The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be staged in Sochi, Russia, but Lake Placid will celebrate its Olympic heritage right here in the Adirondacks this winter! Lake Placid has hosted the world twice: in 1932 and 1980. But did you know that it has been a winter destination since long before it hosted those Olympic Winter Bobsledding Games? We’ve been playing in the snow here for over 100 years!

Bobsledding

Though the Adirondack village had become a popular summer destination for Northeast city dwellers in the late 1800’s, Lake Placid’s winter sports history began with Melvil Dewey, of Dewey Decimal System fame and founder of the Lake Placid Club. Dewey refused to listen to skeptics, extending the Lake Placid Club’s season through the winter of 1904-’05. By 1914, Dewey had garnered the support of the community as he succeeded in creating America’s First Winter Resort. Lake Placid’s place on the world competitive sports stage began in the 1920’s, and it all began with speed skating. A different type of skates ushered in the next winter sports economic driver.

The Olympic venues built for the 1932 Games were designed for future use. Of course, Lake Placid again welcomed the world for the 1980 Olympic Winter Games. The 1980 Games had a great impact on the infrastructure of the community. In addition to the updated Olympic facilities, the private sector made sizable investments for the Games. A great sense of pride in welcoming the world. Today, the area continues to beckon visitors to play in the snow, primarily due to the increased interest in winter outdoor recreational activities possible in the Adirondack wilderness. Most popular summer activities simply take on a slight twist in the frosty winter. Many summer hiking trails become well-traveled ski and snowshoe trails. Golf courses take on new life as cross-country ski centers. The Adirondack peaks are always accessible for a cold-weather hike. Area lakes are great for ice skating, and cross-country skiing. They also draw legions of ice fishermen, and many play host to popular fishing derbies throughout the winter. And of course, Whiteface Mountain, host to the 1980 Olympics, is the place to be for a world-class downhill skiing and boarding experience. Where else can you check out the view from the top of the ski jumps, take a ride down a toboggan chute and slide out onto Mirror Lake, glide across a frozen lake on a dogsled? Of course there’s always shopping on Main Street, and a variety of options to please your palate, from pizza to fine dining!
