ack in the late 1980s and early 90s, many considered downtown Jersey City a tough and gritty place for off-the-grid artists and bluecollar workers. It was during that time Grace Church Van Vorst, an Episcopalian parish in downtown Jersey City opened its big red doors on Erie Street, and welcomed local residents, many of them artists, to participate in the Cathedral Arts Festival. On Sat, April 18, Grace Church’s big red doors will open once again, this time for the 25th anniversary of the Cathedral Arts Festival beckoning local residents and friends to once again enjoy a gala of art, entertainment, food and drink. Under the leadership of Reverend Laurie Jean Wurm and congregants Bayla Kallstrom as chairwoman, Amy Elise as head art curator and other dedicated artists and residents, the Cathedral Arts Festival will once again bridge art and community in this neighborhood parish. cont’d pg. 3

IN ON THE JOKE Stand-Up Comic Brett Druck Hones his Laughs Being Funny is Serious Business By Sally Deering It’s been said that doing stand-up stands out as one of the toughest show biz paths to take, a lonely venture of telling jokes to a boozy crowd with the intention of getting them to laugh at your hilarious observations. Even Jerry Seinfeld started that way. The difficult life of a stand-up comic hasn’t deterred Jersey City’s Brett Druck, a funny man who has taken his observational humor to comedy clubs in New York and New Jersey, Sirius XM Radio and TV. He plays comedy festivals and just began performing at colleges – his first will be Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, and he’s working on his first

comedy album. Druck’s jokes go something like this: “I made out with a ‘ cougar’. But then in the middle of it
she stopped. She said, ‘I can’t do this, I have kids.’ I was like, ‘It’s okay; I have parents’.” Here’s another:

ART & GRACE 25th Cathedral Arts Festival to be held Apr. 18th in Downtown Jersey City Grace Church Van Vorst celebrates Art Cont’d from Cover “The artist community has a long relationship with Grace Church Van Vorst, a lot of parishioners are artists, one gentleman has his own reggae band,” Rev. Wurm says. “Art is essential
to how Grace Church is known in downtown Jersey City. That’s one thing Grace has always embraced.” The April 18th gala will feature refreshments from area restaurants, an open champagne bar,
music, dancing, a silent auction and a special performance by members of Nimbus Dance Works of Jersey City. Sixty-five artists will be exhibiting and selling their works with a percentage of each sale going to Grace Church’s special programs like the Grace Senior Center for Healthy Living, and Grace’s Breakfast Plus program which provides weekend meals to hungry and homeless people in Jersey City. “Art is vital to the life of the church,” Reverend Wurm says. “It can be beautiful and unifying. One of the things I love is when the paintings are hung up in the church. For me it’s a way to see what’s going on around the world. Bringing struggles, triumphs and joys that come with paintings and objects of art, and putting them in a sacred setting allows us to see the world in a sacred way.” COMMUNITY & ART Chairwoman of the curating committee, Amy Elise, has been a Grace Church congregant
since 2008 right after she moved to Jersey City. “The first time I walked through the doors, I saw art on the walls,” Elise says. “The sanctuary was an incredible space and the service was beautiful. There’s this creative energy in the church that immediately embraced me. I wanted to be involved.” Artists from Jersey City and other towns like Newark, Morristown and New York City will be exhibiting their works chosen by Elise and four area curators – Farah Nuradeen (Greenville); Meghan McKee (the Heights); Andrea Artemis Morin (downtown); and Joe Velez (Union City). They picked artists whose work reflects the vibrancy and diversity of Jersey City. “Jersey City is gentrifying, especially downtown, and that has to be represented because that’s part of our reality,” Elise says. “We also wanted the gritty aspects of Jersey City to be represented in the art. The neighborhood that Grace
used to have a different feel. We wanted to respect the artists who are in the downtown neighborhood now and the artists and arts that would have been in the neighborhood 25 years ago.” Artists exhibiting at the 25th Cathedral Arts Festival are Beth Achenbach, Seth Alexander, Paul Andress, Ray Arcadio, Howard Berelson, Miguel Cardenas, Thomas John Carlson, Miroslaw Chelchowski, Jerome China, stephen cimini, Lisa Collodoro, Liz Defrain, Peter Delman, Martin Ramone Delossantos, Dave Dziemian, Dylan Egon, Thomas Egan, Ben Faresich, Eileen Ferara, Mark Finne, Julia Forrest, Geraldine Anderson Gaines, David Gazzo, Jamaila Hernandez, Miguel Hernández, Kayt Hester, Ann Hjelle, Lina Hsiao, Christine Johanns, Norman Kirby, Kortez, Lex Leonard, Béatrice Lebreton, Tatiana Lopez, Beatrice Mady, Julie McHargue, Meghan McKee, Andrea McKenna, Cont’d on page 11

Cont’d from page 2 I’ve heard the way they speak. Fifty years from now you’ll hear some girl like ‘OMG srsly. I can’t even, bye.’ And you’ll be like, that was a terrible State of the Union Address.” Dreck holds a BA in Communications from William Paterson University in Wayne and performed his first paying gig at Just for Laughs in Chicago. Since then, he’s been a finalist in The Andy Kaufman Awards, and in 2012, Dreck was featured on NBCs AMERICA’S GOT TALENT. He’s played the Jersey City and Hoboken Comedy Festivals and New York Stand-Up 360; and he tweets jokes and performance dates to his 19,000 followers on Twitter.
RVO: Are you originally from New Jersey? BD: I grew up in South Orange, in the suburbs. I’m the youngest of three; I have an older brother and sister. My parents experimented with the first two – ‘He’s not going to do anything crazy,’ – and figured I’d be alright. Their biggest fear was that I’d eat a bunch of candy. RVO: What do you think the state of comedy is these days? BD: Comedy fluctuates. The root of it was the Catskills comedians. That will never change: set up, punchline, set up, punchline. RVO: Who are the comics that you enjoy watching; who inspires you?
Brett Druck BD: I love watching Jim Gaffigan ‘cause he’s punch, punch, punch. RVO: Do you remember the first time you made someone laugh? BD: It’s a very vivid memory. I was at Friendly’s with my family, I said something weird and my whole family was laughing, one of those good laughs. RVO: Do you enjoy standing up on a stage alone telling jokes? BD: It’s the best feeling in the world. There’s an expression; ‘The second best feeling in the world is laughing and the first is making people laugh.” You gotta earn your chops doing stand-up exclusively. It’s a refined art. RVO: What does it take to be good at stand up? BD: Doing stand-up, a big part of it is getting comfortable on stage and getting centered emotionally and mentally. The hardest part is each crowd is different, you have good shows and bad shows. You can’t let the bad shows affect you emotionally. You figure out what worked, what didn’t and you don’t let it affect your confidence. Get on stage, get those 10,000
hours to be good at anything. RVO: What does it take to be good at stand up? BD: Doing stand-up, a big part of it is getting comfortable on stage and getting centered emotionally and mentally. You figure out what worked, what didn’t and you don’t let it affect your confidence. Get on stage, get those 10,000 hours to be good at anything. Another aspect is developing your material. It’s scientific whittling. Stuff that works with 80 percent of crowds, you stick with that material. If it keeps working almost all the time, there’s something there. You can hear it in the laughter. It gets that huge laugh, that pop. Keep at it. That’s how you get a successful act. It could take me two years to get one joke right. If you go: Brett Druck will be performing at the following clubs. Some of Jersey City’s most popular restaurants are participating like GP’s Restaurant in Hamilton Square, The Hamilton Inn, The Bistro at Grove Square, Rustique Pizzeria, Gypsy Grill and Tommy2Scoops. The Festival will also have Le Bouquiniste, a mobile art kiosk from Curious Matter, and a live interactive weaving skill-share by relational artist Janna Maria Vallee. The Cathedral Arts Festival is meant to bring new
people into the Grace Church community, Elise says. And with Bayla Kallstrom as chairwoman, everyone is benefiting from her wisdom of what things were like 25 years ago when she and then curator artist Charles Kessler knocked on doors inviting artists to participate. “Our theme from the very beginning was community, creativity and diversity,” Kallstrom says. “We feel artistry is a universal language. It’s very spiritual. It’s like religion, it floats above. It contains many voices, viewpoints and can pull people together in a spiritual way. A lot of people who came to Grace Church weren’t Christians but wanted to be a part of our community and every human being is better when they are part of a community; where people gather to help people become the best they can be. That’s a committed community and that’s always our goal.” If you go: Sat, Apr. 18, 7:30 pm-12 midnight The 25th Annual Cathedral Arts Festival Champagne Gala 39 Erie St. (Downtown) JC Admission: $40 in advance; $50 at the door. For Hot Sauce & Rubs, Call Uncle Bud!
By Sally Deering
A
fter telling his buddies the hot sauce on his wings wasn’t making him sweat, Tony Alexander’s friends told him if he didn’t think the sauce was hot enough, he should make his own. And that’s exactly what Alexander did. That challenge happened a few years back and now Tony Alexander goes by the nickname Uncle Bud, chief cook and bottle washer for his own brand of sauces guaranteed to bedazzle any dish, even two fried eggs. Alexander sells his sauces at the River View Association’s Farmers’ Markets on Sundays in the Heights
(May-November) and at the Grove Street Plaza for Groove on Grove on Thursdays. Currently, he’s in the process of getting his sauces into a big box store that sells whole foods. “This is my year to expand my business and take it to a new level,” Alexander says. Being an entrepreneur may not be an easy road to success, but Alexander works hard to achieve his goals. With an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts, he’s a full-time cook at Steven’s Institute in Hoboken; he caters small parties and special events; and in his spare times he makes sauces, rubs and a seasoning he calls Love Dust with his own secret ingredients. In the few years he’s been in business, Alexander has gone from making one hot sauce to 20 sauces that can be used as marinades, glazes and flavor-enhancers. Alexander says he has a basic foundation sauce in all his sauces, and they’re all vegan and gluten-free, but that’s where the similarity ends. Uncle Bud’s
Sauces include Spicy Garlic, Bubblin’ Brown BBQ, Chipotle BBQ, Sweet Potato BBQ, Teriyaki, Orange Ginger Garlic, and Garlic Parmesan. His Hot Sauces are EZ on the Cheeks (mild) and Butt Burnin’ (wing sauce). He also sells Uncle Bud’s I Got Nuttin’ but Love for You Peanut Butter Sauce and Kiss Me Garlic Sauce.
“My Garlic Sauce is a life-changing sauce,” Alexander says, taking a coffee break at Mod Cup in the Heights. “There’s nothing like it.” And right then and there, a customer walks up to Alexander to tell him she ran out of her 10 oz. bottle of Spicy Garlic Sauce and asks when and where she can purchase more. “I got the big bottle at the farmer’s market and now I’m scraping the bottom of the bottle,” Stephanie Huang of Jersey City says.
“I love it. It goes with barbecue. I put it on my homemade pizza, and fried eggs in the morning. I put it on everything.” Alexander thanked her and suggested next time to mix the sauce into Tony Alexander, the homemade pizza aka Uncle Bud BBQ, dough. Huang said she who makes 20 different would try it and placed hot sauces. an order for two more man, Alexander found his 10-ounce bottles. calling in food, he says, and “She’s a good custom- went on to earn an Associer,” Alexander ate’s Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management says. “When and Culinary Arts at the Art she stopped Institute in New York. Alexander have gone from selling their wares at the market to opening their own businesses or having their products sold in big box stores. “The farmers’ market, which begins this year on Sunday, May 3rd, is a community gathering and for entrepreneurs, a good way to connect with community, build relationships and test your product,” BrownRuggia says. “A few of the new businesses here in the Heights started at the River View Farmers’ Market, like Mod Cup and Yoga in the Heights. We like entrepreneurs like Uncle Bud.” Alexander wrote a book about his sauces which he’s wrapping up. He’s also getting his website up so he can start filling orders online. And when asked,
what makes his sauces stand out from the rest, Alexander says: “Love is the key. My motto ‘Put a little stank on it’ means put some love in it.” One of his products, a flavor-enhancer he calls Love Dust is seasoned salt that can be used on meat, poultry, fish – you name it. And how did he get the nickname Uncle Bud? “My father’s friend was named Bud, and my oldest brother started calling me Bud and it took,” Alexander say. “With six kids in the family, we gave each other crazy nicknames. I was Bud, and now Uncle Bud is who I am.” Follow Tony Alexander (Uncle Bud) on Twitter: @ UncleBud5 To place orders, visit his Facebook page: Uncle Bud Catering For more info: Unclebud5. ta@gmail.com

Harpeth Rising to Perform at Spiral Sounds Concert in Jersey City
Since their formation in 2009, Harpeth Rising has been building a reputation by breaking down musical boundaries. Their virtuosic instrumentals of banjo and violin mixed with cello and foot percussion create an exciting and unique blend of musical genres that include folk, rock, bluegrass, and roots music. Their original lyrics, conveyed through powerful three-part vocals, are both gritty and poignant. The all-female group met while studying classical music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and were united – and continue to be driven by – their eclectic musical interests. After an impressive discography of four studio albums in four years, Harpeth Rising released their first live album in November of 2014. The album consists entirely of performances at The Dreaming Tree Coffeehouse in Baptistown, NJ and includes both original songs and previously unrecorded covers the trio’s fans had been requesting. A unique feature of their live shows, Harpeth
Rising’s covers range from Led Zeppelin to Pete Seeger with unparalleled freshness and originality.
The trio’s most recent studio album, ‘Tales From Jackson Bridge,’ reached No. 6 on the Folk DJ Charts and No. 15 on the EuroAmericana Charts.
