By BRAD PERRY AFTER four years under the banner of the Murray River, the South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) has agreed to print 70,000 Riverland branded visitor guides for 2013 in a major victory for the region. After more than a year of discussions with SATC, Destination Riverland made an important breakthrough with the decision for the region to have its own tourism guide granted once again. Destination Riverland chief executive Tony Sharley said having a specific Riverland guide will help attract more people to the region. “It means the Riverland guide

will be solely Riverland content, instead of 90,000 of the original Murray River guide being produced, there will be 70,000 Riverland guides produced,” he said. “Those 70,000 guides will go to travel centres all over Australia and particularly in South Australia. “I think it is all about getting our brand out there but not only that, the publication itself will be less confusing. “You will be able to see clearly where our region is, you'll be able to find the experiences that occur in our region and I just think it gives us stronger regional branding and stronger promotional capacity for the Riverland and I think we can expect it to work better for us in terms of attracting visitors.” Led by Destination Riverland chair Joan Hall, discussions with the state's peak tourism body have been held since October last year to bring back the Riverland guide. “Previously the guide had two sections, one on the Riverland and one on Murraylands but we all came under the banner Murray River,” Mr Sharley said.

George Aldridge’s relevant cartoons

THE cartoon on the front page of today’s Riverland Weekly was produced by George Aldridge as cartoonistin-residence with the Riverland Horticultural Council Inc. in 1992. The project was assisted by both the Australia Council, the Federal Governments’ Art Funding and Advisory body and the Regional Cultural Council of SA. This particular cartoon was part of a catalogue of artwork based on the Riverland, helping to increase the awareness in other regions about the concerns of the Riverland. By the end of the project, it was classed as an “unqualified success”. Mr Aldridge’s cartoons are still very relevant today.

PREDICTED above average temperatures over the next three months has prompted the Country Fire Service to issue a warning to Riverland and Mallee residents about the need to plan for the coming fire season. With a large number of vacant blocks scattered across the region and a high fuel load, residents are being told to prepare for the risk of bushfire. SA Country Fire Service principal communications officer Neil Charter said that rainfall in previous months has built up fuel loads. “We have been fortunate over the past two summers and what has happened with the relatively mild conditions and the higher rainfall is that we’ve had unusually high growth,” he told the Riverland Weekly. “This has compounded the problem for this year that we are now facing that across the state we’ve got high fuel loads. “In all regional centres, the fringe areas are at risk as well and just because we live within an urban

season in the Riverland beginning on November 15. Mr Charter said neighbours need to liaise with each other to help prevent any fire outbreaks. “Any block that’s unkept and starts to get high fuel loads poses a risk,” he said. “It’s very important that you actually engage with your neighbours to know what people are doing on their blocks and to share information about fire risk and talk about what you are going to do.” Fifty percent of people who live in high bushfire risk areas remain oblivious to their risk and SA Country Fire Service Bushfire Action Week manager Bill Nehmy said putting in place a contingency plan is important. “Everyone has a responsibility, it is not just the CFS’ responsibility, individuals, community groups, organisations, businesses, everyone has a role to play in partnership in respect to the challenge of the risk of bushfires,” he said. Bushfire Action Week began on Sunday and will run until Saturday.

Understandably it is about funding but the impact that a single fruit fly outbreak can have is widespread, as we have seen by the damage previously interstate and in Adelaide. The Riverland is proud to have a fruit fly free status and it is vitally important that we keep it, as it opens up doors for fruit exports. What was once an Australian wide approach to preventing

SINCE the Riverland’s last fruit fly outbreak 21 years ago, there has never been a time when so much pressure has been put on the state to prevent the pest entering our boundaries. I am still trying to understand how the other states can afford to drop their measures when it comes to fruit fly protection.

fruit fly appears to be slowly diminshing. Now it seems the burden will fall on the shoulders of South Australia to keep the pest out of the state’s primary production areas. Where once we shook hands on fruit fly agreements, all that can be done now by other states is to send out warnings to travellers to watch the produce you bring in.

It is understood that the Riverland has about 470 fruit fly traps that are checked weekly during the peak seasons. It is good news that the Pinnaroo Quarantine Station will open a month earlier due to the heightened fruit fly risk but does more need to be done? As the other states drop their guard, let’s hope that we can keep our feared foe out of the region.

Coming Soon! RECENT deaths of Australian soldiers serving overseas has been too close to home for former serviceman Jason O’Malley. The former member of the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, an infantry unit based in Townsville, has felt the impact of war. “I’ve probably had at least 10 mates I’ve served with die in Afghanistan,” Mr O’Malley said. As a result, Mr O’Malley wanted to help as much as he could, organising a Riverland Stomp on Australia Day next year. War veterans and the public are being invited to participate in a 20.5 kilometre walk from the Post World War II Memorial in Berri to the Loxton Cross of Sacrifice. “The whole point of the stomp is it is not a race, it is walk-

Waste giant’s eight year contract BERRI Barmera Council has awarded Queensland based waste giant Transpacific Industries an eight year contract to collect kerbside rubbish across the district. The long term contract means the company will collect waste during the first year at a cost of about $220,000 for residual, $170,000 for recycling and $63,000 for green waste. Berri Barmera Council chief executive officer David Beaton said the length of the contract is

typical in the waste collection industry. “Seven or eight years is the standard time and it allows the people who are awarded the contract to buy the vehicles to support it because generally that is about as long as one of those trucks will last,” he said. “They will be collecting the three lots of waste that we have, so there will be the weekly residual, the recycling and the green waste. “The contract we have awarded is for the

collection and the contractors are still doing some work with the three councils on how we might be able to dispose of it.” Council has also accepted the tender of Superior Pak for the provision and roll out of the garbage bins, which came in under budget at a cost of almost $363,000. “We believe that they will start rolling them out on December 3 to try and finish by December 14,” Mr Beaton said.

Mr O’Malley said the Barossa has also been invited to participate in the stomp. “We are reaching out to the Barossa now as well after the death of Corporal Smith,” he said. Fellow organiser Rob Sherriff, who also served alongside Mr O’Malley, said the event is personally important to him. “If you can’t be there with them, you’ve got to try and do something to help them or help their families at least,” he said. “It complements the work we are doing right now where we are about to launch a new Riverland brand and that brand will sit on the guide as well,” he said. “The Murray River is quite a political topic, so we want this guide to feature the actual destination that we are trying to promote, which is Riverland. “Whilst the River Murray is our greatest asset, it's all about promoting the region and the businesses in the region, so we’ve argued very strongly for that.”

Car stolen and set on fire A Berri man and Barmera woman were arrested on Sunday after they allegedly stole a vehicle and set it on fire after crashing it. The 33-year-old and 26-year-old were arrested and charged with offences including illegal use of a motor vehicle and arson. It is alleged they had stolen the vehicle from the womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s address and then set it on fire after crashing it on Dunstone road at Barmera. Both will appear in court at a later date.

Fruit fly pressures WITH increased pressure of a fruit fly outbreak in South Australia following deregulation of measures interstate, a Riverland emergency plan is being updated for the first time in what is believed to be almost a decade. Biosecurity SA hosted a meeting with industry representatives in Loxton last week to discuss the fruit fly pressure on the region. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to get the Riverland Fruit Fly Committee back together, they are responsible for providing input to a contingency, emergency response plan should we have a fruit fly outbreak in the Riverland,â&#x20AC;? Biosecurity SA plant and food standards manager Geoff Raven said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We certainly update the one for greater South Australia on an annual basis but we havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had a chance to do the Riverland one in the past few years, so this a good opportunity to get that done.â&#x20AC;? Mr Raven, who also chaired the meeting, said several important issues were discussed including contingency arrangements, what industry and local government could provide if there was an outbreak and what role councils could play. Mr Raven said there are plans to organise a desktop exercise scheduled early next year to run a scenario if a fruit fly outbreak occurred. He said there are still a number of areas to be addressed.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is the whole issue of disposal of green waste down here, if we had an outbreak,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just say if it happened where weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got green waste collection in the Riverland, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an issue on how that can be disposed of. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is also an issue if it happens in the middle of orchards or production areas, there is going to be a lot of fallen fruit, so we would need to dispose of that.â&#x20AC;? South Australian Fresh Fruit Growers Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tim Grieger, who attended the meeting last week, said there is concern about the actions of other states when it comes to fruit fly measures. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It certainly does cause us concern,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We value our fruit fly free status enormously and it gives us access to markets that we otherwise wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have so it is important to maintain that. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The changes interstate have heightened our awareness of the risk and what we need to do to do our best to manage that risk.â&#x20AC;? The State Government will now meet with the local government and industry groups to update the contingency plan through a series of drafts.

Courses help Riverlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chef shortage A SHORTAGE of chefs in the Riverland is being addressed under a program by the State Government aimed at providing free qualifications. Since the introduction of the State Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s free courses under the Skills for All program earlier this year, TAFE SA Berri commercial cookery lecturer Alistair Ferguson said the interest has certainly risen. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely a shortage, we get asked by businesses a couple of times a week looking for staff,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A decline in the number of apprentices due to the economic climate over the past few years has seen a skills shortage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the Skills for All program gives people the opportunity to come in, have a look at the industry, try it and see whether it is for them.â&#x20AC;? Helper wanted for Renmark Club Christmas Pageant THE organising committee for this year’s Renmark Club Christmas Pageant is searching for someone to help in Santa’s Cave. Committee spokesperson Darren Letton said children line-up to see Santa to sit on his lap and have a photo taken. However, the search is still on for a volunteer to perform the role in Santa’s Cave. The route will also change for this year’s pageant, starting at 6.30pm at the Renmark Hotel and finishing in the same spot. Three youths throw missiles THREE Riverland youths have been arrested and charged with throwing missiles in Loxton. A 17-year-old Berri woman, a 17-yearold man from Renmark and a 16-yearold Loxton woman were all arrested and charged with throwing missiles in Loxton at about 8.50pm on Sunday. It is alleged that the three of them had been involved in throwing stones at the Loxton Backpackers Harvest Trail Lodge in Loxton. All of the youths were bailed to appear in the Berri Youth Court at a later date.

Residents encouraged to volunteer RIVERLAND residents from culturally or linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds are being urged to join local emergeny service brigades. Minister for Emergency Services and Multicultural Affairs Jennifer Rankine said the SA Fire and Emergency Services Commission (SAFECOM), with support from the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission (SAMEAC), will host a community information evening in Renmark next week. “There are a number of different volunteering roles in the Country Fire Service and State Emergency Service,” Ms Rankine said. “It is an excellent way to learn new skills and play a pivotal role in keeping our communities safe.” The idea for the event was developed by chairman of the SAMEAC Hieu Van Le, in con-

junction with SAFECOM and Volunteering SA. Mr Le said joining the emergency services is a wonderful way to learn new skills, make friends and be part of a team. Ms Rankine said volunteering with emergency services is not always about attending fires and car crash scenes. “There are a wide variety of non-operational roles as well,” she said. “These include answering radios, managing logistics and administrative work.” Local volunteers will be at the information evening at the Renmark Hotel on November 8 at 7pm for a 7.30pm start to talk about their own volunteering experiences. Lions Club Convention held in the Riverland THE Riverland Lions Clubs of Barmera, Berri, Loxton, Morgan, Pinnaroo, Renmark and Waikerie will host the 12th District 201C2 Lions Convention in Renmark this weekend, which is expected to attract over 300 delegates from across Australia. The Convention will be officially opened by Member for Chaffey Tim Whetstone, at a ceremony at the Chaffey Theatre from 7.30pm on Friday. Special guests and speakers will be on hand during the opening and it will also incorporate a flag ceremony and a special presentation by the Riverland Youth Theatre group. The Convention Business Sessions will be conducted at the Chaffey Theatre on Saturday. Partners of delegates will be

involved in a tour of the region whilst the business sessions are happening. Bert Dix Park, Paringa, will be the location of a breakfast on Sunday morning and a remembrance ceremony for Lions members/partners who have passed away during the year will be held after breakfast at 10am, followed by the Convention Closing Ceremony. Convention Chairman Allan Maddocks said members of the host clubs will be assisting with the running of the Convention. “The Convention will be a big boost for our Riverland economy with delegates and partners staying at a range of accommodation locations in various towns over this busy weekend when there are several other events happening in the Riverland,” he said.

Mid Murray’s chicken farm REGIONAL Development Australia Murraylands and Riverland chief executive Brenton Lewis has revealed that an $80 million proposed free range chicken farm to be located in the Mid Murray Council area could have easily moved interstate. Initially the investor approached the Loxton Waikerie Council about purchasing a property in the district to establish the business venture but problems were met in regards to the availability of the power supply. “We did the introduction to Loxton Waikerie and that was extremely well received by the mayor and CEO in particular, who we sat down with and introduced the developers to,” Mr Lewis said. “They did an excellent job in receiving them and an excellent job in doing everything possible to arrest that investment in the Loxton Waikerie Council area...but unfortunately at the finish the capacity of the electricity they would have

needed to assist the total project was not in the supply line. “(There would have been) enough to get started but it would have impeded the progress of the project in the timelines that they wanted it done and that is a risk they needed to avoid. “They’ve since avoided that by not going ahead at the first site but they’ve identified another site which is across the river. “They believe that their advice from the electricity supplier is that they will have sufficient capacity to undertake the project in the timelines that they originally wanted to do it.” Mr Lewis said the Riverland workforce will be fully utilised in the project and despite strong opposition from Victoria, the investor decided to build in the region. “My understanding, talking to the dealer/principal of the company, was that he had been given assurances through the Victorian gov-

ernment that assistance to augment electricity, in particular, would be done at State Government cost to the site in almost any shire they nominate they want to do it in,” Mr Lewis said. “Whereas in South Australia, whatever that cost is to bring the power to the exact site within the property that they buy will be at their expense and any further upgrades will be at their expense and that could be in the millions of dollars potentially. “(However) we’ve made them aware of the capacity of the region to supply essential services to them, including workforce and we’ve offered to assist them with workforce training and skill development if it’s required.” Construction of the farm is a four year project and is expected to start in the first quarter of 2013 and create a minimum of 50 permanent jobs.

When and where to push the button By DEWNR STAFF THE Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) is responsible for the fire management program on lands under the care of the Minister for Sustainability, Environment and Conservation. The objective of DEWNR’s fire management program is to reduce the impact from bushfires on life, property and the environment. DEWNR uses standard fire management practices such as prescribed burns or mechanical fire breaks to reduce the fuel loads in certain zones. This reduces the risk of large scale bushfires within the reserves and may prevent fires spreading to neighbouring properties. Fire is a natural part of many habitats within the South Australian Murray-Darling Basin (SA MDB). In many cases, it is needed to reset the biological clock and promote a healthy ecosystem. Sometimes, if fire has been absent for long periods, key species such as the Western Whipbird or the Mallee Emu-wren drop out of those habitats. Conversely, other species such as the endangered Malleefowl flourish in old growth environments. This creates a challenge for fire managers within such landscapes, having to decide between burning too much and too little in very complex systems. DEWNR is implementing strategies and trials to learn, adapt and

Kerbside Waste Collection Update This is the fourth article of a fortnightly update regarding the implementation of the new waste collection system to start in January 2013. What can I put in the Recycling Bin (Yellow lid)? The bin is for paper, newspaper, cardboard, cartons, plastic containers, glass bottles, tin and cans. What is not allowed to go into the Recycling Bin? It’s pretty much common sense, but no plastic bags, nappies, garden waste, food scraps, gas bottles, mirrors, light globes or window glass. Should I put the different types of recycling in plastic bags? No, as someone will have to break open the bag when it’s sorted and make it more difﬁcult, it is better if they are loose. The plastic bags are not recyclable. What causes contamination of recycling? It is really important not to put food or other material in the recycling bin as people have to sort the recycling and it is essential that the recycling be clean for their health and welfare and being able to recycle the material. What happens if people forget and put the wrong waste in the recycling? The company doing the collection will have cameras to check the recycling and other waste as it goes in the truck and each bin will be numbered and recorded against the property. Residents will get a reminder in the ﬁrst and second instance but the contractor may be instructed to not collect the rubbish from properties that don’t do the right thing.

Western Whipbirds once inhabited these Conservation Parks but fragmentation and a reduction in fire frequency have resulted in ageing vegetation that is no longer suitable for many species. Small trial burns were implemented and the response of the vegetation is being monitored so DEWNR staff can learn about how the vegetation responds to such burning practices. More of these burns will be conducted in spring and the findings will be used to refine the fire management practices within the region. Waikerie’s top senior KEVIN Morgan has been acknowledged as the winner of the 2012 Waikerie Senior of the Year. The Loxton Waikerie Council and Warrawee Lodge made the announcement during a morning tea at the Waikerie Senior Citizen Hall on Tuesday. Kevin’s community involvement and volunteering commenced in the late 1940s and continues today, resulting in him contributing countless hours to the Waikerie community. At the young age of 17, Kevin began a commitment that lasted 50 years with the Ramco Methodist church manse maintenance board. With his three sons attending Ramco Primary School, Kevin became a devoted committee volunteer who assisted with numerous fundraising events, construction of the swimming pool and as chairman of the Ramco Primary School Council. He has also given long term service to Warrawee Lodge as a member of the board for seven years and as vice chairman prior to being a resident of the village. Kevin and Evelyn moved into Warrawee Lodge upon their retirement and both became involved with the residents’ committee and the social activities that it offers to all residents. Kevin accepted the position of chairperson for several years and was also a committee member.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Highway concerns I AM writing to you in regards to a concern that I have about the intersection coming from Monash highway to the Barmera highway. My concern is that the traffic coming from Monash highway, turning right to head into Barmera, is not giving way to traffic coming from Barmera heading to Berri. On many of occasions I have encountered trucks coming from Monash that will not stop to giveway to the traffic coming from Barmera heading to Berri. I myself have had to slow down or stop to let them through. Today, however, a vehicle was not going to stop to giveway to me that was coming from Monash and I had to apply my brakes quite forcefully to prevent my car from hitting the other car side on. Fortunately they managed to stop in time but the four wheel drive that was too close behind me had to swerve to avoid hitting me from behind. Fund drives change OVER the past twelve months the Federal Labor Government has made one of the biggest investments ever in regional health, education, infrastructure and skills development. The first two rounds of the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF) saw $350 million of Federal Government investment leverage more than $1.2 billion in total investment through partnerships – a multiplier of up to four to one. I recently announced that rounds three and four of RDAF will make available another $225 million in funding from the Minerals Resource Rent Tax (MRRT). Round three will see $50 million dedicated specifically to projects in small towns with a population of 30,000 or less, while round four will distribute $175 million to support strategic infrastructure projects.

RDAF is driving a cultural change in regional funding by focusing on projects that stack-up, leverage investment partnerships, provide strong regional reach and generate significant commercial investment. The first two rounds of RDAF have demonstrated that we have also changed the culture away from porkbarrelling just before an election – a culture the Coalition has said they’ll return to. RDAF represents a funding model driven by community demands, backed by an independent assessment panel and underpinned by investment partnerships. Our regions have a great sense of community, they don’t just want economic outcomes, they also want the social and the environmental context driving regional success. Stronger regions make for a strong nation and only the Federal Labor Government has the vision and commitment to ensure that all of the patches in our patchwork economy benefit in growth. I urge community groups and leaders to persist with projects that missed out in the first two rounds and talk to their Regional Development Australia committee to discuss the sorts of projects that should be put forward for consideration. Let’s bite the bullet IT IS time for all Federal South Australians politicians to get behind the Murray Darling Basin Authority plan. The community has had enough of political posturing and fear mongering.

South Australians understand that the river has not been managed well in the past and the opportunity to put a good plan in place is now before our Federal Parliament. The vision of the former coalition government to commit $5.8 Billion for infrastructure upgrades within the Murray Darling Basin was a great opportunity to improve water use efficiency and productivity throughout the basin. Communities and the environment throughout the Basin will benefit from this investment for generations to come. I fully support the work the MDBA has done to recommend the return of 2750 GL to the River by the 2019 deadline. The extra 450GL commitment and the extra $1.77 Billion made last week by Minister Tony Burke does not change the intent of the MDBA plan. Although I believe through removing constraints and relaxing river operation rules more water will be recovered and more environmental targets will be achieved, the recovery of the 450GL remains an ambition more than a firm commitment. Issues below lock 1 are still to be addressed and should be considered when the plan is presented to Parliament. Salinity targets of a maximum of 1000EC units in Lake Alexandrina and 1500EC in Lake Albert need to be in the plan along with a minimum water height of 0.4m above sea level. These limits need to be committed to in the final plan. As South Australians we need a healthy well managed river, the opportunity is before us to achieve that, it is time to ‘bite the bullet’ and get on with it. HE historic Overland Corner Hotel has teamed up with Woolshed Brewery to release a new beer exclusively on tap at the popular tourist icon. Described as a German style drop, the smoothness of the Woolshed Brewery’s new Summer Ale is sure to impress and keep you coming back. After recently taking over the management of the Overland Corner Hotel, Phil and Renske Reddy worked quickly to establish a partnership with the Riverland’s growing brewery. “It’s a privilege to be able to serve a locally brewed beer,” Phil said. “Everybody that tries this Summer Ale is impressed. “We had some English visitors who came back three times just to drink the Summer Ale.” Phil said having the new beer exclusively on tap in the Riverland has

been brilliant. “It has been a great chance for people to try something different and people have been impressed by the smoothness and light, sweet flavour,” Phil said. Woolshed Brewery owner Tom Freeman said the Summer Ale and the historic Riverland hotel form a partnership that is the “perfect fit”. “The hotel has got such a unique history and I think we complement each other with what we produce,” he said. “For us it was a great chance to give Phil something no-one else had tried.” Tom describes the beer as German Kolsch style, a lightly hopped ale with pilsener like similarities. He said it is easy to drink and perfect to have on the Riverland’s hot summer days. “I think for people it is a great

chance to look at a magnificent pub and a chance to try some beer that you can’t get anywhere else,” Tom said. Woolshed Brewery will also work with Overland Corner Hotel owners Phil and Renske Reddy to produce the historic venue’s own signature beer in the future. Since taking over the hotel, Phil said the public have been very supportive. “People are pleased to see what’s happening and the plans we have,” he said. The hotel is on the verge of releasing a brand new menu which will include an improved Overland Corner signature burger and new desserts, death by chocolate and sticky date pudding. Spring fox baiting benefits everyone Spring fox baiting for ground dwelling birds has occurred again this year. 10,000 baits have been distributed within targeted habitat areas during spring. The focus is baiting to protect Malleefowl, Bush-stone Curlew and Plains Wanderers. Landholders within habitat areas of the listed birds are encouraged to bait to protect birds leading up to and during nesting and chicks hatching. Fox control has productive benefits by reducing fox predation on lambs. Contact your local NRM Officer to be involved in the Spring Fox Baiting for Ground Dwelling Birds Program.

Rivals Americain, Dunaden hot favourites for Melbourne Cup While the final Melbourne Cup field will not be announced until Sunday, BRAD PERRY, has a look at the horses with all the hype leading into Australian racing’s biggest day. Mount Athos’ trainer is claiming the horse will be fresh despite not racing for 80 days before this year’s cup. The last time Mount Athos raced was on August 18 when it won the Group Three Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2600m) at Newbury for a third straight win.

Americain THERE is much hype surrounding the eight-year-old brown stallion Americain, who is likely to go into the Melbourne Cup as one of the main favourites. Americain will be looking to create history by being only the second horse to win the Melbourne Cup twice in nonconsecutive years. It has been a busy year for the international horse, finishing fourth behind rivals Dunaden, Alcopop and Lights of Heaven in the Caulfield Cup. Also, Americain placed sixth at the Prix Kergorlay 3000 metre event in France and finished a respectable third in the Australian Cup held in March. A solid run in the 2400 metre BMW Stakes at Rosehill in April saw Americain finish second, while the same horse recorded a sixth place at the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Since it was announced that Damien Oliver will ride Americain, Sportingbet Australia reports that it has accepted a $25,000 each way bet on the horse, which if it wins, will net the punter $400,000. Americain’s preparation has been good but has it been good enough to win Australia’s biggest race?

Dunaden DUNADEN will go into this year’s Melbourne Cup looking for back-to-back wins and a place in history. The international horse is in stellar form coming off its most recent win in the 2400 metre Caulfield Cup from barrier 19. With odds stacked against it, Dunaden came home with the goods, edging out Alcopop to claim the $2.5 million prize money. The 2012 year began with a Group Two Grand Prix de Chantially 2400 metre race, where Dunaden placed third.

Dunaden also competed in the Hardwicke Stakes, again impressing to finish two lengths behind favourite Sea Moon. The horse was disappointed with a sixth place finish in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at the Ascot race course in England. Overall, Dunaden appears to have ticked all the boxes to make it two Melbourne Cups on the trot.

OUTSIDE CHANCES: Maluckyday DESPITE a lack of form, Maluckyday is still rated a chance to potentially cause an upset at this year’s Melbourne Cup.

THERE is plenty to like about Red Cadeuax, who narrowly missed out on winning last year’s Melbourne Cup. The English horse has placed in all of its starts this year and shown strength over long distances. Red Cadeuax could be a real stayer.

AFTER running third in the Geelong Cup, Bringatin is well placed as an outside chance to feature in the top three placings at the Melbourne Cup.

for us. Our first dance was to What A Wonderful World, sang by family friends Kate and Antonio. Unique aspect: Lachlan had secretly organised for my Nana to provide photos of her wedding ring set, which I had always admired, to have replicated. It meant a lot to me as I am very close with my grandparents. Honeymoon: Port Douglas. Tips for brides: Try and enjoy the lead up as well as the wedding day. It is an exciting time. Big name skiers in town for Berri’s classic race HUNDREDS of people will line the waterfront at Martin’s Bend in Berri this weekend to watch some of the world’s best skiers in action. The drawcard will be two time world champions Peter Proctor and Wayne Mawer along with several other big names in the fast paced sport to compete in the local event. The action kicks off on Saturday morning at 10am with a ‘social’ ski before the ‘Dash for Cash’ begins at 1pm. “The reason they call it social class is just because of the skis, you are running on small skis and a small rope,” Ski racing South Australia committee member Damien Philp said. Boasting a prize of $1000, the Dash for Cash is expected to be hotly contested. “They’ll start the dash at Lock 4 and it will go to the Lyrup Ferry, a 20 kilometre sprint race,” Philp said. The finishing order of one fast lap of the Riverland course in Saturday afternoon’s dash will determine the starting positions for Sunday’s main race, the Kingston Estate Wines Berri 90 Ski Race Classic. More than 120 skiers will take part on 58 boats amongst almost 40 classes at the Berri Water Ski Club at Martin’s Bend. Philp said the high number of entries and the sport’s big names expected to race over the two day

event should see a large crowd in attendance. “It will be good at the ski club for spectators to witness it because the skiers and boats will be flat out down under the Berri bridge and through the town,” he said. The expert races begin on Sunday morning at 10am with two different sessions, the first finishing at 11am and the next one at 1.30pm. “It’s basically bringing in spectators and competitors from all over Australia,” Philp said. “Competitors coming from Queensland, New South Wales and Perth. “It fills up the accommodation pretty well in the area.” The 90 kilometre main race is part of the River Classic Series, attracting top skiers from across the country. “Australia does very well on the worldwide scale for ski racing because several Australians are currently the world champions and a number of them will be here,” Philp said. “We’ve got the best in the world here.” Attendance for the event is free and the event is fully catered, although bringing your own food and drinks is also a welcome option. The start and finish lines are at the Berri Water Ski Club where most of the best viewing for the racing will take place. Local hopes fall on the shoul-

Loxton bowler wins zone four state singles championship ■ LAST week we reflected upon the impact Loxton RSL’s Craig Inglis is having on the men’s lawn bowling scene after only a relatively short time in the sport. Well, last Sunday at Barmera he further enhanced that growing reputation by taking out the Zone Four finals of the State Open Singles Championship. He will now be amongst the last 16 bowlers from metropolitan and country South Australia to contest the state finals at the Salisbury Bowling Club on Sunday and Monday, November 11 and 12. At Barmera, Craig defeated former state men’s singles champion, Berri’s Craig Treloar, 25-16, in the final. Earlier in the day he won a quar-

ter final against another Berri player Graeme King, 25-19, and then just edged past Barmera’s Alan Ness in a semi-final cliffhanger, 25-24. In other quarter finals, Ness defeated R Ratish (Freeling) 25-10, Dennis Treloar (Berri) won 25-14 against Lyndoch’s Chris Rule and Craig Treloar won 25-13 over Dennis Wutke (Barmera). Craig Treloar then progressed to the final against Inglis by eliminating his father Dennis in a semi final, 25-20. Berri had a four rinks to nil, 137 to 45 shots, victory over Barmera last Saturday, while Loxton looked in good touch with a 98-77 win against Loxton RSL. At the same time the other five teams look set for a titanic struggle to reach the remaining two finals’ spots even in these early days of the season.

Renmark RSL, Barmera, Loxton RSL and last year’s grand finalist Waikerie all have one victory for 19, 18, 17, 16 points and Renmark, with, on paper, at least a seemingly quality squad, are without a win and at the foot of the table on 10 points. Last Saturday the Renmark neighbours engaged in a nailbiter of a contest with the RSL team just getting over the line by one shot, 81-80. A 28-13 win by Renmark RSL’s Mal Inglis over Steve Ivanovic proved crucial in the end result. This week Renmark travels to play Loxton RSL, Waikerie hosts Barmera and Renmark RSL is at home to Loxton, while a bye to Berri surely gives their bowls the chance to cool off.

■ MATT Thur and his swinger Reece Glazbrook took out the Paul Hutchins Loan Centre Riverland Dinghy Championship after a dramaric final round, the Hunchee Run, last Saturday. Defending title holder Jason Gordon was full of praise for the new champions saying “Matt`s win was well deserved, full credit to him, he has worked hard to get his first win and really gave it a go on Saturday”. “The competition in the Open Sports class has really evened out now,” Gordon added. Gordon managed to hang on in difficult circumstances to finish runner-up coming in some 40 seconds behind Thur in the Hunchee Run. Ironically, Gordon went into the deciding race with concern over a back injury and while that did not cause him any concern

Jaensch claims cycling title ■ A WIN in the time trial and second place in the criteriums clinched the 2012 Riverland Cycling Championship for Steve Jaensch when the final two rounds were conducted last Sunday. Jaensch had won round one, a 50 kilometre road race, a week earlier. In Sunday’s 10km Individual time trial he finished with an average speed of 38.5 kilometres per hour followed by Peter Schammer 36.8, Peter Burr 35.3, Lee Rasheed 34.8 and Shane Pitman 33.5. In the criterium, Shane Pitman used his power to outsprint other members of a breakaway bunch who finished behind him in the order of Jaensch, Schammer, Rasheed and Burr. Shane Pitman was runner-up in the championship with Peter Schammer third. In recent Tuesday night criterium racing, Pitman won in A grade, Rasheed in B grade, Dennis Robinson in C grade , Gordon Pipe in D grade and Julius Otto in E grade.

Exceptional young tennis player aims high

Talented Blake ■ EYES ON THE PRIZE: These 2010 photos show the determination in the eyes of Barmera junior Blake Koskinas, who has since continued to pursue tennis at a higher level.

■ DURING one of my regular chats with local tennis coach Mike Horsman last weekend our discussion got around to promising 10-year-old Barmera junior Blake Koskinas. “Blake is an exceptional young player and also has a determination and commitment to the sport that you do not often find in one so young,” Mike said. While conscious of not putting too much pressure on our young sports people in situations like this, Mike and I agreed that it was also prudent to acknowledge any of their outstanding performances. “Blake gets amazing support from his family,” Mike added, “and, in fact, I have recommended to his parents that he would benefit from as much exposure as possible to the junior scene in Adelaide. “As a result, arrangements have already been put in place for him to be taken to the city on Wednesday afternoons to attend 10 years and under sessions conducted by leading coach Graham Neville. “I will also be suggesting that his time in Adelaide be increased as much possible next season. “Frankly, I have told Blake’s parents that I do not believe there is much more that can be put in place locally towards him fullfilling his tennis aims and needs.”

Mike added that he did not normally consider directing any of his students in this way in their early years but in Blake’s case he thought it necessary for the lad’s tennis future. “The only occasions I have involved myself previously in this way with any families was in the case of Luke Saville and Brooke Rischbieth,” Mike said. “Anyhow, Blake has really forced the issue himself with his performances so far.” Mike explained that the right handed youngster had won every Riverland tournament he had entered, even in competitions well above his age division, and had also excelled in others in Adelaide and beyond. “Blake has played two 10 year age group tournaments in Adelaide and won them both,” Mike said. “So that is why he is being put up against lads in older age competitions.” Blake is the number two seed in the top local junior grade and is defeating opponents much older than himself, while he has also been given a taste of our senior competition to a limited degree. “If attitude and determination to go with a lot of ability mean anything I believe we will hear a lot more about young Blake Koskinas as his tennis career unfolds,” Mike concluded.

Large field for sportsperson of the year ■ JUDGES have announced 26 nominees for the 2011-12 5RM-SGIC-Berri Resort Hotel Riverland Sportsperson of the Year award. The winner will be announced at the annual presentation dinner at the Berri Hotel on Friday, November 23. The long standing individual award was first made in 1961 but this will only be the 48th presentation function as there was a break in the years 1971 to 1975/76. Which raises a question. I wonder who may have won such awards for the years 1972 to 1974? Indeed it would be interesting to look back at records from that era for an indication. Allowing for those missing links and for a few ties in the award along the way it seems that in 2010/11, the 50th Sportsperson of the Year was named. Notable in this year’s nominees is the rare inclusion of a windsurfer, Anthony Hamood, while two tennis players, Cobdogla brother and sister Troy and Katie Saville, are the sport’s first nominees for several years following their exceptional performances in the local competition in recent seasons. The 2011-12 award will be decided from the following list: ■ Jake Albrecht (Cricket) Riverland Cricketer of the Year, continued to represent Murray Districts at the annual Country Carnival in Adelaide.

■ Cara Venning (Softball) - A grade Best and Fairest player, a member of the Loxton A grade premiership team. ■ Andrew Hill (Lawn Bowls) Retained his place in the State men’s squad. A skipper in the Berri premiership team. ■ Kerry Treloar (Lawn Bowls) Continued to represent the SA Women’s team until retirement during the year after 100 appearances. A skipper in the Berri premiership win. ■ Jason Gordon (Dinghy racing) - Won the Riverland championship.

Renmark’s 14-0 Loxton drubbing FIVE strike outs by Renmark A grade lone pitcher Dave Grenfell was the highlight of his side’s 14-0 victory over Loxton in last Friday night’s baseball. Despite the heavy defeat, a brilliant double play by Loxton’s junior pitcher Jeremy Musolino was also a feature of the game. Winds challenge sailors ■ VARIABLE winds from the south resulted in sailors experiencing conditions as unpredictable as the Melbourne weather when the Lake Bonney Yacht Club conducted Heat 2 sailing of its Club Championships last Saturday. Close racing and costly mistakes, including Mark Pfennig with ‘Matrix’ capsizing and testing the waters in the gusty conditions, were therefore the order of the day. It was good to see John Eshman with ‘Talisman’ head division one, Miscellaneous Cats, with Steve Thomas, ‘Just Do It’ second and Robin Bawden, ‘Carbon Copy’ third. ‘N514’ sailed by Kim Tonkin took the honours in division two Miscellaneous Monos. Sailing will return with a Handicap A Series race on November 10 after this week’s break for the ‘Murray Man’ triathlon.

Bee wins stableford ■ AT Waikerie Golf Club last Saturday Chris Bee took out a division one Stableford event with 39 points and Julie Steinert won division two with 37 points. Voucher winners were Marty ‘Magic’ Burnell 38 points, Craig David, Sandy Schultz and Peter Richardson all on 37 points. The previous Wednesday, Vince King, 44, Geoff Bald, 41, and John Schumann, 39 led the points in a similar event. At Barmera, Neville McPherson won the Saturday stableford with 43 points, while Les Campbell came out on top in the Sunday par competition with a score of plus four.

By GRAHAM CHARLTON SKI Racing Australia, South Australian division, will bring the Kingston Estate Wines Berri 90 Ski Race Classic to the Riverland this weekend. There will be 58 boats, including many of the best in Australia, pulling a total of 120 skiers over a 39 event,

two day program hosted by the Berri Water Ski Club at its Martin’s Bend site. Local hopes rest with Berri team ‘Hit It’ in the eight litre class of the ski classic with Damien Philp doing the driving, his father Chris being the observer and Saxton Brown and Lance Muus on the skis.

With excellent viewing and catering on hand a large number of spectators are expected to attend. The racing commences with social events from 10am on Saturday to be followed at 1pm by the Baldwins Boats ‘Mayhem Dash For Cash’. ■ Continued Page 30
