Renmark venue posts record profit By BRAD PERRY THE Renmark Club has announced a record profit of $413,000 for the 2011/12 financial year. With a turnover of more than $5 million in 2011/12, the Renmark Club has attracted thousands of people to the Riverland for
destination weddings and functions. Renmark Club president Sam Albanese said bringing more and more patrons to the popular riverfront venue has a domino effect for local tourism. “It flows on to everybody in the area,� he said. “People might come up
for a destination wedding and make a whole day of it.� The latest figures eclipse the club’s $365,000 net profit in the previous financial year and Mr Albanese said the five year forecast is looking very positive. ■Continued Page 4
Unemployed to benefit from Foodbank proposal FOODBANK SA has put forward a proposal to establish an accredited training facility in an unused citrus packing shed near Waikerie. The move is expected to not only provide fruit for individuals and families in need but also provide training for unemployed people from the region.

Park proposal SAVE Lake Bonney Group chair John Beech and Berri Barmera Council chief executive officer David Beaton have been invited to meet with the River Murray and Mallee Aboriginal Corporation to discuss the proposal to convert Lake Bonney to a conservation park. DESPITE many missteps by the Labor Government progress is being made towards a satisfactory Murray Darling Basin Agreement, according to Senator for South Australia Anne Ruston. “The passing of the Water Amendment (Long-Term Average Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment) Bill 2012 in the Senate today (Wednesday) is a positive step towards ensuring the long term health of the river,” Senator Ruston said “My hope is now we will be looking at a satisfactory whole of basin plan to complement this bill by the end of this year.”

AFTER extensive interest in the sale of Renmark’s Tower Tavern, the restaurant and two acres of riverfront land are likely to go to auction in the new year. Renmark Hotel Board chairman Randell McClure said most of the interest in the property, which is zoned light commercial, has come from within the region, with the odd inquiry from interstate. “There is a lot of interest but it will almost certainly go to auction to make use of that interest,” he said. Proceeds from the sale of the Tower Tavern will go towards debt reduction and the upgrading of facilities at the Renmark Hotel.
A LOXTON man was taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries after he was the sole occupant in a crash yesterday morning. Riverland police attended the scene of a single vehicle roll over believed to have taken place between 3am and 6am in Loxton. Police said it appears the driver veered onto the left hand side of the road, collided with a post, overcorrected and veered onto the wrong side of the road before rolling the vehicle on its roof.

■ OPEN: New Berri Bowland owner Ken White is hoping locals support the venue when it reopens tomorrow. OPERATING under the new name Berri Bowland, the Riverland’s only ten pin bowling facility will open its doors tomorrow for the first time since going into receivership earlier this year. While new owners Ken White and John Farrington had hoped to have the tourist attraction reopened last month, there has been more work required than initially anticipated. “We’re making sure everything is perfect cleanliness wise, in our other centres we are fanatical about that and people always comment about how clean we are,” he said.

Mr White, who also owns Barossa Bowland, said there have been a number of hurdles to overcome including extensive repairs to electronics. “I was hoping to be open a month ago but things just took a lot longer to get organised,” he said. “Our first priority is getting the place clean, having good quality food, better quality coffee and a better experience overall.” With plenty of feedback and anticipation from the local community, Mr White is hoping residents will support the bowling facility so it remains viable into
the future. “I made a few phone calls to schools to let them know we are open in case of end of year functions and a lot of them already had stuffed booked but the next day I had 130 people book in from different schools,” he said. “Local tourism would be 50/50 trade for us in the Barossa, whereas up here I think it would be 80 per cent local, 20 per cent tourism. “Relying on local trade here is a lot more important than in the Barossa.” Mr White hopes to have the venue’s liquor license by February
next year and plans to start league bowling again in early 2013. “Once it’s licensed that should help the venue as a whole experience,” he said. As a former local, Mr White said he was initially devastated when he heard Bowland had closed and decided to pursue purchasing the property. “I wasn’t even living here and I was devastated that it closed because when I was living here my son and I used to bowl here socially and it was a great thing to have in the area,” he said. Berri Bowland will open from 10.30am tomorrow until late.

THE Governor of South Australia has described the Riverland as “buoyant” while on a tour of the region on Tuesday. During the tour, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce and his wife Elizabeth visited the aquaponics facility and Wild ‘n’ Fresh at Loxton North, a stormwater reuse project in Loxton, Plummers Nurseries in Renmark, Foodbank, JMA Engineering and the Riverland Regional Hospital in Berri. Governor Scarce said the feedback from businesses and residents in the region
was very positive. “I’d say that people are buoyant, not cocky and realise that it’s a challenge but are using new thoughts and new technologies to grow businesses,” he said. “I think the people are just as resilient as my first visit in 2007 in the middle of a drought. “I’m going to take back a positive message but people are concerned, the future is a bit uncertain that’s for sure.” When asked about the $20 million Sustainable Futures Fund, Governor Scarce said he did not want to get into the “poli-
tics” but stated he thought it had been “practically applied”. “It gives an opportunity to employ more local people, to me that’s a good use of funds and they are in areas that looks to be sustainable,” he said. “I think that’s a good program.”

Empty Berri shops occupied BERRI’S local economy appears to be on the rise with an injection of new shops filling what were once vacant frontage along several streets. Business Riverland Inc president Barry Phillips said new and existing businesses filling empty shop fronts is having a positive impact on the town. “Undoubtedly empty shops is not what any town wants to have,” he said. “Berri and Barmera, anywhere in the Riverland, empty shops being occupied is positive. “The number of shops this time last year that were empty compared to this year, I would suggest it is a better outlook than what we had previously.” Mr Phillips is encourag-

CCTV to be installed in Loxton after vandalism CLOSED Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) will be installed in Loxton in a bid to deter vandalism following a number of incidents in recent months involving damage to community facilities. Loxton Waikerie Council is currently investigating suitable cameras to install at East Terrace and at the local skate park. The decision came last week after the South Australian Police recommended the installation of CCTV within the East Terrace shopping precinct and the Loxton Skate Park. Initial investigations suggested a suitable type would be a remote controlled, infra red, full HD resolution camera, with
council budgeting $10,000 for the purchase. Loxton Waikerie Council corporate and community services director Ruth Firstbrook told the Riverland Weekly that damage and graffiti to community facilities is costing thousands of dollars to repair.
“It was very obvious that we needed to monitor this because the toilets had been damaged three times and it cost significant amounts of money to repair them. “Common sense said that we have to move into the age of being able to monitor our public facilities.”
It’s a very small number of our community who are doing this. “We have had some problems with repeated vandalism of our toilets in East Terrace and there has been some incidents of graffiti around town, particularly at the skate park,” she said.
Mrs Firstbrook said council will work closely with police to help stop the vandalism. “We are certainly hoping it does act as a deterrent, where as well as having fixed cameras,

He said the demand from customers is there and decided to open a restaurant, utilising a previously empty shop front. “We’ve had a lot of messages from customers,” he said. “A lot of customers say they can’t wait.”

Foodbank’s packing shed proposal ■ From Page 1 “Our aim is to help build community capacity, not only by securing much needed produce for people in need but through value-added training for local people who, for one reason or the other, are not highly skilled or found themselves in an area of unemployment,” he said. “After they’ve done six months or so in this packing shed environment, they can go on to other for-profit businesses in the region with a certificate and will be in a better position to secure paid work than what they used to be.” The Caudo family, who have supplied excess citrus to Foodbank in the past, will be donating fruit and equipment support through their Hogwash Bend citrus farm and the Smith family’s unused packing shed has been offered for use in the project. Mr Royans said fruit packed in the Waikerie training facility will be available to over 30 welfare programs using the Riverland Foodbank service, as well as additional fruit being sent to Foodbank warehouses in Adelaide, Whyalla and Mount Gambier. Once the project is well established, Mr Royans said there are also plan to provide regular fruit deliveries to schools. The proposal is just a matter of months away from being put into action, according to Mr Royans.

Medicare Local Country South SA chief executive officer Lincoln Size visited the Riverland last week and met with a number of local health groups including the Renmark Paringa Health Advisory Council, the Flinders University Rural Clinical School and a Berri Barmera Health Advisory Council representative during the two day trip.

One of the biggest challenges in the region is transport and being able to get to and from visits and consultations with general practitioners, according to Mr Size. “One of our initiatives is also E-health and telehealth to try and provide an access point for people to see GPs and consultants without having to travel all over the place,� he said. “A lot of it is secondary prevention, so if someone is discharged from hospital with a cardiac condition, by having a telehealth presence you’ll be able to have a consultation via video link rather than someone traveling three and a half hours to Adelaide for a 30 minute appointment and then coming back again.�
More than 8000 for popular Christmas event in Loxton THOUSANDS of people are expected to attend Saturday’s Loxton Light Up Day for its 21st birthday and official kick off of the festive season in the area. More than 8000 people from across the region and outside will take part in the annual event, which attracts visitors from far and wide. Loxton Chamber of Commerce business and events manager Sonya Altschwager said feedback leading up to the event has been outstanding. “I think it is going to be fantastic weather, so that always confirms a big crowd,� she said. “It’s a tradition for everyone
to come back and each year lots of people look forward to it. “It’s a huge day for Loxton, it’s our major event for the year but it’s not just the day itself, it’s about having all those people attracted to our town and the Riverland to experience it and to come back again during the year for other holidays. “It’s amazing for one event to continue for 21 years, let alone in a small country town.� The main drawcard for the Light Up Day will be the return of Peter Combe (pictured) after he played at the event in 2010. The program kicks off at 9am but Santa does not arrive until
11am, where he will be in the traditional cave and also taking part in the new Reindeer Road. Described as a “huge success�, lanterns from last weekend’s workshop will be on display and the ever popular fireworks show will fill the sky from 9pm with “something special’ planned for the 21st birthday celebrations. Light Up Day kicks off the Loxton Lights Festival which includes a Christmas Tree Festival, Christmas Craft Fair, Community Carols, Christmas Picnic Dinner and of course, the ever popular Christmas Wonderland and Santa’s Walk.

River Run expected to raise over $200,0000 RIVERLANDERS have embraced the colour and spirit of the Mighty River Run this week as it passes through the region. About 35 boats and 135 crew members began the journey from Blanchetown on Sunday, heading through Waikerie and Cobdogla on Monday, Loxton and Berri the following day, Renmark yesterday and are scheduled to stop at Chowilla today before finishing in Renmark tomorrow. The charity flotilla is raising money for Novita Children’s Services in aid of children living with disability and other special needs. River Run coordinator Jason Clark said the towns have embraced the event. “We’ve had lots of people pull up on the side of the road and the riverbank and wave to us as we go past and get very excited to see the colour that is the River Run,� he said. “We rely on each of the towns to help us out with lunches and dinners and there have been service groups that do the catering that do a fantastic job and make it very easy for all of us as we come up here into the

East Murray Area School awarded $10,000 EAST Murray Area School Community Library has been awarded $10,000 to help its students better access technology. The funds were given to the school through Telstra’s Everyone Connected program and Telstra Area General Manager for South Australia Mark Bolton said the Telstra Foundation had been overwhelmed by the response from non-profit organisations across Australia.
“More than 1200 organisations applied for a $10,000 grant which was well above our expectations,” he said. “While all the applicants are making a significant contribution to their local community, the 100 successful recipients are delivering programs which focus on education, cyber safety, indigenous development through technology or connecting members of the community with a disability.”

Lameroo students put on a show LAMEROO Regional Community School students recently performed the production ‘Conundrum’ at the Lameroo Memorial Hall. Written by Timothy Tuck and produced with the permission of Maverick Musicals, ‘Conundrum’ received high praise from the audience. The play was based around the importance of seeing the funny side of life and the importance of having a sense of humour.
Under the guidance of performing arts teacher Cathy Miegel, ‘Conundrum’ showcased the artistic talents of primary students at the school. The script featured plenty of funny one-liners and catchy puns and there were some great individual performances by the students. Jo (Sarah Willcox) and Quip (Zac Mills) did well in their lead roles, while Orff (Henry Hancock) and Punella (Ellie Sracek) were great as villains.
The bad joke monster (Taylor Dabinett) was another crowd favourite. All the year 10 and 11 students who participated in the reception to year 7 production behind the scenes did a great job. Their roles included stage management, props, costumes, hair and make-up and front of house as part of their Stage 1 ‘Arts in the Community’ Studies.

MEMBERS of the Riverland Orchid Club recently exhibited displays at the annual Loxton Show. Orchid entries were well up on last year with 172 entries in total Keith Przibilla, of Renmark, was extremely successful. His dendrobium speciosum won Grand Champion of the show, Champion Australian Native Orchid and Champion Specimen - Any Other Genera and Champion Orchid Species. Members could not recall anybody ever winning so many champions with one orchid plant before. Keith also won Champion Seedling - Any Other Genera with a different plant. Reserve Champion and Champion Laeliinae went to an orchid grown by Stephen and Marianne Lynch, of Barmera. Don and Helen Cook, of Qualco, won Champion Cymbidium 90mm and over, Champion Cymbidium 60 to 90mm and Champion Cymbidium Seedling, as well as having the most points. Trevor and Shirley Mayfield, of Berri, won Champion Cymbidium 60mm and under and Champion Cymbidium Specimen, with one of their orchids.

Funds raised for lodge JUST over $2600 was raised at our recent Fete held in the grounds of Bonney Lodge, which would not have been possible without the help from our usual volunteer helpers and those who came along to support us on the day. We also thank residential care staff and their family members who helped and also set up tables and cooked the BBQ. Thank you also to the generous community members who donated food, drinks, goods and plants for sale. The money raised will help to pay part of the cost of recent renovations to Hawdon House kitchen, which have made the area more convenient for staff, residents and their family visitors.
With the kitchen project now complete, we are keen to make a start on the much needed bathroom upgrade at Hawdon House. All money raised by and for our auxiliary is to improve the lifestyle of the residents in care. Palms bingo has again donated approximately $1200 during this year which is greatly appreciated. Market turns seven THE Riverland Farmers’ Market will this Saturday celebrate seven years since it first began. In a timely launch, craft stalls will be also be available from Saturday onwards as the market takes a new approach. Market manager Rosalyn Kambouris said the market, held weekly at the Berri Senior Citizen’s Hall, continues to grow. “It has been seven years that we’ve had this Riverland Farmers’ Market for and I think it is really going strong and we have lots of good feedback from the locals and tourists,” she said. “We have a lot of visitors which helps us with breakfast and

Search for missing compressor RIVERLAND police are investigating the theft of a large refrigeration compressor that was allegedly stolen from the yard of a business on Gratwick Road, Loxton, between November 16 and 20. Install solar now to take advantage of $1000 rebate RIVERLANDERS are being encouraged to have their solar installed before January 1, 2013, to avoid missing out on around $1000 of the Federal Government’s solar rebate funding. Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Greg Combet last week announced that the government would phase out the Solar Credits multiplier mechanism six months ahead of schedule. Yates Electrical Services owner Mark Yates said locals installing solar panels next year would only be eligible to receive a single multiplier rebate from the govern-
ment, if their solar panels are installed after January 1, 2013. Mr Yates said, according to market prices, locals could miss out on around $1000 in government funding. “With a reduced government rebate we anticipate a price rise for solar installations in 2013,” he said. “The government was originally going to keep the the double rebate multiplier to June 2013 but they’ve brought the deadline closer, making it financially harder for people trying to offset the electricity consumption with solar panels.”

Club shines at awards night THE Renmark Club has been acknowledged for its continued push for success with three major honours from the Clubs SA Awards of Excellence in Adelaide on Saturday. The club received Best Club Operations in regional South Australia for the third consecutive year, functions manager Lyn Wilksch was named Clubs SA Employee of the Year and the venue also received the overall Best Dining title. Renmark Club manager Brenton Franks said a group of 14 people representing the venue attended the awards night. He said the dining award is a credit to the staff and the service offered to customers.
“We were all very excited about that one because it is an SA award not just a regional club award,� he said. Mrs Wilksch said she was “shocked’ but honoured to win the individual award. “It was really good to receive such an acknowledgement for all the hard work that we do here and everyone that works with me,� she said. Much of the success was a team effort with destination weddings in the Riverland becoming more popular, according to Mrs Wilksch. “When I first started here that weekend we had four weddings, this weekend’s my 79th wedding and I’ve been here five years com-
ing up this December,� she said. “It’s just grown and next year we are fully booked and I’ve got four weddings already booked for 2014.� At the awards night, Renmark Club president Sam Albanese was also recognised for his service of almost 19 years with a Presidents Citation. “To be acknowledged in that way was nice and from when we first started to where we are now, there is such a big extreme between both ends and we’ve got big plans for the future,� he said. Work is expected to get underway on $2 million worth of renovations in March next year with the first phase of the project expected to be completed by September.

■ Renmark wicketkeeper Morgan Smith. ■ LAST season’s Riverland Cricketer of the Year Jake Albrecht needed a six and a four from the final two balls of the local team’s innings to defeat the visiting Australian Cricketers Association Masters side in a Twenty20 game at Renmark Oval on Friday night. He was on target from former test player Matthew Elliott’s bowling with the penultimate ball being launched for a six but failed to reach the boundary from the last delivery, so he ended up 33 not out in a total of 4 for 142 in reply to the visitor’s 6 for 145. In the ACA Master’s innings, South Australian pair Ben Johnson and Tim Nielsen turned back the clock with classy totals of 59 not out and 43, including several massive sixes. For the Riverland, Renmark District medium pacer James Bentley (2 for 16) and young gun Zakk Gallo (1 for 17) were the best of the local bowlers. The Riverland’s opening pair, Waikerie-Ramco’s Kym Taylor (33) and Berri’s Danyal Reynolds (53) then blasted the highly credentialed ACA attack across the oval, setting the foundation for the home side having the chance of a last gasp victory needing 17 off the final over. One of Reynolds’ sixes off the bowling of former Australian leg spinner Peter Sleep was a huge hit from what Sleep described as a “really good ball”. Former leading women’s international Shelley Nitschke was the best of the Masters bowlers with 2 for 18. From the tour, Renmark wicketkeeper Morgan Smith was awarded a $1000 ACA Masters scholarship.
Swimming participation to rise ■ THE Riverland Swimming Association is expecting a surge in participant numbers as the season kicks off tomorrow with the first points meeting at Loxton. After the success of Berri’s Hayden Stoeckel at the Olympics, the association is expecting a rise in swimmer numbers this season as Olympic hopefuls take to the water in an attempt to achieve their dreams. The first pennants encouters will be Renmark against Loxton and Waikerie against Berri on November 30. Other dates to remember include the Waikerie Open on December 8, the Berri Open on January 5, Country Championships in Gawler on Jan 11 to 14, Loxton Open on February 2, Renmark Open on Febuary 16 and 17, the Riverland Distance Championships in Berri on February 24 and the Riverland Sprint Championships in Berri on March 3.

■ RYAN Goodes from the Riverland Boxing and Fitness Club at Loxton took out the 60 kilogram Youth Open title at the SA Boxing Championships at Morphettville on the weekend. Goodes began the state titles by defeating the unopposed Elite Open 60kg champion Pandeli Paterakis 12-5 in a matched bout. The talented boxer then won a hard fought final against another impressive junior Wayne Fraser, of the Renmark Boxing Club, 10-7. Women’s off-road racing ■ THIS year was the first that South Australia hosted a women’s class in the SA Off Road championships. Off Road Racing is a discipline of motorbike racing and involves two different formats. Sprint involves riders starting individually in number order at roughly 30 second intervals and completing the 5 to 10 minute course as fast as possible. It is great for spectators and favours riders with raw speed and power. Cross Country events are conducted on a 15 to 30 minute marked course where competitors race continuously for three hours. The format rewards riders with consistency and

Wilksch puts away the whistle to focus on coaching young football team
■NEIL Lemmey, a former member of the South Australian men’s bowling squad, has put himself up for selection for the Renmark Bowling Club for this Saturday’s round of pennant matches. Lemmey, who will turn 54 next month, first played the game with Renmark RSL at the age of 15 and during a career in which he was amongst the most successful players in the region, he also played locally at the former Renmark Club Bowling Club, Berri, Loxton, Moorook and Lyrup teams. Neil also spent a season playing for the Adelaide Club and was also an administrator and player at the Marylands Club in Sydney for a period until September 2009 when he returned to the Riverland. He has not bowled locally since then, in fact, having had his

Mark will be a huge loss to the local umpires panel as he stands aside while at the top of his form having added to his Golden Whistle collection in season 2012, as well as being named Umpire of the Carnival at the SA Country Championships and then officiating in the national country competition.

Also last Sunday, the State Men’s Pairs Sectional Play was conducted for Region Four at Tanunda. Loxton’s Graeme Huppatz and Trevor Schulz were the only three game winners for six points on the day and along with Berri’s Andrew Hill, who partnered Freeling’s Chris Kearns, are the only Riverland bowlers to advance to the knockout finals at Tanunda this Sunday. Hill and Cearns finished shots up on Waikerie pair Nathan Cronin and Brian Burnett after both teams won two games.
Nominations for local coach of the year â– SIX nominations are being considered for the 2011-12 5RM/ Berri Juices John Ormsby Coach of the Year award.
Peter Zadow â– PETER has been with the Blanchetown Swan Reach Football Club since the 1980s and has played over 300 games, many as team captain. He has also coached at junior and A grade levels and since the club joined the Independent section of the Riverland League in 2010, he has rebuilt the senior team. Over three seasons he has established new playing styles, working with many of a younger brigade he coached previously to premierships in the junior grades. This all culminated in the Redbacks taking out the 2011 grand final and remaining competitive since then.
Steve Atkinson â– STEVE took over as senior coach of the Berri River Rangers A grade soccer team in 2012, lifting them from third place on the premiership ladder in 2011 to undefeated premiers and Top Four Cup winners last season. That success involved a winning streak of 19 games and came from greater discipline and
commitment to both training and playing. Steve brought good coaching form to the senior position having coached the club’s juniors to premiership and Top Four doubles in each of the previous three seasons. Several of the juniors involved in that success had an impact at senior level in 2012.
Brett Stokes ■BRETT was appointed as senior coach of the Renmark Hockey Club last season and immediately had an effect by introducing a new professionalism at the organisation both off the field, in training and in game styles across the various grades. He was also involved in several official positions with Hockey SA and continued as coach of the SA men’s team at the Australian Country Championships building on the improvement at both team and individual level from the previous season. Brett was assistant coach of the senior Australian men’s country team that toured Thailand and Malaysia in April this year and
has been appointed head coach of the senior women’s Australian country team that will travel to Singapore and Hong Kong in April 2013.
Lyndon Burns ■THE former Barmera Monash premiership player returned to the club as senior coach and masterminded the end of a 23 year flag drought for the A grade team. He gained instant respect from players, officials and supporters, implementing a playing style that was a major factor in the premiership. An ability to have a number of former junior players return to the club meant an increase in the number of travelling players involved but that was matched by an ability to mould that group with the local contingent to win matches. His coaching also focused on the club’s future with attention to juniors being given opportunities at senior level. Employment will take him away from the position in 2013.

In extremely hot conditions, keeping the athletes cool was, of course, a major issue and apart from going through nearly a tonne of ice, 10 paramedic cases, 1000 Nippy’s drinks and soft drinks, 2000 litres of spring
water and 10,000 plastic cups were used. There are reports that a quick dash to Berri for additional cups was necessary after supplies in Barmera were exhausted. Following the event numerous messages of feedback were received by the host club, Adelaide Triathlon, and having read through a number of them, the only hint of criticism was a suggestion that there could have been more distance markers out
on the course. The rest were full of praise for the organisation and venue for the event, such as this comment: “I am the coach and owner of Fit2Tri and I would like to congratulate you on an excellent event. “I have raced around the world and this was one of the best organised and relaxing races I have ever been to. “Congratulations once again and I look forward to coming back next year.�

Jesse-Lee Jones â– IMPRESSIVE performances working on the Renmark High School Volleyball program and as coach of the open girls teams at the annual National Schools Cup in Melbourne, including a gold medal in under 17 girls division one in 2010, led to Jesse-Lee being appointed coach of the under 16 state girls team. This necessitated travelling to Adelaide every weekend for five months prior to taking the team to Bendigo for the national championships. The team won the final for more gold medals. Those close to Jesse-Lee remark on her enthusiasm, energy, vision and dedication mixed with a sense of fun as she constantly strives to improve her own coaching skills.
Sailing training returns to Lake Bonney ■SAIL training classes are now back and running at the Lake Bonney Yacht Club from 10am each Saturday morning, and are open to anyone interested in trying the sport. Take along life jackets if possible, although the club does have some available to go with the holdfast trainers and pacer yachts it has available for the sessions. Meanwhile, light to moderate ‘shifty’ winds were in supply when the club held the second handicap race of the season last Saturday and some 180 degree wind shifts presented sailors with a challenge. Concentration for the duration of the race was therefore necessary but probably went missing for two catamarans. Steve Thomas in ‘Just Do It’ and Peter Dunk and Kirsten Thomas aboard Splashes of Brilliance’ were seen with spinnakers up doing some sort of 360 degree dance before heading back to the correct course. However, Thomas recovered to win division one, Miscellaneous Catamarans, from John Eshman in ‘Talisman’ and Mark Pfennig in ‘Matrix’. In division two, pacers went to Tim and Josh Ridley with ‘Sea Chook’ ahead of Ellyn and Belinda Cale in ‘Pacer 6’.
Foursome Waikerie winners â– THE winners of foursomes competitions last week at the Waikerie Golf Club on Wednesday were James Thomas, 42 points, from Hans VanderMeyden and Derek Greenfield, 41 and on Thursday, Elaine Kratopoulos was the winner on 38 points. Then on Saturday, Phil Isaacson with 76/63 in a stroke event won division one with division two going to Alex Nicholson, 86/65. Voucher winners were Craig Robinson, 85/65, Malcolm Chidlow, 85/67, Paul Stringer 86/68 and Anne Greenfield 87/68.
Perponda on a roll ■THE new club into the Mid Murray Cricket competition, Perponda, inflicted the first defeat of the season on 2011/12 premier Waikerie Gold last Saturday, 5 for 158 to 7 for 152. A number of Gold players got off to solid starts including top scorer Marcus McGrath’s 29 but could not go on with the job against tight bowling led by Peter Leedham with figures of 3 for 23. Then in reply, Josh Rudiger hit 48 and Leedham with 41 set up the Perponda victory. In the other match, Morgan 9 for 186 (C Carlieg 86, Bryce Matthews 3 for 25) had a big win against Blanchetown Swan Reach 87 (Scott McKenzie 4 for 10). This Saturday a Twenty20 competition is being held at Waikerie from 10am.

Murray Man set to return

By GRAHAM CHARLTON FOLLOWING a successful event this year, the Murray Man Triathlon has been confirmed for a return to Barmera in 2013. With more than 500 competitors participating in this year’s Murray Man Triathlon at Lake Bonney, Barmera, the event will be held again at the same location on November 9 and 10, 2013. Adelaide Triathlon Club president Andrew Bartlett said that an application was submitted to the Berri Barmera Council and accepted for a 2013 Murray Man to be held in the Riverland. Registration for the race will open on Friday, February 1. Bartlett is also very optimistic that the main race for the triathlon will again be an official Australian Long Course Championship event. In the Australian triathlon body’s official technical director’s report and an informal ‘thank you’ to the Adelaide club, volunteers and the local community, it refers to the 2012 staging of the event as “world class” despite the hot challenging conditions.
