V&A’s summer fashion exhibition, Shoes: Pleasure and Pain

T

he transformative power of extreme footwear will be explored in the V&A’s summer fashion exhibition, Shoes: Pleasure and Pain. More than 200 pairs of historic and contemporary shoes from around the world will be on display, many for the first time. The exhibition will explore the agonizing aspect of wearing shoes as well as the euphoria and obsession they can inspire. The V&A’s shoe collection is unrivalled, spanning the globe and over 2000 years. The exhibition curator Helen Persson has delved into this, other international collections and the wardrobes of private individuals to present an exceptional range of shoes, from a sandal decorated in pure gold leaf from ancient Egypt to shoes created using 3D printing. Shoes worn by or associated with high profile figures including Marilyn Monroe, Queen Victoria, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kylie Minogue and the Hon Daphne Guinness will be shown alongside the ballet slippers designed for Moira Shearer in the 1948 film The Red Shoes and the blue crocodile shoes by Vivienne Westwood that caused Naomi Campbell to take a tumble in the 1990s. Footwear by 70 named designers including Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo will be on display.

Helen Persson said: “Shoes are one of the most telling aspects of dress. Beautiful, sculptural objects, they are also powerful indicators of gender, status, identity, taste and even sexual preference. Our choice in shoes can help project an image of who we want to be.” The exhibition will be shown over two floors and feature men’s and women’s shoes. The first floor will examine three themes: transformation, status and seduction. ‘Transformation’ will present shoes that are the things of myth and legend, opening with different cultural interpretations of the Cinderella story from across the globe. ‘Status’ will reveal how impractical shoes have been worn to represent privileged and leisurely lifestyles – their design, shape and material can often make them unsuitable for walking – and how shoes also dictate the way in which the wearer moves, how they are seen and even heard. Shoes on display will include Indian men’s shoes with extremely long toes and noisy slap sole shoes worn in Europe during the 17th century. Within ‘Seduction’, the shoes represent an expression of sexual empowerment or a passive source of pleasure. High Japanese geta, extreme heels and tight‑laced leather boots will be on display as well as examples of erotic styles channeled by mainstream fashion in recent years. In contrast, the laboratory style setting of the first floor gallery is dedicated to dissecting the processes involved in designing and creating footwear, laying out the story from concept to final shoe. This will be enhanced by films and animations that peel back the layers of a shoe and reveal how they are made. Designer sketches, materials, embellishments and shoe lasts, such as the lasts created by H. & M. Rayne for Princess Diana, will be on show, alongside ‘pullovers’ from Roger Vivier for Christian Dior. The section will highlight the makers’ ingenuity in creating innovative styles and dealing with the structural challenges of creating ever-higher heels and more dramatic shapes and will feature filmed interviews with five designers and makers. The exhibition will examine shifts in consumption and production – with examples from an 18th‑century ‘cheap shoe warehouse’, one‑off handmade men’s brogues and trainers made in China. The last section of the exhibition will look at shoes as commodities and collectibles. Six different collections will be presented from trainers to luxury footwear and culminate in a shoe from that ultimate shoe collector, Imelda Marcos.

BLEWCOAT

From Salvador Dali to Man Ray and Horst P, this season beauty trends take their cues from Surrealist art.

The New Natural Fresh, subtle and tousled waves – the secret to working SS15 beauty trends. There is something irresistibly seductive about perfectly textured hair. “Loose movement and soft textures instantly make a short style look feminine and flattering,” says Gabin Ahmed, Assistant Creative Director at Sassoon Salon, Mayfair. Try It… Use a medium size barrel tong and alternate the size of each section for a more natural result. Ruffle the hair through with a texturising product.

Colour Lustre Take your cues from a Surrealist approach and refresh your hair colour this season. Dreamlike shades of beautiful colour are the essential choice. The key to mastering the palette? “Colours are diffused together elegantly from dark to light and back again,” says Alliah Baterip, Senior Colour Director at Sassoon Salon, Mayfair. This creates a subtle flow of colours to enhance shine and incredible fibre-optic iridescence. Try It… Book the ultimate holistic three tier colour service: Bespoke Colour, Seal Colour Treatment & Home Hair Colour. Save £20 when you book Colour Prestige.

The New Short The bob has been the haircut of choice for brazen females of the past like Coco Chanel and today the ‘lob’ - a longer, more dishevelled bob, seems to be the hottest hair trend every girl wants. Ask your stylist for a cut that encourages movement. To keep the style modern, don’t forget the importance of cool-girl texture. A sea, salt spray is the perfect ‘Sienna’ texture product. Try it… This look can be worn straight, textured, or wavy. “Try textured waves that ooze slept-in insouciance for a night out or keep it sleek, chic and modern by tucking one side behind your ear,” says Gabin Ahmed, Assistant Creative Director at Sassoon Salon, Mayfair. 60 South Molton St, London W1K 5SW For appointments call: 020 7491 8848

Spring has sprung and, boy, what lovely weather we are having! Welcome to the spring issue of the Journals. We hope that this edition will keep you smiling with lots of interesting and informative articles to read including a fantastic interview with Raymond Blanc helping to celebrate Brasserie Blanc Beaconsfield’s first birthday. Our very own journalist, Lorraine Fleming, gives you her take on her experience visiting Martin Wishart’s Restaurant, situated on the delightful shorefront of the water of Leith, in the beautiful city of Edinburgh. Hopefully her article will encourage our readers to visit this wonderful restaurant and beautiful city. We were very privileged to have an interview with John Challis, otherwise known as the colourful character Boycie in Only Fools and Horses. It was an absolute pleasure to talk with John – and a bonus as he also went into character during the interview, for our ears only! He is, of course, also a truly wonderful Shakespearian actor and if you would like to purchase a copy of John’s new book, Being Boycie, it is available at www.wigmorebooks.com. Paul’s Boutique shows us the way with the latest bags and holdall fashion. And what better accessory befits a handbag than the ultimate shoe and on that subject we have written about the forthcoming Shoe: Pleasure & Pain Exhibition at the V&A which looks to be well worth a visit. In our Health and Beauty they report on the Art of Beauty and Sassoon Salon presents Umbra SS15 to give you a taster. Some of the girls from the office were lucky enough to enjoy a lovely afternoon at Sketch, a fabulous venue in the heart of Mayfair enviable for its food, art and music they reported back, and they can add Afternoon Tea to that now as well – superb. And finally, Team Redbrook would like to say a huge thank you to Clara Copley for our wonderful spring front covers. Enjoy reading.

Jaguar and Bremont

MKI

MKII

Two new watch collaborations announced. These exciting introductions made their global debut at the Baselworld Watch Show, March 2015.

13 the riverside journals

T

he two British firms are cementing their long-term partnership following an overwhelming response to the creation of six Bremont chronometers which complement each of the six ‘continuation’ lightweight E-Type sports racing cars currently being built by Jaguar. These watches are both dedicated to the road-going Jaguar E-Type which at its 1961 launch was not only the fastest production car in the world but, according to Enzo Ferrari, the most beautiful. In working to capture the E-Type’s essence in a wrist watch, Jaguar’s Director of Design Ian Callum and the creative team at Bremont homed-in on another of its signature features – the dashboard. At its heart are the speedometer and tachymeter (or ‘rev counter’) and it is these that inspired the look of the new Bremont Jaguar MKI and MKII watches. The MKI responds to the call for a more accessible version of the original ‘Lightweight’ limited edition watch by reproducing many of its design features but substituting the white gold and aluminium of the Lightweight’s case for a slimmer version in polished stainless steel. Save for the addition of a date window at the six o’clock position, the tachymetre-inspired dial is similar to that of the Lightweight, featuring an off-set small seconds indicator and a distinctive ‘red line’ quadrant between three and four o’clock. Behind the dial and double-domed crystal of the 43mm MKI watch lies a new movement with date functionality based on Bremont’s meticulously finished self-winding proprietary BWC/01. The E-Type’s speedometer and tachymeter inspired the design of the Bremont Jaguar MKI and MKII. Turning the MKI over not only reveals the beautifully finished movement through the sapphire crystal case back, but also one of the most intriguing features of the watch: a striking automatic winding weight in the form of an exquisite miniaturisation of a three-spoke E-Type steering wheel, complete with the iconic Jaguar head at its centre. The MKII, meanwhile, instantly transports the wearer back to the golden era of 1960s sports car motoring, its black dial carrying the Jaguar heritage logo above the six o’clock position and its hour markings being in the style of the numerals found on E-Type instruments. The classic chronograph layout – featuring two subdials at the three o’clock and nine o’clock positions – is achieved through the use of the beautifully decorated BE-50AE automatic movement which has been specially customised by Bremont to a unique specification, a subtle ‘red line’ on the 60-minute counter paying homage to the E-Type’s tachymeter. The 43mm stainless steel case – which is fitted with a double-domed crystal to enhance the vintage appearance of the watch – is made entirely in the UK by Bremont using its renowned, three-part ‘Trip-Tick’ technology which ensures a hardness seven times greater than that of a normal steel watch. The E-Type’s steering wheel inspired the design of the Bremont Jaguar MKI and MKII rotors. Visible through a sapphire crystal case back, the mechanism again pays tribute to the E-Type with an automatic ‘steering wheel’ winding weight in the same style as that of the MKI. Further automotive imagery can be seen in the ‘tyre tread’ winding crown, which is topped with the Jaguar heritage logo to match that of the dial.

P

aul Slade, creative director, founded the iconic brand at London’s Portobello Road market back in 2000. It quickly became highly sought after due to its eye-catching and bold designs and was soon seen on the arm of many fashion influencers and celebrities. Today, Paul’s Boutique focus on creating stylish premium handbags which still encapsulate Paul’s love of quirky prints, design, trends and fashion. Dynamic shapes and bright pops of colour feature throughout the collection, adding a fun and unique twist to any outfit. The latest Spring collection features mixed textures, strong colours and playful graphic prints combined with Paul’s distinctive contemporary edge. Styles include the bestselling Maisy, a Paul’s Boutique classic, as well as new shapes including the Betsy oversized tote, the Edie handheld bag and the Alexa premium suede shoulder style. Smaller styles such as the Nicole cross-body bag and the Hattie duffle bag are perfect for work or weekend wear. Vibrant zig-zag prints, colourful faux snake and luxurious suede are just a few of the must-have looks this season which have caught the attention of fashion editors across the globe. Signature prints, including animal and geometric designs, have been refreshed and reworked, and even classic blacks and neutrals feature a flash of hidden neon. As the brand has evolved over the years, Paul’s Boutique now has a successful online presence at www.paulsboutique.com, a fast growing social media audience, and is available at premium retailers and etailers in the UK. The brand also has a huge following internationally, from Europe to Asia. So what’s next for a brand that seems to have every box ticked? Fourteen years in the fashion industry is a long time but Paul continues to push boundaries, and create trends rather than following. There are exciting plans for a stand-alone Paul’s Boutique store in London, and potential high profile design collaborations, which would cement their status as an accessible and affordable accessories label.

Life lessons:

16 the riverside journals

Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger is celebrating 3o years at the top of the fashion industry so let’s take a look at some of the lessons he learnt along the way.

Lesson 1

Keep your eye on the ball A legend in the fashion world, Hilfiger came from a grassroots background where he first launched a clothes store while he was still at college, and wet behind the ears. He was the cool kid who had all the most stylish threads so when, still in his senior year, he brought fashions from inner city New York and sold them in his first store People’s Place, which was located in the outskirts of NYC in his hometown Elmira, it was no surprise that it gave him success in his teens and early twenties. The young designer was in love with UK rock bands, such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Who, so he made it his business to bring those looks of the day to young America. He bleach dyed denim bell-bottom jeans, he found bongs and beads and sold them and all that was part of the culture in his thriving shop. With the look came the lifestyle and Hilfiger spent most of his time hanging out in hip clubs, such as Max’s Kansas City and Studio 54, rubbing shoulders with the ‘in crowd’. He had to be a part of the scene and right in the middle of it was where he lost sight of the business and finally had to file a Chapter 11 after almost going bankrupt. It was an embarrassing wake-up call for the 25-year-old self starter.

Lesson 2

Take on the challenge Before the making of his lifestyle brand, Hilfiger worked at some fashion companies and took on freelance design assignments. One may have thought at the time that it was a big break for him when he landed a job at Calvin Klein but that was not where the story ended. Four days before he was to fly to Hong Kong to take on the role, businessman Mohan Murjani approached him saying he wanted to back an American menswear designer. Hilfiger had a choice: go and work for Calvin Klein or compete with the powerful fashion label. He chose the latter.

Lesson 3

Stick to what you know Hip hop, baggy jeans and Tommy Hilfiger all became synonymous with each other in the 1990s. Kate Moss was serenaded by Treach of rap act Naughty by Nature as she walked the spring summer show in 1997, the late Aaliyah famously appeared in a Tommy Hilfiger commercial, Coolio and Puffy (now P Diddy) walked his shows and girlband TLC rocked the Tommy Hilfiger boxers wearing them with the logo peeking out under low-slung baggy jeans. The list of urban Hilfiger moments goes on and the impact of the brand’s popularity with hip hop took Tommy Hilfiger in a new direction as the brand chased the trend, but it got left out in the cold when hip hop moguls, including P Diddy and Russell Simmons, came out with their own clothing lines and took a chunk of the business. It was time for Tommy Hilfiger to go back to his roots. Lesson 4

Be out in left field

Lesson 5

Don’t forget to celebrate Tommy Hilfiger the brand has always been a celebration of being carefree, youthful and happy. It is a brand that doesn’t take itself too seriously and makes us think of shiny happy people. This year the 63-year-old designer is celebrating his 30-year anniversary with events in London and New York to coincide with the autumn/winter collection that knocked the socks off the fashion industry during the February collections.

Images: Both big in style and business Tommy Hilfiger celebrated his 30-year anniversary with an autumn/winter collection that married varsity sportswear with luxury and for his winning point he showed it in New York on a football pitch. 17 the riverside journals

Tommy Hilfiger the designer is a connoisseur of casual dressing. When he launched the brand in 1985 with a menswear line that included oversized shirts, which were worn untucked over baggy jeans or trousers, at a time when other labels were offering a more fitted look. His style took off. Street fashions were hot 10 years ago but Tommy Hilfiger went the other way and launched his H line of luxury fitted pieces and featured David Bowie and his wife Iman in the advertising campaign. Hilfiger famously said that it worked because ‘we were zigging while everyone else was zagging’.

“STARTING in 2008 the Garden Players’ productions have become a much anticipated annual event in the area, so it was with great excitement that I looked forward to their latest performance. While the setting was stunning, and a star in itself, the cast really shone.”

“THE Garden Players reignited my love for William Shakespeare - it was a real pleasure to see one of his best plays performed by such a competent cast.”

and Stuart & Trish Fletcher

The Garden Players Grade II listed Stubbings House was built in 1750 by Eric Ambler (attorney general) and later added to in the Victorian era. Occupants have included: Guy Carleton, 1st Baron of Dorchester, previous Governor of Quebec, Canada 1786; Henry Skrine and family, Tea Estates Ceylon (Sri Lanka); Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, during WWll. As the previous occupier to the current owners, Sir Thomas Merton, physicist and art collector, converted the Stable block into the largest private laboratory in the UK. A Professor of spectroscopy at Oxford, his contributions to radar development and range finders for fighter aircraft led to his knighthood in 1944 for his wartime services to the country. The current owners, Mr and Mrs Dudley Good, have been in occupation since September 1977. The gardens are dominated by the lawn and the surrounding trees. The two giant Cedars (Cedrus Libani) are estimated to be in excess of 200 years old and thought to be amongst the largest Cedars in the country. The Monkey Puzzle Tree (Araucaria) is also a noted specimen. Beyond the lawn across the HA-HA the arable land of the estate stretches to the trees beyond. Flanking the gardens to the south are some 250 acres of woodland, known as Maidenhead Thicket, managed by The National Trust. The gardens were first opened to the public under the National Garden Scheme when it was inaugurated in 1927. The walled garden, previously the vegetable garden to the main house, has functioned as part of the retail nursery for the past 25 years, specialising in mature, Topiary, and unusual plants. The Café, overlooking the walled garden is a relatively new addition. Built on the site of a Victorian greenhouse, it has already established itself as a popular local destination serving Coffee/Tea and meals from breakfast to afternoon tea. Part of the house and outbuildings including the old laboratory building are ‘Let’ as executive office accommodation to a number of local and international companies including IBM. Apart from the current production of Henry IV Part 1, the gardens have formed the background of the annual Stubbings Opera event for the last 15 years. This year’s Opera will be announced shortly. The gardens are also available to let for wedding receptions. For further information visit the website www.stubbingsnursery.co.uk Please call Judith Timewell at 01628 522864 or write to

“Shakespeare’s greatest history and greatest comedy all rolled into one and full of superb characters!” This year’s production will be produced by John Timewell who will be directing his third new production for the company. John has gathered around him a cast of well-known local actors, many of whom are stalwarts of The Garden Players, as well as some exciting newcomers. Since the inaugural 2009 production of Much Ado About Nothing, The Garden Players have raised in excess of £63,000 for various charities. Our aims are to stage high quality productions while maximising charitable donations and public awareness of the charities being supported. The Garden Players are fortunate to be supported once again, by Deloitte and Stuart & Trish Fletcher as the main sponsors, and our thanks go to them for their continued and invaluable contributions. Each year all proceeds of The Garden Players’ production are donated to charity. This year we are supporting Child Bereavement UK and SportsAble:Child Bereavement UK is a national charity based near High Wycombe which supports parents and children when there is a bereavement in their family. SportsAble is a sports disability charity, dedicated to the promotion of awareness of disability through sport and recreational activity. Stubbings House

s the changing season ushers in hope for the freshness of Spring and warmer weather, The Garden Players begin rehearsals on another Shakespeare play for our many friends and the loyal supporters of our two charities. This year’s exciting new production will be one of Shakespeare’s masterpieces, Henry IV Part 1. Once again by kind permission of the current owners Mr & Mrs Dudley Good, the superb gardens and lawns of Stubbings House, Maidenhead, a truly stunning venue will be our outdoor theatre from June 17th to June 20th for our performances of Henry IV Part 1. The lawns will be open for picnics from 5.30pm prior to each performance. While the performances will be open air, our audiences will again be in the covered stand with raised seating which was so successful in improving comfort and visibility last summer. England is on the brink of civil war as the rebels, led by the Earls of Worcester and Northumberland and his son, the valiant Hotspur, plot their uprising. Meanwhile the King’s son Prince Henry (Hal) is living a life of debauchery with Sir John Falstaff and his cronies in Mistress Quickly’s tavern and other bawdy dens in Eastcheap. Can Hal rouse himself to take on Hotspur and save his father’s throne?

LOOK YOUNGER 24AHOURS DAY

chieving our personal best, whatever that looks like, is something we all need to aspire to. The first step to a successful PB is engagement; change how you think. Stop focusing on what you don’t have, instead focus on what you do. Consider how our actions impact on the success and failure of both ourselves, and those around us. If you expect nothing, you get nothing – low expectations result in low achievement. However, if you pitch high, there is nothing to stop you reaching for the stars! When you don’t invest time and energy into yourself, your future or the people around you, the message you send is: ‘you/I have little value and the effort I put in will not justify the return’. However, positive input can make a world of difference – self-believe and confidence will increase, and so too will the ability to achieve. If your first response is to criticize and look for the negative, your focus is on the ‘can’t do’ rather than ‘can do’. Instead think outcome and solution – my dream outcome is x and to achieve this I need to do y. By having a plan you are half way to success; all you need to do is implement it! Finally, smile and the world smiles with you! It may be trite, but it’s true, people like to be around positive people, and positive people are successful people, so, pitch high, and aspire to be the very best you can be. Change begins by thinking, and then acting differently. Sometimes we can make those changes on our own; sometimes we need support to make change happen. Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, is available by appointment for private consultations and motivational meetings.

have been lucky enough to drive many wonderful cars in my career as a motoring journalist. But none has created as much of a stir as the original Smart ForTwo – or the City Coupé as it was known then – going from home to office through north London in early 1998. Not available to buy at that point, this was the only one in the country. Talk about a head-turner! People actually knocked on the windows to ask what it was as I sat at traffic lights. More than 100,000 UK sales later, this year sees the launch of the thirdgeneration car. It’s new from the ground up and comes with the secondgeneration ForFour in tow. They have been designed and built together as siblings, unlike the last four-seater – axed in 2006 – which was a reskinned Mitsubishi Colt. Perhaps surprising is how close the two cars are in price; they are available from £11,125 and £11,620 respectively, and I suspect some customers will walk into a Smart dealership wanting a ForTwo and come away with a ForFour because of the extra practicality two more doors and seats offers. On monthly finance it’s about £10 extra. Worth noting is that the ForFour is about £2,000 more expensive than the Renault Twingo with which it shares an architecture. Smart says that’s because it’s got extra features and has been re-engineered to make it more refined. The evidence from my test drive suggests that has worked; I wasn’t a big fan of how the Twingo soaked up the bumps, but the Smart is much better. Money has also been spent on making it more practical, so the rear doors open to almost 90 degrees to aid access.

drive

I also drove the 1.0-litre 71bhp ForTwo with the five-speed manual gearbox – a first for Smart as they’ve all been automatics before – and felt it did a good job. However, I didn’t like the steering; it’s fine at urban speeds but on the open road the wheel lacked weight as it turned, leaving me with a feeling that it wasn’t connected to what was happening at the road surface. The second engine is a 900cc 90bhp turbo, and both come in three trim levels – Passion, Prime and Proxy. The entry spec includes 15-inch eight-spoke alloy wheels, automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and a choice of orange/black or white/black interior. Buy the Proxy and you get a sports leather multifunction steering wheel, suspension lowered by 10mm, rubber studded alloy sports pedals and a chrome exhaust finisher. The ForTwo’s USP continues to be its size and agility. At just 2.69 metres long it has a tiny turning circle, but the trade-off it is the microscopic boot behind the split tailgate. You’ll have seen the TV advert for the ForTwo and ForFour, which is unusual in that it features both cars. Smart says they are distinct models, but admits that while the brand has been around for 17 years, launching two new versions at the same time is uncharted territory. It doesn’t really know what the sales split between the cars will be. Given the growth in popularity of funky small cars since 1998, I suspect both will sell well.

you fuel you want. It authenticates the transaction and by the time you’ve filled up a receipt has been sent to the phone. Job done. Shell says it’s about offering choice and convenience to customers. It reckons they might include busy parents who want the ease of remaining by their vehicle with their children, to those in a rush who want to fuel up and pay as quickly as possible. The vast majority of the company’s 1,000 service stations are taking part. Personally, I like a trip into the shop to pay. It means I can have a quick look at the newspaper front pages or treat myself to a coffee.

Do you remember all the warnings about using your mobile phone on a fuel forecourt? For years we’ve been led to believe it could turn us, our car and everyone in a 100-metre radius, into crispy bacon. But all that seems to have been conveniently forgotten. Fuel giant Shell has partnered with PayPal to become the first of the big forecourt operators to offer smartphone pump payments. To be launched later this year via Android and iOS apps, the driver pulls up at a vacant pump. Geo-location means the phone knows which site you’re at, so you simply select the pump number on the app and how much

The Bentley Boys

L

ong before the age of the pop idol, there was a group of chaps that everyone wanted to be like; the ‘Bentley Boys’. This dozen or so dashing derringdoers were England’s finest; being from the wealthiest stock, they dressed immaculately, had impeccable manners and a limitless passion for speed and luxury. The triumphs and incredible speeds achieved by drivers on the iconic racing track brought with it fame and reputation and the car of choice for many of these speeding Lotharios was the Bentley and so the name was born. The world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit was built at Brooklands, Surrey in 1907 and, as a post-First World War Britain began to flourish, it quickly became established on the social calendar. By the 1920s racing had become a serious business and the glamour and daring that went with it caught the attention of the press and lifestyle magazines that were emerging at the time. Reading like a thriller novel, the public held the Bentley Boys in awe imagining them living in lavish Mayfair apartments with a girl on each arm playing the Stock Exchange and gambling in nightclubs. One of the most distinguished of this group was Woolf “Babe” Barnato. Wealthy, gifted, he excelled at sport, bred racehorses, and when he wasn’t racing or sailing divided his time between the south of France and his magnificent house in Lingfield, Surrey where he threw parties to match Gatsby himself. Barnato won Le Mans three years in a row: 1928 – ’30 and won the 1929 Six Hours Race and the 1930 Double Twelve, both at Brooklands. According to founder Walter Owen Bentley (known simply as ‘W.O.’), Sir Henry Ralph Stanley ‘Tim’ Birkin was “the greatest British driver of his day” and lived at a furious speed even after crossing the finishing line. Life was never dull with Tim around. Both he and Barnato, along with fellow reveller and record breaking aviator Glen Kidston, resided in adjacent flats in the south-east corner of Grosvenor Square in London’s Mayfair and to this day, some London taxi drivers still refer to the area as ‘Bentley Corner’. The group shot illustrated clearly shows why as often, a row of Bentleys would be parked up outside no doubt still warm from the previous nights revelry. From left to right and looking as sartorially splendid as their cars, they are: Frank Clement, S.C.H. ‘Sammy’ Davis, Dr J. Dudley “Benjy” Benjafield, Bernard Rubin, Woolf ‘Babe’ Barnato and Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin. The sign on the railings says Mount Street Public Gardens and is in the Mayfair district. Like all good things, there has to be an end and gradually the clan dispersed. Barnato served in the RAF in WWII and died at just 53 in 1948 after an operation. On 7 May 1933, during a pit stop at the Tripoli Grand Prix, Birkin bent down to pick up a cigarette lighter and burnt his arm on an exhaust pipe. It is said this led to complications and ultimately caused his death at just 37. In 1931 Kidston died after his aircraft broke up over the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. Undoubtedly, the Boys’ fierce competitive spirit and dedication to the marque contributed to Bentley achieving four consecutive victories at the 24 hours of Le Mans from 1927 to 1930 and, supported by a great deal of Barnato’s own wealth to save it from decline, created a ‘brand’ image for Bentley that has stood for luxury, style and performance ever since.

hen James Constantinou saw a gap in the market and set up his pawnbroking business in affluent Surrey, he had no idea how successful his business would be. Since 2009 Prestige Pawnbrokers has gone from strength to strength. James’s timing was impeccable – from chatting with his friends and contacts James could see that the recession was hitting hard. There was a complete change in lifestyle for many successful people who were asset rich but who were suddenly finding financial doors closing where before they had been waiting with open arms…positively encouraging people to borrow As the economy started to decline, banks were literally closing up shop leaving many people in a very tricky situation. With the realisation that they no longer had access to normal credit lines, people were fast becoming cash poor and looking for other options. This is where James found his niche, offering short-term finance to people who were being refused credit from their banks. James’s business depended on people finding valuable possessions and turning them into instant cash…suddenly looking in your wardrobe became serious business! Dusting off your Hermes bag could mean the school fees sorted for another term! The much loved but unworn Rolex might just pay off your credit card or offer you some mortgage payment relief…Granny’s old diamond bracelet might pay for the wedding you had been planning before the recession hit! Far from the old vision of pawnbroking – which brings to mind some sad Dickensian story – James was offering people a secure option whereby you could raise money against your valuables but with the option to claim them back after seven months by paying the loan back or simply paying the interest and extending the loan. Prestige has come a long way since the early days and James now has branches in Richmond and Hatton Garden as well as his original shop in Weybridge. The business has grown enormously. James has developed his website (www.prestigepawnbrokers.co.uk) and the company now has an eShop (http://shop.prestigepawnbrokers.co.uk/) where you can buy beautiful pre-loved items at a fraction of the actual value – perfect for those seeking a real bargain. Perhaps one of James’s most notable achievements last year was being noticed by Channel 4. With quite a bit of coverage in the national newspapers, Prestige Pawnbrokers was picked up by Channel 4, who thought that the nature of high end pawnbroking would make an interesting documentary. Posh Pawn is now into its fourth series having been overwhelmingly popular. The TV show burst onto our screens last spring and continues to be astoundingly popular. Since filming started, James feels that the show reflects life at the shop branches and whilst we see some pretty interesting artefacts coming through, the main core business is jewellery. Usually heirlooms or gifts – the jewellery business is booming! James always seeks a second opinion and with jewellery his first stop for a valuation is always his great colleague Ian Towning – who has proven a firm TV favourite during the show. With the show back on Channel 4 in August and November it’s been a great success. If you haven’t already seen it, it makes compelling viewing and if you are a jewellery lover you will definitely see some fabulous pieces come through the Prestige Pawnbroker shop doors!

hen on a trip to Edinburgh recently we were invited to have dinner at Martin Wishart’s restaurant. Obviously we’d heard of Martin and his many accolades – the highest of which would have to be his two Michelin stars, one awarded in 2001 which has been maintained to the present date, the other in 2011 for his restaurant in Loch Lomond, but I had never sampled his menu. We arrived at a place known to many as The Shore, in Leith. It’s steeped in history and used to be where, as its title suggests, the boats came in and the ladies of the night would meet the sailors! However, that was a long time ago and it’s now a buzzing metropolis of bars and restaurants for the young, middle-aged and silver surfers to hang out. The MW restaurant has a modern façade, and a warm and hearty Scottish welcome awaits you on arrival where you can be relieved of the layers you may have donned to keep you dry and warm in weather conditions the city of Edinburgh sometimes throws at you. We were comfortably seated, all three of us, at a round table where our neighbouring diners were far enough away so as not to eavesdrop on our conversations but close enough should we wish to share a mmmm or an ahhh at the delights of our courses. MW has thought carefully about what the customer would like and has not one but three tasting menus; the vegetarian, one for the fish, seafood and crustacean lovers, which was introduced to the restaurant two years ago, and one for the carnivores amongst us. So, being in a trio, we decided to have one of each, getting the full benefit of the MW touch. In fact 97% of the covers in the restaurant opt for the tasting menus which tells you how good they are. We had a lovely glass of champagne to start our evening with the chef’s Amouse Bouche. It would take me far to long to detail and do justice to every dish we all sampled so I asked my colleagues to pick the one that stood out for them. The vegetarian menu was tasted by a non-vegetarian who couldn’t pick one in particular but said each dish was a surprise (as she thought she would miss the fish or meat content) and a delight. In fact, she did state she may be converted to vegetarianism after the Romano red pepper, Bombay saffron rice, artichoke and tomato which was preceded by the leek and avocado crème fraiche and Tosazu sauce and followed by the potato truffle yolk, roasted onion and mimolette which truly hit the top of the taste palette. Moving on to the other two choices from the three tasting menus I would have to say it is really difficult to condense but for me, of the six course normal tasting menu I loved the Border’s Roe Deer with braised lettuce, carrot, date and bbq winter onion. I can still conjure up the taste as I write about it. The fish menu had everything from oysters, halibut, and scallops to sea bass and cod. However, I think my colleague’s particular favourite came in the form of the ivoire white chocolate mousse milk sheet, ginger biscuit, rhubarb sorbet. To summarize I would most definitely make MW a pre-booked stop on your visit to Edinburgh, details below.

Shades of Cool

C

ool and soft are the words that define the new season of colour for Spring 2015. We go back in time, yet again, to the sophistication and tender touch of ethereal understated brights, pale pastels and hues inspired by nature-like neutrals. As we head into the warm seasons, designers revel in floral, folksy and tropical landscapes giving our homes and our wardrobe a sense of wholesome well being. As Leatrice Eisenman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute comments, “There is a growing movement to step out and create ‘quiet zones’ to disconnect from technology and unwind. Colour choices follow the same minimalistic ‘en plein air’ theme, taking a cue from nature rather than being mechanically manipulated.” The question then becomes, “How do I achieve this cool, calm and collected trend at home without it taking over my life?” Easy. Soft furnishings. And super cool lighting pieces. You can easily transform any room by simply swapping accessories and some soft furnishings, rejuvenating the space to make it feel fresh and inviting. We’ve done all the work for you and put together an inspiring selection of some of our favourite pieces from The Longest Stay that will have you wishing spring had sprung so much earlier! If you’re looking to rejuvenate your living environment, use shades of aquamarine and classic blue to create a stress free, expansive and open space. This digitally printed cushion by Fenton is a winner. Pair it with the full-bodied, delicious natural earthiness of marsala – a colour with red brown roots – to create a gorgeous juxtaposition or with glacier grey for a more tonal look. Use the Holbora Rug as a base and add layers of contrast in muted custard, tans, terracotta, toasted vanilla and tangerine. Both Danish brand Gubi and the convergence of classical English and punk rock culture that Innermost exhibit have lighting pieces that bring the look together in an instant. Opt for the Glaze pendant in copper or for the glossy tangerine pendant light to create a soft glow, add the supple Butterfly saddle leather chair by Artifort and re-energize in your very own ‘quiet zone’. It’s not all sunshine during the spring months, so prepare for an evening chill with this double-duty lightweight throw or shawl. Drape it over your sofa or over yourself and wear it on a casual night out. Its custard and almond tinge fit perfectly into this season’s top 10 colours and its thin waist belt is a coveted detail. Last but certainly not least, spring cannot be complete without a shade of pink – strawberry ice – reminiscent of confectionary but also injecting a fresh and healthy glow to any interior design scheme. To avoid it looking like “Mr. Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe” keep this hue away from minty green, opt for one or the other. They both work wonders with marsala or glacier grey, but not at the same time.

atural stone adds a touch of luxury to homes and has been used since Roman times to make bathing special. Whether you prefer to soak your cares away in a bath or blast them with a power shower, a stone bathroom can add to the experience. Cool marble vanity tops teamed with tiles and bath surrounds and perhaps a marble basin, tumbled travertine for that lived in feel, or limestone shower trays to match the limestone tiles and basin. Quartz & marble composites can also be used where more uniformity is required. Stone is not only stylish and versatile it is extremely durable, needing only a little care and attention to last years. stoneCIRCLE has been making stone products in its state-of-the-art Basingstoke factory since 1968. The Garden For All Seasons – A Design Study

Happy Gardening! Richard

W

hen presented with a new space in which to design and install a completely new courtyard garden you need to take time to assimilate an intimate feeling of the space itself. This will determine how you see that space, how you feel that you can develop that space, and importantly how you can incorporate the client’s wishes. I was presented with such a challenge recently but thankfully I had the confidence of the client to interpret the space much to my own design instincts. The only brief from the client was, “The hot tub must stay, the garden must be low maintenance and we need to be able to walk around in our bare feet!” and thus the design challenge commenced. The courtyard was an irregular shape with very limited access for machinery to assist in the transformation. Ownership of the existing garden had been gradually ceded to two extremely large, but gentle, Irish Wolfhounds. The existing hot tub was even enclosed in a steel mesh cage to stop the dogs from gnawing at it! So, obviously, the first thing was to build new accommodation for the dogs outside of the courtyard area. Having done this the planning of the new courtyard garden could begin. The space was roughly the shape of a right-angled triangle with the rear and side walls of the house forming the right angle and a red brick boundary wall forming the longest side, or hypotenuse, enclosing the courtyard completely. Two sets of French doors opened on to the courtyard and further access to and from the courtyard could be had through a wide door into the garage. It was agreed that there was nothing of merit to retain in the existing garden and that everything must go. Everything, that is, except the top security hot tub. With the dogs having settled in to their new accommodation, we were now able to free the hot tub from its steel mesh cage. It was obvious to me that the jaunty angle with which it sat in relation to the back wall of the house had to be corrected. This simple act was the first step in my new design that would bring order to a previously disordered space. The hot tub, which would remain a large visual feature in the garden, now sat comfortably and, importantly for this space, parallel with the rear wall of the house. The use of hard landscaping in any garden project has to be considered carefully, and for this garden it would comprise a simple layout of pathways which were functional but also, because of the careful selection of the material used, contributed to the overall aesthetics of the space. A rainbow sandstone was chosen for the pathways and the outdoor dining area, as highlights in the stone would beautifully complement the red tones of the decking. A sun deck would be created next to the hot tub, and I decided that this would be circular in form to help soften the rigidity of the straight lines that dominated the space; again the choice of material was important to accommodate the client’s wishes for a high quality product. I used red hardwood decking, responsibly obtained from certified sustainable resources. One question remained. I wanted to incorporate some gravelled areas for textural and visual effect, but I had to keep in mind the client’s wishes for being able to walk around in bare feet. This meant that both gravel and chippings were out, as some are jagged and sharp. My next consideration was pebbles and after a very long search I managed to source some water worn, completely smooth, small pink river pebbles from Japan. Whilst these were expensive, they fitted in beautifully with the design scheme and again complied with the client’s wishes for a quality product in every way. The pink colour of the pebbles toned marvellously with the sandstone and decking, completing a warm and comforting colour palette to the hard landscaping that would complement the evergreen planting scheme. The client’s wish for low maintenance led me to consider an evergreen planting scheme. This would allow the family to use the garden at all times of the year, weather permitting. After discussion with the client we decided to create a leafy, lush, evergreen tropical feel to the plantings. The longest boundary wall was visually dominant and it was obvious to me that plantings had to be used to break the line of this wall and, of course, to reduce its visual impact in the garden. The result of this would be that the wall itself would become secondary to the plantings and both the visual and physical presence of the wall would be reduced significantly. The planting scheme was now undertaken, in which I used a mixture of mature specimens, semi-mature specimens, and younger plants that would take some more time to grow. This allowed us to create a garden that looked as though it had been established for some time and had not just been newly planted. I hope that you agree that the finished product shows what can be achieved through good design, careful choice of materials, and I think, inspirational planting.

and Gardens Artist in Residence

S

ince the 18th and 19th Centuries, the views of England’s royal palaces and grandest estates have been captured by artists, professional and amateur alike. The aristocrats of the day liked to have a painter capture the picturesque views, sweeping vistas or exotic horticultural specimens to share amongst family and friends. Watercolours, such as those by Paul Sanby, illustrate the informality of daily life at Windsor Castle. Today photography dominates but an echo to the gentler times of previous centuries is underway at Woburn Abbey where artist Richard Hoare has created a soulful series of ink drawings entitled Trees and Reflections. Richard’s relationship with Woburn Abbey started when he was approached by Heritage Site Consultant Lucy Johnson who was creating the role of Artist in Residence at Woburn Abbey as a legacy project. She knew Richard’s work through her Gallery dealing in Modern British Art and felt that his sensibility to light and the landscape would capture the beauty and sensuality of the gardens and park in his monochrome ink drawings. She introduced him to the Duke and Duchess and Richard was subsequently appointed as Woburn’s first Artist in Residence in 2014. Not since Edwin Landseer began to visit the Abbey in 1823 had an artist had the opportunity to develop a relationship with the 3000 acre park in such an unhurried and intimate fashion. As Richard said, “I was able to experience the movement of the clock of the sun and progression of the seasons across this majestic setting and to experience it in a profound way.” The images of trees and reflections from pools of water within the park are captured throughout the seasons and now form a standalone exhibition. The 12-month process was punctuated with moments of fate and synchronicity. Three months into his residency Richard discovered that a distant ancestor, Richard Colt Hoare, had been presented with a folio of etchings of Woburn’s trees in 1819 by the 6th Duke. It was an unexpected discovery and reinforced the sense of timelessness and destiny to the project. On another occasion while Richard was painting by the Cone House the Duchess was strolling in the gardens with the Chinese Ambassador after having opened the Chinoiserie exhibition. Richard said of the moment, “At times there is a wonderful breeze of the 19th Century. As I paint in the park, I could be like Landseer – just around the corner – nothing would have changed in the daily life of the park”. The Duchess and Ambassador stopped to chat about Richard’s work and the finished piece, Cone House-Pool, projects a subtle but distinctive Asian feel. When mentioned, Richard says it was unintentional but perhaps shows the subtle and subconscious influences at work when in a moment of inspiration. Richard says of the experience, “The traces and aspirations left by generations of guardians of this place are very present when I am working in the grounds.” Richard Hoare: Trees and Reflections Woburn Abbey and Gardens.

The People’s Person – Raymond Blanc

e were privileged to be invited along to Brasserie Blanc in Beaconsfield, which is run by General Manager, Claudia Reiter, who started her Blanc career in Oxford some 14 years’ ago with Raymond, and she is as in awe of him as he is of her so many years later. Brasserie Blanc was celebrating its first birthday and Raymond was there to greet every table personally in a full house. He decided over 10 years’ ago to open the Beaconsfield restaurant but had to wait for regulations to clear – but in the end it was worth it. He is truly amazed at the reception he and the team have had from the Beaconsfield community, and the support means they are always busy. People know they are receiving top quality, seasonal ingredients as in Le Manoir quality and service but at bistro prices; in Raymond’s words you are only as good as your last meal, and even when you get to Raymond status he never forgets how humble he is. We put to him, “You are always proving yourself even when you have been at the top of your game for over 10 years”. He replied, “If you don’t appreciate and train your team you are nothing; it’s all about the people. Hospitality means people and people give to people. We are here to buy it, peel it, chop it, cook it, serve it, and you decide if we got it right”. We think they have. He continues, “We do believe training is key and we train our staff to believe in themselves and in what they can achieve. We provide the best training ground for young people who work in the restaurants for four days and one day go to college, university, school”, but Raymond believes the best way to learn is with hands-on practical skills in a restaurant. We went with Claudia’s recommendation to eat, and had the special 1st birthday menu consisting of Steamed ‘Cobrey Farms, Herefordshire’ Asparagus, Poached Duck Egg and Lemon Sabayon Foam and my colleague chose the Baked Scottish Queen Scallops from the à la carte menu, then back to the birthday menu for our main course which was the Lamb Rack, locally sourced from Chiltern Farm, Amersham, Dauphinoise Potatoes, with buttered Kale and Carrots served with a Rosemary Jus. The dish was amazing and followed by a ‘Yorkshire’ Rhubarb Crumble, with Vanilla Crème Anglaise …. mmmm delicious! Brasserie Blanc do a set two-course, seasonal menu which changes monthly and has a superb variety of choice from as little as £11.95 at lunchtime and £14.95 in the evening It has been a big learning curve for Raymond along the way, and he has often had to eat humble pie. He still feels it is a joy and a privilege to be where he is, and he shares in the passion of all who work for the brand he has created. He knows he has fallen a lot of times and he believes no matter how often you’re down you should always pick yourself up and carry on, and this is what he instils in his staff too – believe and you will achieve. For relaxation Raymond likes to fish but doesn’t get to do it often. When asked what he would do when he retires he said, “fish”, but from what we realised after spending time with him he will not be retiring anytime soon. If Princess Diana was the people’s princess, we think Raymond is the people’s person. He is never fazed by cooking for anyone, Royalty included, and he has always held a special place in his heart for the Queen Mother.

Atul brings his unique talent to this venture and with inspired Indian cooking with a twist, excellent service and a beautiful setting, what more could you ask for?

was recently lucky enough to dine at Sindhu by Atul Kochhar in the Macdonald Compleat Angler hotel in Marlow, Bucks, where Atul Kochhar, the first chef to win a Michelin Star for Indian cuisine, has introduced an innovative and exotic menu which should impress even the most discerning diner. The view of the weir on the Thames from the intimate dining room is equally impressive. The chef’s recommendation was the taster menu (£48 per person, £78 with pairing wines) but I opted for the à la carte. With so many exciting and varied dishes on offer, deciding what to order proved difficult and time consuming, so the arrival of a tasty selection of poppadoms and chutneys presented in a small wooden box by a very attentive waitress was a delightful diversion. The amuse bouche, a delicate pea samosa with a tamarind sauce, worked beautifully, setting the scene for the delights to come. We chose the house wine, a Sauvignon Blanc, intriguingly named after and chosen by Atul himself, and at £5 a glass was a reasonable and perfect accompaniment to the food. My starter of melt-in-the-mouth tiger prawns in yoghurt and carom seeds was beautifully presented as was my partner’s choice of hand dived seared scallops served with a delicious parsnip purée. My main course of saddle of venison with cardamom, mace and turnip with Rogan Jus was an excellent choice and the delicately flavoured tender lamb shank with its crispy topping of golden onions was a big hit with my partner. We shared a bread basket of plain and peshawari naan and mint paratha and the sag aloo and chana masala, served in small copper saucepans, complemented the main dishes perfectly. After a suitable interval we ordered dessert. My chocolate mousse was encased in a sphere of hard chocolate onto which yet more chocolate, in the form of a hot sauce, was poured. Add to this a trace of passion fruit gel and popping candy and you can see how the taste buds would tingle. If chocolate is not your thing, a delicious alternative is the Bhapa Doi (rose yoghurt cheesecake) served in a glass with raspberries and cream. Coffee, accompanied by petit fours including an unusual cardamom shortbread, rounded off a perfect meal.

Ten WOW Cornish beaches to visit this summer Kynance Cove, Lizard Located on the west side of the Lizard and probably the most photographed and painted location in Cornwall, the contrast between the cove’s white sandy beach and the green serpentine rock is a breathtaking sight. There’s a steep 10 to15-minute walk down to the cove but that doesn’t stop visitors who head to the beach for a family day out, a romantic stroll along the sand or to photograph the moment when in the sunlight on the sea turns a brilliant turquoise colour. At low tide you can explore the towering rocks stacks and the caves with names such as The Parlour and The Drawing Room and located just above the beach is an ecofriendly café selling Cornish pasties, fresh sandwiches, baguettes, homemade cakes and cream teas along with beach goods. From Kynance there is a fantastic two-mile scenic walk around the coast to Lizard Point, mainland UK’s most southerly point.

Fistral beach, Newquay Say the word Fistral to any avid surfer and you can guarantee their eyes will widen in awe. As one of the world’s top surfing destinations, backed by high cliffs and sand dunes, Fistral is the playground for hundreds of enthusiasts who flock to the beach to get a fix of the big waves. All the big UK surf competitions take place here including Boardmasters, the Quicksilver Skins, the UK Pro Surf Tour and the BUSA Championships so if you’re a gung-ho pro or a just a timid beginner, this is the ideal place for you to show off or take your first tentative dip in the ocean. Overlooked by the imposing grandeur of the Headland Hotel, the beach is bookended by two headlands that funnel in powerful, hollow waves which regularly reach heights of between six and eight feet. On shore there are plenty of opportunities to book surf lessons or hire gear and a complex of cafés, takeaways and shops is located on the beach.

The large beach, popular with families, has a stream that flows down one side which is great for kids to paddle in, and up on the cliffs is the internationally renowned Minack Theatre, built in the 1920s by theatrical visionary Rowena Wade and her faithful gardener, which you can visit all year round. Logan Rock, famous for its 80-ton granite rocking stone, is a 30-minute walk away round the bay to the left and the fascinating Porthcurno Telegraph Museum that tells the story of Cornwall’s role in the pioneering days of global communications is located just before you get to the main car park.

Porthminster beach, St Ives This crescent of golden sand, framed by a glittering bay, has glorious views across to Godrevy Lighthouse, inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s famous novel ‘To the Lighthouse’. With the benefit of the mildest climate in the UK along with waving palm trees and translucent waters, there is a definite tropical feel to the place. Located just a short walk from the centre of St Ives, the award-winning Blue Flag beach at Porthminster is a family favourite for safe swimming while onshore you can simply relax in a deck chair or try your skill at the mini 18-hole golf course where you can also order up freshly made juices and smoothies.

Gyllyngvase beach, Falmouth Gylly beach, with its arc of golden sand, boasts sweeping views from Pendennis Castle to the beautiful Lizard Peninsula. The gently sloping white sand also has plenty of rock pools perfect for families.

Watergate Bay, Watergate Watergate Bay beach, about three miles from Newquay on the North Cornwall coast, is a large beach. Two miles of golden sand at low tide stretch towards Newquay and out to sea enormous waves come in from the Atlantic providing a spectacular sight and a popular surfing and kitesurfing spot. It is a large, open bay and frequently picks up swell from the Atlantic and is popular with families and surfers. Watergate Bay is a 15-minute drive from Newquay or a 45-minute walk, however this is a strenuous walk with many hills and valleys. The beach is a European Designated beach and has achieved the highest standard for UK bathing water.

Summerleaze beach, Bude Summerleaze has a unique appeal, not least because it is less than five minutes’ walk from the centre of Bude and the large car park leads directly to the sand dunes. The river, with its bobbing fishing boats, flanks the wide, sandy beach that is sheltered by the impressive breakwater, making the beach particularly popular with families and surfers.

Pentewan beach, St Austell Bay

East Looe beach, Looe A lovely bucket and spade style beach located on south east Cornwall’s tranquil coast. A long-time favourite with holidaymakers, East Looe beach is a perfect location for swimming as the beach gently shelves providing easy access especially for the little ones. The sand is great for castle building and you can promenade along the sea front enjoying an ice cream. Backed by substantial sea defences where you can sit and watch the world go by, behind the beach is the vibrant main town home to cafés, restaurants and shops. From the unusually shaped Banjo Pier next to the beach you can watch the many fishing boats come and go while crabbing is the favoured pastime for kids along the nearby harbour walls. Many boat trips leave from the town to explore the beautiful coastline and Looe Island, a wildlife sanctuary just off Hannafore Point, and there’s even a glass bottom boat from which you can observe the marvels of local marine life.

Harlyn Bay, Padstow Considered one of the best family beaches in Cornwall, Harlyn Bay is a wide and spacious beach of yellow sand and pebbles with plenty of interesting rock pools backed by dunes and situated on the eastern side of Trevose Head, just west of Padstow. With its reputation as one of the safer beaches in the county, the crescent shaped bay is popular with novice surfers who can learn to master the waves with surf schools who run sessions from the beach. There’s a fascinating combination of rocky shoreline, sand, dune and tide pools to explore and the beautiful bay is also an unbeatable location to have a go at sea kayaking. For walkers there are delightful routes from the beach to Mother Ivey’s Bay and Trevose Head. The south east corner of Harlyn village provides the access to the beach next to a stream that flows on to the beach. The remains of an old iron age cemetery were discovered behind the beach below the sand. The cliffs at Trevose Head give superb views towards Pentire Head and Newquay.

Quirky Afternoon Teas in London

Afternoon Tea was introduced in Britain in the early 1840s. Typically, it was enjoyed around 4pm to stave off hunger pangs until the main meal was served at around 8pm. Afternoon Tea as we know it today is usually a small meal of delicate sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, sweet pastries and cakes and for that special occasion is now served with some sort of fizz. Nowadays, Afternoon Tea is usually enjoyed as an occasional treat or to celebrate a special event such as a birthday, or a prewedding or baby shower party with a group of friends. Tourists still think we indulge in the daily tradition of Afternoon Tea therefore most establishments offer it. Some of the more unusual and quirky teas are served in the places listed opposite.

What is Chilfest?

76 the riverside journals

Chilfest is a boutique music festival situated in the beautiful Chiltern hills featuring original live bands from the ’80s. With a capacity of 7,000 people for each day, Chilfest provides festival goers and acts alike with an intimate yet lively atmosphere which enhances the music experience for all involved. The custom-built Chilfest arena comprises a top quality stage and sound rig, a wide variety of food and drink outlets and plenty of toilet facilities, providing all the ingredients for a great weekend of live music. Chilfest 2015 will take place on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 July offering two days of the very best sounds from the 1980s.

The story so far Chilfest is the brain child of Steve Butcher who lives in Tring. As Managing Director of Universal Event Productions (UEP), Steve has provided event staging and rigs for a wide variety of top live events throughout the country, including many music festivals. A keen 80s music lover, Steve first had the idea of bringing live music from original 80s bands to the local area whilst in the garden at a friend’s barbecue one evening and the seed for Chilfest was sown.

The Inaugural Chilfest was staged at Pendley Meadow in Tring in July 2013 and featured a lively pop night on the Friday headlined by Little Mix and a show-stopping line up of stars from the 1980s on the Saturday, including Tony Hadley, Rick Astley, Howard Jones, Midge Ure, Hazel O’Connor and Carol Decker which saw the night sell out to its 7,000 capacity. The quality of the production, which included some of the latest moving light and LED screen technologies, received many accolades and earned Chilfest a nomination in two categories at the 2013 UK Festival Awards.

Q & A with

Do you have any of the same characteristics as Boycie? I hope I’m not like him! I certainly don’t talk like him. People seem to love the character even though he’s such a snob and likes to belittle Del,but he does make me laugh.I think we’ve got the same sense of humour!

John Challis

So is there any talk of doing another Only Fools and Horses? No, I don’t think so. We are all getting a bit old now and, sadly, there are only a few of us left. I think it’s nice to remember it how it was. It wouldn’t be the same trying to replace the origanal characters. I think that’s the general feeling but, having said that, if the right script came along – you never know. Do you have any projects coming up in the pipeline to tell our readers about – more books, and so on? I’ve got lots to do this year with conventions and festivals where I do book signings. There’s another tour in September with my one man show and I’ll be doing panto in Bradford at the end of the year.I’m also writing my third novel as well as a book about my house and garden called Mortimer’s Treasure which will be out next Spring.

By Janine Connolly

You mentioned in a press quote you would like to swap places with Robert De Niro. I was interested to know why that was. He’s a terrific actor from a very good crop. He’s one of those actors you admire. Some of the stuff De Niro has done is absolutely riveting. I was always compared to him. I was doing a play in London and the reviewers said I came over as a low grade Robert De Niro. I don’t know quite what that means – a compliment I suppose.

How did you feel about starring in Benidorm? Did you enjoy it? It was tremendous fun! The writer Derren Litten wrote for my TV series Green Green Grass so he knows how I work and I was grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to create a different character,Monty who’s a dodgy property developer! They are on Series 8 now and it’s strange going in to such a tight knit company, but they all made me feel very welcome and I might even show up there again! What is your favourite character in Only Fools and Horses, apartfrom Boycie and, of course, Duke the dog? (Laughter) Marlene, of course, but they are all great, very popular characters. I used to like Trigger, Roger, who sadly passed away last year – a big shock to us all, but, Denzil was a fascinating character. He remains a good friend you know up till this day, so in the show I do I tend to tell lots of stories about Only Fools… and all the episodes, and so on.

What or who inspired you to become an actor? Well, I couldn’t be anything else really. I started off as an estate agent but that didn’t work. I wasn’t very good at it. I got sacked. At school I enjoyed mimicking people and discovered I was good at it copying people’s voices. I was always being told off by my parents for doing it but it was fascinating for me. I was fascinated by the way people talked and their characteristics. There was someone I knew in the pub that talked like Boycie so that’s how I got into it. This bloke in the pub – it really caught on and 34 years’ later people are still talking about it. Your autobiography Being Boycie was it difficult to see your life mapped out in print? Was it quite easy to put it onto paper? I enjoyed doing it. I talked about some difficult times in my life as well as all the wonderful shows I have done and it was quite difficult confronting some of those aspects of my life – the relationship with my father and so on. I suddenly thought why I had become an actor. I knew I had a talent for it, to be somebody else, and it seemed very odd, but the most natural thing to do. I suppose I was escaping from something, somewhere. Also I was showing off. I like being up on stage so I can be lots of different people.

Taking it away from TV, I notice you are an Ambassador for ‘Visit Herefordshire’. Is this a passion of yours, having moved to your property in the country? Yes, I moved to Herefordshire about 18 years ago with my wife after living in London for 35-40 years. It really was a change. I just felt I needed some space. I liked the history of this place. I wanted to create a lovely garden and that’s what we did, I wish more people would look after this special piece of country. It’s virtually unspoilt and yet the planners are determined to ruin the look of the place with wind turbines and solar panel farms. They are destroying the very views that attract visitors from all over the world. To finish off, John, for me and the girls in the office I can’t let you go without asking you to do your famous quote and terrific voice of Boycie. John answers in character, Come on, Marlene, we are leaving. Get your coat! John, it has been a pleasure talking to you. Good luck with your future plans.

Being Boycie is available from www.wigmorebooks.com

How do you feel about this amazing character that you play, Boycie? Has it restricted you from taking any serious roles? I do a lot of other things.Last year I played Jacques in Shakespeare’s As You Like It at the Ludlow and Stafford Arts Festivals and while I was rehearsing that I was flying out to Spain to film two episodes of Benidorm!

What would be your favourite episode of all time? I think the one where you find out what Boycie’s first name is. When we play our scene in a room above the Nag’s Head. I think Del Boy wants to revisit his mum and this character comes up and asks for someone called Aubrey and Boycie says, “I am here” so he knows his first name suddenly. I think it’s a wonderful piece of writing.

So, who would be your ideal dinner guest? Would he be one of them? Oh, yes. He would be. I’m a big sports fan as well. I would like to have a couple of sporting heroes along but he would certainly be one of them. I would like to know how they tick and so on. He’s a very interesting guy.

T

he University of Westminster will re-open its historic Regent Street Cinema to the public in May 2015 after a three-year renovation. Situated in the heart of London’s West End, the University of Westminster’s Regent Street Cinema is where the first-ever performance of moving images took place. Created by the Lumière brothers, this was shown to a paying British audience in 1896, paving the way for a century of cinematographic innovation. In 1980, Regent Street Cinema was turned into a student lecture hall and hasn’t been open to the public since. The reinstated Regent Street Cinema and state-of-the-art auditorium will offer the best repertory programming, serving as a unique arts venue for quality world cinema as well as lectures, screenings, workshops and events. Above all, the cinema will bring together students and industry professionals, nurturing future talent and providing a platform for University of Westminster’s outstanding film students and faculty members to showcase their award-winning work. The University of Westminster launched a major campaign in 2012 to restore one of the most important cinemas in Britain to its former glory, reinforcing the University’s position as a leading global centre for excellence in the arts and film production. The Quintin Hogg Trust donated £1m to the University’s campaign, followed by a £1.5m Heritage Lottery Fund grant, which helped in meeting the £6.1m target. Further fundraising has been supported through the ‘Name a Seat’ donor campaign complete with a personalised plaque on the selected seat(s) in the cinema.

A Guide to Fulham by Nina Koo-Seen-Lin

Fulham is situated on a great loop of the River Thames, in between Chelsea and Putney. This lively area in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham has plenty of charm and its great atmosphere has attracted a sociable crowd of young professionals and families.

86 the riverside journals

It was once home to the Bishop of London and a predominantly working class area, but over the centuries this part of London has now become an affluent neighbourhood.

From first-rate restaurants and posh, organic markets to extravagant green spaces and a premier soccer institution, there’s plenty to see and do in south-west London’s attractive neighbourhood. Discover what the area has to offer.

Fulham Palace

Things to do Shopping Fulham has plenty of amenities. On New Kings Road and Fulham Road there are a variety of shops, including high-end fashion boutiques and independent stores. There’s a weekend market on North End Road which sells fresh, seasonal produce at reasonable prices.

Parks Fulham has more than its fair share of green, open spaces. Bishops Park, Fulham Palace Gardens, and Parsons Green all provide a glimpse of Fulham’s natural side.

Entertainment The Troubadour is a bohemian café which has played host to some of the biggest musical talents in the 20th and 21st centuries. Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Adele all made a name for themselves on the small downstairs stage. Upstairs there’s a café area and art gallery. (263-267 Old Brompton Road, London, Kensington & Chelsea SW5 9JA)

Top attractions Hurlingham Park Sports enthusiasts should take advantage of the various recreational facilities in this park. As well as football and rugby pitches there are tennis and netball courts. During the summer there’s polo in the park. The three-day event brings together a spectacular international polo event and family entertainment.

Fulham Palace The historic home of the Bishops of London until the early 1970s, this historic building is open to the public. There are exhibitions, historical tours around the palace and guided walks around the landscaped gardens. The palace also has a café in the former drawing room. (Bishop’s Avenue, London SW6 6EA)

Fulham FC and Chelsea FC Both football clubs are located within the Fulham area. Fulham Football Club is at Craven Cottage while Chelsea Football Club is in nearby Stamford Bridge. (Fulham FC: Craven Cottage, Stevenage Road, London SW6 6HH. Chelsea FC: Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, London SW6 1HS)

A night out in Fulham

Breakfast

The themed nightclub

River Café in Fulham (not to be confused with the one in Hammersmith) is an old-fashioned British teashop with an extensive all-day breakfast menu. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable (ranging between £3 and £5). Diners can opt to mix and match their choices. As well as meat there are a variety of vegetarian options. (1A Station Approach, Fulham, London SW6 3UH)

Maggie’s is a 1980s-themed nightclub. Its interior pays the ultimate tribute to the iron lady. Framed photos of her adorn the walls and instead of the usual bathroom music, loogoers are treated to audiobook extracts from Thatcher’s diaries. The dance music is full on 80s playlist and visitors are encouraged to fill the colour-changing dance floor. (329 Fulham Road, London SW10 9QL)

Lunch

The cocktail bar

Megan’s Deli and Restaurant is a Mediterranean delicatessen that serves grilled meats and vegetables as well as cakes, pastries, salads and quiches. There’s a garden seating area that’s lovely to sit in during the spring and summer months. The food is home-cooked using seasonal ingredients. During the evening, the deli serves a range of cocktails. (571 King’s Road, London SW6 2EB)

Kona Kai is a Polynesian inspired cocktail lounge and club. The tiki themed bar serves Hawaiian style cocktails with ingredients such as light and dark rum, flavoured syrups, and tropical fruit juices. There’s also a classic cocktail menu with the usual concoctions to choose from, including mojitos, pina coladas, and daiquiris. Kona Kai is also a party venue and it’s available for private bookings. Entertainment includes hula dancing and resident DJs. (515 Fulham Road, London SW6 1HD)

Dinner Claude’s Kitchen is a British fine dining restaurant located above the Amuse Bouche champagne bar in Parsons Green. The weeklychanging menu is short with a few starters, mains and desserts to choose from. The wine list is carefully selected and staff are happy to recommend the perfect bottle to accompany your chosen meal. (51 Parsons Green Lane, London SW6 4JA)

The champagne bar Amuse Bouche has over 40 champagnes on offer, some of which are reasonably priced. A glass of the house champagne is only £5, proving that the luxury aperitif doesn’t have to be expensive. (1 Parsons Green Lane, London SW6 4JA)

Top drinking establishments The wine bar Vagabond Wines is an independent wine shop and enoteca that offers wine tasting evenings. There are 100 wines to choose from and a menu of sharing platters and small nibbles. Special events are held each month that focus on wines from different regions and wine workshops. Damned Diamonds

92 the riverside journals

Behind every piece of jewellery is a story but it seems that if you steal a diamond and it originated from India your tale won’t have a happy ending.

Take a look at three of the world’s most famous cursed diamonds, all from the east.

The scandal of the loot continues The platinum crown, which was worn by the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother for the 1937 coronation and laid atop her coffin during her funeral, attracts millions of visitors to The Tower of London where it is kept with the crown jewels. There is one particular stone set in the top of the crown that is at the centre of a row that has been simmering between Britain and India for years. The Koh-i-Noor diamond, or Mountain of Light as it is otherwise known, is a seriously valuable piece of war booty, which was presented to Queen Victoria in 1851 by the subjugated Indian leader. Now the Indians want it back but Britain is sticking to its guns and refusing to return the 106 carat rock. This is just the latest scandal in the diamond’s 5,000 year history. A curse that dates back to 1306 damns all men who own it to bring about their own destruction. It states, ‘he who owns this diamond will own the world but will also know all its misfortunes. Only God or a woman, can wear it with impunity’. The first man to fall foul of the curse was the Mughal Emperor Babur who was driven to exile, then came Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal. He was imprisoned by his son. There were some bitter wars and battles following this time and after each the victor would take power and the Koh-i-Noor diamond. It has been in Afghanistan and Persia but no matter where it was those who owned the diamond lost their power and came to bloody, unfortunate ends.

There was no hope for anyone

Below: Black Orlov Diamond Opposite page: Hope Diamond

Dark and depressing ends Rumour has it that three former owners of the Black Orlov diamond have committed suicide, the results of a curse that goes back to India. Legend has it that the original 195-carat diamond was cursed after it was stolen by a monk from a sacred temple in India. It was thought to be taken from a statue of Hindu god Brahma where it featured as an eye, hence its current nickname Eye of Brahma. Believed to have been discovered in the early 1900s, the stone, which is now 67.5 carats, was taken to the US in 1932 by dealer J W Paris. The story goes that he jumped to his death from a New York skyscraper. It is said that two Russian Princesses, Leonila Galitsine-Bariatinsky and Nadia Vygin-Orlov, who owned the diamond during the 1940s also killed themselves by jumping to their deaths. These stories have never been substantiated but they certainly follow the diamond wherever it goes.

93 the riverside journals

Above: The Platinum Crown

Truth be told, most people will recognise the Hope Diamond from the dazzling necklace draped around the body of a naked Kate Winslet in the movie Titanic. That story of the necklace being on the tragic ship when it sank is pure fiction. In fact, the real life tale of the 45.52 carat blue diamond, which was named after British banker Henry Philip Hope, is equally if not more dramatic. First of all it is thought to come from the Kollur mine – the same mine that bore the mysterious Koh-i-Noor diamond – but, unlike the Mountain of Light, The Hope Diamond bestows a curse on all of its owners. The story goes that John Baptiste Tavernier stole it from an Indian temple and sold it to Louis XIV. People say many years later the diamond seller was torn apart by Russian hounds. Louis XIV died a painful death aged 77. After the reign of Louis XV, who died unloved by his people, the precious jewel was worn by wife of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and we all know how the French revolutionists punished her for her extravagance and greed during her reign. Another famous former owner was the US socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean. She owned The Washington Post, was disgustingly rich and threw lavish parties at the height of her life but it was later plagued with unhappiness when her nine-year-old son died, her husband died in a mental hospital, her daughter died of a drug overdose and the newspaper went bankrupt. Nowadays, the diamond resides in The Smithsonian Institute in America. Unfortunately, the postman who delivered it there, James Todd, was hit by a truck and survived but following that near miss his wife died and his house burnt down.

This year, Prince Harry’s charity for Lesotho’s vulnerable children is creating a show garden, Sentebale – Hope in Vulnerability. Designed by Matt Keightley of Maidenhead landscaping firm Rosebank, it will raise awareness of the charity and give a vibrant flavour of southern Africa, including a rock/waterscape feature, typical of the mountainous terrain. Other highlights include the L’Occitane garden, recreating Provençal hillsides with an aromatic planting of osmanthus, iris, bergamot, lavender and thyme for the Grasse perfume industry. Meanwhile the Cloudy Bay garden, a garden for wine-lovers, is the creation of the youngest-ever Chelsea duo, brothers Harry and David Rich (24 and 27).

Once again Jules Holland with his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra gets the annual festival of midsummer evening concerts off to a great start. With the Palace providing an intimate and fantastic backdrop to every show, there’s something for all tastes: Alfie Boe, Peter André, Burt Bacharach, Paloma Faith, the John Wilson Orchestra celebrating MGM film musicals, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a classical gala with fireworks – and even a double-bill of comedy with Alan Davies and Paul Merton’s Impro Chums. Focusing on style, design and quality, the fair celebrates independent boutiques and trend-setting designer makers as well as prestigious UK brands. Workshops range from making canapés and desserts to the ever-popular flower arranging sessions with Phil Hammond, chief florist at The Dorchester. Tickets include entry to the House event for inspiring interiors, design and decoration (17-20 June) and the Olympia International Art & Antiques Fair (18-20 June).

Following Henley Royal Regatta week, this annual black tie event in a magical setting is a celebration that takes over the whole town. At its heart is a fabulous floating stage on the river, showcasing international names in music and comedy. Then there’s a nightly riverside fireworks spectacular, art, sculpture, street theatre, dance, celebrity chefs, pleasure boats, glamping... Evening concert highlights this year include Jessie J, Lionel Richie, the Gipsy Kings, and Who Got Rhythm?! a Gershwin celebration performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra. New this time for children, there’s a theatre show, comedy and musical entertainment for age four upwards.

Chilfest Friday 10-Saturday 11 July Tring, Hertfordshire After fear of closure last year, this niche Eighties festival out in the Chilterns has attracted international performers in just its third staging. Sister Sledge – famed for We Are Family – will headline an exciting disco-funk Friday line-up. They will be joined by Shakatak, Shalamar, Jocelyn Brown and Odyssey. Topping the bill on Saturday is all-round entertainer and Grammy Award-winning singer Billy Ocean. Other acts in the rural setting include ABC – one of the bands who kick-started the Eighties with their own brand of pop and continued to evolve – Bad Manners, Limahl, Blow Monkeys, the Real Thing and Sonia.

HORSES, heritage, hats and hospitality – racing has enjoyed royal patronage since the days of James I, and we Brits simply love the big race days in what is the UK’s largest spectator sport after football. While six million punters go racing each year, it’s the premier events that capture the imagination of people from all walks of life. What’s not to like about dressing up, socialising and having a little flutter as you relish the buzz of the action?

Newmarket

Newbury

Epsom

So, under starters’ orders, we’ll begin with the prestigious QIPCO Guineas Festival at the home of flat racing, historic Newmarket where the early May bank holiday weekend on 2 and 3 May will see the Suffolk town take on an electric atmosphere. Europe’s finest horses will be on show, looking to impress over a mile in the year’s opening two Classic races for Group One three-year-olds: the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas for fillies on Saturday, followed on Sunday by the fabulous QIPCO 2,000 Guineas. Previously won by the great Frankel, the 2,000 Guineas is dubbed “The Greatest Show on Turf”, and lays foundations for the rest of the flat racing season. Beloved of James I and Charles II, Newmarket’s first recorded race was staged in 1622, and there are now more racehorses, trainers, stud farms and racing organisations in this area than anywhere else in the world. The Rowley Mile course was instigated by Charles II so he could avoid the low sun getting into his eyes when racing on the other track (the July course) in early spring and late summer. From 9-11 July, the July course will come into its own with the Moët & Chandon July Festival. This is East Anglia’s most stylish summer event, with stunning hats to be seen everywhere. Newmarket Racecourse, Suffolk, 01638 675500, newmarket.thejockeyclub.co.uk

We move on to Newbury for the next highlight of the flat season, the Al Shaqab Lockinge Day. This year’s race day on 16 May will be the richest in the Berkshire course’s 110-year history. Centred around the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes being run for £350,000 for the first time, there is now an outstanding seven-race card worth a total of £750,000 thanks to a new five-year sponsorship deal with Al Shaqab Racing. Some of Europe’s finest thoroughbreds go head-to-head in the feature race, which last year was won by Olympic Glory, registering the third of his four career Group One victories. Newbury is known as a fair track, being quite flat with a wide sweeping bend and a long straight. Many top trainers like to run promising horses here since it’s rare that a horse gets into trouble or has bad luck. Just 10 minutes from the M4, it’s a topclass dual flat and National Hunt (jumps) track that runs some 30 races throughout the year, and is currently undergoing a multi-million pound redevelopment. Jumping starts in the autumn with the bet365 Festival, including the prestigious Hennessy Gold Cup on 28 November. Newbury Racecourse, Berkshire, 01635 40015; newburyracecourse.co.uk

It’s time to start competing in the summer fashion and millinery stakes at the Investec Derby Festival on 5 and 6 June at Epsom Downs. Blending a party atmosphere with exciting racing, the event features the next two Classics of the year, this time over a mile-and-a-half. Ladies’ Day on Friday sees the running of the Investec Oaks for fillies, followed on Saturday by what is widely regarded as the greatest flat race in the world – the famous Investec Derby with huge winnings of £1.25m. Past Derby winners include legendary horses such as Seabird, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Shergar, Galileo and last year’s hero Australia ridden by Joseph O’Brien who were roared home by a crowd of more than 100,000. Traditionally known as “London’s Big Day Out”, the Epsom Derby has always attracted a lively mix of racegoers including royalty and celebrities to enjoy spectacular sporting action as well as a fine addition to their social calendar. While Epsom’s earliest race days were in the 1640s, the festival goes back to 1779 when the 12th Earl of Derby organised a fillies’ race for himself and his friends to compete in. He named it the Oaks after his Carshalton estate and it was so successful that another new race for both colts and fillies was planned for the following year – the Derby Stakes. A day at the races Goodwood

Now to the pinnacle of the social season and Britain’s most valuable race meeting, glamorous Royal Ascot which this year takes place on 16-20 June. It includes eight Group One races and showcases the best racehorses in the world competing for more than £5.5million in prize money. With the champagne and Pimm’s flowing, it’s all a heady mix as magnificent racing combines with pageantry and high style – especially for the prestigious Gold Cup on Ladies’ Day (Thursday). This is Britain’s most important event for stayers (horses that run over long distances). Open to four-year-olds and over, it is a distance of two miles and four furlongs. Ascot’s royal connection goes back to Queen Anne in 1711. She realised that the unbroken stretch of rich green turf at what was known as East Cote, just five miles across the countryside from the royal stables at Windsor Castle, would be the perfect place to gallop. Our present Queen hasn’t missed a meeting since 1945 when she first attended with her parents, aged 19. No other engagement is allowed to take precedence, and two years ago racegoers shared her excitement as she watched her horse Estimate triumph in the coveted Gold Cup. Ascot Racecourse, West Berkshire, 0844 346 3000; ascot.co.uk

“Glorious Goodwood”, 28 July-1 August, offers another opportunity for a wonderful quintessentially English day out. Set high on the slopes of the Sussex Downs outside Chichester, it’s the perfect setting to enjoy top class racing with friends, family or clients. More than 100,000 people flock through the gates during the showpiece five-day Qatar Goodwood Festival to enjoy its chic yet relaxed atmosphere which has all the glamour but none of the formality of a great occasion. The racecourse is the jewel in the crown of one of Britain’s stately homes, the Goodwood Estate. Launched as a track for local officers by the third Duke of Richmond in 1802, the fivefurlong straight course is one of the fastest in the country, so speed from the gate is essential as well as the ability to maintain balance downhill. Feature races are two Group One British Champions Series events: the Qatar Sussex Stakes and the £600,000 Qatar Nassau Stakes. Another highlight is the celebrity ladies’ race for the Magnolia Cup, won last year by the supermodel and Ladies’ Day Ambassador Edie Campbell. Goodwood Racecourse, West Sussex, 01243 755000: goodwood.com/horse-racing

Racecourses nowadays cater for everyone, with various additional entertainments, food and drink venues and even family enclosures. Each has its own character, and all will give you a thrilling experience. Tips for new racegoers 1. Check out the dress code for the racecourse. 2. Buy an official racecard at the course on the day. You’ll find all the runners plus features and tips. Note the feature race, often obvious by the size of the prize fund. 3. Arrive early, soak up the atmosphere and take a look at the horses in the paddock ring. Savour the excitement as jockeys, trainers and owners prepare for the race ahead. 4. Don’t lose too much cash! You can bet with a bookie or on the Tote. Choose a horse with a bright eye, shiny coat, pep in his step but a calm demeanour. 5. Enjoy yourself, experience everything, do what you want to do – have fun! 6. For the basics about racing visit racingexplained.co.uk

f you like your top level grass court tennis played in a relaxed, intimate atmosphere, in stunning surroundings whilst sipping a glass or two of Veuve Clicquot champagne, then The Boodles is definitely the tournament for you. This year’s tournament takes place at Stoke Park on 23rd-27th June 2015, the week before the Championships begin at Wimbledon. The Boodles is now in its 14th year and has become one of the sporting highlights of the English summer social season. While it prides itself on sumptuous hospitality and keeping the bubbly flowing between matches, it is also a fantastic event for tennis fans. Its 1900-seater centre court, with each seat no further than 10 metres from the playing surface, creates a very relaxed, yet charged atmosphere which the players enjoy and relish as much as those who come to watch. The player field is yet to be decided for 2015, but you can expect a stellar line-up if past years are anything to go by. Novak Djokovic has been a regular visitor, with other past players including Andy Murray, Grigor Dimitrov, Tomas Berdych, Marin Cilic, Stan Wawrinka, John Isner, Ernests Gulbis and Fernando Verdasco.

After school options

What’s the right path for your child after they leave school? 114 the riverside journals

If your child is in their final year of secondary school or college, it’s time for them to start thinking about what they want to do next. Here’s a guide to helping your son or daughter make the right choice for them.

School leavers aged 16

School leavers aged 18

AS & A Levels

Apprenticeship

Why it’s a good option: A Levels are regarded highly by universities and what grade your child gets determines what UCAS points they get and ultimately what university he/she goes to. Learning process and outcome: A levels focus on the usual academic subjects your child will have studied at GCSE level, but some additional subjects are also offered, including Law and Psychology. For more information: Contact your child’s school for further details.

Why it’s a good option: Some may find it more beneficial to work on their skills in certain subjects within some sort of placement. There are a number of organisations that offer apprenticeships. Some of the UK’s biggest companies offer trainee schemes, including Barclays, KPMG and John Lewis. Learning process and outcome: By doing an apprenticeship, your child will learn on the job and receive a regular pay packet. For more information: www.gov.uk/further-education-skills/apprenticeships

Why it’s a good option: Children between 14–19 years can take a diploma. They’re a good option if your child has an idea of what area they’d like to work in. Learning process and outcome: There are a range of subjects to choose from, including Business, Administration and Finance, Creative and Media, Engineering, and Travel and Tourism. For more information: Contact your child’s school or visit yp.direct.gov.uk/14-19prospectus/

International Baccalaureate Why it’s a good option: The IB is very wellrespected by universities. If your child is hoping to study abroad then an IB is a good qualification to pursue. It’s become more widely available across the UK at independent schools and some state schools. Learning process and outcome: IB students are assessed on tasks completed in school and take written exams at the end of the programme, after which students are awarded with an IB Diploma. For more information: www.ibo.org

NVQs and BTECs Why it’s a good option: NVQs are especially designed for those who know what job they want to pursue, and gain immediate experience in the working world. Those who aren’t 100% sure about what career they want to follow, but want to learn on the job, should consider taking a BTEC. Learning process and outcome: There are over 1000 subjects to choose from, including plumbing, hairdressing, catering and IT. Students receive a mixture of training and assessment. Both NVQs and BTECs are designed to lead students to either a job or further study. For more information: http://www.qcda.gov.uk/ default.aspx

University Why it’s a good option: Employers value a university degree highly. A good qualification (2:1 or above) and evidence of experience will help your child in their endeavour to start their career. Learning process and outcome: Courses are taught through a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Students are assessed either by coursework and/ or practical work. Most courses last for three years and require students to complete a 10,000 word dissertation in their third year. For more information: https://www.ucas.com

Gap Year Why it’s a good option: A gap year allows your child to think about what they’d like to achieve in life – whether returning to education or pursuing a different route is best for them. Gap years also look good on CVs if during the time something positive has been achieved. Learning process and outcome: There are a number of things your child can do, including travelling, volunteering, and skills training. Some people decide to stay at home and work to save up money for their future pursuits. For more information: http://www.gapyear.com and/or http://www.oysterworldwide.com

Would you recognise the signs of depression?

D

epression, along with mixed anxiety, counts as the most common mental health diagnosis in the United Kingdom today. In addition, the number of people living with depression on a daily basis is steadily on the rise, increasing by almost one half million between 2009 and 2012. Today it is estimated that as many as one in five adults in the UK will experience depression or anxiety in their lifetime. Reasons People Avoid Discussing Depression However, this is really just the tip of the iceberg as many as twothirds of the people with symptoms of depression fail to seek help from their GP. This is often due to the belief that it is a normal feeling of sadness that will pass, that the only treatment available is the use of antidepressant medications and that depression and mental health issues are somehow embarrassing and show weakness. Changes and Symptoms to Watch For One of the most important reasons that people have difficulty in talking about the symptoms of depression is often that they are not seen as symptoms. Instead, people may attribute the changes in their physical and mental state to other health conditions or changes in the world around them over which they have no control. The symptoms of depression from a personal view include:

in getting asleep, staying asleep or extreme • Difficulties difficulty in getting up and about in the morning with concentration and in making decisions, • Difficulty plans or goals of helplessness, hopelessness or that life is no • Feelings longer within your control that seemed easy in the past are now very difficult • Things and things that brought enjoyment no longer provide those positive emotions

Many people that have sought help and treatment for depression describe the time before treatment as bleak, black and empty of positive emotions. They also report feeling more aggressive, agitated and irritable even with those trying to help. Physical issues such as frequent aches and pain, colds and flues, headaches, back pains and digestive disorders are also common physical symptoms of depression. If you believe you are experiencing the symptoms of depression, talk to your doctor or seek the help of a therapist, counsellor or qualified mental health provider. Treatments today are highly effective in addressing the medical and emotional issues of depression and helping you to get back to living your life and enjoying the world around you.

Walking on Clouds with Marion Yau at the Harley Medical Foot & Nail Clinic

M

eeting podiatry specialist, Marion Yau, for the first time was like greeting an old friend; immediately her warmth and enthusiasm, blended with her obvious passion and professionalism, meant that I instantly felt relaxed enough to get down to the business of discussing the technicalities of toes and fetid feet and how best to treat them! Our feet are very hard working and are often neglected but a little maintenance and TLC will keep them walking, and working, for you for years to come. Marion recommends treating our feet to a good moisturizer every day – in her view we should spend more time on our feet than our face! And I guess she would say that, but actually she does have a point! Our feet do have to take a lot of stress:

A human foot and ankle is a complex mechanical device containing 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. A native of Vancouver, Canada, Marion came to the UK to study Podiatric Medicine in 2004, gaining an honours degree before going on to achieve a distinction with her masters and, most recently, completing a doctorate in the treatment of fungal nail infections. In between she met and married her GP partner and has been treating podiatry clients in London’s medical mecca, Harley Street, for the past five years. Marion is frequently invited to share her podiatry expertise on the international medical stage and continues with her personal professional development conducting cutting edge research and clinical trials into fungal nail problems. When I asked Marion what her specialty was, she replied: “I just love helping my clients have healthy feet, and when it comes to feet, I’m pretty good at everything!” When she shared with me some of her cases, it became very obvious that this was not false modesty! Her client list is pretty impressive too… She has treated Olympic athletes, polar explorers, MP’s, Grammy award winners, stars of stage and screen, as well as regular mere mortals – and, having met Marion, I know that each and every one of her clients gets the superstar treatment.

Mention this article and get 10% discount on all first consultation appointments booked with Marion Yau at the Harley Medical Foot & Nail Clinic, 1-7 Harley Street, London W1G 9PZ www.footcliniclondon.co.uk info@footcliniclondon.co.uk 020 3150 1655

Using her specialist knowledge, Marion has developed a unique M.Y PediPolish pedicure treatment for clients using her personally created fabulous nail polish (M.Y Naturally Enriched Nail Polish) designed to treat and protect the nails with anti fungal and anti microbial extracts and vitamins. As she says herself, “I love my job and have a great passion for the work that I do. For each of my clients I devise an individual care plan that will give them the best possible care and outcome.” Her passion for podiatry and her skill at bringing relief to some seriously scary feet is very impressive. She told me that often her clients come to her after having suffered for years. So whatever your foot problems, or needs – corns, callouses, hard skin, cracked heels, skin/nail infections, warts/verrucae’s, ingrown toe nails, toe nail fungus, cosmetic podiatry, biomechanical assessment, gait analysis, vascular assessment and diabetic foot screenings, foot health checks, or her exclusive M.Y PediPolish pedicure – don’t delay, make an appointment and go see Marion Yau – after treatment with her you will feel like you are walking on clouds! W

e asked Jake Allen, who established his tailoring company in 2003, what makes him get up in the morning. “My goal is to make everyone realise that with us bespoke tailoring is as affordable as off-the-peg yet will fit you perfectly. We make bespoke suits in your choice of cloth and style from as little as £349.” The tailoring outfit that started off visiting city gents has constantly expanded both the ranges they offer and the regions they offer it in, with a new Amersham store that opened last year. “Our ranges encompass a broad choice of prices with one thing in common, whatever your budget you can afford to go bespoke,” says Mr Allen. King & Allen offer three ranges all with a unique pattern cut to your measurements. Their machine-stitched suits, starting at £349, are an introduction to bespoke tailoring and are not that dissimilar to your offthe-peg suit in how it is constructed but it will fit you perfectly. At the top end they have their full canvas range with suits made as they are on Savile Row with a full canvas, hand stitching and a baste fitting (we are told this is a fitting at the halfway stage when the suit is only partially constructed, think James Bond in his hotel room!) but these start at £799 instead of the £4,000 you would spend on Savile Row. Their half canvas range starts at £499 and you can choose from the same Savile Row cloths as the full canvas range. Whichever range you decide King & Allen will make your suits for your wedding or work with the philosophy that the key to a great looking suit is the fit.

www.kingandallen.co.uk

King & Allen were the first tailors to introduce affordable bespoke suits to London and the home counties and now have stores in Amersham, Surbiton and Liverpool Street, London. They offer modern, stylish, bespoke suits in a relaxed and open environment.
