Ready for festive rush LOCAL traders are remaining upbeat coming into the final days before Christmas with last minute shoppers expected to flock to the stores across the region. Renmark Paringa Traders president Dave Patty said business has been steady so far but he is hopeful the situation will improve leading into Christmas. “There has been no real big burst or anything happening, although I guess things will increase with school holidays starting,” he said. Mr Patty said he was expecting plenty of last minute shoppers. “As usual, some people are organised very early and then there is a lot of last minute stuff,” he said.

Business Riverland president Barry Phillips said traders are preparing for a rush in the lead up to Christmas. “We would like to think that the Riverland is progressing through the Christmas period here in a very positive manner, certainly with the christmas activities and the parades in each town,” Mr Phillips said. Encouraging residents to buy at least one gift from the Riverland this Christmas, Mr Phillips said the festive trade is important for many businesses. The region is also set to benefit from the holiday season with caravan parks, hotels and motels taking many bookings. Loxton Chamber of Commerce business and events manager Sonya Altschwager said

traders in the area were already feeling a boost as Christmas approaches. “We have reached over $20,000 in sales for our gift voucher and that can only be spent back in our local member stores, so that is something that is really focused on shopping local,” Ms Altschwager said. The Loxton area will extend shopping hours in a bid to give the local economy a further cash injection. “We have extended our shopping hours each Saturday until Christmas until 3pm and we are also having a twilight trade until 7pm on Friday, December 21.” Businesses in the Riverland West area are also preparing for a last minute shopping rush.

Reminder to stay safe on the roads during holidays THE State Government is reminding motorists to be cautious on the roads over Christmas. Following the launch of Operation Safe Holdays - No Excuses, Road Safety Minister Jennifer Rankine said the Christmas-New Year period is a time of celebration and relaxation but all too often it is marred by death or serious injury on the road. “At this time of year there is increased road traffic, there are loaded vehicles, caravans, trailers, tourists on unfamiliar roads and drivers can be drowsy,” Ms Rankine said.

“Drivers can also be distracted by mobile phones, sound systems, on-board DVD players andsatellite navigation.

“It can be a deadly cocktail and we need to work together to ensure we all use and share

were seriously injured. In the past five years, 63 people have been killed during this time and there have been 641 serious injuries sustained. “It is not just family and friends that are forever affected by road trauma,” Ms Rankine said. “MFS fire fighters across the state responded to 345 road traffic crashes last Christmas school holidays. “Over the same period, CFS volunteers responded to 182 crashes and the SES attended 67 crash scenes.”

International DJ set to show his love for the Riverland THE Riverland is set to host one of the world’s most popular DJs this Saturday as a local night club promises to continue bringing top name acts to the region. Well known for international hit dance song ‘Show Me Love’, Mobin Master will play at the Rivaz Nightclub in Renmark on Saturday, supported by a host of local mix masters. Eleanor’s top marks LOXTON High School’s Eleanor Garrard topped the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) across the Riverland after results were released to students yesterday. With an ATAR of 98.75, the 18-year-old produced the highest mark across the region with Glossop High School’s Edmond Grosser (97), Waikerie’s Rachel Perry (96.03) and Renmark’s Shaun Crouch (93.6) topping their respective schools. Upon receiving a phone call from Loxton High School principal Steven Marshall, Miss Garrard said she was “kind of dazed and shocked” to receive the good news. “When I realised what I had achieved it was just overwhelming joy because I was not expecting to achieve that highly,” she said. “What this has done for me

is it has really secured my future and it’s allowed me to relax over the holidays because I’m confident going into next year. “To be one of those people and to join, I guess you could call it an honour roll of the people who have topped the Riverland, it is just a huge honour and I am so excited to be a part of that.” Miss Garrard’s high ATAR rank will now enable her to study her dream degree. “I was aiming for an honours psychology course at the University of Adelaide which has an ATAR of 99.95 in order to get in and that’s obviously very tough because it’s the top score,” she said. “I was thinking that even with bonus points from the country I might not be able to get that. “I went to check the results on the computer and found out it was 98.75 and that was

just huge.” The talented triathlete and volleyballer, who competed at the Australian Schools Volleyball Cup last week, thanked all of the teachers who helped her achieve her ATAR. Overall Loxton High School had 29 students receive an ATAR of above 80 and 14 of those had a score over 90. Waikerie High School’s Rachel Perry was surprised to find out she had received a score of 96.03. “I didn’t expect something quite that high,” she said. “It just felt really good that my hard work paid off.” She has applied to study nursing at the Flinders University Rural Clinical School in Renmark. While currently on holiday in Bali, Glossop High School’s Edmond Grosser topped ATAR

scores with 97 with principal Bevin Brooks describing him as an “all-rounder”. “Edmond is a fantastic allrounder, he won the A grade trophy for soccer, he’s been in the state squads for cycling, he’s a nice lad and he works hard and if you get an ATAR of 97, you’re also pretty clever too,” he said. Mr Brooks said a high number of students also included TAFE studies in year 12 this year. “What’s interesting about this year is the increasing number of students who have a large VET component in their SACE and we have 80 students who did some TAFE subjects,” he said. “Even the kids who are heading to university are taking the option of doing some VET components.” At Renmark High School dux went to Shaun Crouch with an ATAR of 93.6.

Riverland’s upstanding citizens awarded CITIZENS of the year across the Riverland have been announced with the worthy recipients dedicating a lot of time in the community in 2012. Dick Fogden became Loxton’s 2013 citizen of the year last Thursday following his endless dedication to charities and the township. “Loxton is a great place and I’d do anything for Loxton, I’d do anything for anybody really,” Mr Fogden said. He also said it was a “great thrill and a great honour” to be recognised for his community work that his wife Deidre is also involved in. “Deidre and I have done a lot of voluntary work that is good for the community and you meet a lot of people and that’s what I like,” he said. Mr Fogden has farmed all his life in the Nangari district and has been heavily involved in promoting Santa Gertrudis cattle and

represented the pork industry with United Farmers and Stock Owners Association. One of Dick’s greatest achievements is the fundraising dinners that Deidre and Dick have organised for charities such as the Crippled Children’s Association, Loxton Hospital and Royal Flying Doctors service to name a few. While Mr Fogden is looking forward to the official award presentation on Australia Day, he said there will be no time to rest. “We always help and the barbeques and that so I’ll be there doing that, I suppose I’ll have a couple of minutes off when Leon presents the award,” he said. Sid Copeland was named Waikerie’s Citizen of the Year after years of being actively involved in community fundraising for the Waikerie Hospital, local football and bowling clubs, rotary and probus clubs and delivering Meals on Wheels for the

He said he was “stunned” to receive news of the award and while he said he does not volunteer for accolades, “it’s nice when it comes”. “The year has been amazing,” he said.

MP calls for fund reinstatement MEMBER for Chaffey Tim Whetstone has called on the State Government to reopen another round of the Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund under its original guidelines. The State Government this week announced that the remaining $6.2 million in the fund would be held over to “build even stronger partnerships between the State and Federal Governments for even greater benefits to the Murray Darling Basin region in South Australia”. However, Mr Whetstone (pictured above) said the Riverland has been “short-changed” and he is furious about the current situation. “It was $20 million that was pledged to this region at the last state election and they are now short changing us $6.2 million,” he said. “The people are very disappointed to obviously miss out on funding but in the same token, we are now being held out to dry being told that if you didn’t receive funding this time, you can reapply for Commonwealth funding. “That Commonwealth funding is go-

We’re committed to the fund ing to be shared right around the Murray Darling Basin, it’s not a regional program for the Riverland. “That $100 million will be shared between four states in the Murray Darling Basin under their Regional Economic Diversification Program. “We don’t know whether these businesses who have applied to the Futures Fund actually qualify for an economic diversification program.” With 17 applications assessed in the final round of the fund and only six being successful, Mr Whetstone said many businesses will be disappointed after investing heavily in the application process. “They’ve had continual feedback from the government departments to amend the applications, which they’ve done and now we find the Minister is pulling the funding,” he said. “It has been poorly implemented from day one.”

SOLAR NEWS The Shift to Bigger Systems Just 18 months ago the average domestic solar system size was still under 3kw. Back then the price of Grid-Connect Solar Power Systems was approximately $3.50 per watt. Despite the fact that there were more attractive ﬁnancial incentives (rebates) at that time, systems were still (by today’s standards) reasonably expensive. With the recent news that rebates are being cut back again, and earlier than expected, it is timely to point out that systems right now are half the price that they were 18 months ago. The cost savings are due to increased production by solar manufacturers and a strong Aussie dollar resulting in reduced purchase prices on imported goods. This has had the ﬂow-on effect of encouraging people to put on larger systems that are more effective at eliminating their power bills. Average system size has nearly doubled over the last 18 months. The message here for those of you who are considering solar is: If you have missed out on the $800 rebate that has just been abolished, don’t discount solar. The bigger the system, the smaller the impact that the rebate cut has on the system price. Solar hardware is still at an all time low in terms of pricing.

THE State Government has promised Riverland residents that the remaining $6.2 million in the Sustainable Futures Fund will be spent in the region. State Regional Development Minister Gail Gago (pictured) said the $6.2 million will be used to leverage Federal funding for the region as part of the Federal Government’s $100 million Murray Darling Basin Regional Diversification Program. “With the remaning funds, we’ll use that as a leverage to that Federal funding to enable us to inject even more money into the region,” she told the Riverland Weekly.

Syntec Diamond Tools received $1.4 million towards relocating its manufacturing facilities from China to Berri, the Waikerie Community Hotel received $1 million to assist with its redevelopment, Riverland Almonds was awarded $608,252 to install a new technology radio frequency pasteuriser and retail packing line in its almond packing facility in Loxton, Orana Incorporated gained $335,000 as part of a project to set up a dry recycling operation on a coun-

cil owned waste recovery site, Renmark North based Lowana Fruits will expand its business packaging operations after receiving $318,552 and Renmark’s Quality Fruit Marketing Production received $189,630 to upgrade fruit grading and measuring equipment. State Regional Development Minister Gail Gago said she was “really pleased” with the high standard of applications and the level of diversity, with the latest round creating 83 new jobs. “The project has been a huge success,” she said. Minister Gago said $13.8 million of the fund has been spent leveraging $30.4 million in project costs and spend, cre-

Waikerie Hotel chairman Graeme Thompson said he was “delighted” to hear the news that the facility would receive $1 million as part of the rebuild. “We were delighted and very appreciative of Ms Gago and the board of the Riverland Futures Fund for selecting us,” he said. “It just enhances the project. “In other words it will enable us to rebuild the burnt out front area to a very high quality as well as hopefully going into room refurbishment.

“We are certainly targeting the four star type accommodation. “The main draw is to try and attract more tourism to support the local economy.”

a few times and I took them through the factory to have a look,” Berri Barmera Council chief executive officer David Beaton said. “It’s bigger than what they need but it’s got the power requirements that they have, so there may well be an opportunity for other busi-

nesses to partner with them and use the space as well.” Mr Beaton said after discussions with the business, Syntec has stated local workforce will be required at the Berri site. “They will be able to fill most of those postions that they’ve got from within the region, so they are bringing some of their

plant back from China, they are buying some new equipment in from Germany and India, so it will be excellent.” Speaking to ABC Radio, Mr Clift said Syntec was looking to move either in China or outside of the country due to increased costs and difficulty of doing business. The Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund

provided that option. “We did some number crunching and we found it was viable to bring it back into Australia,” he said. “The reality is if we never went to China we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to come back, we probably would have ended up purchasing off sub-contractors in China and shut our production entirely.”

Motorists hit with infringements BERRI business owners and employees are being hit with parking fines after a crackdown on illegal parking by the local council. Between October and November, Berri Barmera Council issued 58 expiation offences following what it claims as “concerns raised over the length of stays in on-street car parking”. A number of motorists have previously voiced concerns about on-street parking limits not being long enough.

Miss Pangallo has been forced to park a considerable distance from her work due to a lack of long term parking close to businesses. “On Thursday nights, I work until 9pm and by then it is dark and I have to walk down there,” she said. Berri Barmera Council environmental services and special projects manager Gary Brinkworth said council felt it was important to allow shoppers to be able to park close to businesses, particularly at Christmas time.

The idea of the time zones is to try and encourage a turnover of those car parks. As a result council will consider undertaking a car parking assessment within the Berri town centre in the 2013/14 budget with costs estimated to be about $12,000. Local woman Maria Pangallo works in the township of Berri and has had three parking fines in the last month. “Where are you supposed to park around here?” she said.

“The idea of the time zones is to try and encourage a turnover of those car parks to allow shoppers access to the shops,” Mr Brinkworth said. “Long term car parking doesn’t provide that opportunity so that’s why the town centre has time zones. “We have had time zones down there for some time and we haven’t

had an ability to provide any necessary resources to police those but it is a decision of council that we’ve allocated resources to enable our general inspector to undertake the policing of those time zones more frequently.” Mr Brinkworth said he recommends employers and employees park in unlimited time zones, such as the Berri Senior Citizens Hall, in the future as council works to resolve the parking issues. In a report to council, it states that a study of car parking in the town centre may help alleviate problems. “It may be considered appropriate to undertake a study of the car parking within the town centre which builds on the investigations already undertaken,” the report reads. “This investigation would use information already provided on the current situation of car parking and use it to produce recommendations for improving the car parking situation as policing the time zones only addresses one aspect of the issue we

currently face. “This would need to consider the needs for both long and short term car parking and the safety of pedestrian linkages to the long term parking areas.” Most car parking spaces in the Berri central business district are restricted to 15 minutes and up to two hours with fines for overstaying the limits generally at about $44.

Sharley accepts new role as general manager of peak tourism body TONY sharley was announced as the general manager of Destination Riverland this week. Following an extensive recruitment process to fill the position, Destination Riverland chairperson Joan Hall said she and members of the board were delighted that Mr Sharley (pictured) had accepted the role. She said Mr Sharley had made a significant contribution to the formative months and the many early achievements of Destination Riverland as executive officer. “Tony’s experience, networks and enthusiasm for growing local tour-

Mr Sharley said the region has had an exciting tourism year in 2012 with increased enquiries across the five Riverland Visitor Information Centres compared to 2011 and three of the major hotels (Renmark, Berri and Loxton) recording an increase in occupancy and revenue in 2011/12 compared to 2010/11. “The Outlook also lists several new and exciting tourism developments that will strengthen our appeal to visitors” he said.

Prepare for Christmas day at the twilight farmers’ market

INCE its introduction two years ago, the twilight Riverland Farmers’ Market has continued to grow as a popular destination in the lead up to Christmas. Offering everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood to crafts and festive gifts, the market is expected to attract hundreds of people to the Berri Senior Citizens Hall tomorrow from 4.30 to 8.30pm. Not-for-profit organisation Food Riverland, which runs the market, is encouraging locals and tourists alike to support the event held on Crawford Terrace, Berri. “Everyone should come down with their family and friends and support a local event,” market manager Rosalyn Kambouris said. The market has options for the perfect Christmas lunch or dinner including fruit, meat, seafood, puddings and much more. Having the market in the twilight time slot means people can head down after work. “It’s a great place to get your Christmas goodies and last minute

gifts such as festive hampers and gift baskets,” Rosalyn said. With up to 35 stallholders, including five craft stalls, there is sure to be something for everyone but Rosalyn warns that you need to get in early to beat the rush. After a huge turn out to last year’s twilight market, organisers have worked hard to change the layout of the night, expanding the outside area to create further space. There will be plenty of colour at the market with Glenview Poultry Farm’s Warner Brothers characters Foghorn Leghorn and Humpty Dumpty making their first public appearance in the Riverland, Arrosto Coffee mascot Mr Bean will also be in attendance, there will be plenty of giveaways for the children, as well as a major raffle and Blossom the Fiary will be providing face painting. Entertainment will be provided by Side by Side Band, Bill Johnson and Rosie Clark Dance Studio. Delicious food options amongst the many stalls include catering

Principal John Trobbiani said it was an emotional time for the remaining five students and the staff, however he said it was important to remember that schools were more than bricks and whiteboards. “Schools aren’t the buildings and the equipment, it’s the relationships that people build and the things you do together,” he said. Mr Trobbiani and four of the students will make their way to Monash Primary next year and were looking forward to their new adventure.

“We know it has been coming, we have planned for that and we supported each other,” he said. “Those people will go onto different classes and be able to continue their learning, it wont be as familiar for a little while but everyone will move on.” The students had their final day at the school last Wednesday with pupil free days taking place on Thursday and Friday to make way for removalists and trades people.

THE Dulcie Pistoor bell tower that has been a feature of Lyrup Primary School for 50 years is expected to be installed at SS Ellen Park after the school closed last week. A recmmendation was made during Tuesday night’s Renmark Paringa Council meeting to move the bell, which was recently dug up from the school grounds. It was a sad moment as the school’s siren rang for the last time on Friday afternoon after the school decided to close its doors in June.

TRAVELLERS are being urged to leave their fruit at home for the holidays and help prevent the spread of fruit fly, according to the Tri-State Fruit Fly Committee. The committee said that with a number of outbreaks affecting the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone it was important that travellers didn’t make the problem worse. “Warmer weather over the holiday break provides more favourable conditions for fruit fly,” committee spokesman Hugh Flett said. “It’s important to note that despite there being several outbreaks in the zone, the rules that restrict the transport of fresh fruit and vegetables still apply. “These rules are in place to prevent the spread of fruit fly into major fruit growing regions. “Random roadblocks operate throughout the zone during the holidays to enforce these rules and heavy fines can apply to people caught breaching the restrictions.” Mr Flett said fruit often looks perfectly sound on the outside. “Only when fruit is opened can an infestation be detected,” he said. “The only safe way to ensure you’re not letting fruit fly hitch a ride with you is to leave your fruit at home and buy some when you arrive at your destination.” Mr Flett said communities within the zone also had a role to play during the holiday break. “If local residents have backyard fruit trees they should take care to clean up any fruit lying on the ground,” he said. “If they’re expecting visitors these holidays, it’s a good idea to let them know about the restrictions.”

Volunteers help save regent parrots

AN Aboriginal Learning on Country (ALOC) team recently helped to monitor the nationally threatened regent parrot along the River Murray. Those in the ALOC team, which is employed by the Aboriginal Lands Trust of South Australia (ALT) and is based at the Kungun Centre in Glossop, are undertaking a 12 month traineeship towards a double certificate 3 in Conservation Land Management and Indigenous Land Management. Although the team has been involved in a range of activities, a particular highlight has been the their involvement with the Regent Parrot Recovery Project. ALOC trainee Josh Stone said the team undertook regent parrot surveys at dawn and dusk along the river and adjacent wetlands between Blanchetown and Swan

Brush the sage and onion butter all over the turkey and return to the oven, uncovered, for 45 mins until crisp and dark golden. If you’re making the roasties, then start them in the oven when the turkey goes back in, uncovered.

7kg fresh turkey 2 onions, halved 1 lemon, quartered 75g soft butter 3 tbsp finely chopped fresh sage 2 tbsp plain flour 200ml Marsala wine or Madeira 400-500ml hot chicken stock 1 tbsp cranberry jelly

1. Heat oven to 170C on a fan forced overn or 150C on gas for 3 to 4 minutes and place the turkey in a large roasting tin. Tuck 3 of the onion halves and the lemon quarters into the cavity and season. Cover with foil, make sure there’s plenty of space between the turkey and foil for the air to circulate and seal the edges tightly so that no steam escapes. Roast for 4 hrs.

3. Transfer the turkey to a warm serving plate, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 30 mins. Tip the juices out of the pan into a bowl, leave for a moment to settle, then scoop the but-
