Riverland residents raise concerns over door-to-door sales

RIVERLAND residents have raised concerns over door-to-door salesmen during a visit by South Australia’s Energy and Water Ombudsman last week. The major concerns focused around electricity salesmen with a number of residents stating they felt pressured into accepting deals.

BRAD PERRY Ombudsman Sandy Canale said issues were raised with the independent service during last week’s two
day visit to the region. “In some cases customers were confused about the offers that were being presented to them, in other situations they felt pressured to take some sort of action and in some situations it had resulted in a transfer to a new retailer without their explicit, informed consent,� he said.
Mr Canale said the increase of complaints in the sales and marketing category, which includes doorto-door salesmen, rose by 40 per cent across South Australia in the last financial year. Residents are entitled to ask the salesman to leave if they are not comfortable, according to Mr Canale.

THE 18th Renmark Rose Festival, which begins tomorrow, will be bigger than ever this year with almost 50 attractions and 22 open gardens across the Riverland. Thousands of people are expected to travel to Renmark over the 10 day event, with an official opening at the Jarrett Memorial Gardens on Saturday. Renmark Rose Festival committee chairperson Miriam McLean said accommodation across the district is “practically full�. “When I rang around about two or three weeks ago there were a few of the odd days in the middle of the week left but other than that they were full,� she said. “It helps with our economy and also it helps businesses, not only accommodation but meals and all the shops are so much busier.� The busy schedule for this year’s festival includes highlights such as the annual floral display at the Renmark Institute, a cabaret performance at the Renmark Hotel, a candlelit supper at Olivewood, David Ruston’s floral demonstra-

AFTER the events that have unfolded over the past fortnight involving Facebook gossip pages, it is clear that more needs to be done to address this issue. Facebook pages, which have now mostly been taken down, were created called ‘Burn
tions, Plummer’s Nursery tour, the introduction of new winegrape varieties, a fashion parade at the Renmark Plaza and the Light the Night event as the closing ceremony. There will also be 22 open gardens this year, four more than 2011, with locations in Renmark, Lyrup, Berri and Loxton. Mrs McLean said people from across Australia will travel to the region for the festival. “We’ve got 20 buses coming which is good,� she said. “We have to have new attractions to encourage the visitors into the Riverland and you can’t have the same old thing year after year so we’ve got to introduce new things.� The roses will be out in full bloom by mid-week, according to Mrs McLean. “They will be in full bloom at the beginning of the rose festival,� she said. It is understood that three out of the four Riverland high schools featured on these pages. Upon hearing of these ‘Burn Books’ I decided to search Facebook and have a look for myself. Some of the things I read
were disgusting and extremely inappropriate in any context. This was flat out bullying. It appears that on one of the pages, the person who had created it never thought anyone would be interested. To me it seems that those people that became involved in this saga were unaware of the consequences of their actions.

“I thought I was going to die” WELL known Paringa woman Kaylene Letton broke five ribs and suffered a serious ankle injury in a terrifying incident in which she thought she was going to die when a pet sheep attacked her. The popular Riverland Farmers’ Market identity and mother of Glen View Poultry Farm owner Darren ‘Chook’ Letton was rushed to the Flinders Hospital in Adelaide for surgery following the incident on Friday. Mr Letton said his mother had gone to round up her 10 pet sheep when one unexpectedly attacked her when her back was turned. “It rammed her from behind and she was about 200 metres away from anyone,” he said. “It knocked her down flat and it just kept going at her, bunting her and jumping on her and she actually thought she was going to die.

“It took her about an hour and a half to crawl 120 metres.” With a severely broken ankle in two places, Mrs Letton’s cries for help were believed to have saved her with a worker coming to her aid.
“The only way she could stop it was by grabbing hold of its ears,” Mr Letton said. “When she tried to get up, her ankle was busted and completely bent around backwards, relocated.”
In slow recovery mode after being transferred to the Renmark Paringa District Hospital yesterday, Mr Letton said his mother is badly bruised and very sore. “She’ll be all right but she won’t be working here at the farm, that’s what she loves doing, and she won’t be at the market for a little while,” he said. Mr Letton said there has been an outpouring of support for Mrs Letton following the incident. “I posted it on Facebook so that people would know and people have been ringing me,” he said. “She is obviously a very well liked person.”

Tourism chief to reapply for role? DESTINATION Riverland executive officer Tony Sharley has declined to speculate about whether he will reapply for the position. With the tourism body’s 12 month executive officer contract coming to an end, Destination Riverland will advertise to fill the position. Mr Sharley said there is “nothing to rule me out”. “The Board will run this process, it won’t be convened by me or through our office because obviously I am a potential applicant,” he said. “I think that at this stage I am not going to commit to whether I do or I don’t.
■ STAY OR GO?: Destination Riverland executive officer Tony Sharley will not disclose whether he will reapply for the role. “I think it is really important from the point of view of good governance that the Board now runs an open process to recruit an executive officer.
“In the first instance it was a bit of a scramble to get up and running and secure funding that was available from the South Australian Tourism Commission etc., so it was easier for the Board to contract me and part of that contract was to go out and secure that money that we knew had been set aside. “I want to encourage people to apply, I think it is a very exciting opportunity for somebody either within the region to step up or from outside the region to come into the area.” Mr Sharley said the Board will look at formalising the appointment of an executive officer and that is expected to be completed
before the end of the year. “Now we are in a better position to know more about the organisation, we know much more about the demands on us and we’ve got a better feel for where we are going,” he said. “I’ve been supporting Destination Riverland since its incorporation, right through the development of its strategic plans and the securing of its first 12 months funding through some of the other steps we are just about to sign off on, which will be the new logo/brand. “I’ll stay involved with the Board right up until such time as the appointment is made.”
Monash burn-off gone wrong causes CFS to warn property owners to be wary THE Country Fire Service (CFS) is urging property owners to consider weather conditions before burning off rubbish or vegetation to reduce fuel loads ahead of the Fire Danger Season after two small fires in the Riverland this week. Region 3 Bushfire Prevention Officer Andrew Patten said CFS crews responded to two small fires in Riverland’s Chaffey area
on Tuesday with one of them at Monash spreading to a shed causing around $10,000 damage. “People are doing the right thing by burning rubbish and reducing fuel loads on their properties but they also need to check the weather forecast before conducting these burns,” Mr Patten said. “A burn can easily get out of control unless it’s
carefully planned and various steps are followed including supervising it at all times and making sure it’s carried out with extreme caution at the right time, including checking that the burn is fully extinguished and cold.” Mr Patten said that outside of the Fire Danger Season landholders need to be aware of their local Council’s Code of Practice
for burning-off and follow their guidelines. “Some councils have environmental restrictions for burning-off so it’s important for property owners to check with their council if any restrictions apply in their local area,” he said. He also advises anyone lighting a campfire to make sure it is not left burning and is fully extinguished before leaving the site.

CLAIMS that Loxton’s tap water breached World Health Organisation guidelines 325 times are completely false, according to the Loxton Waikerie Council. After Loxton was named as having the second highest guideline breaches for its tap water in country South Australia, the concerned local council investigated the claims. The Freedom of Information data from SA Water was obtained by environmental health organisation Friends of the Earth, who said Loxton recorded the second worst tap water. In a Sunday Mail article, Friends of the Earth researcher Anthony Amis said the state’s most worrying breaches related to the potentially cancer causing product known as trihalomethanes (THM), which are used to remove harmful organisms from the water. However, after seeking advice from SA Health, the Loxton Waikerie Council believes the figures have been misinterpret-
ed and Loxton has not in fact breached the guidelines anywhere near 325 times. “They’ve used the national water quality guidelines which is an Australian wide one and (SA Health) found that they’ve used the wrong values,” Loxton Waikerie Council environmental health officer Kate Knight said. “There has been the wrong values used and we’ve (Loxton) only breached it three or four times. “The breach is an increase in the chlorine being found in the product which isn’t a huge concern to health in the long run. “The original article was saying they found trihalomethanes in the Loxton water and it is carsonagenic and what (SA Health) found in the original report is that we don’t actually have identified THMs in our water.” Loxton Waikerie Council community services manager Stephen Bateman said council would be aware if there was any major problems with the local water supply.
“With the information that we received from SA Health and SA Water, there is nothing wrong with our water, it is of good quality,” he said. “We need to make sure that the water supplies in our council area complies with all the relevant legislation and water guidelines and we’ve got no hassles with it. “It’s absolutely fantastic that you’ve got these groups out there making people aware of certain things as long as they use the right information and provide people with the right information.”

that arrives and it’s larger than expected, or perhaps it is at a time where you have other things going on in your life, that you ought to contact the retailer as soon as possible and structure a payment plan so you don’t leave yourself exposed to potential disconnection.”

ALMOST a year ago, Lloyd Wright joined the Rural Financial Counselling Service SA with growers receiving Exceptional Circumstances assistance and disease challenging the most resilient blockies. Local ‘burn books’ shut down RIVERLAND high school principals have advised students not to take part in Facebook gossip pages know as a ‘burn book’ as the state’s education union calls for offenders to be prosecuted and taught a lesson. The message comes after it is understood ‘burn book’ pages were created about three of the four Riverland high schools, with many students and teachers named and bullied. The final local ‘burn book’ is understood to have been taken down by Facebook early this week. The creator of one particular page decided to apply to shut it down following a number of death threats. On another local ‘burn book’, students lashed out heavily at the creator stating it was aimed at vunerable teenagers, forcing students to spread rumours about each other. Loxton High School principal Steve Marshall said as soon as he was informed about the page, immediate action was taken. “Last Tuesday when there was a Facebook page put up that was putting out derogatory comments about the school and the students, I had a massive line-up of students, staff and parents reporting it to me because they were just so hurt by the fact that people would say something damaging about their school,” he said. “They take a lot of pride in Loxton High School and they were really, really hurt. “Those students, we gave some advice to to report it to the police. “I’ve actually gone down there with a full print out of those pages and reported it to the police. “I’ll do things to protect the school and if it means trying to track down students that have authored this, through the authorities, then we will do that. “We would advise our students not to take part in it, not to respond on a page like that and make a comment.” Mr Marshall said the school does not allow mobile phones at school, a move which he believes has curbed bullying. “The students do not have access to Facebook at school, they are made
to leave their phones at home or hand them in at the front office which they do and we store them securely for the day,” he said. “As far as I know we are the only Riverland high school that has taken that stance and it shows up quite significantly in our bullying policy and our review that we have actually removed a lot of bullying and harassment from our school because of that stance.” Glossop High School principal Bevin Brooks said “people will be charged” over the creation of the ‘burn book’ pages. “It was a matter of hours after we were informed it existed, it was less than a day and it was gone, so we are pretty happy from the response of both Facebook managers and also from the education department,” he said. “The authorities have the real ability to detect who is responsible, they can trace offenders. “The message is, if you want to find yourself in real trouble, keep doing this sort of nonsense.”
We think some steps need to be taken now to actually prosecute some of these issues.
Australian Education Union SA president Correna Haythorpe described the ‘burn books’ and ‘memes’ pages as “disgusting”. “We’ve raised this with the education department, we’ve also raised this with the police and I think that one of the things that students don’t understand is that they are actually engaging in E-crime,” she said. “Some of these comments, I’ve had a look at them, they are absolutely disgusting, some of the are defamatory in nature and some of them are quite sexist or of a sexual nature. “This is an issue now that schools
are facing as teachers don’t expect when they go to school that they are going to be named and shamed or have rude photos posted up on Facebook pages with their heads placed on top of the photo. “I think some of the comments are obscene...and we know that students who endure this sort of bullying, whether it is cyber bullying or personal bullying, it can have a really damaging impact on their self esteem and we’ve seen in other states where students have actually taken their life.” Ms Haythorpe said action must be taken against the offenders. “Our grave concern really is that it is E-crime and there is provision in the education act for the minister to fine people who make offensive comments, particularly teachers, up to $500,” she said. “While that is a fairly small amount we think some steps need to be taken now to actually prosecute some of these issues. “We need to make our students aware that they are engaging in electronic crime, their comments are defamatory and they could be prosecuted. “I think there is a lot of naivety out there amongst our students about the impact of these Facebook pages and that has to be addressed at the school level.” A Department of Education and Child Development spokesperson said it has offered advice to schools regarding the use of Facebook. “The Department is in dialogue with Facebook in an effort to have the ability to escalate instances of breaking the law and/or Facebook’s terms and conditions directly to a higher authority in Facebook, bypassing the normal reporting route,” they said. “However, currently all individuals who find questionable material are being advised to use Facebook’s native reporting tools. “Where issues of a potentially serious criminal nature are highlighted (such as threats, inappropriate comments of a sexual nature, etc.) then such matters are referred to SA Police.”
Grants to boost new home market THE Riverland housing market is expected to receive a welcome boost following the announcement the State Government will provide a special grant to purchase and build new properties. The state’s peak real estate organisation, the Real Estate Institute of South Australia (REISA), believes the State’s Government’s decision to extend homebuyer grants for new properties is an important investment to stimulate construction and the local economy. Under the new grant, until June 2013, homebuyers can receive $8500 for a new home regardless of whether it is their first property and first home owners building or buying a brand new home will be eligible for $23,500. REISA general manager Emma Slape told the Riverland Weekly there is hope the new grants will encourage more people to build across the state, including regional areas like the Riverland.
“Long term it should help regenerate housing stock right across the state and give people good housing options,” she said. “Also the construction grant will boost building activity, it should also help local economies that have been a little flat in the past two years. “Hopefully like any region it attracts more people to build.” REISA chief executive officer Greg Troughton said the grants will help people get into a new property sooner and create additional housing stock for projected population growth into the future. “Although REISA is disappointed that the first homeowner grant is being reduced for people purchasing existing properties, the intent to stimulate the housing market and construction is respected,” he said. “The property sector in our state employs one in ten South Australians and we generate over 40 per cent of taxation revenue, so we are pleased

Banjo the dog gives Sue new lease on life AFTER being a diabetic for over 40 years, Berri woman Sue Clarke has been given a new lease on life all thanks to the generous support of the local community. Finding Workable Solutions, Paws for Diabetics and the Berri Rotary Club were all involved in organising and raising funds for Sue to acquire the services of Banjo the dog. Banjo can help sense changes in Sue’s blood sugar levels to let the owner know of any possible hypoglycemic episodes. “As you get older you don’t recognise low blood sugars which are hypoglycemic attacks and I’ve collapsed quite a few times down the street in different shops and I wanted to get some help,” Sue said. “Banjo will be able to smell the changes in my blood sugars as they drop and he will be able to alert me that I should do a blood sugar test. “At the moment I am not able to go anywhere without somebody being with me. “So for the first time in probably two years I will have some freedom.” Paws for Diabetics presented Banjo the dog to Sue earlier this month after help from Finding Workable Solutions and $550 of funding from the Berri Rotary Club. Paws for Diabetics director Sharon Scott said the organisation has been running

She said the dog will play a vital role in Sue’s life. “It’s all about getting the dogs to alert to a low before it becomes a health issue,” she said. “With his (Banjo) breeder we’ve had a sample from Sue, a swab she’s taken when her blood sugar levels were low, and the breeder has actually introduced him to that already so he is familiar with the scent. “It’s all rewards based games, for him he doesn’t know that he is actually working. “All he knows is that when
he smells that smell and reacts to it, then he gets lots of love and praise and as a puppy that’s what he wants. “What he has done for Sue already is come up and lick her hand and actually started chewing her fingers (when her blood sugar levels are low) and he just gets recognition for doing that. “Every dog finds his own way of reacting. “With puppies it’s really easy to get them to lick because that’s a natural thing for them to want to do and it also brings that scent onto their tongue and really enhances it for them.” Berri based Finding Workable Solutions’ David Glen
praised the efforts of the community for their work to secure Banjo. “It was a great community effort involving a lot of people and a fair amount of time but we believe that is our policy in life to assist our clients wherever we can,” he said. “Sue is a client of ours and we’ve placed her in employment as a self employed cleaner and with her condition as it was, she had to stop work because she couldn’t do things on her own. “This dog will now give her that freedom to continue working. “It’s going to add to her quality of life and that’s what it’s all about.”

Fine festival weather RIVERLAND Wine and Food Festival organisers are hoping a weather forecast of temperatures exceeding 30 degrees on Saturday will attract a large crowd to the main event. Acting event manager Sue Whitbourne said the weather is a crucial factor in the overall success of the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The weather is something that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve kept our eye on for a period of time,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To be able to look up last Sunday and see that everything was going to be pretty fine and very workable weather with very little wind, it puts a smile on your face.

Premierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $1 million alcohol violence campaign YOUNG people will get their say on alcohol-related violence through a series of face-to-face interviews, social media campaign and community meetings, as part of the State Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s $1 million community education campaign aimed at curbing alcohol-
related violence. Premier Jay Weatherill said the Sammy D Foundation will lead a wide-ranging youth survey to gauge the views of young people. The youth survey will involve face-to-face interviews with people aged between 16 and 30 to hear
their views on improving safety and preventing crime. Young people will be interviewed in up to 20 locations around metropolitan and regional areas at schools, TAFEs, universities, sporting clubs and beaches.
There will be a social media campaign in conjunction with Sammy D, to spread the message as far as possible. A series of metropolitan and regional community meetings to hear first hand from the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s young people are being organised.

FOR the first time in South Australia, the Department of Marineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sole indigenous Marine Officer Steve Roberts conducted a training session to enable nine indigenous trainees to obtain boat licences. This was a first for the Department, where the nine trainees, based at Monarto, were taken through all aspects of safe boating during their visit to Calpurem Station yesterday. A Department spokesman said that the priority was to educate people about safety wherever possible, with penalising being a last resort.

A 33-year-old Barmera man was arrested and charged with carrying an offensive weapon at about 2.30am on Tuesday on Renmark Avenue at Renmark. The man was allegedly located in the vicinity of the skate park when police say they found a sharpened blade from a set of secateurs in his possession. The man was bailed and will appear in the Magistrates Court at a later date.

Ancient relic to be on display at Barmera church A 400-year-old relic of St Francis Xavier, normally housed in a church in Rome, will arrive in Barmera this week. The relic will visit various Dioceses across Australia and will be in St Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church, Barmera, from 2pm on Friday until 1pm on Saturday. As part of the Year of Grace, the relic will visit the regional cities of Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla before returning to Adelaide. St Francis Xavier is the Patron Saint of Australia and was known to have a very engaging personality. After journeys through India and the islands of South East Asia, he was the first of the missionaries to go to Japan and at the time of his death aged 46, he was on an island off the coast of China. St Francis Xavier baptised thousands of people and was revered as the holy one by people of all faiths including Christian, Hindu and Muslim. On Friday, inspirational talks on the life of St Francis Xavier will be held at 6pm followed by Mass at 7pm. Talks will also be held at 10am on Saturday with a Mass at 11am.

Marathon adventure AS 18-year-old Chris Hayward sat quietly on a chair on the Paringa riverfront earlier this week, he reflected on the challenges he has faced on his journey to become the youngest person to ever paddle the River Murray from ‘source to sea’ in a kayak. Inspired by a friend’s journey up the mighty River Murray, Chris decided he wanted to complete a 2600 kilometre journey in the river in a kayak. After learning how to pilot a kayak earlier in the year, Chris took off from the source of the River Murray in Victoria’s alpine region arriving in the Riverland this week. He admits it has not been an easy journey so far and a lonely one as well. “The very fast water at the start (was challenging) and I capsized five times in the first two days,” he said. “Since then the other challenges have been the weather but also just those really long stretches with no towns, for instance Wentworth to Renmark.” Chris hopes to reach his goal, the mouth of the Mur-
ray in South Australia, in about a fortnight. During his journey Chris stopped at Riverland towns Renmark, Paringa, Berri, Loxton and Waikerie. So far he has raised more than $1000 for not-for-profit organisation Greenfleet Australia which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “Greenfleet is a charity that is close to my heart, I strongly believe in what they do, I think it is effective,” he said. That total is set to rise with a 2012 Geelong football guernsey to be auctioned off in the near future. Chris, who previously worked as a tour guide and birdkeeper at Ballarat Bird World, said the adventure “beats a nine to five job”. He said the scenery and serenity of South Australian has been especially appealing to him, as well as the friendly locals. “It’s just very beautiful, particularly the South Australian area,” Chris said. From your Project Managers Welcome to our October update for Berri Barmera LAP and Riverland West Landcare.
W
e can’t believe that another two months have already passed, along with winter (did we have one?) and that summer is almost upon us. The last two months have been crazy with final reporting and getting a myriad of little tasks done and out of the way. The continued high river has curtailed and postponed a number of projects and activities, although the upside of course is after an extended drink, the wetlands and floodplains are looking as healthy as they have for many years. After 10 years of drought, it seems crazy to be now wanting a period of entitlement flow, but this is exactly what some of the red gums, in particular, are craving, to give their roots a chance to dry out again, as some are definitely starting to show signs of stress from too much water…. Amongst what is again showcased in this feature, a snapshot of other activities we have been up to include: • •

Developing interpretive signage for Ramco Lagoon. Designing and printing promotional materials for Riverland West Landcare, Wilabalangaloo nature trail and and Loveday Wetlands. Assisting the Aboriginal Lands Trust to clean up willows at Lushville, Gerard. Decommissioning tracks at Ramco to restrict vehicle access. Opening the Interpretive Indigenous (bush tucker) Garden at Illalangi. Building insect homes for teacher PD training. Working with the Riverland ALOC team to control weeds at Martin Bend and, of course, being a part of the Riverland Field Days.
The next two months promises to be just as hectic and we would definitely encourage anyone with an interest to come along to our respective AGMs (refer to the adverts in this feature for more information). For those that have been asking or are interested, the BBLAP committee is still negotiating with the National Trust of SA to relocate our office to Wilablangaloo. At this point in time, both parties have reached a general agreement for this to occur and are waiting on formal approval from Crown Lands SA and Berri Barmera Council before proceeding further. We will hopefully have some positive news towards the end of the year, so watch this space.
YET attend the National Landcare Awards AFTER winning the SA Landcare Education Award in 2011, representatives from the Waikerie Primary School Youth Environment Team travelled to Sydney to attend the 2012 National Landcare Awards as finalists in the People’s Choice category. Connie Griffiths and Jonathan Twigden were accompanied by their teacher Jeany Winter, Project Officer for Riverland West Landcare Karen Bishop, RMYC mentor Milly Hoffmann and their parents Janine and Tracy. After arriving in Sydney, the group spent a day at Taronga Zoo where Connie and Jonathon had the opportunity to present their environmental projects to other schools nominated for the education award. The group were also treated to a behind-thescenes tour of the reptile
house where they had the chance to handle lizards, snakes and turtles among other things. The highlight of the trip was attending the formal gala dinner where the kids were able to meet and have their photos taken with Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and Landcare ambassador Catriona Rowntree. Although a Tasmanian school won the People’s Choice award, it was an amazing experience for everyone who attended and lots of ideas have already been brainstormed for the next round of entries. Dial 1800 PARROT THE Regent Parrot Recovery Team (RPRT) and Riverland West Landcare are calling for community members to ring the new Regent Parrot hotline number to report any sightings of these nationally threatened birds in the area. Funding for this project was received through the DENR State NRM Community Grants program and will enable the RPRT to continue collecting valuable data. Recent surveys of the bird have indicated that there has been a significant decline in numbers in particular areas and in response to this, the RPRT have launched a media campaign to engage community members to report any sightings and observations including flight path direction, numbers of birds in flocks and feeding areas. RWL project officer Karen Bishop said that information collected from the phone calls will be put into a growing data base and used to help determine areas that need further investigation. “The RPRT is moving into a stage where we need to look closer at finding out why some colonies have started declining whereas others seem to be increasing in numbers,” she said. “The sightings from community members are crucial for this project to proceed, whether it is reporting on 10 or 100 birds; every piece of information
is of great benefit.” In conjunction with the 1800 hotline, members of the RPRT will be capturing, banding and releasing Regent’s to record their flight paths and feeding grounds during the non breeding season. Vets from Zoos SA will also carry out blood sampling and feather analysis on selected birds during this phase of the project. RWL and the RPRT are also trialling nest cameras using CCTV recording equipment to capture the Regents nesting, breeding and feeding habits. “This is a really exciting project because as far as we have been able to tell, we are the only group in Australia actually capturing live footage of the birds compared to the usual still photography,”Mrs Bishop said. The 1800 PARROT (1800 727 768) hotline is a free call and is manned by DEWNR staff during business hours and volunteers after hours and community members are encouraged to phone through their observations. Spring fish surveys IN conjunction with staff from the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, our annual spring fish surveys are underway across our managed wetlands. Last week saw monitoring undertaken at eight sites in Beldora/Spectacle Lakes and Martins Bend Wetlands. Whilst the data is still be analysed, fish captured in the surveys included natives species of carp gudgeons,
flathead gudgeons and golden perch, with the introduced species being carp, goldfish and gambusia. On a positive note, we have not captured any oriental weatherloach and hopefully that trend continues. We will provide more detail from these surveys in our December feature and you are welcome to contact Paul or Karen for more specific information once the data has been analysed.

Barmera Primary School Environmental Expo ONCE again the Barmera Primary School Environmental Expo proved to be an exciting day for students from six Riverland schools with over 300 students attending. Kingston-on-Murray and the Upper Murray Youth Environment Council joined Mr Warren’s year 5/6 class to present workshops on a variety of environmental topics. Miss Baum’s Year 9 Glossop High School students also joined the expo as mentors for each of the primary school groups. The older students worked with the Barmera students as part of their high school SOSE component. They gained first hand expe-
rience in showing research skills and information processing to the younger students. The Glossop High School students also practiced management and interpersonal relationship development with the Barmera students. The workshops used the ‘Kids Teaching Kids’ learning model. Students take responsibility for their own learning in a practical way aiming to inspire other students to learn and care for their environment. Creating the workshops provided the students with opportunities to learn to communicate effectively, co-operate as a group and practice problem solving techniques while developing a solid base of knowledge on their
chosen topics. This year the Expo was extended into an additional day. Following the day at Barmera Primary School, Glossop and Barmera students boarded a bus for an Environmental Roadshow. They travelled to Morgan to present their workshops at the Morgan Football Clubrooms for Morgan Primary School students and then continued to Waikerie to repeat the performances for Waikerie Primary School students. The round trip of over 200 kilometres was well received by the students, who otherwise would have been unable to participate. The expo showcased that
the students of Barmera Primary School, Glossop High School mentoring students and the other Riverland schools involved, care about their environment and community and are keen for others to learn about local environmental topics and broader issues to help the Riverland area become environmentally sustainable. The Barmera students would like to thank all of those who helped make their day so successful. The support of the various organisations and the Berri Barmera Council, Murray Darling Basin Authority, Berri NRM, Australia Post and Berri Barmera LAP was greatly appreciated.
Walk for a healthy Hart TWENTY community members attended the inaugural ‘Walk for a Healthy Hart’ event held by Riverland West Landcare (RWL) and the Hart Lagoon Wetland Group (HLWG) on a sunny Saturday morning in September. Karen Bishop, project officer for RWL, welcomed those who attended and gave a brief background summary before handing over to NRM wetland officer Callie Nickolai to talk about the ecology of wetlands and parameters measured during monitoring rounds conducted on a quarterly basis. The aim of the event was to engage community members in a more social setting where they could come along, learn something about the
wetland and perhaps consider joining RWL in future events. “We are so fortunate to have a wetland this close to the centre of Waikerie that can be utilised by so many different people for a variety of reasons,” Mrs Bishop said. “We don’t necessarily expect volunteers to join up for the quarterly monitoring, they may be interested in bird watching or plant identification, especially weeds, that can then be reported back to us for our records.” What made this event particularly enjoyable was that members of the HLWG conducted the actual walking tour and shared their knowledge of local native plants and the birds that frequent the lagoon. tions and have them answered by group members who have spent countless hours working on the lagoon and then they joined them for a barbecue lunch to finish off the morning. Feedback from those attending was very positive and has encouraged the HLWG to consider holding another walk and perhaps even turning it into an annual event. “It was great to see some new faces and hopefully those attending have gone away knowing a little bit more about the lagoon that they can share with others,”Mrs Bishop said. Newsagents reach milestone F
AMILY owned Berri Newsagency is celebrating more than a decade in business over the next week, thanking customers and staff for their dedication over the years. The significant milestone represents 10 years of hard work for owners Drew and Paula Nelsson, who pride themselves on personalised customer service day in, day out. Believed to be one of the oldest businesses in Berri, the Vaughan Court newsagency was purchased by the Nelsson’s in 2002, along with another shop front in the Riverland Central Plaza. Through challenging economic times the business has remained strong but last year, the Nelsson’s decided it was financially best to close the plaza store and operate just one newsagency site. “Financially it was a decision that had to be made, decisions are not made easily but we are in a better place now,” Drew said. Drew and Paula said they feel honoured to be able to serve the community for the past 10 years. “It feels like only yesterday but there has been a lot of water under the bridge,” Paula said. “There was a lot of hard times throughout those years but the last year has probably been the best out of the past 10 years.” As part of the birthday celebrations, from October 18 to 28, the newsagency will be running a major instore competition and will have various giveaways and prizes on offer. “Spend $20 instore and you go into the draw to win a flat screen television which we think is fantastic,” Drew said. “We are encouraging people to come into the store, chat to staff and celebrate our birthday milestone with us.”

History in the making THE Berri Newsagency has been an important addition to the small Riverland town over the years, moving to several central locations before where it currently is today. It wasn’t until 2002 that Drew and Paula Nelsson decided to accept a new challenge and purchase the Berri Newsagency. The pair had been living in Adelaide with two-year-old son Jack and decided buying the business and moving to the Riverland was the right thing to do. “When I moved up to the Riverland I worked on the block with my father for a short time before purchasing
the newsagency as a family,” Drew said. Paula was certainly ready for the challenge given her background working in the retail sector after finishing high school. Over the past decade, the Berri Newsagency has served thousands of people with many being daily or regular customers. “We have seen people grow up and leave school, move away and come back with babies,” Paula said. “Unfortunately we have also been through the passing of some of our favourite customers. “We don’t call them cus-
tomers as they are people before they are customers.” Drew said the Berri Newsagency prides itself on personalised customer service. “We have a great relationship with our customers because you see the same customers sometimes every day or once or twice a week and you get to know people,” he said. “When we first started we had to manually enter every single type of magazine into the computer and print stickers out that way, whereas now it is all downloaded on our system,” Paula added about the changes they have seen in the industry.
“We’d like to say thank you to our staff and customers over the past 10 years and we are looking forward to further good times in the Riverland.” The Berri Newsagency has also embraced the changing technology with its very own Facebook page, which people are encouraged to visit.
Strengthening their bond RUNNING a business as husband and wife can be very challenging considering the fast paced nature of the retail industry. However, Drew and Paula have managed to keep their sense of humour and sanity. “Just in the one shop it is a little bit hands on together but for a few years there I was at the plaza and Paula was down here,” Drew said. “Just having one shop has given us more family time and more time to spend with the kids which is very important. “It’s great to be a little bit more secure in our life and our business.”

The changing face of a newsagency W
HEN one thinks of a newsagent the thought of newspapers and magazines is the first thing that comes into mind. While these items are a core area of the Berri Newsagency, there is also so much more. Not only can you pick up your morning newspaper at the newsagent but while you are there you can purchase a coffee, selection of Darrell Lea sweets and buy yourself a lottery ticket. Berri Newsagency owner Drew Nelsson said continually bringing in new stock and creative ideas helps make the business remain viable. “Twenty years ago a newsagency was all about just selling newspapers and now it’s maybe not quite as much just about that because there is so much more out there,” he said. From extensive magazine and
newspaper categories to stationary, party accessories, gift ideas, books and ink cartridges, Berri Newsagency has a lot to offer. Over the past decade, the Berri Newsagency has been stocking Hallmark cards and Darrell Lea products, as well as the latest addition of a premium coffee machine. “The addition of a coffee machine was just another service we can offer,” Paula said. “People come in, grab a paper and grab a coffee. “We’ve also got cold drinks, so in the summer they can grab their paper and a cold drink.” Berri Newsagency also takes magazine orders, provides newspapers and magazines to other local businesses, orders books in from Adelaide and delivers the paper to homes across the region seven days a week. “We do a lot of book ordering for
people,” Drew said. “It is not just the books we’ve got in store, we have an account with Dymocks in Adelaide, so if a book is hard to find, we just charge $2.50 extra for freight.” The Berri Newsagency is open seven days a week, including on Sunday from 9am to 12pm and employs up to three staff members instore and a delivery person on the weekends. Being an SA Lotteries agent has also helped provide another in demand service to customers at the newsagency. “Berri newsagency has never won a division one XLotto but that means it is getting closer,” Drew said. This year the newsagency is offering a system 18 syndicate which sold out in just six days but is planning to provide a system 20 syndicate for the New Year’s Eve draw in 2013.

Paula said affordability is another reason why people choose to head to the Berri Newsagency. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are very mindful that economically it is tight in the Riverland and we always try and
buy products in that meet that price point for people, so they are not overly expensive,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Six or seven years ago there werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as many multi-national companies, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had to learn to compete, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had to source other varieties of stock. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re different, we can offer that customer service to customers, they can come in and ask a question and we go out of our way to help them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They walk out of the door having brought something and having had a nice time doing it.â&#x20AC;? Personally, Paula has been thanked for her efforts in the newsagency with a nomination in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zonta Club Riverland Women in Business Awards. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was actually really good to go back and see where youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve come from and where you are now,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just the journey of what it has taken me to get to this point.â&#x20AC;?

Paula said. Drew shed his beloved locks for charity raising $6000 in 2010 and he is on the Monash and Lone Gum Community Association helping to organise this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Monash Shindig.

Photo: ABC ■ THE list of former top line cricketers that will be members of the Australian Cricketers’ Association’s Masters tour, including a Twenty20 game at Renmark in November, continues to grow with Peter Sleep, Matthew Elliott and Tim Nielsen now added to those announced previously, John Davison, Terry Aldermann and Greg Matthews. Former Australian coach and South Australian wicketkeeper Tim Nielsen, leg-spinning allrounder Peter Sleep and former Australian, Victorian and South Australian left-hander Matthew Elliott add depth to an already formidable team with the rest of the squad to be revealed over the next fortnight. The trio will be part of the ACA Masters tour taking place from November 15 to 17, the highlight of which will be an action-packed Twenty20 match on Friday, No-
vember 16, against a representative team of Riverland players. Elliott, who boasts a highest Test score of 199 against England during the 1997 Ashes series, said he is looking forward to the Twenty20 game. “I’m really excited to be part of the tour and can’t wait to get to Renmark to join up with the Masters,” he said. “I know how passionate this region is about its cricket and I’m really pumped to be supporting the 100th anniversary of cricket in Renmark. “Hopefully we can put on a good show during the match and in all the other events around the tour. “Most of the ACA Masters guys I played with, or against, in my career, so it’ll be great to catch up, hopefully hit a few off the middle of the bat and share some stories.”

Improved bowlers ■ IMPROVED efforts by the Barmera Bowlling Club’s first division men’s Saturday pennant team are perhaps a performance indicator across the whole club. There is certainly a new approach and attitude at the Lakeside club both on and off the greens and I caught up with club president Peter van Enkhuyzen on Monday to ask him about the reasons behind the increase in enthusiasm that is making people sit up and take notice. ‘Enky’ is not new to sport or sports administration. He was secretary of the Barmera Monash Football Club for 25 years and is in his fifth year as president of the Barmera Bowling Club. Peter served the first of the club’s legislated two year terms in 20012002 and his second stint in 20102011 before deciding to enter into a third term in 2012. “The main reason I decided to go on was because I did not believe we had achieved enough in night owl bowls,” he said. Peter explained that not only is social bowls a way of attracting new participants, possibly into pennant teams, but it is also a major contributor towards the financial lifeline of the club. Barmera night owls on Thursday and social bowls are right up there with the best in the Riverland. “We have around 70 playing night owls and while it is still short of the best, we had previously around 120, it is on the increase,” Peter said. President of the club’s social committee, which has increased to a group of 14 people, Peter has also been a sole selector for the men’s teams for two years. “Being without a men’s pennant

Berri’s Andrew Hill is in his 10th year with the senior men’s group, while Loxton’s Tamzin and Gerrin Jenke are members of the under 18 squads. For Kerry Treloar the end came when she stood down from state commitments after the National Championships in April this year following 12 years and over 100 appearances with SA teams. This season, however, a new approach appears to be working, although admittedly it is early days. “We have a good club coach in Michael Burns with practice sessions split between Thursday and Friday afternoons,” Peter explained. So far this season, the Barmera first division team has won against Renmark RSL and last Saturday it shared the rinks with an in form Loxton, even though it went down by 20 shots overall. In that 94-74 result, the club’s leading Skipper from 2011-12, John Morena, received a 34-8 drubbing against a four led by Loxton

He will be at a trial this Sunday towards selection in a series against Victoria next January and then in Adelaide from Wednesday to Friday for a SA versus New Zealand match. This has been designed as a warm-up for the Kiwis on one of the venues for the World Championships to be held next month.

So despite a 20 shot deficit that result may not have been all that bad. “We were up by five shots at halftime but Pavia was unbelievable and took it away from us,” Peter said. Nevertheless the Barmera president is encouraged by this season’s player commitment. “We have introduced a number of younger bowlers to our number one team this season and we are going to be patient and persevere with them,” Peter said. The club is also encouraging its players to enter as many of the Riverland season’s competitions as it is able to with 11 nominations in a field of 29 for the State Open Singles sectional play at Barmera on October 21. “We are also taking teams away to play at other clubs,” Peter said. “We have already been to Coomealla and have trips planned to Blyth and Balaklava. “These extra chances to play against a variety of opponents is important but the trips are also about developing club and team spirit.” Over the past couple of seasons Barmera has also run sessions for local primary school children. “The biggest misconception ever is that bowls is only a sport for older people,” Peter said. “Just look at the Australian and state teams of today and you will see what I mean”. Six team competition ■ WITH the Barmera Lakers Baseball Club deciding to go into recess for this season the Riverland League will have the one six team competition for 2012-13. Berri and Renmark will each have two sides with the other teams, Loxton and Lyrup, with the balance between the number one and two teams at Berri and Renmark a matter for the clubs to decide. It is understood a number of Barmera players have transferred under permit to other clubs. On a positive note, talking to former USA Major League player Luke Prokopec last weekend, I found that soon after his return to live in Renmark he is becoming involved in the Little League concept being introduced into the Riverland. All children around nine to 13 years of age, boys and girls, whether they have tried baseball

Yacht club members battle in challenging conditions ■ AFTER the magnificent sailing conditions in the opening weeks of the season at the Lake Bonney Yacht Club, last Saturday’s light and variable winds were an anti climax. Mark Pfennig with ‘The
Matrix’ continued his good form and Steve Thomas with ‘Just Do It’ put the problems of the previous weekend behind him to share line honours in the two handicap A races for Miscellaneous Catamarans.
In race one, placings were Pfennig, Thomas and Peter Dunk and Kirsten Thomas sailing ‘Splashes of Brilliance’ and in race two Thomas was the winner ahead of Pfennig, Dunk and Thomas.
In division two for Pacers, ‘Sea Chook’ with Tim and Josh Ridley aboard took the honours. Handicap B1 is programmed for this Saturday and can involve either multi short races or one

Loxton Sporting Club to host traditional Melbourne Cup Eve dinner
■ LOXTON and Renmark–Berri Field and Game members took aim at the 75 Target Riverland Steel/Poly’s Fruit Juice’s Compak Championships at the Loxton range on Sunday in perfect conditions for shooting. Scores were close in all three rounds of the A, B and C grade competitions with the B grade, in particular, closely fought between ‘Gundy’ Schmaal (Loxton) and father and son Renmark duo John and Matt Redway. In A grade, Kevin Nickolai continued his good form to win with a score of 64/75 ahead of his Loxton club mate Ray Pash, 60/75. The Redway’s John 61/75, and Matt, 54/75 took the B grade honours, and in C grade, Loxton’s Paul Pippos, 54/75, dominated the shoot with Bryce Eagle, a new member at Loxton, second on 37/75. Briley, the twelve-year-oldson of Loxton club president Rick Gibbs competed in his first event and with a competitive score in C grade, impressed some experienced onlookers.
■ THE fifth annual Melbourne Cup Eve dinner will be held at the Loxton Sporting Club on Monday, November 5, starting at 6pm. Looking at its previous races with the Melbourne Cup’s 3200 metres in mind, it finished second at Ascot in England amongst 18 starters in June over 4369 metres, third at Longchamp in France over 2800 metres in July and third in Deauville, France, over 3000 metres in August. By GRAHAM CHARLTON A MEETING was held at Waikerie last night to discuss the immediate and long term future of the Waikerie Gold team after a shortage of players led to it surprisingly forfeiting its opening game of the season against Blanchetown Swan Reach in the Mid Murray Cricket Association on Saturday. Waikerie Gold, the reigning premier and dominant side in the competition for a long time, is crucial to the now four team structure that includes new club Perponda, after Cadell folded and Claypans moved to another competition. The 2012-13 season started full of promise in Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second game with Morgan 9 for 212 winning a high scoring encounter against Perponda, 195. For Morgan, Bradley Wilksch scored 79 and Jeremy Jaeger 56, as well as capturing 2 for 26. For the newcomer Perponda, Josh Rudiger dominated with a polished 129, while opening bowler Ashendenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 3 for 28 involved a hat-trick. Meanwhile, not all was smooth sailing for the start of the Riverland Turf Cricket Association A grade 2012-13 season, with Berri unable to prepare a pitch for its game against Renmark due to a roller breakdown and Renmark Oval unavailable, so that fixture was transferred to the hard wicket at Paringa.
