in 2009. Offences dropped from 1485 in 2005 to 1102 in 2009 in the Loxton Waikerie local government area, while crimes reported in the Renmark Paringa area went from 1413 in 2005

Wasp invasion By BRAD PERRY PAPER nest wasps are invading riverfront locations across the Riverland, causing distress for users of the areas. Over the festive period, a large number of wasps building nests under a sheltered area on the Loxton riverfront flew close to patrons, with some concerned families moving from the spot. Local pest controller Ray Snodgrass said wasps are prone to attack around their nests as a defence action. “They are always on the go this time of year but it
just seems to be more on the go than the norm,” he said. “We get a lot of calls from the (Renmark Paringa) council to go and get rid of them when they are flying around by the river and by the shelters.” Mr Snodgrass said wasp nests are also frequent around homes and advised people to either call a pest controller or wait until the sun goes down to rid of the nest. “What we do advise is for people to leave them until after dark when they are settled if they want to go ahead with their own treatment,” he said.
“They can do it with a bit of surface spray when they are settled after dark.” Spiders are also another pest of concern, according to Mr Snodgrass. “We had noticed just prior to Christmas, there seemed to be a lot more people with a lot more spiders around due to the weather pattern we've had,” he said. ■ THREAT: Local pest controller Ray Snodgrass attempting to eradicate a paper wasp nest in Loxton. No money on premises Snake sightings on the rise ■ From Page 1
By BRAD PERRY AFTER a spate of break-ins in Renmark over the New Year period, local police are calling on businesses to remove cash from the premises overnight. Four businesses in Renmark were broken into between December 31 and January 3, prompting police to issue five points of advice to local traders in a bid to help minimise the risk of such incidents. Renmark Paringa Traders Association chairperson Dave Patty said he was concerned there are some businesses keeping cash on premises overnight. Included in the five points issued by police is warnings to keep minimal amounts of cash at premises and upgrading of security lighting. Mr Patty, who owns a local business, said he has looked into installing extra security cameras but costs become the issue. “I don't think it matters where you go you can always have more (security) but can you afford more?” Mr Patty said. “We all need to do more but I know personally I'm looking at more surveillance and it is big bucks. “The past few years have been pretty tight for business full stop in the Riverland. “It's always one of those things, can you afford to do it, can you afford not to do it?” Mr Patty said it was up to individual businesses to en sure the correct steps are

taken to minimise the possibility of break-ins. Three of the four break-
ins over the New Year period in Renmark saw entry gained by jemmying and forcing open the front door of the business.
Since finding the snake in his home Mr Lane has been very tentative when moving from room to room. “I was looking around the house before I did too much else in there, looking under beds, under couches and everything trying to find if there was another one in there,” he said. “I've talked to neighbours and they said they've seen a couple of other baby ones that have been around the place.” Local pest controller Ray Snodgrass said he has had reports of snakes in homes. “With that high river we've had I think it has pushed a few closer into the town area,” he said. According to Department of Environment and Natural Resources, carpet python sightings in the Riverland rose last year, more than doubling that of 2010. There were 23 carpet python sightings ranging from Ngaut Ngaut Conservation Park south of Swan Reach to Old Wentworth Road in Victoria, with the most recent sightings around the Payp to Loxton and Renmark to Murtho areas. DENR resources animal welfare manager Dr Deb Kelly said clearing away rubbish, keeping grass short and controlling rats and mice can help discourage snakes. The most common types of snake species found in South Australia includes eastern brown, red-bellied black, copperhead, western brown and tiger snake. Dr Kelly said brown snakes, in particular, like wood heaps, piles or rubbish, long grass and warm spots under corrugated iron roofs. She said snakes are a protected species and it is important to never try to catch or kill a snake. “If you do see a snake, leave it alone and watch where it goes,” Dr Kelly said.

Berri swimming project proceeds AN application to the Regional Devlopment Australia Fund to build a Berri Swimming Aquatic Complex as part of the sporting precinct has proceeded to the full application stage. Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland chief executive Brenton Lewis said the Riverland Future Food Program and the Berri swimming complex project have both made application stage. “These projects have a strong level of community support and will have a positive long-term impact on our region and neighbouring regions and are ready to proceed,” he said. Eligible applications will be assessed by an Independent Advisory Panel and funded projects will be announced midyear.

By BRAD PERRY PLANS to turn a former petrol station in the main street of Berri into a much needed temporary motorhome and caravan parking area have been thwarted. The Berri Barmera Council proposed to use the vacant site as a parking area for visitors but petrol giant BP, which owns the property, has denied the request because fuel tanks still remain buried at the location. Described as a prime piece of land, Berri Barmera Council chief executive officer David Beaton called on BP to act now and remove the potential contamination element. “If they are not wanting to sell it as a going concern and they don’t want the site to be a service station in the future, they need to remove the tanks,” he said. “It’s a prominent site, it’s right in the middle of the town and it’s a prime
piece of real estate. “Just having it look like this, it’s a boarded up area and it’s not a great advertisement for the town or the Riverland.” Berri Barmera Mayor Peter Hunt agreed that something must be done with the former BP petrol station site. “While there is tanks there they can’t use it for anything else unless I would imagine another fuel company takes it over,” he said. Council will continue to liaise with the petrol giant in hope the contamination factor is addressed and the land rezoned. “We’ve got a problem with parking, so if we could have been able to use that for parking we would have made the area look better because we would have looked after it and also it would have given people more places to park to shop in Berri and use the riverfront as well,” Mr Beaton said.

Outside interest in local grapes By BRAD PERRY WINERIES from outside the Riverland have shown interest in purchasing local grapes in what is being described as a small step towards the industry returning to a higher level of sustainability. McLaren Vale and Padthaway wineries are seeking small tonnages of gordo, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and chardonnay from the region. Riverland Winegrape Growers Association executive officer Chris Byrne said the requests are the first indication that Riverland winegrapes are in demand. “It’s early days yet and we were a little surprised that both these regions came to us last week expressing small quantities of Riverland fruit,” he said. “That means they are concerned about supply and that’s a positive as far as we are concerned, albeit, it will be at a price. “Obviously they want the freight, (so) they are going to have to freight it
to those external regions and pay the growers the fair price.” Mr Byrne said the interest from outside wineries is another positive step as the local industry gets closer to the return of a higher level of sustainability and prosperity. “It is certainly not going to turn the industry around,” he said. “The industry has got a lot of rationalising to do as yet but certainly this region has led the way. “We’ve done a lot of the structural adjustment that needs to be done.” With the winegrape harvest around the corner, Mr Byrne said growers are hoping not to be caught out by disease. “There is a bit of nervousness around about possible late seasons pests and disease such as what we had last year,” he said. With winegrape prices not yet released, Mr Byrne said there is “constant frustration” for growers not knowing what returns will be like.
Producer’s back centre By BRAD PERRY A REPORT into the development of a primary producers business centre in the region has revealed a high level of support for the proposal from Riverland and Mallee growers. The concept to build a centre is gaining momentum with a steering committee to look into funding for a business case in the coming weeks. Riverland Winegrape Growers Association executive officer Chris Byrne said there is growing support behind the venture after a Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland assisted report, completed throughout November and December, showed much interest. “There seems to be widespread support,” Mr Byrne said. “It’s at the stage where the grower groups have got to consider whether they are going to support the concept or not. “We need to raise some funds
to enable us to progress to the next stage.” The idea of a business centre was raised a number of years ago through the Riverland Horticulture Reference Forum and has since pushed forward. “We tried in 2008 to have what we called a coalition of Riverland groups but that floundered just because the group’s weren’t well enough organised,” Mr Byrne said. “We think it (primary producers business centre) would just create much better service potential for all of the groups, not just the winegrape growers but in those areas where we have a common issue like water, spray drift or salinity zoning.” It is understood the cost of preparing a business case could be up to $40,000 and will look into the financial assessment of the operation, what is involved and the level of support needed. A location for the centre will also be part of the business case.

“There have been some issues with residents in their care processes, people have been left too
long, buzzers being turned off or disconnected and a few issues that we really need to have a look at and deal with. “Some of the residents are elderly and bed ridden and if they can’t get out of bed or if they are not seen to in a timely fashion, it could have some detrimental affects on their health.” Ms Brown said if the alleged problems are not fixed by Country Health SA, the HAC will go to higher authority or hold a public meeting. “It’s very much a concern for us because we are here to advocate for the community and if the community aren’t happy and they are thinking their services are not up to standard, then we have to take that to the highest level you can go,” she said. Mr Whetstone said there have been some “alarming accusations”
against the nursing home. “It’s totally unacceptable that these elderly people can be almost abandoned in the aged care facility and it’s something that I won’t put up with on behalf of their families,” he said. “Their families are writing these letters absolutely beside themselves that they (aged care home residents) can be left for hours unattended, buzzers switched off. “It is not as though they are young, untroubled by their health, they are in that facility for a reason. “It is a matter of meeting with them and substantiating what we’re hearing to see what is going on and addressing the concern with the hospital and the facility.” In a statement to the Riverland Weekly, Riverland Health Service director Tom Neilson said Country Health SA
has not received any allegations of mistreatment towards residents at the Renmark Paringa Nursing Home. “Providing high quality care for residents and patients is the number one priority and any concerns from residents or their families are taken very seriously,” he said. “Staffing levels within the Renmark Paringa Health Service meet the needs of the residents and patients requiring care within this facility, which includes the nursing home. “Staffing is allocated according to residents’ dependencies and in compliance with Commonwealth Government standards. “The needs of each resident vary and the care plan and staffing for each resident reflects this. “Renmark Paringa Nursing Home is an independently accredited
aged care facility by the Commonwealth Government and satisfies all 44 standards.” During Minister Hamilton-Smith’s visit today, he will also tour the Riverland Regional Hospital development in Berri.

■ CROWDS: Spectators and competitors (inset) have turned out in large numbers to the Australian Speed and Marathon National Ski Championships at Lake Bonney. The event has been seen as great publicity for Barmera and for the wider Riverland community. Photos: CALLUM TRIFONOFF By CALLUM TRIFONOFF HOSTING the Australian Speed and Marathon National Ski Championships this week is set to be a major dose of retail therapy for Barmera shops. Local businesses have reported solid sales since the event began on Monday. Barmera Hotel manager Brett Eckermann has seen increased trade from tourists travelling to the region for the championships and believes the event will
only benefit the local community by injecting much needed funds into the economy. “We've definitely been busier through the week,” Mr Eckermann said. “I've heard many comments, particularly those from interstate and they're surprised we don't have similar events like this here more often. “This is not just a benefit to us but to the Barmera community in general and to the wider region.”
With Lake Bonney currently in good condition, Mr Eckermann is not surprised the town was chosen to host the national skiing event. “The lake is absolutely ideal for the race set-up,” he said. “You've got a natural amphitheatre in the grassed area. “You've got a nice big lake.” Event organiser Loretta Scott said the local and out-of-town interest in the championships has been pleasing. “It's been a really good re-
sponse,” Ms Scott said. “We've had roughly 1000 people come through. “Locals have definitely been curious about all the noise and what's going on and have been coming to have a look.” Ms Scott said patrons and competitors have been on their best behaviour so far. “It's a family sport and competitors have to have zero alcohol,” she said. “As far as we're concerned, there haven't been any issues in that area.”
Biosecurity to investigate spray drift damage By BRAD PERRY BIOSECURITY SA is investigating damage to vineyards in the region from spray drift after a number of complaints were received. A newly introduced code of practice has been put in place for summer weed control in an attempt to prevent spray drift damage. A Biosecurity SA spokesperson said a small number of reports have been received. “Biosecurity SA’s Rural Chemicals Operations section has received a small number of reports of spray drift in the Loxton area and is currently investigating, in conjunction with local stakeholders,” they said.
“It is possible that there has been some slight, generalised damage from phenoxy herbicide drift (e.g. 2,4-D) from an as yet unidentified source. “This is the type of situation that the new code of practice will help to prevent in future. “Rural Chemicals Operations has received a report of some grapevine damage that is consistent with herbicide drift but the symptoms are not typical of phenoxy herbicide damage.” Biosecurity SA rural chemicals operations manager Michael McManus urged broad acre famers in and around grape growing regions to be mindful of spray drift. “It is critical to minimise
It is possible that there has been some slight, generalised damage from phenoxy herbicide drift.
the risk of off-target damage to grapevines and other susceptible plants from droplet and vapour drift of herbicides,” Mr McManus said. “One of the key points is to get spray timing right and spray during the day wherever possible and to not spray from one and a
half hours before sunset until one and a half hours after sunrise. “Local surface temperature inversions, which greatly increase the risk of damage from spray drift, frequently form in the evening and strengthen overnight, so it is best to avoid spraying during this period. “Consider your neighbours and their agricultural activities and also susceptible crops that may be some distance away. “While harvest may be over for some producers, it may be several weeks or months before other horticultural or viticultural harvests are due.” Farmers using herbicides such as 2,4-D, MCPA and triclopyr are urged to exercise extreme care.

A REVIEW into the future of the Riverland Farmers' Market will be postponed following positive financial income over the past six months. Early last year a review of the market's future seemed likely with profit low but a boost in stall numbers and patronage has seen the event grow. Food Riverland Inc chairperson Dave Benda said more volunteers have also come forward to help. “Things are running along smoothly and we've had our nose in front for six successive months now which has been just excellent from everybody's point of view,” he said. “At the moment stallholder wise, it is holding it's own which is good. “It does seem to be that there is a bit of a feeling of more confidence with water.” At the regular market meeting next week, a new concept to make the market even more community friendly will be tabled. “The next thing that we are starting to talk about is trying to launch the notion of Friends of the Market, which many markets have already launched successfully,” Mr Benda said. “Essentially that is to get members of the public to join the market and get some sort of discount or the likes.” Mr Benda said discussions with organisers of a market recently opened in Murray Bridge have revealed it has had up to 40 people join a friends of the market set-up.

THE Riverland's own sausage king could become a national champion when he heads to Melbourne next month. Daryl Muller, who runs Muller's Meat Store in Monash, will take part in the Australian Meat Industry Council National Sausage King Competition on February 4 after placing first in two categories at the state titles in September. Mr Muller will compete against 29 other butchers from around Australia with his lamb curry and cheese and bacon sausages. It is not the first time he
has attended the national competition having previously attended in 2009, finishing third with his lamb curry sausage entry. He is hopeful of a high place at the competition and said taking part is a “feather in the cap for his reputation. “A small country butcher going is quite an achievement I think, he said. Mr Muller describes his lamb curry and cheese and bacon sausages as unique and urged locals to give them a try. ■KING: Mullers Meats will be competing at the national sausage king competition.
Petticoat Lane assists aged care By CALLUM TRIFONOFF ST Catherine’s aged care facility in Berri has been able to purchase new weight scales and body slings thanks to last year’s Petticoat Lane event. The annual event has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars over more than 45 years. St Catherine's site manager Ross Carter said the fundraiser has been much appreciated by the aged care home. “Over the years, they've supported us and helped us purchase a lot of equipment for our residents, Mr Carter said. “If they didn't do it, we'd have to get the money from somewhere else which would not be easy. Petticoat Lane president

Photo: CALLUM TRIFONOFF Shirley Ingerson said the event is always well supported by the community. “We're all going to be here one day and by Petticoat Lane raising as much money as possible it really helps,
Mrs Ingerson said. Petticoat Lane members are already looking forward to another successful event later in the year and hope to get helpers of all ages on board.

When Paringa man Grant Schwartzkopff began photography as a hobby two years ago, he never thought looking down a lens would change his perspective on life. By BRAD PERRY THERE was a crack of lightning not far from his feet and then the heavens opened up. Despite Paringa photographer Grant Schwartzkopff becoming soaking wet after being drenched by rain, he was happy. It was Christmas Eve when Grant noticed lightning and thunder developing on the horizon and instead of sitting back and watching from the comfort of his home, he wanted a closer look. For the budding photographer, the experience turned out to be more than memorable. “I was sitting at home and I looked out the window and way over at Yamba I could see a bit of lightning,” Grant said. “So I hopped in the car and drove out past Yamba towards Mildura and it got further and further away from me. “I took a couple of shots out there but they were too far away, so I thought I must have missed it.” However, Grant was given an early Christmas present when the storm turned around and quickly began to head towards the Riverland. “I got halfway between Yamba and Paringa and all of sudden the lightning was all around me,” he said. “I just pulled the car over and set up alongside of the highway and snapped away merrily. “It was all around me, it was unbelievable. “The next minute I had a couple of whacks in front of me and I got a photo of two bolts. “It seemed like they hit the road directly in front of me and that's when I thought I needed to get back in the car. “When I got home and had a look
at the photos I got a few good shots, so it was worth it.” The unique storm chase by Grant is just one of the highlights he has had since discovering a love for photography two years ago. Grant, who has lived in the Riverland all his life, is currently a Student Services Officer at Renmark Primary School and it is through his education connection which inspired him to take up the hobby. “One of the school teachers put me onto it two years ago,” Grant said. “I just love the fact you can capture that split second that you will never see again.” Grant's passion for local sport has seen several of his photos published in the Riverland Weekly and local media, while some of his more creative and ve apscenic photos have ublicapeared in city publications. “That was a real buzz,” he said. ograWhile photograively phy is still relatively knew to Grant, he is hoping to continuee to napgrow his love for snapable ping that remarkable shot. gest “That's the biggest thing I've found is lly that I'm really, really wn critical of my own photos,” he said. “There is so o, much more to do, nso I will keep learning as I go and seee where I end up.” His photoss speak for themselves.
Champion skiers honBy CALLUM TRIFONOFF A COMMEMORATIVE wall in honour of late Riverland skier Sue Fieldhouse was unveiled at a ceremony in Barmera on the weekend. The ceremony which was
oured on the shores of Lake Bonney
conducted at Lake Bonney also recognised other local ski racing legends with Fieldhouse, Sue Lipplegoes and Peggy and Bill Flewellyn acknowledged on plaques. Organising committee member Rachel Hampshire

said it was important the achievements of the skiers were recognised. “Sue (Fieldhouse) herself had achieved a world record in slalom,” Mrs Hampshire said. “I just wanted to have a way of recognising the people's achievements and publicising it to the wider community.” The commemorative wall and plaques signalled the opening of the Barmera boat ramp before the National ski championships at Lake Bonney. “It was just a great opportunity and great timing to be able to put these things in place,” Mrs Hampshire said.
“It's great for their families to see their efforts acknowledge. “It's lovely for grandchildren and fellow family members.” With a crowd of around 60 people attending the ceremony on Saturday, Mrs Hampshire expressed her gratitude to the Riverland community. “They really were behind these four people and supported them in their endeavours to reach overseas competition,” she said. “We had a lot more people attend (the ceremony) than what we expected, despite the very rugged and blustery conditions.”

Organiser Jim Wallace said the support for the car and bike run was phenomenal. “It was just fantastic,” Mr Wallace said. “We started the run off, we went through a sandstorm, we got absolutely saturated and everyone was still in good spirits. “I was very happy that people who participated enjoyed it and that we could raise the money.” After the event’s initial success, Mr Wallace said it could become an annual fixture with money raised for a local cause.
AROUND $7000 was raised at the weekend’s Riverland Car and Bike Poker Run to go towards the New Zealand Pike River Mine recovery. The event, titled Mal’s Ride, was organised by Barmera’s Wallace family, who are raising funds to help retrieve the body of their nephew Malcolm Campbell from the mine. THE Loveday Internment Camp will establish its own website thanks to monetary donations from a local community group. A website solely dedicated to the camp will help attract more tourists to the region, according to Loveday Internment Camp Museum Committee chairperson Rosemary Gower. Up to $500 was recently donated to the Loveday Internment Camp Museum Committee by the Korea & South East Asia Forces Association of South Australia Riverland sub-branch. Mrs Gower has been delighted with the way the Riverland has warmed to the
idea of further promotion of the camp. “We’re also looking at having our own website and redoing the brochures that we’ve got,” she said. In a bid to spread the word about the internment camp to the younger generation, Mrs Gower will also be visiting schools this year. “I’ve had meetings with the education department and they’re going to bring that in as part of their history curriculum,” she said. “I’ll be going to schools and talking to the children about the Loveday Internment Camp and the history of the area. “I’ve been collecting material for over 25 years, just information on the camp and artefacts.”
We’ve obsessed over every detail. Now everything is about to fall into place.

THE Department for Water has been unable to confirm speculation that the Riverland will receive significantly higher River Murray flows in the coming months. As yabby numbers dwindle following the high river, manager for water resource and environmental operations Richard Brown could not predict any large amounts of flows heading to the region in the near future. “The flows to South Australia at the moment are round about 16,500 megalitres per day,” Mr Brown said. Local yabby enthusiast John Cockshell said this time last year there was an abundance of yabbies
wakeboarders, including Renmark’s Ryleigh Pfitzner, took part in the WakeUp vs the YHK event. Waikerie benefited from the influx of tourists, with many travelling through the town to Hogwash Bend for the event.

Putt-putt golf and scrumptious food SINCE opening its doors three years ago, Bella Lavender Estate has earned a reputation for fine food and fantastic hospitality. With many delicious lunch menu items and lavender products on sale at the farm in Winkie, locals and tourists alike have been attracted to the property. In addition to the family friendly atmosphere, Bella Lavender Estate also recently built its own putt-putt golf course, providing extra entertainment for any age. Owners Mario and Lucy Centofanti began their venture with the Riverland’s only lavender farm in late 2008 and have since continued to provide a unique experience for those who visit. “It’s improved through tourism a great deal, especially in the last year or so, Mario said. “We get great publicity from the locals who promote Bella Lavender out of the region. “I feel we’re really helping the Riverland on the tourist side and we’re really helping the Riverland get back on its feet again.
â– SHOT: Bella Lavender owner Mario Centofanti has a round of golf on his putt-putt course, while (inset) the cafe is situated with the surrounding lavender farm.
Mario said a relaxing experience at the lavender farm is just a short drive away from major local towns. “Take a little drive and sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, he said. “The view here is also nice. One part about owning and running Bella Lavender Estate that Mario and Lucy really enjoy is the interaction with customers. “You can sit down and talk and talk with everyone, he said. “I find it very relaxing to work here, meeting and greeting and making coffees for people. Among the popular items Bella Lavender Estate is known for is its homemade cakes, jewellery, handcreams and lavender soaps. The addition of a putt-putt golf course has been popular, with many families taking advantage of the attraction during school holidays. Mario said the lavender farm is also a great place to host functions or come for light lunches. “For the month of January be sure to come and see our lavender oil distillation demonstration, Lucy added. For bookings, contact Mario and Lucy at Bella Lavender Estate on 8583 1184.

Huge haul at fishing comp THE inaugural Blanchetwon Fishing Competition produced some stunning catches on the weekend. Anglers from across the state ventured to Blanchetown for the event and many did not leave empty handed. The main prize went to a group of Barossa Valley fishermen, who ventured up the river and found success. Tanunda’s Nick Wood landed the biggest carp at the two day competition. Nick snared a couple of large fish with his eventual winning entry measuring 76.5 centimetres and weighing in at 6.2 kilograms. The fishing competition was also offering prizes for the biggest callop and redfin but it was the carp division which organisers hoped would produce the biggest catch. Nick’s winning entry fell just short of the one metre mark but it was still an impressive fish and a buzz for the Barossa boy as he hauled it in. “It’s the first time I’ve won anything in a fishing competition and it was great fun,” Nick said. “About 10 of us from the Barossa were up at Blanchetown for the weekend and we thought we’d give it a go. “We basically spent the whole weekend having a crack, we had lines in the water all the time and dragged this one (the winner) in from the bank using a yabby tail for bait.” Organisers of the competition were rapt with the response to the first-ever event with family participation the most pleasing p part for competition co-ordinator Trevor Hailstone. “We had families from places as far away as Brinkworth, Broken Hill and plenty from the Barossa, Gawler and Adelaide,” he said. With support from local businesses in providing prizes for all categories, Trevor said the competition promised to be bigger and better next year . Gawler’s Sharajni Cotton won the junior carp category with a 1.32 kilogram haul and Zavier Goodrich, of Camden-Park, won the sub-junior carp category with a 3.53 kilogram fish. Blanchetown’s Barry Miller won the senior callop catch at 1.3 kilograms, while Broken Hill’s Michael Powell won the junior category and local Danny Dixon won the redfin senior catch.

RIVERLAND band McKenzie, formerly known as Shattered Glass, has come along in leaps and bounds with its single Exposed featuring on an American punk compilation. What began in 2008 as five school friends playing cover songs under the name Shattered Glass, has continued to grow. During December, the band’s hit single Exposed received air time on Triple J Unearthed and featured in the top end of Australian punk charts. The most recent success for the band is its contribution to a punk compilation album. The album Punk Kills Vol. 19 was released widely around America. McKenzie drummer/lead vocalist Nick Beech said the band is overwhelmed with its sudden rise in worldwide popularity. “We always dreamt of getting it (worldwide exposure) but we always knew
the reality was a lot of hard work and luck,” Nick said. “We never thought it would happen this quickly.” The band, made up of lead guitarist Justin Broughton, rhythm guitarist Jordan Beech and bassist Sam Harrington, is still coming to terms with the new found fame.
We always dreamt of getting it...but we never thought it would happen this quickly.
“We put our song on Triple J and about a month later we got a call from a record company in America,” Nick said. “They said they would put us on a worldwide compilation CD with about 15 other bands. “It gets sold in Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard

and 25 college radio stations in America. “It’s wicked getting our foot in an overseas market. “We rang each other up and everyone came over, we were pretty happy.” The band will continue to promote itself both in Australia and worldwide. “We're looking to promote ourselves on the internet, we've got a few recording sessions coming up,” Nick said. “We've got a big release of our song in Warradale in Adelaide, where we're doing a film clip as well. “We'd like to plan a tour of Australia for the end of next year.” Since the band’s inception, members of McKenzie have formed a close bond. “As well as us four being awesome mates who can tell each other anything, just when you're up on stage, you get such and adrenaline rush,” he said. “You're playing the music for them and when they (the fans) are loving it, it's such a good feeling.
Tough garden grass THE genera Lomandra is in the same family as the Australian grass trees (Xanthorrhoeaceae) but without the tree elements. The grass trees form tufts or tussocks and most have a long flat blade for a leaf. All grass tree species support flowers on spikes and many are scented, some pleasantly, some not so pleasantly. More and more grass trees are coming into cultivation and look fantastic in large groups. The best trait of the plant for the gardener is that they almost all tolerate such a wide range of conditions from sandy soils to clay, wet to very dry, frost and shade to full sun. If the clumps ever look untidy, the whole plant can be cut off at ground level or burnt and then new fresh growth will sprout forth. Lomandra longifolia, with its fairly broad leaf, seems to take whatever you want to dish up. Growing to one metre high, the grass tree will progressively grow wider without being too aggressive. Its mildly scented flowers will waft about and it looks good in straight lines in formal settings,
alongside ponds or just here and there in less formal gardens. From seed the species is quite variable but many named varieties are on the market and are worth checking out as their leaf width, flower, scent and hardiness all vary. Lomandra confertifolia spp. rubiginosa or seascape is a very fine weeping Lomandra with blue, green leaves and only grows to 50 centimetres. It simply looks like a graceful grass without the bad habits of a large build-up of dead material like most grasses. Lomandra effusa is our very own local mat rush. It forms a low clump up to 50 centimetres but usually less. The leaves are incredibly tough, in fact, one common name is cocky’s bootlace. To find them can be difficult and smelling them is usually a lot easier.
The perfume is exquisite and will let you know it’s in flower from tens of metres away. While it is not often grown, the grass is worthwhile using in gardens for the fragrance alone. The virtues of Lomandra are becoming well recognised and can often be seen in commercial and council plantings doing it tough under extreme conditions. So for a cooling, weeping, low maintenance, scented grassy effect, consider Lomandras for anywhere from a damp shade house to the conditions of our local mallee.

SPEEDBOAT SPECTACULAR
Power factor
A LIST of top performing speedsters from across the nation will be storming down the River Murray on January 28 and 29. The 2012 Speedboat Spectacular has a strong mix of boats competing in classes from blown alcohol displacements to the six litre injected on the Berri riverfront. Riverlanders can expect action packed entertainment on the water this year, according to Speedboat Spectacular co-organiser Brian Jeffery. “We’ve got 25/550 boats and junior boats as well and the 5.2 litre and 4.2 litre King of the River non qualifiers” Mr Jeffery said. “We should have somewhere between 10 to a dozen B.A.D. boats and a good field of six litre injectors.” After accidents in the 2010 spectacular, safety efforts on boats have been improved.
“The biggest change in blown alcohol displacement boats is the added safety cell which helps drivers in case of an accident,” Mr Jeffery said. “Most of the cell boats have on board air in case they are knocked out on impact or up side down under water. “A good percentage of six litre injected boats also have cells on board but is not mandatory at this stage but sometime in the near future I think it will be. “The cell benefits the driver on high impact because he is not out in the wind, as one could say. “The biggest fear any driver has is losing an ear off a propeller, which causes a massive vibration and generally flips the boat over. “These propellers run between 9500 to 12500 revs per minute.” After crowds lined the River Murray for last year’s event, Mr Jef-

the Sunday, along with racing for juniors. Mr Jeffery said there is also a number of extra displays on the water planned, with racers to demonstrate their talents. There is fantastic public viewing areas and entertainment throughout the day for children. If you are looking for the best seat in the house, a fenced off and ticketed admission area has been set-up to maximise views as speedboats fly past. Catering by local schools and sporting bodies offers a number of food options. There will also be alcohol on offer. With the event being the last weekend before school returns, Mr Jeffery is hoping to see a number of junior thrill-seekers and families at the Speedboat Spectacular. “It is a bonus that the event is

fery is hoping for another big turn out this year. “If it’s not too hot, not too cold, generally we get good crowds,” he said. There are a number of trophies up for grabs and certainly some bragging rights on the line at this year’s Speedboat Spectacular. Over two full days of racing, drivers will be competing for the Berri Resort King of the River for inboards and outboards. There will also be the running of the Tony Patti Memorial race and in memory of well-respected Berri boat-racer, the late Les Schrapel, there will be the running of the Les Schrapel Memorial race for unlimited boats. “Anyone who likes competition should come,” Mr Jeffery said. Both days of the event will offer plenty of action with 15 races on the Saturday and 22 races on

Foundation’s big year By CALLUM TRIFONOFF AFTER going through a rebuilding stage in 2010, the local Make-A-Wish Foundation granted three wishes last year. Long-serving president Dallas Zeliff said a number of volunteers provided service to help grant wishes, with 11 committee members currently on board. “I thought 2011 might have been a little quieter than
past years but we’ve ended up doing three wish grants, he said. “We had a bad year in 2010 when we lost a lot of people off our committee and we really had to spend all of last year rebuilding. “We granted a wish for one little girl in Loxton who got an above ground swimming pool, we did a wish for a girl in Renmark who got a trip to the Gold Coast and we’ve done
a wish for a girl in Loxton, who also had a trip to the Gold Coast. Mr Zeliff has been involved with Make-A-Wish for the past 13 years and said he enjoys helping others. “There are about a dozen who aren’t on the committee but make themselves available for any functions, he said. “I’ve still got the enthusiasm, I’ve still got the passion myself to help out.
Students hit a high note with musical LAST month students from the Riverland Christian School performed their annual end of year musical at the Chaffey Theatre. This year it was entitled Just Another River and the story explored themes of confidence, faith, fear and trust, while retelling the Biblical account of Moses preparing his people to cross the Jordan River to enter the promised land of Canaan. The hour long performance went off impressively, showcasing a wide range of talent. The whole school was involved in the show which included acting, singing, and dancing. The well rehearsed performance was very well received. Audience members were impressed at the high standard of performance, which included choreography from some of the older students. The evening concluded with a special surprise video tribute for R/1 teacher Melis-

WITH GRAHAM CHARLTON
Waikerie Gliding Club revives favourite annual event ■THERE has been a fair amount of activity around the Waikerie Gliding Club in recent weeks, including the revival of a favourite annual event from yesteryear. Firstly, the usual January coaching courses attracted some forty visitors from around Australia including 18 pilots, coaches and support staff. Queensland, Victoria, NSW and SA were represented in sessions that are designed to enhance the skills of people that have already undertaken solo and cross country flights. Also, with the club not hosting the State Championships as it has done in the past few years, it was decided to revive the once popular Orange Week competition. This event was phased out some 15 years ago but up until then had been a reasonably big occasion on the club’s program during the September/October period. The 2012 event was low key to get things started but it seems Orange Week is back each January and it will be conducted in conjunction with any state titles that are contested at the venue from time to time. Six locals, two entries from overseas and another from interstate took part in this year’s competition but the field is expected to grow in future. The 2012 winner was local Craig Vinall.
Maywald dominates shoot ■ROBERT Maywald, with an overall score of 142/150, took High Gun honours at last Sunday’s shoot at the Barmera Gun Club. Included in his performance were victories in the A Grade 50 Target Double Barrel competition with a score of 50/50 and the 25 Target Point Score with 71/75. Also in the 50 Target event Eric Schmaal finished ahead of Trevor Shaddock in AA Grade 49/50 to 48/50, Ray Pash won B Grade with 48/50 and Jim Vithoulkas C Grade with 42/50. Robbie Robertson, with 70/75, finished runner-up to Maywald in the 25 Target Point Score, Bruce Morris 69/75 won B Grade and Vithoulkas 69/75 claimed C Grade honours. In event three, a 25 Target Skeet, Harvey Nunn with 23/25 won the A Grade from Robertson 20/25, Shaddock won B Grade with 24/25 and Pash was victorious in the C Grade with 22/25.
Legend of the Mallee ■I WAS privileged to be invited to a luncheon at the Karoonda Football Club last Sunday where the family of Mallee legend Bill Murdoch celebrated his 80th birthday. I can genuinely apply the description of legend in Bill’s case as in 2008, he was named the SA Country Football Legend and noted football historian John Gascoyne also included him in his top 10 Mail Medal winners in a Bush Legends column at one stage. Bill was also an outstanding cricketer across club, association and zone competitions but on Sunday, I was left in no doubt that his impact on life in his community and far beyond has extended considerably from his deeds on the sporting field. At the conclusion of the family dinner, the clubrooms filled to capacity at an open house as people from Karoonda and surrounding districts were joined by others who had travelled long distances to acknowledge and congratulate their local legend. But sport was never far away at the gathering and amongst the family members was Bill’s son
Roger, a no nonsense left footer who played 100 senior games for Norwood from 1984 to 1992 and now lives in the South East. Talking to Bill, his wife Irene and to Roger, I became aware that the Murdoch name in football is still on an exciting journey. Roger has two sons, Jordan and Brodie, who after playing the game at Port MacDonnell, were recruited to Glenelg in the SANFL.
premiership team, and for two matches, the league side, as well as representing SA at the Under 18 National championships. But it does not end there. Brodie, 17, was recently one of 30 selected for a 12 months scholarship in the AFL-AIS Academy under a commitment made by the Australian Sports Commission to enhance the sporting opportunities for our best young athletes.
Bill was also an outstanding cricketer across club, association and zone competitions. The eldest Jordan, 19, has just been drafted at pick 48 by Geelong. Also a left footer, Jordan is 190 centimetres in height and weighs 80 kilograms and is described as a speedy medium forward with neat disposal and excellent agility. He was the quickest player tested at the AFL’s 2011 Draft Combine. He has rapidly played through the Glenelg under 18s, reserves, where he was a member of the
He has already been to Canberra for a week long training camp and he will be off to Melbourne shortly for another before spending a week with an AFL club. Brodie has been told this will be alongside his brother at Geelong. In addition the scholarship holders will tour Europe, including visits to Italy and France, before playing two exhibition games in London. A strong marking, lead-
up forward, Brodie is 188 centimetres and 83 kilograms and in one game at the goal front for Glenelg Under 18s in 2011, he kicked 11 goals after grabbing 15 marks amongst 23 possessions. Remaining in his home state for the time being, Brodie is looking to break into Glenelg’s senior ranks this coming season. And yes, he is yet another left footer. Readers may recall that some time ago I reflected that it was Bill Murdoch who predicted a fine future for a young Wynarka Primary School lad named Tyson Edwards. At one stage on Sunday I asked him his thoughts on what may be ahead in the game for his two grandsons. But he was too wise to go down that path and put pressure on the youngsters, although the pride in Bill’s eyes gave me my answer. Away from sport for a moment, Roger has a younger daughter, 14-year-old Madeline, who has just scored top honours for her singing. Unanimously the Murdoch clan assured me that Bill can take absolutely no credit for that.
Medical students to get a taste of local sport â– LAST Monday morning I attended a casual open forum at the Flinders University Rural Clinical School in Renmark to speak briefly to a group of medical students who will be living, studying and working in the Riverland during 2012. My task was to inform them of the sport that was available to them in the Riverland, either as competitor, spectator, follower or even official or volunteer. Fellow presenters covered other subjects but amongst them was Tony Sharley who would have advised them of the many wonderful destinations our
region has on offer to both locals and visitors. It is at times like this that you realise how fortunate we are to live in a region like the Riverland. Talking sport alone, the variety of activities that we have available to us and the magnificent conditions and facilities that are provided, not only at a regional level but in individual towns, must make us one of the most unique rural areas in the nation. We also took the opportunity to inform our new medical arrivals that for people like Sophie Edington, Grant Schubert, Hayden Stoeckel, Mark Ricciuto and Sam Fisher, this is where it all started.
The medical students, who are Rachel Dawson, Kat South (Waikerie Medical Centre), Wendy Baker, Julie Fraser (Loxton), Lucy Martin, Jen Watt (Barmera), Bill Hunt, Sarah Oldfield (Berri) and Kate Pensa (Renmark), have almost all expressed interest in a sport of some kind including hockey, softball, cycling and some gymnasium work. I gathered, in several instances, local recruiting officers had already been active and I wondered whether it was only a coincidence that one young lady, who is living in Waikerie, was dressed in black and white. We welcome the medical students to the Riverland as valued members of our community and simply say enjoy all that we have to offer.
■STAR: New medical sutdents have been reminded about the Riverland’s true legends of sport such as Waikerie born football champion Mark Ricciuto.

Mr Bucon said if a five-aside competition was given the green light, games would be played on smaller pitches. Meanwhile, Mr Bucon confirmed it is unlikely night matches will return to the
RSA next season. However, he said playing under lights is an issue that will be discussed in the future. “If Berri were to say we would be interested in hosting night games, when it’s their turn to host a game, we
would look at putting it in the program, he said. “At this stage, our aim is to continue with the Sunday afternoon games. “Ideally, it’d be nice to have some night games or twilight games but we won’t force that upon any clubs.
Local swimmers have strong representation at country champs By CALLUM TRIFONOFF THE Riverland will have a strong showing at today’s South Australia Country Swimming Championships, with several future stars on display. The championships will see around 50 swimmers from Riverland clubs compete against some of the state’s best in the pool. Riverland Swimming Association president Jenni Trewren is hopeful
local swimmers will come home satisfied with performances. “We will definitely have some medalists, there’s no doubt about that, she said. Trewren expects solid showings from Berri swimmers Brock Verrall (freestyle and butterfly), Timothy Trewren (backstroke) and Jake Miller (breaststroke) in boys’ events, while Emily Millar (breaststroke
and backstroke), Nikki Harwood (backstroke) and Sarah Trewren (freestyle) will be the girls’ strong representatives. From Renmark, Shay Hawkins (butterfly), Codey Lambert (freestyle), Rhys Jennings (breaststroke), Clint Bambrick and Lauren Anderson (butterfly) are expected to swim well. Loxton’s Bronte Phillips is also predicted to have a good day in the pool during breaststroke competitions.

The number of entries into the Waikerie Gliding Club’s Orange Week.
Looking back at...
Stars of the water ■ WITH the Australian Speed and Marathon Ski Racing Championships currently being conducted at Lake Bonney and later this month, the Berri Speedboat Spectacular to return to the Berri riverfront, it is an appropriate time to look back 30 years to 1981 at these water sports that were thrilling big crowds way back then.
A Speedboat Extravaganza was held at Renmark attracting 1500 spectators.
In March that year, the first ever Riverland Barefoot Skiing Championships were
held at Loxton. Local skiers had joined the SA Barefoot Ski Club and over a half of the 20 or so entries were locals new to the sport.
Amongst the Loxton skiers to feature in results were Jim Draper and Stephen Moyle in Junior Novice, Clint Frankel in Novice Men, Peter Barry and Tony Moyle. The event also attracted a state champion of five consecutive years and the reigning world record holder for barefoot jumping, Adelaide’s Allan Moffatt. Not surprisingly Moffatt took out the inaugural Riverland title winning all three competitions involved, wake cross, tricks and starts.
Later that month a Speedboat Extravaganza was held at Renmark at Jane Eliza Landing attracting 1500 spectators. Names like Gonzo, Reaction, Alcatraz, Aussie, Bullet, Desert Rat and Lancer were amongst a big group of boats at the event. Boat Aussie, driven by one of our local speedboat stalwarts Murray Dyer, took out the Riverland Outboard Championship and handicap races. Desert Rat with George Robbins at the wheel won the Riverland Inboard title. Also there amongst some 30 boats in all were SX, Injection, Sundance, Jamie Too, Ricochet, and another local character Joe Smart with Snoopy. Desert Rat reached speeds of 180 miles per hour in an entertaining display.
Riverland bowlers face each other in knock out situation ■ WITH 36 bowlers nominating for sectional play in the Zone Four State Men’s Singles last weekend, the event overflowed from the scheduled venue im Loxton, to the rinks at Barmera. Nine sections were played in all with the winners David Mills (Barmera), Darren Piltz (Moorook), Andrew Hill, Craig Treloar, Dennis Treloar (Berri), Ben Quarter-bournes (Renmark), Peter Kimber (Loxton), Gary Pursche (Waikerie), and Phil Ashton (Barmera).
Knockouts will be played at Loxton this Sunday to find a zone representative for the state finals in Adelaide on January 29 and 30. In an early bird start at 8am, Piltz meets Ashton and an hour later the winner of that match plays Dennis Treloar. Kimber then takes on Quarter-bournes, Mills versus Pursche and Hill plays clubmate Craig Treloar. State triples sectional play is programmed for Nuriootpa on Sunday, January 22.

team back. In Monday’s match, a high scoring draw was played out with NT Country.
Fitzsimmons timely return
FORECASTS of a cooler summer will certainly not help the Riverland Turf Cricket Association. More games of cricket across the region were cancelled due to wet pitches and continuous rain drops at the weekend. At least we don’t play by the Duckworth Lewis System because no-one would have any idea how to calculate that.
Knight, Hume show form THE SA Outbacks made a relatively good start to the Australian Country Cricket Championships, winning two from its first five games in the Victorian based competition. Berri’s Andrew Hume and Karoonda’s Corey Knight have both made contributions. Knight has mainly batted middle order with scores of 7, 24 and 28 in the longer version of the game and 8 and 31 in the Twenty20 competition. Hume has had less game time playing just the two Twenty20 games to date and claiming 3/34 and 1/29. Interesting to note Hume, a left arm spinner, did open the bowling in one of the Twenty20 matches. The Outbacks beat Victorian Country and East Asia Pacific easily in the first two rounds but losses to Queensland and NSW Country teams in the Twenty20 has set the
RENMARK’S premiership chances have been bolstered by the strong return of key quick Luke Fitzsimmons. Having the tall bowler back at full strength after injury is a bonus. In fact, rainy conditions on the weekend did not stop him picking up a wicket with the first ball of the match.
SPORT
Bowls program still hot topic ■ I RECEIVED an interesting telephone call from an experienced local lawn bowler following last week’s article regarding the round seven and eleven men’s pennant matches that had been interrupted by wet weather and needed to be recommenced in an already extremely tight program. To explain the point he was raising let me refer to the extra matches that we often see in a sporting program that are sometimes controversial. Take Riverland Football League’s A grade competition is just one example. Over the years, three complete rounds of matches have been played but to fill up the season, two or three additional games have been programmed. Not finishing a season with an equal number of complete rounds has often been labelled unfair and in some cases, clubs have considered that having a tough draw for the extra fixtures has cost them a finals spot.
The same situation has applied in men’s first division bowls. The purpose of my caller’s contact was to advise that he was certain that at one stage it had been introduced that if fixtures were effected in the way the weeks seven and eleven games have been in 2011-12, those matches would be completed at the end of the last completed full round and the last two extra matches would be deleted. So looking at this season, round fifteen brings to an end three complete rounds and is to be followed by individual weeks 16, 17 and 18. With individual rounds seven and eleven to be completed after rain interruptions, they would be played in weeks 16 and 17 with the programmed extra games 17 and 18 dropped out of the program. To me that seems fair as the three complete blocks of five weeks is completed and it is the extra games that are lost. My caller “had no idea
why the proposal had been dropped”. While talking to him I asked why he thought the program had been left so saturated for such a long period. Was it because the bowlers were so enthusiastic that they wanted the season to go that way or was it because clubs required their facilities to be utilised as much as possible during the season for fund raising reasons? He felt the latter was a major factor as many clubs had commitments to service. As far as these 2011-12 restart matches are concerned, early indications are that in some quarters there has been some positive reaction to double headers, twilight and Sunday games and the like. There are reports that a late afternoon catch up game at Loxton RSL on a Friday night recently attracted a record crowd. Could these necessary experiment’ possibly lead to some changes in future seasons?

This type of novelty event continues to provide plenty of excitement and at the next meeting on February 4, an-
other Figure 8 Ramp Race, will be part of a big program. The Pa Higgs Memorial for Modified Sedans, Riverland Formula 500 title, Dave Wilson Street Stock Memorial, Lightning Sprints, AMCA’s Super Modifieds and Wingless Sprints, will guarantee non stop action. Also last Saturday, Dan-
iel Drewett finished ahead of Jason Duell and Craig Buchanan in the MJS Street Stocks, while in the SA versus Victoria Modified Challenge, the placings went to Dave Smith, Wade McCarthy and Tony Schmidt. Shane Morrow was best in the Burnouts, from Peter Leehman and Brenton Jones.

Quick bowler no more? LOXTON’S A grade bowling stocks may be dealt a blow if it cannot regain the services of a key bowler who is moving to Adelaide.
Lack of scores IT is a continued disappointment to see a lack of Riverland cricket scores available on the internet. Surely the association will look into utilising that service better in the future for the benefit of the game.

Key Demons unavailable A WASH out of the Waikerie-Ramco and Berri match at the weekend may favour the Demons if teams can be changed for this weekend’s one dayer. Simon Frankel, Andrew Hume, Peter Safralidis and Ryan Dale were all unavailable on Saturday, opening the door for what would have been an incredible debut by 13-year-old Powan Singh.

Five-a-side idea benefits local soccer
DIVING INTO CHAMPS
REPORT BY
CALLUM TRIFONOFF THE struggling Riverland Soccer Association’s B grade competition may be given a new life with the possibility of a five-a-side option to be played as part of a renewed format. After a lack of numbers in past seasons, the Riverland Soccer Association has raised the idea of reducing team player numbers to encourage clubs to enter a B grade side. At the RSA’s annual general meeting recently, a possible five-a-side competition was discussed with plans to go ahead with the concept as early as next season. RSA president Bill Bucon said the five-aside idea may lead to a stronger B grade competition in the future. “The biggest issue is Renmark Olympic can fill two teams and Barmera United can fill two teams but Berri River Rangers and Loxton United are the clubs which can struggle,” Mr Bucon said. “Instead of saying ‘can you get 12 or 13 players’, it can be six or seven players.”
■ READY TO GO: Around 50 swimmers from across the Riverland will show off their talents at today’s state country championships in Port Pirie. Story on Page 26.
