HISTORY Courtesy of the Marsh Historical Collection
With advancements in transportation and communication, the town became wellconnected to nearby communities and the rest of the world. Several industries thrived here, largely due to the town’s proximity to an important waterway and the international border. Rumrunners took advantage of this convenience during prohibition. Americans came by automobile to spend summers in cottages built along the waterfront south of town.
A MHE RSTBU RG
Amherstburg began as a garrison town. The British established a military post on the Detroit River across from Bois Blanc Island in 1796. A town was laid out south of the fort to service the garrison and quickly grew, becoming a major port. The fort at Amherstburg played an important role in the War of 1812, and the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837-1840. By 1859, Fort Malden ceased to exist as a military post.
Today, Amherstburg includes the former townships of Anderdon to the north and Malden to the south. Anderdon Township was formerly the Huron Reserve, originally inhabited by the Wyandot. Amherstburg was a terminus of the Underground Railroad, and became home to many Freedom Seekers escaping slavery in the United States. Several waves of immigration have contributed to and shaped the Amherstburg community over time. The town’s rich history is preserved in the historic sites, buildings, museums and archives that exist in Amherstburg today.

HISTORY
• In 1742, European settlers came Bois Blanc Blockhouse and Lighthouse to the island. • Sitting at the mouth of the Detroit River, the island became crucial in the navigation of large ships passing through the Detroit River. • Bois Blanc played an important role in the Underground Railroad, becoming a rest stop for many people who came to Canada. • The Bois Blanc Lighthouse was built in 1863 and is one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes. It has been designated a heritage lighthouse by Parks Canada and is a national historic site because it was part of a brief occupation during the Rebellion of 1837 - 1838.
BOIS BL AN C / BOBLO I SL AN D
• The earliest known reference to settlers on Bois Blanc was in 1718 mentioning 70 First Nations families who lived on the island, farming the fertile land.
• The Bois Blanc Blockhouse, built in 1839 as part of the Fort Malden defenses, has also been designated as a national historic site. • The Boblo Island Amusement Park opened in 1898 and closed in 1993.
