Vidal believed in the importance of inner health and its impact on outer appearance, particularly in relation to hair, a principle that has underpinned six decades of colour and cutting expertise. The result is a display of radiance that shows hair’s effortless inner health and vitality. “A strong cut and colour technique means the final result is very simple. At Sassoon Salon we understand the beauty in that. Some things are supposed to be innately cool and effortless, like a Sassoon haircut,” says Mark Hayes, Sassoon International Creative Director.
The Statement Style Blonde hair adds radiance to the face and is full of optimism. “Blonde is timeless, I would always blend a bespoke combination of tones together to create a perfect shade that’s true to my client’s needs and personality,” says Alliah Batterip Senior Colour Director. “A side-sweep fringe adds drama to the classic bob and is ideal for creating a Rock Chic look. It works best on hair with a very gentle natural movement. Like all great design these shapes are essentially timeless and offer a chic and stylish approach to your new season look,” says Lothar Weismann Senior Creative Director. The Instant Update The Radiant colour palette blends warm tones to support and enhance intrinsic shine, offering subtle gradients of brown through to blonde, accented with tones of mulberry red, true red and copper. “Darker tones are strategically placed at the base of the hair to create three dimensional depth, with the lighter top colours to enhance shine to its fullest potential,” says Alliah Batterip Senior Colour Drector. “For a sexy, gamine look, add a small amount of Sassoon Professional, Texture Refine evenly throughout your hair and mould into the desired shape. This look is easy to achieve as the hair should be dishevelled and not look perfect,” says Lothar Weismann Senior Creative Director. The Timeless Classic Healthy hair gets its strength and shine from a combination of proteins and vitamins, just like our skin. “An intensive treatment instantly smooths each strand providing renewed definition and shine, boosting elasticity, giving hair suppleness and bounce,” says Alliah Batterip Senior Colour Director. “The perfect centre parting is easily achieved on freshly washed hair. While the hair is still wet, use a tail-comb to draw a straight line from the front hairline to the back. It has to be absolutely poker straight and there should be no strays. Each side should be super smooth, so if your hair is thick and prone to frizz, apply Sassoon Professional, Halo Hydrate before you blow-dry,” says Lothar Weismann Senior Creative Director.

The perfect collection for Mountain Performance and Off-Course
www.odlo.com

H
ighline Mountain Performance stands for products that meet the uncompromisingly high demands on the piste and in deep snow. In the coming winter the Highline collection is shaped by the highest functionality while being low in weight, by a modern design with clear lines and hightech materials. Using own innovations, including logic windproof, logic waterproof, f-dry and effect by Odlo, resulted in a diverse, functional collection. In addition, complementing materials, such as GoreTex®, Primaloft® and Pertex®, are used. One part of the autumn-winter 2015 Highline collection was developed in cooperation with Odlo Ambassador Jon Olson. As one of the best freestyle skiers in the world, he assisted the design team, giving important impulses and contributing his keen sense for the latest trends. Besides technical fabrics and materials, such as Primaloft®, down certified with the Traumpass seal will be used in autumn-winter 2015. With the SKI COCOON, Odlo presents a down jacket that guarantees style, functionality and the best thermal insulation on the piste. Ski-specific details such as the detachable powder skirt, a ski pass pocket on the forearm or the adjustable hood clearly show that the jacket is designed to be worn in the snow. In addition, the SKI COCOON is windproof and water repellent thanks to Odlo’s cutting-edge technology, logic by Odlo. The perfect complement to the SKI COCOON jacket are the ski pants SPIRIT made from waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex® material. The versatility of down is also demonstrated in the midlayers: The ultra-light HELIUM COCOON insulation jacket with down filling, the windproof, extremely light and sturdy Pertex Quantum® and the trusted “body mapping” concept provides reliable protection in the coldest weather. Stretch inserts under the arms provide additional freedom of movement and temperature control. A trendy camouflage design rounds off the entire Mountain Performance collection. An active lifestyle is reflected not only in the sportswear but also in the outfits that we wear every day. For autumn-winter 2015, Odlo presents as part of the HIGHLINE collection an Off-Course line that is designed for everyday needs. The new products, which range from the classic outer layer to the midlayer and shirts and pants, are shaped by a cool design, comfortable cuts and youthful colours. The materials used appeal not only through their natural touch and look but also through their high functionality. As with the Mountain Performance collection, real down plays an important role and determines the style of the Off-Course collection. The COCOON X and the AIR COCOON jackets provide warmth and style both in the city and in the mountains. All-over prints in modern camouflage and earthy colours, such as shades of dark purple and navy, in addition to classic sports colours, are important and give the high-quality clothes a trendy look. The parka HAVEN for women and men is absolutely eye-catching and reliably protects against wind and cold. It is made of a unique material mix consisting of functional polyester and cotton. Thanks to the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish, it is permanently water repellent. Feminine details, such as discreet logos, darts in the back and a fitted cut create deliberate differences between the models for women and for men. Together with the pants and the hoody of the SPOT-ON line, the parka HAVEN is a protective and fashionable companion in the winter. The accessories of the Highline collection are indispensable when it gets colder outside. They are the small but exquisite detail necessary for being protected from the cold, wind and wet conditions. Whether the focus is on enjoying the outdoors or athletic performance, the accessories provide comfort from head to toe. Warming hats have been redesigned and matched with the individual looks. The focus is on hats, headbands and beanies with facemasks. The line includes models in the popular hand- knitted look and models in ribbed and fine knit. New this season are warming bobble hats that not only complement the individual looks but also appeal through clever details such as a detachable bobble, which makes the hats very versatile. The hats of the Highline collection also appeal through their particular good fit and details, such as inner fleece lining, in some models. The hats, beanies, headbands and facemasks are even more functional and protect reliably from cold temperatures.

Whether you are going for a weekend break or a full on, 10-day holiday, skiing and snowboarding in the Alps is one of the best things to do this season.
A
skiing holiday doesn’t need to break the bank, there are plenty of special deals and cheaper – but still spectacular – resorts that cater for bigger families in self-catering chalets. There are so many choice resorts and slopes in Europe for you to pick from, ranging from family-friendly, relaxed hotels to wild offpiste adventures. The French Alps are home to some of the most varied resorts in the world, which makes them the best choice for this winter! With its array of breathtaking resorts and views, France features an amazing variety of choices whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced skier. Courchevel is one of the most famous for its excellent slopes and it caters for skiers of all levels. The best thing about this resort is that it’s a great place to bring your kids and spend some quality family time while skiing on some the most beautiful slopes in Europe. Not so into skiing but the family is? No problem, there are plenty of things to do other than hitting the slopes. There are plenty of music festivals and clubs across the Alps to keep you entertained, the biggest of which is the Snowbombing festival in Austria, which is famous for its fancy dress-themed street party, and Arctic disco. Many of the resorts have some amazing, luxury spas and hot tubs for you to relax in a truly beautiful setting. And if spa is not your thing, you can simply relax with a glass of wine or hot chocolate in the resort living rooms. And for the foodies out there, plenty of Alpine resorts feature top-notch restaurants, with Zermatt in Switzerland even offering gourmet-themed guided tours. Chedi Andermatt, a stunning hotel nestled in the foot of the Swiss Alps, offers you the skiing experience in true style. It features a walk-in cheese cellar, wine and cigar lounge, luxury spa and even a personal ski butler who will warm your boots and get your equipment ready for you. But for those of you looking to spend all your time on the slopes, whether you are a seasoned pro or have never set foot on a slope before, there is a range of resorts to cater for everyone, and many that offer beginners’ lessons from toddlers to adults. La Plagne in France is one of the country’s most popular resorts. It’s ideal for families and beginners, with more than 100 easy-to-intermediate runs for you to learn the ins and out of the sport. Serre Chevalier, which has 250 km of great slopes, is one of the best resorts for intermediate skiers. Smaller and less modern than other French resorts, it offers a quieter place where you can practise and take in the beautiful landscape. And if you want a holiday in the snow with your four legged babies, you are in luck. Chalet ski holiday specialist VIP SKI has recently announced that you can bring your dog with you to a handful of their chalets. Your canine companion will receive a brand new ball and special doggy treats on arrival. They will be able to explore the resorts and slopes at your side so they can enjoy the outdoors too. Whether you are a regular on the snow or it is your first time even seeing snow, the Alps is where you want to be this winter. Add sipping on a hot chocolate and sitting by a roaring fire after a day of hitting the slopes onto that, and you have the perfect getaway.

A beast of a pie, it’s made with wild British venison, free range British smoked bacon, beans and scotch bonnet chillies, slowcooked in BrewDog’s Dead Pony Club ale. Take a bite and the distinctive spice hit you’ll get comes from Pieminister founder Tristan’s oncesecret spice mix. Seriously hot, this is venison with a kick. Beer & Deer is available from the 14th of September, just in time for the Rugby World Cup. Get yours in Pieminister’s restaurants, market stalls and pie pubs nationwide – they’re great on their own or try with your favourite Pieminister sides. Brassware Trends C.P. Hart

B
rassware should be a tactile pleasure to use for years and years. Poor quality brassware quickly discolours and seizes up, and it’s amazing how noticeable this can be to, say, a potential house buyer. Finishes like chrome will always stand the test of time and will never date. However, as long as your product is reputable and of a high quality you shouldn’t encounter any problems based on finish alone. When it comes to brassware, think about who is going to be using the space and whether you want it to be simply functional or somewhere that you want to spend a lot of time. Do you want something more traditional or maybe something contemporary? With the lines between contemporary and traditional design becoming more and more blurred, an emerging ‘Cool Classics’ trend is becoming more evident. Classic looks have been updated with modern finishes and traditional products are being coupled with new age materials. Suppliers such as Samuel Heath are beginning to launch and develop more traditional taps in varying finishes and handles contributing to the ‘Cool-Classic’ look – including partnerships with traditional British brands like Royal Crown Derby. In recent years brassware has been dominated by chic, minimalist designs, with chrome mirrored finishes that almost invite you to look elsewhere in the bathroom. The emergence of exciting new finishes, complementing bolder designs, has reignited this category. Different plating techniques can produce pale blondes and warm ambers, or at the other end of the spectrum, dense matt black. The choice on offer has exploded – Hansgrohe now offer many of their ranges in 15 distinct finishes. Their new Citterio E tap in brushed rose gold is warm and tactile, while in black chrome feels intensely luxurious. Bathroom designers are also responding to the demand for a more urban aesthetic, inspired by the reclamation of industrial buildings for residential use and the exposure of construction materials – polished concrete, steel frames, functional pipework – in modern city living. Some of these designs have a vintage feel, such as Lefroy Brook’s 1920 brassware range, which is now available in a matt black finish. Other designs that draw influence from this industrial aesthetic include JEE-O’s brassware range, which mimics the pipework found in period/ converted properties, and will be coming to the UK this November. We also noticed recently that designers have begun to reject the more functional requirements of austerity and once again embrace flair and opulence in their brassware designs. Specifically, we’ve found that this has begun to take the form of luxurious detailing – elegant, crafted touches rather than raw ‘bling’. Axor’s Starck V, still a new product and one of the most dramatic designs of recent years, has been beautifully enhanced by diamond-cut engraving. Lefroy Brook’s 1940 brassware in black has also been inlaid with burnished chrome. We also love Dornbracht’s new CL1 brassware, a range far more exciting than its name suggests. Especially glamorous in ‘Structure 1’ form, with handles in matt nickel with machinefaceted layers. Other new ranges that have also caught our eye include dramatic and luxurious designs from Petracer’s – an artisanal Italian bathroom brand, which specialises in gleaming metallic and marble designs. In addition, this year JEE-O collaborated with Dutch fashion designer Bjorn van den Berg to create the ‘izi go’ – a limited edition range of showers for the truly fashion-conscious. Characterised by an on-trend matt black finish, the shower head is embellished with dark grey Swarovski faceted elements for a distinctive, sparkling effect.

A secret retreat of luxury riverside living

significant heritage site located in the Isleworth Riverside Conservation Area in the London Borough of Hounslow is set to become home to a stunning collection of new properties. This unique development will provide a secret retreat of luxury riverside living set within acres of parkland and hidden behind the historic listed wall skirting Richmond Road, running between Old Isleworth and Richmond Lock. Fitzroy Gate combines a selection of luxury townhouses together with careful restoration and conversion of the Grade II listed White House and Chapel into apartments and houses set within a walled and gated estate. The development, a collaboration between St James and Beechcroft, will transform this historic riverside setting into 39 brand new four, five and six-bedroom townhouses by awardwinning developer, St James, and a mix of new build and converted two and three-bedroom apartments and houses by Beechcroft. Driving through the elaborate wrought iron gates and into the walled leafy estate, purchasers will enjoy a sense of arriving home to a tranquil haven, away from the hustle and bustle of London life. The new St James properties will be set amongst landscaped gardens and will feature a variety of architectural styles complemented by high quality fixtures and fittings carefully chosen by interior designer, Laura Hammett. Purchasers will be able to choose from a selection of different room layouts to suit their individual requirements.
Fitzroy Gate launches this November from the Sales and Marketing Suite in Richmond Road, Old Isleworth, TW7. Contact the Sales team for further information on 020 3811 2596 or register your interest at www.FitzroyGate.co.uk

Many of the town houses offer wide spacious entrance hallways and staircases, first floor reception rooms, and open plan kitchen/dining/living spaces flooded with light. The larger houses, occupying a prime location and set within The Crescent, will include separate studies, top floor entertainment room with doors leading to outside space and first floor terraces looking out over the landscaped gardens and down to the banks of the River Thames. Every home boasts an interior-designed bespoke fitted kitchen with fully integrated Siemens or Miele appliances and feature lighting to wall units and shelves. Many homes also include full width bi-fold doors leading to the rear garden patio and private garden. These stylish homes also benefit from two off-street car parking spaces. Upstairs, fully tiled, hotel styled bathrooms feature white sanitaryware, with Hansgrohe polished chrome brassware and bespoke integrated storage with mirrored doors and feature lighting. Flooring is included throughout, combining a mixture of timber and porcelain tiling to ground floors and carpets to all upper floors plus full height doors including feature grooves to living areas. This secluded location has long been sought after, not only by the aristocratic and wealthy in previous years, but more recently by professionals and young families due to its tranquil riverside location and proximity to excellent schools. Richmond and Hounslow Borough’s Private and Independent schools are some of the best in the country. Fitzroy Gate also benefits from good transport links. Regular train services are in close proximity with Isleworth and Syon Lane stations offering regular trains into London Waterloo, taking just over 30 minutes. Osterley Underground Station, on the Piccadilly Line, gives fast access into Central London and a direct link to Heathrow. There is also easy road access to the A316 and A4, the M3, M4 and M25.
Crocker’s Folly

ith the Festive Season nearly upon us and our thoughts turning to lovely restaurants and venues to visit for Christmas lunches, parties etc, it seemed fitting for us to enjoy another evening out at Crocker’s Folly, nestled as it is in a residential area of St John’s Wood and standing proud on the corner of Aberdeen Place. On this Saturday evening the bar was buzzing and the two restaurant rooms were quickly filling up. This unique London venue really does have it all with its charm, and its beautiful chandeliers lighting the ornate patterned ceilings and the intricate carved woodwork – highlighting the richness of its décor. I can just imagine what it would be like to celebrate Christmas in such an impressive setting. The 1898 Bar and the two dining rooms were certainly alive with atmosphere, and the Lord’s Restaurant – named of course after the neighbouring famous cricket ground. We chose a glass of Prosecco whilst looking over the menu choices. The food is prepared by the amazing Head Chef Pierre Simonin and his team, the menu choices on offer include an à la carte menu, a lunch and Sunday lunch menu, and all of the Josper grill dishes from the à la carte menu are served with triple cooked chips and a choice of sauce. The Sunday lunch choices are fabulous and include: Roast Sirloin of British Beef, Roast Pork Loin, Classic Roasted Leg of Lamb, Free Range Roasted Chicken; wow all of my favourites on here – next time I will ensure a Sunday visit.
The lunchtime menu is extensive with choices of salads, to light bites and sharing platters plus a set menu of two courses for £18 or three courses for £25. This seems very good value for the fine standard of food that Pierre and his team create. I was also very impressed by the children’s menu with main dishes from £4-£6 and featuring homemade fish fingers – what more could a child ask for – served with mushy peas and tartar sauce, and let’s not forget the triple cooked chips. How could we forget these chips, I still remember them from my last visit here! This impressive beautiful establishment also offers overnight accommodation, with three luxury upstairs apartments available to rent on a short-term let for both business and private functions. It is a fabulous venue for a wedding, ideal for the bridal party, and decorated and furnished to a very high standard. It is ideal for private functions, such as birthdays, as well as business meetings/seminars. Crocker’s Folly can cater for your every need. Please contact Pierre and his dedicated team to discuss your requirements for that special occasion and to find out more about forthcoming Christmas events and promotions.

Bronx
Cocktails Created in New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel at the beginning of the previous century, according to Difford’s Guide, it is the first cocktail to use fruit juice. Dry and bitter is still a challenge to our palates. To make a perfect Bronx use premium dry gin such as citrusy Whitley Neill or Cotswolds Dry Gin with equal parts of dry and sweet vermouth. Shake with a dash of orange bitters or add an egg white depending on your preference. In my recipe I also use more flavoursome Sanguinello oranges.
50ml premium dry gin 25ml freshly squeezed orange juice 12.5ml dry vermouth 12.5ml sweet vermouth Orange zest twist and maraschino cocktail cherry to garnish
El Diablo
Shake all ingredients with ice and pour into chilled Martini glass.
El Diablo – ‘The Devil’ – is an iconic tequila-based cocktail which supposedly originates from 1940s California. The intense sweetness of the blackcurrant crème de cassis takes some of the bite out of the spiciness of ginger beer and both fare well with tequila.
50ml tequila reposado 12.5ml crème de cassis 12.5ml freshly squeezed lime juice Ginger beer Lime peel to garnish
You can meet Hugo D’Argantel in The Crown Inn, Old Amersham, where he can meticulously handcraft for you any cocktail using the finest ingredients and fresh herbs from The Crown’s own garden. Photo credits: Matt Johnston 2015

In Celebration of Trees Artist Rod Craig An Exhibition at The Real Wood Gallery, 16-20 Oxford Street, Woodstock, OX20 1TS. October 30 – December 31, 2015

n exciting exhibition ‘In Celebration of Trees’ featuring paintings by artist Rod Craig will launch at The Real Wood Gallery in Woodstock on Friday October 30th with the premier performance of a new musical work written by Chris Baylis for performance by his band tp & woodman, aptly titled ‘In Celebration of Trees’, bringing together a multi-media celebration of wood and trees. The exhibition will continue until 31st December. The work exhibited will include studies of trees throughout the seasons and will feature a number of legendary trees, including the ancient oak tree in the grounds of Blenheim Palace (image 1), believed to be over 800 years old and an ancient mulberry tree in the garden at Cromwell’s House, at 28 High Street Woodstock (image 2). The ancient mulberry tree, still growing and still fruiting in the garden at Cromwell’s House – which was originally an inn - was planted in compliance with a 1603 Act which required inns of a certain standard to plant mulberry trees as a condition of their licence. It is rumoured that this is where Oliver Cromwell stayed during the siege of Woodstock Manor in 1646. Another painting of note is the whimsical watercolour showing the ancient wisteria in all its glory at Chaucer’s House, Woodstock. (image 3)
Rod says: “I’m inspired by a passion for landscape, music and the elements. What interests me most is trying to create a sense of time and place rather than totally representational studies. I’m currently working mainly in Indian ink and watercolour and the paintings in the exhibition reflect that. Another Woodstock building I have painted on many occasions is ‘La Galleria’ always inspiring and beautiful especially when covered in its Virginia creeper.” (image 4) “I paint from my studio in Woodstock. Walks in Blenheim Park provide an endless source of inspiration with the ever changing light over the lake – especially in the early mornings with the sunlight pouring through the trees, or the rooks flying overhead. Autumn in Blenheim presents a glorious opportunity for colour – the wonderful gold and umber shades in the watercolour palette are a delight to work with in an attempt to capture the magic of the season (image 5). I particularly enjoy painting the landscape in winter with the wonderful skeletal trees silhouetted against the sky.” The exhibition will also include photographs of trees by Ian Fraser and 3D forged steel trees by Christopher Townsend, both talented local artists.

truffles has been supplying fresh Italian truffles to the best London department stores, chefs and high-end delis for 28 years. Through their freshly renewed website, www.WTAtruffles.com, they are now bringing the prized fungi to private gourmets’ tables, too. Often referred to as the most expensive food in the world, White Winter Truffles are entirely wild, exceptionally elusive and mightily inebriating. They are always used raw – shaved over simple dishes like Parmesan risotto, buttery hens’ eggs, beef carpaccio or tartare – their floral-garlicky aroma is unmistakable to the nose. Black Truffles, on the other hand, have an earthier, musky aroma that pairs beautifully with foie gras, duck and game birds in general, mushrooms, scallops and lobster. It is with quality and freshness in mind that the company ships preordered truffles from Italy, on the same day as the hunters find them. As Nadia Howell, Director of the company, explains: “This allows us to always deliver the freshest truffles, giving our customers that ‘just-unearthed’ experience”. She concludes: “Truffles are one of the most luxurious food products, and are completely natural. They summarise indulgence and the power of nature and, add to this an incredible simplicity of use, they transform every plate to an effortless masterpiece”. In addition to the fresh truffle service, WTAtruffles.com features truffle tips, recipes and pairing ideas, as well as a variety of truffle cheeses, pastes, oils and other condiments. For Christmas, they are offering their Red Gift Boxes range, which condenses the best of truffles in beautifully presented boxes, both pre-made and personalised.

“…great moment was the children’s first ever trip to meet Father Christmas, who was played to perfection in a grotto at the Rainforest Cafe. This particular Santa had the manner of a kindly country doctor, a calming presence and a kind voice. He also remembered exactly what the children would like for Christmas and the names of their favourite teachers and subjects. We had filled in a questionnaire before our visit, but it was still impressive that he had bothered to learn it. Our three were absolutely delighted – and totally convinced.” Becky Barrow, Daily Mail

The Nags Head Great Missenden
H
eading north out of London, just off the A413, or a short 40-minute train ride on the Chiltern line, sits a quintessentially English village called Great Missenden. The village itself feels small in size, however hosts a bevy of eating and drinking venues; a famous museum – Roald Dahl; a private hospital – The Chiltern; Missenden Abbey, and a multi award-winning Country Inn and Restaurant where we were lucky enough to be invited to sample their food – The Nags Head. Tucked just outside the hustle and bustle of the main village, The Nags Head has more than ample car parking spaces for its size in covers. It also offers overnight accommodation should you wish to sample the extensive list of wine and drinks on offer. When you first walk in it feels like you are in an ‘Olde English’ pub with low beams and a bar stocked full of whiskies Rabbie Burns would have been proud of. Then it hits you and when you look around there is a modern take on the Olde England feel with a light glow of colour giving the perfect mix of warm classic and contemporary modern complementing each other. The staff were all very polite and attentive, nothing was too much trouble and the waiter’s recommendation for our main meals – the cannon of lamb with a marjoram jus for me, and the 21-day aged fillet of Bedfordshire beef for my colleague served with accompaniments – hit the spot completely. The Nags Head smoke their own fish so I started with a selection of smoked fish with lemon and coriander butter simply served so as not to spoil the lovely smoked flavours of the fish. My colleague had the duck liver parfait and roasted pistachios served with pear chutney and toasted brioche. The portions are generous, so for the smaller appetite maybe two courses are enough, however we soldiered on and finished with a delicious crème brulé, and apple and rhubarb tart with panna cotta ice cream. There is a selection of menus to choose from and they can mostly be mixed and matched except for the Fixed Price Menu of The Day. The dinner menu ranges from starters at £5.95 upwards, to main dishes at £16.95 upwards. The produce is mainly sourced locally and the quality is flawless. Each day offers include a red, white or rosé wine at a reduced special price to accompany the delicious food. The team at the Nags Head are always thinking ahead and creating new and interesting menus to keep the customers coming back and their recipe for success surely works as we went early on a Wednesday evening and by the time we left the restaurant it was buzzing. I look forward to my next visit to this haven in the Chilterns.

he brand launched in Zimbabwe 35 years ago and has since created a home-grown family company which breathes life and creativity into the ancient art of wax casting, transforming silver into intricate carvings of Africa’s biggest characters – characters which the Mavros family have personally encountered. Elephants, monkeys and starfish are cast into necklaces, earrings and table art; the dedication to an irrefutable quality of work and an innate artistic style are key aspects to the Patrick Mavros brand. The distinction of the Patrick Mavros brand lies in the family’s involvement in the business. They are indeed the heartbeat of the company; each family member brings something unique, and each grow the brand with a distinctly personal approach: Patrick Mavros, the patriarch of the family and spearhead of the business, was born and raised a fourth generation Zimbabwean in Matabeleland (the wildest, most Western province of Zimbabwe). Training first as a baker, then a soldier, his path to becoming one of the world’s most accomplished sculptors all started when he carved a small pair of earrings for his wife Catja as a birthday gift. From there Catja became the pivotal influence that was to set Patrick on his path to building this definitive African luxury brand. Alex Mavros, the eldest son, grew up with his family around him in the Unwimsi Valley, and describes his childhood immersed in the wildness as an ‘African Disneyland’. The boys were forever encouraged to draw on their creativity and initiative. By age six, Alex had made his first sale: when his parents were away and the shop was closed, he opened it up, introduced the pieces, told the stories he had heard his father recounting and sold a small sculpture – that he gift wrapped himself! Years later, after completing a Psychology and Business Degree at Edinburgh University, Alex launched the London Flagship store which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Forbes Mavros, the second-born son in the Mavros clan, studied design at the University of Edinburgh, The Royal College of Art in London, and the Creative Academy in Milan. After completing an apprenticeship in Italy, he returned to Zimbabwe before moving to Mauritius in 2007 to set up a second Patrick Mavros workshop. In 2011 he opened the Patrick Mavros atelier in Port Louis. Forbes and his wife, Kate Mavros – also a talented jewellery designer – continue to live there today with their daughter, Azaan. In December 2014, they launched the latest Sea Urchin Collection; combining sterling silver and 18c gold with coloured stones, diamonds and pearls, the Sea Urchin Collection embodies the hidden natural beauty that exists within our fragile oceans. They are currently designing a new jewellery range. The younger Mavros sons are also equally involved in the business. Patrick Jnr completed a degree in jewellery design and silversmithing at the Edinburgh College of Art followed by an MBA in Luxury Brand Management through Cartier in Paris. He has since moved back to Zimbabwe where he is managing the design and manufacture of the sculpture and jewellery and now takes on a leading role in design and product development. Like Forbes, Patrick Jnr is an indispensible creative mind behind the collections; he is currently developing his latest vision and most exciting collection to date, the Cobra range Benjamin Mavros, the youngest of the Mavros men, returned home to Zimbabwe in 2010 following the completion of a Business and Marketing degree at Newcastle University. He continues to work closely with his father in Harare. Having completed the Croc Skin Collection, Ben is currently occupied with the day-to-day management of the African business.

ave you forever dreamed about owning a perfect dress that will give you a beautiful silhouette or that jacket that would fit you just right? You can make your dream come true at Katja Nuutinen Couture studio on the foothills of Wimbledon Village. “A great design is so much more than the drawing on paper. It is all about how the design works with the personality of the wearer, how the correct proportions bring the look together, how the right shade of fabric makes you radiant and about every tiny detail, tuck and stitch, in that piece which is lovingly made for you. We put this intricate puzzle together to make sure you look stunning when it’s your moment to shine!” Katja says. Katja Nuutinen, originally from Finland, has quickly established as one of the sought after new generation couturiers in London attracting high-profile clientele not only from the UK but also from around the world. She is known for her timelessly opulent and beautifully finished designs and meticulous attention to perfect fit and detail. Katja’s interest in couture started already in childhood and she has gone through extensive training to be able to produce exquisite couture gowns and tailoring using a handpicked range of sumptuous materials. In the calm atmosphere of her studio she creates beautiful pieces of bespoke couture working closely with her clients. Her clients are public figures, MPs, international CEOs but equally importantly “ordinary” people, who want to enjoy wearing an outfit of their dreams whether it is a dazzling gown for a Red Carpet event, a chic Mother of the Bride outfit, or a fabulous dress for a holiday in the sun! Katja likes to make her clients feel at ease and enjoy the special experience of having their dream outfit designed and made for them. She embraces our individual strengths and is able to cleverly disguise the features we are not too keen to show. Katja says: “I am privileged to work with lovely clients and will use all my expertise to deliver a fantastic outfit, which makes you feel gorgeous and unique in all those important moments of your life.” Along with her bespoke designs, Katja Nuutinen Couture has created a clutch bag collection made of soft leathers and suede. Just like all the couture pieces, all her bags are made by hand from cutting to finish in Wimbledon. Katja is now expanding her eclectic collection to include hats and fascinators that are perfect for weddings and events such as Ascot. The hat collection is so fresh that it has not even reached the website yet from the table of the studio where it’s being currently made. “You can now get a complete, fully thought through outfit from one place. No more need to spend days running around trying to put your outfit together.”

These hand-painted pony hair ankle boots will literally send shivers of excitement all the way down to your toes. Animal skin – fake and real – made a big comeback on the autumn/winter runways, as did fabrics that shone and glistened on model bodies. These boots by Kim Kwang are totally inspired and will go from day to night and add that sexy edge to your look.
‘Zip me up’ midnight blue patent ankle boots just scream fun and will be there for you on the dance floor and cheer you up on rainy days.
The designer Kim Kwang is the shoe designer that fashionistas are raving about. A Central Saint Martins and Istituto Marangoni graduate, Beijing-born Kwang was nurtured as a designer working alongside Jimmy Choo on the Jimmy Choo Couture Footwear Collection before he established his own brand.
We’re in love because… He is one of those designers who feeds a woman’s desire to feel fierce in a pair of killer heels. He pushes creative boundaries and combines masculine strength with feminine elegance. This is footwear that does just that.

Eterna – Malaysian green and black suede with gold mirror detail ankle boots fit well into the season’s rekindled love with the 1980s. Set for a full-on revival next year, the 80s trend this time around is an affair of ruffle skirts, bold prints and big shoulders. These are the boots to carry it off.
These are the ultimate investment fashion buy – unisex leather biker boots, which will last you forever, get better with age and be your go-to boots for really bad weather. Not just that, the brand Forentini + Baker has collaborated with Ducati on this capsule collection for autumn/winter to give its artisanal reputation a tough make-over.
Malaysian-born Rupert Sanderson is a respected name in designer shoes. He may not equal the ‘household name recognition’ of Manolo Blahnik or Jimmy Choo but he is right up there on a fashion pedestal with them. He has been selling his gorgeous designs since 2001 and he has two Accessory Designer of the Year Awards from the British Fashion Council and Elle Style Awards respectively.
The designer Londoner Deborah Baker formed Fiorentini + Baker with Paolo Fiorentini in 2001 after partying through college and freelancing. Her home in Shoreditch is her inspiration as it’s always filled with friends and family. So there is always opportunity to pop a cork and have a good time.

ummer has finally hung up its hat and handed over the reins to autumn. And whilst we didn’t have the hottest (or driest) of seasons, we are now all facing the dreaded dilemma of the transition period between flip flops and boots. When do we stop with the fake tan? How soon is too soon for a larger denier tight? What is the ideal footwear to slide effortlessly from summer into autumn into winter? Well worry no more! Here is our helpful guide to getting through this season in style… Good Golly Miss Molly! With the crispness of an autumn morning, comes the addition of a thicker denier. Don’t be scared to mix your fabrics either; Molly, with her cosy combination of herringbone tweed and sumptuous suede, is the perfect shoe for teaming up with ribbed tights or knee high socks. All For One And One For All. Choose a shoe that will carry you from work day to date night and beyond. Bonnie has all the elegance of a court shoe with the added comfort of a lace up. The ideal style for fitted trousers, a transitional skirt or a quick change to evening look. A Classic Reinvention. If you’re not a heel girl, then the reintroduction of the brogue this year equals happy feet for you. Our gorgeous Hattie comes in three seasonal colour combinations and will put a smile on your face and a skip in your step. The Inbetweeners. Ankle boots are the ultimate in versatility. They are a wear-with-all, must-have staple for your wardrobe and even if the sun decides to show its face again this autumn, they look awesome with jeans and a light, bright top. Just like Josephine in all her Berry glory! Whatever The Weather. Take care of your shoes. Don’t be put off by suede styles, like Annie, this autumn. Treat them with waterproof protector spray and clean them regularly and they will last you well into spring.

ind House, home to the Sixth Form of The Royal Masonic School for Girls, is a welcoming community where girls can study and socialise in a grown up environment. It provides a welcoming hub for Sixth Form life where those joining us for Sixth Form quickly settle and make friends with the girls who have come up through the School, often from our Preparatory department. This inclusive and vibrant community challenges each girl to fulfil her unique potential and encourages a breadth of study and interests. With 32 subjects available at A Level, we offer diverse and exciting opportunities for study, from traditional academic disciplines in which we excel, to more creative subjects such as Textiles and Photography, and Applied A Levels in Business and Health and Social Care. Small group teaching, personal tutoring and excellent results pave the way for future success. Class sizes vary but they are small enough for individual views to be heard, but large enough to provoke discussion, debate and the occasional argument! Our unique approach to timetabling allows us to tailor subject choices to students’ needs, offering an enviable flexibility of subject combinations which targets and develops each girl’s personal strengths. The School’s objective is to for girls to gain the highest grades of which they are capable, but at the same time, we recognise that success in life is dependent on more than just academic qualifications. The diverse range of extra-curricular activities that are available throughout the School is supplemented with choices specifically for the Sixth Form; this wider curriculum allows our students to develop important personal qualities such as initiative, co-operation and leadership. Girls are encouraged to take responsibility for their own time and success; study periods encourage independent learning, and our highly trained staff are on hand to help and support students in all that they do. This caring and supportive environment encourages our Sixth Formers to become self-motivated learners and also provides the perfect transition from school to university. 99% of our girls go on to university, many of them Russell Group; and in 2015 well over 80% gained a place at their institution of first choice. Our results represent exceptionally high value added scores, indicating outstanding progress made by pupils and our Sixth Form was rated “excellent” at our most recent inspection. In 2015, 75% of our A Level grades were at A*-B grade, with almost half being at A* or A grade. Taking on positions of responsibility is an important part of Sixth Form life at RMS, and our senior girls are encouraged to act as role models and to play a significant part at the forefront of the School. In so doing, they develop skills in teamwork and leadership, communication and presentation, problem-solving and tolerance, all of which form a vital part in preparing them for the future. RMS offers full, weekly and flexible boarding options, and the experience of boarding in the Sixth Form is enormously beneficial and excellent preparation for life after school – our boarders move on to university as confident, independent young women, who thrive after a seamless transition. We welcome boarders from all over the world, and the resulting cosmopolitan mix, coupled with our established global outlook, gives all our girls an early taste of the global nature of 21st century higher education and the world of work.
The School offers excellent careers guidance, and careful management of the UCAS application process to ensure that every girl’s next move is a successful one. Mock interviews are arranged, and there are plenty of opportunities for relevant work experience. We have a dedicated Work Experience Advisor and Head of Careers who organises numerous careers talks, visits to conferences and a biennial careers convention. The School also works closely with former students and parents to create professional networks to support all our leavers. Our girls go on to succeed highly in the world of work, gaining places on the most competitive graduate schemes – in fact, we are frequently told by both universities and employers that our girls are recognisable for their exceptional qualities, that they have an “edge” over other students the same age. This edge, or “the everything else” as we call it, is a unique combination of personal and interpersonal qualities which are all highly valued in life beyond school. Above all, we want our Sixth Formers to fulfil their dreams, succeed and be happy. We believe that this is most likely within a traditional Sixth Form with high expectations regarding appearance, attendance and punctuality, combined with a more informal, seminar-style approach to teaching.

What is Discretionary Investment Management? This is a service offered by professional investment managers for those with funds available for investment who are looking for a tailored investment solution. An investment manager takes time to understand your personal requirements, including attitude to investment risk, and constructs a suitable portfolio in line with your needs. You will have a direct relationship with this investment manager and their team throughout the lifetime of your investment. Your investment manager is accountable for the performance and on-going suitability of your portfolio, taking responsibility for all decisions on the portfolio.
Why would I want a discretionary investment service? People choose discretionary investment management for a number of reasons. For example:
• Failing to achieve desired outcomes from existing arrangements, • No suitable ready-made solutions available, • Not having enough time to manage investments yourself, or, • Simply not knowing where to start to look for the right investment.
Clients often have capital that has accumulated in a SIPP, from an inheritance or the sale of a property or business and want to ensure that this money is carefully invested to secure a long-term future goal. Whatever the reason, a discretionary investment manager can carefully assess your financial situation and tailor a portfolio to match your goals, whether it’s to plan for the future, provide a regular income from your portfolio or simply target the highest capital appreciation.
Why would I choose a discretionary manager rather than managing my own portfolio? Some private investors successfully run their own portfolios, and enjoy doing so, but in practice it can be very time consuming to continually monitor and confidently react to market events. Discretionary investment managers are experts in this field, having years of practical experience and access to primary and secondary research across all asset classes so they can select and manage the best investment opportunities. Discretionary investment managers build a diversified portfolio to suit each client’s unique personal circumstances and risk preferences. It is not just about selecting the right investments to achieve the best returns but rather making sure they are the most suitable investments for each client. Implications of tax status or a requirement to use the portfolio to generate a regular income over time have a significant impact on which investment options are appropriate.
Why choose Quilter Cheviot as your discretionary investment manager? Quilter Cheviot is one of the UK’s largest discretionary investment firms, which can trace its heritage to 1771. The firm is based in 12 locations across the UK, Jersey and Ireland and has total funds under management of £17.2bn (as at 30 June 2015). Using our active investment management process, we take advantage of the best investment opportunities from across the globe and act in our clients’ best interests, following their stated objectives and restrictions and reviewing and reporting back regularly to our clients and their financial adviser, if they have one.

t seems that Summer ended a little early this year and we are already getting lots of customers planning ahead for the chilly weather. Some dogs really do feel the cold and some, like my French Bulldog Freddie, absolutely hate the rain! So why not treat them to a snuggly fleece-lined tweed coat, hand knitted Merino wool jumper or a fun raincoat. And there are brilliant towelling drying coats from ‘Ruff and Tumble’ in Norfolk which are a godsend in the boot of the car to keep your dog warm and dry, your boot clean after a muddy walk, or after a warm bath, which is needed all too often at this time of year. It’s also important to be aware of safety as the evenings become dark so early. It’s a great idea to get a reflective coat or light-up collar to help your pets be seen. Or you can get little flashing lights that can easily clip onto your dog’s collar when needed. We also have some lovely deep tweed and fleece nest beds, beautiful yet practical fabric and fur blankets, and super cosy fur lined Snuggle beds – so warm my dogs don’t want to get up in the morning! And what about us owners? We deserve a treat too! How about celebrating the Great British Bake Off with the fantastic ‘Bark Off’ apron from Sweet William then settling down with your own special mug. Although I think our dogs love whoever gives them their tea best!!

ollars & Coats Gala Ball proudly supported by Henry Wiltshire International, in aid of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home will be taking place on 12th November at Battersea Evolution The Collars & Coats Gala Ball, now in its seventh year, has become a highlight of the Winter social calendar, and is consistently regarded as one of the most innovative and eagerly anticipated charity events. This year’s stellar star line-up will see much-loved entertainers, acting greats, and global fashion icons treading the red carpet, which boasts the worldunique Battersea ‘Doggie Guard of Honour’ comprising many of the Home’s 400 rescued canine residents. Once again the event will be attended by a host of bigstar names from the world of film, TV, music, and fashion to show their support for the world-famous rescue centre. The event’s headline artist this year will be Bryan Ferry. Past attendees have included the likes of David Gandy and Amanda Holden. This year’s event is particularly poignant with our theme being transformations. We’ll be inviting former Battersea dogs onto the stage with their owners to demonstrate how we have transformed lives. The dogs may have undergone a physical transformation (matted, dirty, overgrown hair to clean, healthy, glossy coats), a medical transformation (emaciated to healthy, limping to nimble) or seen a transformation in their behaviour (from terrified to confident). The night will be all about celebrating Battersea’s ability to transform dog’s lives whilst our London site itself transforms with the construction of new kennels. www.collarsandcoats.org.uk

or the first time this Halloween runners will be faced with a decision when they reach the finish line – Trick or Treat? The brand new Trick or Treat Run London arrives in Richmond Park on Sunday 1 November and offers the rare opportunity to run 2k, 5k or 10k on the closed roads of this stunning royal park. Once runners have finished their chosen distance they will be faced with a unique decision, to either go down the Trick finish for a spooky surprise, or to play it safe and head in the opposite direction for a treat. Richmond Park is famous for its stunning views and wandering deer, close to London but seemingly a different world from the bustling capital, there are few more picturesque and pleasant places in the country to run. Runners of all abilities are encouraged to take part, and the event is nicely timed to encourage running into the winter season. As well as their trick or treat everybody who crosses the line will receive a special medal to commemorate the day, which can be transformed into a badge and attached to clothing or bags. “We have been putting on events for over 25 years but as far as we know this is the first dual run finish in the world,” said Nick Rusling from organisers Human Race Events. “It’s a privilege to have this very special park available and free from traffic for the first ever Trick or Treat Run. I know many will use this as an opportunity to clock up a great 10k time.” If you would rather stay safe in numbers at this Halloween run you can sign up as a group and run any of the three routes together. Teams of five or more can enter and receive a 20% discount off the usual entry price. Fancy dress is encouraged so runners can get creative with their outfits. Alongside fitness, fun and fancy dress will also be fundraising. Breast Cancer Care are the official charity partner of the Trick or Treat Run, with all participants encouraged to raise money which will go towards providing vital support services for anyone affected by breast cancer. There is no minimum fundraising target and it’s easy to set up a Just Giving online donation page when registering for the event. Tom Whitehead, Sporting and Challenge Events Manager at Breast Cancer Care, said: “Breast Cancer Care is delighted to be the official charity partner for the first ever Trick or Treat Run London. It’s so exciting to offer our runners the chance to take part in this unique experiential run while supporting Breast Cancer Care. The money raised will help us support the 55,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK.”
Brighton Belles that never lose their allure Jill Menghetti is charmed by the veterans taking part in the London to Brighton Run There’s something about a working antique car that appeals to men and women alike. Heritage? Beauty?
74 the riverside journals
The wonder of early motor engineering? Sheer eccentricity? At any rate, it’s enough to bring out half a million spectators along the route to cheer on entries in the annual Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, taking place this year on Sunday, 1 November. Reckoned to be the longest running motoring event in the world, its combination of history and camaraderie attracts more than 400 entries from across the world, with the biggest overseas entry coming from the United States, followed by France. To take part in the 60-mile chug to the coast, vehicles must have been built by 1905 and have a valid dating certificate from the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain. Many of the drivers and their passengers add to the atmosphere by braving the November weather and dressing up in costume.
Did you know? The screenplay for Genevieve was actually written by an American, William Rose, who volunteered to fight with the Black Watch, then married and settled in Britain after the war. He also wrote the screenplays for The Ladykillers (1955) and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967) for which he won an Oscar A red flag is still symbolically destroyed before the start of the Run in Hyde Park The first recorded private car in England was a steam phaeton built by Walter Hancock in 1838. It carried four people but had the severe disadvantage of disrupting the rest of the traffic system, not the least because it frightened the horses In 1895 there were only about 15 cars on Britain’s roads but by 1905 there were nearly 16,000 The first Vauxhall car was built in 1903 in Vauxhall, south London, and in 1905 the company moved to Luton where many significant cars from its past are housed It was not until 1934 that new drivers were required to pass a test to obtain their licence In 1971 the Queen entered (though did not drive herself) a 70-year-old Daimler owned by her great-grandfather King Edward VII. Since then it has been on many Runs, driven by Prince Michael of Kent, who is President of the Royal Automobile Club, and staff from the Royal Household

et’s get two things clear. The event is definitely not a race, and drivers get very huffy indeed if you call their vehicles old crocks. Limited to an average speed of 20mph, these beauties set off from Hyde Park in an orderly procession with the oldest leaving first at dawn, like a mobile history show. So in theory it takes just over three hours to reach the finish along the seafront at Madeira Drive…If they make it before 4.30pm, drivers are rewarded with a bronze medal. Then they can breathe a sigh of relief, change out of their – often soaking – clothes and let their hair down at the Veteran Car Club annual dinner at the Grand Hotel. This, of course, was the background to the enchanting 1953 classic film Genevieve, a much loved British comedy with an unforgettable quirky harmonica soundtrack. Still available on DVD, the movie put the Veteran Car Run on the map and made collecting early cars fashionable. It had a great line-up with Kenneth More, Kay Kendall, John Gregson and Dinah Sheridan. However, the star of the show was Genevieve, a 1904 12hp Darracq and a mere 49 years old at the time. Now aged an amazing 111, she still takes part in the Run every year. Genevieve is housed in the Louwman Museum in The Hague, along with her rival in the film, the 12-16hp double phaeton Spyker. More than 250 antique and classic motor cars are cherished in this private collection which is open to visitors and has been lovingly compiled by two generations of the Louwman family. When you think about it, it’s extraordinary that such precious treasures are taken out and put to the 60-mile test in the November gloom and wet rather than in the summer. The answer is that the London to Brighton is a pilgrimage. It commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14 November 1896 which celebrated the Locomotives on the Highway Act. This raised their speed limit from 4mph to 14mph and abolished the need for vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot (a few years earlier he had even been obliged to carry a warning red flag). So the Run was a signal that the motor car had arrived and had come to stay. Indeed, instructions from the organisers stated: “Owners and drivers should remember that motor cars are on trial in England and that any rashness or carelessness might injure the industry in this country.” The first re-enactment was in 1927 and it has been held annually ever since, except during the war and in 1947 when petrol was rationed. Since 1930 the Run has been staged specifically as a non-profit making veneration by the Royal Automobile Club with the support of the Veteran Car Club. It continues to capture the imagination of people from all walks of life, including sports stars and celebrities. Last year, in monsoon-like conditions, entries included Olympic legends Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Ben Ainslie as well as renowned Formula One former team boss Ross Brawn, multiple Le Mans winner Jochen Mass and TV baker Paul Hollywood. Brawn, who was driving his 1904 Wilson Pitcher, the last known surviving British-built machine of its kind, had to call on the RAC motoring services volunteer patrolmen when his car suffered a broken oil pipe at Crawley. “They rescued us by fitting a piece of rubber pipe in the middle of the fractured one and it’s thanks to them that we got here! The whole thing has been wonderful fun,” he said afterwards. Hollywood, a keen motor enthusiast, drove a two-seater 1904 De Dion Bouton powered by a single-cylinder 6hp engine and capable of 30mph, lent by the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu. He said: “It’s very different from today’s cars. You control just about everything with your hands and that takes a bit of getting used to. The run was absolutely exhilarating and we were cheered on throughout. You get a real sense of achievement when you finish.” Some of the venerable “horseless carriages” in the Run have been passed down the generations from great-grandfathers and grandfathers while others have been rescued and carefully restored, often with the express purpose of participating in the event. Among these are a 1902 Delahaye that was found unused for 80 years under a pile of apple boxes in Normandy, and a 1903 Clement that was just a heap of bits and pieces when unearthed on the Isle of Wight. A regular entry is one of the first British sportscars, the 1898 Somerset-built Stephens. This racy little 10hp dogcart won a gold medal from the Daily Sketch for its performance back in the 1927 recreation run and is still always among the first to reach Brighton. The entire event is free to view. Starting from Hyde Park, the cars pass under Wellington Arch before driving past Buckingham Palace and down the Mall to provide a fine spectacle. Most of the route follows the A23, with another great viewpoint being Crawley High Street where the official halfway checkpoint ensures that every car will stop for a few moments. ICON CARS
Nene Overland by Richard Yarrow
O 78 the riverside journals
ctober marks exactly a year since Nene Overland opened its new garage in the centre of Maidenhead. A former independent Land Rover retailer, it now offers sales and authorised servicing of vehicles from the legendary British off-roading brand. But it has also turned its attention to the other side of the Atlantic and is today selling models from another equally famous 4x4 firm – Jeep. As an independent stockist, it can source new and used models to suit all customer tastes, including the recently launched ‘baby Jeep’, the Renegade, and the iconic Wrangler. Nene Overland started life in 1988 in a farm building on the outskirts of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. It still operates from the site, boasting stock of more than 200 vehicles at any one time. That includes everything from utility-spec Land Rover Defenders and modified Discoverys, to workhorse Japanese pick-ups and even a nice line of Ford Mustang coupés. Company owner Andrew Harrison-Smith added the Maidenhead business last year, and further expansion plans for 2016 are in the pipeline. The company has built its reputation as a bespoke design and engineering firm, and nowhere is that more evident than its latest project – a reworked version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. Badged the ‘Wild Edition by Icon Cars’, the team has taken Detroit’s finest and given it a unique makeover. Extreme is the word that springs to mind from the moment you set eyes on it, let alone get behind the wheel. Most obvious is the exterior styling, modified from a sophisticated and contemporary luxury crossover into something which can scare children at 10 paces.
79 the riverside journals
The entire front end is new, including the huge ‘power bulge’ bonnet and low-to-the-road bumper. A similar revamp has taken place down the flanks and at the rear, which includes a new quad exhaust system. Every Grand Cherokee SRT leaves the Jeep factory with a 6.4-litre V8 petrol engine, and its standard output of 475bhp would be more than enough power for many people. But not the Nene Overland crew and its customers; the addition of a supercharger takes the total to a whopping 700bhp, which means an outrageous 0-60mph time of less than four seconds. Linked to an eightspeed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddleshifter, that’s true supercar performance from a heavyweight vehicle with serious 4x4 credentials. Not that you’d want to head off-road with this car’s beautiful 22-inch forged alloy wheels, Brembo performance braking system complete with red calipers, and Bilstein adjustable suspension. Pressing the starter button to the left of the steering wheel, the power upgrade is immediately obvious. The engine leaps into life with a throaty roar, and even the slightest pressure on the accelerator pedals causes the revs to rise. On the road it’s lightning quick to move off, but the reworked suspension can only do so much to mask the high centre of gravity. Body roll through the corners is pronounced. The interior is almost entirely as Jeep designed it, though the car’s seats have been retrimmed to feature ‘crocodile hide’ leather inserts. There’s plenty of space for five to travel in comfort. The beauty of the Nene Overland system of bespoke engineering is that customers can pick from a menu of options, selecting one, a few or the whole lot. So the body kit is £8,900, the bonnet another £2,300, the leather £2,495 and so on. Tick every box on the order form and the standard £63,995 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT becomes a £89,995 monster. Colour choices are limited to Brilliant Black, Granite Crystal, Glacier White and Billet Silver. You might wonder who would want such a car. The answer is that because it’s available in right hand drive for UK roads, the company has already sold two and has another six customer orders. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s clearly demand for something that will mark you out from the average sports utility vehicle driver.

Tepilo’s British Buyer Barometer

he British have a unique relationship with property. As a nation we have a deeprooted urge to own our own property and maintain an up-to-date perspective on all things property-related. In fact, we do this much more than some of our neighbours on the Continent. To this end, Sarah Beeny’s Tepilo decided to take a step into the mind of the average 2015 property buyer. Tepilo carried out a survey of 2,000 homebuyers, otherwise known as their ‘British Buyer Barometer’. This research set out to understand the thought and decision making process of those who have either bought a home in the past 12 months, are in the process of buying, or are planning to purchase within the next year. The results certainly make for interesting reading... The survey revealed that the average buyer in the UK currently has a budget of £205,221, and has owned two properties in their lifetime. It also showed that Brits and are most likely to purchase a three-bedroom semi in the suburbs with their partner or spouse. When it comes to selling your property, it is important to understand what the average homebuyer is looking for and what they prioritise when they are searching for their next home. Here’s what Sarah Beeny’s Tepilo found… At the top of the priority list of buyers in 2015 is location, with 65% of those surveyed outlining this as their most important consideration. This is closely followed by number of bedrooms (56%) and the size of the garden (41%). In addition, buyers place a strong focus on the layout of a property (34%), the inclusion of a kitchen-diner (29%) and the convenience of a toilet downstairs (19%). Low crime rates and good local amenities are another strong consideration. And as Brits, it’s no surprise that a quality local pub is a major selling point for nearly a quarter of people (23%). Tepilo found that of the 2,000 people they surveyed, good transport links are seen as the most crucial factor when it comes to location, as people want to live somewhere that provides the opportunity to easily get to work as well as easily engage in other social activities. In terms of the size of properties, 45% of buyers are on the lookout for three-bed homes, while 27% are keener on two-beds. On the other end of the spectrum, 18% choose a four-bed property, and less than 5% purchase studios or one-bed houses. As Sarah Beeny puts it, “We’re a nation that’s obsessed with property ownership. The British property market is forever changing and evolving… and constantly keeps us engaged and on our toes. It’s such an exciting and often lucrative aspect of British living that the majority of the country seem to have at least some level of interest in it”.

he opportunity to take what our kids described as a “mini gap year” unexpectedly presented itself, and, having been part of the generation that never did that kind of thing, the man and I embraced the idea with excitement, and planned a tour of Southern India. On the itinerary: Bangalore, Mysore, Cananore, Kochi, Coimbatore, Ooty plus lots in between; staying in a combination of homestays, ashrams and small, independent hotels. India assaults your senses like nowhere else on earth. Never have I experienced such all-encompassing immersion of all of my senses… smell, touch, taste, sight and sound. The sights of India are breathtaking… the flora is big, bold and vibrant; the houses painted all the colours of the rainbow, stunning saris shine like precious jewels, elephants in rivers and roadways, naughty monkeys like troublesome toddlers pushing boundaries, cows, goats and sheep ambling at will, baskets of chillis, garlic cloves and limes artistically arranged as if for a still life painting… But nothing stays still in India, there is constant movement, the roads are full of heart stopping antics… oxen pulling carts alongside scooters with families of 4 aboard, tuktuks weaving and rocking alarmingly on their 3 wheels…

Getting up close and personal with the ‘real’ India...
The noise and bustle are constant and then, unexpectedly, there are small oases of tranquility, my favourite was the coffee shop in the Green Hotel in Mysore, completely run by women from economically and socially excluded communities who produced some of the best cakes seen outside of Bake Off! With cautionary tales of ‘Delhi Belly’ ringing in our ears, we were expecting to go veggie for the duration – a decision we were happy with after witnessing the reality of the providence of meat on the roadside butchers’ stalls with animal carcasses hanging in the midday sun… However, this was no real hardship, southern India is predominantly vegetarian and the flavours are fragrant with coconut, saffron, chilli, curry leaves, mustard seeds, garlic, peppercorns, tamarind and fenugreek seeds. Our taste buds went into overdrive and we had some of the best curries ever during our travels – special mention should go to Sameeth at the Malabar Beach in Cananore for producing extraordinary and consistently delicious offerings during our stay. Smells continually assault you; some awful and inescapable, like the worst loo odours ever on our 5½ hour train journey. But then there were the ambrosial jasmine and rose flower garlands hanging in taxis alongside the icons of Hindu gods, the baskets of fresh limes, sacks of spices and piles of incense in the glorious markets of Mysore… A country of a contradictions, I found it hard to be in an environment where it is culturally not allowed for men and women to touch in public, so no holding hands with my husband as we were exploring… but then we experienced some of the best hands-on ayurvedic massages ever, allowing us to sleep through the night like babies. We experienced a taste of celebrity status due to being (what felt like!) the only blondes in India – we’ve never been photographed as much – sometimes surreptitiously, paparazzi style, sometimes blatantly, sometimes even asked! India is diverse, colourful, and inspirational. It is also confusing, chaotic, and frustrating. It is a nation of sales people who will promise you the world and deliver Croydon (sorry Croydon)! But there is no malice, just a strong desire to sell you something, anything! India challenges you on a very personal level. You may love it, or hate it, but you won’t be indifferent. India will test your limits and its basic humanity will touch your soul. Go!

Coach on the Couch
The Essential Coach Elements of on the Couch’s on Couple Therapy ‘If Only…’
Empathy and Understanding For couples therapy to be effective, the counsellor or psychotherapist has to be able to build rapport with both partners. This means remaining unbiased and non-judgemental. A therapist is not there to assign blame, shame or guilt; rather he or she will look at the whole dynamic between the couple and determine where areas of conflict and miscommunication are happening.
Provide a Supportive Environment Talking to a professional therapist or counsellor can be challenging, especially when the issues are personal and very emotional. The best therapists will create an atmosphere during the sessions that is very safe and comfortable, allowing you to talk about the issues of concern. As with any psychotherapy or counselling, all sessions should be conducted with respect to client confidentiality and privacy. This also helps couples to speak openly and to share emotions, thoughts and concerns that may be very difficult to talk about in other settings. Finally, an essential element of any couples therapy has to be in the therapist’s comfort in allowing the couple to create their own solutions to the problems. Through exercises, talking, and thinking creatively through the techniques used by the therapist both of the partners will open up their creative side, reconnecting and strengthening their relationship while learning more about themselves and each other.

s Frank Sinatra says, “Regrets, I’ve had a few, but then again too few to mention…”. Having some regrets in life is inevitable but don’t allow the ‘if only’ mantra to takeover. Here’s my checklist to help you have as few regrets as possible… Follow your dreams. Others may think you are crazy, or it can’t be done, but one of life’s greatest pleasures is succeeding when
others expected failure. Be yourself – by pretending to be something you are not you are deceiving yourself and others. You always impress more when you allow others to see the real you. Surround yourself with positive people who believe in you and want the best for you – negative people will do all they can to bring you down with them – why would you let them? Think of others, not just yourself. Make a conscious decision to help friends, family and associates when they need it rather than just thinking of your own needs. This isn’t completely altruistic – people are much more likely to help you if you have helped them first. Don’t give up just because the going gets tough. Sometimes we have to take small steps rather than big strides, sometimes we have to change the route, but keep your eye on the goal and you will get there if you are determined. Cut the procrastination – if you can do it today, do it! People regret the things they didn’t do much more than the things they did – you can always do it again if it didn’t work out the first time, even if you do it differently. Change begins by thinking, and then acting differently. Sometimes we can make those changes on our own; sometimes we need support to make change happen. Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, is available by appointment for private consultations and motivational meetings.

n the life experiences of any couple, there will be challenges that will have to be overcome for the relationship to continue to thrive. In some situations, particularly those that involve strongly held personal, family, interpersonal, cultural, religious or moral issues, couples may begin to struggle. This struggle often starts with problems of communication, in feeling isolated from each other, or in feelings of no longer working towards the same goals. When this happens, seeking the assistance of a professional counsellor or psychotherapist can be highly effective in identifying the root issues and helping the couple to work towards creatively resolving these differences.

DO YOU WEAR HEARING AIDS? ARE YOU ALWAYS LOSING THEM, OR FORGETTING TO PUT THEM IN? Are you fed up of changing batteries and are conscious of the way your hearing aids look? Do you find they don’t work for you when you need them the most, such as at a restaurant or drinks party? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions then you need to know about Lyric, the latest state-of-the-art hearing aid developed in Silicon Valley by world-leading hearing instrument manufacturer Phonak.
“Lyric is a new type of implantable hearing aid that can be worn for up to three months at a time, without the need for daily insertion or removal — or the need to change batteries”
Its placement deep in the ear canal means it has a totally natural sound quality, improving your hearing even in the most challenging of listening situations and it’s totally invisible. Lyric is now available for trial at Pindrop Hearing, a hearing consultancy based at 107 Harley Street in central London. Pindrop Hearing is the UK’s leading expert in this new technology.
We’re offering 50 Riverside Journals readers a 50% reduction on our initial assessment fee and, if suitable, a free 30-day trial of the Lyric hearing aids. This is a limited offer for 50 people only. O Biofreeze Biofreeze is available in Boots and on www.boots.com
Advantages over ice Biofreeze is a cooling gel that has been clinically proven to be as effective as ice application in delivering rapid pain relief and reduction of inflammation. One of many advantages of Biofreeze gel is that it allows for activity during treatment, meaning it’s a simple and fuss free method of treatment that allows users to continue with everyday life as normal. Applied around the injured area Biofreeze will reduce skin temperature, reduce blood flow, lessen inflammation and allow the body to repair itself quickly – producing many of the benefits of ice without the complications of dripping or leaking and a wider range of movement upon application. Biofreeze is the number one recommended topical pain reliever as used by hands-on healthcare professionals*. For 20 years, Biofreeze has been helping people manage discomfort by offering a variety of benefits that assist in therapy, pain relief, exercise and overall comfort, resulting in quick effective relief as an alternative to pain killers.
Biofreeze is available in three different formats: Roll-on: allows effective delivery of Biofreeze gel to smaller muscles and joints throughout the body. The massaging action of the roller ball can be used to stimulate trigger points in the affected area. Spray: permits easy, effective application without direct body contact, helping patients at home gain access to hard-to-reach body areas such as the back. Tube: gel-dispensing tube is particularly well-suited for hands-on massage application (particularly larger muscles and joints) *U.S. Doctors of Chiropractic & Podiatric Medicine, Physical Therapists & Massage Therapists.

Clinically proven, Biofreeze products help break the pain cycle, and as a topical pain reliever it delivers the therapeutic pain relieving benefits of cold therapy in an effective and convenient gel formula. Acting as the perfect gym and fitness training companion, Biofreeze relieves symptoms of muscle aches and spasms, soreness, sprains, strains, bumps, pulls and bruises by simply applying gel directly to the affected area. iss Sherina Balaratnam and her team are proud to announce their very latest Red Carpet ‘Fire & Ice’ facial treatment, with a special twist to include neck, décolleté and backs of hands. The treatment is optimised with a suite of cosmeceutical serums and cremes complemented with therapeutic movements and massage with a unique botanical therapy honey to guarantee one of the most effective and invigorating treatments – a must have treatment for that special pre-Christmas pampering or for that perfect gift… Beaconsfield Old Town has a plethora of beautiful old, listed buildings and none more delightful than the premises of S-Thetics situated just on the edge of the town. When I entered through the discreet, attractive side entrance to the clinic I was greeted by Louise, the S-Thetics clinic administrator, a very bubbly and polite young lady who immediately passed me a medical questionnaire form to complete. Now, not being a regular visitor to beauty clinics and to having facial and skin care treatments, I was – I must confess – a little apprehensive at the prospect of having a ‘Fire and Ice’ facial treatment. However, quite soon I was greeted by Sherina Balaratnam, one of the UK’s leading non-surgical cosmetic specialists, who immediately made me feel at ease as she talked me through the ‘Fire & Ice’ procedure. The knowledge that Miss Balaratnam is not only a fully-qualified Doctor, but has a background in plastic surgery reassured me that I was in good hands in a clinic dedicated to carrying out medical aesthetic treatments. Then I was introduced to Lindsay, S-Thetics’ medical aesthetician, who was going to carry out my treatment. Firstly, I had to move up to the state-of-the-art VISIA digital skin imaging system whereby 3D images were taken of all angles of my face to analyse not only the surface of my skin but looking 2-3mm underneath. I suddenly found myself thinking back to some of those holidays in my youth where not enough sunscreen or higher factors were applied! Oh dear, and I especially recalled one particular holiday when I got some nasty sunburn directly on my face! I was told, however, that my skin was well hydrated – that was good news – and that Miss Balaratnam would talk me through the images after my treatment. The Fire and Ice experience then began. Pioneered in Beverly Hills and coveted by A-listers globally, this renowned intensive treatment is clinically formulated with the purest pharmaceutical grade botanical ingredients. Yes, botanical.
First of all there was the deep cleansing ritual, followed by the ‘Fire’ masque which was applied and left on for five minutes. The Intensive Resurfacing Masque had a scent which reminded me of Christmas. It is formulated with sugar cane extract (a potent natural source of glycolic acid), retinol (Vitamin A) and niacinamide (Vitamin B3) to reduce fine lines, address problematic skin such as acne and pigmentation, and encourage cellular renewal. I felt a slight tingling sensation but nothing more than that. This was then cleansed off with soaked, warm mitts, and immediately followed by the ‘Ice’ masque which cooled everything down within only seconds of the application. This Ice or Rejuvenating Masque is enriched with hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, green tea and other potent antioxidants to soothe, hydrate and nourish the skin. This felt quite soothing, very relaxing and had a refreshing minty scent. After this came a fantastic neck and shoulder massage. This was such a plus to the treatment and, after a busy few days at work, was greatly appreciated. By now I was ready for forty winks! Lindsay was brilliant and made me feel totally relaxed and at ease. When the treatment was finished Miss Balaratnam came into the room and passed me a mirror. I saw for myself just how immediate the results were. My skin looked so much softer with a lovely glow. No wonder, I thought, this treatment is a total hit with many of the A-list stars – it really is a red carpet treatment. To maintain this rejuvenation treatment I was given advice on skincare products to use and now I am looking forward to my next visit soon with Miss Balaratnam and her team. This is an excellent, intimate clinic, and Beaconsfield is fortunate to have gained a medical aesthetic clinic with medically trained practitioners. Don’t miss out on this amazing and invigorating experience. Treat yourself and book your ‘Fire & Ice’ Red Carpet treatment by calling S-Thetics on 01494 670990 or emailing them at info@sthetics.co.uk.

The P-Shot
®
The Pioneering Sexual Rejuvenation Treatment for Men introduced to you by Dr O Millions of men around the globe suffer in silence when it comes to insecurities about the look, feel, function and size of their manhood. For many, these problems increase with age and can dramatically impact upon their sexual performance and confidence. The groundbreaking P-Shot® is a natural treatment that has already been successfully performed on 20,000 men worldwide, with zero side effects reported. The P-Shot® can help enhance the appearance of the penis, improve sensation and function, increase size and girth and enhance sexual performance. Men see an increase in the length and girth of the penis following treatment when combined with a pump. The treatment has also shown significant improvement in conditions such as erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease. Named after the Greek god of fertility, the Priapus Shot®, or P-Shot®, is a pioneering new non-surgical treatment introduced to the UK and Europe by Dr Sherif Wakil (AKA Dr O). Dr Sherif Wakil is the European trainer and was the first doctor in the UK and Europe to perform this treatment. The P-Shot® is a natural, regenerative treatment that uses the healing potential of your own Platelet contained in your blood to stimulate cell repair and regeneration. Blood is taken from the arm, then placed in a centrifuge that Dr Wakil brought especially from USA with him, which provides extremely high quality platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) that is then injected into the penis in a very specific way to produce the very best results. The PRP generated in the centrifuge contains cell regenerating growth factors, which when injected into the penis, trigger stem cells to increase blood flow and generate healthy tissue growth. The P-Shot® is a non-surgical procedure which is carried out under local anaesthetic, so little to no pain is experienced. What’s more, the P-Shot® procedure is very quick, with an average treatment at our Harley Street Clinic taking just 40 minutes. You can also return to your daily routine immediately, and even resume sexual intercourse on the very same day. The result is usually seen in 3-4 weeks and continues to improve over the following three months, though some patients report seeing results earlier than this. “In April of this year, I was hardly able to walk due to severe pain in my back, and my cholesterol was very high. I was facing the possibility of spinal surgery and taking statins indefinitely so I decided that I would need to lose some weight. I came to Alevere because I knew I would be under medical supervision as this was important to me given my back problems. I never expected to lose the amount of weight I did over such a short space of time. The staff were all amazing and supportive, the programme easy to follow, the food enjoyable and the results speak for themselves. My cholesterol is now at normal level and the weight loss has helped my back problems immensely. I would whole heartedly recommend Alevere to anyone who wants to safely lose weight and improve their health and lifestyle. Teresa

Palm House, Kew Gardens
W
ith a few royal connections in its history, Richmond and Kew is now a leafy and well connected London suburb which attracts thousands of travellers and locals each year. In fact, Richmond’s name dates back to a palace built there by Henry VII which was named after Richmond Palace in Yorkshire. A great place for history buffs, passionate gardeners and anyone interested in natural and man-made beauty to visit, the suburb boasts Thames views as you walk along the river side. The gardens contain elements that illustrate periods of the art of gardening from the 18th to the 20th centuries, and has a plant collection second to none in the world. They also house several beautiful glasshouse complexes, like the famous Palm House. The With scenery, gardens and palaces to rival any other, Kew is also home to the famous Royal Botanical Gardens, Bingham popularly known as ‘Kew Gardens’, which is now a World Heritage Site. Created in the 18th century by Princess Augusta, the gardens span 120 hectares (300 acres) and are over 1.5 km long. As the grounds are so vast, there is the Kew Explorer that costs £4.50 per adult and £3.50 per child that will drive you around the park with seven stops around the gardens, and the drivers are fountains of knowledge! Not only for the gardening enthusiasts, Kew Gardens is also a great place to take the family, with plenty of activities for children and adults for a great day out. The Xstrata Treetop Walkway in the grounds is one of the best things to do at the gardens and gives amazing views at any time of the year. If you love the outdoors but are not keen on the gardens, Richmond Park, the largest of the Royal Parks, is the perfect place for a picnic, or you can enjoy some refreshments at The Tea Rooms in the exquisite Georgian Pembroke Lodge with views of St Paul’s Cathedral in the distance. The area also has golf courses, rowing clubs and even a polo field for sporty types. For something more relaxed, you can enjoy a river cruise that takes you all the way from Richmond to the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. For those of you museum hunters, on the north side of Kew Bridge you’ll find the London Museum of Water and Steam, which is packed full of working examples of industrial engines, as well as a steam train. The Musical Museum next door houses a delicate collection of automatic instruments. In Richmond, you can learn about the fascinating history of the area at the Museum of Richmond. There are also plenty of shops, both high street favourites and small, independently owned shops for you to spend hours browsing. The area also boasts a selection of bespoke art galleries and two theatres. The elegance of Richmond and Kew is reflected in its restaurants. For a truly excellent dining experience, head to the Michelin-starred Glasshouse next to Kew The Gardens station. If you prefer a river view, try afternoon tea at The Bingham or a delicious steak at Gaucho. You can also have lunch surrounded by beautiful plants at the acclaimed Original Maids of Honour Petersham Nurseries Café. Those with a sweet tooth will love The Original Maids of Honour, which has been supplying pastries to the people of Richmond since the early 18th century. You can enjoy a pint at The Cricketers, one of the oldest pubs in Richmond, from Petersham Nurseries Café which you can watch the sport of cricket being played on the adjacent Green. The Roebuck is a wonderful pub for views down Richmond Hill, and beer fans will want to head to the The Botanist on the Green in Kew to sample delicious ales brewed right there on the premises. At the end of the day, Kew has everything you would want from a day out, from spectacular views to top class dining and everything in between.

The Lodger by Louisa Treger
I
n this biographical novel about author Dorothy Richardson, an inspirational woman who defied the literary, sexual and social boundaries facing women of her time, Louisa Treger covers a brief, but dramatic, period in her life. Existing just above the poverty line and living in a seedy boarding house in Bloomsbury, Dorothy meets H. G. Wells, the husband of her childhood friend. In spite of her guilt, Dorothy embarks on an affair. Wells helps her find her voice as a writer, however Dorothy faces new personal dramas when she meets Veronica LeslieJones and discovers her bisexuality. Initially, Dorothy’s novels made her a cult figure, however she died in relative obscurity. This book is a beautifully intimate novel that is at once an introduction to one of the most important writers of the 20th century and a compelling story of one woman tormented by unconventional desires.

Bulbs
G
104 the riverside journals
ood gardening is all about good planning, and that’s why although it’s Autumn now I am writing about Spring bulbs, as this is the right time to buy and to plant them. We all know what a bulb looks like, just think of an onion, which is a bulb, although we are talking flower bulbs here, and specifically Spring flowering bulbs, as there are also Autumn flowering ones too. Most of us probably have some bulbs already in our gardens, which come up every Spring to surprise with a splash of colour, but are you really making the most of bulbs in your garden? Bulbs are great in pots or containers. I would refer to this use as ‘seasonal displays’. These are usually mixed with Spring bedding plants such as Wallflowers, Pansies, Forget-me-nots and Bellis. Their use here is twofold; most Spring bedding plants just offer green foliage through the early Spring, so some carefully chosen very early flowering bulbs can be planted with them to push through and give a burst of colour before anything else has started. I would be bold and bright here, they’ll be on their own amongst lots of green foliage so don’t be subtle. There are some great bright orange or red small Tulips that will flower in March, even pushing through snow to do so.
105 the riverside journals
Images: Richard Lucas
Their secondary use in mixed plantings is when the other plants are flowering so, depending on your preference, you could select colours to either complement or contrast with the other blooms, and you could even plant some April flowering bulbs and some May flowering bulbs to give you two separate bursts of colour. Tulips are a garden designer’s favourite as they come in almost any colour that you may need for your designs, from pastels through to deep moody shades and then colours that just jump out at you. Most varieties of Tulips are, however, a little unpredictable about flowering reliably in future years. Tulips originate in the warm and dry climate of the eastern Mediterranean, quite a different climate to ours. Therefore, with Tulip bulbs only, I usually throw away the bulbs after they have flowered and buy new ones each year. This also means you can change your colour scheme every Spring! Daffodils, or Narcissus as they are known botanically, are probably most people’s favourite Spring bulb, and unlike Tulips they are suited to our climate and will multiply readily when planted out in the garden. So, whilst we are still on the subject of temporary seasonal displays, I will use the dwarf varieties of Daffodils in this way, so they do not overpower other plants with their size. These can also be the early flowerers, the Daffodil ‘February Gold’ lives up to its name, or they can flower later to mix in with other plants. With these bulbs I always replant them in permanent positions when emptying out the Spring displays. Tulips and Daffodils are not the only bulbs for Spring pots and containers, you could use any Spring flowering bulb such as Crocus, Hyacinths, Alliums and a personal favourite of mine, Fritillaries. When bulbs are permanently planted into garden areas, in order to flourish and spread, it is known as ‘naturalising’. Careful thought should be given to these plantings as they will be there for decades, and also it’s not easy to remove them and start again if you change your mind. Snowdrops and Bluebells are great examples of bulbs that naturalise, we’ve all seen them looking spectacular in huge drifts in woodland settings, and this is how we should plant up our bulbs for naturalising in our garden areas. If you happen to have great expanses of lawn to mow and maintain why not change some to long grass areas and plant up with similar huge drifts of whatever Spring bulb fills your requirements. If you have the space don’t think hundreds, think thousands, and all of one variety for the biggest impact, or if you want some variation have groups of single varieties. If you go for the long grass and daffodil combination remember it can be followed by perennial wild flowers, which will give you midsummer colour and attract bees and butterflies too. Now, back to Tulips, they also make great cut flowers, so buy some bulbs just for cutting, plant them somewhere in the vegetable garden, or even better under glass or in a polytunnel so that the flowers themselves are sheltered from the weather. The extra heat in an unheated greenhouse will give even earlier blooms. All you have to do is choose what colour and type of flower you like, and something that goes with, or contrasts against, your interior decor. Apart from cut flowers, bulbs are good in pots for indoor displays too, Dwarf Daffodils, Grape Hyacinths, Dwarf Tulips and Hyacinths all look good in pots, kept cold to develop and allow the roots to grow, then brought into the house when in bud. Grow in simple terracotta pots, or plastic pots to drop into more ornate containers. Hyacinths and some varieties of Daffodils will have the added attraction of filling the house with scent too. Of course, in the Spring you can buy flowering bulbs in pots or Tulips and Daffodils as cut flowers, but there’s something very satisfying about growing your own, and you can choose the exact colour too, so do some homework first and then go and buy loads of Spring bulbs – you won’t be disappointed. Happy bulb planting! Richard Richardlucasgardens.com

Why Which Double Glazing Installer Homeowners Choose Is Important?

W
hen a homeowner commits to making improvements to their abode one of the hardest choices they face is finding a reputable installer who they can be certain will a) do a quality job and b) stay in business, as the last thing anyone wants is to be scammed or left out of pocket due to negligent workmanship, or indeed a few years down the line find that the “guarantee” is not worth the paper it is written on. To assist householders and give them greater peace of mind when appointing an installation company, consumer champions Which? established an endorsement scheme labelled ‘Which? Trusted Traders’. Back in 2014 the region’s largest independent double glazing manufacturers and installers, Hazlemere Window Company, joined this prestigious scheme after they passed an intense assessment process, proving that they met the strict requirements set out by Which? and satisfy the high standards they expect of a local and reliable trader. To be recognised in this way is an extremely prestigious achievement for any supplier, particularly as 25% of traders fail during the assessment stage. It demonstrates to customers that those who achieve Which? Trusted Trader status have proven themselves as having been trustworthy up to that point, and that they are firmly committed to offering complete fairness and transparency at all times. Having such status enables us to display the Which? Trusted Traders logo on all marketing materials which will give customers added confidence when choosing a double glazing supplier ahead of any other local installation company. Which? Trusted Traders also provides its own ombudsman service which supplies an independent dispute resolution whenever any issues arise between a customer and scheme member. This is just the latest in a series of industry recognised accreditations that Hazlemere Window Company Ltd holds, as they are also FENSA Registered Installers (No. 10589), ISO 9001 accredited for quality management and ISO 14001 for waste management, as they recycle all the old windows, doors and conservatories they remove. In addition Hazlemere provide an independent insurance backed warranty with every window or door or conservatory they install. Then in 2015 to further reinforce their credentials Hazlemere Windows became members of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), signing up to the GGF’s Consumer Code of Good Practice, ensuring any deposits paid by consumers are protected by the GGF’s Deposit Indemnity Fund. Some double glazing companies are sadly still renowned even in these more consumer informed times for dubious selling techniques – so it’s really little wonder that only around 6% of Which? members say they trust glazing firms. No wonder then, that the vast majority of Which? members who took part in the survey in 2014 decided to use independent double glazing installers to carry out work on their properties rather than use big brand names, with some citing the traders’ need to maintain their strong reputations in the community as the reason for going local. In 2014, Which? asked 2,872 of their members questions concerning their experience of double glazing installation and companies. All had double glazing installed in the previous five years with either a local/independent firm or a big name such as Anglian, Everest, Safestyle or Zenith. Which? asked them to rate the double glazing supplier they used for various aspects of their experience, such as quotation process and customer service. This Which? double glazing company customer satisfaction survey carried out last year showed that the big four national brands – Zenith (40% customer satisfaction), Safestyle (54%), Anglian (56%) and Everest (59%) did not do as well as local independent companies and traders who had a much higher customer satisfaction rating of 82%. Which? is unbiased and are independent consumer champions, who say they buy every product they test and don’t accept at face value what any “advertising” might claim, so it is therefore advice consumers can trust. When deciding to replace windows or doors Which? advises that you should contact at least three glaziers and organise for them to visit you at home. Some double glazing companies still sadly use aggressive sales techniques. If whilst in your home a double glazing sales person starts offering time-sensitive discounts, or calls ‘head office’ and similar scams, then alarm bells should sound. The aim of each visit to your home should be for you to end up with three comparable quotes in writing and to meet the firm that will be spending days or weeks at your property. A good double glazing supplier should never pressure you into a sale – never agree to anything on the spot. As Which? advises “remember that the cheapest quote might not be the best”. Recommendations count for a lot in the glazing industry. If friends, family or neighbours can’t help, look at reviews for local glazing companies on Which? Trusted Traders. Seek evidence of appropriate specialties – as for example a double glazing company might be experts in aluminium or UPVC double glazing, or casement and sash windows or, say, timber windows. Those that rate well on customer service skills are more likely to resolve any future problems with the product or the installation.

September – A Time To Study! Since 1998, the number of stay at home workers has increased by 2 million, with the majority of them living in the South of England. With benefits such as choosing your own hours, wearing your own clothes (including your dressing gown) and no stressful commute it’s obvious why more of us are choosing careers that allow us to work from home. Working with professionals living in the Surrey Hills, country estates, and city apartments Aspect Kitchens are now designing as many bespoke studies as they are kitchens. Business men and women want somewhere they can shut themselves away, and likewise families with children and teenagers want somewhere to study away from distractions.
Technology has not only influenced business, but the way children and adults are learning too.
Albert Einstein once said: “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” Although it is said that a messy desk makes a creative mind, it is important for the room to maximise potential, encourage proactivity and increase motivation. It might be that you only use your study to hide away the computer or file away paperwork. You may need a desk big enough for two large monitors, and A3 drawings, or you’d like some floor to ceiling bookcases, and a writing desk. The best way to achieve this is to speak with an experienced designer. They will help you create effective storage and a usable design that will complement the style of your home. If you have the luxury of choosing where to have your study, consider your view. Overlooking the garden instead of a busy road will be calmer, and if you have children it’s a good way to keep tabs on them whilst you work and they play. Think about lighting, especially if you are using a computer, and ALWAYS HAVE A PLANT! Your study should reflect your personality as much as any other room, but if you intend to use it for business keep in mind that it needs to look professional not homely. Source comfortable furniture, and if you want to add a burst of colour why not have a statement rug, or art piece? And lastly something to think about: “If you don’t have the room in the house for your perfect thinking space, there’s always the end of the garden. September; a month that to a lot of us means change; the nights are drawing in, we’ve had our summer holiday and with children back at school the commute to work takes twice as long as it did in August.
With the dramatic change in technology and gadgets, the last 10 years has seen transformations in both business and education. Online courses are encouraging adult learning, children are staying in education for longer, and it’s never been easier to start your own business. This is why a home office is now as sought after as an upstairs loo. So how do you incorporate much needed working space into your home? It’s not unusual to curl up on the sofa with a laptop, especially if working from home means ordering groceries online, using social media or speaking to relatives abroad; but the difference between an A* and the people who fail or end up back in an work office lies in their environment.

any people dream of a new kitchen worktop with which to impress family and friends when they visit during the festive season, whilst others hanker after a beautiful new stone fireplace perhaps with a solid fuel stove taking pride of place in their living room. If this includes you then you should act as soon as possible to ensure that your dream comes true. The run up to Christmas is a very busy time for stoneCIRCLE, the manufacturer of tailor made stone products with showrooms in Basingstoke and Newbury. It normally takes just 5 days from templating for your worktop to be manufactured and fitted in your kitchen. However in the months before Christmas the templaters become extremely busy and if you leave it too late, you run the risk of not being able to have it fitted until the New Year. If it’s a fireplace that you are after, stoneCIRCLE is a supplier of Chesney fireplaces and solid fuel stoves and also manufactures bespoke stone fireplaces for those who want something designed specifically for the room in which it will sit. Whichever you choose be warned that it can take at least a couple of months to choose the fireplace or stove and get it installed, especially as installers become increasingly busy as winter approaches. You can see examples of the natural and engineered stone products that the company manufactures such as kitchen worktops, bathroom vanities and fireplaces, as well as Chesney’s fireplaces and stoves on show in its Basingstoke and Newbury showrooms. The Newbury showroom also features a huge stone gallery where you can view hundreds of different types of stone in slab form and choose the one that you want. here are lots of ‘C’ words when talking about cheese these days! Crafting, Curating, Combining, Creating and it can difficult trying to put together a cheeseboard that not only works together but also pleases everyone especially when there are intolerance issues to take into account too. First let’s talk about the different milk types. Cow’s milk cheeses have a rich buttery texture and the great hard cheeses like Cheddar and Gruyère immediately come to mind, but there is also Brie de Meaux with its melting quality and, from October to March, the decadently gorgeous Vacherin du Haut Doubs or Mont d’Or as it is also known. The aged cheeses are easier to digest as they acquire their flavours through the enzymes slowly breaking down; and Parmesan for instance, which has at least two years if not more time on the maturing shelves, is a perfect example of a ‘healthy’ cheese being low in fat and high in protein and a great food to eat in small quantities. Goat’s milk cheeses we see a lot more these days and the curds are easy to transform into fresh cheeses. The structure of the milk is closest to human milk by the way, and therefore one to try as their first cheese – especially for children – easy to digest and light with a refreshing sharpness when young, and the more aged cheeses have a superb sweetness to the milk. Ewe’s milk cheeses are becoming more and more popular; Pecorino for instance. The milk has a silky texture with an earthy sweet quality that is absolutely unique. Again the structure of the milk breaks down easily when made into cheese and therefore is good for anyone having trouble digesting cow’s milk. The softer cheeses have quite a strong, rich and gamey quality and the hard and aged cheeses have the ‘lanolin’ sweetness coming through the earthy woody flavours. Then we have the added consideration of whether the cheese is made with a traditional rennet, the coagulant that breaks down the solids from the whey, which is an animal by-product, or vegetarian which can be man-made as a serum or in some cases artichoke thistles are used. I prefer the traditional rennet, unless the cheese is made with the ‘flower’ enzymes, rather than a man-made vegetarian rennet simply because there is a natural affinity to this process for the progression of flavours, textures and taste. But in order to please everyone, a lot of British cheeses are made using the vegetarian rennet; many more than their Continental counterparts.

Hard Soft Blue Cheeseboard
Sharpham Goat Brie
Goat Ewe Cow Board Now we’ve got all the mystery about cheese over with let’s get down to creating interesting selections. Whether a small dinner party or family gatherings or parties, an array of cheese is a great centrepiece and one where sharing is a natural way of enjoyment. For festive occasions we can push the boat out but consider this; do you really want a cheeseboard as part of the Christmas meal or do you want to enjoy it on its own later or the next day? If you want it as part of the meal then have the cheese right at the end after the pudding; and have just three cheeses, say a Montgomery Cheddar with Colston Bassett Stilton and either a goat log like Bosworth Ash or the stunning British Camembert from Hampshire, Tunworth. For a Continental selection choose a Gruyère style like two-year aged Comte d’Estive, or a Pyrenees ewe’s milk cheese Ossau, or an Italian Pecorino from Tuscany or Sardinia with a perfectly ripe Brie de Meaux or the Burgundy washed rind Epoisses, and a blue such as Fourme d’Ambert from the Auvergne or a Gorgonzola Naturale from Lombardy. Just having the three cheeses will not be too daunting for your guests; and you can have other cheeses for later or the next day that can be quite adventurous like a Brie with truffles, or the oozing rich Vacherin Mont d’Or or an equally rich and melting Portuguese cheese with its bosky herbal flavours, Serra d’Estrela – made from ewe’s milk with the thistle flower used to separate the curds. Accompaniments such as grapes, apples, walnuts and a fruit ‘cheese’ made with Quince, Blackcurrant or Damson work well with all cheeses.
Cheese Patricia Michelson www.lafromagerie.co.uk
For more formal cheeseboards think about five to eight cheeses rather than loads of little pieces. They look better on the board and you can think it through in a way that each one complements the next. There is an art to this, and one where your cheesemonger or specialist cheese shop can help. But here are a few tips. Think about what you like, then think about what you are serving as a meal or what you want the cheese for – is it lunch, supper, dinner, snack? Also are you going to enjoy a glass of wine, beer or cider maybe? If so, is it going to be a light, medium or strong drink? There are cheeses for Champagne – such as Brillat Savarin, Camembert and also Stilton believe it or not! We’ve been matching cheese to whisky recently too – Irish washed rinds such as Gubbeen and Durrus, or Appleby’s Cheshire, or the wonderful rich creamy ewe’s milk Wigmore from Berkshire. So there is no time of day that cheese doesn’t fit the bill. Breakfast – what about Gouda with slices of baked ham and tomatoes with rye bread? Lunch – let’s tear open a crusty baguette to enjoy with Brie or Cheddar? Snack time – fancy a nibble of Parmesan with slices of apple and pear for an energy boost? Dinner – and you just want cheese then Beaufort the Prince of Savoie Gruyère, a crumbly goat cheese such as Chabichou from Poitiers and the big burst of rich blue Roquefort; serve with a side salad and crusty bread together with a glass of wine and you have a rather wonderful meal.

Rowley’s Restaurant
T
by Cathy Piddington
his fine restaurant in Jermyn Street, St James’s, is perfectly situated close to the heart of theatreland. Rowley’s Restaurant is housed today in the very same building where the famous Walls meat business began many years ago, and to this day displays a wealth of history with its beautifully preserved interior. On arrival we were greeted by smiling, courteous staff who seated us in a window seat at the front of the restaurant, which was buzzing for a Thursday evening. The décor featured tiled floors and lots of dark polished wood and beveled mirrors, creating an Old English feel of elegance. Our first impressions were that this was a very relaxed and warming establishment with an interesting mix of clientele – both business people and couples seated alongside tables of families. We were very excited as we had read and heard so much about Rowley’s and were indeed delighted to be invited along to experience their menu. I opted for the Prawn and Avocado Cocktail for my starter and my guest chose the H. Forman & Son Smoked Salmon with buttered brown bread. This was accompanied by a lovely glass of Prosecco. The portion sizes were good and the quality of the ingredients perfect. For our main course we chose the Chateaubriand or Côte de Boeuf for two people. The steak was served with Roquefort Sauce and a selection of vegetables and unlimited French fries. This was the first time I had chosen this dish and Rowley’s certainly was the place to be as the steak was cooked to absolute perfection and there was plenty to eat for the two of us. We were more than satisfied and full with these two superb courses, but it would appear rude not to try dessert and I managed a scoop of delicious Union Artisan Vanilla Ice Cream and my guest, being a steamed pudding kind of girl, opted for the Sticky Toffee Pudding served with ice cream, and our meal concluded with two lovely coffees. To summarise our impressions of Rowley’ Restaurant: the training of their staff and front of house was second to none – they really could not have been more attentive. The décor is truly lovely, with the ambiance creating a buzzing steak restaurant. The tender meat is sourced from the excellent Lake District Farmers’ Association and the fish comes from H. Forman & Son and Daily Fish Suppliers based in Fish Island London. Even the fine wines are bought from neighbouring wine suppliers Berry Brothers & Rudd. Using the finest of suppliers and giving the customers a competitively priced menu with the best quality ingredients is undoubtedly a recipe for success as, incidentally, is their renown for the unlimited amount of delicious French fries served! Our conclusion – we will certainly be returning very soon, along with our partners who are both very much steak eaters and who we are sure will agree with Rowley’s’ website’s claim to be “one of the capital’s finest steak restaurants”.

It’s the perfect show for ballet fans old and new, with enchanting choreography set to Tchaikovsky’s score to tell the story of Clara and her magical nutcracker doll. Their adventures see Clara and the Nutcracker combat the Mouse King, and join the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier on a wonderful journey through the glistening Land of Snow to a kingdom made entirely of sweets.
This family show is the perfect introduction to dance for the very young. Now a quintessential Christmas tradition, it has been seen by more than half a million people since coming to this London theatre in 1998. The mixture of storytelling, spectacle and magic is based on Raymond Briggs’ familiar story and features Howard Blake’s much loved music and lyrics. A young boy’s snowman miraculously comes to life on Christmas Eve and they set off on an adventure to the North Pole, where they meet dancing penguins, reindeer, a snow princess and Father Christmas – and escape the clutches of Jack Frost.

Combined with entertainment, food and service to match, it’s one of Ascot’s premier days and is designed to encourage new spectators to follow the sport. There is a spectacular field for end-of-season championship races across each of the five QIPCO British Champions Series categories: 10-furlong horses, milers, sprinters (six furlongs), long distance horses (two miles) and fillies and mares. This is a great opportunity to see the season’s equine stars and their owners, with the top trainers and jockeys.

On Marisol’s Parlour Cult figure of American pop art Marisol’s sculptures are brought to life through the exuberant mise-en-scène by John-Paul Pietrus together with stylist Lucia Liu. Models figure out themselves like moving sculptures that evoke a Cubist fantasy brought to life alongside the cheeky hint of pop culture residing in Marisol’s artistic oeuvre. An interesting twist that alludes to the eccentricity of Marisol’s multiculturalism, herself being Venezuelan born in Paris and residing in New York, would be John-Paul Pietrus’s mixed ethnic background seeping into the images. As the photographer loves to call himself “your asian persuasion” he does a cheeky take on Marisol by casting Asian models to realise this story. There’s also a persistent sort of nostalgia operating here as it is Pietrus’s revisiting of the artist’s work that he referenced sometime in the earlier part of his career. He’s always been meaning to redo a fashion story on her with a bigger production budget and this sealed the deal.
Revisiting Marisol (Through The Lens of Your Asian Persuasion)
Humour and Beyond Being a fashion photographer coming from an art background, John-Paul shares that the fashion world always has this cliché with regards to fashion with an art slant being better or more valid at that. He wittingly shares his take on it as “fashion + art = fart.” He shares that “if the work is good, whether or not it has an ‘art-infusion,’ it’s good and vice versa. Additionally, not all art is good art.” Meanwhile, with anything else, what’s crucial to note with John-Paul is his good sense of humour on how he can make the mundane seem like vivid imagery from some kaleidoscopic otherworldly reality or it just boils down to his sense of humour. We sit down and get a feel of it with him.
GC: There’s always a potent sense of humour with your images, so tell me what’s a cheeky instance here? JPP: The humour, the playfulness is that the models are sometimes models and sometimes sculptures. Sometimes they’re dressed in clothes but sometimes they’re dressed in painted wooden boxes. GC: What was your favourite piece from the shoot? JPP: The Valentino diamond lace dress, the painted priest’s outfit and the Ashish. GC: How do you make sense of being Oriental and this certain tendency towards maximalism and a certain sort of kitsch? JPP: Eurasian, to be precise. I adore kitsch and maximalism, so this story felt natural to me. GC: Had you been the lovechild of two artists, who would they be? JPP: The lovechild of Koons and Duchamp in this scenario. GC: If you were to do an Oriental intervention to George Michael’s Freedom, who are the models you’d cast? JPP: He Sui, Fei Fei Sun, Soo Joo Park, Tao Okamoto and Devon Aoki.

Future Tense Other than the editorials left and right for different fashion glossies around the globe featuring the most exciting faces in the fashion industry, John-Paul is currently working on a coffee table book that includes some sketchbook pages of his very own personal memories. So, altogether a deeply personal and meaningful book down the line is something to look forward to from Pietrus.
