Loxton cricketers gain Outbacks’ selection Two Loxton cricketers have been selected to play for the Outbacks – the South Australian country cricket team early in the new year in Bundaberg, Queensland. It is the first time either Josh Deren, 29, or Shaun Reilly, 19, have made the team, and signals a giant step forward for the younger of the two who is aiming for a professional cricketing career. They will both be having a quiet New Year’s Eve this year with the team flying out of Adelaide on New Year’s Day in readiness for the first game against Western Australia on January 3. Reilly hopes the Outbacks’ selection will help him progress to a professional cricket career – with the Redbacks then hopefully playing for Australia.’ The leg spin bowler made the Outbacks’ squad last summer but “didn’t make it through”. To that end he is playing district cricket for Tea Tree Gully and spent four months playing in Darwin in the off season for South Australia to boost his experience and skills, and he believed that had helped him gain selection. "I was in the South Australian under 19 squad last year and I had a pretty good season playing down at Tea Tree Gully," Reilly said. "I had a couple of trial matches with the Outbacks and didn't do too badly. "I went up and played first grade in Darwin for Southern Districts." That was after he completed his Certificate 3 in Horticulture at Roseworthy Agricultural College mid this year - from June until the end of September. He is now back working with his parents David and Anita at Loxton on their date and grape farm but spends a lot of time travelling to Adelaide for cricket. "I have been back and forward since

early October, playing my first game for Tea Tree Gully seconds this season on October 5," Reilly said. "I would love to get a gig with the Redbacks in days to come. "I did a couple of days training with them in Darwin." Reilly said his ambition to play for Australia was "obviously a long way off" and getting a run in the first grade in Adelaide and taking wickets was his next aim. "Last year I was training four days a week with the under 19s at Tea Tree Gully." This summer he trains three nights a week in Adelaide for his district club and another night a week "by myself working with the old man in a skills session". Deren, a right-handed batsman, said it was “fantastic” to get the call saying he had been selected from coach Paul Pasculli. “It is a great opportunity.” He has played Riverland cricket for six years – initially at Monash and now for Loxton. However, he is experienced in playing at district level in Adelaide – playing for Northern Districts as a junior and then a year with Tea Tree Gully while living and working in Loxton at the ANZ Bank. “I had an offer from Tea Tree Gully to go there,” Deren said. However the rigors of travel and training for that level saw him give that away. “My wife had a child and the travel was just too much to play down there all the time,” he said.

Get home safely GETTING home safely is an important part of celebrating this Christmas. Riverland police said this week that it was fine to have a few drinks and have fun, but people needed to ensure they made it home safe after a night out. Sergeant Carol Bristow, of Berri police, said people needed to understand that getting home safe posed more difficulties when they had had too many drinks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When out and about remember the principles of personal safety - confidence, body language, awareness of your surroundings and trusting your instincts,â&#x20AC;? Sergeant Bristow said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is important to have a personal safety plan for a variety of situations such as using public transport or taxis or when you are out with friends.â&#x20AC;? She said there were strategies that party goers needed to consider in advance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you feel your safety is being threatened call triple zero,â&#x20AC;? she said. POLICE NEWS Arrested for theft at Ramco A 46-YEAR-OLD Sunlands man was arrested on Friday for theft, breaching a condition of his bail agreement, two warrants, possessing cannabis and equipment. Police allegedly located the man on Ramco Rd, Ramco, with a stolen bar fridge in his vehicle, which had been stolen after a break in at Cadell earlier in November. He appeared in the Berri Magistrates Court Monday morning and was bailed to re-appear at a later date.

Michelle follows in Mother’s career footsteps

Student working towards her dream job A $4000 SCHOLARSHIP made all the difference to Loxton university student Michelle Ahrens this year. Michelle, 20, said that even with the scholarship she had worked two part-time jobs throughout the university year and would now work throughout the summer break. Flinders University instigated the scholarship program to help country students who find themselves in the same situation as Michelle was at the start of 2012 – ineligible for a Centrelink payment because she had not been supporting herself independently for 18 months – but stymied by distance from living at home while doing tertiary study. “The financial assistance helped immensely with the cost of textbooks and living expenses and generally made the transition from home to Uni an easier process,” Michelle said. “Flinders University is a great place for rural students to study and that Flinders provided great support for the transition from the country to the city.” Michelle started doing an environmental degree this year, but will follow her mother Julie into the field of teaching in 2013. She attended Berri Primary School until moving to Loxton in year seven, where she undertook year seven at that town’s primary school, completing her schooling at Loxton High School. In the year between school and university Michelle worked

Although some of the units that she has done this year will be credited towards the Bachelor of Education, Michelle will now take another four years to finish

year double degree. “I don’t regret it because it was something that I really wanted to do and now I know it isn’t for me and it has confirmed that I really want to do education,” she said. Michelle plans to teach high school geography and German – continuing the language that she started in year seven, and which took her on a two-month

school exchange to Germany in year 10. In the future she plans to teach in rural and remote areas of the State and wants to work in an indigenous community at some stage. For now she will live at home in Loxton for the summer, saving the $273 per week cost of living on campus at Uni Hall. Michelle become eligible for Youth Allowance part way through the year which meant that she didn’t receive her full scholarship. “Even with Youth Allowance I worked two jobs all year – at a swimming centre as a swimming instructor and also with a Girls On Track program run by the Smith Family and Girl Guides for girls at risk in schools in Adelaide,” Michelle said. “I don’t think enough people know about it (the scholarship). “It is very important for uni students in affording to be able to go to university. “I will live here (during the holidays) because I get to save as much money as I can – then move back in February. “Summer is my main income for the year.” Michelle will be instructor in charge of VacSwim at Loxton Pool in January and run private lessons outside of those dates as well. She is the daughter of Wayne and Julie Ahrens, of Loxton, and has a sister Helen studying at Adelaide University, although Helen is currently in America on an exchange.

Small committee continues Rural students face greater costs to attend uni 34-year-old carol tradition FLINDERS UNIVERSITY is demonstrating its commitment to students from rural and regional Australia and those in financial need, by establishing Student Access Scholarships for students starting their studies in 2013. The establishment of the scholarships is recognition that students from rural and regional Australia often face significant financial difficulty when moving to a capital city to undertake university studies. Professor Andrew Par-

kin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor said it was very satisfying for Flinders University to be able to provide additional support for students from rural and regional Australia to relocate to Adelaide and begin their tertiary education. In 2013, 100 Flinders University Student Access Scholarships valued at $5000 each will be available. THE BARMERA Community Christmas Carols will again be held in the grounds of Bonney Lodge on Sunday, December 16 at 7pm. It continues a 34-year-old tradition that started when the Riverland Brass Band combined with the Riverland Choral Group to present the first carols evening on the original grounds of Bonney Lodge over looking Lake Bonney. The event then shifted around the town, to the trotting track, the main oval and then to the lake. Four years ago a decision was made to hold the carols at Bonney

Lodge to enable residents to also enjoy the musical program with the rest of the community. The small organising committee has put together an hour of carols, music, solo, men’s choir and readings. The carols will be led by the four Jericho brothers - Nathan, Chris, Stephen and Rohan on keyboard, trumpet, violin and flute. The community is encouraged to join the residents and staff to for a gold coin donation to aid the Riverland Christmas appeal. Access is via Hawdon Street please bring your own chair.

River Docs chief executive officer Eve Rogers hailed the initiative a success.

Waikerie bowlers put out challenge for next November WAIKERIE Bowling Club plans to build on the $750 raised for Movember this year. Brian Oliver received a close shave from Gary Pursche on Sunday at the club watched by a small gathering of supporters. A group of his bowling ‘buddies’ chipped in some extra bucks for the shave to go ‘all the way’ which boosted the tally. Rain waits for parade Large drops of rain splattered the tail end of the 2012 Waikerie Lions Christmas Pageant on Friday night. However, the 3000 people lining the streets and taking part would have considered themselves lucky - given a thunderstorm and rain pelted down minutes afterwards. While it put a dampener on the after pageant entertainment, late night shoppers were largely protected by business verandahs as they made their way along the streets and to visit the Christmas Wonderland at the Waikerie Institute. They were numerous musical acts playing along the street and many took the opportunity to soak up the Christmas atmosphere. The pageant had more than 30 colourful floats, led by town crier Murray Dalgleish and the SA Police Brass Band, under the control of drum major Adam Buckley. Dance schools were represented by large numbers of children, and Year of the Farmer floats were a popular theme with several outstanding efforts.

Worth the visit to Waikerie

IT IS easy to gret blase about things in your own backyard and I hope riverland residents haven’t. While in the area as relieving as editor at the Riverland Weekly I headed to Waikerie for the pageant on Friday afternoon. Despite the rain starting to bucket down I decided I really should make the effort to get a photograph of some children in Santa’s Cave. I dutifully headed to the Institute and have to admit was amazed by the

Christmas Wonderland. It truly is an amazing sight and testament to the efforts of those who go to such enormous efforts to create something to help others enjoy some Christmas spirit. I have never seen such a spectacular display in two decades and three states working as a journalist and editor in regional towns. Congratulations to all involved. On returning somewhat wet to Berri I had to tell every-

one I saw at the caravan park to make the effort to go for the drive and see it before they left the area. I hope locals from Waikerie and other Riverland towns alike don’t ignore what is on their doorstep. I urge you to make the effort to take a look. Getting in to the Christmas spirit this year will be easy for those who take the time to visit this, and the wonderful displays of lights in other Riverland towns.

A 50-year-old Remark man was reported on Saturday for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol, with an alleged breath analysis reading of 0.101. He was stopped by police on Gurra Rd, Berri, for a mobile driver screening test. He has been issued with a six month loss of licence and will appear in court at a later date. A 62-year-old Berri man was reported on Friday for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol, with an alleged breath analysis reading of 0.231. He was stopped at a breath testing station on Fielder St, Berri and has been issued an immediate loss of licence for 12 months and will appear in court at a later date.

Reported for burnout A 21-year-old Waikerie man who allegedly executed a ‘burnout’ at 10.45am on Tuesday has had his vehicle impounded. The alleged offence took place on Leonard Norman Drive, Waikerie. His vehicle was impounded for 28 days and he was reported for misuse of a motor vehicle. He will appear in a court at a later date.

Tools stolen from business Between 4.30pm on 29 November and 9.20am on 30 November a business on Kay Ave, Berri was broken into, with a lap-top computer, Bosch drill, Stanley socket set and screwdriver stolen.

Consider growing native Hibiscus

LYOGYNE or native Hibiscus is well worth looking at for free flowering plants to suit most gardens in the Riverland and Mallee. Most gardeners would be familiar with tropical Hibiscus and many are quite successful locally until the frost hits. The native Hibiscus is pretty much the same except that they are tolerant of poor soils and very dry conditions once established. The original species A. huegelii and A. hakeifolia are widespread across southern Australia and one glorious sight would have to be native hibiscus generously dotted over rocky hillsides in full bloom. Many new hybrids have a wide colour range from the pale yellow, pink and purple tones. They also have a long flowering period for most of the year, although individual flowers only last a day. The new hybrids tend to be denser than the original species

they have been derived from and the occasional light prune will keep them even denser. They grow quickly, so for new gardens they can be used as quick screen and fillers. I like to use some of the darker purple forms with smaller Acacia or wattles for a really strong colour contrast of purple and bright yellow. Most forms grow to 2m to 3m and some claim to stay smaller â&#x20AC;&#x201C; around 1.5m to 2m. While native hibiscus tolerates dry conditions it would be a mistake to leave them to their own devises in a garden. Regular watering (say fortnightly) and feeding (spring and autumn) will mean that one will get the most out of these tough shrubs. The best way to buy Alyogyne is in bloom in order to know what colour they will be as the picture labels donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always give an accurate idea of the flower colour. So for quick growing colourful shrubs, consider native Hibiscus.

For the second consecutive year Morgan Community Development and Tourist Association has organised a spectacular fireworks display on the water as a finale, association chairperson Rod James said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The fireworks display will be set on the river, on a pontoon, allowing the colours of the spectacle to light up the night sky and reflect in the water,â&#x20AC;? he said. Entertainment will feature the SA detachment of the Royal Australian Navy Band, rock band My Volition, and many creative floats, decorated bikes, prams, and novelty costumes such as Smokey the CFS Koala. The afternoon will get underway at 2.30pm with the Riverfront Fair. It will have food and drinks stalls, variety stalls, games, rides for children and lots more. There will be live music from 3pm, followed by the award winning Morgan Christmas Pageant starting at 6pm, from the marshalling point at the Lookout on Railway Terrace. It will follow the same route as in 2011 - down between the hotels twice before making their way down to the riverfront. More than 50 colourful maginative floats took part in 2011, making the event a huge success and organisers are hoping to see as many businesses, community groups and individuals join together in the spirit of the season again for 2012. Float entries, decorated prams and bikes and fancy dress costumes are encouraged so put on your creative hats, as there are many prizes to be won. Float entry applications are available from Morgan Internet and Resource Centre or Morgan Riverview CafĂŠ. Last year Morganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s riverfront fair and evening fireworks were enjoyed by 3000 spectators. Thousands expected at pageant

BETWEEN 3000 and 5000 people are expected to watch this Friday’s 2012 Renmark Club Christmas Pageant. The pageant will kick off at the Renmark Hotel end of town at 6.30pm and make its way from Murray Avenue to finish up at Ral Ral Avenue, near the Renmark Paringa Public Library. Renmark Christmas Pageant Committee publicity officer Darren Letton said that 24 floats were confirmed as entries on Tuesday, which would mean at least 30 floats by the time emergency service personnel such as the Country Fire Service and police got involved. “We might get a few more at the last minute and that is what we are expecting,” Mr Letton said. He said some of the most spectacular floats in recent years had been those from Deville’s Refrigeration and

Renmark Hospital. His own business Glen View Poultry has made a concerted effort with its pageant float for three years but is yet to take the top prize. However, he said community groups and businesses, while keen to win the perpetual trophy, tended to prepare a float to raise awareness of themselves and as a way of thanking the community for its support over the past year. “I have got a bit of a surprise for everybody,” he promised of the Glen View Poultry float. Commentary on the Christmas pageant will be given by Riverland ABC Saturday morning presenters Glen O’Brien and Tim Jackson, who are also among the event’s judges. Prizes are awarded for best overall float, best not for profit or community group and best decorated bike.

Plenty of entertainment for all the family TINSEL the Reindeer will be among the special guests at this year’s Renmark Club Christmas Pageant. The evening’s entertainment will get underway at 5.30pm - giving people plenty to watch both before and after the pageant near the lion statue and Westpac building. Pageant committee publicity officer Darren Letton said Tinsel the Reindeer was a half hour interactive show which would go on stage after the pageant. Of course the biggest attraction of all will be Father Christmas - who will be in his cave near the Renmark Fountain - both before and after the pageant. Parents will need to take their own camera if they wish to take photos of their children with the man in red. The event offers plenty to do for the whole family - with many Renmark businesses open late to cater for Christmas shoppers. Then there is a plethora of stalls offering a vast choice of food. “There is heaps and heaps of food stalls,: Mr Letton said. There will also be face painting, games, jumping castle and fireworks to finish off the night from 9.15pm.

Riverlandersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; generosity shines through appeal THE GENEROSITY of Riverlanders is evident in the fantastic response to this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christmas Appeal. That is according to appeal coordinator Mrs Cheryle Taylor who said the number of toys received had been fantastic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are a bit slow on food,â&#x20AC;? Mrs Taylor said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will probably end up with just over 400 applications. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I reckon it will be a little less than last year.â&#x20AC;? She said the Riverland Christmas Appeal helped people from Paringa to Loxton, Morgan, Blanchetown, Berri, Renmark and Bamera and surrounding areas. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is the whole of the Riverland,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have an organisation in each town collecting.â&#x20AC;? Mrs Taylor believed people had been so generous in part because they never knew if it might be them needing help in the future. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I suppose they could be in that situation themselves.â&#x20AC;? On Sunday the Ulysses Club Toy and Tucker Run had 176 motorbikes take part and collected almost half of the total toys collected to date. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That was really great,â&#x20AC;? she said. She also expected a lot of donations to be made this Friday night at the Renmark Christmas Pageant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Instead of people paying an entry fee they are just donating toys and food of the value of their entry,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Christmas Appeal has been

Gaining a sense of achievement

A SENSE of achievement and increased self esteem has been the outcome of a sixweek course for a group of unemployed Riverlanders. Regional Development Australia indigenous economic development manager Julie Robertson said the culmination of the Passion for Fashion course would be a fashion parade at Renmark Club on Thursday, December 13 from 6.30pm. She said the aim of the course had been twofold - to get indigenous and non-indigenous young people working together and to increase the self esteem of those taking part. This week is the fifth of the course which has seen participants learn about many aspects of fashion - from hairdressing, to make-up and nail techiniques to, photo shoots, deportment, design, event planning and modelling. “A lot of these young people are disengaged from any type of learning or work

so it is to try and encourage them to gain a pathway back in to something,” Ms Robertson said. “It is just the first step in getting them to re-engage in some thing. “The fashion is a career path they might not have thought of. “It is about teaching them to stand up and be proud - think ‘I am nervous but I am going to make it’. “The confidence they have developed in the six weeks so far has been amazing.” Among those to offer advice to course participants were a professional hat maker, who taught the girls how to design and make a hat of their own - suitable for wearing to the races. They have also benefitted from sessions with a life coach and at the end of the course they will each have a consultation with a professional at the Career Development Centre, who will work with them to set out a pathway

to achieve their desired career. “The person will talk to them about what components of the course they enjoyed.” Ms Robertson said participants came from Loxton, Bamera, Waikerie, Berri and Renmark. She encouraged anyone in the community to attend the grand finale fashion parade to enjoy seeing the fashions and to support those who had undertaken the course.
