ot even the stifling, near-record heat could temper the mounting enthusiasm in Ardsley on Wednesday, June 20. With the mercu ry approaching triple digits even at 6 p.m., proud family members and friends — complimentary water bottles in hand — packed the bleachers and chairs set up on the football field to celebrate the high school’s 96th commencement. The graduation ceremony featured some funny, several poignant, and more than a few festive moments. The event formally began with the traditional playing of “Pomp and Circumstance” by the school’s band and orchestra as the 190 graduating seniors marched out from the school and took their seats on the field. After the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Student Council co-presidents Madison Dinaso and Hannah Siegel, and the singing of the national anthem, Rachel Ahn, senior class president, and Aimee Tandoi, class vice president, greeted the crowd with an opening address. Together, they listed some of their grade’s accomplishments, including the Academic Challenge team’s victory on the MSG Varsity television quiz show “The Challenge,” which netted the school $10,000. “Thirteen years ago we began an educational journey that would lead us to this day,” Ahn said. “The Class of 2012 knows what it wants and will be steadfast in achieving its goals.” Next, Kimberly Goldstein gave the salutatory address, focusing primarily on the theme of growing up while staying connected to people and experiences from days gone by. She invoked the animated film “Toy Story” as an example of that concept, because in that movie — or series of three movies, to be exact — a boy continues to love and cherish his toys even as he moves toward adulthood. “Sometimes the best way to get ready for an intimidating challenge — say, college — is to reconnect with comforts of the past,” she said. Goldstein went on to talk about the connections and friendships her classmates have formed through the years. She asked her peers to go out and create new adventures but to make sure they remember and stay connected to the people, places, and events that helped make them who they are. “Endings must exist to create new beginnings,” she said. “Separation is not isolation. The binds we have formed are elastic, allowing them to stretch over time and distance.” The valedictory speech was delivered by Bettina Cheung, who recited a poem about looking to the future with optimism. Cheung acknowledged that her classmates will encounter people who want to portray the world as a miserable place, but that they should not give in to such cynicism. “It’s not where you look, but how you look,” she said. “Find happiness even if you have to squint to find it.”

Schools Superintendent Lauren Allan was next to the podium, offering congratulations and encouraging the seniors to push themselves to forge meaningful relationships. She also counseled the graduates to pursue their interests vigorously. “Find what you love. Find what you are passionate about and simply go get it,” she said. “And never be afraid to fail.” In closing, Allan told the students that Ardsley would always be their home, and that they’d always be welcomed back with open arms and doors. The superintendent said she hoped the community had provided the graduates “wings to fly and take risks, and roots that hold and ground you.” Allan also quoted Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young,” joking that she wasn’t sure all the students were familiar with the illustrious songwriter identified with the social issues and self-expression of the pre-iPod era. “May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true. May you always do for others, and let others do for you,” Allan said, reciting the song’s lyrics. “May you build a ladder to the stars, and climb on every rung. May you stay forever young.” School board president Patricia Bova spoke next, praising the Class of 2012 for its accomplishments and wishing it luck moving forward. She asked the students to embrace whatever experiences come their way. “The future is uncertain,” she said. “That’s what makes it so exciting.” Fittingly, AHS Principal Jim Haubner made the closing remarks. Before addressing the senior class, he thanked the faculty and staff from Concord Road Elementary, Ardsley Middle School, and the high school for helping to shape the seniors’ young lives. He also acknowledged four retirees in the district, including his vice principal, Mary Gorman. In his speech, Haubner described the many changes that have occurred both in education and the larger world over the years the seniors spent in the Ardsley school system. He talked about the increased use of technology, adjustments in state testing, and a host of other introductions and modifications, expressing his admiration for the students’ adaptability. The principal also praised the class of 2012 for its geniality, saying this year’s annual senior cruise — which took students on a boat ride past the Statue of Liberty on June 7 — was the most inclusive he had ever seen. He went on to encourage students to make good decisions and stay true to themselves. “Don’t ever lose your enthusiasm, or your ability to live in the moment,” he advised. After recalling some of his fondest memories from the past four years, Haubner concluded with some simple advice: “Always, always, wherever you go, remember to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’” With that, Haubner made his formal presentation of the graduates to Bova. The students began filing out of their seats to receive their diplomas, and the crowd cheered as the Class of 2012 moved toward the podium, into the next phase of their lives. 

‘Best class ever’ sets off on ‘paths to greatness’

w

BY SaRaH King

ith stunningly beautiful weather, 109 students completed their schooling at Dobbs Ferry High School in a graduation ceremony held next to the sparkling Hudson, at the village’s Waterfront Park on June 16. The Class of 2012, which DFHS Assistant Principal Sandra Intrieri asserted in her speech is the “best class to ever graduate from Dobbs Ferry,” shared its excitement with an audience of friends, teachers, and many tearful relatives. Included in the program was a rendition of the “StarSpangled Banner,” arranged by Springhurst Elementary School music teacher George Swietlicki and performed by former members of the elementary school choral group, the Harmonaires. This was the ensemble of 17 seniors’ first performance together since the fifth grade. The reassembling of the Harmonaires was just one example of the grade’s strong bond, which Marty Ascher, copresident of the legislative branch of student government, and Krishna Pandya, co-president of the activities branch, spoke of in their welcome speech. “For most of us, 18 years in this town have passed by and for at least 13 of those years, we have been with one another. You’d think that we would have become sick of each other by now, but in the days preceding graduation, I think we can speak for everyone when we say that the Class of 2012 has become closer than ever,” said Ascher. This graduation marked the first in the district for both DFHS Principal John Falino and Schools Superintendent Lisa Brady. In his speech, Falino encouraged the graduates to face the challenges of the “real world” with the same enthusiasm they have demonstrated in the classroom. Quoting the late President John F. Kennedy, he said, “The torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans.” The graduating

class, said Falino, is part of that generation. Following this was a speech by Class of 2012 adviser Maria Addona, who reminisced on the various events and activities that the grade had partaken in over the years, such

as the eighth-grade class trip to Washington, D.C., and raising chicks in the first-grade classrooms. Salutatorian Regina Chan, who came to Dobbs Ferry in middle school after having spent most of her young life in China, talked about many of the observations she had in her years in the village, in particular the diversity of the community. Chan finished her speech with the message that, because perfect happiness cannot always be attained, the pursuit of satisfaction is a more realistic approach to life. “Satisfaction is to have enough,” she said. “Satisfaction is to be comfortable with what you have. Satisfaction is to eat a delicious cafeteria muffin in one gigantic bite and feel full, but not painfully so.” Martha Corey-Ochoa, the valedictorian, spoke of the important role that love plays in many aspects of the world by examining it through the lenses of mathematics, history, physics, literature, and her own personal experiences. Referencing her mathematical knowledge, she advised the audience that “only when we defy our selfish tendencies by helping and caring for others, for instance by kind words, smiles, or volunteer work, will we reach the asymptote of our own happiness.” Preceding the conclusion of the ceremony was a moving performance of Pachelbel’s Canon by the senior string quartet, comprised of Rebecca Lowy on cello, Will Klassen on viola, and Sofia Maluf and Sarah King on violin. The commencement was then completed with the presentation of diplomas. The DFHS Class of 2012 includes students who will be attending some of the top colleges in the country; others entering the workforce; and a few taking a gap year to pursue other endeavors before continuing their schooling. “As you well know,” said Falino to the graduates as he offered encouragement and advice for the future, “graduation is not the end of something great but rather the very beginning of your paths to greatness.” 

hile most of the Hastings High School seniors, as well as their families and friends, may have thought of the ceremony at Reynolds Field on Thursday, June 21, as a “graduation,” programs that were distributed referred to it as the school’s 104th “commencement.” Though the two words are often used interchangeably, they also imply different meanings, as “graduation” refers to an ending, and “commencement” a beginning. Not surprisingly, most of the day’s speakers looked back at the recent past, while also welcoming a new phase of life. After the Class of 2012 marched across the field in 94-degree heat to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance,” and the officers of the class presented the school’s banner to members of the Class of 2013, Principal Louis Adipietro welcomed those assembled and introduced each speaker. First up was senior class president Andrew Wolfson, who took up the theme of looking back while moving forward by telling his classmates to seize the moment. “It seems this is the end of an era, but in reality we wake up and take a look around us,” he said. “We see the faces we’ve known for so long, and for some reason, this one moment seems so special. It’s because today is our day. Today, we have succeeded… This is the time in our lives when we do the things we need to do to be the people we need to be… There are certain opportunities that only come once in your lifetime. So when they give you a microphone, you better make a speech. And when you take your first steps into the future — kid, you better leap.” Following Wolfson to the podium was commencement speaker Zack O’Malley Greenburg. Greenburg, a graduate of Hastings High’s Class of 2003, is a staff writer for Forbes magazine and the author of the JayZ biography “Empire State of Mind: How Jay-Z Went From Street Corner to Corner Office.” At Forbes he covers music and finance, and has profiled artists and moguls ranging from 50 Cent to Justin Beiber. He has also written for The Washington Post, McSweeney’s, Sports Illustrated and other publications. Although he had a successful career as a child actor — starring in the title role of the 1992 film “Lorenzo’s Oil” opposite Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon — Greenburg remembered “being scared out of my mind” at his own graduation from Hastings. He had moved to Hastings in 1999 to live with his father, the noted author Dan Greenburg, during high school. (The elder Greenburg named his best-selling children’s book series The Zack Files for his son). When he arrived in Hastings, he had been nervous about being “the new kid” and while he quickly adapted, graduation day found him warily anticipating a similar transition to college. Looking back at his time in Hastings, he fondly remembered

“Mr. Conwiser’s Africa plate lesson” and the cross-country road trip with teacher Daniel Brownstein and fellow students in “the first-ever geology trip.” Greenburg also credited his time there with launching his interest in hip-hop, especially since that musical era was marked by the rise of Yonkers-based rappers like DMX, Styles P, Swizz Beatz, and Jadakiss. Greenburg became ZOG when he and his friends adopted hip-hop-styled nicknames and began referring to Hastings as North North Yonkers. As for his eventual career writing about the music he loves, he credited the experience he gained writing for The Buzzer, the HHS school paper, and to Ge-

rard Marciano, Ross Abrams, and his other English teachers for helping him become the writer he is today. Greenburg also noted that his experience learning to fit in when he arrived in Hastings taught him that he could do the same when talking to rappers, and that he fit in while living here in large part because the community is welcoming. “Hastings has a long history of accepting outsiders,” he said. “There are 44 former Confederate soldiers buried in Mount Hope Cemetery,” he noted, explaining how the former rebels moved north to escape the turmoil and poverty of the postwar South. Greenburg also pointed out that the children of convicted spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg lived in Hastings after their parents were executed, and they too graduated from Hastings High. Greenburg left the graduates with a few practical pieces of advice — from paying off the balance on monthly credit cards to responsible drinking habits (“Tequila shots are never a good idea”). Quoting his father, he said, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Quoting his mother, writer Suzanne O’Malley, he said, “Success isn’t about being in the right place at the right time, it’s about putting yourself in the right place so you’ll be there when the right time comes along.” Following Greenburg were salutatorian Sarah Madigan and valedictorian Alexandra Berman. Madigan recalled asking as many friends as possible what she should say to capture the spirit of her class’s experience. “There were those who said look behind, and those who said look to the future,” she recalled, echoing the day’s theme. One friend, as well as her brother, recommended referring to some of the many

newsworthy events that occurred over the past four years. Madigan complied by listing subjects from President Obama to Lady Gaga, as well as the Twilight books and movies, the landing of the airliner in the Hudson, another Yankees world championship, the earthquake in Haiti, the Arab Spring, pop stars Ke$ha and Adele, and the Occupy Wall Street movement. Berman too looked back before looking to the future. “It may be a cliché to say you only truly appreciate something once it’s gone,” she said “but this year has shown me there’s a little bit of truth in all clichés. My time as a senior, knowing I’d be leaving Hastings in the fall, has reminded me what a great place this is to grow up and to learn in… Growing up in Hastings means that we always had teachers, families and friends helping us to succeed. They stood behind us to catch us when we fell and they made our time here special.” Looking forward, Berman said, “Senior year has taught me the you can’t wait — because nothing will get done if you wait. Nothing will ever get done unless you make it happen. It was up to us to make our senior year amazing, and now that we have. It’s up to us to make college and our careers even better. Our future is completely in our hands, because that’s what starting over means. It means that we have the power to make the next few years as individuals whatever we want them to be. We can leave and wait for our dreams to unfold, or we can go off and make them happen.” After some brief remarks by the Board of Education President Eileen Baecher and Timothy Conners, the interim superintendant, the ceremony concluded with the presentation of diplomas, after which the new graduates headed into their futures. 

he fact that Irvington High School Principal Scott Mosenthal needed to yell “Don’t throw them yet!” — to stop students from prematurely tossing their caps at the end of graduation — says more about the Class of 2012 than any speech could. This was an excited bunch. “I would like to thank them for their enthusiasm and decency as young people,” Mosenthal said during commencement at Irvington’s Matthiessen Park on the village waterfront. “They have managed to channel their lively spirit.” He described how the students used that energy to organize the high school’s own celebration modeled after the Dayglow paint party, as well as become the class with the largest percentage of students to complete community service hours in the 11 years that Mosenthal has served as principal. He also had a tip for how they can stay involved in the future. “My advice for you is simple: You need to be aware,” said Mosenthal. “It means noticing the seemingly small things.” And he encouraged the students to take action when they become aware of something like a college classmate who doesn’t have many friends, or a classmate being bullied verbally. Schools Superintendent Robert Roelle also helped open the ceremony with a speech on the theme “You too can make a difference.” He started by acknowledging the impact that the seniors have already made during their young lives. “You have brought honor and recognition to your families, your high school, and your community,” said Roelle. To show how simple making a difference can be, Roelle told the story of a boy who walked along a shore during a hot day, one by one throwing starfish back in the water so they wouldn’t overheat and die. When an older man told him there were too many starfish on the shore for him to make a difference, the boy just continued on. “You should never fail to recognize the value of what may seem to be an insignificant contribution,” said Roelle. School board president John Dawson followed by choosing to highlight three words — “extraordinary,” “change,” and “opportunity” — for their importance. Dawson congratulated the seniors for their extraordinary accomplishments in high school, encouraged them to be prepared for and not be afraid of change, and to take advantage of new opportunities that will come from change. Then it was time for a few members of the senior class to share their last words as IHS students. Class president Nicole Chernick, who will be attending Penn State University, took the opportunity to remind her classmates how fortunate they were to be minutes away from realizing their accomplishment. “Not every kid has the opportunity to be where we are today,” said Chernick.

The graduates fill the sky with their mortarboards.

Tyekwon Livingston walks up to accept his diploma.

Like Mosenthal, Chernick recognized her class of seniors as an energetic group of students that could often be a handful. “Kudos for being able to put up with us for four years,” Chernick said to the high school teachers. She extended that message to the parents who have dealt with the students for several years more than the teachers. Chernick ended with a message quoted from likely the most prominent figure in her future school’s history, former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno.

JIM MACLEAN/RIVERTOWNS ENTERPRISE

“Believe in your heart that you’re destined to do great things,” she said. Salutatorian Julia Channing used her speech to advise her classmates to never forget the simple goal of being happy, despite how complex their future may become. She talked of how Steve Jobs, the late CEO of Apple, once attended college calligraphy courses, not because he needed the knowledge for any practical reasons, but because he was happy to learn about it. His knowledge of calligraphy wound up helping him

create the unique design of Apple products. Channing drew laughs from the crowd with a story of how a teacher thought she’d misunderstood an assignment when she responded to the question of what she wants to be when she grows up by writing the word “happy.” “Sometimes we worry too much about the future and take ourselves too seriously,” said Channing. “If we find something that makes us happy, chances are we’ll be successful.” Valedictorian Melissa Kuriloff explained how she’s seen the idea of sharing evolve in her and her classmates’ lifetimes from distributing crayons in elementary school to sharing pictures, videos, and more online using social media sites. For the older generations in the crowd, she even broke down how to use the “share” button on Facebook. Kuriloff cited the quick explosion in popularity of a video promoting social justice, titled “Kony 2012,” to show how sharing allows people to speak up about a cause they support. “Don’t be afraid to use your voice,” said Kuriloff. “Your voice and your action will make an impact. What will your impact be in the next chapter of your lives?” At last came the moment that the 142 seniors could barely wait for. Each student walked to the podium to receive a diploma and as soon as the last name was called, some students were already motioning to throw their caps in the air. Mosenthal was able to quell them and let the last few people pick up their diplomas to join the rest. Then, altogether, the IHS Class of 2012 moved their tassels to the side and tossed their caps up on cue, ready to take all that energy with them into the future. 
