PRODUCER, SONGWRITER STERLING FOX TALKS JC LIVING, CREATIVITY AND WHAT’S AHEAD By Darren Paltrowitz A Jersey City resident since 2007, Sterling Fox has worked on a lot of hit songs in his Jersey City home. Initially, Fox moved to JC out of financial necessity, backing up local musicians after a stint as a pianist on a cruise ship. Less than a decade since his move to Jersey City, Fox remains a highlydemanded co-writer with songs written and/or produced for artists including Gym Class Heroes, Adam Lambert, Tiesto, Lindsey Stirling and Boyz II Men. When not occupied with making music for other artists, Fox runs Silver Scream Records, a record label and online apparel store. Fox recently released on the Silver Scream label, a single by renowned DJ Samantha Ronson, and Silver Scream will also be the home of an up-coming fulllength album by Fox. In the meantime, Fox talked with River View Observer about life behind-the-scenes in music, in addition to everyday life as a Jersey

RVO: What do you wish more people knew about Jersey City? SF: I wish they knew more about the history of the neighborhood -- which is quite interesting -- and also about some of the locations a bit more off the beaten path. Places like the Loew’s Theatre and Riverview Park are super-unique and don’t really get the amount of attention they deserve from the Downtown JC folks.

Sterling Fox City local. RVO: What made you decide to move to Jersey City? SF: At the time it was one of the cheapest places you could live in the New York City area. I originally moved here out of necessity, but soon grew to love the neighborhood and now just enjoy living here. RVO: Do you have a favorite restaurant in town? SF: Being a vegetarian, I really enjoy Subia’s Cafe on Jersey Avenue.

RVO: What keeps you living here, as opposed to Manhattan? SF: I enjoy the neighborhood, the pace, the diversity. Manhattan is, of course, amazing, but Jersey City gives me a little creative buffer/bubble in which I can develop ideas without feeling as much anxiety as I would in Manhattan. There’s a little less pressure to be part of a scene, so I feel like that aids me in viewing things objectively. It’s kind of the antithesis of hipster subculture. I like to think of Jersey City as the

norm-core capital of New York.

RVO: When you’re working, what does a typical work day in Jersey City look like for you? SF: If I’m working from home, which I do often, I will wake up around 10 am. Depending on which section of JC I’m in -- I currently have two apartments here and bounce back and forth between the two for work – I’ll grab a coffee at Banyan Cafe on Bright Street, or Smith and Chang on Pavonia Avenue. After shotgunning said coffee, I’ll hole up in front of my workstation with my microphone, etc. and start writing or recording music. Often, recording artists will come to my house, and we will write songs and record demos. I sit in front of my computer a good portion of the day making music. For lunch sometimes I’ll hit Subia’s or Sawadee. If I’m going out for drinks later at night, I’ll typically hit Lucky Seven’s, LITM, Brightside Tavern, or

Rolon’s. I usually lean toward older establishments or dive bar types. RVO: Is there a good artist community around you in Jersey City? SF: I think there is. I wouldn’t say I’m superactive in the scene here, although I would love to be. The art and music scene seems to be improving gradually. I think a proper small-to-mid-size music venue still seems to be a wish of mine. I’ve been talking with a few people about trying to put something together, so we shall see. I’ve seen a couple of great pieces of street art lately, and you get a few good bands popping up once in a while. I think the scene/city needs to continue to support the arts here and likewise artists need to continue to support each other. Jersey City has the potential to have a truly vibrant arts scene. New restaurants and developments are all well and good, but if creative minds aren’t Cont’d on page 12

So Long Dear Friend By Sally Deering Artist, arts facilitator, and a stand-up woman are just some of the ways Meredith Lippman will be remembered. A Program Development Specialist for the Division of Cultural & Heritage Affairs and Tourism, Lippman, 63, passed away Sun, Nov. 8 at her Jersey City home. On Tues, Nov. 17, friends, family, and members of Hudson’s arts community gathered to pay tribute to Lippman inside the Rotunda Gallery located just steps from Meredith’s first floor office at the Justice William J. Brennan Courthouse in Jersey City. They gathered to share SPRING 2016-Riverview.pdf 1

thoughts, feelings and memories of Lippman in a tribute to the life of this respected woman of the arts. John Jay Hebert of the West Hudson Opera Company opened the program singing Leonard Cohen’s “Alleluia”. Director of Hudson’s 11/24/15 AM Offi ce of9:25 Cultural Affairs

Bill LaRosa welcomed everyone and shared memories of Lippman. He said that throughout her time at the Cultural Affairs office, Lippmann always expressed passion for her work. She helped create and facilitate arts programs; designed workshops for artists, and helped non-

profits like Pro Arts, Guttenberg Arts, St. Joseph’s School for the Blind and the Union City Music Project, find funding. And time and again, when someone needed a helping hand, Lippman responded with an open heart. “Tonight we are gathered to celebrate the public

and private life of Meredith Lippman,” La Rosa told the assembled guests. “Meredith was a public official. A lovely person who touched many lives in the public and private life she lived. She loved the (Rotunda) Gallery and she loved working with curators and artists. She loved to come to work every day; and Meredith was an accomplished artist in her own right.” Raised in New York City, Lippman studied Con’t on page 4

Cont’d from page 3 philosophy at Adelphi University and attended SUNY Purchase where she was in the fine arts program. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Empire State SUNY; and spent a year studying Public Art in SUNY’S Graduate Program. Lippman went to work for the Cultural Affairs office where she empathized with the artists she advocated for and worked

diligently to help them connect with the Hudson community. She helped artists expand their careers through workshops, newsletters, and updates on venues where they could exhibit their work. “I congratulate the family on the choice of this venue (for Meredith’s Memorial Service),” La Rosa said. “We had many cultural events here. This is where we saw her. She

would lead little Kindergarten and Senior groups on tours.” Lippman’s husband, John Steadman commended the arts community his wife was involved in. “It’s a fabulous community,” Steadman told the crowd. “They say you get out what you put in and Meredith put in a lot. I wish she could see you all here today.” Their daughter Morgan

Steadman also said a few words about her mom. “My mom chose me,” Morgan Steadman said of her adoption when she was a baby. “She was the most amazing mom and the most amazing person. I will miss her. Her laugh brightened my day. Her voice calmed me down. I was so lucky.” Lippman’s cousin Cass went to the podium to share stories. Her mother and Lippman’s mother were close sisters. When Cass’s mother needed to be hospitalized for a couple of months, Lippman volunteered to care for her young cousin. “She was remarkable,” Cass says. “She took care of me when I was 12. I suffered a tremendous amount of loss this year; and I learned: If someone you love gives you an invite, try to accept it. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring.” Several artists stepped up to the podium to share memories of Lippman. Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise also talked about how he will miss how she helped him at public events. Right before the end of the tribute where a photo montage of Lippman with friends and family was projected on a screen, Melina Garcia, Executive Director of the Union City Music Project shared what Lippman meant to her. “I had the idea to bring

music to children in Hudson County,” Garcia says. “Someone told me to reach out to Meredith Lippman, and I did. Her door was always open. She would tell me, ‘I’m here for you’. I want to emphasize how much of a connector and supporter she was. I loved her as a dear friend. She was someone I admired.” On behalf of the River View Observer staff, we would like to say what a tremendous sadness we feel over Meredith Lippman’s passing. She was a terrific person – smart, resourceful and always trying to help artists in our community. We will miss seeing her during our visits to the Cultural Affairs office; and we send our sincerest condolences to the Lippman/ Steadman family. “Meredith Lippman was an adjudicator for the Guadadiello Scholarship Fund. Her dedication in assisting young artists reach their goals by offering insightful critique and advice was a major influence in choosing scholarship recipients.” Those wishing to make a donation in honor of Meredith Lippman may send checks payable to: Anthony S. Lincoln Center’s DADA WOOF PAPA HOT explores Gay (and Straight) Parent Issues

Hudson’s Tammy Blanchard Plays a Mom with a Secret By Sally Deering

T

he title of Peter Parnell’s new play at Lincoln Center DADA WOOF PAPA HOT sounds like the playwright went bonkers at his computer one night. It actually stands for the first words a little girl speaks to her dad – silly, yet endearing, baby talk. Baby talk runs throughout DADA WOOF PAPA HOT, Parnell’s new play at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center through Jan. 3. Directed by Scott Ellis, DADA WOOF PAPA HOT focuses on the relationships between two pairs of gay dads raising

young children; and, it features Hudson’s Tammy Blanchard in the supporting role of a mom with a secret. All the characters in Parnell’s new play are parents, both gay and straight, grappling with childrearing and its effects on marriage and adult relationships. Alan and Rob, played by John Benjamin Hickey and Patrick Breen, are gay and married with a threeyear-old daughter. During the course of one school year, Alan, Rob and their friends must deal with issues couples with children struggle with, like sharing child-rearing responsibilities and maintaining

commitment in their relationships. Funny and poignant, DADA WOOF PAPA HOT is a mid-life coming-of-age story that explores some of the challenges gay parents face and are they different than the challenges of straight parents? UNCHARTERED TERRITORY Ellis, who was nominated last year for a Tony Award for his direction of YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU on Broadway says he was drawn to the play because of the issues it brings up on the relatively new topic of gay fatherhood.

Tammy Blanchard “I love that it’s a piece talking about unfamiliar territory,” Ellis says. “There’s not a lot of stuff being said about it. Gay, straight, we may have different challenges, but it feels very universal to me.” Ellis spoke highly of

the cast and commented on Blanchard’s work in the play. Although she’s in just one scene; her performance is funny and touching; and a real accomplishment considering the audience doesn’t see her until midway through the play. “It’s one scene and she has to take the stage so that the audience says, who is that?” Ellis says. “It’s tricky and Tammy manages to get it right. I’ve seen Tammy’s work a couple of times on stage. She’s incredible to work with and great to have in the room.” DADA WOOF PAPA HOT is Blanchard’s first Broadway play; up until now her Broadway credits Cont’d on page 8

THE BOSS Returns

Jon D’Amore’s “The Boss Always Sits in the Back” re-released in paperback By River View Observer Staff One Hudson man’s story about his relationships with “the Mob” has been re-released as a memoir and in paperback. THE BOSS ALWAYS SITS IN THE BACK – a Memoir by Jon D’Amore, who was raised in Secaucus, is an account of a multi-million dollar Las Vegas casino scam in the mid-1970s that led to a change in gambling laws in America. . “I didn’t write THE BOSS to be just another mob story,” D’Amore says. “It also describes historic events that left a mark on me...while the story also tells about a young man’s experiences in mid-1970s Vegas that very few would ever get to enjoy. The book is suspenseful, exciting, humorous, entertaining and about a historic scam that changed gambling laws in America, and destroyed the crew of Hudson County guys who ran it.” Signed copies of Jon D’Amore’s memoir are now available at Little City Books in Hoboken and

MANA CONTEMPORARY, 818 Newark Ave, JC, (201) 604-2702, www.manacontemporary.com. MALI DE-KALO: RELAYING #2: TESTIMONIES ON MOTHERHOOD LOST. “A site-specific video installation from Israeli artist Mali De-Kalo focusing on the stories of women who have been rejected from their children’s lives. In 2011, Mali De-Kalo, a multidisciplinary artist based in Tel Aviv, began collecting interviews with Middle Eastern women whose children have rejected them following the dismantling of the family unit: a divorce, a fall-out, or separation. De-Kalo spent three years speaking with the women who have suffered this trauma. With the help of two writers, she condensed her findings into vivid first-person monologues, four- to five-minute testimonies that reveal intense pain and sorrow. These are being read by performers and filmed in their own homes, to fully protect the identities of the mothers. This anonymity reflects the larger societal

issues of the official and unofficial laws of motherhood and femininity. The narrators, several of whom are gender activists who espouse collaborative acts through solidarity with women, volunteered their services in support of the mothers. As friends and colleagues of the artist, they participated in the Relaying series at her invitation out of a profound sense of empathy.” (Pictured: Video still from Relaying #2: Testimonies on Motherhood Lost BY Mali De-Kalo.)

Joe Waks says of his work: “The paintings that are in the Hoboken show expound on the central tenet of playwright Martin Esslin, whose writings focused on the meaninglessness and incongruity of life. The paintings ‘re-contextualize’ the icons and emblems common amongst disparate human civilizations by utilizing paint, text, advertising imagery and events plucked straight from the newspaper. Consumption and the ubiquity of consumer culture are at the heart of these works, but there is a pervasive ambivalence that lies within.” ISSYRA GALLERY, Issyra Gallery, 300 Observer Highway, HOB. Mom’s Family Recipes with a Dash of Heart Roman Nose brings Flavors of Southern Italy to Downtown JC

By Sally Deering

B

ack in the day, Frank Fiore’s family emigrated from Southern Italy to the Bronx and after years of big family dinners made from Grandma Fiore’s recipes, Frank, his brother Raymond, his father, Ruggero and his mother Maria, extended their family table to Newark Avenue in Downtown Jersey City and opened Roman Nose--Authentic Italian Kitchen. Located next to The Word Bookstore right off Grove Street, Roman Nose landed one of the best locations in town: the Pedestrian Mall that extends west from Grove, Roman Nose offers guests a hearty taste of Southern Italy and a casual dining experience with white wainscoting on the walls and vintagestyle tin ceilings. It has two areas for seating and a small bar with a big wine and cocktails list. Intimate and friendly with black & white family photos on the walls, Roman Nose’s atmosphere is like one big family reunion with guests drinking, dining and enjoying the themselves. “I moved to Jersey City 12 years ago,” Frank Fiore says, sitting at one of his larger tables during a busy dinner service. “I felt we needed a good Italian

restaurant downtown. I spent every summer in Italy with my grandparents. For me the story wrote itself. We didn’t try to be Italian. We cook traditional Italian food as we always do and people appreciate it. We were artisanal. I grew up curing sausages in our garage,” Fiore says. “We pickle, we jar. We made our own wine.” Roman Nose – Authentic Italian Kitchen – is just that. The cooks were all

trained to cook the recipes that Fiore’s grandmothers cooked back in Italy. And the menu is an homage to Fiore’s Italian roots. Antipasti dishes feature Olive Miste, Italian olives served in house marinade of lemon, thyme, rosemary, garlic, and fennel seed; and Crostini di Casa homemade mozzarella, prosciutto, tomato, oregano melted on grilled filone bread. Bruschette: (3 for $5; 6 for $9) Pomodoro, Pesto,

Ricotta, Miele, e Noci, Pomodori Secchi e Pecorino, Crema Di Carciofi, and Tapenade di Olive. Formaggi e Salumi: ($15; choice of three) Served with Tuscan chestnut honey, roasted almonds, fresh bread; a selection of

premium Italian cheeses including Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorino Romano Pepato and Fontina. Insalate: ($8-$12) Insalata Caprese, homemade mozzarella, tomato, and Cont’d on page 22
