Now in its 47th year, the Lake Placid Horse Shows (LPHS) hosts more than 100 classes of competition in four show rings each week with all levels of competition ranging from children on ponies in leadline classes to top riders and Olympic veterans competing in the Grand Prix ring. Both weeks are USEF ‘AA’ rated for hunters and 6* rated for jumpers and offer nearly $550,000 in prize money! LPHS regularly make improvements to their immaculate facility and have been honored by the National Show Hunter Hall of Fame as one of the nation’s Top-Ten horse shows and Top-Six Derbys of 2015.

The horse shows offer fun for the whole family. There is even a Doggie Costume Contest! The vendor area offers some of the best shopping in the Adirondacks featuring local Adirondack artisans, products, clothing and apparel, real estate, photography, a variety of equine related shops, a booth with official Lake Placid Horse Shows merchandise, and a variety of food. The non-stop equestrian action starts at 8:00 am each day. The horse shows are located at the North Elba Show Grounds on Route 73 in Lake Placid, directly across from the ski jumps. Admission to the horse show is $2.00 on weekdays and $5.00 on weekend days. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free. Admission is half priced with a Price Chopper Advantage card. Discounts are offered for groups of 20 or more. Tickets are available for purchase at the entrance gate. It is not necessary to purchase tickets in advance. There is ample general seating available. For more information, contact our office. For a behind-the-scenes look at the shows, join the guided walking tour offered Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 11:30 AM. The

Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway is a Can’t Miss By Jon Lundin, ORDA Director of Communications Photography by ORDA/Whiteface Lake Placid

As summer arrives so do the visitors, who want to experience what we’re fortunate enough to every single day. Some will come to the region to compete, whether it’s the Lake Placid Marathon, Lake Placid Ironman or the other various events and competitions that dot the summer schedule. Others come just to relax, escape the grind of daily life and take in the breathtaking surroundings. A summer attraction is the Whiteface Mountain Veterans’ Memorial Highway, located in Wilmington, NY, just eight-miles east of Lake Placid. For the some 70-thousand people who make the eight-mile long drive from the base to the summit… this is a “can’t miss.” At 4,867 feet in elevation, Whiteface Mountain is New York State’s fifth highest peak and the only one of the 46 high peaks, within the Adirondack Park, that’s accessible by car. In fact, the highway pre-dates the ski resort. The Whiteface Mountain ski center was built in 1958, but this engineering marvel opened to the public in 1936. In 1929 Franklin D. Roosevelt kicked off the project when he governed the Empire State. Seven years later, as President of the United States, he officially opened the Highway and dedicated it to the Veterans of World War I. In 1985, Governor Mario Cuomo rededicated the

Highway to Veterans of all wars. Today, plaques can be found mounted on the north side of the Whiteface Castle. Last summer, $12 million in state funding, through Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, enabled vital repairs as the Highway endured multiple landslides, heavy rains and earthquakes, in addition to the region’s harsh weather, high winds and freezing conditions. The roadway was re-surfaced, re-graded and the outdated drainage system was replaced. The Highway ends about 300 feet shy of the summit. During Roosevelt’s dedication ceremony, the wheelchair bound President said, “I wish very much that it were possible for me to walk up the few remaining feet to the actual top of the mountain. Someday they are going to make it possible for people who cannot make the little climb to go up there in a comfortable and easy elevator.”

That “Someday” came quickly, just three years later a 426-foot long tunnel was dug, leading visitors to an elevator which would carry them 276 feet up to the summit. Visitors can also reach the summit by making their way through a hiking trail or by using a stone staircase to the top.


An alpine-style gatehouse, constructed in 1934, and Lake Stevens, a small, pristine pond, give the Highway a picturesque start. As you ascend the mountain, there are opportunities to pull off the road and take in the scenery that includes several of the region’s high peaks, lakes, ponds and streams. At several of the stops, there are also picnic tables for you to enjoy a snack or lunch. And if you keep your eyes wide open, perhaps you’ll be able to spot a Bicknell’s Thrush, or two. The endangered bird spends its winters in the Caribbean, but during the summer months it migrates to the higher elevation forests of the northeast, including Whiteface Mountain. It’s believed that there are only 50,000 of these six to seven and a half inch, olive, brown and grey birds still left in existence, and only a handful make it to the mountain each year, so you’ll have to watch closely. As you begin to approach the summit, the Castle, which sits high atop the mountain, will begin to come into view. The Castle was built with the granite excavated during the Highway’s construction. In addition to the Castle, the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center will also come into view. Built in 1961, the Center measures chemical species both in the gas phase and dissolved in cloud, fog and rain water. At the summit, a spectacular 360-degree view awaits you. On clear day, and there are many during the summer months, visitors can see as far north into Montreal, Canada. Also at the summit, guests can enjoy gourmet rustic cuisine, served in the Castle Café, or shop for a souvenir in the Brookside Apparel Store. The cost is $15 for vehicle and driver and just $8 for additional passengers. Guests can also cycle up the highway for only $8. Group rates are also available.
