Berri direct sold By BRAD PERRY

THE new owners of the Berri Direct building have stated they will “consider supporting local produce”. A group of investors known as Pat & Co Unit Trust, who also own The Riverland Complex off the Old Sturt

Highway, have finalised the purchase of the facility. Pat & Co Unit Trust’s Tony Moro said the building complements their long term vision for the site. “We will consider supporting local produce as this is consistent with our desire to add value and recognition

for the Riverland,” he said. “We wish to support employment and showcase the region’s products and we are looking forward to getting support from the Berri Barmera Council in working with us so that our vision for the area will be successful.” While the building has

been sold, the future of Berri Direct is still unclear with the business for sale until April 30. Berri Barmera Council chief executive officer David Beaton said interest was high for the purchase of the building. n Continued Page 4

Eye on our streets for crime THE Riverland Farmers’ Market has had a trying six months and after overcoming adversity to keep the popular attraction running smoothly, it was dealt another blow. Last month, the Berri Senior Citizens’ Hall where the market office is located, was broken into and about $2000 was stolen. The news that little of that money would be returned to the market through insurance did not help. As a result of the break-in, the notfor-profit group took all cash off the premises overnight. And the market office was raided again over the Easter weekend. At shacks right along he stretch of the River Murray, what appears to be a targeted operation has seen many premises broken into and valuable items, such as boats, stolen. In Blanchetown the locals are fighting back by installing security cameras and running patrols in the quieter holiday periods. Over in the Mallee on-farm and stock theft appears to be on the rise with reports of sheep dogs even being stolen. We need to keep an eye out on our streets to help stop what appears to be a rise in crime.

fully supportive of the upgrade. “The people that utilise the hall see the long term benefit,” he said. “Obviously it is going to improve the amenities and the appearance of the building that’s available for people who use the theatre.”

Making a point WHEN I stated about fruit fly signage upgrades (Fruit fly signage upgrades needed, March 22) I was making a point about quite simply that. The signage does not say Hundred of Skurray or Murraylands, it simply says Riverland. So in this politically correct world, maybe to clarify the area, then an upgrade should be considered. I WOULD like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you for drawing my name out for the Looking Through A Glass Onion competition. The show was amazing and despite being amongst the youngest in the crowd, I loved every minute of it. John Waters is an incredible actor, singer and entertainer. Shop around for fighting styles WHEN it comes to learning karate, cheaper fees definitely do not mean you get taught less. In fact, you can actually be taught more. Cheaper fees can often mean more people can enjoy a fighting style. Make sure you check fighting styles around the Riverland for prices before joining a fighting style and understand that all fighting styles aren’t for everyone. In the region you will find there are instructors that have been teaching fighting styles much longer than others, meaning they have more experience in a particular style. It is important to note that there is discipline and respect in all styles of fighting. Some fighting style instructors get paid for teaching and charge a lot of money to teach lessons and money is taken out of the Riverland, whereas some styles charge less and use local community businesses for services.

Searching for ancestors I AM trying to find out about my ancestry/relations that went to Australia before 1852. Several, if not all four brothers, emigrated to Australia, apparently all tricking the shipping lines by signing on as crew and deserting when the ship reached Australia, a common practice in those days. Ships were often stranded for weeks or months before they could muster a crew to sail on. Some, or all, of the Tolhursts settled near Renmark on the Murray River in South Australia. Here are some details that I know: • Thomas Frederick was born at St Mary Cray on October 30, 1852. He went to Australia before 1852 as an Orient Line steward and then deserted. He may have been a butcher. His wife left him in about 1890 and he died about 1930.

More fruit seized at roadblock PIRSA will consider handing out more expiation notices to motorists who illegally carry fruit into the Riverland after 135 kilograms was seized at the Blanchetown roadblock over two days at Easter. The large seizure of fruit over Easter follows 180 kilograms illegally detected at the roadblock over the Adelaide Cup long weekend. It has also been revealed that just three of the 103 drivers caught bringing fruit illegally into the Blanchetown roadblock over that long weekend were issued with an expiation notice. Biosecurity SA compliance manager Mark Langman said the Blanchetown random roadblock operated last Thursday and Good Friday, inspecting nearly 700 vehicles. “Nearly three quarters, 72 per cent, carried no fruit at all, of

BRAD PERRY those that did, 64 per cent had a valid receipt,” he said. A total of 69 cars were reported for bringing fruit illegally into a quarantine zone. “I think in this case we probably will be issuing a few more expiation notices because there’s been the additional publicity,” Mr Langman said. “On a really positive note, 100 per cent of Riverland vehicles came through okay.” Mr Langman said less expiation notices are being given out due to various regulations. “The problem with issuing expiations is that there is a clause in the Expiation of Offences Act that allows people to be let off on what’s considered to be a trivial

offence,” he said. “So we’ve got to be a bit careful with writing out our expiations because it costs us money each time we write one out and if they get overturned because they are considered trivial, it’s just a waste of money on our part.” The Blanchetown roadblock was forced to close early following dangerous weather conditions on Friday. The message is getting through with more people carrying receipts for fruit purchases, according to Mr Langman. “So many more people were bringing their receipts in and there was also a large number that didn’t bring in anything at all,” he said. Member for Chaffey Tim Whetstone said it does not appear as if the fruit fly message is getting through to people in Adelaide. “Their random roadblock

program is capturing the culprits but the message is not getting through to people not to bring fruit into the region,” he said. “The government continues to ignore the source of the problem and that is that people are buying fruit in Adelaide and bringing it up to the region. “They (the State Government) need to send a clear message that it won’t be tolerated, people will be pulled over, they will have their fruit confiscated and be issued an on-the-spot fine. “I am told that people shrug their shoulders and go we didn’t know or we didn’t understand. “Are the signs not big enough?” Over the Easter period a large amount of fruit was also seized at the Yamba roadblock with 225 kilograms on Thursday, 323 on Friday, 203 on Saturday, 169 on Sunday and 374 on Monday detected.

Security camera idea to stop shack thefts A BLANCHETOWN shack owner is taking matters into his own hands in an attempt to stop the continued break-ins and theft at local holiday getaways. Over the past 18 months, Blanchetown and other River Murray towns and areas such as Swan Reach and Walker Flat have been targeted by thieves. Blanchetown business and shack owner Allan Smith is awaiting Mid Murray Council approval to install a security camera in the town’s shack area to record motor vehicle licence plates. “There’s obviously a lot of concern about it and it has been happening more and more regularly over the past 12 to 18 months,” he said. “I came up with the concept to put a security camera on the entrance into the shack area. “Our shack area in Blanchetown has one road in and one road out, so we can monitor vehicles, that’s the most secure way we can track whose coming here.”

■ PROTECTION: Shacks and houseboats along the River Murray are continually being targeted by criminals. About 60 shack owners and concerned residents gathered for a meeting on Sunday where the thefts were a strong talking point and the general consensus supported the security camera concept. “The obvious thing would be for shacks to have alarms and their own CCTV cameras

but not everyone has done that and we are looking for a way to cover the area at large,” Mr Smith said. “It’s not going to stop a robbery on the night but at least it’s going to deter people and it will track them down if they come in and out.” Mr Smith said there has been a

number of expensive items stolen from shacks along Blanchetown in recent months. “A bloke had his boat taken,” he said. “They filled it up with all the gear, took it down to Adelaide in the trailer and then just burnt the boat and trailer.” A group of locals now patrol the shack area looking for suspicious activity during quieter periods. Last month valuable items including ski boats, jet-skis, boat trailers, life jackets and other boating equipment was taken from shacks along the River Murray.

Upgrade begins on key Renmark Avenue intersections A $5.46 million project to upgrade key intersections along Renmark Avenue will begin this week. Renmark Avenue, which forms part of the Sturt Highway, will be under construction by Adelaide based company Tolmer Roadworks until the project is

completed in September. Improvements to the busy road are expected to deliver smoother, more efficient driving conditions for about 10,200 motorists and truck drivers who pass through the town every day, as well as better safety for local pedestrians.

The Federal Government is contributing funding to the project through the Nation Building Program. Upgrades in Renmark Avenue will include building a one-lane roundabout at the eighteenth street intersection, installation of a ‘seagull island’

in the median strip at the Twentieth Street intersection, a new right turn only lane into Industry Road, widening the central median strip at the Twenty-First Street intersection, realigning its southbound lane and closing the right turn in and out of Twenty-Third Street.

Basin plan concern RIVER communities and food producers continue to be ignored in the Basin Plan debate in South Australia, according to Member for Chaffey Tim Whetstone. “Despite the best efforts of river communities and food producers to engage with the Weatherill Labor Government and environmentalists, their concerns – and the social and economic impact of the Basin Plan – are being ignored,” Mr Whetstone said. Mr Whetstone said a meeting at the Adelaide Town Hall this week did not feature a food producer or a representative of a river community as a speaker.

Berri based producer Kolophon Capers has accepted an invitation to showcase its goods at the four day Noosa International Food and Wine Festival. Kolophon Capers’ Barry Porter said it is a great opportunity to be serving his unique product alongside some of the best gourmet producers and food critics in Australia. “The invitation came out of the blue, it appeared as an email about three weeks ago,” he said. “When I queried how they

got onto us, the organiser said ‘we have heard about your products and we saw your win in the Delicious Magazine Produce Awards last year so we invited you’. “It took Helen and me about 30 seconds to decide we are going.” During the food fair, Mr Porter said he will be doing his bit for the Riverland by promoting local tourism. “All up it really gives us a boost that our quality is being recognised and we are spreading the word that the Riverland is not only bulk citrus and wine, we do produce a lot of gourmet food no-one knows about,” he said. “We are taking up a heap of Riverland food and wine

tourism brochures to put on our stall as well. “We’re quite excited to be going and showing off the region’s produce.” Chefs from across Australia continue to demand the Riverland capers, according to Mr Porter. “Caper leaves are a new line I’ve been experimenting with for about three years and I am finally happy with them,” Mr Porter said. “I put them on the market last year and sold out in two months. “As we expand every year, two or three top chefs come online with our products.” The local caper business began six years ago and has continued to grow ever since.

TOURISM operators across the Riverland and Mallee reported an almost record Easter with thousands of people flocking to the region. The Loxton Riverfront Caravan Park had visitors from across Australia and proprietor Ross Priestley said roughly 600 people would have made the park's facilities their holiday resting point. “Each Easter we're at 100 per cent capacity,” he said. “This year, because of some of some restructuring of the caravan park, we had some additional sites. “Last year we only had onethird of the park available, twothirds was covered in water.” Berri Riverside Caravan Park resident manager Kay Kubenk said many families enjoyed events across the region over Easter. “It's the best thing for the region because they don't just stay here in the park, they travel, they generally go to every Riverland town, they shop, they spend a lot of money and have a good look around,” Mrs Kubenk said. “Quite a lot of them come

back the year after.” Morgan Riverside Caravan Park owner Joanne Schmitt said the park was at top capacity. “We've always been full at the caravan park and the town's been really busy,” Mrs Schmitt said. While there was some concerns prior to Easter that high river levels would effect visitor numbers, Destination Riverland chief executive Tony Sharley said numbers were high.

Broken Hill's Mark Pitt and his family come to the Riverland

regularly for Easter. “The lifestyle and atmosphere are very appealing and the people are very friendly,” he said. “The facilities at the (BIG4 Renmark Riverfront Holiday Park) are fantastic and they're in a safe, friendly environment.” Adelaide's Andy Donnelly made use of the Easter break to take his family to the Riverland Speedway. “We come here to relax in the peace and tranquility,” he said. “We also went to the Berri Easter Parade.” Kadina tourist Sharon Stevens, who stayed at Martin's Bend, has been in the Riverland for two weeks now and plans to return in the future. “I love the river, it's convenient and there's lots of water,” she said. Easter breakfasts across the region reflected the large number of tourists visiting. About 1500 people attended the C.A.P.A. Performance Berri Easter Carnival, close to 1000 were on hand for the Loxton breakfast and a strong crowd of more than 700 people turned out for Renmark’s Easter celebrations.

Citrus board appoints new chairperson By BRAD PERRY RENMARK'S Richard Fewster is hoping to guide local citrus growers through one of the industry's most difficult periods in his newly appointed role. As a former South Australian Citrus Industry Development Board director, Mr Fewster has been accepted as the group's new chairperson, taking over the role from Waikerie's Peter Walker. Mr Fewster said the latest data about new plantings suggests the citrus industry still has a bright future despite the need for a national restructure. “I think there's a big future for the industry and I think if you have a look at the latest data that's been released about new plantings, 13 per cent of the citrus currently in the ground in South Australia is new

plantings,” he said. “There are those who are in a fortunate enough position to have enough money left to replant new varieties that maybe have more appeal in the market place. “There is obviously some people in the industry that despite the tough times, feel as if there is a future.” Mr Fewster has been involved in rural communication and horticultural marketing for the past 35 years and has been a SACIDB director for six years. Having a single body for the Australian citrus industry would be more beneficial, according to Mr Fewster. “It's a period where it will be interesting for the industry with what's going on with the review here given that the Federal Government is investigating Citrus

Australia, given that Riverina Citrus is no longer and my personal view is that it is time for the industry to stand back and take a real deep breath and have a real good look at itself and what it wants,” he said. “There needs to be one structure but there also needs to be, I think, a complete review of the national structure. “The fact that Citrus Australia was formed in 2008 and it has still only attracted 10 per cent of the citrus growers in Australia, I think its time for them to stand back and have a real good look and see why they are not getting the numbers.” The State Government has appointed new board members including Sunlands grower Joel Sheehan, Liteisha Lochert, Waikerie’s Carole Walker and David Arnold.

Lyrup’s Betty Lloyd and Helen Aggeletos are continuing Board directors. The new look board will conduct its first meeting next week.

Market recovers from break-ins By BRAD PERRY A RECORD Easter attendance at the Riverland Farmers’ Market in Berri has gone a long way in helping the event recover from a break-in last month, which saw more than $2000 stolen. Callous thieves targeted the market office at the Berri Senior Citizens’ Hall, stealing a large amount of community money from the event. Food Riverland chairperson Dave Benda said the market had just worked itself into a positive position after an uncertain future when the money was stolen last

month. “After six months, we had just got our head above water and that money was putting us back into a good trading position and of course what that (the break-in) meant was we then had to call on reserves that Food Riverland holds to pay back people from the co-op whose money we were holding on their behalf,� he said. “We’ve had break-ins in the past and they’ve never got a thing because we felt that we were pretty secure.� Mr Benda said a decision to remove cash from the prem-

ises paid off when thieves again broke into the hall over the Easter weekend but this time left empty handed. “They broke in through the office window and they were purely looking for money and didn’t touch anything else,� Mr Benda said. “The really disappointing thing from our point of view is that it is a community offering that volunteers run and to have someone break-in not once but twice, trying to get what people are trying to do for the community, is really disappointing.� Security procedures by Food

Sandra’s prize pumpkin By CALLUM TRIFONOFF PARINGA woman Sandy Kernich will embark on her first overseas journey when she travels to the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival in the USA later in the year. Mrs Kernich won Saturday’s biggest pumpkin at the Cadell Harvest Festival, giving her a place at the renowned American event which will take place in October. Her massive pumpkin weighed in at 162 kilograms. “It’s pretty amazing to come away with the win, especially since it’s my first time taking part,� she said. “It’s all been a bit of fun, we’re all fruit growers so it’s something different for us.� Mrs Kernich said very little maintenance was required to grow the giant pumpkin. “It’s had a good dose of blood and bone and a lot of area for it to grow,� she said. “They grow so fast too and it’s been amazing to see how they grow overnight� While Mrs Kernich said the prospect of going overseas for the first time will be nerve-wracking, it is something she is delighted to be doing. “For me, it’ll be a good chance to look around and see how the sizes of pumpkins are over in America.�

Mrs Kernich finished ahead of Kieran Myers, Alyce Black and Dennis Nitschke to win the award. Cadell Harvest Festival organiser Kevin Myers was delighted with the turnout at the event, which saw over 2000 people attend. “The weather was great, the crowds were just great and there were lots and lots of families,� he said. “It’s growing every year.�

With the event already attracting 420 entries, with more expected, Saturday and Sunday's event is expected to be larger than the last time it was held in the region in 2006. Big River Nationals event manager Graham Matthews said with several car enthusiast and family orientated activities scheduled, there is something for everyone. “There will be an array of vehicles, from hot rods to customs classics, muscle cars, street machines, special interest vehicles up to 1972,� Mr Matthews said.

“That's when cars didn't all look alike, they all had their own character and appeal in those early years.� While it is unlikely the nationals will become anything other than an event held every six years, Mr Matthews is nevertheless hopeful. “In reality, according to our national organisation, the Australian Street Rod Federation, it should be on a sixyearly cycle,� he said. “However, my dream is to make it a biennial event.� Among the most anticipated cars to be involved with the nationals is the Australian Street Rod Federation's $80,000 1932 Ford Coupe, which will be a raffle prize, the Willys Nationals and the Hot Rod Olympics. Proceedings take place from 10am in Barmera.

Brad’s road to recovery B

RAD Mules slowly opened his eyes in a kind of daze. He was in a bed in the Royal Adelaide Hospital with restricted movement from the neck down. The last thing he remembered was playing around on his laptop and feeling tired and unwell. During the night of January 15, Brad slipped into an unconscious state and while he was in an awkward sleeping position it caused a lack of oxygen to his brain resulting in swelling. Along with an unusually high white blood cell count, the prognosis was not good. Two-and-a-half weeks later, Brad had just come out of a coma. Against the odds, Brad is well into the process of regaining his life back. n all smiles: Loxton’s Brad Mules has fought hard to regain his life after falling into a coma. That fateful night LIVING a short drive away from the River Murray, one of Brad’s favourite social outings is hanging out by the water with his friends. On Sunday afternoon, January 15, Brad and a group of friends, many who he had recently tasted premiership success with in the Riverland Football League, spent time down the river. For Brad, there seemed to be nothing unusual about this Sunday, conversation about life flowed. Upon returning to his Loxton home, Brad found himself social networking on his laptop. It was then he felt tired with a headache and decided to go to bed for an early night. The following morning he never woke.

Holding out hope AMID panic and concern from his family, Brad was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital unconscious. On arrival he was taken into intensive care where he would spend two-and-a-half weeks in a coma. He suffered from kidney failure, high blood pressure and small strokes to the brain. With his mother Vicki by his side, the Mules family was forced to wait for Brad to wake and told to fear the worst. Word spread across the Riverland that Brad was hospitalised and support began flowing in from far and wide with hundreds of visits and messages posted on social networking site Facebook. “I got told that they only got five minutes in ICU because there was just that many lining up, two at a time for five minutes,” Brad said. “I was pretty amazed when I heard that.” The Mules family decided to keep a signing book for the people that visited and the messages were later used as inspiration for Brad. “When I read that, it was just amazing the number of people that came into see me and people would come in four times a week,” he said. “Some people that I wasn’t good mates with would just come in to see how I was doing and they were also praying for me.”

Waking from a coma THE Mules family played the waiting game hoping that Brad would wake. Then a miracle happened and Brad opened his eyes. “When I first woke up I was a bit dazed, I was like ‘where am I?’” he said. “When the doctors came in to see me for the first time, they were like ‘do you know where you are? What’s your name? What’s your date of birth?’ “The day I woke up, I’d thought that I’d woken up before that and that was scary thing. “Mum didn’t tell me after the first day and one of my mates came in and he said you were out for two -and-a-half weeks and I was like ‘really?’ “I had no idea, I thought it was a night’s sleep.” Waking up was just the beginning of a long battle to regain health with Brad losing almost 20 kilograms. “They thought it was a likely chance I wasn’t going to wake up and once I did they were pretty amazed and my kidneys started getting better and I only just had high blood pressures,” he said. “My blood pressure was up in excess of 240 and I was sweating and I had a sweat rash across my shoulders and my chest and my face, everywhere. “When I woke up from ICU I couldn’t move my arms that well.” Tests proved inconclusive and doctors still could not diagnose the cause of Brad’s medical problems.

Long road to recovery

Currently he is participating in physio, occupational therapy, speech therapy, hydrotherapy, fitness, exercise and running groups. “The first week there I got assessed and they had goals for me and it’s rare that a person meets all of their goals in the first few weeks,” Brad said. “When I cleared my first set of goals I had to get a new set of goals, so I was pretty happy about that. “What made rehab heaps easier was that I was physically fit before hand and I’m young.” Brad has spent the past two months at Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre during the week and recently started to return home to Loxton on the weekends.

WITH support from his family, friends and the Riverland community, Brad gained feeling in his left side and following his release from the Intensive Care unit, began the long road to recovery. “Pretty much my whole right side was non responsive,” Brad said. “Then I went to rehab and I have been getting better each week. “I just want to get back to work and live a normal life again.” Brad’s continued drive to reach rehabilitation goals has seen him beat just about every obstacle put in front of him. Due to a lack of mobility, initially Brad moved around in a mobilised wheelchair, he then regained enough movement to use a walking frame and is now in the early stages of walking independently.

Coming home POTENTIALLY less than a month away from returning home for good, Brad has learnt to appreciate the little things in life and take nothing for granted. While he knows returning to full physical health may be years away, Brad is hoping to play sport again as soon as possible. This season he will watch his beloved Loxton North football team from the sidelines as he longs to join the team on the field. “I’m pretty keen to train and get the last B grade game and if not, get back into basketball straight away,” he said. In fact, despite missing the last five games of the season, Brad was awarded Loxton’s division one basketball

While Brad works hard to get himself into physical shape to play sport again, he is taking it one step at a time. “I’ve learnt to appreciate the smaller things like buttering toast is really hard,” he laughed. “I appreciate just being able to walk.” The community has again rallied behind Brad and has organised a fundraising event called Benefit 4 Broccoli Brad to be held on April 21 at the Loxton North Sporting Club. While there is no doubt the support from the Riverland community been a contributing factor in Brad’s recovery, for now he is just looking forward to being home in the region that he loves with his family and friends by his side.

Famous kelpie at farm fair THE FAMOUS and lovable Kelpie who appeared in the award winning movie Red Dog will make a grand appearance at this month’s Kapunda Farm Fair. Street trees standing strong across the Riverland and Mallee: Part two

B

RACHYCHITON populneus kurrajong is a multipurpose tree, in that the seeds can be eaten once roasted and is valuable stock fodder. Its fresh green leaves can make the hottest street appear cool and inviting. It has cream bell flowers followed by boat shaped pods. Wilson Street in Berri used to be full of this tree, however many were cut down in 1998 because they ‘dropped leaves’. Fortunately some on the west end of Wilson Street still remain and can give you an idea of what a wonderful shady street this used to be. Casuarina pauper, black oak, can be slow growing to start with but becomes a very permanent tree with highly valuable timber and has leaves that are actually modified stems (the true leaves are reduced to minute ‘teeth’). The fine foliage makes the most restful sound with any sort of breeze. An old original can be seen between Berri and Glossop on a bend

at the junction of Old Sturt Highway and Hardwick Road. Eucalyptus brockwayii, Dundas mahogany, is a Western Australian upright tree with a clean bronze trunk and shining leaves. A good example can be seen in the medium strip just over the Paringa Bridge, on the Paringa side. E. leucoxylon megalocarpa, large fruited SA blue gum, is a particularly densely crowned tree with masses of red flowers in autumn and winter. It usually has a clean white trunk. A good example can be seen on Tanko Street, Loxton. You will know it when you see it as it has such a dense crown, which is unmistakable. Geijera parviflora, wilga, is quite a common tree to the north and east of the Riverland and Mallee but is almost unknown here. It is widely planted as a street tree in California and is called the Australian Willow. I was delighted to see it used as a street tree in Wilmington, SA. Its fine drooping leaves and cool

appearance would make a street well worth living in. A good example can be seen on a property on the south west corner of the junction of Old Sturt Highway and Jellett Road in Berri. Santalum acuminatum, quandong, could also be used as a fruiting street tree. It has a weeping habit and is quite a sturdy little tree. This street tree has almost become a plant of mystery as it can be difficult to establish but very hardy once it is. The tree itself is beautiful; particularly with fruit that is quite clean and dry. I can imagine the wonder of a street in full, bright, red ripe fruit. We, as a community, have no excuse not to have leafy, green, inviting and cool streets. With our climate of more sunshine than the Sunshine Coast, we probably have greater need for a high degree of street amenity. So you now have part of my list, add to it and start planting. As the Chinese say, the best time to plant a tree was 50 years ago, the second best time is now.

OR those that follow these features on a regular basis, you may have wondered where we have gone in 2012. Unfortunately the Renmark to the Border LAP have decided not continue with the joint LAP feature, so the Berri Barmera LAP and Riverland West Landcare Group will now be producing a feature every two months instead, where we will keep you updated on a range of projects and opportunities from Berri to Blanchetown. For those who don’t know, Riverland West LAP recently changed its name to Riverland West Landcare, and under this banner will continue to work with the community and landholder groups to protect, restore and enhance the natural assets in their area. Both Paul and Karen have been kept busy in the last couple of months developing a range of funding applications for 2012/13 and we should be able to report on the outcome of these in our next feature in June. We are currently enjoying the second major flow event within a couple years and this will prove very beneficial to our wetlands and floodplains. In particular, it will provide a welcome drink to the thousands of gum trees which germinated after the flood event in late 2010/2011. If there is anything in these features that you want to know more about, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Paul at Berri or Karen at Waikerie.

A RECENT visit to Illalangi on the Sturt Highway, east of Waikerie, proved to be a hit with the Youth Environment Team (YET) and Ramco Environment Group (REG). The interpretive Indigenous Garden has been sponsored by Riverland West Landcare, who received funding through the DENR 2010-11 State NRM Community Grants Program.

Keryn Gorman, owner of Illalangi, gave the students a tour of the garden, explaining what each plant is and what its uses are. Although the plants are still quite small, it is hoped that the continuing warm weather will give the plants a real head start for the opening of the garden. Both the YET and REG kids will be involved with the offi-

cial launch of the garden which is set to take place in mid to late May. In the meantime, they are busy helping design plant tags and propagating indigenous native seeds which they hope will be ready in time for the launch. The group ended their visit after being treated to a tasting table of Illalangi products in-

cluding saltbush dukka, Tanami apple and chilli jam, olive pesto and much more. The kids were genuinely interested in trying all the different types of food on sample and are especially keen to get more involved with the project. Illalangi is located at 12915 Sturt Highway, Waikerie, for anyone interested in calling in to have a look at the garden.

area and how to deal with them. The interpretive Indigenous Garden - Situated at Illalangi on the Sturt Highway in Waikerie, the garden will be officially opened in mid to late May. Wetland works at Loveday and Overland Corner AS we eluded to in our last feature, the Berri Barmera LAP has secured funding to undertake a range of projects at Loveday and Overland Corner. At Loveday, a suite of works have been undertaken just before the river levels rose, to prevent scouring and erosion around most of the regulating structures dotting the wetland complex. Funding for this work was provided by the SA Murray Darling Basin NRM Board ($10,000) and the SA Field and Game Association and the Field and Game Federation of Australia each donated $5000 towards the project, recognising the important contribution members of the Barmera-Moorook field and game association have made to managing these wetlands for over 25 years. At Overland Corner, the SA MDB NRM Board has provided in the order of $64,000 to replace the existing stop-logs on the regulating structure with full sized aluminium sluice gates and installing pumping infrastructure to enable inundation of the wetland during periods of no more than entitlement flow.

The sluice gates will ensure that when the wetland is managed to prolong a period of inundation, either naturally or by pumping, water is not “lost” through the regulator as has happened previously with the stop logs. The pumping infrastructure is a very exciting opportunity, as not only was Overland Corner one of the first wetlands to have water pumped into it during the drought but now be-

comes the first wetland in SA to have a dedicated permanent pumping setup which will enable the local community to manage the wetland in a way which mimics natural cycles. Its just a little strange to be implementing this project at a time when the wetland is full of water naturally, though we are certain to receive extended periods of low flow in the future, and when it happens, the Overland Corner wetland will be ready!

Working with the community to support the local environment

War on Weeds THE Ramco Wetland Management Group (RWMG) has had the removal of boxthorn and prickly pear from the north western end of the lagoon on their wish list for quite some time. Last year it was fortunate to receive funding through the DENR State NRM Community Grants Program to have the weeds removed. However, it was only recently that the work was able to be undertaken due to restricted access during the high water event and waiting for the right conditions to deal with the prickly pear. Members from the RWMG and community volunteers worked together to cut and swab and manually pull boxthorn using chains and a vehicle, from just over a hectare of floodplain adjacent to Ramco lagoon. Riverland Rural Solutions was contracted to spray the

prickly pear due to its size and location which the group decided was too difficult for its volunteers to attempt. After only a week, the visible effects of the spraying were very obvious with most of the plants showing signs of die back. Karen Bishop, Project Officer for Riverland West Landcare, said it was a fantastic effort from all those involved. “We were even able to get a work crew from the Cadell Training Centre to assist with the manual removal with all bar a few large boxthorns being eradicated,” she said. “The larger ones will have to wait until we can apply a foliar spray in May or June but this again will depend on water levels which determine if we can actually access the site.”

Upcoming Events With high water levels, most community wetland monitoring is on hold until the floodplain is accessible again. There will be some limited opportunities for community members to assist (probably during working hours) with monitoring in waders, or by boat or kayak. Connecting children with a fishy environment THE Berri Barmera LAP Committee, in conjunction with PIRSA Fisheries and the SA MDB NRM Board, are in the process of developing an exciting new project with the students and staff at Winkie Primary School to educate students about native fish and their habitat in the Riverland. This project will teach students about native and alien fish in wetlands, techniques to manage alien fish and the benefits of doing so, and the importance of natural habitats. Regular monitoring will also form a core part of students’ learning, as well as teaching them about recreational fishing and the importance of sustainability. It is expected that components of what students learn through this project will also be incorporated into other areas of the curriculum and it is seen as a positive way to engage students in both their leaning and with the natural environment.

Biological control agents hard at work THE Waikerie Primary School Youth Environment Team (YET) has been targeting an area of bridal creeper at Maize Island for just over three years. Each year the YET breed leaf hoppers through the SA MDB NRM Board Weed Warriors program and release them as biological control agents on site. A recent visit to last year’s release site has shown some very positive results in terms of the amount of dead bridal creeper. Riverland West Landcare Project Officer , Karen

Bishop said the total area targeted is in the vicinity of 1500 m² with over 80 percentof the bridal creeper now dead. This season the YET will target the remaining outbreaks and they hope to have just as much success this year as they have in the past. RFL official admits to lack of criteria on Anzac Medal vote THE Riverland Football League Commission’s decision to remove the Chas Gardner and Norm Kassulke names from Anzac Day medals was a subject on last weekend’s 5RM Sports Saturday program. The fact that the adding of names to these traditional annual awards in 2011 was an initiative of the Returned and Services League (SA Branch) in conjunction with the SA National Football League and that the proposal was generally accepted and embraced by football leagues and netball associations across the state was raised and it was explained that the following criteria had applied.

The persons whose names were to be attached to the medals were to have reflected the spirit of Anzac in their lifetime and to have displayed those ideals as citizens in their contribution to their community and the people around them. Names decided upon close to home were Chas Gardner and Norm Kassulke for our local football, Geoff Blacket in the Mallee, Marg Lambert and Audrey Hefford for Riverland netball and Sister FR Casson for Mallee netball. It should be emphasised that in the criteria laid down by the RSL for the naming of the medals, there

At Berri, stableford competitions were held on Saturday and Sunday with Mark Wilksch interrupting his preparation for another local football season as one of our leading field umpires to win on both days. the week, while on Easter Monday Lyn Smith took out a Bisque Par competition on a count back from Kelvin L’estrange, both finishing on plus one. At Waikerie on Saturday in a stroke competition, Derek Greenfield with a score of 73/64 won division one with division two going to Peter Richardson, 92/70. Shane Quinn 81/69, Peter Ewen 105/70, Graham Walters 100/71 took home vouchers. At Renmark last Wednesday Paul Wilton with 41 points won a stableford from Markos Stavrou, 39, and on Saturday Annette Thiel with 96/74 won a stroke event ahead of Colin Hyde, 80/71.

Players invited to nominate for hockey champs PLAYERS are being encouraged to nominate in the male and female under 15 and under 18 categories to represent the Riverland and Barossa teams at the annual Junior Zone Hockey Championships over the June long weekend. Barmera windsurfer hopeful of competing in Africa after invite LAST week we broke the news that Barmera Windsurfer Anthony Hamood has been invited to a major world event at Namibia, in Africa, next November titled the Luderitz Speed Challenge. Of the opportunity, Hamood, if not the only Australian targeted for the event certainly one of few, said, “I would love to get to Africa but my work and the cost of the trip will make it difficult”. Our last article referred to Hamood’s best ever speed of 47 knots achieved at Beachport’s Lake George recently and it is interesting to reflect on the result he may be capable of at Luderitz, a site established for the purpose of breaking records. In the first year of the Luderitz Speed Challenge in 2007 on a curved course, the top speed was only 44 knots.

Since then, with the digging of channels and use of sand bags to create a dam and also the building of a canal, the speed has climbed in a short time to some 56 knots. Lake George has provided great conditions for our windsurfers but they still have to drag themselves and their gear through the difficult terrain to reach their starting points. That can be pretty exhausting work and is far removed from the competitors in Namibia who are transported in relative comfort to the start of their runs. So what really could our Barmera man be capable of should he make it to the Luderitz event where both the conditions, provided by nature and improvements added by organisers, offer competitors the very best opportunity to travel real fast?

Of course you have to appreciate that Hamood has a lot of matters to consider before he undertakes such a trip but his performances suggest that if some doors were to open for him to be in Namibia in November he would do himself and the Riverland proud.

THREE nights in a row of speedway at Riverland tracks over Easter provided good crowds with non-stop action, not all of it out on the track. Lightning Sprints competed over all of the meetings for their Easter Triple Treat and it ended up being a big result for local driver Jason Wilson driving the Lee Payne car. Jason won his first ever feature race in the final stage at Waikerie’s Sunline track on Sunday and that gave him enough points to claim the series overall. But it was not without controversy as after the Sunline feature, there was heated debate in the judges’ box after the race relating to a passing move Wilson performed on Luke Lindsay. However, the result was allowed to stand. Second in the series was Jordan Barrow and third Luke Lindsay with the hard luck story belonging to Sam Chapman, who broke a 10 lap record that had stood since 2003 in the opening round at Sunline on Good Friday but was unable to proceed to the feature race because of damage to his vehicle. Melissa Crouch won the feature on Friday night at Waikerie ahead of Barrow and Wilson and Saturday at the Riverland Club’s Calperum Hill track, the placings went Mark Sheen, Wilson, Barrow. The major event for Waikerie over the weekend was Sunday’s South Australian AMCA Championship where current Australian champion Campbell Hughes held off a quality field, that included three current state title holders, to win the 30 lap main event ahead of Victoria’s Tim Reidy and Darren McCarthy.

Maris Valodze, fourth, was the best of the SA entrants in an event where only 10 of the eighteen starters reached the finish line after three others had been unable to take their places in the feature because of mechanical problems. There were a number of caution periods in the feature and each time Hughes was able to get a good jump in the restart and establish a lead that proved handy in the end. Formula 500s ran at both Sunline meetings with Ross Miller putting a mistake in the heats on Friday behind him to win the feature from Chris Brooks and Joe Mercorella. Then on Sunday Angelo Karousis smashed the existing 12 lap record by nine seconds and took out the feature from Damien Eve and Mercorella. Eve had earlier set a new eight lap record in heat two. Also at Waikerie, round four of the Wingless Sprints series was held with 17 cars involved and new Australian champion Todd Wigzell taking out the feature from Joel Chadwick and Cody Atkins. At the Riverland track on Saturday night, SA number two Keke Falland won the inaugural Chris Evans 360 Sprints title with Brendan Guerin and Daniel Evans filling the minor placings. Also the burnouts was won by Peter Lehmann from Jess Heywood, the Cardboard Car Cup taken out by Jack Gartner from Lachlan Slingo and Jenna Ellis and in the Figure 8 Race, Zak Butterworth survived best to beat Dion Holland and Mikayla Hein, thrilling the holiday crowd of some 1200. A big and spectacular fireworks display also added to a great night of entertainment.

Timely reminder about a legendary Test A RECENT segment during coverage of the New Zealand versus South Africa Test cricket series illustrated why timeless Tests became a thing of the past. The fifth Test was a match of no fixed duration between South Africa and England at Kingsmead, Durban, in 1938/39 and it started on Friday March 3 and finished on Tuesday March 14 – but still ended in a draw. The home captain, Alan Melville, decided to bat first when he broke English skipper Wally Hammond’s run of winning eight coin tosses in a row. South Africa certainly joined in the spirit of a timeless Test in its first innings, amassing 530 from 203 six-ball overs before being dismissed on day three. In reply, England struggled to 316 from 118 overs and when its innings closed on the fifth day, the English trailed by 216 runs. Despite that, the host country did not enforce the follow-on and with opening batsman Pieter Van Der Bijl adding 97 to his first innings of 125, South Africa batted for another 142 overs for a total of 481 and an overall lead of 695. England only faced one ball before stumps were drawn on day six, the day when the visitors’ ship Athlone Castle had expected the players to board for the journey home but instead it sailed without them, steaming down the east coast to Cape Town. That meant the English party faced a two day 1000 mile train journey to catch up with their ship in Cape Town in time for its departure for England. Day seven and a stubborn England reached 1 for 253. After bad light had stopped play every day so far, day eight was washed out completely. On day nine, the visitors’ resistance continued to 3 for 496 when light again interfered late in proceedings. Rain at tea the following day saw England only 42 runs from victory at 5 for 654 but that was effectively the end of the marathon contest. The Englishmen simply had to catch their train to allow them not to miss their boat. There was some talk about the two not out batsmen, Les Ames on 17 and Bryan Valentine on 4, and the four still to bat Verity, Wright, Farnes and Perks, staying behind for an eleventh day and then chartering a plane to Cape Town. But in the end the whole party boarded the train, meaning that a contest that saw 1981 runs scored, 35 wickets fall in 5463

Batsman Bill Edrich, 22, promoted from number five to number three for the final English innings, turned out the surprise packet in the unlikely run chase. After he had scored only 22 runs in his previous six innings, Edrich was a shock selection in the team but his 219 together with 120 from Paul Gibb and 140 from Hammond had put his side within sight of victory. Mind you it was rumoured Edrich’s obvious replacement, in-form Hugh Bartlett, had not been in Hammond’s good books as he had earlier moved in on a lass the skipper had his eye on. And there was controversy over

Edrich’s dismissal. He accepted two celebratory champagnes at tea time and was promptly out in the next over. After the game was declared a draw, there was conflicting ‘what could have been’ claims from the two camps. England felt they would have scored the 42 runs required comfortably. On the other hand, these were the days of uncovered pitches and the South Africans felt that even though on previous days rain followed by rolling had restored the wicket to pristine condition, the wet weather would now make it unplayable and enable its bowlers to wrap the innings up quickly.

Saturday night actually concluded a successful Riverland season and satisfied club president Greg Haynes was quick to acknowledge the support given to local speedway by the club’s sponsors and loyal fans. Sunline will roll on however and the next Waikerie meeting is on Saturday May 19, featuring the Steve Butcher Memorial for Street Stocks. A huge program will also include Late Models, Modified Sedans, AMCAs, Wingless Sprints, Super Sedans, Lightning Sprints, Junior Sedans and at the end, the popular Figure 8 Jump race. Off Road racing season begins THE Off Road season starts this Sunday at Mannum on the Haby property with round one of both the SAORRA Multi Club Series and the State Championships. After a dominating 2011, the Haby Brothers, Aaron and Carl, hardly need a home ground advantage first up but the Waikerie Riverland Club will have drivers like James Copeland, Lindsay Foster and John Schultz doing their utmost to prevent a lightning start by the talented duo. In fact, 2012 looks like a season of change for off road racing both in this state and across Australia as amendments to various stipulations and disputes over merchandising and filming rights take effect on programming. The races at Hyden in WA and Baroota in SA have gone as Australian Championship events, while there is some concern amongst clubs that the overall racing calendar is now out of balance. Also at national level, the sensational news is that organisers of the iconic Finke Desert Race are disappointed that the event has been replaced by the Sea Lake Mallee Rally as a round of the Australian Championships. The Finke race will still go ahead with drivers now needing to choose between an icon event and the national championship series over the June long weekend. While the Finke organisers are less than happy that their race was pulled out of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport due to a dispute over merchandising and filming rights, the Sea Lake event has been upgraded with the Victorian club happy to be celebrating by hosting the first round of the Australian Off Road championship in the 39th year of the Mallee Rally. It is reported that many of the top operators, including the successful Peter Kittle Racing Team, will turn their backs on the Australian series this season and compete at Finke. Another example is our own Brad Gallard with his Geiser Bros USA Trophy Truck to return in an attempt to conquer the desert again and he will be well prepared. His regular navigator Scott Modistach has just spent time at the Geiser factory in USA and Rick Geiser will be with Brad at Alice Springs. Geoff Roe’s outstanding performance last year will also see him back to take the next step after leading last year with just kilometres to go.

BERRI’S RISING STAR By CALLUM TRIFONOFF BERRI’S Taso Bantolas is one of the Riverland’s brightest up and coming sporting talents. While baseball is his main passion, like many other local juniors, Bantolas also loves playing football in the winter with the Berri Demons. With the baseball season completed for 2012, Taso can reflect on a very successful year. As well as playing in a premiership with the Berri Warriors’ under 15s in the Riverland Baseball Association, the 11-year-old had an outstanding season in Adelaide. He played for the Port Adelaide District under 12s where he also won a premiership and was named in the top four best

players in the team. In his sixth year of playing junior baseball, Bantolas believes being named in the top four best players for Port Adelaide is his biggest individual feat. “I’m really proud of myself,” he said. “There’s a lot of good players playing for Port so it’s a good achievement. “In Adelaide, it’s good fun to play and down here (in the Riverland), it’s actually more of a challenge.” Bantolas is currently being coached by American David Manzella and Bantolas’ father Harry said the experienced guidance has helped his son improve. ■ Continued Page 25

NEW Renmark hockey coach Brett Stokes starts his busy 2012 season when he departs to Thailand and Malaysia this Sunday. Stokes is the assistant coach with the Australian Senior Country Men’s team for the overseas tour, which finishes on April 29. In his first stint as senior coach for a Hockey Australia team, Stokes will be part of a hectic itinerary with his time in Thailand involving matches against Singapore, Thailand and Kazakhstan and a Pool A team up until Sunday, April 22. Then the team will play in Malaysia against the national under 21 squad over three days at Malacca and against the state side in Kuala Lumpur. A women’s team undertakes the same itinerary. Along the way there will be a number of training sessions as well but there will be some opportunities to climb out of the hockey gear and dress up a bit for a Presidential Dinner in Bangkok at the end of a rest day. Stokes will also undertake a couple of tours in Malacca and enjoy a Tour Dinner the night before returning from Kuala Lumpur to the Riverland. He will also interrupt his coaching and mentoring role with Renmark to coach the South Australian Men’s team at the Australian Country Championships in Bendigo from July 29 to August 4. Meanwhile, a lack of player numbers and the early staging of the Senior Country SA Championships in Adelaide this weekend has resulted in the Riverland not being able to field a team this year. However officials are hoping the holding of the tournament will spark interest for the 2013 championships. The local Riverland season commences on May 6.
