VISIONS OF INDIA
Bayonne Artist Nupur Nishith creates Traditional Folk Paintings Exhibits at Bridge Gallery in Bayonne; Gallery 14 Maple in Morristown By Sally Deering Dark-eyed women in traditional clothing are painted against a backdrop of bands of colors filled with rows of tiny fish, elephants and other imagery of India. They are the paintings of artist Nupur Nishith, a resident of Bayonne who moved to the U.S. a little over five years ago with an MBA and several years of working for a bank. Instead of following a banking career, though, Nishith decided to follow her passion for art. Nishith has several glass pieces at the Bridge Art Gallery in Bayonne and paintings at the Morris 14 Gallery in Morristown. She works on various surfaces like paper, canvas, glass, clay, ceramic, and wood.
Creative Mithila, which is also the name of her website.
“I don’t have any art training,” Nishith says. “The art I do is a folk art from where I born. I learned it from watching my mother. From observing her, I used to do my own paintings in India, some random shows. I loved art, so when I moved here, I told myself I think I should take my art seriously.” The traditional paintings
“Dancing with Colors” by Nupul Nishith Nishith refers to are Mithila paintings, from the Mithila region where she was born. Mithila paintings, she says, were traditionally made with natural colors, and when she started doing them on canvases with acrylic colors, she evolved a style of her own calling it

“Vipasana Buddha” by Nupul Nishith “Mithila paintings are also known as Madhubani paintings, an ancient folk art from India,” Nishith says. “I took up the art form at
an early age observing my mother painting them for various occasions, rituals and festivals. Over the years I have evolved my own distinct style by fusing contemporary ideas with traditional art forms using modern tools.” Traditionally, Madhubani paintings were done on the floor and walls and then about 50 years ago, artists started painting them on paper, Nishith says. “It’s an ancient art form, and they used them to decorate their houses,” Nishith says. “For any social gathering, they used to decorate with floor paintings and wall paintings; they were such beautiful paintings. They finally decided to let the world see them and gave the artists paper.” Nishith’s paintings are Cont’d on page 3

Cont’d from page 2 images of people doing simple things: a figure dances; another meditates; one is taking a selfie. She creates her paintings on canvas with acrylic paints or on her tablet and Samsung Note phone using a stylus. “I’m a technology person, I started painting digitally,” Nishith says “I doodle little pieces on my cellphone, and my tablet. Most of my paintings are completely by hand, mostly free-hand by brush.” Nishith started exhibiting her art in 2015 and this year, she’s done five shows including COLOR at the Brooklyn Waterworks Artists Coalition, a national juried show, where she earned a Certificate of Recognition for her
“Dheeya” by Nupur Nishith painting Dheeya. “It was the first show I applied to,” Nishith says. “There were around 1800 entries and I received one of the top 13 awards. That was a huge morale booster.” With her boost in confidence as an artist, Nishith plans to create more art and do more solo shows in 2017, she says. “What I do is unique,” Nishith says. “It has a universal appeal.” One big part of the

appeal of her paintings, Nishith says, are the small details she creates in the background. Many people who buy her paintings asks her to tell them the meaning of the symbols.
“Antardwandva” by Nupur Nishith “They always want to know the story,” Nishith says “One client, when I delivered the painting, she wanted to know every detail of the painting, why I used certain elements.” And when Nishith sells her paintings, she always tacks on a “1” at the end of the price, whether its
$301or $601 for a painting. “In Hindu culture, ending a number in one is a symbol of good luck,” Nishith says. “It’s good luck for who buys it, for who sells it, its good luck.”

George Bailey comes to Hoboken in “It’s a Wonderful Life” Mile Square Theatre presents Jimmy Stewart Classic thru Dec. 18
By Sally Deering One of Hollywood’s feel-good movies of the 1940s has played on TV so many times most of us can sing “Buffalo Gals” with our eyes closed. I’m talking, of course, about the Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed classic IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE directed by Frank Capra. To celebrate the holidays – and its new space in Hoboken – Mile Square Theatre presents IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, a Live Radio Play by Joe Landry, directed by Associate Artistic Director Mark Cirnigliaro. Based on the Capra film, the play takes the audience behind the scenes of a radio station’s live performance of IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE with six actors playing a repertory of characters. The show runs through Dec. 18. “It’s a radio play, but at the same time it’s also a stage production,” Cirnigliaro says. IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE tells the story of George Bailey of Bedford Falls, a young man filled with wanderlust who reluctantly takes over the family business when his dad passes away. Every time George tries to leave for a life of adventure, something keeps him homebound. With financial ruin pounding at his door, George attempts suicide and almost succeeds,

O’Connor, Cirnigliaro and the rest of the crew at Mile Square Theatre are still planning the 2017 season, but O’Connor says there will definitely be a 14th annual 7th Inning Stretch, a one-act play about baseball performed every year at Mile Square Theatre. Cirnigliaro says he hopes ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE also becomes an annual tradition for Mile Square Theatre. “We just opened the new venue earlier this year,” Cirnigliaro says. “We didn’t have a consistent space and now we do. I think it’s amazing. Having your own space presents opportunities, possibilities and a future for where we can go as an organization, artistic company and cultural center. It’s the beginning of something amazing.”

Third & Vine-Divine By Sally Deering
T
hird & Vine off Newark Avenue in Downtown Jersey City offers some of the finest cheeses – soft & creamy, semi-firm, hard, blues and stinkers -- here in Hudson. Owners Brian Rothbart and Jamie Mayne, and Executive Chef Lynn Wheeler refer to it as a Cheese & Wine Tavern with more than 30 cheeses currently on the menu. “Jamie runs the cheese program,” Chef Wheeler says, as he preps the kitchen for the Sunday night dinner rush. “We have about 25-40 cheeses in house. For instance, we don’t have Brie cheese on the menu, but we offer cheeses that are similar.” At Third & Vine, the menu is small and very particular. Rothbart, Mayne and Wheeler took special care to get it right, Wheeler says.
For Starters, there are the Mixed Olives, Pickle Plate (house pickled seasonal vegetables), Poached Pear Salad (frisee, blue cheese, candied pepitas, balsamic vinaigrette),

Executive Chef Lynn Wheeler Beet and Arugula Salad (hazelnut butter, goat cheese bombolini), White Anchovies (minced garlic, parsley), Escabeche (cured octopus, mussels, and sardines w/ arugula, peppers and onions), and Pissaladiere (caramelized onions, roasted mushrooms, and Kalamata olives) ($4-$16). Small Plates are perfect for sharing, Chef Wheeler says, like the Deviled Egg, Butternut Squash Risotto Cake (chestnut mascarpone, frisee, reduced balsamic), Stuffed Peppers (mozzarella, speck), Beef, Pork, and Ricotta Meatballs (creamy polenta, tomato basil sauce), Mac and Cheese (5 cheeses, lardons, parmesan crunch), and Braised Pork Belly (Brian’s bourbon barbecue sauce, Third Street slaw) ($2-$12). Hot Cheese Sandwiches include American (house blend of 4 domestic

cheeses); Spicy Duck (house smoked duck breast, pickled serrano, gruyere); Jamon Bocadillo (speck, fig jam, manchego, balsamic, arugula); Croque Madame (mortadella, gruyere, bechamel, egg, truffle); and The Stinker (grayson, taleggio, sauteed onions, English mustard) ($8-$12). Third & Vine has “Off the Menu Wednesdays” where Chef Wheeler prepares specials from the kitchen like Venison Capriccio with celery and parsley, which he served recently. For entertainment, the owners keep it simple, Wheeler says. They had an acapella group, recently, and they show old black &

white movies on the TVs. And the kitchen stays open late. “We have a lot of industry people come here after their shifts end,” Wheeler says, “because they know the kitchen stays open.” The restaurant is closed Christmas and open New Year’s Eve; but closes the first week of the New Year, so the staff has the week off. Chef Wheeler, who has been in the restaurant business for more than 20 years says, “Third & Vine is a very comfortable place. We want people to feel relaxed when they hang here.”
