EC funding may cease By BRAD PERRY RURAL Financial Counselling Service SA is preparing Riverland growers for life after exceptional circumstances, with funding set to cease at the end of next month. While it is unknown whether the Federal Government will extend the subsidy program, it is expected the funding will no longer be provided. Rural Financial Counselling Service SA general manager Kay Matthias said if

the funding is no longer available from March 31, many growers will be forced to think about their future in the industry. “I think it will be quite a jolt for local growers because they’ve had this support now for so many years,” she said. “We’ve been trying to make our clients aware that it might not continue so it is not such a big shock if in fact it doesn’t. n Continued Page 2

Local tourism’s record year? By BRAD PERRY A RIVERLAND tourism official is predicting a record year for occupancy as tourists flood back to the region. Destination Riverland chief executive Tony Sharley said the region is going to “turn the corner after the first three months of this year” with record occupancy numbers. “This time last year we were having our lowest occupancy in the previous six

Drought funding to end next month

Apprentice and trainee numbers on the rise

Young, skilled workforce

Decisions about future

By BRAD PERRY

MARCH 31 will come around quickly. That is the date when exceptional circumstances funding along the River Murray will end. In today’s Riverland Weekly, Rural Financial Counselling’s Kay Matthias states many growers will have to make a decision on their future without the program offering interest rate subsidies. While we are no longer in drought, the Federal Government saw that the Riverland still needed help and extended the program last year. This time around I am not so confident there will be an extension. For some growers this funding can help put tea on the table for their family. Industry groups lobbied hard to get the last extension but cries for help this time round are likely to not bring the same result.

THE Riverland and Mallee has more than 900 current apprentices and trainees with the numbers quashing claims the region is struggling to build a young workforce. On the verge of the Riverland and Mallee Vocational Awards, organisers have revealed the high numbers of apprentices and trainees, despite claims last year there were not enough in the workforce. Berri Rotary Club member and organiser Andrew Gower said the numbers of young people working in the region is extremely positive with 300 trade apprenticeships currently employed. “I think there’s been a bit of an indication that apprentice num-

Mr Gower said with apprentice and trainee opportunities in the Riverland and Mallee, the younger generation will remain in the region. “Giving people local opportunities for employment and training is obviously going to keep them here, it is obviously going to benefit local businesses, which in turn will then benefit the whole community,” he said. Loxton’s Reece Pash,

who is currently doing a traineeship in pest management, said he completed year 12 and wanted to remain in the region. “I wanted to stick around and do a trade and I didn’t really want to go to uni in Adelaide,” he said. “I found this job after two years of sticking around, so I was probably almost on the verge of moving away to Adelaide and then this popped up.” Apprentice carpenter Mat Barry moved to the city and ended up moving back home quicker than expected. “Being in Adelaide, I eventually did want to move back to Loxton but probably not as soon as I planned but it turned out that way and I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

Mr Sharley said skiing and speedboat events have helped attract tourists to the region. “A big reason for people coming to the region is to visit friends and relatives and about 33 per cent of visitors to this region basically come to visit friends and relatives and I reckon that right

now, the people who live in the region are talking it up and saying you’ve got to come back up, the fish are biting, the river looks great, it’s been a good period,” he said. “I think just generally in the region there is a bit of a buzz at the moment. “I think this is the best start to the year from a tourism point of view.”

“It just gives them that bit extra to help put food on the table but also takes that enormous relief off having to reach huge interest payments so often that many of them have to do. “I think what it will do, if it does happen, is make many of those people who were just hanging in there make a decision about whether to stay or go.” The counselling service, which relocated its office back to Berri from the Loxton Research Centre yesterday, expects a rise in work if exceptional circumstances does end in the region. “What it will mean for us is that possibly our work load might spike in the short term because there will be those people who have to make a big decision about their future,” Ms Matthias said. “They’ll work very closely with our staff around that and if of course, they do decide to exit which we hope not too many do, but if they do, then we will support them through that whole process.”

Mindarie Mine one step closer with plans for it to recommence...

Within five months MURRAY Zircon is hoping the Mindarie Mine will be operational again within five months as rehabilitation at the site continues. Around 40 people attended a meeting at East Murray on Tuesday night for an update on the mine’s current situation.

Murray Zircon secretary Steve McEwen said the feedback is generally positive. “We ran through an update of the rehabilitation work we’ve been doing out at the Mindarie area and that’s online to be cropped with a cover crop in March, April this year,” he said.

“There are some people with some concerns about long term rehabilitation but we’re addressing those issues. “We feel we are getting closer to an approval from the government in the relatively near future. “To get going after that it then takes some months to mobilise

and organise mining contracts and the likes, so it’s still in that order of three to five months off from recommencement.” Mr McEwen said the general vibe from the community is that Murray Zircon has acted responsibly towards rehabilitation at the mine.

Secker wants suspension on juice trade By BRAD PERRY MEMBER for Barker Patrick Secker will call for a suspension of trade on Brazilian orange juice concentrate in Parliament next week. The United States recently banned imports of Brazilian orange juice due to traces of the fungicide carbendazim being found in some cheap concentrate with concerns it may cause birth defects. However, South Australian Citrus Industry Development Board chairman Peter Walker said calls to ban the imports would do more damage than good at this stage. “We have called for more rigorous testing and obviously if there is a fungicide in the product, obviously there should be a

recall,” he said. “My biggest fear is if we do take hype in relation to this, the consumer may well be confused and not buy any juice. “Let the government agency do their job in relation to finding out whether the fungicide is in imported orange juice.” Mr Secker said the concentrate trade must be suspended until the juice is verified as safe, with more testing by quarantine needed. “In the situation where we’ve got this thing over hanging us, I think we should actually take the proper precautions and do a lot more testing because we do have public health here,” he said. “The Riverland growers are doing it tough as you know and they would, in many ways, welcome this because they have a

concern about actually selling their fruit and competing against the concentrate. “I think the growers would generally, from who I’ve spoken to, agree to a suspension for the reasons that I outlined, which is actually getting people to test for it. “To be safe, I think we should suspend the trade until such time as we know it is actually healthy for our Australian consumers.” According to Mr Secker, it would be irresponsible for Australia not to take action over this matter.

Regional Development Minister in the Riverland today FEDERAL Regional Development Minister Simon Crean is in the Riverland today discussing the draft Murray Darling Basin Plan. Minister Crean is visiting Renmark to meet community leaders and continue the discussion about responding to the plan as part of the transition to a more sustainable economy. During his visit, he will tour Almondco and it is also understood Minister Crean will head to Loxton to discuss a proposal for a Riverland and Mallee Primary Producers’ Business Centre. Minister Crean recently visited Adelaide where he spoke with local RDAs about diversification.

BIRD watchers would have noticed an abundance of pelicans in the region as the Riverland becomes a stop over for the bird th. whilst it is moving south. Department of Environment and Natural Resources district ranger Phil Strachan said pelican sightings have been made in large flocks in areas across the region. “There has been some big breeding events up around the big inland lakes (Lake Eyre and the

Call for hospital inquiry By BRAD PERRY

Let you love know how you feel this Valentines Day Place your message in the Riverland Weekly Classifieds and the first 2 lines are FREE

SHADOW Health and Ageing Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith has called for an independent inquiry directed by Premier Jay Weatherill into allegations about the state of the Renmark Paringa Hospital and Aged Care facility. Minister HamiltonSmith met with Country Health SA chief executive officer Belinda Moyes yesterday where he said he was looking for answers to concerns raised to him by Riverland residents. “The Premier needs to appoint an independent person to look into all of this and report back,” he said. “I raised all of the issues to do with Renmark Paringa Hospital with her and I’ve explained how important it is for Coun-

try Health SA and the minister to now address those concerns with the community in Renmark Paringa and deal with each of the matters raised.” However, State Health

and Ageing Minister John Hill accused the Shadow Health Minister of turning the meeting into a “political stunt”. “The meeting held today with the chief executive officer of Country Health SA was a routine briefing on a range of issues that is offered to all new Opposition health spokespeople and this attempt by the latest spokesman to turn this into a political stunt does a great discourtesy to the CEO and her staff,” Minister Hill said. In a letter to Minister Hill last week, Minister Hamilton-Smith said he raised six points concerning matters raised at the Renmark Paringa Hospital and Aged Care facility. He said the standard of care at the hospital needs attention, there has been a removal of key

services and staff including the dismissal of former Director Of Nursing Tania Martin, the current management style at the Renmark Paringa Hospital needs reviewing, there is a lack of a proper complaints process for families and staff and the selection process of the new DON is concerning. “There is a suggestion the clinical nurse position down there may have been moved to Berri, which interferes with the doctor’s ability to carry out grade one surgery...and effects some other specialists,” he said. Country Health SA denies claims made by Minister Hamilton-Smith. “A rigorous, formal and confidential complaints process is in place at Renmark Paringa Aged Care Facility, and at all hospitals and health care

facilities,” Minister Hill said. “Country Health has informed me that the clinical nurse position at Renmark Hospital has not been moved to Berri.”

The Premier needs to appoint an independent person to look into all of this - Martin Hamilton-Smith

Community member joins DON panel A WELL regarded and active member of the Riverland community has been added to the selection panel for the new Director of Nursing at the Renmark Paringa Hospital. Interviews have been held and an announcement is expected to take place next week on the new

candidate. The selection comes after Shadow Health and Ageing Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith said the community did not have a say in the process. “I believe the selection process for the permanent postion for Director Of Nursing has already com-

menced but yet the community is not happy at all with the constiution of the panel,” he said. Minister HamiltonSmith said the process should be halted and reconstituted. “This position is looking after people’s grandparents, there is 86 of them up

there and the community have got a stake in how this place is run,” he said. “It is only reasonable that they should be involved in the selection process of the DON, instead it is loaded with officials from the department and that is unacceptable.”

Time to act on Mill Corner as land slips out of the community’s grasp THE Loxton Waikerie Council is likely to submit an expression of interest to the real estate agent selling Mill Corner, which was put up for sale by the State Government last week. Despite several attempts to have the land transferred to council’s name for community use as part of plans to build a prime tourism spot, the State Government is yet to budge. Loxton Centenary Feature Committee chairman Bert Haslam sent an email to Loxton Waikerie Council chief executive officer Peter Ackland encouraging council to further show its intent for the land. “I believe the council should express an interest to say yes, they want it free

unless it is a holding bay for trucks or something like that. “We should be building up the tourism rather than an eyesore.” The Loxton Centenary

Feature Committee has plans to build tourist facilities around the Counterbalance sculpture. Mr Ackland said council will more than likely show an expression of interest to the selling agents. “Prior to the signs being erected the council had made its position quite well known that council would pursue the land but only the condition that the land was gifted to it and there would be no costs associated with that,” he said. “We will ask the council to lodge an expression of interest to the selling agent along the same conditions that the council has always had, that is at no cost to council.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Where’s our medical transport services? AS A past deputy chair then chairman of the Riverland Health Authority during its relatively short existence, I have to fully support the theme of the leading article of January 19 (Transport Squeeze). The potentially vital Berri hub of the region’s health services in the future was just a ‘twinkle in various ministers’ eyes’ at that stage but now matters are certainly moving along to fruition. Yet, a few aspects of that leader may be gently challenged, however, i.e. the Renmark Paringa Nursing Home allegations may turn out to be a case of other causes, not under staffing.

What these may be I have no idea, nor do I have any useful suggestions but that is a possibility that should not be ignored when the regional chief executive officer assures us of staff levels being in accordance with health department guidelines. Mr Neilson would be obliged to adhere to these levels, whatever they may be. Suggesting that ‘some of the smaller Riverland hospitals will have services centralised’ (for that you may read ‘curtailed’) will, as in the past, send a wave of anxiety through many in our communities, especially amongst the elderly, who, naturally, have valid concerns over the whole matter. Visiting staff to outlying areas of the region, from the RRHSI,

FOR SALE

may be withdrawn in the face of their services then becoming available in one central hub. So, coming to the main theme of the leader, that irritating matter of transport does raise its ugly head. How do we access these services? Should the overall picture be altered? The most useful bus service in place, at a modest cost should then, with government and local government support (already fully acknowledging that it was initiated, I believe, by the Berri Barmera Council) be expanded. Volunteer driving journeys to Berri for patients unable to access other means should be reimbursed for at least vehicle

fuel and maintenance needs, unless this is already happening, of which I am not aware. In all of this, the health department should be encouraged by communities (voters) to dig somewhere deeper into the overall budget purse. As long as transport is upgraded, thus improving the current situation, there are ample opportunities for the department to enjoy lesser rural expenses which need not be outlined here. So it all gets back to money and as pointed out by the editor, walking is not a suitable alternative. Allen Bennett, Waikerie.

The Investors Club Don’t rely on your Super - Consider residential investment property WENDY Priestly, spokesperson at The Investors Club believes, superannuation is often not enough. With share markets responsible for poorly performing super funds since 2008, Australians need to develop the skills and know-how to invest in alternative channels to support their retirement. Wendy says the widely-held belief that you must have a high income to invest in property is a misconception. "Those thinking to invest must choose properties that will attract good capital growth and rental yields - this is what enables them to invest further, she said. 'There are a number of reasons why most investors don't buy beyond one investment property. "ABS figures show that 50 per cent of investors are postcode buyers. 'Buying in the area where your own

home is ties you to the local property cycle - a poor strategy. "Property is widely regarded as a major vehicle for wealth creation but it's surprising the relatively small number of Australians who use this channel to fund their retirement." Australian Tax Office statistics show 73 per cent of investors stop after one property, while the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that 50 per cent sell their rental property within the first seven years. Kevin Young, chief executive officer and founder of The Investors Club, which has helped more than 3300 investors on average incomes build multiple property portfolios since 1994, says the most common setbacks for investors are a high cost of repairs and extended vacancies. "Both are problems that stem from a bad property choice, costing you not

just money but your confidence too," Mr Young said. "Good capital growth is essential. It's important for investors to be savvy in their purchasing, looking outside their own areas and in markets across the country for areas forecast to have strong growth. "A good investment property will also attract quality tenants and deliver strong rental yields. “Investors need to have a business mind and look for features which would be attractive for a tenant, not for themselves. “Buying on emotion is one of the biggest mistakes investors make." Victoria’s most outback pub for sale

THE renowned Werrimull Hotel is the only hotel for 60 kilometres and is classed as Victoria’s most outback pub as it is the furthest pub from Victoria’s capital – Melbourne. Werrimull is situated in the heart of the Millewa, a large strip of dryland farming land situated between the River Murray to the north, the Murray Sunset National Park to the south, Mildura’s irrigation district Sunraysia to the east and the South Australian border to the west. Visitors can be assured of old fashioned outback hospitality combined with hearty country meals. Lovely shaded areas

provide a great meeting place for a cold beer or wine, whilst inside offers air conditioned comfort. The legendary hotel holds various competitions and special events throughout the year. Australia Day always proves popular commencing with a typical aussie breakfast, renouned yabbie races, keg races and sulky races. The hotel was built in 1938 and has 10 bedrooms available which are suitable for families, couples, twin share or singles. Rooms are heavily booked during the wheat harvest with truck drivers and grain handlers and

during the winter dirtbike trekkers travelling into the sunset country. The hotel also gets a lot of people passing through either on their way, or coming back, from their great adventure into outback Australia so bookings are always recommended. The Werrimul Hotel is open 6 days a week from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 11pm, Sundays 10am to 6pm and is closed Mondays. Meals are served from 12 noon to 2pm and 6pm to 8pm. riverland and mallee vocational awards

FEATURE

Riverland and Mallee’s talented workers

THE 29th Riverland and Mallee Vocational Awards will take place next Friday with more than 30 budding professionals and trades people vying for awards across several categories. Those people nominated are the faces of the future for a range of industries across the Riverland. Held at the Berri Resort Hotel, the awards begin at 7.30pm with Bruce Mallet to MC the evening. There will be four major award sections on the night consisting of a winner in the vocational education training student category, Australian school based apprentice, trainees and apprentices categories, as well as the big win, the overall apprentice of the year. Also in the apprentice of the year award categories is industry categories for automotive, electical, building and construction, engineering and hairdressing. Berri Rotary Club president and organiser Robin Foley said she expects a capacity attendance of 280 people. Of those in attendance, 2009 winner Jason Nagy will also speak on the night. Ms Foley said much support has been put behind the awards night after it did not go ahead last year. “We’re grateful to our sponsors, I think it reflects a renewed confidence in the area that we’ve been able to get some sponsors on board,” she said. “I think the region’s got good prospects with so many wonderful young people. “Committing yourself to an apprentice or a trainee is a big commitment for some employers, particularly in uncertain financial times, so they need to be congratulated.” Tickets for the event will be available until tomorrow, with allocated ticket holders able to buy extra tickets before February 6.

WHILE Neil Drogemuller undertook his Certificate III in Horticulture he came across his most challenging moment when he lost his hearing. Neil, who is partially deaf, began to see his hearing slowly deteriorate to the point where his hearing aids no longer worked. “I lost it and it was really hard, I couldn’t listen to music or talk to people, I found it hard to look at people face to face,” he said. “Before my hearing dropped I went by with hearing aids and that got

me along really well and I went to school with no problems.” During the time he lost his hearing, Neil said he communicated via text in his role as a maintenance worker for the Renmark Paringa Council. “The council were really good to support me with it,” he said. Neil got a cochlear implant in January last year and the improvement in his hearing has been a life changing experience. “The first few months it was a slow improvement but it is getting better and

better,” he said. “As soon as I got the implant, it was a slow process but it was really great to be able to talk back on the phone again, listen to music which is what I really enjoy doing, basically all the stuff I really like doing. “I am nearly at my peak of what I can hear, so basically I’ve just got my life back.” n great worker: Neil Drogemuller has overcome big challenges during his traineeship.

Choice career change WHEN Rebecca Flack came across a traineeship with the Riverland Division of General Practice, she knew it was the career change she was looking for. Rebecca worked at the Renmark Paringa Nursing Home for five years before applying for a traineeship in business administration with the RDGP. “It was totally different from what I’d done before working in the nursing home, so I thought I’d try something new and

ended up loving it,” she said. After now finishing her traineeship, Rebecca is enjoying her role at the RDGP.

It was totally different from what I’d done before working in the nursing home.

“It’s very diverse, it can lead anywhere,” she said.

“I’ve been involved in so much different training that I would have never had access to. “I’m helping an Aboriginal community quit smoking at the moment and doing all types of different things like healthy tune ups around the Riverland. “I’ve got a healthy tune up at Cadell Training Centre coming up.” Rebecca has a career goal to become a social worker.

STEPHEN Beelitz is regarded as a natural leader. The apprentice fitter and turner at Berri Estates/Accolade Wines came first place at the Regional World Skills competition in Adelaide in September last year. Given eight hours to perform a certain task, Stephen won the fitting category and just missed out on first place in the turning category, finishing runner-up. Good family home T

HIS attractive brick veneer home offers quality living at an affordable price. Three bedrooms, master with built-in robes, spacious kitchen, modern bathroom, lounge and separate family room. Three reverse cycle airconditioners plus a cosy combustion heater provide year round climate control.

There is plenty of car and workshop space with a carport under main roof plus an excellent shed with side-road access. A very nice Colorbond pergola provides plenty of outdoor living space. Located within walking distance of the Renmark Plaza this home is well worth an inspection.

COBDOGLA tennis sensation Luke Saville received an early 18th birthday present when he continued to stamp his mark on the game by claiming the Australian Open boys title on the weekend. Saville returned home this week to spend time with his family before flying to Queensland on his birthday yesterday for a Challenger tournament. In what has become a tradition on his return to the Riverland, Luke and his brother Troy had a hit of tennis at the Cobdogla courts on Tuesday. Saville, who is the world’s number one junior seed, said returning home is a relaxing way to take time out of a very busy schedule. “It’s nice coming home after a pretty stressful week last week and it’s nice to put the rackets away for a couple of days, he told the Riverland Weekly from the Cobdogla tennis courts. “I spent the first 10 years of my life here training and playing social tennis here and it was very nice. “Any weeks off I come back here and relax, I’ll always be a country boy that’s for sure.

Saville said playing tennis with his brother brings back memories. “I’ve got a few good memories here back in the old days and it’s nice to go for a meal at the Cobby Club, he said. “It’s good to come back here and have a hit with my brother, he’ll give me a few tips, he watches a few of my matches and it’s nice getting another perspective on my game and the things I need to work on. Overcoming a mid match concentration lapse, Saville finished strong to claim the Australian Open boys’ singles title, defeating Canadian Filip Peliwo, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 at Rod Laver Arena. “Filip Peliwo, he actually beat me the week before in the lead up tournament in the final, so I knew it was going to be a tough match, so I didn’t go out there thinking he was some slouch, I was going out there with my mind set for a tough match, Saville said. “I dropped the second set in a tight one seven games to five but I managed to regain my composure, change my shirt, change my hat and just had a bit of a think during the break at one set all and came out and broke him first game and managed to hold on from there.

“It’s been my dream to win an Australian open title ever since I picked up a racket. “I made the final last year and lost pretty easily, so to turn the tables and win was a very special feeling. Saville’s focus is now on finishing out the year as top junior seed and climbing the senior rankings, where he currently sits 1177th. “I think I’ve posted a few good results with those types of players and I feel like I belong at that level, he said. “This year I can really focus on playing a lot more futures...and hopefully making a few finals and winning a few and if I could win a few futures that will probably put my ranking up to 400. Continuing to be a role model for young Riverland tennis players is also on Saville’s mind. “If I’m a decent role model for the kids, that’s good, he said. “My brother coaches a few of the young guns coming up and I came out here and had a look and there is definitely a lot of talent coming through. “So if I can keep posting a few good results and having a few great achievements and those little kids start to strive for me, that will be nice.

CHARLIE’S SPORTS GOSS

The T Riverland’s most authoritative sports commentator ...

WITH GRAHAM CHARLTON

Triple success for bowlers ■ STATE squad member Andrew Hill and his Berri teammates Graeme King and Andy Gapco combined to defeat a rink skippered by another Berri bowler, Mark Kubank, by five shots in the Region Four final of the State Triples Championship at Nuriootpa last weekend.

The Hill team will now play in the SA finals in Adelaide on March 4 and 5. Also last weekend, Loxton’s Peter Kimber represented the zone in the State Singles finals in the city. Playing in a tough section, Peter acquitted himself well, defeating both top city player Simon Dawe and another country representa-

tive Joe Blacka, before going down to prominent Salisbury member Brett Davis. Looking at local men’s pennants, last weekend the battle for the first division premiership continued to intensify on the back of some surprise results. Firstly Waikerie’s resounding four rinks to nil, 96-69, victory over fourth

placed Renmark RSL put them within 10 points of top placed Berri after Berri, which was considered passed the post for the 2011-12 title by many critics earlier in the season, were held to an 85-all draw by third ranked Renmark. At Loxton the home side made up some valuable ground on Renmark RSL in

a battle for a top four spot but not as much as it would have liked against a tenacious bottom team in Barmera, who grabbed two of the four rinks. Then on Sunday, Barmera turned that improved form into success in a huge upset against Renmark in a catchup round 11 game. Division one ladder

points are now Berri on 169, Waikerie on 159, Renmark on 120, Renmark RSL on 117, Loxton on 110 and Barmera on 45. So there should not be many mortgages taken out on the present positions just yet. There are also real fights going on for finals spots in divisions two and three.

Records fall at State Softball Champs ■ OFFICIALS have been searching the record books as they believe the performance of the Riverland Softball Association in taking out two titles at the Senior State Softball Championships at Barrett Reserve, West Beach, last weekend was a best ever result. Both teams that entered, the B grade, with a grand final victory 10-1 over Hills, and D grade by defeating Gawler Maroon 10-3, grabbed titles. Talking to veteran championship player, now official, Marianne Smith she said the two major victories come after many years without a title. “I can remember us winning a title many years ago,” she said. “I reckon that was also in D grade and that Lyn Hoffmann was the coach.” First time carnival co-ordinator Mary Geddie reflected on the overall effort of everyone involved in this year’s car-

nival campaign. The enthusiasm from officials and coaches this year obviously rubbed off on the leading players and they made themselves available for the trip to Adelaide. With three A grade and four B grade teams nominated for the tournament, they played in a combined round robin competition with the top two sides from each division playing off in the grand final. In early games, Riverland lost to their grand final opponent Hills 8-12, so a 10-1 victory in the title decider was a big turnaround. The team was coached by Roy Grenfell with his assistant Brendan Hill and while Grenfell was anxious to praise the overall team effort that won the title, he made special mention of the pitching of multiple association best and fairest player Loxton’s Cara Venning, her clubmate Haylee Symens,

Dani Nixon and Mandy Rossack (Berri), as well as Cobdogla’s Vikkie and Naomi Taylor, with the latter promoted from the 2011 junior team. Other team members were Tamara Benham, Hayley Carey, Tammy Dowdy, Taylee Healy (Berri), Bronwyn Smith, Julie Cook (Cobdogla), Amy Lidgerwood (Loxton) and Helen Johnson (Waikerie). The D grade was involved in an eight team round robin competition that included two masters nominations. Against its eventual grand final opponent Gawler Maroon, in the final minor round game the D grade also went down 4-7 only to well and truly reverse the result right at the business end. That last round robin match also produced the low point of the carnival for the Riverland camp as Lyrup’s Cheri Healy unfortunately broke her ankle in sliding into home base.

Beth and Greg Hueppauff coached the side which comprised Mary Geddie (Berri), Melissa Bristow, Monica Haaja, Gloria Dyer, Toni Hayes, Kendall Hayes, Colleen Smith (Cobdogla), Kerri Miles (Loxton), Deanna Holtham, Sue Jungfer, Cheri Healy, Kerry Hartup (Lyrup) and Waikerie’s Emma Kerr, who was to surprise opponents when she produced a fine effort when installed as catcher for the final. Riverland umpires Denise Moldovan and Jason Culbertson officiated at the championships. Local Juniors are now gearing ready for their State Carnival to be held in Mount Barker from February 17 to 19, with the selectors to have some headaches in choosing under 17 girls and boys teams as the enthusiasm has spread and something like 21 players have nominated to fill the 14 positions involved.

■ WINNERS: The Riverland B grade State Softball Championship title winners (above) and below the local D grade team was also successful.

■ DISPLAY: Loxton Waikerie Councillor David Kimber took this photo comprising of a series of photographics installed in the town streets of Spain. The idea is being floated to honour local sporting heroes. ■ From Page 28 I have acknowledged on several occasions previously, that establishing any museum type site would be a massive task. Where does it go, who pays for it, what would be the criteria for subjects, where do we find the information, who will be prepared to do the work? Loxton councillor Trevor Norton is one person who has taken a keen interest in the proposal and courtesy of a fellow councillor David Kimber, he has passed on a novel approach to the idea. When visiting Astorga in Northern Spain on a recent

overseas trip David was impressed by a series of historical and reflective black and white photographs installed in the town’s streets. He considered that “similar photographs but obviously of our greater Loxton region, would offer a fasinating insight and photographic record of significant events and interesting happenings”. From that, Trevor is asking “why can’t sport be involved in such a venture right across our region with it perhaps being linked to a Hall Of Fame website?” “If implemented a website could include locations for the various displays and these could be anywhere

throughout the Riverland from the Paringa to Ramco sports grounds,” Trevor said. “As long as it was co-ordinated and the displays were all of a standard design it could become a very unique tourism icon for the district.” This would indeed be an interesting concept and I guess a real upside would be that every centre would get the chance to acknowledge their own favourite sporting sons and daughters but at the same time they would be jointly part of promoting the Riverland as a whole. But I hasten to add it would still be a massive task.

The number of events won by Linton Price at the Riverland Speedboat Spectacular on the weekend.

Price is right on the mark

■ RENMARK’S dinghy and speedboat racing ace Linton Price won all of his five events to take out the 25HP/550cc class at the weekend’s Berri Resort Hotel Speedboat Spectacular, in front of a big crowd at the Berri riverfront. Also amongst the winners in the 37 event, two day program was Linton’s son Cameron who won the J1 Junior class. In addition, the promising youngster took part in a handicap four race series involving J1, J2 and J3 boats for a win, two seconds and a third placing. Another Riverland boat Brian Jeffery’s ‘Bondage’ had to cope with some mechanical issues and was down on its normal revs but still managed to come in second in the six litre

injected class and, after starting the Les Schrapel Memorial Final in sixth place, crossed the finish line fourth. Despite his success over the weekend, Price has experienced a fair share of disappointment over the past week or so. This weekend he was planning to defend his 550cc title at the Australian Powerboat Championships in Melton near Melbourne which meant he was to miss the opening two rounds of the Riverland Dinghy Derby championship at home. Naturally he has been putting all of the required preparation work into his speedboat. “At the last minute they have decided to run the 550cc titles at Dargle, NSW,

Grand slam high in talent ■ OFFICIALS reported low numbers but a very high standard of play in last weekend’s stage of the Riverland Junior Tennis Grand Slam at Renmark. In the singles competitions, Alex Kudra from Berri-view took out the boys’ 10 years of age group from Renmark`s Jake Stoeckel, in 12 years Tahlia Matulick (Renmark Tintra) won with Hayley Stewart (Berri-view) the runner-up in the girls.

Barmera’s Blake Koskinas won the boys ahead of Loxton’s Drew Kassulke. The girls’ 14 years age group went to Shenae Rucioch (Renmark) from another Renmark player Nicola Durdette, girls’ 16 age group saw two Berri-view entrants Marnie Stewart and Alicia Shotton finish first and second and boys’ 16 years went to Jack Jaensch (Renmark Tintra) from Barmera’s William Koskinas. In the girls doubles,

Hayley Stewart combined with Loxton’s Abbey Wilson to win at 12 years level, Renmark pair Jamie Jaensch and Shenae Rucioch won 14 years and Tianna Adamczyk (Renmark) and Alicia Shotton the 16 years. Parris Drakopoulos and Jake Stoeckel (Renmark) won the boys 10 years, Drew Kassulke and Jordan Smith (Loxton) the 12 years, and Barmera combination William Koskinas and Josh Spilios the 16 years.

Ready to roll at Riverland Speedway ■ RACE: Berri driver‘Georgie’ Higgs’ car (left) and John Burton’s, of Adelaide, vehicle which race at the speedway on the weekend. ■ A FULL program at the Riverland Speedway this Saturday night will feature two blue ribbon events that acknowledge two legends of the club. The Dave Wilson Street Stock Perpetual Plaque event which will incorporate the club’s championship has attracted 23 cars and will see locals like Rhys Heinrich, Neville Nitschke and Baz Sullivan going up against hard charging Victorians Robbie Faux and Mark East, as well as Murray Bridge’s Anthony and Craig Buchanan. The Pa Higgs Memorial for Modifieds has 12 entries and being a lead up to the state title we know what to expect when locals Brendon

‘Georgie’ Higgs and Marty Raams take on Victoria’s Jeremy McClure, Peter ‘Spider’ McCarthy and we see the return of the South’s John ‘JB’ Burton. The meeting also boasts 12 A.M.C.A.’s, 10 Lightning Sprints and three cars busy at burnouts. In the A.M.C.A.’s it is again, Victoria via Darren ‘Plugger’ McCarthy and Phillip Worboys versus SA led by SA41 Brian Chadwick and in round four of the Lightning Sprints, it should be a fiery affair as the girls’ Kate Weiss and Melissa Crouch clash with the boys such as Sam Chapman. Round two of the Wingless Sprints also sees the girls

in June,” Price said. “So now I have a boat ready to race but no race and I will still miss Sunday’s Dinghy Derby because my dinghy is not prepared. “I am hoping to take part in Friday night`s Dash 4 Cash, however.” Price did not know how he would handle Sunday, not being able to be part of the keen rivalry and competition of the Derby but I took the risk and asked him for an opinion on the main chances to win the event. “Jason Gordon has to be a great chance again but Matt Thur was a big improver last year and Kyle Gregurke looked good in finishing third,” Price said.

“Brent Martin is another local hope and now that the WA pair Jay Branson and Todd Williams have committed to the whole championship series, they could cause a surprise. “I understand they have made some changes to their boats to better suit our racing.” The dinghy program at Renmark this weekend starts on Friday night with the Dash 4 Cash under lights in front of the Renmark Club, followed by an attempt on a most dinghies on the water record on Saturday. Then on Sunday the 32nd Dinghy Derby involving some 70 boats will race in the main river and around the local creeks in what is expected to be another 100 kilometre classic.

Basketballers show worth at higher level ■ I SPOKE to a very satisfied president of the Riverland Basketball Association on Monday night, Les Lange, after the annual Starplex Junior Carnival was held at Gawler and State Country Championships in Adelaide over the weekend. “We took 13 teams to Starplex and when you take into account that we quickly put our teams together from across the Riverland and that they play city sides that are constantly training and playing together, our results are very good,” Lange said. “The people running the event constantly express their surprise at the number of teams we are able to

muster and the standard we play at.” A feature of the weekend was the under 16 boys B1 team winning an exciting grand final by two points, while teams to finish runners up in their divisions were the under 12 girls division one, under 14 girls division one and under 16 boys B2. The under 12 girls division two, under 14 boys two and both the under 18 girls and boys B1 sides all reached the semi-final stage. “Our division one men’s and women’s teams at the Country Championships were both very young and effected by unavailability and

last minute withdrawals,” Lange said. “But we were still competitive throughout and the coaches reported improvement in each game they played. “We really do have some outstanding juniors coming through and we could really be a force in a year or two at this level if we can keep them together. “An example of the improvement when you play at this type of competition is young Josh Warnock from Renmark and team coach Glen Millard rated him as probably the best and most consistent player over the weekend”.

Adams back in the swing of things

against the guys, including our own Lucy Evans, Mikayla Hein, Cody Atkins and Daniel Obst. And then there is the Figure 8 Ramp event involving over 20 cars, including Kobi Koch, Lex Hentschke, Neville Gibbs, Tony Trevorrow and visitors Joel Wilksch and Dan Hein. The likely winner? It’s anybody’s guess. The following Riverland meeting is on Saturday March 10 and will feature a country round of supercars. the modified state title, F500 club championship and the annual caravan race. Meanwhile, Waikerie’s Sunline track will race on Saturday, February 11.

■ IT HAS only taken a few months for Berri golfer Warren Adams to start adding to his trophy collection after he returned to the game from a layoff of some twelve months or so. Recently he has won two stableford competitions at the Berri course, the first last Thursday when he finished with 39 points, three clear of Tim Branford, then on Sunday he won on a countback, again from Branford, both with 34 points. Adams, who originally moved to the region from New Zealand, was also a useful cricketer with Berri during the 1990s. In other stablefords at the club last week, Spencer Baylis accumulated 38 points to beat Kelvin L’Estrange, 36, on Saturday and on Friday night Dallas Zeliff 22 points finished

ahead of a trio of club mates on 19. Dallas Zeliff? Now this is a fellow that when I interviewed him for an article late last year confessed to having qualified with honours at being a golfing ‘hack’. But a second look at the results indicated this event was a twilight stablefordplayed cross country. Never for a moment would I suggest Zeliff would use darkness to manipulate a better score but having to play cross country would have certainly suited his usual style of play. Seriously, Zeliff has improved his golf and he is obviously delighted that he “can now actually hit the ball in the air”. And the reason for the improvement? “Accepting an offer

from Tim Swinstead to give me some one on one coaching,” Zeliff said. “Tim is an amazing fellow. “After some four nights on the practice greens he has me hitting balls so much better.” Could cross country then be a thing of the past for the new ‘fairway man’ of Berri golf? Meanwhile at Waikerie, Craig Davis notched up his second one over par 73 in just a few outings when he took out a stroke competition last Saturday. The best off the stick score at the course was recorded by Wes Bald a few years ago with a 67. Reports are that the Waikerie course, where Davis is the superintendent, is recovering well from the serious damage it suffered in a storm late in 2011.

Sporting hall of fame proposal By GRAHAM CHARLTON TOWARDS the end of last year I was invited to attend a joint meeting of representatives of all of our local district councils to elaborate on some thoughts I, and others, had floated concerning the wisdom of a Riverland Sporting Hall Of Fame. I was surprised at the interest shown in any such proposal and at one stage was asked whether I was focusing on a possible tourist attraction or simply a form of statistical record. I replied that although I believed that the region sadly lacked a permanent collection of past results across

nearly all sports, my thinking was more in line with creating an attraction for both locals and visitors with a museum like development. The most popular thought from the meeting seemed to surround the creation of a Hall Of Fame website and with the matter shelved for another day, I left the gathering accepting that in this modern age that may be the way to go. But thinking about it since, I do not see such an approach being of any use whatsoever as far as visitors to our region are concerned in particular. ■ Continued Page 26
