We’d like to personally thank all the families and alumni who came to support us these last few months.

PARENTS

These eight young men attended our 4-week summer school program after learning about it at a regional admissions event that was hosted by parents and alumni. Greetings RMA Family! What an exciting time to be a part of a wonderful place like Riverside. When I look around at our gorgeous facilities and interact with our exceptional faculty, staff, parents, and alumni, I get so encouraged about the future of our great school! We, in the Admissions and Marketing teams, consider ourselves fortunate to share the good news about what RMA has done, and continues to do, for boys every day. Riverside is a remarkable place worth telling people about! In keeping with that theme, I’d like to report some of the exciting things we’ve been doing since the spring. Over the past six months, your admissions team has been extremely busy recruiting great cadets and working with amazing families. Every month since January we have enrolled more new cadets than at any time in at least 10 years, and since April, our staff has conducted 14 regional recruiting events in five different states and three countries! In each place, we were supported by distinguished alumni and willing parents who gave of their time, talent, testimony, and treasure to help us recruit great cadets into the Corps. Each prospective family that met us was so appreciative to be able to meet and talk with parents who have traveled the road they’re now on and to speak with alumni who have applied what they learned at RMA to successful lives and careers. These events not only help in recruiting, but they also provide an opportunity for local families and alumni to network, and in some cases, meet for the first time. Our goal over the next year is to continue using all of our assets (alumni, cadets, parents, employees, and friends) to help fill the Corps of Cadets with boys who can continue the legacy of the people who’ve gone before them. We plan on hitting the road and building on the momentum that has been achieved this spring. Please pay attention to the RMA Facebook page and the Admissions page to see where we’ll be this fall. If you would like to host or support an event or volunteer to talk with a prospective family, please let me know! For the Good of the Corps,

Deem, MacFarlane, and Summerour Join 5 RMA Brothers at U.S. Military Service Academies By Adriane K. Seymour, Director of Communications

For students who would like to experience a military environment while getting a first-class education, the five Service academies – the U.S. Military Academy; the U.S. Naval Academy; the U.S. Air Force Academy; the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy offer an outstanding education and full four-year scholarships. Upon graduation, cadets will have an estimated educational value of over $400,000. The competition to get in is fierce. Admissions criteria include: high school academic performance; standardized test scores (SAT or ACT); athletics and extracurricular activities; leadership experience and community involvement; and lastly, a congressional letter of recommendation (not required by the Coast Guard Academy). Three cadets from the graduating Class of 2014 received their appointments from President Obama in May and began their training period in July. These graduates are C/COL Harrison Summerour, C/CPT Jacob Deem, and C/CPT John Mark MacFarlane. Cadets Deem and Summerour were both selected by their congressional representatives to be the principal nominee in their districts, automatically receiving an appoint to the Academy of their choice. Dr. Kaufman Delivers 2014 Commencement Speech By Adriane K. Seymour, Director of Communications

Dr. Daniel J. Kaufman is no stranger to Riverside’s campus, faculty, and cadets. Serving on the RMA Board of Trustees for six years, he knows the extraordinarily dedicated people who devote their time and talents to the young men of RMA. Dr. Kaufman, President and CEO of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, delivered this year’s commencement speech to 91 RMA Class of 2014 graduates. Preceding his current duties, he was founding president of Georgia Gwinnett College, the first new public four-year Georgia college in over 100 years. Upon his 1968 graduation from the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) - West Point, he commissioned as a second lieutenant of Armor and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree. He holds a master’s in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a Ph.D. of Philosophy in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Formerly a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, Dr. Kaufman served as Dean of the Academic Board and Chief Academic Officer at the USMA. Following retirement from active duty, he was honored by the British government as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He served as a member of the National Security Council staff in the White House and in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He served as Special Assistant to three Chiefs of Staff of the Army. Brigadier General Kaufman was deeply engaged in developing the National Military Academy of Afghanistan, which opened in Kabul in April 2005. He is also the author of several books. Dr. Kaufman’s challenge to our graduates focused on leadership and commitment in a changing world. “Rededicate yourselves as individuals and as future leaders, ensuring that you do not become complacent, that you continue to grow and serve and respond to a world that changes at a seemingly ever increasing pace,” Kaufman stated. “Every generation faces uncertainty. As the world continues to change, we are going to need leaders who are comfortable with uncertainty. Regardless of nationality, our world needs the services of talented leaders no less today than it did in any previous year. So, devote yourself to the task of preparing yourself to the fullest extent of your abilities for the challenges and responsibilities you will confront in the years ahead. Leadership is not easy; if it were, anyone could do it,” said Kaufman. In conclusion, he advised, “Be ready, for your time to lead is rapidly approaching. Do not underestimate the magnitude of the task that confronts you. Prepare yourself for a lifetime of service, service that will witness changes that seem as unimaginable today as did those that transformed that far-away world of 30 years ago.”

Georgia Certificate of Merit Awarded to RMA Cadets By Julie A. Smith, Multimedia Manager

Riverside Military Academy’s C/MSG Alexei Joya, C/SGT Samuel Manzo, C/SSG Charles Nunez, C/2LT Tucker Pearson, C/SFC Toan Vuong, C/PFC Justin Wilson, and C/SGT Zhichen Yan were each selected as Class of 2015 Georgia Certificate of Merit winners. Each year, the State of Georgia, in cooperation with the University of Georgia, recognizes juniors who hold outstanding academic records throughout their first three years of high school. The Certificate of Merit program was established by the University of Georgia in 1959, and the State of Georgia became a co-sponsor in 1970. The program seeks to identify our state’s most academically talented students and encourages them to explore honors programs and scholarship opportunities. C/SGT Yan, an international boarding student from China, 10

was chosen for this award during his first semester taking English language classes at RMA! “This is a big accomplishment for anyone, especially for an ESL student that has been here for less than 6 months – that is a staggering rate of growth and showcases his work ethic,” said Lara Moore, one of Yan’s ESL teachers. “To that end, most research indicates that while it can take a new ESL student a couple of years to become conversational in basic English, it takes anywhere from 5 to 7 years for the student to develop a solid academic vocabulary, which is an entirely different skillset. As a new ESL student,Yan’s accomplishment is very rare and profound, indeed,” stated Moore. We congratulate these exceptional students on their dedication to academics at Riverside!

RMA Instructors Continue their Advanced Education Riverside welcomes cadets from all over the world, and many of these cadets come without a full mastery of the English language. In order to help these cadets as they simultaneously learn English and their coursework, five RMA teachers have taken advantage of a state grant - Georgia ESOL for Content Area Teachers Project (GECAT), designed to encourage and improve the teaching of students whose first language is not English. These teachers began studies for a University of Georgia-sponsored certificate in ESL proficiency last spring, completing their first course in May. This course focused primarily on understanding and incorporating the backgrounds and resources that students raised in

other cultures bring to our classrooms. In the 2014-15 school year, they will take one course in fall and their final course in spring, focusing more specifically on classroom techniques. There is no cost to the teachers or to Riverside for this training, although the Gainesville area cohort enjoys RMA’s Sandy Beaver Center for Teaching and Learning as a host facility for the opening and closing sessions for each class. The teachers involved are Col. Bob Cagle (science), Mr. Andy Jobson (English), Mr. Jared Koldoff (social studies), Mr. Elijah Merrett (English), and Ms. Lara Moore (foreign language/ESL). These teachers hope to serve as mentors for other faculty who are looking for ways to help their foreign cadets succeed.

Kim Becomes a National Merit Scholarship Finalist By Julie A. Smith, Multimedia Manager RMA Class of 2014 graduate DoYeun Kim has been designated as a 2014 National Merit Scholarship Finalist. Around 1.5 million juniors from over 22,000 high schools entered the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Kim was one of approximately 16,000 semifinalists chosen in 2014. He competed with other semifinalists for an estimated 8,000 National Merit Scholarships totaling $35 million. Students had to fulfill several requirements, including submission of an essay and presenting a record of very high academic performance, in order to achieve the finalist level of competition and become eligible to earn the Merit Scholar title. In February, Kim received notification of his advancement to the finalist level of competition, and he was notified about his scholarship offer in early June. Kim was placed as third chair oboe in the 11th-12th grade All State Orchestra earlier this year, and he became the first Riverside band member to ever qualify for the All State Orchestra the previous year. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the RMA Horton Society, the Junior Engineering Technical Society-Technology Student Association (JETS-TSA), and the Science National Honor Society. Kim was also a nominee for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program in Music (Oboe). He is the son of Mr. Choong Hyun Kim and Mrs. Min Joung Kim of Seoul, South Korea. We congratulate DoYeun Kim for all of the hard work and dedication that led to his selection as a 2014 National Merit Scholarship Finalist. REVEILLE I SUMMER 2014

Letter from The Commandant In July, I had the privilege of joining alumnus Michael Sims,’13, for his 4th jump at the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning. He just completed his plebe year at West Point and was attending airborne training. I was visiting a Marine captain in my command. As Providence would have it, our individual duties brought us together for a few moments of fellowship before plunging out of a perfectly good aircraft. Thankfully, our parachutes functioned as designed and we had listened well to the fine jumpmasters assigned to the 1st Battalion of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. I linked up with Michael’s parents on the drop zone for a few moments. It seems a short time since we sat in the Admissions Office and strategized how to help their son gain entrance to the U. S. Military Academy. He will return there to welcome as plebes Class of 2014 alums Jacob Deem and John-Mark MacFarlane. Georgia Deputy Adjutant General (Commander of the GA Army National Guard) Brig. Gen. Joe Jarrard, West Point Sophomore Cadet Mac Sims, ’13, and RMA Commandant LtCol Kevin Jarrard all completed jumps at the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning on Thursday, July 10.

Airborne operations require a special kind of courage. I’m always terrified at the prospect of jumping and always elated by having jumped. It’s a strange mix of fear and joy. It helps to remember that I was not the first paratrooper, nor am I the last. None of my jumps have been as harrowing as that of the 504th PIR into Sicily 71 years ago. On that night, Rick Atkinson writes: “Fountains of red fire erupted from the beaches and anchorage… Pilots dove to the deck or swerved back to the sea, flinging paratroopers to the floor and tangling their static lines. Men fingered their rosary beads or vomited into their helmets. Bullets ripped through wings and fuselages, and the bay floors grew slick with blood… Men died in their planes, men died descending in their parachutes, and at least four were shot dead on the ground by comrades convinced they were Germans.” While we’re not necessarily preparing youngsters to leap to their deaths in the defense of liberty, it occurs to me that paratroopers and RMA cadets share the following qualities: GUTS. I’m referring here to raw physical courage, of facing our fears and overcoming them by decisive action. We instill this quality by rappelling from the 25 and 50 foot towers, entering the pool from the high-dive, and athletic competitions. Challenging cadets to face their fears in a controlled environment does not produce recklessness, but rather measured bravery developed by consistent practice. GRIT. What a wonderful word! Grit is best described as purposeful determination. “Stick-to-it-tiveness” would serve as a crude homemade synonym. Enduring the grind of life in the Corps of Cadets, subordinating individual desires to the needs of the organization, surviving what can often feel like drudgery, all of this works to make gritty young men who may persevere in the face of adversity.

Guts. Grit. Gumption.

GUMPTION. Initiative. Pluck. Creative problem-solving. This uniquely American “can-do” spirit is employed by cadets daily as they seek innovative solutions to the challenges of working together to complete common tasks. How do you persuade (persuasion is critical to leadership) classmates who speak different languages, or who may be homesick or grieving, to prepare the barracks for inspection, dress for a parade, or take pride in their company? I am looking forward to another year helping to instill Guts, Grit, and Gumption into the lives of the young men placed in our care. I pray that the good Lord will grant us wisdom and discernment as we seek to faithfully shepherd them towards manhood. For the Corps,

Chinese Studies Program Grows at Riverside (中国研究项目生长在河畔) By Mr. Mark Reedy, ’92, Chinese Studies Instructor

In appreciation of the immense impact China will have on the world, as well as the large numbers of Chinese students that study at RMA now, we've embarked on an ambitious effort to set up a Chinese Studies program. Riverside offers a unique international environment, thanks in great part to a robust population of Chinese and other Asian exchange students. In fact, RMA has among the largest number of Chinese exchange students of any high school in the United States. At Riverside, cadets can hear, learn, and speak Chinese every day. To make the most of this unique REVEILLE I SUMMER 2014

opportunity, we've launched a focused program of academic study and extracurricular activities. Our Chinese Studies curriculum gives cadets a chance to develop fluency in the Mandarin language while also learning about Chinese people, history, government, and culture. Taking the leap into Mandarin is often quite intimidating. Despite the language's reputation, we've had exceptional success developing cadets' Chinese language abilities in our first year. Each student began with no real background in the Chinese language and culture. By March, these students were able to demonstrate a basic understanding of spoken and written Mandarin by passing a standardized oral and written Chinese government proficiency exam known as the HSK. One hundred percent of the students who remained in the program after the first semester earned the HSK Level 1 certification. These young men earned not only a credential of Chinese language ability used for assessment of applicants to Chinese

colleges, but also gained a professional credential that can be used in job applications. We hope more cadets will see the potential benefits of joining this successful program. As a measure of existing students' satisfaction levels, 100% of the cadets who are eligible to re-enroll next year have chosen to do so. 60% of our returning students earned A's this year, and 20% earned B's. If they choose, cadets in Chinese II will have an opportunity to be paired with Chinese roommates and study partners, building towards Chinese fluency and friendship. For students starting as freshmen and sophomores in the program, it is conceivable to develop basic fluency in Mandarin by graduation – without ever having lived in China! This would be an exceptional achievement for any high school student and presents an extraordinary opportunity at Riverside. Even for students who do not go on to specialize in China or Asia, our program gives a foundation to understand one of the most dynamic and economically important regions of our world and a language and culture whose roots spread across East Asia. It also provides a deeper understanding of language and linguistics, applicable to studying any foreign language. During Riverside's add/drop period this fall, we have three weeks to assess together whether a student is likely to succeed in Chinese studies. If it does not seem like a good fit, a cadet may switch to another language without penalty or switch out of language altogether, as appropriate. Eligibility Requirements: Both Englishspeaking and non-native-English cadets are welcome; any grade level, if already completed foreign language requirements for graduation; or you can take Chinese concurrent with another language (we've had multiple successes); juniors and below can enroll if they haven't yet completed their foreign language; and TALK TO YOUR COUNSELOR. Please consider this unique opportunity and help us to grow the Chinese Studies program with increased participation as we enter its second year.

Riverside Represented at National Boys State Programs By Adriane K. Seymour, Director of Communications

Last November Georgia Boys State Director Phil Youngblood and the program’s Dean, Bob Beauchamp, toured the Riverside Military Academy campus and were so impressed with the campus facilities, the RMA Corps of Cadets, and Riverside that they chose to host the Georgia Boys State 2014 summer program on our campus this June. Over 300 outstanding rising male seniors descended on our campus for a comprehensive week-long leadership action course in state and local government in which they actively participated and studied Georgia’s political law, our court system, and parliamentary procedure. Delegates had hands-on opportunities to learn the political process by organizing a mythical 51st state in which each level of government is managed by peer-elected representatives. The Boys State summer session also included daily visitation by representatives from a variety of city municipalities, GA state departments, and elected officials. Riverside is extremely proud to have six of our current cadets selected for this premier national leadership program for young men. C/2LT Robert Pee, C/SSG Albert Picken, C/SSG Chase Nunez, and C/SFC JeJuan McCalston were selected from their district American Legion Posts to participate in the Georgia Boys State program. C/1SG Joshua Kreitzer was selected by his Post to attend the Florida Boys State, and C/2LT Tucker Pearson was selected to represent his Post at the Minnesota Boys State. During the MN Boys State, Cadet Pearson was named Mayor of St. Pete, MN, and “Outstanding Boys Stater from St. Pete.” He then served in a county role as sheriff before winning the elected position of Governor of Boys State Minnesota. He was named 1st Senator and Primary Delegate to Boys Nation held in Washington, D.C., and was awarded Outstanding Boys Stater for the State of Minnesota. He was also the recipient of the Chic and Bill Zweiner Award. The week of July 21, Tucker attended Boys Nation in D.C. representing the State of Minnesota. He had the opportunity to visit the Pentagon, The Tomb of the Unknowns, and senators and member of Congress. Cadet Pearson was named Commandant of the Marine Corps at Boys Nation. 16

Hawaii Trip Plans

Marching Onward Photos from our recent HULA HUSTLE 5K & Fun Run!

The Riverside Military Academy Band and Chorus Hawaii trip planned for December 2014 is coming together nicely! In addition to marching in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade and performing a tribute concert at either the USS Arizona or USS Missouri, the RMA Band is working with Board of Trustees member Mrs. Margaret Blackstock to organize a third performance to be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Riverside alumni are buried in the Punchbowl Cemetery, and we are coordinating details for a tribute performance. We are so thankful for the steadfast support from parents, alumni, and the community during this trip-planning process. We have reached more than half of our fundraising goal and will continue raising funds to reach the remaining amount over the upcoming months. Supporters can continue to donate and sponsor a cadet’s airfare to Hawaii through the Sponsor A Seat to Hawaii (S.A.S.H.) program. Donations may be made online through the RMA website by specifying “Hawaii Trip” or by mail to the Advancement Office. Another current fundraising project is the Commissioning Project. Two pieces of music are being composed for the RMA Marching Band and RMA Concert Band and Men’s Chorus, and the new pieces will premier in Hawaii. Commissioning a piece of music is a naming opportunity for donors and a way to be part of Riverside’s musical history! A donor has agreed to commission one piece of music, and we are looking for another donor to match the donation and commission the second piece of music. Inquiries for the S.A.S.H. program or Commissioning Project can be directed to Amanda Griffin in the Advancement Office. We are thankful for this opportunity to perform in Hawaii for Pearl Harbor Memorial Day and are excited to represent Riverside on the Islands! —K aty Wilson and Kelsey Brunson, Band Directors Lynn Lathem, Choral Director

Riverside Community Participates in Environmental Conservation By Adriane K. Seymour, Director of Communications The City of Gainesville, GA currently provides an average of 17.1 million gallons of water per day from Lake Lanier to residents of Gainesville and Hall County and their Public Utilities Department has been performing environmental monitoring and public education since 1987. Since the program’s inception, the city has won numerous awards including certification in 2008 as a ‘WaterFirst’ Community. The City of Gainesville Environmental Services Division offers many programs oriented to school-age children. As part of a water conservation initiation, an annual Rain Barrel Decorating contest was held in the spring. Several local middle and high schools, including Riverside, submitted decorated rain barrels to be housed in the Public Utilities Department. The contest theme was focused on keeping our water supply clean. Riverside’s entry was created by art cadets C/SGT Logan Whitmore, C/SGT ShungHei Choi, and C/CPL Blake Young. C/SGT Whitmore’s theme was based on the creation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. RMA is a proud partner of the Hall County Green Alliance and was selected as the first school in Hall County to participate in the Clean Air Schools Program in January. Riverside also continues campus-wide recycling in partnership with the Hall County Recycling Program since 2011.

Riverside’s Grenadiers Launched

The Grenadiers are Riverside’s new rudimental rope drum line. Riverside’s Grenadiers perform historically accurate drum cadences and calls from the Civil War and Revolutionary War on replica Civil War drums that were custom made for RMA over 20 years ago. This past year, our Grenadiers were invited to perform in many community special events throughout Hall County and the State of GA including the Flowery Branch Invitational. The event was sponsored by the Southern Association for Performance Arts, and over 70 units competed from schools and communities throughout Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. Our Grenadiers were the only group invited to perform for this exhibition. Other events they performed at include several local elementary schools, concerts, parades, and the grand opening of the largest Kroger store in the Southeast, located in Gainesville, in which Governor Deal, the Mayor, and other special community dignitaries participated in the ribbon cutting. 19

2nd Annual Founders’ Day Shows Increased Alumni Participation By Amanda K. Griffin, CFRE

The second annual Founders’ Day last April was a success with alumni attendance growing to 61, a 40 percent increase from 2013. Total attendance, including guests, was almost 100. Alumni started the weekend with a reception at Mitchell Quarters hosted by President Jim and Mary Benson. Back by popular demand was the Saturday night BBQ featuring the finest Georgia-style Q prepared by RMA’s own Ryan Honey, ’96. The Founders’ Day program on Saturday morning was expanded to include a historical review of Sandy Beaver and legendary men like Mooney, Horton, Curtis, May, and Maginnis. A Korean War memorial dedication was also held on Memorial Plaza. Coach Errol Bisso, director of alumni relations, was recognized during Saturday’s parade for his retirement after 37 years as wrestling coach. Three new members were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame – Greg Werd, ‘56, Bill Glisson, ’78, and Richard McMahon, ’58. Read more about their achievements on page 27. A portrait of Lucile Beaver was dedicated during Founders’ Day weekend with artist John Melius present for the dedication. This was the third painting by the Washington, D.C. artist, whose RMA works includes portraits of Sandy Beaver and John Beaver. Miss Beaver’s portrait was made possible by Don and Gloria Misner, ’53, and it hangs outside the Lucile Beaver Library, which was dedicated in her honor in May 2013.

The MSG Larry W. Beauchamp Obstacle Course is on schedule (if not a little ahead) to be dedicated Friday, October 24 at 4 p.m. during the 2014 Homecoming festivities. Many alumni, parents of current RMA cadets, and grandparents have joined together to fund this project with money, materials, and time. The official USMC obstacle course has been on Commandant Kevin Jarrard’s wish list for several years. The opportunity to build it in memory of MSG Larry W. Beauchamp, long time RMA staff member, seemed like the perfect way to remember a well-loved mentor, and alumni rallied to the cause. “Thanks to all who have contributed to this project,” said Geoff Hurdle, ’87, chair of the project. “There are still opportunities to help, and there will be more details to come in regards to the memorial plaques and naming rights to the different stations in the course.” Watch Facebook and the RMA website for photos as construction begins in early August!

Irwin Molasky, ‘45: Shaper of Las Vegas’ Skyline To Be Honored Irwin Molasky, a 1945 Riverside graduate, will be honored at Homecoming as the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Considered one of the most prolific real estate developers in the country, the majority of Molasky’s work is in California and Las Vegas, Nevada, his hometown since 1951. His mark can be found in all aspects of design and development from residential to office buildings, malls and shopping centers, commercial, healthcare, aviation, hospitality, multifamily and mixed use. He credits the principles and discipline instilled upon him at Riverside with his success in his long and varied career. In his senior year he was valedictorian and president of the Horton Society. He received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, but instead spent one year at Ohio State before moving to southern California to construct buildings. McLendon Will Share Name with Quadrangle & Endowed Scholarship By Amanda K. Griffin, CFRE

W.L. “Mac” McLendon, ’58, believes that his attendance at Riverside Military Academy served him well in his career and all of life, so he and his wife, Sue, are giving back. During Homecoming festivities on Saturday, October 25, the quadrangle in front of Lanier Hall will be named the McLendon Quadrangle in dedication ceremonies following the Corps of Cadets parade. The McLendons first considered making a gift through their estate plans, but agreed they wanted to see their gift of $100,000 at work in helping young men attend Riverside by providing tuition assistance through an endowed fund. McLendon attended Riverside during 1956 and part of 1957 from his home in Palm Beach, Florida. He finished his junior year at Riverside and graduated from Palm Beach High. However, he states that, “I owe a lot of my success to the structure, discipline, neatness, and grooming to my Riverside years. My time at Riverside served me well in all of my endeavors.” McLendon began his career at 18 as a dispatcher for the Florida Highway Patrol while commuting to Miami Springs to attend classes to further a law enforcement career. He graduated from the Florida Highway Patrol Academy where his “spit and polish” training at Riverside was an asset. At 28 he became police chief and Public Safety Director in St. Cloud, Florida, then Congressional Aide to Congressman Skip Bafalis; and appointed United States Marshal of the Northern District of Florida by President Reagan and then by President George H.W. Bush. He has continued his law enforcement affiliations and is currently Chairman of the Board of Star and Shield Insurance Exchange. McLendon is not alone in his love for Riverside. His wife, Sue, who retired from the Federal Court and the Office of the U.S. Attorney, fell in love with Riverside the first time she attended Homecoming several years ago. Mac and Sue live in Tallahassee, Florida, and along with their support for Riverside; they are active with the Shriners International and many other organizations.

ALLYN AYERS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED By Amanda K. Griffin, CFRE The family of Riverside alumnus Allyn Ayers, ’64, has established an endowed scholarship fund of $50,000 in his memory. The endowment will provide an annual $2,500 scholarship to a cadet whose family qualifies for need-based financial assistance. The family’s intent is for the scholarship to be a confidence-builder for the recipient, and to be a “difference maker” in a young man’s life. Andrea Ayers Layman and Emery Ayers-Greenidge, who visited Riverside in recent years with their father, say that RMA provided him the break he needed. School work did not come easy for him, but he learned the skills at Riverside that he needed to be successful in life. Ice Cold Air, an automotive service center franchise, was founded Ayers family members who joined RMA alumni in Tampa last January by Ayers. A native of Tampa, FL, he opened a shop in Orlando in 1965 to include, from left, Andrea Ayers Layman, Ayers Layman, RMA President calibrate speedometers. His customers began asking for more services, Jim Benson, and Dr. Bill Layman. The family has created an endowed fund and the business known as Ice Cold Air was born. Specialty auto air in memory of Allyn Ayers, ’64. conditioning in Florida was a great concept waiting to happen, and over the next 45 years auto air conditioning came to represent 50% of the company’s total annual revenue, according to the company website. Ayers had a knack for selecting successful franchise owners as the company grew, and he wanted individuals who would provide the family-oriented, friendly, and professional service for which the company was renowned. He was also known to seek out franchise owners whom he recognized as having the necessary people and business skills to succeed, but needed a “lucky break” to get started. Ayers considered Riverside the “lucky break” he needed as a teenager. “It saved me,” he said several years before his death. He did not earn a Riverside diploma, but would have been part of the class of 1964. He considered Riverside his true alma mater. Ayers’ daughters, their mother,Valerie Ayers, and other family members plan to attend Homecoming in October. They look forward to visiting with all alumni, especially members of the class of 1964, who will celebrate their 50th anniversary. 26

FOUNDERS’ DAY AND HOMECOMING

SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS By Errol Bisso, Director of Alumni Relations

The RMA Sports Hall of Fame has grown to 21 members, and two more will be inducted during the Homecoming parade on October 25. Nominations are accepted year-round, and members are inducted twice each year – during Founders’ Day and Homecoming. Three outstanding athletes inducted into the RMA Hall of Fame during Founders’ Day 2014 include: Greg Werd, ’56, was a four-year Riverside cadet, a varsity letterman in football, basketball, and track. In football, he rushed for 100 yards a game his senior year and was the leader in defensive tackles. He was chosen as a member of the All Mid-South Football Team. In addition to his ball carrying skills, he was a bone-crushing blocker, and was Battalion Commander his senior year. He serves as the chairman of the RMA Board of Visitors (BOV). Richard McMahon, ’58, was a three-year cadet at RMA and was a four-sport letterman in cross country, basketball, gymnastics, and track in ’55-’56. He accumulated 10 varsity letters in three years, one of the highest in Riverside history. During senior year, he lost only one cross country race, and he broke his own RMA course record almost every time he competed while serving as team captain. William Glisson, ’78, was a five-year cadet who lettered in varsity football, track, and golf for four years, garnering most improved and most valuable performer in each sport junior and senior years. In football he was the team’s leading rusher for his last three years, and in track he’s still the co-holder of the 100 meter dash record with a time of 10.7, one of the oldest records on the RMA books. It has been tied but has remained unbroken for 35 years. He is an active member of the Riverside Alumni Council. A former state-placing wrestler and a long-time RMA coach have been selected for induction during Homecoming 2014: Andy Zager, ’88, arrived at RMA in 1984 and began his athletic career on the football team. As a sophomore, he and his teammates were the first Riverside wrestlers to become members of REVEILLE I SUMMER 2014

the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Zager and fellow team members became the first GHSA area champions to qualify for RMA’s first trip to the “AAA” State Championships. Junior year he played football and became an area wrestling champion at 185 lbs. He qualified for the GHSA “AAA” State Meet and was the first Riverside wrestler to place in the Georgia State Wrestling Championships as well as our first athlete to place in any GHSA state championship. He is a member of the Riverside BOV. Richard (Dick) Nichols, ’12 (Honorary), joined RMA as a teacher and head basketball coach during the 1962-63 school year. He served as head basketball coach until 1976 and accrued over 100 wins. The most memorable was the triple overtime home win against Chaminade High School, which was the number one rated team in Florida. He served as athletic director for the next 24 years and was instrumental in hiring coaches to grow RMA’s athletic program. During the 1980-81 school year, all RMA teams had winning records, the only time thus far in Riverside history. His RMA career totaled 37 years. He is also remembered by alumni as an outstanding coach and history teacher. Nichols serves on the RMA Board of Trustees. 27

Alumnus Abe Mitchell to Receive Philanthropy Award Abe Mitchell, ’55, of Mobile, AL, and his late brother, Mayer Mitchell, an RMA graduate of 1949, have been recognized for the family’s generosity by the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and by the University of South Alabama.

“ It has been an honor to get to know Mr. Mitchell and see how in a quiet and unpretentious way he gives and gives in order to make life better for so many.” — RMA President Jim Benson

Riverside, in turn, will honor its alumnus during October’s Homecoming weekend. “It is an honor to announce that the President’s Philanthropy Award will be presented to Abe Mitchell at Homecoming this year,” said RMA President Jim Benson. “It has been an honor to get to know Mr. Mitchell and see how in a quiet and unpretentious way he gives and gives in order to make life better for so many.” The Mitchell family’s history of giving to a variety of organizations in south Alabama is well known, particularly at the University of South Alabama, where the family’s total giving is $93 million. Riverside has also been the recipient of Abe Mitchell’s philanthropy, most notably in the 2012-13 school year when he challenged alumni, parents, and friends to match $500,000 to build a president’s home on campus. The home was dedicated in May 2013 as the Mitchell Quarters. Mitchell believed strongly that Riverside’s president should reside on campus for security reasons as well as the ability to host several annual events at the home. The RMA Board of Trustees moved forward with the building plan, which was endorsed by Mitchell’s challenge to the Riverside family to meet his match and have the house built debt-free. In the year following the Quarters’ dedication, the gracious southern-style home has been the site of numerous receptions, parties, picnics, and dinners for parents, cadets, alumni, trustees, and community friends. Many of the rooms in the Quarters bear the names of trustees and other donors who made significant gifts to help meet Mitchell’s challenge. “Here at Riverside we are grateful for Abe’s friendship and honored to have him as one of our Distinguished Alumni (2012),” said President Benson.

The Sandy Beaver Entrepreneurial Leadership Award Program Established Due to the leadership of several Riverside alumni, the Sandy Beaver Entrepreneurial Leadership Award Program has been created. The program’s goal is to create a foundation to provide tuition assistance for worthy young men whose families have a demonstrated financial need. The founders envision, in time, a $1 million foundation to assist Riverside in perpetuating its military-style education. The program and award are named for Sandy Beaver, Riverside’s president for over 50 years. His vision, passion, and determination to mold boys into men continues today and will endure for years to come. The award, named in his honor, will be given annually to a recipient who emulates his legendary qualities. Walter E. Smith, Jr., ’58, and a small group of donors have funded the program with almost $100,000. The program will continue to be funded by tax-deductible gifts and proceeds from the annual Sandy Beaver Entrepreneurial Leadership Award dinner. The first annual dinner will occur Thursday, August 14 and will honor two Gainesville businessmen – Frank K. Norton, Sr. and Joe S. Hatfield (posthumous). They were selected from among nominees by a committee of community leaders.

Recipients of the award will be men and women who have demonstrated entrepreneurial leadership and success in the areas of government, education, military, medicine, or business to a degree rarely observed. Additionally, these individuals will exhibit personal values and character that are consistent with the words and deeds of General Sandy Beaver during his 50 years as a dedicated servant leader in Gainesville and at Riverside Military Academy. For more information please call Amanda K. Griffin, vice president for advancement, 770-538-2924. Thank you to these founding members of the Sandy Beaver Entrepreneurial Leadership Program:

ANNUAL GIVING REPORT 2013-2014

RIVERSIDE MILITARY ACADEMY

2013-2014 ANNUAL GIVING The RMA Board of Trustees and administration are pleased to present the following giving report from the fiscal year 2013-2014 (June 1 – May 31). To all of you whose names appear on the following pages, we say “Thank you!” Your participation at any level is meaningful and appreciated. Total giving for 2013-2014 was $1,241,217, which surpassed the budgeted goal for giving, but fell below the previous year’s giving record of just over $2 million when the Mitchell Quarters was constructed. Giving begets giving, and following the example of Abe Mitchell, ’52, whose matching challenge of $500,000 made the Mitchell Quarters’ possible, other donors have stepped forward. The Carlos and Sandra Cervantes Theatre was dedicated at Homecoming last year and a fund established to advance the fine arts programs, including provision for merit scholarships. Highlights from the 2013-2014 fiscal year include: •T he number of active alumni continues to grow. The current number is 5,326, almost a 10 percent increase in a year. (Active alumni are defined as those for whom we have current contact information.) • Faculty and staff giving grew by almost seven percent as more signed up for the Georgia GOAL tax credit program that provides tuition assistance to new RMA students enrolling from a Georgia public school. • A donor wall was installed in the foyer of Lanier Hall and includes over 115 names of donors who have given cumulatively $10,000 or more since 2002.

ANNUAL GIVING REPORT 2013-2014

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of the Academy, Five years ago this summer I moved to Gainesville, Georgia, to work at Riverside Military Academy. Honestly, I had no idea what I was getting into, but I knew I had the skills for the job, and I knew I was going to be working for and with professional people committed to the mission of sustaining, improving, and filling every bed at Riverside. At a glance, I see how much we, and that includes you, have accomplished. We have raised almost $6 million since the 09-10 school year. We have named almost 20 buildings, rooms, sports fields, the theatre, and the library for donors as well as RMA legends. Enrollment has grown consecutively every semester, and we are on the verge of blowing the top off of capacity.

Be mindful of time zones – just because it’s 10 a.m. in Gainesville doesn’t mean people in California want to hear from me. I’ve learned that Marines don’t use umbrellas, they move fast, and they don’t sit around and talk about doing stuff – they just go do it.

There’s a lot going on at Riverside beginning now. Walter Smith, ’58, has recruited alumni and friends to help create the Sandy Beaver Entrepreneurial Leadership Program to raise funds for tuition assistance. Read about this program and what it will mean to Riverside on page 28. Homecoming is around the corner October 24-25. The Larry W. Beauchamp Obstacle Course will be dedicated, Casino Night and the auction are on the schedule, and Distinguished Alumni will be honored. Read about Homecoming activities on page 22, and be sure to register using the form on page 24. Take a moment to scan through the list of donors on the following pages. Sixteen new names were added to the cumulative giving levels, the number of total donors last year increased by seven percent, and parent giving increased six percent. Thank you to each of you who are named.Your participation means more to us than you’ll ever know. Here’s to the next five years! To paraphrase Dr. Seuss, who knows the places we’ll go?

REVEILLE I SUMMER 2014

Dear Brothers, Parents, and Friends: Just as this issue of Reveille includes an annual report of all giving, it is an opportune time to share with you the accomplishments of your Alumni Association since 2011. The Association’s mission and purpose is to support the furtherance, longevity, and military model preparatory school education of RMA. Through the guidance of the Alumni Council, the Association works to: expand participation of alumni; assist the President in sustaining and growing annual financial support of the Academy through alumni and alumni-related donations; plan and execute social and fundraising events; and assist with cadet recruiting, retention, and development. Since fall 2011, the Association has accomplished the following milestones. The complete report may be read online under the “Alumni” tab at www.riversidemilitary.com. 1. The total number of active alumni in our database has grown from 3,682 to 5,326 or a 45% increase in participating alumni (those with whom we can communicate via mail, email, or phone). 2. The Association began Founders’ Day weekend in April 2013. 3. The Alumni Council was reorganized and has a strong membership of 16 members and six emeritus. The Council meets twice each year, Homecoming and Founders’ Day, and adopted new bylaws in 2013.

“ ...we believe emphatically in our hearts that Riverside molded us into the men we are today.” — Bud Oakey, ’75

4. S ince 2011 alumni have recognized RMA legends Col. Engle C. May and Maj. Gerald “Goomba” Wilson through focused fundraising efforts. MSG Larry W. Beauchamp will be honored with the construction of an obstacle course to be dedicated in October. 5. At least five alumni reunions are scheduled annually in the U. S. and abroad with the last event held during June in Cozumel, Mexico. 6. An Alumni Association Chairman’s Coin has been created and used to promote the ethical values of a Riverside education. The coin is awarded to alumni who donate to Riverside $250 or more, to a person who has contributed to the betterment of the Academy, to graduating cadets, and in some cases, to families of deceased alumni. 7. A new alumni directory, the first since 2007, was published spring 2014 by Harris Connect. 8. F inally, and maybe, the most important – tuition assistance (scholarship). In 2011, 31 alumni contributed $75,775. In the last two years combined, that number has risen to 60 alumni who have given $371,126 toward tuition assistance. Alumni from all classes have told me, and I agree with you, that we believe emphatically in our hearts that Riverside molded us into the men we are today. I hope to see you all in October. Best to you,

Bud Oakey, ’75 Chairman RMA Alumni Council

Tyler Carter appreciates Riverside Roots By Julie A. Smith, Multimedia Manager

We recently caught up with Tyler Carter, an RMA Class of 2010 alumnus, who is a singer/songwriter and frontman of rock band Issues.

JS – Tyler, do you remember your future goals (touring, making albums, building a legacy) as an RMA senior in the 2010 Bayonet yearbook? They stood out to me because you already seem to be achieving them. I think it’s rare to know what you want to do at a young age and turn it into a career. What are the highlights of your music career so far? TC – Wow, I forgot that I even wrote that. It's kinda funny that my goals were such things and I actually followed through and fought for the dreams I had set. You're absolutely right. How can you really know back then what you want to do? Very seldom do teens really follow through. Most change their minds three or four times after high school. My music career has been a sweet journey. I've written with all kinds of amazing producers, I've toured with my band all over Europe and America, and soon to hit other major countries. But the highlight of my career, happens over and over again, when I'm on stage each and every night of tour, and I look into a crowd, and thousands of kids, who don't personally even know me, are screaming my songs at the top of their lungs right back to me. That feeling no one could ever fathom – to know that I've impacted so many lives in a positive way. To have fans come up to me and tell me how some of my lyrics have changed their lives or gotten them through the darkest hours of their lives, it's unbelievable. JS – You said that your career began when you signed that first record deal and boarded a plane the day you graduated from Riverside. Has Riverside played a role in your success? TC – Without a doubt Riverside has played a huge role in my success. I don't think I ever understood the characteristics of a man until I was molded by the fundamentals of RMA. Sure there were ups and downs when I attended my earlier years, and I wasn't always the brightest or most disciplined pupil, but I did learn over the years that if you don't try, or you don't find the good in something, you will always hate it. RMA had so much to offer me, but it took me a while to get past my own frustrations. This wasn't punishment, this was enlightenment. I learned how to stand up straight, be a leader, and take control of my own destiny. "Nothingcan save you from the fate that awaits you gentlemen, you have to take your life into your own hands..." Haha! I was sometimes a selective listener during Kevin Jarrard's speeches, but he and all the other spirits of Riverside had a hand in creating the man I have become today.

JS – Do you enjoy performing a variety of musical styles, or do you prefer one type over another? TC – Oh goodness, if I had to stick with one style of music forever I would just quit. I'm far too musically diverse for that, I enjoy writing all types of music. Stylistically though as an artist (separate from my writing career) I have to be a little more dedicated to a specific genre. I'm from Georgia though, so country music and R&B have a huge place in my heart. But overall I'm a rock guy. JS – What do you hope the Tyler Carter legacy will be some day? TC – I think I've pretty much answered that in these questions, but in addition to being remembered for my impact, I would love to eventually be involved with more than just music. I want people to just remember me as a hard working person, someone who did it all. Someone of compassion, and someone of character. I want to help kids, I want to give back to the brokenness that has inspired me and kept me on the right track. Doing it for the right reasons, if you can understand. JS – What are some upcoming projects we can expect from you? TC – I'm not sure. I'm too spontaneous these days to tell. I would love to come play acoustically for the Boys in Blue and share a little bit of my story one day though! At the time of printing,Tyler was touring Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
