The Colour

Dear Readers Welcome to our sizzling summer edition of the Riverside Journals titles – we hope that you have all been enjoying the early onset of the season. With summer in mind how about that once-in-a-lifetime holiday; we feature travelling in Japan and Vietnam, and on the Japanese theme, award-winning Richard Lucas commends Japanese garden styles. We would like to offer a warm welcome to Sarah Beeny who gives some very useful tips on buying and selling a property. We were fortunate to be invited to the Sofitel London St James hotel, a luxurious 5-Star hotel, and you can read about our experience there. Another of our journalists, Yasemen KamerWhite, has compiled a wholesome guide for us on how easy it is to eat healthily in London’s Notting Hill. The front cover images have been supplied again by the fabulous fashion photographer, Jan Masny. Featuring Jan’s fantastic Aquarium photography– thank you Jan. Talking of fashion we were privileged to be asked to interview designer Paul Costelloe and, with his wealth of experience in the industry, Paul tells us his story and shows us some of his latest collection. With our sporting theme we have highlighted the places to be to watch polo this summer, and introduce the up and coming young British tennis player, Katy Dunne. Finally, Richard Yarrow takes us for a drive in the new Audi TT Roadster, what better way to enjoy a summer outing than with the roof down! Enjoy! Enjoy! Team RedbrookTeam Redbrook

Captivating lingerie

12 the riverside journals

We reveal what men find sexy in a woman so you can use your lingerie to carry it off.

Playfulness It’s not just girls who want to have fun. Guys want to have fun too. A recent study by The University of Zurich found that playfulness was an important characteristic when looking for an ideal mate. The UZH researchers conducted a study with 327 young adults from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The men and women examined a list of 16 characteristics and indicated whether or not they found them desirable in a future long-term partner. Women found a sense of humour more important than men but men found an exciting personality more important than women. Show him your spirited side. Victoria’s Secret Dream Angel range.

Fearlessness There is a lot to be said for having confidence and conquering your fears. The relationship experts at online dating website eHarmony put being fearless in their top 10 list of what men find sexy in women and it has also been proven. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that men found women more attractive when they exuded confidence. Basically, if you believe you are sexy, gorgeous and fabulous, then so will he. Show him your fearless side. Hot pink lace set from Andres Sarda’s Vitoria line.

Youthfulness It is no secret that men love younger women but there is more to it than a possible midlife crisis. There is a science behind what attracts us to the opposite sex and it is all based on reproducing healthy offspring, which is why young looking women are always so desirable. Clear skin, large bright eyes and good energy are indicators of good genes and men’s brains are wired to want those things in their partners. Show him your youthful side. Prima Donna-Twist Lolita pale blue and canary yellow lace trim highwaisted panties and matching under-wire bra.

Easygoing Boyfriends and husbands are constantly telling their women that they prefer them with less make-up; they find them sexy when they go casual and think a laidback vibe more approachable than a high maintenance madam. Cosmetic company St Ives found one in five men that it surveyed wished their partner would tone down the make-up because it put up a barrier. Showing your more natural side is like inviting a man into the secret world of you where he can feel relaxed and at ease in your company. Show him your natural side. Panache Porcelain Elan strapless bra and matching briefs in black.

If you’ve got it, don’t flaunt it because showing everything you have will leave nothing to the imagination. Elegance is the key to sexiness and it is built on having grace and class. It is about giving an idea that there is something more incredible to discover. Use colours and cuts to accentuate your best parts without showing too much. Add glamour with quality materials and whatever you wear hold yourself with perfect poise. Show your elegant side. Greta body by Gilda and Pearl.

I’ve been buying and selling property for over 20 years and recognised that there should be an alternative to having to pay the amount of money we all have always had to pay in fees when you sell simply because there was no other way. When you decide to sell your home, you want to get the best possible price, quickly and with as little stress as possible – without forking out thousands of pounds to do it. I created my online estate agency, Tepilo.com, to do just that. Tepilo is a fantastic solution, we don’t have high street branches or branded cars which means we can offer a top notch service at a massively reduced cost. 24/7 phone support from an incredible team of experienced sale managers and an easy to use website, complete with a database of buyers actively searching for properties across the UK. It really is a no brainer. Sarah Beeny

Over the years we’ve seen everything you can imagine when it comes to people selling their homes. However there are a few universal truths that we believe, if done properly, can make a huge difference to the price you can achieve and the speed of your sale.

First impressions Stand at the front of your home and try to take a dispassionate look at what you are seeing. Paint your front door, replace broken paving slabs, put your rubbish bins out of sight and add greenery wherever possible.

De-Clutter Get rid of piles of paperwork and other items that make the property appear not to have enough storage space but leave interesting books and well-placed ornaments around, these add heart to a home.

Art and photography on display Massively oversized photos of you and your kids all dressed in white lolling around on a white studio rug might warm the cockles of your heart but it doesn’t help buyers to imagine it as their home. Don’t lose everything though.

Clean up Make sure windows are sparkling and letting in as much light as possible. Dirty kitchens and bathrooms are really yucky, even when it’s your own mess, so it’s particularly horrid for someone else – don’t make them feel like they need to don a hazard suit to wash their hands. If it looks like you don’t love your home, how is anyone else going to fall in love with it?

Colour It’s absolutely fine to have colourful interiors but the way to make it work is to look at the colour’s relationship with other colours in the room, i.e. the ceiling, carpet, woodwork and furniture.

Be realistic As a general rule everything has a price. The chances are if you have not had any viewers or had viewers but no offers, you’re probably asking too much money for your property and you may need to consider dropping the price.

Talk to Tepilo We know how important it is for you to get the best possible price for your home, which is why we’ve chosen such a highly qualified and experienced team to deal with your sale. Give us a call on 01702 870878 or visit www.tepilo.com and we will be delighted to help you.

Jan Masny at Gordon Ramsay’s maze Grosvenor Square The collection presented at Gordon Ramsay’s maze showcases three of Jan Masny’s collaborative work series: “Burning Chrome”, “Aquarium” and “Symmetry of Crystal” and demonstrates the inspiring variety of his output.

20 the riverside journals

A Space For Art is pleased to be able to continue their collaboration with maze and to host what we believe will be the pivotal exhibition of the incredible work of Jan Masny. Exhibition will be open from 10th June and prints will be available for sale in limited editions.

G

ordon Ramsay’s maze, in collaboration with A Space For Art, are proud to present the first public exhibition of the work of incredible photographer Jan Masny. Jan Masny is a versatile and dynamic photographer, of both commercial and artistic flare. His oeuvre negotiates different themes from fashion to portrait, from art collaboration to advertising. Masny’s practice is economic and his photographs simple and minimal. The aim is to specifically emphasise their content, be that a product, an artistic collaboration or physical movement. However the artistry of the image is never sacrificed for commerciality, each image promotes a gestural quality inherently dichotomous to the automated mechanical nature of photography. This dichotomy is manifest in Masny’s fascination with polarities and contrasts of meaning, which lends itself to an ability to extract often-unexpected aspects from his subjects, contributing a surprising vigor and depth to his work. Jan Masny began his photographic practice in the studio of Bogdan Axman, Krakow. However he very quickly made the move to London in 2004 and has since cultivated a fruitful and engaging independent career. Masny has enjoyed advertising commissions from the likes of Sony, Virgin records, Illamasqua, The National Theatre and the Science Museum, to name a few, and international editorial spreads in Cosmopolitan, Elle, In Style, Men’s Health, amongst others. He has taken portraits of numerous celebrities including notable international musicians. Masny’s love of photography also commands much of his personal artistic practice, documenting his adventurous pursuits in international travel and mountain climbing. Nina Koo-Seen-Lin falls in love with the country that invented sushi, green Kit Kats and heated toilet seats.

Nihon,aishite iru

I

(Japan, I love you)

can’t remember when I became obsessed with Japan. Somewhere between my first taste of sushi and seeing what a capsule hotel looks like in The Killers’ ‘Read My Mind’ video I suspect. Ask people who have been to Japan and you’re more than likely to hear the phrase, ‘weird and wonderful’. It’s a place you have to experience for yourself. So, this spring, my boyfriend Paul and I travel for 13 hours to check the country out for ourselves.

Tokyo: the large, loud and lively capital

22 the riverside journals

Japan’s capital city is not easy to describe. First impressions leave us feeling excited, but also a little intimidated. The sheer size of Tokyo, as well as the noise it produces is phenomenal. Thousands of people pound the pavements and the street crossings are gargantuan in size. It’s easy to spot the locals from the tourists. Tokyoites seem to know what pace to walk at, are polite enough not to cross the roads at a red light and generally stay out of other people’s way. The city is efficient. Japan as a whole is efficient. Something we come to realise quickly. It seems they’ve thought of everything to make daily living that bit better including speedy trains and heated toilet seats. Our first morning in Tokyo begins at 2:30am. Jetlagged, we drag ourselves out of our hotel in Ginza and groggily make our way to the tuna fish auction at Tsukiji fish market. Alas, when we get there the auction is already full, so we’re left to wander the narrow streets of the outer market in the witching hour. We pass by wholesalers, fishermen and stall workers working by lamplight, or enjoying big bowls of noodles and broth in small eateries before grabbing a sushi breakfast ourselves at Deiwa-Zushi. During the next few days we visit many significant sights including, the Meiji Shrine, Shinjuku Gyoen and the Tokyo Government Metropolitan Office. Akihabara is Tokyo’s ‘electric town’ where you can find all manner of techy gadgets, manga and gaming paraphernalia. We also attend a kabuki theatre show. Due to my insistence that we save money and not rent an English audio headset to listen to while we watch the performance, Paul and I find ourselves in a ‘lost in translation’ moment.

Traditional Kyoto Our next destination is Kyoto. The best way for tourists to travel around Japan is the JR Rail. A one week pass costs around £155. In hindsight, we would get the pass for the whole of our stay as it’s easy to navigate your way around using the JR lines in each city. Kyoto is 320 miles from Tokyo, but the journey via bullet train is only two hours and 18 minutes. Our first night is spent at a ryokan, or traditional Japanese inn, with a hot spring spa, called an onsen. Yumoto Onsen Oharasansou is an hour’s bus ride away from Kyoto station. We’re greeted by the receptionist who kindly asks us to deposit our shoes by the entrance and choose a pair of slippers before showing us our room. We’re each given a yukata, a casual robe or kimono made of cotton, to wear around the inn and even at mealtimes. This is something I and the other ladies staying at the ryokan embrace enthusiastically. All the men, including Paul, do not. The next day, we head back to central Kyoto and discover geisha girls in the Gion district, a number of shrines and traditional teahouses. With little time we limit our shrine visit to Fushimi Inari Taisha, located at the base of a mountain and famous for its thousands of bright red torii gates. Our last activity in Kyoto is a lesson in the art of the Japanese tea ceremony. En, a small teahouse in Gion, is run by English-speaking servers who teach us how to make and serve tea and the importance of ritual in Japanese culture. With the taste of matcha green tea on our tongues we journey on to our next stop: Osaka.

The crazy charms of Osaka Japan’s second largest metropolis is full of charisma. It’s the perfect place to have fun, eat lots, be merry and watch a lot of baseball (Osakans are obsessed with their home team, the Hanshin Tigers). Our first night is spent in a capsule hotel. The Asahiplaza Shinsaibashi Capsule Hotel and Sauna is located in the Chuo Ward. Capsule hotels are normally used by salarymen who are either on business trips, or have stayed out too late and can’t get home. Over the past few years, these hotels have attracted curious tourists and backpackers looking for cheap digs (our one night stay costs a total of £36). Osaka knows how to eat. The city is famous for takoyaki (little round balls of octopus in fried batter) and okonomiyaki (a savoury pancake). We indulge on copious amounts of takoyaki found at numerous street food vendors along the Dotonburi in the Namba district. Our favourite joint is Tako Tako King, a blues and jazz bar run by energetic chefs and bar staff. We reluctantly leave Osaka but promise to come back to eat more, enjoy life and maybe get into baseball (to see what all the fuss is about).

The reluctant return

23 the riverside journals

Our last days in Japan are spent back in Tokyo. We buy clothes from Uniqlo, pens from Muji and matcha green tea Kit Kats from a bargain store named Don Quijote. With our heavy luggage and even heavier hearts we return to England. We vow to return – in early summer or autumn – in a couple of years. We may have left Japan in body, but a piece of our souls remains firmly there. If you’ve ever wondered about Japan or thought about visiting, there’s only one piece of advice: go. It really is a weird and wonderful place.

langoed Hall is a true country house hotel; when you arrive there is no reception desk, just friendly and professional staff to look after you. The spacious reception rooms are full of antiques, complemented by a superb collection of original 18th and 19th century paintings and drawings including works of art by Edwardian artists Walter Sickert, Augustus John and Rex Whistler. The hall was originally a Jacobean mansion of 1632 – Sir Clough Williams-Ellis redesigned Llangoed Hall in 1912. In the 1980s the hall was bought by Sir Bernard Ashley (husband of Laura Ashley) who rescued the property with the clear vision of creating the ambiance of the Edwardian country house party. Largely as a result of Sir Bernard Ashley’s foresight, much of the house and gardens remain as they were then but enhanced, today, with modern conveniences to provide an idyllic location for holidays, weddings, conferences, afternoon teas, special occasions and any other celebrations. The new owner of this iconic hotel has confirmed his intention to continue the “at home” experience. Calum C Milne was appointed as Managing Director of the Hall and tremendous improvements have been made though the ethos, style and design of the hotel remain exactly the same. Llangoed Hall is a beautiful 23-bedroomed country house that commands magnificent views of the Black Mountains and beyond. A sweeping staircase leads up to the large sumptuously appointed bedrooms, each with its own style, charm and thoughtful extras. A library, complete with window seats and snooker table, adds refinement and, for those with the inclination, a gentle game of croquet is available on a specially designed lawn. Head Chef Nick Brodie’s award-winning cuisine has flair and imagination and only the finest local produce is used to create outstanding gourmet dishes. As a venue, Llangoed Hall offers you bespoke service and guidance through every aspect of planning your special occasion to ensure that it will be a wonderful and memorable experience! Llangoed Hall has recently received such awards as the Sunday Times Country House Hotel of the Year 2014-2015, three AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence 2014-2015, AA Hotel of The Year 2014 Wales, the AA Four Red Star Property 2014, the Condé Nast Johansen’s Restaurant of The Year 2014 for Great Britain & Ireland, Sky Wedding Venue of the Year as well as the Visit Wales Gold Award Winner 2014.

T

he Riverside J were very fortunate to be invited to visit and stay at Sofitel London St James. Sofitel is the only French luxury hotel brand with a presence on five continents with the London St James situated in an excellent position just off Pall Mall and Piccadilly Circus. Positioned in the old Lloyds Bank Building the hotel is quite stunning from both outside and in. This fine establishment is indeed a perfect location for tourists, business travel and leisure breaks and only a 5-minute walk away from many tourist highlights, including Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. While waiting to be checked into our suite, we were shown the Leisure facilities, aptly named So FIT. It consisted of a luxury gym and fitness studio offering state-of-the-art equipment including a multi-sensorial Sha Chair, which has an enclosed section for complete relaxation and invigoration and is very popular with guests after a busy day or a hectic flight. The fitness studio also offers the opportunity of being able to book a Personal Trainer for a Boot Camp training session at one of the many local London parks. We decided to have something to drink before going to our room and were accompanied to a comfortable Gallery seating area overlooking the reception where we ordered afternoon tea and coffee. Our suite was on the third floor and was very stylish with the added benefit of a stunning view towards Pall Mall, with all of the amenities that one would expect in a 5-Star hotel. It was time to enjoy our spa treatment at the So SPA; this leading London spa is set over a three-storey space and is possibly the best reminder that the original design was a bank once owned by Lloyds. We were booked in to have a massage treatment and it was an ‘out of this world’ experience to finish off quite a hectic and stressful working week. After the treatment we opted for the relaxation rooms. As an alternative there is a room with a large table where you can join and mingle with other guests whilst drinking rose tea. Now that we were quite relaxed we were building up an appetite and where better to head for next than The Balcon suite. There are actually three areas to eat in: The Balcon caters for lunches, pre-theatre suppers and intimate aperitifs, as well as dinner in a brasserie-type setting, the St James Bar is more nibbles and small plates and The Rose Lounge is a fabulous place to enjoy a glass of champagne and some nibbles or an afternoon tea with Parisian pastries. We began our dining experience with a cocktail each, we chose a colourful selection, and that put us in the mood for our food and wine. I chose the Braised Suckling Pork Cheek with parsnip purée and horseradish crumble (£7); the combination of flavours really was a treat on the palate! My colleagues chose the Paprika Fried Whitebait with tartare sauce (£5) and the Thermidor twice baked Cheese Soufflé with native lobster and crème fraíche sauce (£11). To complement our mains, we had a bottle of Pinot Noir which went well with the Roasted Oxfordfordshire Lamb Saddle served with seasonal vegetable navarin. This dish was amazing and labelled with a modest cost of £22. I actually opted for the North Sea Cod with mussels, butter beans and saffron cream sauce (£21) and potato fries to share (£3). Our menu choices were delightful and the Head Chef, Vincent Menager, certainly does the restaurants of the hotel proud. Although we were pretty full, we chose two desserts to share between the three of us: French Cheese Plate (£6) and the Floating Island, caramel sauce served in violet sugar (£5). In summary a magnificent, French style, charming hotel in the centre of our buzzing and beautiful capital city. All the staff are courteous and polite, in both French and English, and nothing seemed too much trouble. It truly is deserving of its 5 Stars. I cannot wait to return very soon.

The Chesterfield Mayfair Hotel Gin and Tonic Experience

O

ffered a gin experience and my initial reaction was no thank you I am more of a wine buff, however I would have been so wrong to miss out on this opportunity. Arriving at The Chesterfield Mayfair Hotel, we were greeted by the warm friendly team whose job it is to make sure this is an experience you won’t forget and perhaps make a few converts on the way. Your experience starts with an introduction to your waiter for the day, in our case it was Edgar, the resident mixologist. He explains how this will work: you will choose one of four tasting menus each include three gins based on your preference, his knowledge and expertise help you make the right choice. Who would have known there were so many to choose from and not a Gordon’s in sight. In addition to the gin there is a perfectly matched tonic, and again so many different flavours between them. Choice made, your glass board arrives with 3 x 30ml bottles of Gin surrounded by various herbs and spices used in the distillation process. My first choice, from the Premium Tasting menu (£25), was No.3 London Gin named after 3 St James’s Place where this is made, matched with a Fentiman’s tonic to make for a lovely dry citrus burst of flavour in your mouth. Then followed my personal favourite Martin Miller’s gin and Fever Tree tonic with strawberries and crushed pepper making it a summer delight. Finally, I tried Monkey 47 aptly named as there are 47 different fruits, herbs and spices used in the distillation accompanied by my favourite tonic called 1724 which also has its own story. As you work your way through your chosen gins each one is accompanied with little treats to add to the wow factor – edible flowers, juniper berries and pepper (who would have thought?). Just when you think your experience could not get better the waiter arrives with plates of tasty treats to enjoy. My favourite was the lovely asparagus on a spoon accompanied by salmon. My husband would have loved the baby cheese on toast – shame he was at home missing out on the whole fabulous experience. Throughout our tasting session John, the resident pianist, played some old favourites on the piano adding to the atmosphere. I arrived at the Chesterfield a ‘gin virgin’ and left as a convert and am already looking forward to my next visit. You never know I may even take my husband.

Here’s my wholesome guide on where to go...

Self-sustaining, in that ingredients for their superior dishes served in their smart establishment, along with most of the products in their adjoining store, come from Daylesford’s many acres of well kept, organic farmland. “We have a very good balance for those who want to eat healthily and their partners who want to eat scrambled eggs and bacon”, says Chef Jollan Dsouza. Selling over 150kg of salad per week on their to-go counter, proof is in the pudding. Dsouza recommends the Beef Carpaccio, “it remains on the menu throughout the year, with changing seasonal toppings, nothing is cooked on it, so it’s raw”, I concur – yum! 208-212 Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill, London W11 2RH

or over a decade, Drake’s has retained its Michelin star and it features in the top 100 UK restaurants for the National Restaurant Awards and Sunday Times Food List. Privately owned, Steve and Serina Drake have sympathetically restored it and a stylish blend of contemporary touches complement original oak beams and Georgian features. Drinks can be enjoyed in the oak panelled cocktail bar or pretty walled garden.

There is a range of menus, from the superb value set lunch, through to the six-course or nine-course Flavour Journey or Flavour Discovery tasting menus (also available with matching wines). Guests with varying appetites and time constraints can still enjoy the whole Drake’s experience with the à la carte option of a two, three, four or five-course meal. Steve’s food has an emphasis on flavour and texture. It may seem deceptively simple but, behind the scenes, layers of preparation go into each dish. Menus change seasonally and the lunch menu changes monthly, and equally imaginative vegetarian menus are always available. The eclectic wine list offers yet another voyage of discovery; sommelier Michael Fiducia’s selection embraces small-scale producers (including local English vineyards) with something to suit all tastes and budgets, plus a wide selection of wines by the glass.

There are lots of fun and quirky ways to create an unexpected look or bespoke feature with paint in your home.

Head of Creative, Farrow & Ball

olour, pattern and texture are dominating the world of interior design at the moment and, as a result, people are becoming more and more adventurous with how they use paint in their own homes. From simple crisp stripes on the walls to sophisticated painterly patterns, Farrow & Ball’s absorbing colours and chalky matt paint finishes offer a sophisticated twist on this trend. Layering colour is one of the best ways to create an unusual yet coherent decorating scheme. Simply painting the panelling different shades of grey can create a patchwork effect that can give a neutral space an edge. If you have exposed pipes in your kitchen why not try painting bright Charlotte’s Locks against Churlish Green kitchen walls for an unassuming flash of colour? This is a great technique which turns a rather functional feature into a talking point! Alternatively, try other quick up-dates, such as painting a simple headboard directly onto a bedroom wall, leaving brush strokes visible or painting a bold stripe down a long hallway. We recommend choosing colours that all have the same tonal weight. It’s best to decorate floor by floor, considering the sightlines between rooms – there’s no need for military precision, but it is worth envisioning how colours will complement the adjacent rooms. It can be rather effective to reverse wall and woodwork colours room by room, switching the colour of the walls in the main area to the woodwork colour of the other rooms. This creates a feeling of continuity throughout, and varies drama, as some rooms will be lighter than others, but still feel connected. Wallpaper can also offer the perfect way to create a distinctive look and bring tactility and texture into your scheme. One of the great bonuses of using Farrow & Ball wallpapers is that they are made from our actual paint so you can always find a complementary colour to work in harmony with the design. When working with pattern there are so many options and really nothing to limit your choice. A great tip when using wallpaper in a room is to mix and match patterns with areas of solid colour, this avoids a room feeling overwhelmed and instead creates balance and pulls patterns together. Nothing beats seeing colour in situ; visit our showrooms and stockists where you can browse our painted colour boards to create your own colour schemes and seek expert colour advice. As colours look different in different light, we always recommend testing the colour at home. Paint out a sample pot onto A4 sheets of paper or card. Pin them up and move them around your space, looking at them at different times of the day – this allows you to see the colour in different lights and helps you to decide whether you can happily ‘live’ with the colour. For more information about how to create these looks visit www.farrow-ball.com.

How long have you been in business? I have worked in Interior Design for over 20 years when I first started the company with our showroom in West London.

What motivated you to start this business? I was inspired by the wonders I discovered in my grandmother’s home, which fascinated me as a child. I wanted to create a unique showroom offering a range of accessories for those finishing touches which complete any interior. I sourced beautiful objets from around the world and the business just grew from there.

Can you give a short description of your business? We are an international interior design company working on projects both in the UK and Caribbean. We have two elegant lifestyle showrooms, in Barbados and West London, which showcase a stunning variety of original furniture, accessories and decorative objets including Jenny Blanc own brand furniture designed in-house.

What are you best known for and why?

The fact that we operate at a very high level in the Caribbean and have a showroom there has made us experts in what it takes to create beautiful, enduring designs in a tropical environment. Many of our clients in Barbados are British and find it very convenient to use a UK-based design team with this specialist knowledge.

Why should a customer choose your business? Our experience of working on an extensive range of different projects means that we are very versatile designers. We operate on the basis that we listen to the client and interpret their wishes, as opposed to dictating our own style.

Do you have a lot of repeat business? What keeps customers coming back? Many of our clients come back to us to work on a second, third or fourth home and we develop a close working relationship with them. We have several clients for whom we have designed houses both in the UK and the Caribbean. Clients keep coming back because they appreciate the high level of care and attention that we give to each project, as well as the fact that I am personally involved in all projects.

What regions do you serve and any plans for expansion? We currently serve the UK, Europe and the Caribbean and intend to maintain the high standard of work that we produce in these regions and the specialised knowledge we have built up over time.

What about your business makes you the most proud? I am immensely proud of the variety of prestigious jobs we have worked on around the world; from town houses, country homes and hotels to beautiful, luxury villas in the tropics.

There are some high profile Interior Designers in London and I’m sure Barbados – how do these influence/impact on the sales in your business? Competition is an important part of business, it encourages you to constantly strive to excel and innovate. Design work is never static, it always progresses.

Has the company won any awards in the industry? Yes, we have won seven International Property Awards. In 2012 we won World’s Best Interior Design Private Residence for our restoration of a 15th century lodge in Hertfordshire.

What plans do you have for the future? Whilst maintaining the quality of service and fine-tuning the business, which is a lifelong project, we are taking advantage of our extensive experience by developing our own exclusively designed furniture and Jenny Blanc products online. I also intend to spend more time travelling around the world, discovering beautiful, unique and inspirational designs and objets.

Buying antiques

Follow these top tips when you go shopping for antiques and you won’t go wrong.

Do it for love Do you want the real deal or an antique style piece? Whatever your desire, choose a piece that you genuinely love and believe will fit into your home. Use antique pieces to show individual style in your home and don’t be too worried about profiting on your purchase. The British Antique Dealers’ Association says the media constantly regales us with stories of people finding valuable antiques in their attics or a lucky £5 buy at a car boot sale turning out to be a much more valuable item. These lucky finds are rare and usually happen to people with the expertise to recognise them.

Keep going back If you are looking for something specific it is a good idea to make regular visits to your local antique shops because you never know when that prize piece will turn up. Let dealers know what you like and give them your contact details because they may well be kind enough to alert you when something of your taste comes in.

Visit a fair One of the advantages of making a day of it at an antique fair is that products are usually vetted to make sure they are genuine and accurately described. The Association of Art and Antique Dealers put on a variety of fairs across the country and they vet all of the dealers in attendance. For shoppers who don’t have time to travel far and wide to different stores a fair is a good opportunity to examine a wide variety of antiques and compare prices in one location, plus you can discuss what you are looking for with experts.

Be a detective Look carefully at the piece you are interested in to find out if it is genuine or of the quality you desire. You don’t want something that has been reupholstered, fixed with modern parts or even repainted when you want it in its original state. So this means examine underneath it, look at the joins for modern screws and the surface for scratches.

Know your wood Give yourself a crash course in recognising types of wood because when you are out and about looking for a chest of drawers it is useful to recognise oak and mahogany because they usually are higher quality and walnut usually indicates a chest is early 18th century.

The guide to kitchen bliss

You look at your tired cabinets and decide it’s time to give your kitchen a much needed makeover…

Where do you begin? With so many things to consider when planning a new kitchen it’s difficult to know where to start. Due to the majority of people keeping a kitchen for approximately 20 years it is important to start out right and set your ideals before you take that step down the kitchen aisle. As the heart of the home, the kitchen is a space to share with your family and friends; not only that, but the amount of time spent there means it needs to be two things – practical and enjoyable. Whether you are updating your kitchen to benefit you, or to add financial value to your home, getting it right the first time is essential, and should be hassle free. So how do you buy a new kitchen? It’s not a case of one size fits all. You can’t walk into a shop, buy one and take it home with you. If it’s something you’ve never done before, be prepared to enter a whole new world of retail. Over the last 25 years Aspect Kitchens have built an excellent reputation for both bespoke kitchen designs and excellent service. With standards like no other, here are some top tips for kitchen harmony.

Like a test, revise

Scroll through images until your heart is content. When you get to a showroom you will be baffled by the amount of choice. With endless finishes, colours and designs, collecting images will not only assist your designer but keep you focused on what you are trying to achieve. Look into different work surfaces, it is essential to be aware of their pros and cons. Some are prone to scratching or chipping, whilst others might scold under a hot pan. Have a brief idea of your appliance wish list, you may be keeping your old appliances but have a list of those to be included, to aid planning.

Plan

Window heights, doors, even plug sockets can alter a design so having a detailed layout plan will give your designer a guide to usable space. Provide them with as much information as you can about your lifestyle too; for example the size of your family, your storage needs, and how you use your kitchen. Some designers may arrange to have a consultation with you in your home to see the way you live to aid their design.

Budget

Designers love what they do. Be sure to put some reins on them before they design you a dream kitchen you will have to re-mortgage for. Adding details to a design is a lot easier than taking them away, so work out where you would make cuts if necessary and be prepared to spend a little extra.

Quality

Inspect the cabinets. Hinges, drawer runners, and mechanisms are all overlooked when your new kitchen is fitted; however it is the smaller details that extend a kitchen’s lifetime and durability. Stretch your budget as far as possible when it comes to cabinets, a well-manufactured kitchen will look better for longer.

Give yourself enough time

From completed design, you are generally looking at a 6 – 8 week lead time. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to get your design right and furniture installed correctly in time for any crucial dates.

55 the riverside journals

Finally have fun

Lastly, work with someone you like and trust. This should be a fun experience and you should come out at the end of it with your perfect space. Having a good relationship with your designer will allow you to get the best from them and your kitchen. Aspect Kitchens 1-3 Poplar Court Parade, Richmond Road,TW1 2DT 0208 892 5343

What is Luxury? a V&A and Crafts Council Exhibition

hat is Luxury? aims to interrogate and expand understandings of luxury by presenting exceptional examples of contemporary design and craftsmanship alongside conceptual projects which interrogate fundamental ideas of luxury, its production and future. From a diamond made from roadkill to a vending machine stocked with DNA, a golden crown for ecclesiastical use to traditional military tailoring, over 100 objects address how luxury is made and understood in a physical, conceptual and cultural capacity. The opening section of the exhibition considers objects defined as luxurious by the excellence of their design and craftsmanship. On display are objects which celebrate the investment of time and application of skill in the process of making, including the Space Travellers’ Watch, an entirely handcrafted mechanical timepiece by renowned British watchmaker George Daniels, a laser-cut haute couture dress by fashion designer Iris van Herpen, a chandelier by Studio Drift featuring real dandelion seeds applied by hand to LED lights, a Hermès Talaris saddle which combines traditional leather craftsmanship with a technologically innovative structure, and the Bubble Bath necklace by Nora Fok, made from more than 1000 hand-knitted nylon bubbles. Time Elapsed, a large spirograph designed by Philippe Malouin for glassware company Lobmeyr which rotates to draw patterns made of sand, comments on the time-intensive process of making fine crystal and acts as a centrepiece. Seemingly disparate objects are juxtaposed and presented alongside terminology associated with luxury in order to focus on specific aspects of its many possible interpretations. Bowls by the artist Chung Hae-Cho created entirely through building up multiple layers of lacquer are placed alongside a menswear ensemble by designer Carol Christian Poell, known for his devotion to critically examining and perfecting techniques of tailoring. The grouping demonstrates how a high level of expertise is refined and investigated in making exquisitely finished objects. What is Luxury? also considers time and space as fundamental aspects constituting luxury, especially within a 21stcentury urban context. Works including Time for Yourself, a playful toolkit for misdirection which features a watch with no dial and a compass which spins to random co-ordinates, invite visitors to contemplate the idea of getting lost and their relationship to the luxuries of space and time. The exhibition speculates about the future of luxury by presenting a range of design and art projects which interrogate relationships between luxury, value and materials. Hair Highway by Studio Swine sets human hair in resin to create highly decorative pieces of furniture and accessories. The rich surfaces of the objects on display are reminiscent of valuable but limited luxury materials such as tortoiseshell, horn and exotic wood, but are made of one of the few natural resources which increases along with the world’s population. Aram Mooradian’s A Comprehensive Atlas of Gold Fictions re-examines our relationship with gold, a finite luxury material. Everyday objects made from gold mined in Australia, including a headphone jack and a pendant, are engraved with personal local histories to encode them with a new cultural value. Also on display are a set of vessels by Unknown Fields Division made from toxic mud collected on a recent expedition to the Rare Earth Elements’ mines in Inner Mongolia. What is Luxury? provokes thinking and debate through fictional scenarios that consider issues like privacy, resources and access that could determine future ideas of luxury. American artist Gabriel Barcia-Colombo’s DNA Vending Machine contains pre-packaged DNA samples and invites visitors to consider our increasing access to biotechnology and how privacy and ownership of one’s own DNA may become a luxury in the future. In the installation The Boltham Legacy, artist Henrik Nieratschker tells the fictional story of a British billionaire who sends altered bacteria into space in an attempt to find valuable metals on distant planets. The piece speculates about the luxury of having exclusive access to resources. Through the movement from more traditional explanations of luxury to conceptual projects, What is Luxury? aims to take visitors on a journey and prompt them to consider what luxury means and how it relates to their own lives. Visiting research fellow Leanne Wierzba, co-curator of the exhibition, says, ‘What is Luxury? will reveal the stories and craftsmanship behind the exquisite and intriguing objects on display and demonstrate the precision, time and application of skills invested to produce them.’ V&A curator of Contemporary Furniture Jana Scholze and co-curator of What is Luxury?, adds, ‘As its title suggests, the exhibition questions the very idea of luxury today. It challenges common interpretations of luxury, invites close examination of luxury production and extends ideas of what luxury can be. Essentially, the question of luxury is a personal one.’ Rosy Greenlees, Executive Director, Crafts Council said: “We are delighted to collaborate with the V&A on this third exhibition following Out of the Ordinary (2007) and Power of Making (2011), which both delighted audiences by offering new perspectives on craft. What is Luxury? brings together the distinctive expertise of our two institutions to explore the intricate connections between craftsmanship and luxury. Over 100 remarkable objects look beyond the widely understood perceptions of luxury involving skill, time and rarity to question what luxury means in the 21st century and in the future.”

pened in December 2002, sketch was the mastermind of French 3 Michelin starred chef Pierre Gagnaire and restaurateur Mourad Mazouz. A destination place for food, art and music, sketch has been highly acclaimed by the public and critics alike. After dreaming of a way to create such a dynamic and one-of-a-kind establishment, Mourad Mazouz gave life to sketch over two expansive floors of a converted 18th century building in Conduit Street, Mayfair, London. sketch is, and has always been, a unique and very trendy place. Since its opening, it has attracted unprecedented media reaction for its myriad of food, drink and entertainment styles. The artwork throughout the building is always current and captures the imagination. In 2014, The Gallery was rethought by David Shrigley and India Mahdavi who created a clean, strikingly simple interior that updates an archetypal brasserie design. With a very contemporary splash of pink on both walls and velvet-covered custom-made furniture, the new design provides the perfect backdrop for David Shrigley’s artwork. Of course the music as well is always cutting edge and sets the tone for an extremely enjoyable time in each of the restaurants, not to mention Gagnaire’s culinary genius in creating the menus throughout sketch, achieving high praise and bringing in crowds on an extremely consistent basis. Furthermore, the afternoon tea dining experience at The Gallery is often renowned as one of the best in London. Arguably one of the most sophisticated parts of sketch, The Lecture Room & Library, was awarded its first Michelin star in 2005, and was awarded a fifth Rosette in the AA Restaurant Guide 2009. In 2012, the restaurant won its second Michelin star, which it retains today. The Lecture Room & Library continues its partnership with the Royal Academy of Arts, offering tickets for the museum’s upcoming exhibition, Summer Exhibition 2015, along with a three-course gourmet lunch in the two Michelin-starred restaurant. Starters include Watermelon Sake Sorbet with puffed rice and Stiletto Aubergines with a spinach salad and mozzarella. When it comes to entrées, the menu offers a choice of fish, meat, or vegetarian dishes including Native Pollock Pan-fried with Chickpea Flour with Grilled Shiitake with Coriander, Open Ravioli with artichokes and spring onions, or Whole Roasted Poussin with savoury confit new potatoes and red peppers. Dessert is a choice of the famous Pierre Gagnaire trio of sweet treats or a delicious cheese board featuring cheeses from Neil’s Yard, London & Bernard Antony of Alsace with accompaniments such as Pear and Roquefort ice cream, toasted hazelnuts, white beetroot purée, and a seasonal chutney. sketch 9 Conduit Street, London, W1S 2XG sketch.london +44 (0) 20 7659 4500

Solo exhibition of works by internationally acclaimed artist Charles Newington at Oil&Water Contemporary Art Gallery, 340 Old York Road, Wandsworth Town, SW18 1SS

Exhibition open 18th June – 5th July

I

for opening hours see website www.oilandwater.co.uk

f you have not already discovered this gem of a gallery, it is well worth a short detour. Five minutes’ walk from the river, just South of Wandsworth Bridge, the gallery is very close to the Alma pub and Wandsworth Town Station. Oil&Water presents a new exhibition every month, so there is always something new to see. The next exhibition features Charles Newington, best known for the stunning giant chalkcut hill figure on the North Downs at Folkestone – a unique stylised white horse now adopted as an icon for the region. Pigeon-holing Charles is impossible – a diverse career over 40 years is proof. Water colourist, painter, printmaker and book illustrator: all of these roles have shaped an ever changing, constantly fresh approach to his work. The diversions have been interesting and fruitful. He tends to work in series – “Beasts”, inspired by Dordogne’s Palaeolithic painted caves, led him to making images for his giant, chalk-cut hill figures. The White Horse at Folkestone will shortly be followed by Gog and Magog on Plymouth Hoe, whose story is the first chapter in British history. Charles admits to multiple artistic/creative personalities, which can appear at the whim of the Muse. Abstract, figurative, topographical, fantastic – he welcomes every new challenge. He takes inspiration from his travels around the world; this new exhibition at Oil&Water will feature new paintings from Cuba, with a selection of work from Khajuraho, the Sea Odyssey, Book of Revelation and the Edward Lear series. If you are not familiar with Charles Newington’s fabulous artwork, now is the time to make up for your omission: visit this unique exhibition before 5th July. Stonor

T

he house appears as an E-shaped Tudor manor house behind a warm red brick façade with Georgian windows. Behind the Georgian exterior is a much older collection of buildings, which have never been completely rebuilt, including a hall dating back to medieval times and now used as the Tea Room. The 17th century library has a magnificent vaulted ceiling. The main public rooms, restored in the 18th and early 19th centuries from a 14th century hall contain fine furniture, bronzes, silhouettes, Italian pictures and drawings and a collection of contemporary ceramics. New for visitors in 2015 is a display of work by one of Korea’s leading ceramic artists, demonstrating just how well contemporary ceramics fit into a much older architectural setting. Lord Camoys has collected contemporary ceramics for over 22 years and has had the privilege of meeting many of the artists in person on his travels. The Chapel, the most ancient of the Stonor buildings, is dedicated to the Blessed Trinity, and remains open today, as it has for more than 850 years, for the celebration of Mass. The Chapel was built on the site of a pagan place of worship and adopted by Christianity in the late 13th or early 14th Century. Considerable conservation and redecoration of the Chapel and Tower has been carried out over the winter John Steane with support from Heritage Lottery Fund and other said in his book ‘Oxfordshire’: grant giving charities. The work will enable the Chapel to continue to celebrate Mass into the future, as well as “If I had to suggest to a visitor welcome visitors and celebrate baptisms, weddings and who had only one day to sample funerals. the beauties of Oxfordshire, The walled garden rises up behind the ancient house I would suggest a visit to and is divided between the original pleasure garden and Stonor and a walk through its the old kitchen garden. The gardens cleverly combine delectable park.” formal design with informal planting. During the summer you can see old fashioned roses, peonies and lavenders, flanked by ancient yew trees and clipped box hedges on the 17th century terraces. Climbing the terrace stages there is a long mixed border, ending with a Japanese garden house, built by the 5th Lord Camoys after his visit to Kyoto in 1906. For the first time the Shrubbery, situated just outside the Walled Garden, will be open for visitors to enjoy. It was badly damaged in the 1991 storm. Clearing the debris and replanting began almost immediately. Visitors will find a delightful nuttery of hazels, walnuts and sweet chestnuts. Ornamental cherries, malus and mulberries all under-planted with primroses and narcissi add colour. One of the finest views of the house can be found from the footpath than runs through the park. From here you can see over the house to the gardens beyond, watch the Red Kites and other bird life, along with the herd of Fallow Deer.

Summer is here, and what better way to appreciate the weather than with the roof down on a convertible car?

T

he Audi TT was launched in 1998, first as a coupé then as a Roadster drop-top, and has enjoyed star status ever since. All-new for 2015 is the third-generation of the cabriolet, with a wide range of trim levels to suit different budgets. However, the one thing they all have is the TT’s smart Z-folding insulated canvas hood, which collapses into its own space behind the two seats so there’s no compromise to the boot. Fully electric, 10 seconds up or down and able to operate at speeds of up to 30mph means there will be no nasty surprises if the weather turns autumnal. Speaking of the boot, it is surprisingly roomy and goes back a long way. You won’t get multiple hardshell family suitcases in there, but wheel-along hand luggage and a few soft bags will certainly fit. Another practical feature is the lockable compartment between the two seats to hide small items of value. But my favourite innovation is the three tiny stud microphones embedded in the driver’s seat belt fabric. It means at least one will be near enough to your mouth so you can make and take calls with the roof down. Audi is particularly proud of the driver’s instruments. Called the ‘virtual cockpit’, the physical dials have been replaced with a customisable 12-inch screen behind the steering wheel. My description doesn’t do it justice; it’s very impressive and beautifully designed. Expect to see it on more cars in the future, Audi and otherwise.

Audi TT Roadster

The result is a strikingly minimalist dashboard, with fewer actual buttons. There’s one to turn on the audio, then almost everything else can be controlled from steering wheel buttons or a controller knob behind the gearstick. Also eye-catching are the three circular air vents, which have the digital controls built into the centre of them. Technical improvements over the second-generation car can be summed up as ‘more power, less emissions’ from the engine. Volume sales of the TT Roadster will focus on two options, a 2.0-litre 230PS petrol and a 2.0-litre 184PS diesel. With a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, both are capable of getting the car from 0-62mph in under eight seconds. Trim levels are either Sport or S line, but above them both is the TTS Roadster – a range-topper with four-wheel drive, extra kit as standard and a more powerful 310PS version of the same petrol engine. The result is a 0-62mph time of less than five seconds. Prices for the TT Roadster start at £32,045, with the TTS costing from £38,790. The one thing the TT has always been praised for is its driving performance, and this new model is no exception. The TTS wasn’t available to drive, but the two other models were both extremely enjoyable. Many people will prefer the punchy acceleration offered by the diesel, but I felt the petrol was better suited to the character of the car. It’s fabulous fun to drive, with excellent road-holding on all surfaces. All we need now is some summer sun…

Volkswagen Golf R Estate This is a 300PS hot hatch with four-wheel drive, and so confident was VW in its new baby that it let journalists take it on a race track. With a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 155mph, the car is well-suited to circuits and more than proved its mettle. It’s exceptionally composed, with far more grip than most drivers will ever find the need to use. The downside is the price; at £33,585 it’s a lot of money to pay for such a compact car.

If performance cars are your thing, but you need something with a bit more practicality than a two-seater convertible, this new version of the Volkswagen Golf is worth considering. For more than a decade, R-badged cars have been the flagship of the Golf range. But there’s never been an estate until now. You won’t be surprised to learn it’s called the Golf R Estate.

A classic case of nostalgia

The arrival of summer signals the start of the classic car season in England – an intoxicating blend of chrome, quirky charm and retro style, with some heartstopping racing moments too. While a host of car shows on village greens up and down the country give proud owners the opportunity to polish up their prize possessions, some topclass race meetings draw huge crowds to watch the machines in real wheel-towheel action.

ith interest in historic motorsport at an all-time high, a record attendance of 100,000 is expected to attend the Silverstone Classic from 24 to 26 July as it celebrates its 25th anniversary just three weeks after the Northamptonshire circuit hosts the Formula One British Grand Prix. Each year tens of millions of pounds worth of classic cars compete flat-out around the famous track, the birthplace of the FIA Formula One World Championship and the home of British motorsport. The three-day festival features the best of historic racing, covering more than eight decades from the 1920s, with pre-war sports cars, early Grand Prix cars and the glamour era of the 1950s and 1960s as well as 1980s F1 turbocharged racing cars and GT legends from the 1990s. Professional racing drivers often take part as they relish the opportunity to race some wonderful historic cars in a laidback atmosphere around a great track. Competition is so hot that races require a full day of qualifying events on the Friday; there have been more than 1,100 entries in each of the past three years. All weekend there is non-stop action with some 10 races each day, including historic Formula One, sports cars, GT and touring car grids. One of the biggest attractions for this 25th anniversary year will be an exciting new high-speed demonstration, “90s F1 Legends”, which will celebrate the era when the likes of Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher ruled the racetrack. Just as popular as the racing is the opportunity to get close to beautiful, original cars. Owners love to display their machines and compare experiences of life with a classic. Last year more than 9,000 privately-owned classic cars were on show, and a record 114 clubs have already signed up for 2015. Fans are also treated to stunning parades, often celebrating important milestones in automotive history, while the serious enthusiast can attend auctions and car clinics. There’s something going on every minute of the day during the meeting. Aerial displays, live music from classic rock bands, a fun fair and retail outlets combine to make it the ideal opportunity for a family outing with a difference. Tickets for the Silverstone Classic must be bought in advance: 0871 231 0849 or see silverstoneclassic.com.

If you can’t get to Silverstone or Goodwood, why not take a look at Knebworth’s annual Classic Motor Show and Vintage Fair or the Blenheim Palace Festival of Transport, both held on 30 and 31 August? Live commentary at each event helps to bring motoring history to life. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Knebworth features more than 2,500 classic and collectable vehicles, with displays and parades in the impressive grounds of the Hertfordshire stately home. Vehicles include saloons, sports, American, commercial, military and classic motorcycles. Tickets cover admission to the Knebworth gardens, dinosaur trail, park and adventure playground, so there are plenty of activities for families. Discounted advance tickets are available online at knebworthhouse.com. The Blenheim show is relatively new, in its ninth year, but has fast become a summertime fixture for car lovers. As well as classic cars, it features motorcycles, Minis and VWs, customs, hot rods and Americans, kit and sports cars, all in the glorious landscaped setting of the Oxfordshire countryside. Tickets from blenheimpalace.com.

Down in West Sussex from 11 to 13 September, the summer will draw to a close in fine style with the renowned Goodwood Revival, the world’s largest annual historic motor racing and vintage culture event. This three-day meeting near Chichester is more of a festival, with thousands of enthusiasts dressing up in vintage fashions and celebrating the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. That was the golden era when Goodwood ranked alongside Silverstone, staging competitions for all contemporary racing cars and motorcycles, including Formula One. The Revival lovingly recreates the period with shows and races for machines that would have competed during that time. Many famous names from racing past and present take part, often competing in the most unlikely of machines on the restored circuit; they include Formula One stars, rally winners, endurance racing champions and top bikers. One of the highlights this year will be a line-up of 1950s Ferrari racing sports cars to contest the Lavant Cup. These were the cars that elevated Ferrari’s reputation, claiming five world sports car championship titles and chalking up major wins in all the famous races including Le Mans, Spa and the Mille Miglia. The Revival will also mark 50 years since the debut of the iconic GT car, the Shelby Daytona Coupe, with a neverbefore-seen collection of the six V8 racers. Two will race in the showpiece RAC Tourist Trophy on the Sunday and there will be a special demonstration run on each day. For many people, the Revival car show is as important as the racing. It features an eye-catching array of about 4,500 rare and wonderful classics, all pre-1975 tax-exempt machines. A best in show competition is held each day to celebrate the cream of the crop, with shortlists chosen by Sir Stirling Moss and the winning car voted for by the public. There are stunning aviation displays too. This year’s 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain will be marked by a line-up of more than 30 iconic British aircraft that flew in the Second World War. The exhibition will comprise Supermarine Spitfires, Hawker Hurricanes and the world’s only airworthy Bristol Blenheim, honouring the courageous air crews that flew them in battle. With most Revival visitors choosing to look the part by dressing in period style, there is also a daily best dressed competition for three men and one woman. Many people – both men and women – go to great lengths to achieve an authentic look, at the very least donning tweeds and trilbies, frills and frocks as they revel in the nostalgic party atmosphere. The result is a fascinating step-back-in-time spectacle. Popular looks for women are 1940s landgirls, 1950s glamour as exemplified by Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, and the Swinging Sixties. Men often opt for a sophisticated Cary Grant style, or else they go for a Teddy Boy look (not forgetting the Brylcreem, of course) or Rocker outfit with lots of leather. Yasemen Kaner-White points you to the perfect places to watch polo this summer... One of the oldest games in the world, dating back to around 600 BC in North Persia, nothing beats polo when it comes to an outdoor sport, fit for Kings and family outings alike. The UK polo season kicks off in May and ends in September, with indoor (arena) polo being played throughout the winter. The best polo players rotate around the globe following the seasons, to partake in the most prestigious games. They start in Argentina, followed by America and then come to the UK...

Dates For Your Diary this summer:

A great spectator sport with fans close to the action at all times. This is a chance for polo, beach volleyball and the Jurassic English coast to show off its attributes. The beach after-parties are a massive pull too. www.sandpolo.com

Irish Fashion Designer talks to the Riverside Journals by Michele Brooks & Janine Connolly

Did you work with your father in his business? No, I didn’t really, I more or less left Ireland when I was 19 years old and travelled to Paris and lived there for a couple of years and Marks & Spencer asked me back to London to work for them. They were planning to take on the Italian market and I was sent over to Italy after six months’ training. I stayed in Italy for a number of years working for Marina Chantay from the north of Italy to the south of Italy. I was just a new designer that was trying to scrape a living. Do you miss living in Dublin? No, no, I am fortunate to go back quite regularly. I work with a store brand named Dunnes store in Dublin and take regular trips to visit. I design their homeware and ladies wear as well. So I guess I am kind of working between the two countries somewhat. I am very busy and very lucky. Paul Costelloe’s name has retained a presence so I have survived the good times and the bad times. How did you find designing the uniform ranges for the airlines? Was this interesting? I designed uniforms for British Airways and Aer Lingus. Yes, it was fabulous as it was a time when British Airways were spending lots of money and Concorde was still in the air. The big wheel had just been put up and it was all a very exciting time – and it still is exciting. I should imagine that it is always exciting in fashion, as it is ongoing? It is! It is a combination of the balance of working and with family life. I have read that you were one of seven siblings, as was your wife, and you have seven children? Exactly, it’s crazy! Are any of your children following in your footsteps? I have one in the Chelsea School of Arts, one in the arts, one at Wimbledon, one an opera singer, one artist but working on the shop floor, one barrister, one broker. Does your wife get involved, Paul, with your label? She certainly has an opinion, she is very style aware. She is quite gifted; she isn’t young but can throw on clothes and look good in them. I live on an island, I think I am a very independent man. Paul, from a ladies perspective it is always nice to see a well dressed man. Do you think so? I wouldn’t think I was today as I have just cycled across to South Molten Lane from Gloucester Place. I am lucky, I am tall – that always helps! You can get away with things that other people can’t.

What fashion designers do you aspire to? Really since I was quite young it’s been Giorgio Armani. To me he is the king of style, then after that I have a lot of admiration for Dolce and Gabbana, very creative and very modern with the fabrics that they use. And lots of other people, but basically I am a tailor, that’s my strength. I read, Paul, that your breakthrough with your label outside Ireland came with Princess Diana? Yes, it was a very important time indeed. Yes, I always remember the first time it happened. I went to Kensington Palace with my assistant and Princess Diana received me at the top of the stairs, she was so nice. I went in, I had brought along all my garments and she introduced me to the two boys who were very small at the time. It was an amazing meeting and we got on really well and I made many frequent visits to the palace. Diana was a great ambassador for fashion, and a great mother and after that say no more. Your lines and the cut of your designs are really nice. I don’t know, I don’t rate myself. I am always trying to rate myself, that is what keeps me going. I think once a designer starts believing in himself he is not a designer any more and you are just putting your name on products. I am very hands on. Paul, would you consider a photo shoot for our front covers of the Journals? Yes, sure, sure. I would love to. My daughter helps me out when she is not working in opera, she comes and helps out and she would be great at this. So, what is next for Paul Costelloe? Well, I am working on my catwalk show in September 2015. What else? What I want to tell you is I am doing my Spring collection now, here on the Windsmoor Collection, and working on my homeware collection with Dunnes store back in Ireland. You should go online and have a look. There is some really nice stuff on their website. Have you ever heard of Dunnes store? (No, we haven’t.). I know, I know, they have over 200 stores but have not brought them over to the UK. You should come over and do a story sometime. How did you get into the homeware side of your brand? Every designer gets involved in the homeware side as it is a cut-throat business and you have to keep your brand alive. I have become a brand now, rather than just a designer. I was very lucky, as I never went to fashion college; it’s all about surviving and appreciating what you have in life and trying to be a good father. It is all about the balance. So, Paul, do you have sons and daughters? Yes, I have six sons and one daughter, with the daughter being in the middle and the most dominant one, we say, probably being the only girl. Paul, it has been an absolute pleasure, thank you for your time.

What got you into the fashion business, and what inspired you? Through failing in every aspect in life – initially I was a painter and decorator. My father owned a raincoat factory in Dublin, Southern Ireland, my mother was a New Yorker so she was very cosmopolitan and trendy. I just find women attractive, but found it very difficult to get on with females, so by going into the fashion industry, it was a way of getting their attention I suppose; it was fun for a single man of 19/20 years old to be in.

here are many different reasons to spa. Some people want to spend time with a loved one, others want to celebrate. Some spa to look good, others want to relax. A recent survey of the spa-going public on goodspaguide.co.uk found that a massive 82 percent of people go to a spa to get some down time and unwind. Just over 50 percent spa to spend time with a loved one, but only 11 percent said they spa to look good. Great news for those of us who opt for massage over manicures! Hats off to more romantic partners; men are three times more likely to spa with their loved one than women. Many people are looking to spa for a sense of wellness. It’s been en vogue in Europe for years, but using spa as a space where you can eat well, have holistic treatments and look after yourself is the perfect antidote to a busy life. After thorough research (it’s a hard job – but someone has to do it!) the Spa Spies look at spas from four perspectives. Spagoers in the UK normally look for fine facilities, good customer service, excellent treatments, and a sense of peace and quiet. We’ve found that pet peeves include poor customer service, noise and badly maintained facilities. Thankfully few good spas have those problems, but if you’re in doubt check out the Bubble Rating; it’ll give you a good idea of what to expect.

www.goodspaguide.co.uk 01603 692296 Good Spa Guide, Rouen House, Rouen Road, Norwich, NR1 1RB

Whatever your reasons, there’s always a spa that can help. For those looking for wellness, quite a few spas offer a wellbeing day where you have a session with a personal trainer, holistic treatments and healthy but delicious food. We’ve heard great things about these days at Calcot Spa in the Cotswolds and Armathwaite Hall in the Lakes. If you’re looking to cocoon away from the world, you’ll often find smaller or city spas ideal. They’re normally very quiet, hidden away from the high street, and have cosy chillout spaces. Numbers are generally kept low too, so they’re the perfect place to find deep relaxation. We love The Spa at Dolphin Square in Pimlico and Blythswood Square in Glasgow for all out zen. If you want to celebrate, people generally go for the super-luxe or larger spaces where they can bring a party of friends. If we’re talking super-luxurious there are a handful of spas around the UK that offer exceptional standards; from Michelin starred food to extensive wine-cellars, from film-worthy landscapes to impeccable customer service. To reach five bubble luxury, spas really have to have it all; we love places like Lucknam Park, The Vineyard and Pennyhill Park for special celebrations. For larger scale celebrations people generally look for spas with space. The new Aqua Sana Spa at Woburn Forest has six different spas within a spa, so there’s plenty of room for groups to explore. Other spas that offer facilities aplenty include Ragdale Hall, The Woodland Spa and Whittlebury Hall. We’re firm believers that spa should be available to all; find your perfect spa and sample the best that UK spa-ing has to offer.

The role of selfesteem in well-being

The Secret to Successful S Relationships

www.baileystainescoaching.co.uk alex@baileystainescoaching.co.uk 07710 328 586

Signs of Low Self-Esteem Individuals with low self-esteem may look confident and in control to the outside world. They may even be able to mask their selfdoubt with casual friends and acquaintances. However, around the people who know them best the signs are evident. Individuals of any age with negative or low self-esteem will: Continually question their own decisions and abilities

• highly defensive, aggressive or over-confident about • Appear decisions they make • Be a perfectionist • Withdraw or avoid social situations • Have difficulty with change at work or in relationships very negatively to questioning or criticism, even when • Respond justified or provided in a supportive and educational manner • Be pessimistic about the future • Have a general decrease in performance at work over time • Resent the accomplishments of others gauge their success against the success of • Constantly someone else

These behaviours often start early in a child’s life. They may be seen as part of the individual’s personality, which may make it even more difficult for the individual to seek help to make a change.

Treatment Options The reality is low self-esteem starts at an early age from messages received by a child. Parents who are critical, fail to interact with the child, send negative messages and those who fail to show love and caring for children are originators of poor or low self-esteem. From this internal messaging any external failures, instead of being seen as a learning experience, become a signal of just how ineffective the child is. With time and repetition, this message becomes internalised until it is the constant message playing over and over again. It is possible through counselling, therapy and exercises to change the negative inner message loop. Understanding more about your talents, skills and achievements and replacing the old message with a positive, proactive and motivational message can bring about positive self-esteem and a genuine appreciation for self.

he single most important life skill that we can possess is the ability to form happy and successful relationships with others, whether that is lover, friend, family, or work colleague. Good partnerships are based on positive elements such as sharing, learning, fun, empathy and kindness. Think about the people you spend time with. Is this your experience? If it is, fantastic, but if not, maybe it’s time to make some changes… How would it be if you were to make a conscious decision to ditch the relationships with those people in your life who drain your energy levels, reduce your confidence and self esteem and add nothing but trouble and strife to your life? Instead, start nurturing people who make you feel good, make you smile, those who exude optimism and positivity. Know that partnerships are about give and take, and in order to receive you first need to give, so, invest! Make time to build good relationships, share knowledge and memorable encounters. Throw a lunch party, start a book club, arrange a picnic… Celebrate good times and life – relationships are built on shared experiences. Unfortunately it’s not always possible to completely avoid the toxic, so we need to learn to deal with conflict too, by compromising – this is not the same as giving in – it’s about working together, cooperation, about finding balance with shared responsibility and assertiveness. Make your focus finding common ground for a positive outcome rather than creating conflict. Finally, be open to building relationships with people who are different to you – love the challenge and embrace the incredible diversity of others – a lifetime of successful relationships is the a sign of a life well lived! Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, uses her own unique mixture of NLP and talking therapies to help her clients achieve the happiness, success and balance they need to live their lives to the full.

elf-esteem, or the way an individual evaluates and appraises his or her own self-worth, is the fundamental aspect of all well-being. As it is a very subjective judgement based on both internal and external beliefs and standards, how we view ourselves on a personal, intimate and sometimes unknown basis will have a very large impact on our ability to be confident, assertive and emotionally healthy. People can be highly successful and struggle with their selfesteem. It is not uncommon for people in lofty positions in society to have difficulties in seeing themselves for who they are and what they have accomplished. Even professional actors, musicians, politicians, lawyers, doctors and business and industry leaders can and do struggle with low self-esteem.

Evotone

I

t’s a wonderfully sunny day in the capital and everyone is soaking up the rays. No sun worshipping for me at Riverside Journals as I have an appointment at EVOTONE in Kensington High Street. The brain behind EVOTONE is Kamila Pleszkiewicz, a stunning petite slim blonde with a lovely polish accent. I am directed straight into her therapy room and I feel I’ve entered a state-of-the-art space capsule; there are a number of sleek machines and I am intrigued to know what they do. Kamila is keen to explain all and, chiefly, her wish to help men and women feel good about their bodies and experience how important feeling good makes you have a brighter outlook on life. With that she expands on her body-shaping techniques: XBody EMS and i-LipoXcell. XBody EMS is a workout with a difference. The patient wears a body suit fitted with pads receiving electrical impulses that stimulate the muscles and force them to work in a much quicker way than conventional exercises would allow. A wire relays information from the suit to a monitor programmed with various workouts, which intensify the effort and increase with each session. The system promises to give fast and effective transformation and helps with weight loss, posture, backache, bone fracture, osteoporosis, skin tightening and mood enhancement (as exercise encourages the production of serotonin, promoting well-being and happiness). Kamila then explains the next sets of machines: i-LipoXcell. This system is a non-surgical way of reducing fat cells. First, pads with lasers are applied in specific troublesome areas (such as inner thighs, buttock, under arm). The lasers stimulate fat cells promoting their reduction. To remove and filter toxins and excess fluids from the body, a vacuum massage follows the laser session (also known as lymphatic drainage). The combination of the lasers and vacuum helps reduce unwanted fat cells in a fast, painless and effective way. Results are immediate and I am told each treatment equates to an inch loss (3cm). The treatment ends with Radio Frequency to tone and tighten the skin, improve skin conditions such as stretch marks and improve blood circulation to support cell lipolysis.

Before

After

By using XBody EMS and i-LipoXcell together, Kamila guarantees weight loss and body transformation in as little as eight sessions of no more than 20 minutes which is vital for people with busy lives and little time. She is keen to show me the proof and provides me with ‘before and after’ photographs. I am staggered by the transformation of each patient – they look slimmer, firmer and their skin looks rejuvenated. Some results are more spectacular than others depending on the amount of sessions and the commitment of each person. Kamila believes that this cannot be a quick fix. She helps her clients towards achieving a healthier lifestyle and promotes a combination of better food habits, hydration and sport. She says: ‘No change will occur if one keeps on stuffing burgers and pizzas!’. If her physique is anything to go by, then I am a convert! The treatments are not cheap but at 70% less than invasive surgery and giving quicker results than long sessions at the gym, then EVOTONE is worth a detour. If you want to quick start a healthier lifestyle or want to feel amazing for a special occasion, the treatments offered at EVOTONE are a MUST and I urge you to book an initial consultation to gain a better understanding of what Kamila offers and get that little bit closer to the incredible body you deserve.

How does the O-Shot® work?

The O-Shot

®

Take control of your sex life again. Many women suffer in silence when it comes to talking about sexual problems. Menopause, child-birth and even the natural ageing process can result in a loss of sensation, decreased sexual enjoyment and functional issues in the vaginal region. The O-Shot®, or Orgasm Shot®, is a pioneering new non-surgical technique which involves Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) being injected into the vagina in order to rejuvenate it and enhance sexual pleasure. The treatment can also improve function and relieve conditions such as stress urinary incontinence. “I don’t know what I was worried about” the actual procedure took only 5 minutes (aside from the prep), and although I was expecting to feel pain and discomfort, in actual fact it felt like a gentle pinch which surprised me because it was in a very sensitive part of the body. I didn’t feel any different but on the way home while I was on the train I experienced a terrible sneezing fit and couldn’t believe that I was still dry down below, and in fact I hadn’t embarrassed myself on a very busy train, as that definitely would of been the case before the O SHOT. The next day I decided to go to the gym and for the first time in years I was able to do a full workout including a 20 minute run on the treadmill, I felt totally confident that I wasn’t going to have an accident., I will definitely be back to my zumba class soon. This weekend I am really looking forward to being able to go out and not have to excuse myself 20 times to go to the ladies and to be able to laugh in confidence again. also to my surprise the third week after the o shot I am experiencing a very intense sexual arousal which Dr Sherif said it will happen, I really wasn’t expecting that as my aim was the urinary incontinence but what a lovely surprise. Dr Sherif has really changed my life and there is no doubt about that, and if you are considering the O SHOT be prepared to have control over your life again. “Its a very liberating experience”

The O-Shot® procedure works by using the body’s natural ability to heal and rejuvenate itself by injecting growth factor rich Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) into the vagina to stimulate a regenerative process. It is the same technique used for the Vampire Facelift® whereby a small amount of blood is taken from the arm and then placed in a centrifuge where the plasma is then harvested. This plasma contains cell-regenerating growth factors which, when injected into the vagina, trigger stem cells to grow healthier vaginal tissue.

Am I suitable for this treatment? There are a number of sexual arousal disorders that the O-Shot® can be used to address. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 20 women suffer from Female Sexual Arousal Disorder, which means that, while they may want to have sex, they find it difficult to get aroused, experience pleasure or achieve orgasm. Around 5% of women are also thought to suffer from Female Orgasmic Disorder, where they can become aroused by have difficulty achieving orgasm. Some women also suffer with pain during and after sex, which is not from decreased lubrication or vaginal spasm, some suffer from stress urinary incontinence especially after delivery. If you have any of these problems then the O-Shot® could be a solution for you. As with any treatment, you will need to have a consultation with Dr Elwakil first in order to assess your suitability and rule out any contraindications.

Does it hurt? As a non-surgical solution, there is minimal pain and discomfort associated with the O-Shot® treatment with some patients reporting experiencing no pain at all. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic to minimise any pain.

How long does it take? The treatment will take around 40 minutes.

Is there any downtime/recovery time? One of the big advantages of the O-Shot® treatment is that you can return to your normal activities immediately after treatment. Sexual intercourse can even be resumed the same day.

What kind of results can I expect? Patients who have undergone the O-Shot® procedure have reported: Greater arousal from clitoral stimulation Younger, smoother skin of the vulva (lips of the vagina) A tighter introitus (vaginal opening) Stronger orgasm More frequent orgasm Increased sexual desire Increased ability to have a vaginal orgasm Decreased pain for those with dyspareunia (painful intercourse) Increased natural lubrication Decreased urinary incontinence

orfolk is a bounteous county with an incredible array of crops, eateries and artisan creators. Bring together three women who are involved with the food community and passionate about promoting the wealth of produce of their home county, add a wish to support a worthwhile charity and it doesn’t take too long to work out that a cookery book might be on the cards, on the bookshelves and gracing coffee tables. Authors Mary Kemp, Melinda Raker and Vanessa Scott have not compromised in the production of this excellent book, which will raise not just funds but also the profile of the wonderful work of Marie Curie, providing care and support for people living with a terminal illness, and their families. With 192 full colour pages, this hardback gem has been designed by Niki Medlik, recent Head of Jacket Design at Thames and Hudson, edited by Mari Roberts who has worked with Rick Stein, Raymond Blanc and Gordon Ramsay, and the stunning photography is by Keiron Tovell. The best makers, bakers and growers from across the Norfolk acres have come together to support this venture with funds, enthusiasm and a wealth of skills. Top chefs, including Galton Blackiston, Chris Coubrough, Richard Hughes and Roger Hickman, share the recipe platform with the Lord Bishop of Norwich, Anthony Gormley, Stella Rimington, 13-year-old Mermaid Sandelson (a recent outstanding winner of a baking competition), and 103-year-old Alice Syzling who was in service for many years and is a wonderful home baker. The authors highlight the myriad of edible gifts of the orchard, vineyard, hedgerow, sea, land and sky in the making of this book. Focusing not just on the niceties of afternoon tea but also the old fashioned joys of high tea; it is full of sweet and savoury goodies and a rather delectable selection of beverages too. But there is something else remarkably special about this book. Thanks to the subscriptions of the contributors and the generosity of the many sponsors, all the production costs are covered and every penny of the £20 retail cost will go to Marie Curie and thus every single book sold will fund the equivalent of one hour of nursing care and support for those who wish to spend their last few months, weeks or days at home. Given the choice, wouldn’t that be the preference for us all? So here is a chance to help provide that care: supporting Marie Curie in Norfolk is just a piece of cake.

To spf or to broad-spectrum spf!

That’s the question...

T

he summer is approaching and most of us are longing for the sunshine but it is very important to know how to protect our skin. First we need to recognise the danger of the ultraviolet (UV) radiation that comes from the sun. There are three types of UV rays according to their wavelength: UVC, UVB and UVA, the least dangerous being UVC as it is absorbed by the ozone layer. However, UVB causes sunburn while UVA is the most dangerous because its intensity persists throughout the day, is not filtered by glass or the ozone layer, and penetrates the skin dermal layer. UVA rays form nearly 95% of ultraviolet rays and are one of the main causes of premature skin ageing and a major contributor to increasing the risk of skin cancer. One of the most important ways to protect the skin on both our face and body is the application of a broad-spectrum SPF (sun protection factor). Why the term “sun block/total protection” has been banned. It’s imperative to know the difference between SPF and broad-spectrum SPF. The former only protects against UVB and up to few years ago was commonly referred to as “sun block” or “total skin protection” while the latter protects against both UVB and UVA. Changes in US and EU legislation have emphasised the need to use a broad-spectrum SPF which protects against UVB as well as UVA; this will include mineral protective elements, for example titanium and zinc oxides, and also chemical protection. There are many broad-spectrum SPFs on the market, with more or less the same efficacy since they contain the same ingredients. I would strongly recommend wearing broad-spectrum SPF 35 or higher to gain maximum protection because nothing provides 100% protection from the sun. And re-application is vital because broad-spectrum SPF only protects for up to two hours. There is a misconception that if there is no sun, there is no need to apply broad-spectrum SPF. This is wrong, as more than 80% of UV rays penetrate through clouds, even when the sky is overcast. Therefore my advice is to apply broad-spectrum SPF all-year-round, including when it’s snowing. In fact snow increases UV exposure by up to 80% while on the other hand long stretches of sand and the desert increase it by up to 20%. Finally don’t forget the advice that we all know yet many of us ignore: the importance of staying hydrated, especially when the temperature rises. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. This is essential for your overall body health and particularly for your skin. Have a lovely summer

Spain’s new-found economic prowess sparks property market growth

95 the riverside journals

H

aving exited a six-year downturn, Spain is going through a particularly purple patch and is on course to become the largest economy in the eurozone – overtaking the UK and the United States. The nation has posted seven consecutive quarters of growth and its property market is mirroring this optimistic outlook. The latest quarterly bulletin issued by the Spanish Council of Registrars showed a massive uptick for Q1 with just over 9% more residential properties changing hands over the same period in 2014. 12.22% of these homes were bought by foreigners – again up 9% on Q1 2014. UK nationals top the non-Spanish buyer chart, unsurprising given their long-term affection for Spain and the current favourable pound-euro exchange rate, followed by French, Germans, Belgians, Swedes and Russians. The Registrars also reported a 2.65% rise in average price per square metre over the last 12 months. Spanish property portal Idealista concurs citing the Balearics amongst the top three Spanish regions for sharp price rises in April. “More sales at higher prices, this is exactly the news we want to hear in the Spanish property market,” says Alejandra Vanoli Managing Director of Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty. “The Balearic Islands reported some of the lowest house price falls in Spain during the six-year crisis and are now posting the fastest and highest rises. We expected this as the Islands are supported by huge numbers of tourists, a multi-national house buying population – Calvia alone has 19,000 non-Spanish residents from 100 different countries – and a strong appeal to the high-end with luxury hotels, Villa, Vista Alegre, Ibiza, restaurants, beach clubs, golf courses and marinas supporting a growing superyacht industry. 2.75 million euros, This year we are selling more houses than ever and for us in Mallorca, the future is very bright.” www.ibiza-sothebysrealty.com Glynn Evans, Managing Director of the Ibiza Sotheby’s International Realty office shares Alejandra’s enthusiasm, “Over recent months Ibiza has received an unprecedented number of positive mentions in international media by respected journalists. This beautiful Island is becoming Penthouse, Palma de Mallorca, 4 million euros, discovered by the world’s most discerning and investment is pouring in to secure its future. An www.mallorca-sothebysrealty.com abundance of luxury has already landed: exciting culinary business ventures from multi-Michelinstarred chefs, supercar and powerboat championships, 70-metre-plus berths for the finest private megayachts and several new unbelievably cool five-star hotels. I am certain the best is yet to come”. Country House, Esporlas, At the end of April, the Bank of Spain confidently declared an end to the Mallorca, 5.25 million euros, property crisis. Its Director of Studies, José Luis Malo de Molina, said that www.mallorca-sothebysrealty.com “the adjustment in the housing sector, in principle, is complete” and “the process of price adjustment, in principle, has already bottomed out”. In short, Spain is now in the business of recovery. Supporting José Luis Malo de Molina’s claims is a strong increase in mortgages. As reported by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics in April, property loans in the Balearics were up 36.2% in February 2015 over the previous year (way above the national average of 29.2%) and unemployment, despite remaining the highest in the EU after Greece, has been shaved to the tune of 351,285 people in the last 12 months – the fastest drop on record. Even the construction sector is hiring again, as the number of building permits issued also goes on the increase.

Stunning Stone

his gorgeous Arabescato marble worktop would make a statement in any kitchen. And if you are prepared to seal it regularly, wipe any spills as soon as they occur and like the idea of it developing character with age, then it is definitely for you. If the idea of a worktop that will develop an antique patina as it ages with you is not to your liking, then consider granite or quartz which are much harder wearing and stain resistant. If you do decide on marble, we recommend a honed finish as it will be easier to live with and still display the unique natural veining to enhance your kitchen. When choosing which sort of stone to use for your kitchen counters, you will need to take into account the colour and style of your kitchen and whether you want a uniform look or prefer the sort of variations in tone and markings that you get with natural stone. The best way to choose the stone for your worktop is to go and look at different types of stone, ideally in as large a piece as possible. stoneCIRCLE’s Newbury Showroom is an ideal place to start. It has a large indoor gallery with displays of the biggest selection of full size stone slabs in the South East. Here you can view granite, marble, limestone and quartz among other types of stone and you can get advice from the expert staff about what stone would best suit your particular project, be it a kitchen worktop or marble bathroom. There are also displays of products that have been made out of the different types of stone to help you visualise what can be done in this beautiful adaptable material. In praise of Japan’s Garden Style

102 the riverside journals

Anyone who has been fortunate enough to visit a Japanese garden cannot fail to be impressed by the incredible attention to design and detail deployed in the creation of the garden.

Happy Gardening! Richard www.richardlucasgardens.com

I

n Japan people have been designing and building gardens for nigh on 1,500 years, and it is believed that the original Japanese designers took their influences from Chinese gardens where garden design has been going on even longer! I think that these startling facts serve to remind us, that here in England, despite what we may think, we are in fact relative newcomers to the high altar of garden design. Meticulous planning and execution are the hallmarks of any Japanese garden and they do have several standard types of garden that dominate the whole world of garden design in Japan. First of all, there are the Rock Gardens. These are also called Zen Gardens and were originally designed and built for Buddhist Monks to give them a peaceful sanctuary where they could meditate or sit in quiet contemplation. In these gardens there would be no water. Lakes or flowing rivers would be symbolically represented by sand or combed gravel. Standing rocks would often be used to represent mountains. Then there are Tea Gardens. These were obviously designed and built specifically to provide a suitable place for the very important tea ceremony. These gardens would be typified by a moist winding path or stepping stones, leading directly to the tea house where the ceremony would take place. The pathway would often be lit by customary stone lanterns. There would be an outer and an inner garden and, before being admitted to the teahouse, visitors and guests would wash their hands and mouth using a wooden ladle from a traditional stone basin so that they are suitably cleansed before partaking in the sacred ceremony. Stroll Gardens are perhaps the most similar to our gardens, in so far as the visitor to the garden strolls or promenades their way through the garden with various recreations and representations of landscapes being revealed to them as they walk along. These gardens were mainly built by wealthy individuals such as noblemen and merchants and were attached to their grand houses or villas which themselves were styled on the original architecture of the teahouse. Courtyard Gardens were designed as small garden landscapes that occupied the interior courtyard of various types of residence. These gardens were meant to be viewed and not used. They were for visual pleasure and could be viewed from above or from the same level dependent on the architecture of the surrounding residence. Whatever type of garden was to be designed, the same qualities were employed in creating all of them and that is detail, detail and detail! Great care and consideration would be given to various aspects such as orientation, the direction from which water entered the garden and the direction in which it left the garden, appropriate use of stones, sand and gravel and how to employ the sometimes limited use of plant life. In the Tea Garden, for example, there would be no bright flowers as this would serve as a distraction to the calming of the mind in readiness for the tea ceremony. In the Stroll Gardens great thought would be given to “borrowing” from existing landscape and scenery from beyond the garden. In any Japanese garden nothing happens by accident, every little detail is designed and intended to be. Despite this total level of control in design and execution, Japanese gardens can and do appear to be natural and organic. They are a pleasure to behold and sometimes a bewilderment to comprehend given the design, the detail and the immense patience which has gone into creating and indeed maintaining them. Fortunately, nowadays we do not have to make the long journey to Japan to see excellent examples of Japanese gardens. There is an inspiring Japanese Landscape at Kew Botanical Gardens and I would suggest that if you want to become more informed about the design of gardens of Japan then this would be a very good place to start. On a personal level I have never designed a purist Japanese garden but I was once commissioned by a client to design a garden with a ‘Japanese flavour.’ The existing garden was a relatively small space measuring 4m by 10m and was considerably untended and overgrown. This was rather fortunate as it allowed me to start with a clean canvas. As my ideas for the garden developed I was able to put forward a proposal to the client which was accepted and thus work commenced. Key elements were to be a simple colour palette and limited materials. Gravel would be used, water and fish would be used and an example of cloud pruned ‘Ilex Crenata’ would be strategically planted to be viewed from inside the house. All of these things would be recognisable elements of Japanese style. If you like the idea of Japanese flavour rather that full blown authentic Japanese creation then perhaps you can be inspired by this.

All aboard at The Blue Boat!

anager, Nina, with her hand-picked crew of friendly and attentive staff have pulled off quite a coup with the opening of The Blue Boat, a new bar and restaurant on the banks of the Thames, right on the Hammersmith/ Fulham border. Taking its name from the elite crews who represent Oxford and Cambridge universities in the famous annual boat race, we visited for the first time on a rather grey and chilly evening on the eve of the May Bank Holiday weekend but even though the sun wasn’t shining the place was still packed out. Twenty somethings out for some Friday night shenanigans; thirty somethings with young kids in tow; mixed in with a selection of groups of suits, young professionals plus a few couples – and all were interacting in total harmony! A true feat of community! Expect to find this place totally heaving on a warm summer’s evening, with the clientele spilling out onto the large, marine inspired terrace adjoining the Thames Path. Inside there is a choice of booths or small tables to dine at and a very buzzy bar area. Outside the bleached wood with jaunty cushions would certainly be very appealing on a warm sunny day or evening. The ambience is nautical and contemporary; one could almost be on a pleasure cruiser gently meandering down the river, instead of sitting on its banks. A new west London flagship for brewery, Fuller’s, the beer menu certainly looked impressive with an extensive range of old favourites peppered with some interesting specials. The wine list too had representations of all the usual suspects plus a few more offbeat numbers. Our knowledgeable waitress told us that most of the wine is sourced directly from growers and is exclusive to them. We settled for a crisp and aromatic Sancerre, and a fruity and full-bodied Malbec, which proved to be the perfect accompaniment to some pretty delicious food. We also liked the water jug on the table without being asked for! The food is different enough to pique interest but not too off the wall as to be intimidating. We started with beef fillet carpaccio with celeriac and sweet onion, and tuna tartare with avocado, sesame and chilli dressing followed by mains of grilled lemon sole with Jersey Royals, fennel and radish salad, and roasted lamp rump with peppers, aubergines, onions and caper and mint jus, with a side order of delicious crispy chips. Amazingly, after a bit of a break, we made room for puddings too and were very glad we had! The vanilla crème brulée with lemon biscuit was awesome, especially shared with a proper British cheeseboard. Everything was delicious, and beautifully presented: definite compliments to the chef from us! As we left we noticed they also did brunch – from full English to Eggs Benedict, to French toast, bacon and maple syrup – yum! What a perfect location to watch the boats chugging down the river with the papers on a lazy weekend morning, we thought, as we made plans to come back… Distillery Wharf, Parrs Way, London W6 9GD 020 3092 2090 www.blueboat.co.uk

Greet, Meet and Eat at the Windsor Grill

106 the riverside journals

D

avid Wilby, Chef Patron and owner of Windsor Grill, welcomes me with a huge smile on a sunny spring morning. Through a strong arched door, reminiscent of it’s pub history (it was built in 1720) I discover a welcoming, smart and warm restaurant. David is very relaxed and puts me at ease by offering a hot warming English tea. He tells me he left school at 16 and after writing 30 job applications he secured a position in a Brewery Hotel in Warrington – probably the worst job ever. David elaborates on his career for a while worked with Peter Grifffiths MBE, at the Manor Hotel in Coventry. Stringfellows next (before it becomes a strip club). He learns French Cuisine at the Manor and Nouvelle Cuisine at Stringfellows. In 1983 he moves to ‘Ménage à Trois’, in Knightsbridge, part owned by Antony Worrall Thompson. They form a fabulous relationship, which lasts to this day. Head Chef David is sent by Antony to his newly opened New York restaurant to sort out menus (and party!). It’s a great time for David who decides to spend three months in the States where he learns to cook Cajun Creole food. It has made such a mark on him that his current menu has hints of the style. David offers a welcoming environment at Windsor Grill, with a relaxed atmosphere, well priced fresh food: he wants to emulate the idea of the friendly local. The restaurant is open six nights a week and the last Sunday of each month, has 36 settings on the ground floor, 14 downstairs and 12 upstairs. The menu is meat based, with beef sourced from Scotland, at least 35 days hung. The starters are generally fish based and sourced from his next-door neighbour the fishmonger and coastal deliveries. His lamb is English too. The wine is also sourced specially for his restaurant food, meaty reds from Spain or Bordeaux. David confirms that he tries to source his food locally and as much in season as possible, such as peas and asparagus. It’s slightly different when it comes to strawberries as ‘Eton Mess’ is on the menu all year round with a homemade strawberry sorbet at the bottom. I guess that makes sense when the famous college is just a few miles away. Why Grill food I ask? After working for current CEO of Planet Hollywood, Robert Earl, David did two years at Oriel in Belgravia as Executive Chef, then opened ‘WIZ’ in Notting Hill with Worrall Thompson which became Notting Grill. Notting Grill were the likes of Dustin Hoffman came to eat). There, the pair offered ‘grazing menus’ based on the idea of tapas food. Little by little more meat was introduced to meet trend changes, and that was the start of grill food, his passion, that he offers now in Windsor. I ask him who his greatest influences are and he settles on Peter Griffiths at the Manor Hotel who pointed him in the right direction, Paul Prudhomme in New Orleans who introduced him to Cajun Creole food and his very good friend, Antony Worrall Thompson. Lastly I ask David if he has ever had Royal visitors at the Grill? Alas, no, but he has recently cooked and hosted the England Rugby Team who were extremely polite and absolutely loved the menu. He has also welcomed the likes Glenn Hoddle and David Furnish. 65 St Leonards Rd, Windsor, Berks SL4 3BX 01753 859658 www.windsorgrill.co.uk

Vietnam by Abena Bailey

Why do Nam

There is a difference between a person who wants to go on holiday and one who wants to travel and explore and if you put yourself in the latter category then Vietnam could be the adventure you desire. Tourist numbers in the south Asian country have been decreasing in the last year but that is no reason to strike it off your bucket list. It is a stimulating country with an intense atmosphere. I visited the south and discovered the capital Ho Chi Minh is a bustling place overloaded with motorbikes, shabby architecture and street sellers. One of the fastest growing Asian economies, Vietnam has a feel of a developing country scrabbling into a new economic status.

How to spend your money Good prices have to be haggled for and for getting around I found it best to use Vinasun taxis that have meters and don’t charge unfair prices. The markets are a great way to see people go about their day to day lives. The best buys were Vietnamese coffee and hammocks and best bought away from tourist concentrated areas. If you want to take a trip tours are big business for local operators but they come in a range of qualities. It is just as easy to catch buses or trains to popular destinations, such as Dalat and the Mekong Delta, and then visit floating markets, waterfalls and coconut factories with a local hotel.

How to take it in The problem for tourists lies with the quality of service, litter, lack of information and, of course, culture shock. This is a society where people ride on motorbikes piled high with goods, passengers or even animals; they will offer you a nip of whisky from a bottle with a real cobra inside, and they eat dog. If you open your mind to this fascinating part of the world you will get a rewarding insight into a way of life far from western ideals. The country is shaped like a reptile with a fat head that snakes down from the borders of China and Laos in its north to the tip of Cambodia in its south. If you want to see it all you need at least three weeks to do it comfortably.

How to cross the road The top of my list of things to do was sampling the street food, which is regarded the best in the world. First I had to cross the road. The Vietnamese traffic has a fear factor of terrifying. With up to six or seven lanes of motorbikes and cars haphazardly darting to and fro, it made the supposedly simple task of getting to the other side an adventure in itself. To avoid standing on the side of the road all day, I took my cue from the locals and mirrored what they did. I stepped out and kind of blended in with the slow moving vehicles taking my journey one lane at a time. I didn’t make any sudden movements and stayed calm and, although I’m not religious, I prayed a little bit too.

How to eat street food My destination was Van Kiep Street where street food treats are usually in abundance. I was not disappointed. The pavements were filled with people barbecuing, frying and boiling. The menus offered everything from classic beef noodle soup called Pho, meat and spice stuffed baguette sandwiches called Banh Mi and crispy omelettes. I approached a family who were barbecuing meats and vegetables on skewers, gave them a big smile and began my communication. I cannot speak Vietnamese so I pointed at what I wanted and then held up fingers indicating how many. It worked, and soon I was perched on a 10-inch high plastic stool savouring tender pork and al dente okra marinated in a chilli spice blend. As I sat people-watching, hawkers emerged from the crowd offering me drinks, books and souvenirs. It was definitely a dress down experience – simple sandals, denim shorts and a t-shirt. Handbags are out while exploring the streets of Vietnam because bag snatching is rife. Most tourists use bumbags, pockets or rucksacks, all of which I consider fashion tragedies but function on this occasion was more important.

How to do it high class

113 the riverside journals

There did come a time when I wanted to dress up and wear high heels. In need of an evening of elegance there was only one place I wanted to be – Lam Son Square. A stone’s throw from Louis Vuitton, Cartier and Burberry, and the longtime home to Saigon Opera House, this area has been Ho Chi Minh’s centre of glamour since the French occupation and is the best place to admire the old colonial buildings. The opera house is one of the most beautiful. My viewing spot was from inside L’Opera Café, which is in the grand lobby of the Caravelle Hotel. The Caravelle has been the epitome of prestige since it opened in the city in 1959 and became the home of many governmental embassies. Today the reputation of the 335-room grand hotel remains intact. It has recently been refurbished. In keeping with its chic European style it now includes the café and champagne corner, making it the spot to meet. High tea choices include English, Vietnamese or vegetarian with or without a glass of Veuve Cliquot. The English selection of cakes and savoury bites included some delightful classics such as beef pie and salmon bagels while the Vietnamese option treated me to small bites of traditional fare. After that it was onto the big performance which was the Ao Show. A spectacle it truly was. I was taken on a journey through the urbanisation of Vietnam – a story which is told through acrobatics, balancing acts and modern dance. It was awe inspiring and thought provoking but then, that’s Nam.

Katy Dunne British rising tennis star

F

or many years British tennis remained in the doldrums, but with the arrival of players like Andy Murray and Heather Watson the future is looking bright. On her way up the rankings is Britain’s No.4, Katy Dunne. When in the UK, Katy trains at two centres: Halton Tennis Club with Mike James and Dom King, and Northwood (Riverside) JTC where she works with Alan Jones and Jo Durie (former World No.4). I caught up with Katy recently to ask her about her life on the professional tennis circuit. At what age did you start playing tennis? I started playing tennis at 3, because my brother used to play and I always had to go to the club with him!

Anyone interested in sponsoring Katy can contact her at katydunnetennis@gmail.com

Who was your role model when growing up? I used to love Ana Ivanovic but now I’m more for Maria Sharapova because her mentality is so good.

What sacrifices have you had to make in order to pursue a career as a professional tennis player? I made the decision to leave school at the end of year 9 which was really difficult for me because I loved school (more the social part). And then there’s all the parties you miss! What is your training regime to stay in top shape? I train 4-5 hours a day(usually 3-3.5 hours of tennis and 1-2 of fitness) from Monday to Friday and I do an hour of fitness on Saturday mornings! Which is your favourite tournament and why? I think my favourite tournament was French Open Juniors, probably because I had a very close 3-set match in the 2nd round which hauled in a massive crowd so the atmosphere was awesome. I also got to have a interview on ITV with John Inverdale and we were using the same changing rooms and restaurants as the professionals so Nadal and Federer would just saunter past and almost brush shoulders with you. Which surface do you feel more confident on and why? I’d probably say grass. My game suits it pretty well but then I do love a hard court. That is what I train on, day in, day out. What has been the high point of your career so far? The high point was qualifying for Birmingham WTA where I had some of my best wins and took a set off a top 50 player. It was also surreal being in the same draw as my idol when I was younger...Ana Ivanovic!! Outside of your busy schedule what do you do to relax? Lying on the sofa watching a lot of TV haha! Seeing my friends, cooking and trying to find something fun to do like paint balling which I still haven’t got round to doing.

Junior French Open Roland Garros

Although Katy has some support from the LTA, she will need further financial backing as she moves up the rankings and travels around the world to higher tournaments. She would very much like to pay for her own travelling coach so that she could be trained ‘on the road’. A place in this year’s Wimbledon main draw would help her to achieve this and she is working hard towards that goal.

Almost A

ll the services are personally tested by the two founders, Caroline Frankel and Michelle de Biolley; two long-time friends who have in common their discerning taste, their quest for quality, their epicurean approach to life and their passion for interior design. Caroline has styled several homes of friends and friends of friends whilst Michelle has a knack for discovering finds. French and Belgian respectively they have both lived in London for over 25 years. Following on from professional careers in Branding and Executive Search, they were eager to start a business together and felt there was a gap in the market for excellent services that were reasonably priced; Almost Essential was born. The site currently offers over 90 services that cover the following categories: home maintenance: plumber, electrician, furniture restorers, IT specialists, handymen, gardeners...; home decoration: interior designers, upholsterer, curtain maker, furniture maker, architect...; home management: PAs by the hour, moving specialist, household budget optimiser etc...; entertaining: chefs, waiters, florists, event organisers etc…; health and beauty: beauty therapists, masseurs, personal trainers, specialist doctors…; other Essentials: services that don’t fit any of the other categories but which Caroline and Michelle feel are worth sharing: educational specialists, cultural services, travel experts etc... It also offers some products that complement the services like natural and effective beauty products or the most effective natural stain remover, as well as a great selection of unusual presents like 3D designs of London’s landmark buildings, or a silver coated ice cream tub… The site is targeted at anyone who seeks quality and does not have the time to do the research themselves. Access to service providers is very easy and done directly through the site by either ringing them or messaging them. There is small annual fee of £40 to pay which is refundable as soon as a subscriber has spent £400 with the services recommended on the website. Almost Essential generates its revenues through charging commission to its service providers. These commissions are negotiated upfront and never added to the client’s bills. So whether one goes through Almost Essential or direct to the service provider, the price is the same. Monitoring the quality of the services is very important to the two of them; customers are encouraged to post their reviews of the service providers they have used. These are not ratings but qualitative reviews which can be accessed by all subscribers. Aminimum of two new services are included each month.
