Member for Chaffey demands answers from State Government over millions of dollars in lost production
WORTHLESS WATER
By BRAD PERRY
MEMBER for Chaffey Tim Whetstone has accused the State Government of spending about $60 million of taxpayers’ money on water trades that are currently worth less than $2 million. He said Riverland food producers lost millions of dollars worth of
revenue in the 2010-11 water season as the State Government forced irrigators to remain on reduced water allocations, while it “propped up SA Water’s full entitlement from the River Murray. “Irrigators in the Riverland deserve an explanation from the Minister, Mr Whetstone said. “The water that was carried
over by the Minister was unnecessary since South Australia received its full entitlement the following year. “The Minister had every indication that SA would receive its full entitlement but refused to consider giving irrigators their full entitlements before July 1 last year. “Irrigators estimate this
cost them millions of dollars in lost production. During question time in Parliament yesterday, River Murray and Water Minister Paul Caica said the Riverland was in drought and the State Government did what was required. “We spent many tens of millions of dollars to purchase water at
or around the market price at that stage to keep permanent plantings alive, to ensure that the Riverland itself, like the Lower Lakes, lived to fight another day, he said. “We did what we needed to do.

CAR PARKING in the major Riverland towns seems to be an issue that is frequently raised. Berri is currently undergoing a traffic report by engineers which will provide an insight into any problems. I agree with many local business owners that there is not enough parking within walking distance to some shops. There are predictions around that given the Riverland is an attractive option for retirees, the population may steadily rise. If that is the case, the current car parking system in Berri will only experience further pressures. There is also minimal room for a car towing a caravan or a large sized camper van to stop in the Berri town centre. Let’s face it, many tourists would drive straight past Berri and onto Renmark if there are no areas to stop. That is where the town needs to be proactive and find ways to bring these tourists in. In both Loxton and Renmark, or any town across the region, tourists could easily drive past if they found it difficult to park. People will argue there are plenty of parking spots for cars in the region. Ultimately we need an attractive, tourist specific parking area in each town so they are guaranteed to stop and spend.
MURRAY Zircon’s Mindarie Mine is on target to recommence production within six months. The reopening is expected to create around 60 jobs on top of local electricians and turners who were recently employed to work on the site. A smaller attendance was on hand for another community meeting in East Murray on Tuesday night but Murray Zircon director Steve McEwen said the evening was productive. “We’re on target to put in

what we call the cover crops onto the rehabilitated land in April,” he said. “We’ve advised the community that we’ve commenced then recommissioning or refurbishment of our primary concentrated plant which is the major bit of plant we’ll be using. “There certainly is a lot more activity up there at the moment than there has been for a little while now and that will just float along as we move towards the recommencement.” Mr McEwen said transporting zircon from the region was an issue raised, with
some concern about trucking it out via the Karoonda to Wunkar road. “We did ask the department when we met with them whether or not it could be upgraded because it’s a state managed road and they indicated there are a lot of roads in the country in that condition and they would be getting to it when they could,” he said. Those in attendance also discussed the possibility of lodging an application to the Federal Government to source funding to boost telecommunications in the Alawoona to Karoonda blackspot area.
Dahlias bounce back at Winkie BY JUSTIN EVERS FIVE months since a freak storm tore apart his dahlia shadehouse, Winkie resident John Menzel has rebuilt his beloved structure. The storm, which hit last October, left only one post standing in Mr Menzel’s shelter. “We were running pretty close to the thin line and there is still little things to be done but it’s all up and running good now,” he said. Mr Menzel said he was really thankful for all the help he received during months of rebuilding. “We had a small group of people help us rebuild which was really good,” he said. Just three weeks after the storm, Mr Menzel was able to begin growing

MORE than 50 people attended the Riverland’s first ever paranormal information night in Renmark on Friday. In attendance were two members of Adelaide based The Paranormal Guide (TPG) and members of the Riverland Unexplained Paranormal Investigation team (RUPI). Founder of The Paranormal Guide Ashley Hall, who previously lived in the Riverland, said the response to the information session was pleasing. “I was actually quite surprised with the turnout itself because I use to live in Renmark prior to 2009 and a lot of the people I talked to then were kind of against this sort of thing,” he said. “I’ve found it quite encouraging that there seems to be a polarity shift in what people believe and what people feel comfortable talking about out there.” Following the information session, TPG and RUPI members investigated what is believed to be the Riverland’s original morgue in Renmark. TPG technician Paul Tipic said during the one hour long operation the group’s high tech equipment picked up words from what he said was believed to be a spirit of a little boy. Mr Hall said the group will return to the region. “When I lived in the Riverland I’d heard of quite a few haunted locations, so the morgue is obviously just the tip of the iceberg,” he said.

Mallee CEO steps down SOUTHERN Mallee District Council chief executive officer Rod Ralph will step down from his role on July 15 following a decision not to renew his contract. With Mr Ralph’s five year term coming to an end, he has chosen to move out of the area and return to Adelaide. He said the decision is based on personal reasons and has not been caused by any criticism towards himself or council in recent years. “While your comments are correct that there’s been some issues, I just keep reminding everyone that they’re not issues specific to this council, they are issues faced by many councils
and it just reflects the change in how local government needs to operate to be successful in meeting the needs of its community,” he said. “I’ve made a decision not to renew that contract and I have a house in Adelaide. “My wife has returned back to Adelaide and I’m hoping to find work in the near future closer to Adelaide instead.” Mr Ralph said managing debt has been one of the biggest challenges he has faced during his time as CEO of the council. “I don’t want to suggest that Southern Mallee is different to most other local government, we all face a number of challenging times, one of them largely being financial,” he said.

Future remains cautious for irrigators despite 100 per cent allocation start SOUTH Australian Murray Irrigators chairperson Caren Martin welcomed yesterday’s announcement that irrigators will begin the new water year with 100 per cent allocation but remains cautious about the future. River Murray Minister Paul Caica said the early announcement gives irrigators and water users the certainty they need to make important business decisions for the coming water year beginning in July. It will be the second successive year irrigators open with 100 per cent water allocation but Mrs Martin said there are still many
issues growers are dealing with. “I think the (100 per cent allocation) announcement is to be expected in a flood year,” she said. “There are still lots of issues to deal with and the certainty not there across the board. “So as far as moving forward with further investment, I think people are still waiting to see what the near future holds.” Minister Caica said South Australia will receive its full 1850 gigalitre entitlement flow during 2012-13. He said while the return of flows is welcome,
irrigators cannot forget the devastating impacts of the drought which was exacerbated by the historic over allocation of the river’s water by upstream states. “It was only the prompt action taken by the State Government to suspend trade from New South Wales until March 31 that has ensured irrigators can have access to their full allocations from July,” he said. Mrs Martin described the suspension of water trades between South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales as “politics at its worst”.
Whetstone demands answers ■ From Page 1 “We paid what we had to, to make sure that permanent plantings in the Riverland remained alive...and to do what was necessary to ensure that critical human needs for water was not compromised.” Minister Caica said the carryover system for the coming irrigation season has been compromised. “On the matter of carryover, I worked very closely with our irrigators in the Riverland, and elsewhere, to put in
Caica: We stopped trade to protect entitlement security LAST week the State Government announced the immediate suspension of water trading from New South Wales to South Australia until the end of March. While I acknowledge this may have caused some issues for a small number of irrigators, particularly those that hold water licenses in both NSW and SA, the State Government was forced to take this immediate action in the interests of the irrigation community as a whole. It was not something that we wanted to do and the action taken was limited to what is absolutely necessary to protect our entitlements for the next water year, while minimising any disruption to trade for irrigators wishing to buy and sell water in and out of SA. We made the decision after the Victorian Government’s announcement of an embargo on the trade of some water allocations for the remainder of the 2011–12 water year from
BY WATER MINISTER
PAUL CAICA NSW and a subsequent move by NSW to suspend water allocation trade with South Australia from April 1 to June 30. The action’s of NSW created a major incentive for NSW irrigators to trade large quantities of water into SA before April 1 this year with a view to then potentially having it moved on into Victoria most likely after April 1. The problem for SA is that any water traded to Victoria after April 1 is treated as “late trade” and is accounted for in the next water year (2012/13). This means that any imbalance in trade in and out of Victoria between April 1 and the next water year will potentially come off SA’s 1850 entitlement flow, which could subsequently impact on our ability to provide
and the other being the requirement for better, newer stormwater management. “There’s things like the rural property addressing that we’ve had to implement which has added further cost to something which wasn’t a core local government undertaking to start off with. “The net result for this period of time is we have gone into greater debt than what we would of wished but I balance that with the need for people living within our region to have good working, critical infrastructure.” Mr Ralph has also indicated to council that he is currently looking for new employment and may leave the position before his five year term expires.
full allocations. It is concerning that despite the high levels of rainfall and flooding in Victoria and NSW, SA still has to take extraordinary measures to protect the security of entitlements of our irrigators against actions by upstream States. I have subsequently announced that irrigators in South Australia will be able to start the water year on 100 per cent allocation. But the Victorian and NSW suspensions demonstrate that when it comes to Murray-Darling Basin water the upstream states will always act in their own self interest without regard to its broader impacts within the Basin. It also emphasises the need to have an equitable and strong Basin Plan that puts the needs of the whole Basin above the parochial interests of individual states and why the South Australia is not prepared to accept second best.

place a carryover system,” he said. “That carryover system, of course, for this coming season has been compromised as a result of the decision of New South Wales to possibly look at ways by which they could circumvent the decision of trade with Victoria—pump it into South Australia, out of South Australia and into Victoria. “As a consequence of that, potentially, there is an implication that I could not provide 100 per cent carryover for our irrigators.”

Community proposes art precinct
A new two-step application process has been implemented to ensure maximum benefit from the $20 million Sustainable Futures Fund.
A SMALL group of locals have put forward a proposal to prevent the demolition of the old Renmark High School building. Community members attended Tuesday night’s Renmark Paringa Council meeting proposing that the building become part of a Community Arts Precinct. Council has agreed to meet with the small group to disscuss the proposal further. The precinct would cover many areas including arts and crafts, tourism, ecology and environment, astronomy, visiting artists’ workhops, visiting artists’ accommodation, an exhibition space, a shop for selling local artwork and produce. As part of the proposal the precinct would include the McCormick Centre and the Riverland Woodworkers. The group also envisages the high school building and the precinct to have a community garden, eco camping area, monthly art markets and much more.

■ WATER: DENR district ranger Phil Strachan looking over water as it flows onto the Katarapko floodplain due to high River Murray high flows into the region.
THE closure of the Lock 4 Reserve to allow water flow over the Katarapko floodplain will significantly benefit the environment but at the same time restrict camping at Easter. The reserve was closed for an indefinite period last Friday and roads to Lock 4 have been breached to allow the steady flow of water onto the floodplain, based adjacent to Berri. Department of Environment and Natural Resources district ranger Phil Strachan said inundation of the floodplain will be very beneficial for the environment. “By opening the road

BRAD PERRY we allow the water to go through at it’s natural height and the main benefit of that is all of the regeneration we’ve got and there is a lot of eucalypt regeneration through that area that will now get another water,” he said. However, Mr Strachan said the release of water onto the floodplain will mean a number of camp sites at Easter will be inaccessible.
“The actual Lock itself is getting refurbished and to allow some of the machinery in and out a temporary road was built to accommodate the size of some of the machines, in particular the cranes,” he said. “Lock 4 infrastructure has been decommissioned because of high water, so they’ve taken all the machinery out and basically the temporary road has to be breached… to allow water over the floodplain. “It all happened very quickly this high water.” With flows above 50,000 megalitres per day currently coming into
South Australia, Mr Strachan said between 50 to 75 per cent of campsites in the region will be still be accessible during the Easter period. He said camping areas at Katarapko, Eckert’s and Lyrup flats will potentially be unavailable if water continues to rise in the coming weeks. “As soon as it goes over 60,000 megalitres per day about 50 per cent (of campsites) are available,” he said. Work will begin again at Lock 4 when flows drop to below 35,000 megalitres per day, which is expected to be around October.
Wildlife enclosure set to become tourism drawcard A BERRI based wildlife enclosure currently home to emus and kangaroos will expand as part of a strategy to attract more tourists to the region. Situated on the Sturt Highway next to the new Riverland Industry Park, the wildlife en-
closure is set to grow as part of a venture spearheaded by Mission Australia. New features to the area will include a 20 metre walkthrough aviary and a waterhole with koalas and wombats to be housed
at the site. Meanwhile, Banrock Station Wetland and Wine Centre has taken on 23 kangaroos from a Barossa winery after they were relocated due to concerns from an animal rescue group.

■ WOOD TURNING: Riverland Woodworkers’ (from left) John Lacey, president Brian Lock, Carol Edwards, Jack Glazbrook and secretary David Turnbull ready for this weekend’s visit from two top wood turners.
Riverland Woodworkers boosted by prestigious visit TWO of Australia’s top wood tuners are visiting Renmark this weekend in what is being described as a major boost for the Riverland Woodworkers group. Ron Allen and George Pastuch will be showing off their skills to Riverland Woodworkers and the public at the local clubrooms in Renmark over two days. Riverland Woodworkers
publicity officer Jack Glazbrook is hoping the visit by the accomplished wood turners will attract more members for the club. “It’s just a great boost to have them come, they have so many skills that we don’t have anybody to teach us up here,” he said. Mr Glazbrook said the organization has more than 50 members and he believes it helps keep the
elderly active. “I personally think if you don’t do something when you’re retired you can get in a bit of a hole and possibly die young,” he said. The age of club members varies with the oldest being 92 and the youngest less than 10 years of age. The public can attend the wood turning workshops at the Renmark premises on Saturday from 1pm.

Public meeting over drag strip?

THE Riverland Motorsport Club is likely to call a public meeting in a bid to end negative talk about whether the establishment of a drag strip and driver education facility in the region will ever occur. An agreement between the Berri Barmera Council and the motorsport club to lease land near the Riverland Field Days site in Barmera is expected to be agreed to in the coming months. However, Riverland Motorsport Club president Denis Oates said some people in the region have lost faith in the de-
cade long drag strip battle and he said a public meeting would demonstrate whether there is widespread support for the project. “A lot of it is negative talk because they are saying we’ll never get it off the ground because of the time frame,” Mr Oates said. “It is only really a dedicated few that have kept this thing going. “I think we’re going to end up calling a public meeting to find out whether or not the Riverland wants this project to go ahead or whether that’s it.”
The club has been forced to continuously update its business plan and feasibility study for the drag strip and driver education facility as it seeks funding. “We’ve got to do everything right because I’m not going to go through all this garbage again,” Mr Oates said. “We’re in the process of seeing local contractors to get some realistic figures.” Once the drag strip and driver education facility are built, Mr Oates said the whole Riverland economy will benefit. “Once we get it up and go-
ing, the people in the Riverland that will get a big spin off of this, they will be going ‘why didn’t this project happen years ago?’” he said. Mr Oates said he wants to see the project begin “to prove all the doubters wrong” but even he admits after pushing the issue for more than a decade that he will cease involvement if there is anymore lengthy delays. “If we haven’t basically got the go ahead by Christmas this year, that’s it for me, 11 years is enough,” he said.
A BIGGER than expected crowd attended the official opening of the Waikerie riverfront on the weekend. The event, which incorporated a family fun day and movie night, combined with the Waikerie Twilight Markets, in a welcome injection to the local economy. Organiser Yvonne Carter said the night was a major success. “We got over the numbers that we were expecting,” Mrs Carter said. There were a number of features at the event, including an outdoor deckchair cinema featuring the movie Red Dog. There were also some new riverfront features including an adult outdoor gym and toilet blocks that were officially opened to the public on the day. “The kids and the adults were playing on that (the gym) and testing that out,” she said.
Traffic engineers review Berri parking By BRAD PERRY AN appointed engineer will conduct a traffic survey in the Berri district centre this weekend as it prepares a report on parking in the town. Phil Weaver and Associates has been engaged by the Berri Barmera Council to identify issues and provide recommendations through a report on car parking in central Berri. The decision to hire an engineer came after continued public comment about the lack of parking along main streets of the town. Berri District Business Association president Barry Phillips said local businesses are missing out on trade due to a lack of car parks in front of shops. “In Berri there is certainly not a lot of space to attract locals who are the day trippers coming through who would like to pull over and stop and have a
look around,” he said. “People who want to come and visit Berri in particular want to be able to do it without having to walk too far otherwise it will deter the them from staying on.”
by the association. “Berri wants to attract as many people as it can and if it means timed parking is going to increase the local shoppers and tourists it’s a positive step and
We have all that parking down at the senior citizens area but it seems too far away for people. Mr Phillips said feedback he has received from association members is that timed customer car parks are being used by businesses in the area. “It’s all about enabling the customers to park but obviously there have been issues I believe from time to time where parks have been taking up space a majority of the day where casual parking has been occurring, which has a hindrance on local customers to go shopping,” he said. Introducing more timed parking would be welcomed

it will be interesting to see what the outcome of the report is,” Mr Phillips said. Berri Barmera Council Mayor Peter Hunt said hiring a traffic engineer is the biggest step taken to look closely at park-
ing during his time invovled with council. “The whole idea why we’ve done that is because we are lacking in space,” he said. “We have all that parking down at the senior citizens area but it just seems to be that little bit too far away for people.” There has been speculation that a median strip on Vaughan Terrace will be expanded to incorporate another carpark. “We have quite a big median strip there but whether we want to go into that I don’t know, so we’ll just wait for this report to finish and then we’ll put our own ideas into it,” he said.

LIFE would have been very different for Josie Nelsson if she had never moved to the Riverland. Fourty eight years ago she relocated to the region from Unley in Adelaide following her marriage. Living on a winegrape property at Monash with her husband, Josie immediately found the way to meet people in the country was to volunteer her time and get involved in local communities. It was the five decades of service to the region that saw Josie named the 2011 5RM Riverland and Mallee Rotary Club’s Citizen of the Year last week. “I was a bit shocked because I didn’t expect it,” she said. “I’d never lived in the country before and I came
up here really not knowing people, so I got involved in the community. “I believe that if I’d stayed in the city and hadn’t moved into the country, I would never have done the things that I’ve done.” Over the years, the number of community groups and organisations Josie has been involved with amazes her on reflection. From the Berri Barmera Health Advisory Council, the Riverland Private Hospital Board, the Berri Bowling Club, the Riverland Women’s Shelter Management Committee, the Barmera Girl Guides Support Group, the local action planning group and the Riverland Zonta Club, to name a few, Josie has certainly been busy. The former Berri Barmera

IT HAS been over 60 years since they last saw each other but for Barmera historian Max Scholz and former Riverland residents Jim and John Graham, they recently reunited like they had never been apart. In the 1940s, the trio attended Loveday Primary School and were close friends, regularly spending time at the Loveday Internment Camp, where Jim and John’s father worked as a sergeant. Karoonda District Hospital group celebrates 65 years
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Auxiliary’s milestone THE Karoonda District Hospital Auxiliary believes the local facility is just as important today as it was when the group formed in 1947. Sixty five years after it was formed, the Karoonda District Hospital Auxiliary celebrated the milestone yesterday. Around 40 past and present members of the auxiliary attended the celebrations to reflect on the group’s achievements. Karoonda District Hospital Auxiliary secretary Carlene Schulz said the auxiliary has helped build health care in the region over an
extensive period. “We’ve always had good membership and people who are prepared to work very hard, particularly in the early days,” she said.
is a very worthwhile thing because we need to keep our hospital going in this community. “It’s a vital place and the biggest employer,
The auxiliary is a very worthwhile thing because we need to keep our hospital going. “In the early years it was very important because there were no government grants as such and any money that the hospital needed was raised by women in the auxiliary. “I think the auxiliary
along with the school, that we have.” The original Karoonda District Hospital was on the corner of Sherlock Road and Audrey Avenue, which later became the doctor’s residence and surgery. The adjacent separate
morgue was used as a patient waiting room. Later on, the hospital moved to Peake Street in a former boarding house and today is located on Stokes Road accommodating 25 long stay residents and four acute beds. Today the auxiliary’s main concern is that Karoonda does not have a resident doctor to service the district population of 1000 people. “Dr. Ahmad left in December after seven years’ service (and) since then the Medical Centre has been serviced by visiting locums,” Mrs Schulz said.
Carbon Farming Initiative workshop FOR farmers wondering what the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) has for them, there’s an opportunity to find out while FarmReady subsidies are still available. FarmReady funding runs out in June 2012, so farmers could potentially have 65 per cent of the course fee reimbursed if they act soon. An Introduction to Carbon Farming & Trading is a one-day course to be held at the Bowhill Community Centre on April 4. The CFI allows farmers and land managers to earn carbon credits by storing carbon or reducing greenhouse gas emissions on the land.
These credits (or ‘offsets’) can then be sold to people and businesses wishing to offset their emissions, including the large emitters who are legislated to do so under the carbon pricing mechanism. The one-day workshop will equip farmers to make decisions about the CFI opportunities they will be offered. The training has been developed by Carbon Farmers of Australia, a not-for-profit company, that offers guidance for farmers entering the carbon market, particularly as sellers of carbon offsets. LAP’s rebranding World Youth Day celebrations By CALLUM TRIFONOFF
BY JUSTIN EVERS RIVERLAND West Local Action Planning Group committee members have unanimously voted for the group to change its name. The group has been rebranded Riverland West Landcare and project officer Karen Bishop said the name change reflects the roles of the organisation. She said aligning the group with the likes of Landcare will help reach more community members and potential funders. “Having the name Landcare now in our title might actually make people more aware what it is that we do,” she said. “They will perhaps be more inclined to approach us about things. “The philosophy of the Riverland West
Landcare group will still be the same and that is to engage the community in natural resource management of a real broad spectrum of things, from wetlands to dry-lands to water management.” The Riverland West LAP was established in the mid 1990s working with community and landholder groups to protect, restore and enhance natural assets without the region. Mrs Bishop hopes the rebranding will attract more volunteers. “We appreciate our volunteers, they do an awesome job but they get to a point where you’re asking a lot from a small group of people,” she said. An official launch of the new branding for the organisation is expected to take place at a later date.
ABOUT 40 people are expected to attend this weekend’s 2012 World Youth Day Celebrations at the Barmera North Lake Caravan Park. The Riverland’s third World Youth Day celebration event will see people come from as far as Port Pirie join in the celebrations. Event organiser Louise Stavrou said there will be plenty on offer for the weekend’s celebrations, in-
cluding a Young Christian Student presentation, a Palm Sunday Youth Mass and a Pilgrimage Walk. “Especially for those youths in the St Francis Xavier’s parish who have been to World Youth Day internationally and have such inspirational stories to tell, it’s great for people to come and hear them talk,” Mrs Stavrou said. The celebrations, which commence at 12pm on Saturday, will run until the following morning.
Riverland singing group holds information session BY JUSTIN EVERS THE Riverland branch of Sing Australia will be holding a gathering and information session at the Berri Town Hall on Saturday. Leader of the Riverland Sing Australia group Cheryl Ingerson said it is an opportunity to promote the organisation. “We will be singing but that’s only for people that are brave enough to sing,” she said.
The group began late last year and has since gained popularity throughout the region. “I wanted to bring people together that weren’t necessarily great singers but just wanted to enjoy the experience,” she said. “I wanted to have somewhere central so that everyone in the Riverland could get an opportunity to come.” The information session at the Berri Town Hall will begin at 2pm this Saturday.

KAROONDA FARM FAIR
FEATURE
Thousands flocking to Karoonda THE Mallee will come to life at the two day Karoonda Farm Fair this weekend. With more than 300 stalls Zand something for just about everyone, the fair is one of the biggest attractions on the events calendar in the Mallee. The annual fair showcasing local, state and interstate farming and general interest products, services and events attracts up to 15,000 people to Karoonda annually. While there are many primary industry fields at the fair, organisers believe what sets the Karoonda event apart is the entertainment. Included in the busy schedule is the Karoonda Yard Dog Championship, Sheep Counting, Speed and Sports Shearing, Fashion Parades, a Yester Year Display and Log Chopping. A larger Lifestyle Pavilion caters for all indoor exhibitors including clothing, craft, comput-
ing, children’s toys and gardening products. The fair, which began as the Karoonda Sheep Fair in 1985, will take place in the year of the farmer.
It’s a great promotion for Karoonda and its district.
Karoonda Farm Fair manager Ray Bald said the Mallee is proud to host the event and the local community pours many hours of support into helping it to be successful. “It's a great promotion for Karoonda and its district and the people that live in the area certainly get behind it,” he said. “It puts the district in a very good light as far as what the town
has to offer and what the region has to offer and it's also a great fundraiser for the organisations that get involved. “We're very proud of what we produce and a lot of volunteers put time in to make it work.” Mr Bald expects the introduction of log chopping to be a hit, while working dogs, sheep shearing, vintage displays of old cars and machinery and the ute muster should attract large audiences. The Karoonda Cup will also be heavily contested across all ages following its return to the event in 2012, according to Mr Bald. “The Karoonda Cup is a fun thing where you pull a tin sheep 30 metres,” he said. “It will be good fun and all money there goes to charity.” The Karoonda Farm Fair will take place this Saturday and Sunday with gates opening from 9am to 5pm each day.
■ FUN: More than 10,000 people are expected to attend this weekend’s Karoonda Farm Fair, while (above) there is plenty on offer for all ages.

Year of the Farmer Roadshow to feature at fair tralian farmers are amongst the best in the world, leading the way on innovation in farming techniques and delivering sustainability through best practice management of their environment,” he said. “It is vital people understand the contribution farming makes to our daily lives so that our agribusiness sector can be sustained for many years to come.” In addition to educating the future generation of consumers, Mr Bruem said a major purpose of the roadshow is to encourage more Australians to pursue careers in the sector. “Agribusiness is big business and there are many exciting ways to participate in what is our biggest growth industry,” he said. “There are abundant opportunities and you don’t have to live on a farm to get involved.”

E
arth Hour is a simple idea created in 2007 that has quickly turned into a global phenomenon and the Riverland again will embrace this event at 8.30pm on Saturday. Hundreds of millions of people across the world will switch off their lights for one hour on the same night to signal their care for the planet. In Australia, icons such as the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to Parliament House and the Harbour Bridge in Sydney switch off the lights for a good cause. Almost 2000 businesses, 334 schools and colleges, 154 councils and all 130 government departments, even four Artic stations,
will join in Earth Hour this year. The first Earth Hour event took place to show support for climate change in Sydney five years ago and was well received with millions of people taking part. Even the Coca-Cola sign at Kings Cross in Sydney was switched off intentionally for the first time since the 1970s. In 2008, the plan was to have all of Australia participating in Earth Hour but word spread and international countries signed on with Canada being one of the first. Today the event continues to grow across the world with more and more people embracing Earth Hour and what it represents.

MOUNT Barker based Solar Storage has installed over 100 kilowatts of solar systems in Lyrup alone over the past two years. The increasing number of solar installations suggests residents are embracing renewable energy as a way to reduce rising electricity costs. Solar Storage partner Brad Branch said this Saturday’s Earth Hour is a reminder of how we can and need to reduce our carbon footprint. “People need to be aware of what’s happening to the Earth and the pollution that we’re causing,” he said. “Earth Hour is a good opportunity for people to stop and think about how they can become more energy efficient, benefiting the environment and reducing their own household expenses.” Mr Branch said with the carbon tax to be introduced in Australia on July 1, electricity prises are expected to rise. “The media are speculating that South Australia is going to become the most expensive place to buy electricity once the carbon tax comes in ,” he said. “At the end of the day if you are using electricity or gas, the prices of these utilities are going to go up due to the carbon tax. “The Federal Government’s up front subsidy for solar energy is reducing by another 20 per cent on July 1 as well. “This means that customers must have their solar system installed by June 30, 2011 to get the full Federal Government rebate.” Solar Storage offers design and installation of solar systems across the Riverland and Mallee, including grid connects, off grid, remote power stations and grid connections with battery back-up. The business uses local electricians and does not charge travel costs, promising a three week turn around on your installation. “A lot of people in the Riverland use pumps, bores and cool rooms which have large energy requirements hence their electricity costs are massive,” Mr Branch said.
“You can actually offset that entirely with solar power regardless of how big your power bills are. “Regardless of how much you spend on electricity, if you go to the right company they can do a design that is big enough to offset all of your electricity costs, it will pay for itself within five years and you won’t have to pay another power bill for a further 20 years. “If you are in an area where your power goes out all the time, as it does in the Riverland, you can have a battery backup system which is automatically switching so you don’t even notice the power has gone out.” Mr Branch believes many other Riverland towns like Lyrup will embrace solar power. “It’s only a small town but a few customers have put in bigger systems and they are offsetting huge amounts of carbon dioxide,” he said. “Not only is it great for the environment but also to the benefit of reducing your ongoing electricity costs which are only going to increase more and more.” For more information about solar systems, contact Brad at Solar Storage on 0437 005 665 or visit www.solarstorage.com.au
At the end of the day if you are using electricity or gas, the prices of these utilities are going to go up due to the carbon tax.

Fire services issue warning about candle safety THE Metropolitan and Country Fire Services are encouraging the public not to take house fire risks with candles during Saturday night’s Earth Hour. “We recommend that people use torches or battery-operated artificial candles instead of candles, as they’re a far safer light source - particularly if you have children or pets,” MFS Com-
mander Allan Foster said. The fire services support Earth Hour as an important global environmental initiative but warn the public if they choose to use candles, they should keep them well clear of combustibles and never leave them unattended. For more information about smoke alarms and candle fire safety, visit www.mfs.sa.gov.au
Earth Hour quick facts • The event began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million people switched off their lights. • In 2008, more than 50 million people around the globe participated. In Australian capital cities alone, 58 per cent of adults took part in the lights off campaign. • Last year the Philippines had an early Earth Hour when power supply was cut to some of the towns.
ALTERNATIVE Energy Engineering has been designing and installing solar systems for the past 26 years. The Riverland based business specialises in stand-alone/grid-connect systems, battery systems, solar input and commercial peak lopping. From a commercial and industrial perspective, the carbon tax is intended as an incentive for operations to reduce their carbon footprint. The carbon tax may be intended to reduce the carbon in the atmosphere but only at the cost of energy to the average consumer. However, it may help in some way to get people to reduce their energy usage and consumption by the adoption of more energy conscious living habits. For those who wish to reduce electricity bills, it is still important to live comfortably, which can often be achieved by simply changing from bad energy wasting habits to becoming more energy aware. Despite changes to State Government incentives with the reduction of the feedin tariff from 44c/kwh to 16c/kwh, with additional 6-10c per kWh available from some retailers, solar powering your house is still an attractive proposition. Solar is one way to produce energy from natural renewable sources. The cost of SA electricity is predicted to become the most expensive in the world after July and households will be looking at ways to save energy. Current Federal Government R.E.Cs multiplier incentive is expected not to survive this up-coming budget. So if you are considering a solar system for your home, business or sports club you should contact Alternative Energy Engineering on 8540 3301 as soon as possible.

Taking advantage of the sun THE Riverland has more hours of sun than Adelaide and many other communities around South Australia and the region is continuing to take advantage of that fact. Waikerie based GB Electrical & Security Services is one of the largest suppliers and installers of solar panels in the region and has been busy working to meet demand in the Riverland and Mallee. The business is a strong supporter of Earth Hour and is encouraging locals to take part in switching off the lights at 8.30pm this Saturday. The demand for solar systems through GB Electrical & Security Services has continued to grow over the past six years with the business also having solar panels on its own roof to help cut electricity bills. The services provided by the Waikerie based business includes solar installation services such as grid connect and stand alone systems, inverters and batteries, solar farms, Eco LED lighting and houseboat and caravan solar installations. GB Electrical & Security Services office manager Coralie Black said the rising electricity costs have prompted many households throughout the region to enquire about solar panel installation. “It’s very, very important to help our environment and using renewable energy will help sustain the environment,” she said. Installing solar power into your home or business is a very real way of making a
difference to the continuing rising costs of electricity. “We design, supply and install your whole system from start to finish,” Mrs Black said. For customers who have found the perfect block of land but electricity is unavailable, they can install a solar power system with generator back-up for continuous 24 hour power. Or if you run a generator on your property continually, the business may be able to reduce fuel usage and generator maintenance by installing a stand alone power system and use the generator as backup. GBES can design and install both battery backup solar systems and automatic generator backup systems for your home or office. Initially many Riverlanders were cautious about installing solar power into their homes but Mrs Black said that perception has now changed with many people seeing the benefits. Not only have households embraced solar power but many businesses have also had solar panels installed. “We’ve installed systems for businesses just to offset their electricity and we will soon be offering complete energy audits for businesses who want to help the environment and reduce their energy usage” Mrs Black said For more information, call into the GBES Electrical shopfront on Ian Oliver Drive in Waikerie or contact GB Electrical & Security Services on 8541 4240.

FOR most of the young Loxton A grade cricket team, the weekend’s defeat of Renmark was the first taste of premiership success. Top of the table Loxton reversed last year’s result to score 8/173 to Renmark’s 94. The Royals were still in the hunt with the Tigers at 4/69 in chase but veteran Michael Gutsche guided his team home with an unbeaten 69. After his winning knock, Gutsche said the premiership is “just the start of something special. “I’ve got passion for this club, he said. “I was so determined to win a premiership. “I’m so happy for the young kids. After moving from Monash this season, batsman Josh Deren said he was ecstatic to win his first A grade flag. “I knew we had a talented group of guys but I wasn’t expecting it in my first year, he said. “We’ve got a young group of players so hopefully we can keep them together now. Loxton Captain Steve Inglis claimed his first A grade flag and said he will spend the winter deciding his playing future. “It hasn’t been a one year thing to win the premiership, it has been three or four years in progress, he said. “Gutsche’s experience and batting talent at the end got us over the line.

CHARLIE’S SPORTS GOSS
The T Riverland’s most authoritative sports commentator ...
WITH GRAHAM CHARLTON
Passion for baseball ■ WHEN installing Margaret Golding as a life member of the association at last Friday night’s annual presentation dinner, past Riverland Baseball President Kym Bament said she always played a passionate part. “I always valued her input at meetings, she was always prepared to speak her mind and showed her passion for the sport and also got in and helped wherever necessary to promote baseball in the Riverland,” he said. Margaret`s outstanding contribution started in 1992 with organising, coaching and scoring in junior competitions at Glossop Primary and High schools and up until 2001, she was involved
in establishing fundraising for, and coaching T-Ball at Winkie. From 1996 to 2003 she was secretary of the Riverland Junior League having joined that committee in 1993. Anybody involved in sport knows few people compete for the scorebook. But this has not fazed Margaret. She has kept the scores at junior and senior levels from Winkie to Berri, the Pirates and Barmera and has been the official scorer, including at grand finals, for both the junior and senior leagues from 1992 until 2011. Margaret served on the
Riverland Committee from 2003 to 2011, 2005 to 2011 as secretary and also found time to act at committee level for both the Berri and Barmera clubs between 1998 and 2011. This is a well deserved life membership and through it all Margaret has supported her three sons Matt, Jason and Tim in their outstanding careers. She would have been proud to see her youngest son Tim receive his third consecutive best and fairest Wesslink Medal on Friday night giving the family seven awards on end with the first going to Matt followed by three to Jason. Tim was not the only player to
receive a Wesslink Medal for 201112 as he shared the award with Berri premiership coach Nick Kuhn who finally was rewarded for his outstanding all-round performances over a long career that has included a stint in Adelaide as well as the local competition. The B Grade best and fairest award went to Lyrup Lions’ Roy Grenfell, while the Rookie of the Year trophy went to a veteran newcomer to the sport, Berri’s Ken Karpany. Better known for his exploits on the football and cricket fields, Ken would surely have to have claims as one of the Riverland’s most versatile sports people.
■ AWARD: Riverland A grade baseball joint best and fairest winners Tim Golding and Nick Kuhn.
Riverland junior tennis team dominates rivals ■ “IT WAS the biggest winning margin by either team in this long running event”. That was the comment from tennis stalwart Mike Horsman after he had accompanied the Riverland junior team to Mildura on Sunday for the annual clash with Sunraysia. A satisfied man, Horsman described how Riverland had defeated its rivals for the third time in a row but on this occasion had shown far superior depth in its playing ranks to win 63 sets to 17. In the boys division, 20 singles matches were contested and the only home team victory was a top single where Sunraysia’s talented Shaun Kelly defeated Jacob Jaensch 6-1, 6-2. Brodie Kollmann then started
the Riverland dominance with a 6-5, 6-1 win against Dave Antony at second single and from there on, the only time one of our players was threatened was right down at 20th position. Nine-year-old Jake Stoeckel fought back to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-5 (108 tie break) in a courageous effort. Riverland also won nine of the 10 boys doubles sets, including a 6-3, 6-4 result by Jack Jaensch and Brodie Kollmann over the Kelly-Antony combination at top position. The girls singles went 12-8 in Riverland’s favour but it is here that the difference in the depth of players was most apparent. Sunraysia won the top seven positions although Horsman was quick to say “our girls were extreme-
Twenty five shooters challenged at Renmark ■ THE weather was perfect, there were 25 competitors including 10 from Adelaide but the range setters Jason Hefford and Mat Redway worked to test shooter ability all day. Some targets at the Renmark-Berri Field and Game March Shoot were tough but all four grades were well supported and the competition was close with three shoot offs necessary and C grade decided by one target. Overall scores reflected the challenging range. Adelaide’s Richard Dean was an example. He started with 23/25 but dropped his last two on the very difficult stand five and like everyone else on the day, the range caught up with him. He dropped to 21/25 and
19/25 to finish. Dean took out AA grade with 63/75 followed by Rob Shawyer 66/85 after a shoot off with his fellow Renmark entrant Tony Trevorrow 64/85. Renmark pair Colin Nunn 63/85 and Kailan Markham 59/85, finished in that order in A grade after a shoot off. BJ Jensen (Adelaide) 55/90 took out B grade from Renmark’s Steve Markham 54/90 after a long shoot off and Jo Brown (Renmark) 40/75 won C grade from Bryan Stokes (Adelaide) 39/75. Adelaide’s Mike McKinnon 5/5 won Flash Target. The next Renmark-Berri shoot is the GB–Corsivia 150 Classic, set down for April 28 and 29.

ly competitive though against some talented girls and it was a great experience for all of them”. At third position, Lucy Sanderson defeated Ashleigh Smith 6-3, 5-6, 6-5 (10-2 tie break). The girls doubles was the closest section of the tournament with the home team taking out the top four matches and Riverland winning the other six. Those first four matches contained some extremely keen contests including Collett–Olofsson defeating Renae van der Hoek and Marnie Stewart 3-6, 6-4, 6-5 (10-5 tie break), Mastrippolito–Sanderson, Ashleigh Smith and Alicia Shotton 6-3, 4-6, 6-5 (12-10 tie break) and Rogerson–Daymond winning 6-3, 0-6, 6-5 (11-9 tie break) over Sarah-
Jane Albrecht and Emily Taylor. Victories by Riverland pairs included Jamie Jaensch and Shenae Rucioch 3-6, 6-3, 6-5 (10-8 tie break) against Barker–Patterson and Nicola Burdette and Megan Schwartzkopff 4-6, 6-4, 6-5 (7-3 tie break) against Paolucci and Dimasi. “The mixed doubles are usually Sunraysia’s strength but we won there too, 17-3,” Horsman said. William Koskinos, with Tianna Adamczyk, had a tremendous tussle before winning 5-6, 6-5, 6-5 (10-3 tie break) against Vinu Anthony and Isobella Collett. It was much the same when Murray Burton and Emily Taylor just edged out Jordan Fleri and Madeline Barker 5-6, 6-5, 6-5 (10-
6 tie break) and Keaton Ferber and Megan Schwartzkopff also won in a three set tie breaker. At second position Antony, with Kate Olofsson, won for Sunraysia 6-2, 2-6, 6-5 (10-6 tie break) against Brodie Kollmann and Ashleigh Smith. The overall result was a tremendous for Riverland tennis, not because of the comprehensive victory but more because of the competitive, high standard nature of the play from the top to the bottom of the team rankings. “Twelve boys from our Division One competition did not make this trip, while I understand that Sunraysia was within two or three players of having their best side,” Horsman concluded.
Surprises predicted in this weekend’s tennis grand finals ■ THE 2011/12 Riverland tennis season has contained so many faults and aces both on and off the court that it would not surprise if there were to be a few more surprises in this weekend’s finals. Last Saturday’s preliminary finals certainly set the scene. In Division One, Waikerie defeated Renmark Tintra eights sets to four after winning five of the six doubles sets and then sharing the singles scores. The Waikerie women, Jo Elson and Penny Kroehn, combined for crucial contributions with comfortable doubles victories. Key player Troy Lehmann had other commitments on the day but made it for the doubles, where partnered by Ben Haines, the pair also scored important wins for Waikerie
in close contests 7-6 and 7-5 over Andrew Giles and John van der Hoek. John Pick won a cracker of a match for Renmark at top single, 9-8 against Tom Waterson, while Haines defeated Giles 9-7. Cobdogla deserve definite favouritism in the grand final against Waikerie but if both sides have their best lineups on board it could be closer than the season’s results suggest. Waikerie, at home, did defeat Cobdogla in the opening round of the season 7-5 but since then it has gone in Cobby’s favour, 10-2, 10-2, 8-4 and in the second semi final, 9-3. The major round in Division Two has been almost freakish. In the first semi-final, Renmark Tintra ended Cobdogla Blue’s season 6 sets, 68 games to 6 sets, 61 games
and in the second semi-final Loxton defeated minor premiers Barmera 6 sets, 72 games to 6 sets, 60 games. It is no surprise then that in the preliminary final Renmark won 6 sets, 65 games against Barmera 6-60. Scores between the grand finalists Loxton and Renmark have not been that close in previous clashes this season however, Loxton won 7-5 then 8-4 but then it was Renmark’s turn 10-2. Barmera will meet Moorook in Division Three after the latter eliminated second placed Renmark 7-65 to 5-66 in the preliminary final. As a guide Barmera have defeated Moorook 7-5 and 6-63 to 6-62, Moorook won 6-59 to 6-57 and in the last meeting it was again Barmera 7-5. All finals will be played at Barmera.
Superdogs make perfect start to season against Broken Hill ■ THE Riverland Superdogs finally broke through for a victory against the Broken Hill Shinglebacks in round one of the SA AFL Masters Competition at Lyrup Oval last Saturday but they did it the hard way. After trailing by five
goals at the first break, the home side was inspired by a dominant performance in ruck and around the ground by new recruit Shaun ‘Larry Bird’ Harris and the brilliant linking play through the midfield of Ken Karpany and ran
out winners 11-6 (72) to 9-7 (61). Full back Sam Ingerson found that he could move mountains and with the aid of two dashers in Ron Foulds and Darran van der Woude, the defence got right on top.
Nathan Willmott could have claimed five goal man Sid Norton as a deduction as a dependant on his tax return, Shane Hannagan was all desperation while debutant Steve ‘Awesome’ Williams and Brenton Fenwick controlled the wings.
Riverland Football League explores changes to Anzac Day medals ■ From Page 28 In its recent correspondence the RFL acknowledges that the RSL has already had the 2012 A grade medal printed so nothing can be done about that for this season but it requests that if the Veterans’ Centre is still prepared to supply the Independent Medal, it is not to have a person’s name attached to it. It says further that if the centre is not comfortable with that, the RFL will forego the generous sponsorship and supply and pres-
ent the medal itself. The RFL does not elaborate on why it is unhappy about having names printed on medals but it seems that for some commissioners the true meaning of Anzac is an issue. I am not going to debate a definition of our National Day of Remembrance here but it is obvious that when names were added to these medals in 2011, it was only after extensive negotiations involving the R & SL Australia (SA Branch) along with its councillors and any inter-
ested parties and the SANFL. The people with the greatest interest in this issue therefore surely sanctioned the arrangement. The person whose name were to be attached to the medal was ‘to have portrayed the spirit of Anzac and to have displayed such ideals during their lifetime’. It seems football and netball associations across our state and beyond have embraced and adopted the name change including in Broken Hill, the Far West, Port Lincoln, Western Bor-
der, Kangaroo Island and, closer to home, in the Mallee where the football league called for nominations and settled on Geoff Blacket. In netball, sister FR Casson was chosen. In the Riverland, our netball associations, as I understand, have no objection to their ‘Marg Lambert’ and ‘Audrey Hefford’, Anzac Medals. But this is apparently not the case with the RFL Commission as far as the Chas Gardner and Norm Kassulke awards are concerned.
Thursday March 29, 2012 – Riverland Weekly • 27 We cannot oppose it because it is a matter of sovereignty but let me tell you frankly we do not love it ~ Olympic president Jacques Rogge.

Club delegates discuss an increase in first division teams at Barmera meeting
Bowling’s proposed revamp ■OVER recent years there has often been thoughts put forward from various sources that the structure of local bowling competitions, particularly at top level, needs a revamp. At a meeting of club delegates at Barmera last Thursday night, this issue was addressed with two such proposals. Suggestion one contemplates an increase in First Division teams from six to 12 with the size of the teams being reduced from four rinks of four players to three of four, for example from 16 players down to 12.
The 12 teams would come from the existing First Division plus those filling the top six positions in Second Division in 2011-12. The new competition would involve one complete round of 11 games prior to Christmas. Then the top six and bottom six teams would form separate competitions and each would play a complete round of five matches and then decide premierships in the same manner that exists now with top four playoffs. First Divisions Red and Blue have been suggested.
Pinnaroo wins title ■MINOR premiers Pinnaroo overcame an early collapse that saw them floundering at 3 for 11 to fight themselves to 188 in last weekend’s Pinnaroo and Border cricket grand final and then held Lameroo to 133 to grab the 2011-12 premiership. Lameroo’s opening attack of Josh Ridgway (2 for 58) and Martin Sumner (5 for 57) soon had Sunny Vogt, Brad Rosenzweig and Kane O’Loughlin back in the shed without bothering the scorers but opener Heath Boseley (87) and Scott Kirkbright (31) steadied the ship until another three wickets toppled quickly. Some useful tailend con-
tributors led by Luke Kirkbright (26) proved to be invaluable in the end result. Lameroo then had no answer to Pinnaroo paceman Brad Rosenzweig who had impressed in his first appearance with Murray Districts at the SACA Country Carnival earlier in the season. The Pinnaroo and Border Cricketer of the Year tore through the opposing batting, bowling 16.4 overs for figures of 7 for 26. His fellow opening bowler Andrew Bradley was solid in support with 2 for 47 as only Craig Altus (31) and Cam Barrett (29) threatened with the bat.
Why not Major League and Minor League instead? Under this format, minor round matches would then total 16 instead of the 22 played currently, so releasing some of the considerable pressure that has always seemed to plague the program. All other teams would play in their respective divisions as they do now. The second proposal refers to a seven-a-side scenario involving singles, pairs and fours running parallel to a 12 a team competition. This would mean 19 players
compared to the present 16 and obviously that could make it difficult for Second Division teams to participate. It is felt however, such an approach would offer a higher challenge to the better bowlers. Indications are that there are conflicting responses to these proposals and that is understood because the suggested changes are considerable. We can only wonder whether the recommendation that ‘this format would be on a trial basis in 2012-13’ can entice enough clubs to experiment with something different?
Riverland’s best of the best in pairs competition ■LOXTON Bowling Club stalwarts Malcolm Wachtel and Peter Kimber will play in the Region Four Finals of the Champion of Champions Pairs competition at Morgan on Saturday, April 14 after winning the Riverland title at Renmark on the weekend. The Loxton pair defeated Moorook’s Wayne and Darren Piltz 15-4 in round two of the tournament, Berri’s Craig and Dennis Treloar 11-10 in a cliff hanger semifinal and in the final defeated Bob Tankard and Neil Dunstan from Renmark RSL in another close call, 12-11. Other clubs represented were Loxton RSL by Craig Kernich and Jade Wright, Barmera by Ken Barnett and Rob Hams, Waikerie by Jon Segneri and Ken Dubrich and Renmark by Ben Quarterbornes and
Eddy Schulz, while forfeits were received from Lyrup and Monash. Meanwhile, Renmark’s John Van der Wyst and his partner Joan Hodgson will travel to Adelaide for the third weekend in a row after they won through to the final 16 teams in the State Mixed Pairs Championships at the Prospect Broadview Club last Sunday. Playing only one game amongst the remaining 32 teams in the competition, John and Joan scored a five on the last end to grab a 2119 victory from Marion’s Adam Forbes. This is a remarkable effort by the Renmark RSL duo as Joan has only been playing the sport since the 2010-11 season and up until now has been involved in social bowls with only limited pennant appearances for her club.

Loxton reverses result IN 2010-11 there was an upset result in the A grade softball grand final when Cobdogla defeated title favourites Loxton but there was no repeat on Saturday when the same two rivals met for the 2011-12 premiership at Glassey Park. Loxton won comfortably 8-1 with junior Brett Anderson (pictured below) producing a superb display in the field and with the bat to take out the Best on Ground award. It was a good all-round team effort in the Strikers’ third A grade premiership in four seasons. In the B grade grand final Lyrup had Deeanna Holtham Best on Ground when it defeated Loxton 14-6 and in the C grade, Berri defeated Waikerie 17-8 with Austin Karpany named best-a-field.

ANZAC MEDAL CONTROVERSY
RFL wants to cease naming award By GRAHAM CHARLTON

Loxton wins 33rd shield BY JUSTIN EVERS LOXTON High School claimed its 33rd consecutive Championship Shield at the Riverland Interschool Athletics Carnival in Waikerie yesterday. Loxton finished on 2107.5 points, well ahead of Glossop (1806.5), Renmark (1710.5) and Waikerie (1475.5). Loxton High School Principal Steve Marshall said the win was a great achievement for the school.
“It is a fantastic result and it is all due to the dedication and skill of the staff and students,” he said. Tenille Schammer, from Loxton High School, claimed the Most Outstanding Female Athlete of the meet, while Glossop High School student Tyson Schrapel was the Most Outstanding Male Athlete. Winning the Ball Games Shield was a consolation for home side Waikerie, while the Handicap Shield was won by Renmark High School.
