club’s new direction THE Barmera Country Club, located on the Barmera Golf Course, is about to undergo a significant upgrade as a syndicate of senior tourism people finalises plans to purchase the facility. The syndicate hopes to complete the purchase of the motel and conference centre by early November, before beginning a significant
report by
BRAD PERRY refurbishment program. Syndicate representative Peter Pickering, owner of Swan Hill Bus Lines, said the group has big intentions for the Country Club.
“Our group is very excited about the plans we have to develop the business into something the people of Barmera, and the Riverland in general, can be proud of,” he said. “We recognize the importance of quality accommodation, food and service to encourage holiday makers and business people to stay in the area for the
benefit of the community as a whole. “We will be working closely with the community leaders, the local golf club and local tourism representatives to see how we can best support the ongoing promotion of the Riverland as a business and holiday centre.” n Continued Page 2

Message from space A TRIAL is underway in Bookpurnong to assess the practicality of satellites in space providing information to growers about their irrigation water management. The IrriEYE trial is a collaboration between Naples University in Italy, the South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management (SA MDB NRM) Board and the Bookpurnong to Lock 4 Environmental Association. Natural Resources, SA MurrayDarling Basin’s Michael Cutting said the Board was approached by Professor of Water Management at Naples University Dr Guido D’Urso, who was keen to access data from the Board’s extensive network of automatic weather stations across the region, including the site at Bookpurnong. “We provided Dr. D’Urso with local weather station and irrigation data from the 2010/2011 season to calibrate the IrriEYE system to Australian conditions and local irrigation management

BRAD PERRY WHEN it comes to raising funds for good causes, the Riverland often bands together in a strong show of community spirit. This Sunday is one of those occasions when locals again need to come together for the greater good. The Light the Night Commu-

said that monitoring from space was able to provide timely personalised information directly to farmers that takes into account the actual development of their crops under the current environmental conditions and their agricultural practices. “While the IrriEYE system is currently focused on water management, I expect that the tech-
nology will continue to evolve and provide other agronomic benefits including nutrient and energy use efficiencies, Dr D’Urso said. Bookpurnong irrigator and trial participant Bill Ruediger reviewed his property’s results with Professor D’Urso when he visited Australia in June this year. Mr Ruediger noted that limitations he was already aware of such as soil type and impacts of the current irrigation system on crop canopy development were confirmed in the IrriEYE results. “I have a patch of citrus that I recently reworked, however, it is on the same irrigation valve as other more mature citrus making efficient irrigation scheduling quite difficult, Mr Ruediger said. “However, I’m currently in the process of upgrading my irrigation system to rectify this thanks to funding received through the Private Irrigation Infrastructure Program for South Australia.
Cancer touches many lives nity Walk being held in Renmark on Sunday is an important initiative raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. Many people’s lives have been impacted by cancer, including my own. My family lost one of the nicest people I will ever meet to cancer and he was someone I looked up to fondly. A smart and funny uncle,
who will never be far from my mind. I urge everyone in the community to take part in Light the Night to remember those loved ones who have such an illness or have lost their battle. For those who are fighting cancer, or who have fought cancer, such as the very brave Gavin Centofanti on our front page,
by gathering the community together it shows they are there to help and to offer support when needed. The lanterns that will be held during the walk are not just there to light the way. The gold lanterns are to remember a loved one, the white lantern will reflect on their own journey and a blue lantern is to support others.

THE Riverland and Mallee Vocational Awards was recognised with a state honour on Monday night at the Premier’s Community Service Awards. The Berri Rotary Club, which organises the awards, took home Best Event at the prestigious night held in Glenelg. Rotary Club of Berri’s Andrew Gower said the win acknowledges the importance of the event to the region. “This is just recognition for what has almost become an institution in the Riverland, Mr Gower said. “Just recognising the fact that it has been around for 29 years and that it’s important to the region, it gives recognition to trainees and apprentices, who in a lot of cases, it

Mallee Vocational Awards nominations are still being accepted with Mr Gower stating they have received a good number of applications for the February 8 event.

AFTER years of tireless work from volunteers, the committee behind the upkeep of the Argo Barge hope to have it set up as a permanent floating museum by Easter next year. At this month’s meeting, drawings of the new walkway and the platform design will be presented to the committee. Argo Barge committee chairperson Neil Martinson said plans have been in place for some time to turn the currently unused historic vessel into a tourist attrac-
tion and the project is now pushing forward. “We’ve now got the second skin on the barge itself, so that is stopping the water getting into the boat which has been a real issue for us, especially with automatic pumps there and electricity breakdowns,” he said. “The next part of the process is to get a platform on the inside of the Barge and we are going to have memorabilia in there that volunteers are putting together.
“People will have access to the Barge through the tourist office and that will also give them access to look over the PS Industry. “We are going to realign one of the fences there so you can physically get onto the Barge and then have a look at the memorabilia inside.” Renmark Paringa Council has set aside $50,000 for the works with the skin aligning the ship previously being donated. Mr Martinson said once the
walkways and fencing have been realigned, a new gang plank installed and a viewing platform on the Argo Barge in place, the vessel is expected to be a popular tourist attraction. “The Argo Barge is ancillary to the Industry, so that’s why we created the Port of Renmark,” Mr Martinson said. “It just gives tourists the opportunity to have a look at something else that’s reminiscent of the Riverland area and they can see a bit of history.”

Renmark to host AFL preseason match AUSTRALIAN Football League teams Port Power and Melbourne will play a NAB Cup preseason match in Renmark next year in a move which is expected to attract a number of visitors to the Riverland. The Riverland Football League was informed by
Port Adelaide yesterday that it would be playing the match at Renmark Oval on Sunday, March 3, at 4pm (CDT) following the release of the 2013 NAB Cup fixture. Riverland Football League chief executive Wendy Kruger said the announcement is a boost for
the game locally and the region as a whole. An AFL preseason game was last held in the Riverland at Berri in 2009. “I think it’s wonderful for the Riverland and wonderful for football,” Mrs Kruger said. “We hope to get a decent crowd and we hope
the public will support it.” Mrs Kruger said having AFL players in the region is a positive for the younger generation. “I think it’s good for the young kids, even if they don’t follow those two teams, they’ll all be out there,” she said.
Funding secured to assess Renmark Airport runway for future upgrades THE Renmark Paringa Council is gathering information through surveys to determine the need and usage of the local airport, with the possibility of being a stopover for Mildura flights to Adelaide. Council has been allocated $23,000 in funding from Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA) to carry out California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing of the main runway sub-base at the Renmark Airport. “This will give an accurate assessment of the subbase to enable costings of runway upgrades to cater for larger aircraft,” Council chief executive officer Tony Siviour said. Four surveys are being undertaken in a joint ini-
tiative by the council and Regional Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland under the headings of fly in/fly out mining and resource construction, business, health and tourism. We are now going to be able to do some core sampling of the runway.
The surveys have been designed to assess likely airport use if domestic and commercial flights were available in the future. Renmark Paringa Council Mayor Neil Martinson said data collected may be
used to approach flying companies. Council is also targeting an increase in international tourism and to potentially have a flying school based in the region. “We are now going to be able to do some core sampling of the runway to see exactly what’s underneath there and from that we can determine how much money it is going to cost us just to upgrade the facility,” Mr Martinson said. “It always depends on how much you can upgrade to what sort of planes you are going to get in, so there is still a lot of work to be done yet.” Mr Martinson said the surveys will help determine the amount of use for the Renmark Airport and the
extent of the upgrade required for the runway. “Even the Mildura flights going through to Adelaide, we will be able to see whether there is a case or an argument for numbers that may be using it to get them to stop here at Renmark,” he said. “Because there is a lot of money involved, you don’t want the thing to get up and running and then all of a sudden stop. “It needs to be an ongoing commitment from everybody that they are prepared to use that facility or do use it now and you would think that would increase as time goes by.” The surveys can be found on the council website at www.renmarkparinga.sa.gov.au

Barmera eight-year-old Gavin Centofanti has experienced cancer first hand and is urging people to...
Join Light the Night to raise funds FOR eight-year-old Gavin Centofanti and his family, this weekend’s Light the Night Community Walk in Renmark is close to their hearts. Shortly after Gavin turned three years of age he became unwell and was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The Barmera family’s lives were turned upside down when the realisation set in and Gavin was required to travel to Adelaide for treatment. “We had to move to Adelaide for nine and a half months of intensive treatment, so it was a long time, and he’s only just finished his treatment last May, Gavin’s mother Alex said. “We had to move to Adelaide and leave family home, my other son had just turned five and it was his first week at school. “So you are very torn and sometimes when your child is so sick and you can’t do anything you just need people to be there for you. “Because we ran our own business it made it even harder,
my husband had to be up here working and operating a business because we had to keep our people employed. The Leukaemia Foundation came to the aid of the Centofanti family providing accommodation and help required. “People don’t realise that when you have to move to Adelaide with a blood cancer that you need to sometimes live away from home, Alex said. “The accommodation that they (Leukaemia Foundation) are providing, they have units now but not enough, is a really big help to Riverland people. Alex said Gavin is now in remission after three and a half years of treatment. “He’s completed his treatment and he doesn’t have to go to Adelaide as often but he still has to have regular blood tests and checkups, she said. “It means that he’s healthy and he has another five years until they say he’s cured. 400-year-old Roman relic visits Barmera RIVERLANDERS were given a rare chance last week to witness a 400-year-old Catholic relic of the right arm of Saint Francis Xavier. Travelling all the way from its home in Rome, the relic arrived at Barmera’s Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Friday. Guardian of the relic Father Richard Shortall said the relic has had an impact on those who have witnessed it during the Australian wide tour. “It’s moving and in some ways quite overwhelming just to see the impact it has on people, the long queues of people from all different ethnic backgrounds and particularly Anglo Saxon Australians, the way they come and kneel before it and they all like to touch the plexiglass case that surrounds it, he said. “He (Saint Francis Xavier) was a Jesuit, one of the founders of our order, it is a great privilege to be the one who brings the relic, especially in rural areas and to smaller communities. Riverland Catholic parishes moderator Father Steve Ardill
said the relic’s visit to Barmera was significant because the local church is the only one in the Port Pirie Diocese which is dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier. “The relic is normally housed in Rome and it’s only the third time in its 400-year history that it has been outside of Rome and Australia is the furthest place it has ever travelled, he said. “It’s an amazing honour to think that something that’s travelling the length and breadth of our country and going to significant sites where Xavier is honoured, that it would come here to Barmera. Students from Riverland Catholic primary schools were given the opportunity to see the relic during its 24 hour visit and listen to the story of Saint Francis Xavier from Melbourne Jesuit priest Father Shortall. “It’s really good for our young people just to have that experience and to be in the presence of and to pray in the presence of the relic, Father Ardill said. Parish Pastoral Council chairman John Beech said it was a great honour to have the

Riverland Wine Group to showcase region’s alternative drops interstate
Putting local wine on the map THE Riverland Alternative Wine Group will travel interstate on Saturday as it embarks on a journey to establish the region as a premium wine growing area for alternative varieties. A group of innovative Riverland winemakers will take their range of wines to four events across Sydney and Melbourne in order to raise the profile of new alternative varieties of wine being grown in the region. The interstate trip by the Riverland Alternative Wine Group is being called the ‘Riverlution Interstate Tour’. Riverland Alternative Wine Group chairman Ashley Ratcliff said the growing conditions of the Riverland match the Mediterranean and other regions where alternative varieties are grown. “Our ultimate aim is establish the Riverland as the premium wine growing region for grape varieties such as Vermentino, Nero d’Avola, Fiano and Montepulciano, he said. “This tour will help us build recognition interstate of the alternative wine varieties available in the Riverland and I would like to thank the State Government for its support. Ms Gago said. “This initiative by the Riverland Alternative Wine Group will help raise the profile of the Riverland and the premium alternative wine varieties being produced in the region. “Today’s consumers want to know
more about their wine and the people who produce it and these events will help the Riverland’s alternative winemakers to reach out to new markets. “Wine writers, consumers, industry leaders and brand managers in Victoria and New South Wales will have the opportunity to discover the premium alternative wines available. The initiative is being assisted by Primary Industries and Regions SA as part of the State Government’s Premium Food and Wine from our Clean Environment strategy. The Riverland Alternative Wine Group was formed in 2008 to identify, cultivate and make wine from grape varieties that are yet to be accepted in mainstream Australia by wine consumers. New pool manager wants gate numbers to rise THE new manager of the Hayden Stoeckel Swimming Pool in Berri is changing opening times and encouraging more interaction from the public to attract numbers through the gates. Discussion earlier this year around the Berri pool, which opens for the new season tomorrow, focused on major repairs required and the potential need to close the facility for the coming season. However, new manager, Wimm Group proprietor Wayne MacKellar, who takes over the role from the YMCA, said the correct decision was made to keep the facility open after feedback from the public. “We are hoping for a bumper season as far as weather is concerned and it was the public that put pressure on the council to have the facility open, he said. Work has been done to ensure the facility is safe for use in the current season. “As far as the pool itself is concerned, they repainted the whole pool this year

Loxton based Angas Park to remain despite closure of Renmark’s Sunbeam Foods THE Angas Park facility in Loxton will not be impacted by the closure of the dried fruit giants’ premises in Renmark, which currently employs 10 people. Manassen Foods, the overarching body of Angas Park and Sunbeam Foods, last week announced that the nut processing and packaging plant in Renmark, operating under the name Sunbeam Foods, will close by December 31. The historic Angas Park dried fruit processing facility in Angaston was also announced to close. A spokesperson for Manassen Foods said Angas Park in Loxton will not be affected by the changes to the Renmark facility.
Renmark Paringa Council Mayor Neil Martinson said he received a letter last week informing him of the closure. “It’s always disappointing when you lose another business to your community, he said. “It just creates that uncertainty for those people that are working there and for them to try and spend some time looking for another job to try and stay in Renmark. Mr Martinson said not only will staff at the processing facility be impacted but also the businesses Sunbeam Foods uses. “There is obviously going to be a loss of income for storage and some transport ancillaries that are part of that project as

Manassen Foods chief executive Geoff Erby said the closure is part of “a broader realignment of its
operations. “This has been an extremely difficult decision for Manassen Foods and one which has not been taken lightly, he said. “The Australian dried fruits industry as a whole is suffering as the market continues to choose lower cost imports ahead of our own locally grown and processed product.

SOLAR NEWS HELP, I Just got my power bill! Most of us would have already received our September Quarterly power bill. If you have not as-yet, then you are in for a rude shock! There are some significant price rises integrated into most bills in the form of increased supply charges and higher rates per kWh. If your home uses air-conditioning a great deal in the Summer months, you will unfortunately experience more pain when you get your next quarterly bill. Now really is a good time to act. Install solar as soon as possible and you will reap the benefits immediately. If you have been contemplating “Going Solar” for some time, don’t put it off any longer. Your system will start paying itself off faster if you get it installed before our peak Solar Season of Summer. A good Solar Company should be able to have your system approved and installed on your roof within 2-3 weeks of sign-up and have local consultants. Whilst there is some urgency at this time, make sure you research your prospective Solar Company thoroughly, with particular attention paid to their Quality Assurance, C.E.C accreditation and whether they have a long history in the Solar Industry.

THE Credit Union Christmas Pageant royal family turned heads during a regional visit to the Riverland last week. The group, including King Matt Jenkins and Queen Rabiah Salah, visited Renmark Primary School and the Riverland Special School, as well as St Catherine’s nursing home during the two day tour. For one member of the pageant’s royal family prince Mat Koenig, the Riverland visit was extra special as he grew up and attended school in the region. Pageant Queen Rabiah Salah said locals were excited to see the group in the region. “It’s always been positive because they just think the royal family coming to visit is just great,” she said.
It was an extensive interview and voting process that it took to choose the king and queen and the royal family. “I’m so excited, I’d never thought I’d have the opportunities I’ve had and get to be such an ambassador for an amazing event,” Rabiah said. King Matt Jenkins said spreading the message about the November 10 Christmas pageant to regional areas is important. “Obviously in the regional areas some of the kids are not fortunate enough to be able to make it into town on pageant day, so we see it as a really important part of our responsibilities to be able to come out here and spread the magic of the pageant to all of those boys and girls,” he said.

A SMALL community group in Monash is preparing to host another Monash Shindig on Saturday night after it sold out within days last year. One of the event organisers Alison Halupka said this year’s event will have a hillbilly theme, where people are encouraged to dress up “hillbilly style”. Those in attendance are being asked to be creative as there are prizes up for grabs for best dressed on the night. The Monash Shindig includes a three course sit down meal, plus hilarious entertainment provided by a number of local stars. Mrs Halupka said Trevor and Jenny Charity have been great supporters of the event, planning and managing the entertainment and Brian Smith has been the MC each year. The Monash Shindig is run by the Monash & Lone Gum Community Association consisting of eight people, which is also the group that manages the Monash Memorial Hall. “The main purpose of the annual shindig event is as a community get together and to get local people into the Monash Hall to see just what a great venue it is inside after many renovations over a number of years,” Mrs Halupka said. Funds raised from the shindigs are shared between a number of Monash groups including the hall committee, the Monash CFS, the Monash Combined Sporting Clubs and the Monash St Oswald’s Church. This year a major raffle has also been organised with the first prize being a $2000 holiday accommodation voucher Tickets are $5 each and are available at the Berri Newsagency, Monash Store, Monash Club, Mullers Meats and a number of other businesses in Berri and Barmera. Funds raised from the raffle will be used to paint the Monash Hall in the coming year.
Renmark High School hosts first ever Spring Carnival RENMARK High School is holding its inaugural Spring Carnival in conjunction with the Rose Week Festival tomorrow night. “The evening is a chance for families to come along, dine on a range of international foods, browse the many stalls, join in with the auction or participate in a novelty event , all in the pleasant sur-
rounds of the roses at the Renmark High School grounds,” convenor Merridy Zangari. “This isn’t intended to be a major school fundraiser but rather a chance for families to have a night out and to have some fun. “It is also a way that Renmark High can support the Rose Festival with the school’s roses in full bloom.
“There are many different and interesting stalls from jewellery to exotic foods. “We are setting up the central quadrangle like an outdoor cafe and so the event should have a festive air.” An auction is being conducted by the Student Representative Council with major items including
a weekend holiday in Victor Harbour and a weekend for 10 people at Oak Bore up for grabs. Mrs Zangari said the community has been very supportive of the event. “The support from the community has been fantastic with many donations of some interesting things and we are sure that with Tim Jackson as auctioneer, the auc-
tion will be an entertaining feature of the night” she said. Auction items can still be donated prior to the event. The Carnival starts in the central quadrangle of the school at 6pm, with parking available at the Chaffey Theatre or on Nineteenth Street. “All we need now is good weather,” Mrs Zangari said.

USTRALIANS are renowned for their dry sense of humour and cartoonists on newspapers across the country have virtually made a national sport out of poking fun at politicians. But the impact of this lampooning can go beyond a good laugh and a Flinders University academic will be in the Riverland on November 1 to talk about the contribution cartoonists make to the public debate. Associate Professor Haydon Manning, Head of Politics in the School of Social and Policy Studies, will present a public lecture entitled Shaming the Shameless – the Cartoonists’ Craft. Haydon is a frequent media commentator on state and national politics who has particular interest in political cartooning. He will take us into the satirical world of the political cartoonist in Australia drawing on a range of cartoons from the last federal election and classic satirical cartoons. The lecture will illustrate how political cartooning can make a valuable contribution to public debate. This free public lecture is open for all and will be held at 6pm on Thursday, November 1 in the Riverview Lounge at the Berri Resort Hotel. The School of Social and Policy Studies at Flinders University offers educational programs in the areas of politics, public policy, social work, sociology and women’s studies. THE Riverland Motorsport Club is calling on the public to attend this weekend’s Riverland Auto Expo as it raises funds towards the establishment of the region’s very first driver education and drag strip facility. With more than 40 entries so far for the Show and Shine, car lovers are being encouraged to attend the popular event in numbers. Gates open to the public at 10am at Berri Oval Number Two on Saturday with one of the main attractions to be the So-Cal Roadster, travelling to the event from Queensland. Vehicles including classic

On Sunday, a cruise from the Loxton Club from 10am will head through Renmark and Berri before finishing at Barmera with a barbecue lunch on the lake front. Riverland Auto Expo organiser Cheryle Taylor said funds raised from the event will go towards the proposed driver education and drag strip facility in Barmera. “The Auto Expo brings in a lot of visitors to the area
and support for our driver education and drag strip we are fighting for,” she said. “It’s good to see we’ve got some big car names that are supporting us.” There will be something for the whole family with food, bric-a-brac and craft stalls at the Show and Shine. “We are having a push bike display this year we are asking all the kids to dress up their push bike and there will be prizes for that,” she said. “That’s a $2 donation and whoever wins it, whichever school the child is from, the money raised from that will go back to that school.”

Preparation is the best weapon By AMP Financial Planner Danny Kearney, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional “YOU have cancer” are words that you never want to hear but if you do, you can be faced with questions like, why me? What will happen to my family? How do I fight this? How much will it cost? How will my family cope financially if I can’t work or, worse yet, if I don’t survive? According to the Cancer Council of Australia, cancer is the second leading cause of death with approximately 43,000 people estimated to have died from the disease in Australia in 2010 and about 114,000 new cases diagnosed during the year. Being told that you have cancer is a big enough blow to your mind, body, emotions and overall spirit without having to worry about your finances. As a person living with cancer, your first priority is to get well again and spend as much time with your loved ones as possible. However, it can be hard to concentrate on these priorities when you have bills to pay, a family to feed and mounting medical costs. Many people believe that taking out life insurance is for the aged, those who are ill, have children or are thinking about retiring. This is a myth. An illness like cancer can strike when you least expect it and one of the most responsible actions you can take is to be financially prepared. Similar to private health insurance, taking out life insurance when
you are young and healthy ensures lower premiums for the lifetime of your policy. So what life insurance policies should you be considering?
pay for medical expenses, repay major debts and ensure that you are looked after in the future.
Trauma Cover
DEATH cover works by making a lump sum payment to your family if you were to die, or, under some policies, are diagnosed with a terminal illness. It offers you the security that if the unexpected were to happen, your family would have financial protection. For anyone who has large debts such as a mortgage, it is important to take out death cover, irrespective of your age. Making sure you have the right cover will help give you peace of mind now and financial support in the unfortunate incident that you experience disability, illness or death. If you would like professional advice about which life insurance option is most suitable for you and your family, you could consider consulting with an accredited financial planner. Your financial planner will investigate how much cover you currently have and how much you should have by taking into consideration your personal circumstances and needs.
TRAUMA Cover provides a lump sum payment if you’re diagnosed with a specified trauma condition. Trauma Cover is designed to help pay for your medical costs and living expenses, providing you with some financial security during the important recovery process. The types of conditions that Trauma Cover may cover you for include: heart attack, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, major organ transplant, severe burns, cancers, dementia and stroke or paralysis.
Income Protection INCOME Protection, also known as salary continuance, usually pays a monthly benefit of up to 75 per cent of your regular income if you’re too sick or injured to work. This type of insurance is designed to help you continue to pay the mortgage, children’s school fees, utility bills and buy food, clothes and other day-to-day expenses.
Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) TPD cover provides a lump sum payment if you become totally and permanently disabled. This cover will usually help you

P et s Pet dental hygiene important OUR canine and feline companions had ancestors that caught and ate their food - fur, flesh and all which was a great way to ensure their teeth stayed in good working order. Today, four out of five dogs and cats over the age of three years have some sort of dental disease. Ve t e r i n a r i a n s are encouraging pet owners to have their furry friends checked for tooth trouble on a regular basis. Dr Christine Hawke, President of the Australian Veterinary Association’s Dental Society, said that pets often don’t show pain which can make it difficult for owners to detect problems. “Even pets with sore gums, infected mouths and broken teeth will continue to eat, she said. So how can you tell if your dog or cat has a toothache? “Your pet’s breath should not smell bad, Dr Hawke said. Bad breath is a sign of infection. Other problem signs include inflamed and red gums and teeth that are stained with tartar Vets recommend annual health checks which include dental check-ups.
These help to ensure that bacteria and poisons from dental infections do not spread to the heart, liver and kidneys through the bloodstream.
Regular tooth brushing is also recommended. “Although bones are a popular treat used by many for dental care, they can cause problems such
as broken teeth and gut obstructions, Dr Hawke said. “Regular tooth brushing and dental chews are safer and more effective options for dental care.

Kart racing to grow
■ ACTION: TrophyKarts fly through the Loveday course. Photo: DANNY HANRAHAN
■ THE growing sport of racing TrophyKarts in Australia will be a full time feature at the Loveday 4x4 Adventure Park next year after a succesful inaugural meet on the weekend. About 15 karts competed in a series of races around a customised track at the Adventure Park with two locals excelling. Loveday’s Toby Whateley dominated the 200cc class, while Waikerie’s Toby Francombe showed plenty of courage taking out the open 450cc class. Loveday 4x4 Adventure Park owner Tony Whateley said a three race series is being planned for next year with a big event to round out the season in August, 2013. “It’s going to be a huge, huge sport for us,” he said. Meanwhile, more than 1000 spectators are expected to head to the Loveday 4x4 Adventure
Park this weekend for the annual 4x4 Challenge. To date, 45 cars have registered to compete with plenty of action on the cards. The event kicks off on Saturday at 10.30am with three heats and the action begins on Sunday at 10am with three heats, followed by finals. Those in attendance have the option of camping overnight and enjoying the entertainment on offer. Mr Whateley said the 4x4 Challenge is well known and attracts spectators and competitiors from across Australia. “You are going to see 4WDs flying through the air constantly,” he said. “It’s that bigger picture that the Riverland is being found by what we are doing out here.” For more information visit www.loveday4x4adventures.com

Veteran driver in box seat ■ VETERAN dinghy driver John Chigros is the only competitor in this Saturday’s final round of the 2012 Hutchins Loan Centre Riverland Championship, the Hunchee Run, that would have been able to confidently clear another spot in his trophy cabinet for this year’s trophy in his class. Chigros already has a stranglehold on the 300cc class and despite double points being available during the weekend’s two leg 87 kilometre course, he is in no danger of being overtaken. The Hunchee Run is in a time trial format with boats starting from the Renmark Club waterfront at 10am, a minute apart in the order they finished the annual Dinghy Derby. In theory then, they should leave in speed order with all boats able to operate in ‘clean’ water and really go full out. In the Open Sports class, Ben Thur and Reece Glazbrook converted consistent performances in the cham-
Recognising our sporting legends ■ WE ARE only a month away from inducting the inaugural five sports people into a Riverland Legends of Sport category at the annual Riverland Sportsperson of the Year dinner. Audrey Hefford, the late Sue Fieldhouse, Grant Schubert, Luke Prokopec and Mark Ricciuto have been chosen from a formidable list of champions who started their careers in our region and their induction will be formalised during the dinner at the Berri Resort Hotel on Friday, November 23. The Riverland Legends of Sport was developed from proposals for a Hall of Fame that were bandied about over 12 months ago. Discussions at the time included an actual building to display memorabilia or perhaps separate displays in individual towns. As it turned out there was sufficient interest in the matter that it was placed on the agenda for a meeting of the Riverland council’s joint forum. After much discussion it was agreed that a website may satisfy the task of accumulating the records of our sporting greats and display them for the world to see. But following that

■ IDEA: One of the ideas suggested to honour our legends of sport. meeting, reflection on the discussions that took place highlighted problems with having the individual towns concur on a joint approach to any such format and also raised doubts of any real benefits to the district that the wonders of the electronic age would produce, particularly with regards to tourism. Mind you, a designated website may have a part to play in an overall legends picture but here we appeared to have agreement that while promoting the magnificent sports people the Riverland has produced was a good idea, how this could be best produced for the enjoyment of both locals and visitors to the area presented a problem. Frankly the proposal looked like going nowhere

until the issue attracted the interest of the manager of Riverland Radio Cheryl Lardner, who agreed it could be another addition in some way to the awards made at the annual Sportsperson of the Year dinner. A meeting was then called at the radio station office with those present, including a number of local sporting identities, plus the mayor of Renmark Paringa Council Neil Martinson and the mayor of Berri Barmera Council Peter Hunt. With an apology from Loxton Waikerie mayor Leon Stasinowsky, councillor Trevor Norton, who had put forward a proposal for the individual towns to have common plaque style displays in appropriate

pionship series into a lead on the points table when they cleaned up in the last round, the Enduro. They lead defending champion Jason Gordon and his crewman Ben Pobke by four points and with Gordon reportedly on track to give it his all after being severely limited by a back injury in the Enduro, it is a fair bet to say ‘the race is on’. Gordon is certain to welcome any calm, clean water as he recovers from surgery and is perhaps unfortunate that in this sport he cannot order a heavy roller onto the playing surface. Also waiting to pounce should the two leaders have any misfortune are West Australian visitors Jay Branson
and Byron Jane, who sit eight points behind Gordon. The Open Sports Rookies class is also still up for grabs as Mr Consistent Matt Lang, with Callum Benda, heads the very unlucky Gary O’Ciepa by only 13 points. Unless Shane Palat has some major problems in a big field in the Super Standards class, it is unlikely second placed Matt Pearce can make up a 13 point deficit. However, the real interest is in third place as up to four boats are in a bottle neck for the position. Matt Schwartzkopff is nine points ahead of Aaron Richards in 30HP Standard and in 25HP Standard Tyler Bleasby from the Mallee is locked on 44 points with Dean Beer. Those two classes, as well the overall championship winner, will be announced at Saturday night’s presentations at the Renmark Club. Bookings for the presentation function are essential by phoning the Renmark Club on 8586 6611.

spots to acknowledge their legends, attended. In short, the gathering agreed with mayor Hunt that promoting the Riverland as the home of’ its sporting champions could have definite benefits, including as a tourist attraction. From that, Cheryl Lardner confirmed that as part of such a venture her station was prepared to add a Riverland Legends of Sport category to the 5RM – SGIC – Berri Resort Hotel Riverland Sportsperson of the Year awards. Further the meeting agreed that as inductions were made, the details of the legends acknowledged could be passed on to the Riverland joint council forum and individual councils for their attention and consideration of further action. Perhaps even with common physical displays eventually finding their way into the home towns of the inductees.? It is my understanding that Cheryl Lardner will now be formally advising the local council bodies of the inaugural inductees for 2012-13. It will be interesting to see whether anything develops from there.

Loxton RSL makes its mark ■IT TOOK only two matches for the new 2012-13 additions to division one of men’s pennant bowls, Loxton RSL, to record its first win of the season when on its home greens last Saturday it defeated Renmark RSL by ten shots, 78 to 64. Decisive in the end result was the rink skippered by Steven Rose and including former Loxton Tigers’ ruckman Jade Wright, Paul Hopper and Glen Saint who defeated John Van Der Wyst’s four bowlers, 24 to 14. This was the second big scalp in as many outings for Rose’s team, despite some reported discomfort as its members take on a new distinctive look towards ‘Movember’. In its debut in division one a week earlier, Rose’ men defeated Craig Treloar’s Berri unit. With the rivalry being built up between Loxton and Renmark RSL teams, it probably would be an opportunity for a cup to be presented each season in a rivalry round or similar. Naming it of course would need due diligence. Meanwhile, one of Loxton RSL’s younger brigade who has made an
impressive start to his career and is the current club champion, Craig Inglis won through to the final eight when sectional play was held for the State Open Singles Championship at Barmera on Sunday. Craig was one of six players in the eight sections to win all three games and he will play Berri’s Graham King in a quarter final at Barmera this Sunday. In other matches, Freeling’s R Ratish will meet Barmera’s Alan Ness, Dennis Treloar (Berri) is up against Chris Rule (Lyndoch) and Craig Treloar plays Dennis Wutke (Barmera). Ratish, Ness, Rule, Craig Treloar and Wutke were last Sunday’s other three game winners, while Dennis Treloar advanced on shots over Barmera’s Dave Mills and Chris Rofe and King did likewise against Barmera’s Tony Szabo in their section. There were some keenly fought matches in the sectional rounds, but in the end the cream rose to the top, ensuring some quality bowls this Sunday. The Loxton RSL bowls club will host a match against the state RSL

team this Sunday as the visitors prepare for their interstate carnival. The SA RSL team contains a number of former state bowlers so this is an ideal opportunity for the Loxton RSL players to further their preparation for the local first division competition by challenging this calibre of bowler. However, organiser Glen Saint said that there is also room for any bowlers from other clubs to be part of the event, which will involve two games. The $16 fee will include a luncheon and high tea. Contact Glen on 8584 6083 for further details. Also, the Loxton RSL club Liquor Trades Day is set down for October 30 with entries invited for teams of four.

John Eshman with ‘Talisman’ ahead of Robin Bawden with ‘Merlin’ in division one, Miscellaneous Cats and Belinda and Ellyn Cale, aboard Pacer 7, from Tim and Josh Ridley and Sea Chook in division two, Pacers. Also, a reminder that the popular sail training
sessions will start for the season at the LBYC at 10am on Saturday, December 10. The club’s holdfast trainer and pacer yachts are used for these sessions so all age groups are catered for. More information is available from Steve Thomas on 8588 8005.
Barmera Gun Club members on target at Masters Games â– THE Central Masters Games held in Alice Springs only ended on the weekend but there is already news that a host of medals came back with competitors from this area. Included were two members of the Barmera Gun Club, Peter Brister and Jim Pankhurst. Peter competed in the 55 to 64-year-old B grade age division and with a score of 71/75, won gold in a Continental Points Score event, gold in a 50 Target Double Barrel shoot with 50/50 and achieved a third
gold with 23/25 in a Single Barrel event. A score of 28/30 also gave Peter bronze in a 30 Target Handicap. Jim won four gold medals in the over 64 years C grade, one in a Continental Point Score with 70/75, in a 50 Target Double Barrel with 46/50, a Single Barrel with 24/25 and a 30 Target Mixed with 26/30. Also in conjunction with the Masters Games, the Alice Springs Gun Club conducted its Alice Open and Peter and Jim both won trophies in that competition in the B
grade and C grade 50 Target Double Barrel and 75 Target Points Score events. Jim also took out High Gun Honours in the C grade. The Riverland’s sole representative in cycling, Bob Panhkhurst, Jim’s brother, also grabbed a heap of goldmedals when he dominated the 70 to 74 age group. The 71-year-old Riverland Cycling Club stalwart also showed his versatility with his gold medals coming from events like a road race, flying 200, scratch race, match sprint and street sprint.

Jaensch claims first up victory in Riverland Cycling championships conditions made for a difficult race and most of the bunch remained intact until the half way turn around point as a tail wind saw speeds up to 50 kilometres per hour. The second half of the race then became a real slog into the wind and a group broke away and reached the fin-
ish line in the order of Steve Jaensch, Chris Gartery, Shane Pitman and Peter Schammer. At the Tuesday night criterium meeting there were 22 entries across five grades. A grade was won by Jaensch from Jacob Otto and Pitman, B grade went to Colin Gordon.

Waikerie Gold bounce back
■RIVERLAND Softball will have one senior competition when it opens the season this Saturday involving eight teams, two from both Loxton and Cobdogla and the others from Gerard, Waikerie, Lyrup and Berri. While not represented at senior level, Renmark will have teams in the junior competitions. A number of local players had an earlier start to the season when they competed at last week’s Central Masters Games in Alice Springs. A Central Districts team that was boosted by players from Cobdogla won gold medals in their section, while the Riverland Rats, made up of current and former locals, brought home bronze. The Riverland Association is still pushing ahead with its proposal to introduce a competition for men into its program. For further information contact Mary Geddie on 8582 2520.
â– A match winning all round performance by new skipper Brad Gay saw reigning premier Waikerie Gold quickly put behind them the concerns of the previous week when a shortage of players caused it to forfeit on the weekend. Waikerie Gold 5 for 112 (Gay 36no, R Carter 29 retired) defeated Morgan 109 (D Sutherland 45, M Baddack 25, Gay 4 for 22, J Walding 3 for 11). In the other game, Perponda won its first match since entering the competition this season with 8 for 158 to Blanchetown Swan Reach 9 for 148. Josh Rudiger scored another 71 for Perponda making his 2012-13 aggregate for his two outings so far exactly 200, while for BSR, N Salter 46, M Martinson 41 and T Cowland 55, led the scoring and R Zadow took 3/5 for Perponda to record the best bowling figures.

AFTER a number of complaints about playing conditions at the Barmera Recreation Centre, work was completed last week to bring the facility in line with international standards. New Basketball lining, needed to bring the facility up to FIBA requirements, was undertaken and the court is also receiving a new, much needed resurfacing. The Barmera Basketball Association has applauded the Berri Barmera Council on its commitment to the Barmera Recreation Centre. “The previous management of the facility did little to keep the court in proper working order,” Barmera Basketball Association president Karen Scordo said. “The basketball club received a number of complaints from other clubs and made many of its own due to the court being slippery. “It was long overdue for resurfacing and it is fantastic that the council has shown commitment to not only basketball but all users of the court. “Since the previous managers of the facility have left, we are really happy to have seen immediate improvements with the cleanliness of the court and the facility being top of the list. “The council is doing a fantastic job in hard circumstances” The under 16 men and division one and two women’s and men’s teams tested the new court this week. “It has a great look and feel to it, very pleased,”star Lakers guard Kenny Wright said. New player and physiotherapist Marc Elliott said the court is now much safer. “It is great that the council has done this, since I have started here I have seen a few injuries as a result of the playing surface,” he said. “This work should significantly reduce the risk of injury.” The Lakers’ division one men and women will play their first game on the new court at Barmera tonight.
